Thinking about my fic parhelion too. I feel a lil bit bad about how long I'm taking to write chapter 3. But I think my thoughts on bill and ford and their relationship to each other has evolved into something so different from what it was when I wrote that fic that I no longer know how to end it anymore

I took my mother's car to work today on the big scary highway and didn't die and also shaved over an hour off my commute, round trip, and got an extra half hour of sleep in time AND was actually on time to work
So I guess despite the ECONOMY I'm going to have to get a car, just to preserve my sanity and not be sad and full of ennui 24/7 bc honestly the last two days were the worst I've had in A Long Time

I was laying down to sleep when I was suddenly possessed with a powerful urge to rant about one of my favorite things about Gravity Falls that I have literally never heard anyone else talk about and I feel like I have a unique perspective on:
I love that Gravity Falls allows tweens to be as chaotic and vibrant as they actually are.
As an aspiring middle school teacher, I spend a lot of time around tweens. It’s a special age and while I can easily understand why a lot of people would rather avoid kids in those years, I absolutely adore them. Middle schoolers are very invested in the idea of “coolness” but the secret is that being “cool” really just means being loved and accepted.
Not-so-fun fact: most kids stop drawing in 4th grade because they start comparing themselves to others and worry about their art being “good enough.” That is an utter tragedy. Every kid deserves to feel accepted and loved enough to create.
To me, one of the sweetest experiences I can have is hearing kids talk about what they’re passionate about. Because they are passionate. Stan says that you don’t have to grow up even though you get older and I absolutely love that. Kids have so much excitement about life and I think that’s something adults often lose which is a real shame. There is no better way to live than passionately.
So when I see sweet Mabel being aggressively herself and Dipper being so delighted to talk to his Grunkle Ford about what’s he’s interested in, it absolutely warms my heart. Especially because you KNOW Ford grew up being told that nobody cared about what he had to say or what he was passionate about, so you KNOW he‘ll jump at the chance to let this kiddo know that somebody does care.
And Mabel specifically really gets me. It’s so sad to me that she gets as much hate as she does. She isn’t my favorite character, but she is definitely a kid I would love spending time with. I love how sweet she is whenever she interacts with Fiddleford and I love how much effort she puts into making other people feel loved.
So yeah, I like this show a lot and tweens are wonderful.

The Anti-Pines family is utterly fascinating. We have the blueprint for an entire pseudo canon AU, and remarkably I have seen little input from the fandom in regards to it. I can’t imagine why because there is SO MUCH TO WORK WITH HERE.
Anti-Waddles being as nefarious as Anti-Mabel. “The first pig to ever go to jail for armed robbery.” Like 😭😭 imagine waddles standing upright and holding a tommy gun. Imagine no one in the bank their holding up taking them seriously because they’re an adorable little girl and a chubby pig, and mabel threatening to put a bullet between someone’s eyes like “u better cough up the bacon before this bacon smokes u.” I wanna see what other heinous atrocities the cutest crime duo in the multiverse get up to.
ANTI-SOOS BEING A FORBES BILLIONAIRE HOW AND WHY DID THIS HAPPEN
You’d think if Anti-Ford represents the opposite of Ford that you’d wind up with someone who is exceptionally normal and uninteresting but NOPE. Anti-Ford is easily the weirdest here. FUCKING??? YOUTUBER??? DJ?? A sixty-something year old man with 200 subscribers who posts about his dubstep set lists daily. Utterly baffling.
Anti-Stan and Anti-Dipper are the most understandable in terms of being complete opposites of their counterparts, but all of this makes me wonder how differently their stories would play out because of this. Anti-Mabel was “chased out of her dimension” for being so evil. How does her family feel about this? Are they trying to get her back? Does this bizarre cast embark on a comical and heartfelt journey to try and bring her home? A journey that ends in an emotional reunion? Perhaps one that Mabel fights as she clings to her indifferent, cold ideology while her family begs her to come home. All of them recollecting her horrible crimes with proportionately little exasperation and an abundance of fondness. Stan recounting when she stole all the money from a fundraiser he’d held so she could instead invest the funds into remodeling their entire house to have a monochrome minimalist decor. Ford reminiscing about the time she tried to use his channel to funnel money into a crypto/nft scheme. Dipper having countless stories. like how happy she’d make him when he’d get to skip school thanks to her (because she burned down the school, multiple times). About how she’d sabotaged pretty much all of his relationships, but it was a good thing in the end because it allowed him to realize that who he always really loved was that dorky socially awkward corduroy girl he hadn’t noticed at first. All of this retrospection from her family chipping away at her hardened heart and- phew, I'm getting carried away, but the possibilities, man! These characters could be so much more than a one time joke.
Tumblr media
There is also the matter of Anti-Bill. “He is very boring.” Shut up??? Speak for urself, schmebulock, he sounds delightful. This is another character I believe you could expand in many interesting ways. I mean think about it, a being possessing the same caliber of bill’s omniscience and using it for good sounds amazing. Knowing all the beauty in all the universes and going out of his way to share it with weary minds through their dreams. Nullifying nightmares. What if he were a healing antidote to the mind, a medicine to bill’s mind unraveling madness? What if they knew each other?
Do you see my (delusional) vision here guys?

23.5 Ep 2 Stray Thoughts
Last week, we started our first big GL from GMMTV and were introduced to so many fantastic characters, including but not limited to: Disaster Lesbian Ongsa, Sunshine Girl Sun, Obsessed With Aliens Aylin, Eldest Daughter Alpha, and the Boy Who Means Well Mawin. Ongsa is so gay that she passed out in school because Sun touched her. She’s so gay that she forgot that women sometimes date men. Two teachers are trans. They’re reading Ender’s Game, a story about destroying those you believe to be your enemies and only through trying to destroy them does a boy bred and trained to kill the other does he come to love them. I’m having a great time.
Sometimes I forget that AJ/JJ are only 23. I’ve been watching these boys play high schoolers for six years now, and I’m sure I will for six more.
Mawin is Mawin. How dare you?? Euro continues to be great at comedy.
I appreciate the rainbow at the end of the intro. Make sure people know this is about gay people.
Episode 2: Universe Club
Very much enjoying Ford and Earn as the nosy friends.
Sun is so confident in her flirting in these DMs.
What’s with the trans color pattern around the floral club? I hope this is a teaser for later!
Wait! Is Mawin interested in Tinh?
Is this going to be like Geography Club (2013) where the club is secretly just for the gays?
Now why would she throw her phone away and not just close the account? That makes no damn sense.
Why are we blaming a curse when she threw her own damn phone away?
Yes, Charoen, call her ass out.
When I was a kid, I watched bird shit land on a senior who was wearing a cast at the time. She was horrified.
Accidentally ghosted Sun and now she thinks she’s cursed! Ladies, please!
I am invested in the dynamic between Teachers Bambam and Nida.
Latte is always panting. I feel so bad for this dog. They probably have the A/C off to cut down on ambient noise.
I respect Sun for not being petty and leaving Earth on read.
Ton is feeling like he might be family. I’m feeling good about this since he played Ta and Non before so we know he’s down to clown as a queer character.
I’m still with this show. I like seeing Milk play a character with a lot of energy after UMG, and I like that they’re continuing to let Love play self-assured characters. I’m also enjoying the rest of the cast in this. It’s been a fun two weeks so far.

Hi there, I might be kind of obsessed with the idea of rbr charles or rbr lestappen so I need to hear the thoughts of some people who might not be in the "lestappen gate 2023" bubble as I am :)) Do you think this can actually happen and become reality? (After all Charles is better of with rbr than ferrari, that's for sure.)
And please be honest. Thank you!
in my opinion, it's not happening babes x
redbull have never had 1-2 teammate finish before this year. ever. it doesn't make sense to fire the driver who finished 2nd in the championship which is exactly where you want him. if checo's lawyers were worth any salt im sure he had a stipulation like you can't fire me for this unless you're willing to PAY pay. checo has a contract til 2024 which redbull is willing to play out. if you've heard newey, he said next year's car is supposed to be even better 🤞 somehow
if checo completely forgets how to drive next year and the grid is super competitive, I can see him being midway switched into the season which redbull is known to do -- but they would do it with someone internally, like they did with kyvat and max, or alex and pierre. as in, they'd be looking at daniel or yuki, since liam lawson is already waiting in the wings.
now 2025 is the Great Unknown, many contracts are expiring apart from max's. here's why it doesn't make sense for charl to go to redbull in 2025: regulations change in 2026. presumably redbull is gonna be fucked by it, like they were fucked by 2013 reg change or merc was fucked by 2022. both maxywaxy and horner have raised some concerns about the reg change. they're getting Ford as their new engine partner, with no clue how that's gonna effect the car -- cause the current Honda is what they're winning the championships with. we can expect redbull domination until 2025, but after that it's anyone's game. so if charles is signing with redbull in 2025, he's coming into a very strong car and a team that's been centred around 1 driver for 9 years at that point. and that's his one chance for sure to fight for the championship. he doesn't even get 1 season's grace period of acclimatising as max's teammate because he doesn't know what 2026 regs will do to the car, if he has another shot. that's a lot of pressure, where even p2 is seen as a failure.
one of the reasons charles is so highly rated is because he puts up a fight against max, like the first half of last year when the Ferrari was faster, or this year when the redbull is slow on certain tracks. if charles moves to redbull, p2 is the MINIMUM of what he's expected. look at how fans do not rate any of max's teammates, cause unless you beaten him it doesn't count. everything chal does in redbull will be held with max's yardstick measure, a team where max has been longer, the only car max has had to drive while charles needs to adjust to it.
I don't think anyone is unbeatable, lewis wasn't, max isn't. but max is the best driver in that redbull.
redbull doesn't want or need 2 drivers fighting for the championship. they need a competent second driver. the valtteri or mark webber buffer. charles is very much the face of ferrari and regarded as the better driver, why would he go to redbull to play max's second fiddle? charles has world champion ambitions, redbull already has a world champion they're happy with -- why invest in another very expensive driver? when they can get a more willing team player, or even look for a younger talent they can move to the seat for 2028? redbulls favouritism predicates on performance, so if charles outperforms max you can expect redbull to be in "let them race" mode, like they did when rookie max outperformed daniel. but that means charles only has 2025, his very first year in redbull, to not only adjust as max's teammate but also beat him.
finally, we don't know if charles wants to move to redbull. we know he loves ferrari, for better or for worse. before max's extension to 2028, charles got the longest ever f1 contract extension with ferrari -- and that's before charles had anything to his name beyond being called predestined.
you've seen how the mclaren went from p19 p20 earlier this season to genuine podium contenders. this is the kind of magic turnaround every team is hoping for. if mclaren are championship contenders next year, every team will know you can change shit up in only 1 year. that's sunk cost fallacy if charles makes a high risk little reward move to redbull and suddenly the ferrari is a championship contender.
the tifosi love him, he wants to win a championship with ferrari, he already got a taste of what it feels like by winning Monza and the first half of 2022 season. I truly think as long as ferrari will have him, and as long as charles can endure, they're in this marriage of misplaced devotion. because the love and childhood dream is so strong for him. seb didn't leave the team until they fired him, you think he wouldn't waste another decade in the ferrari if they'd have him? and that was a 4x wdc.
If you enjoy lestappengate, if you want to speculate on it -- go forth and find your peace and joy. that's none of my business. it doesn't make sense to me, but that doesn't mean it can't make sense to you.

MY WRESTLEMANIA 40 PREDICTIONS
Tumblr media
Wrestlemania 40 starts tonight. Wish I was in the States right now 😭 I had to put in my 2 cents on how the show is going to go down.
This is my opinion and nothing more.
-----------
NIGHT ONE
Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch for the Women's World Title - I think someone else is dethroning Rhea. She’s way too popular right now too.
Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental Title - same as above. Someone more formidable is dethroning Gunther.
The Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest) (c) vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. The Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth) vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. A-Town Down Under (Austin Theory and Grayson Waller) vs. New Catch Republic (Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate) in a Six-Pack Ladder match for the Undisputed WWE tag Team Titles - apparently the titles are getting split, so there’s that.
Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso - Jimmy has essentially been booked as a joke. He needs this win more than Jey does. Jey will be fine, but for some melodramatic reason I see Jey sacrificing himself for his big brother’s sake.
Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill and Naomi vs. Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai, Asuka, and Kairi Sane) - no brainer. WWE are not letting Jade lose her very first match.
Latino World Order (Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee) vs. Santos Escobar and Dominik Mysterio - Dragon Lee has been replaced by Andrade. The result won’t change because Carlito will turn on Rey for looking him over again.
Roman Reigns and The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth "Freakin'" Rollins - Why have another standard main event match when Bloodline Rules stipulation has been thrown out there? Also, Rock pins Cody. The storyline has focused much more on them and this heaps more adversity on Cody to win.
NIGHT TWO
Seth Rollins (c) vs. Drew McIntyre for the World Heavyweight Title - Seth’s done all he can do with his reign. Drew has earned a title win in front of fans. The Bloodline may cost Seth. No comment on that guest hypocrite commentator.
Iyo Sky (c) vs. Bayley for the WWE Women's Title - No brainer. Bayley gets her redemption story. Iyo has been good but her title reign has run its course.
Logan Paul (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens for the WWE United States Title - I honestly couldn’t choose, so I picked KO because I like him the best. The match will be fire though.
LA Knight vs. AJ Styles - I’m not very invested in this match. May the better white man win.
Bobby Lashley, Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins vs. The Final Testament (Karrion Kross, Akam, and Rezar) in a Philadelphia Street Fight - I’m DEFINITELY not invested in this match. Get Bobby, Montez and Angelo out of this garbage feud, pronto!
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title - My Tribal Chief has had one of the greatest title reigns and orchestrated one of the most compelling storylines in pro wrestling history. He’s beaten the entire roster. It’s time to move the responsibility of ‘Face of the WWE’ to someone else. I like Cody. Wrestling with a torn pec for 30 mins earned my respect. I think he will do a great job of carrying the company and the matchups will be fresh. It will be Bloodline Rules to make way for all the overbooking that’s going to take place in this match. The Rock will turn on Roman to cost him the title and kick-start their feud for WM41.
-----------
Thoughts? Am I thinking too much into all of this, lol. Mania is going to be awesome!

I've inferred you like billford and i was wondering if you like any other GF ships?
if they'd been 5-10 years older and if Gideon had already gone through his humbling and heel-face turn before they met, I actually think Mabel & Gideon would've worked out pretty well; but Gideon spoiled any odds of that. In an AU it could work out. Anyway one-sided Gideon/Mabel is still fun to me because permanently unrequited love is one of my fav tropes, so Gideon can just suffer and I'll have a great time, sorry Gideon
I don't think they should ultimately stay together but I think exploring the toxic fucked-up-ness of unnatural magically-enforced attraction between Robbie and Tambry would make for a fascinating psychological fic
I yearn to know more about the siren Ford once dated. I'm personally going not by the "sirens sing a sexy seductive song" interpretation because that's boring and in my heart of hearts I believe that Ford is immune to conventional physical sexiness. Rather I'm going with the the Odyssean "sirens promise you irresistible knowledge" interpretation. What was that relationship like, what did she promise Ford, it's very canon that the promise of greater knowledge is metaphorically his siren song, the thought that at one point it was also LITERALLY his siren song is so juicy
I think there should be a love triangle between Manly Dan, Tyler Cutebiker, and Ghost-Eyes; Dan wins out though, Ghost-Eyes has that bad boy appeal but Tyler's got history with Dan, I think they've been silently making eyes at each other for years without making a move
the Hide-Behind is secretly in love with the Summerween Trickster
I believe with all my heart that Bill has the biggest stupidest crush on Quentin Trembley
we all know it's basically canon Bill has a thing for Wendy's mom, right
and furthermore if Bill ever met Mr. What's-His-Face I believe they would hit it off to an insane degree
I accidentally talked myself into realizing that Stan and Bud work REALLY WELL together
and of the other, like, normal popular ships that anyone else in this fandom actually cares about, I think Soos & Melody are the only one I'm emotionally invested in. I like them, I wanna see them happy.
Most of these I don't actively pursue fanworks for. ... Most of them don't have fanworks TO pursue.

I'm going to a writer's conference later this week and will be meeting with an editor at Angry Robot. Checking out their website, I saw you'd published An Accident of Stars through them, but I know your more recent books have come through Tor. I was wondering what your experiences were like with an independent publisher, and if publishing that way is something you'd recommend to currently unpublished writers or not (feel free to disregard this ask if that's something you'd rather not get into, of course. I was just hoping to hear a little more from someone more knowledgeable than me about these things).
Thanks for asking! While not wanting to speak for anyone other than myself, my experience with Angry Robot has been positive. I did have some trouble with an outside editor while publishing with AR, but that wasn't on them, and when they were made aware of the issue, they responded very professionally. Though AR is now largely under new management - meaning, the people I worked with directly for the Manifold Worlds series have since moved on - I'm in occasional contact with some of their current employees (for promotional and new cover purposes) and have no complaints to levy.
There's no one definitive experience of indie publishing; like most things, it can vary wildly depending on who you're dealing with. While indie publishers generally have less money to work with than the big houses - meaning, smaller advances and less paid publicity - they can make up for this in other ways. My very first publisher was Ford Street, a small kids' and YA indie based in Melbourne, and the owner was - and is - extremely adept at booking his authors for in-person events like school visits and bookshop signings. Precisely because they're competing against trad houses, successful indies tend to be very invested in helping their authors earn out, as they often don't have - or don't yet have - the type of high-earning back catalogues and/or big name authors that the big houses can rely on for a base level of income. They might not be able to pay as much up front, but a good indie publisher will help a new author establish themselves through things like signings, in-person and online events, and convention appearances, which benefits you both.
That being said, aside from checking whether a given publisher is good at supporting/endorsing its authors, the two main things you want to know with indies are their distribution and financial track record. In the former case, and especially if you're looking at a hybrid publisher or aren't sure of the difference between an indie, a hybrid and a vanity press, you need to have an idea of how your work will be distributed: if the publisher can get you into bookshops, if there's any international distribution, and whether, if the publisher asks for ebook, graphic novel and/or audiobook rights, they actually have the ability to produce your work in those formats. In the latter case, there's been several instances of ambitious indies collapsing and leaving authors in a limbo re: both money and rights, as happened with Night Shade Books before they were finally taken over by Skyhorse - but if you've done your due diligence and everything looks fine, then go ahead!

🔥 - i'd like to order an unpopular opinion on leverage, please!
Sorry for the very, very late answer, but to make up for it, have two unpopular opinions:
The first one's a bit of a cop-out. I think it's the less popular opinion, but probably because most don't care that much either way:
I head-canon that Damien Moreau is actually a banker/financier, ie, his primary source of income is actually derivatives investments and market prediction, and all the buying countries, arms deals and other such clandestine activities is just to give markets slight pushes in the direction he wants. (I've previous talked about this here (my last reblog addition))
This opinion seems "unpopular" in that the more common reading is that he's a mob boss who just calls himself a 'banker' to make himself sound cooler than he actually is. Which I think is a totally valid reading, consistent with what we are shown in canon! Like, he's all about image, and it's totally believable that the entire financier/banker persona is just that.
One reason I prefer the actually-a-banker reading is, as I described in the other post, because I like the parallel with team leverage and their "alternative revenue stream". This is also why I like to head-canon that when Eliot and Moreau were starting out (after Eliot met Toby and left the PMCs with his newfound conscience), before things got bad, they actually did good--only destabilizing horrible, abusive dictatorships, using their alternative revenue stream to help people. The parallels are just so compelling to me this way.
Another reason I prefer the actually-a-banker reading is that it's more relatable to me. I know people who work as financiers (hedge fund/high frequency trading/crypto firm founders or high-level quants etc).
None of them (that I know of) would actually do illegal things to manipulate prices, but it sometimes seems like if they were a little less risk-averse, a little less ethical, who knows? And when they tell me about the people they know, people they describe as "if you took a person's stats and dialled 'ethics' all the way down to zero"... These friends think anyone too stupid to see through a cryptocurrency white paper deserves to lose their life's savings. So when they say someone has ethics dialled to zero, well. You don't wanna know.
On the other hand, I don't know anyone who's anywhere close to being a mob boss.
-
Here's a more genuinely unpopular opinion, in that I think most people believe the opposite, and actually do care:
Tumblr media
I really like Jimmy Ford. I find the character very relatable and very compelling. I feel like a lot of people in the fandom just write him off as a bad father, but I don't think that's fair.
I talked a lot about this here (skip past the "..." paragraph; above that were my old early thoughts about Moreau, before I reformulated them to be my current thoughts)
As I mentioned there, I see in Jimmy Ford every parent who didn't understand their kid, but loved them, and as Jimmy said to Nate, that's more important.
Every parent who grew up at a different time, in another country, in a harder, less forgiving world, who wants to ensure their kid can survive that old environment, without realizing that that isn't the kid's world anymore, that their kid is actually thriving in this new world, the one their parents sacrificed to raise them in
Every parent who flipped out when their son decided to major in sociology instead of computer engineering, because they could never have made a living with a degree like that
(but he's going to do more than make a living with that degree; he's going to make a difference)
Every parent who constantly monitors their daughter to ensure she waits for marriage, because in the old country she would have been shunned or worse if she didn't
(but she's not there right? her parents worked and sacrificed and bled to bring her up in this more forgiving world)
Every parent who sits next to their kid for hours a day until they get their daily hour of piano practice done (and yells at them until they do every day, disturbing their neighbour, who's just trying to focus on doing her research and grading her students' papers, not that this is personal or anything), because the parent managed to survive and to move to this country by working relentlessly at everything they did and can't imagine a world where a 7-year-old is allowed to play and to find their own interests
(but they will, maybe not then, but one day, years down the line, they may even end up liking music)
Maybe it's that I'm a kid of immigrants who knows a lot of kids of immigrants, but I think I'm more forgiving of people who raised their children in a culture different from their own and struggled to adjust to that.

i adore the idea of washington acting aloof 24/7 but being a quietly fervent gossiper - it's kind of proven, since he did have a spy ring and shit. man needed his tea.
i need myself or preferably a much more talented author to write a story about washington getting unnecessarily invested in his aides' relationships. my friend gave me the crack idea of washington sending hamilton to do work outside just so he can go snooping on his half-written love letters to betsey, like a parent reading their kid's diary.
maybe washington's the reason why meade stuck his head up the fireplace to read hamilton's letters. i can't prove this but you can't prove it wrong either!
also i choose to believe that washington very quietly and subtly gave hamilton shit for the password incident:
for those who don't know, the password incident happened because alexander met betsey at morristown and basically fell head over heels and spent "almost every evening with her". coincidentally, he had been fond of gabriel ford (the son of judge ford) and with washington's permission, gave the boy the camp password so he could play in the village late when the sentinels that guarded the camp were active.
apparently he was so enamored and starry-eyed after a visit that he forgot the password. here's what ford said:
Tumblr media
anyways, even this random 1900 historian seemed to think the washingtons were invested in hamilton's relationship. here's two incredibly indulgent sections from Dames and Daughters of Colonial Days:
Mrs. Washington, like her husband, was very fond of young people...She took a motherly interest in Colonel Hamilton and his love affair, and Hamilton's sweetheart, Miss Betsey Schuyler, was a frequent visitor of Mrs. Washington's.
His devotion to Betsey was soon remarked in camp, and the gossips of the day exchanged the significant nod and smile when he and Betsey were seen dancing or walking or driving together. Every one was interested in this "affair", from the commander-in-chief to Tench Tilghman and Kitty Livingston.

On a lighter note, I’m curious why you think Dipper is similar to Stan and Mabel is similar to Ford
LONG POST INCOMING
Man, great question, but this is a difficult one to articulate in words, without using way too many. So here you go.
I wouldn't say they're more or less similair, I'd rather say: There are similarities between them that run a little deeper than "nerds" and "their less nerdy siblings" and I feel they're under-acknowledged.
Also I do like Stan and Mabel and Ford and Dipper moments, they're usually very cute. ^^
Keep in mind I'm probably gonna get things wrong and I don't consider myself particularly savy with characterisation and identifying it's nuances.
[Dipper and Stan]
Dipper and Stan are both presented as the "straight men" to their "eccentric siblings".
They have their own quirks and general odness but they're both more "socially aware" than their siblings. That doesn't mean socially capable or good with people. But they seem to have an easier time using sarcasm or "getting the joke" especially when they disagree with it.
Tumblr media
They both have a somewhat prickly demeanor when they interact with someone they don't like, they make it more than obvious.
Dipper jabbing Pacifica springs to mind, far more sarcastic and quick witted than dip tends to be characterised.
And Stan is just that way with most people he isn't trying to haggle.
They're both quick to reassure their siblings, and help them "get out of their heads" about something that's bugging them, by offering advice or a potential fix. (Stan more when he and ford where little) Hence why they're considered so "selfless" by the fandom. And their sibs are considered.... not that.... for failing to meet certain social expectations while under intense narrative pressure-*cough*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Ford and Mabel]
Ford and Mabel both are more bright and polite than their siblings, at first glance. They seem more eager to please during first impressions, wich also leads to both or them having trouble saying when something is bugging them. They seem to fear rejection just a smidge more. They're aware people think they're wierd and may subconsciously struggle with it.
(Ford obviously outgrew this, but, he barely talked when he was a teenager especially. I know that's probably because they didn't have a seperate voice actor for teen Ford so they tried to limit his dialogue. But still.)
Tumblr media
First things Mabel does is acknowledge his difference and complements him on it, and he complements her back. Very good first impressions.
It makes me so confused when people portray Ford as dismissive of her overall, instead of within the specific context of "understanding being different or invested in paranormal discovery".
They're both still very outgoing on the surface compared to their siblings who come across as a bit more grumbly at times.
They both aren't as overall cynical as Dipper or Stan, but when they are upset it's usually quite significant. It's usually about something more significant than a passive jab or remark, often it's something more serious that they struggle to communicate and have very emotional outbursts.
[Overall]
All of the Pines communicate poorly for the sake of the narrative but I feel the specific way both Ford and Mabel handle those situations to be similair.
Backed up by people's ableist reactions to them when comparing them to their brothers- *cough*

While functionally Dipper and Ford are in a similar boat [missing a great opportunity] and Stan and Mabel are both upset for similair reasons [being left behind by their siblings] the way these scenes play out reverses things somewhat. It shows two versions of the same problem, it demonstrates two versions of a similar falling out.
No one in these arguments is technically wrong [except Stanley if you wanna nitpick] aka:
ITS NO ONE'S FAULT.
It's also all of their faults.
It's complicated.
But the fandom-wide "blame game" is juvenile.
I think people don't acknowledge this, instead focusing on poor stanny and his falling out with his brother and sweep ford and mabel under the "selfish" rug for convenience. Even though Mabel was in Stan's position technically [without the guilt of actually ruining anything].
But I guess Mabel doesn't have "failman" charm so she's selfish and dipper's the hero because he has "failboy" charm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But god forbid Mabel and Ford feel good about themselves, that's so self centered and arrogant!
Just look at these selfish monsters!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the case of Dipper and Stan:
INSECURITY IS NOT HUMBLE.
In the case of Ford and Mabel:
Self confidence is not arrogance.
This could just be me being neurodivergent but I didn't get the impression Ford thought he and Dipper where "better" only that they where "different".
I was always annoyed by their portion of "Dipper and Mabel VS the future" and I think it's because it rushes a connection that isn't earned.
Tumblr media
Plus framing Ford as an almost sinister presence through the lighting and dialogue, as if he's leading Dipper astray. But in the next scene Dipper is declaring his loyalty in a life or death situation.
Tumblr media
Like- Dipper, honey, you've known him for a week at most- and you've spent most of that time preventing the apocalyps or worried he's possesed-
Of course Dipper doesn't want Ford to get hurt or die but this moment feels like it's compensating rather than culminating.
It feels rushed and somewhat confusing. Are we supposed to be on board with their connection or not? Is Ford being supportive or misguided?
Is the narrative agreeing that some form of "the suspension bridge effect" is happening and the characters are rushing a connection that may need some second thought?
Tangent aside, the similarities between Dipper and Ford always seemed... a little surface level? More a means to a somewhat rushed end rather than a natural progression. Unsurprising considering they had three episodes to set it up.
However Mabel and Stan at least had a whole show at that point to back it up and make it feel more natural. So I don't really have any tangents to write about it. It's good. :)
OK I think that's all I got. Hope this is half-way coherent, hope I didn't just embarrass myself by stating the obvious.

I am a bit shy to post this poll, but also, very curious about your opinion, so here we go.
After reading the Finnish sequel to Emily of New Moon series, and comparing it to the later Anne books, another question came to my mind:
(the "Emilia Kent - Runotytön tarina jatkuu" by Satu Koskimies and Vilja-Tuulia Huotarinen spoilers under the cut - as well as the origins of this question and my own opinion):
Thank you all for voting!!! I really appreciate each one of your answers ❤.
The origins of the question (and spoilers of a Finnish sequel!) under the cut:
SPOILERS for Emily's sequel (my opinion is beneath the summary):
It was a quite important issue in the Finnish sequel. Emily was very apprehensive when it came to an eventual motherhood. It was stated multiple times that she had no maternal instinct whatsover (very Rilla-like). She didn't want to sacrifice her writing - and she felt that she would have to, if she had children. One of the things she was dealing with in this sequel was writer's block - she found it very difficult to write. Thankfully, she overcame the issue and wrote another novel, at the end of the story. Emily was not exactly against having children (more like, resigned "If they come, there is nothing to be done"), but she certainly was not excited about the idea, unlike Anne.
Emily went as far as telling an annoying reporter that she and her husband were NOT going to have any children. Teddy, on the other hand, was described as wanting a family (which, for a short time, was a bit of a sore issue between them).
Emilia Kent - Runotytön tarina jatkuu takes place during the first two (?) years of Emily and Teddy's marriage. They don't have any children during this time - yet the narrative suggests that Emily is pregnant during the last two chapters (nothing is said straight-forwardly, though).
END OF THE SPOILERS for Emily's sequel.
My opinion:
I personaly have trouble picturing these two as parents. They seem far too invested into their work to find time for their eventual children.
On the other hand, LMM herself wanted children - and it was quite difficult to prevent pregnancy at these times (not impossible, of course, but difficult). Usually, marriage meant having children.
Also... Rilla, who did not like babies, couldn't help loving little Jims. We learn from "The Blythes Are Quoted" that she and Ken had, indeed, become parents to young Gilbert Ford.
Rilla's maturation is partly described via taking care of her war baby - as if to say that even people who seemingly had no parental instinct, could grow to love a child (it is not exactly true in a real world, but LMM seems to use this trope rather often; Aunt Elizabeth with Juliet and Emily, Marilla with Anne and the twins, Andrew Stuart with Jane, etc).
Also, this paragraph from Emily's Quest suggests that Emily might have wanted children at the end of the story:
"Daff," she said, "there is an old fireplace in that house—with the ashes of a dead fire in it—a fireplace where pussies should bask and children dream. And that will never happen now, Daff, for Mabel Geordie doesn't like open fireplaces—dirty, dusty things—a Quebec heater is so much warmer and more economical."
Emily's dreams are connected to the Disappointed House - I always felt that she talked about her feelings there - but that is very far-stretched and the only thing that might suggest something.
So, if I were to answer my own question: I would probably say: either none, either 1 or 2. I definitely don't see her as having a big family.
I am very curious about your thoughts!!!! Sorry for the long post.

watching Leverage episode 1
if you saw a previous post of mine that started like this....no you didn't i meant to click edit not post y'all ( @0hheytherebigbadwolf & @shana-rosee ) have enticed me and i am very curious about this show. i thought i might as well live-blog my thoughts as i watch the show. today will be s1 ep1. general thoughts will be under the initial reactions spoilers, obviously
almost accidentally watched a different Leverage
i believe it was a reboot or an adaptation of this show?
anyway
not even 5 minutes in and it's not pulling any punches
oh my god that is tristan
WE ARE 3 MINUTES IN AND THE PLOT IS SPICY
"mr. ford, don't you want to screw over the insurance company that let your son die?" OH??? DO TELL
gotta say i love the editing so far of this show. going from the meeting between this ford dude and the guy who got his blueprints stolen to the Heist™️ just....*chef's kiss*
HE DID THAT FOR A BASEBALL CARD??? WHO IS ELLIOT
parker's dad said "be a better thief" and she went "aight bet" only respect for MY queen
"parker's insane," ford said. oh she can't be that bad-- *shows flashback of her childhood home exploding* ....ok i see his point, but like, her dad was a dick
you're telling me, that they accounted for everything and all was going well, but got caught because of the nba playoffs???
listen, i am already looking at this show with the ot3, so when elliot said "it's what i do" after saving alec from security detail, how can i not see alec's reaction as something other than "ok, so i might have a thing for him"
yes, yes the easier answer is alec is impressed by elliot's skills and is also impressed that elliot didn't just leave him to get caught, but i am a lady who likes to wear her rose-tinted glasses
"so this is plan b?" "technically this is plan g" sir...when did you switch to plan b???? was it when parker jumped off early??
omg the act the trio played as the left the building? oscar worthy, i would've been fooled
"did you have fun playing the black king instead of the white knight?" which one of those writers felt like a fucking king after writing that. i know someone chuckled in their little seat like 'now that's a banger line!'
we're only 15 minutes in and there's still more???
oh? the plot thickens!
ah, we're going with the explosion death fake-out i see
"he used my son" oh ho HO someone's going to die i see
oh...my god???? how he looks at sophie??? how she looks at him???? how they speak to each other???? it is only episode one wtf
i am in love with sophie. call me nathan because she's got me wrapped around her finger
elliot being the observant one to nathan's motivations??? yes
alec is me, that's it (not really but yes)
how??? were they able to do that meeting??? did they get actors to help with the con???
THE PLOT THICKENS MORE I SEE
YO?????? I AM BAMBOOZLED THEY WEREN'T ACTORS????
I LOVE AGENT HIGGINS! IS THERE MORE OF HIM PLEASE
their like little ducklings for nathan it's so sweet
"see you!"........."we actually missed working with you, we make a great team"
they used the black king white knight line again as a call back oh that writer felt so proud of it didn't they. "yeah, that line fucks. let's do it again" <- that's them
"we offer....leverage" roll fucking credits
General Thoughts:
WOW ok it is only one episode and i am invested. they give us great character dynamics, hints of backstory, hints of character dynamic backstory, hints of future plot points -> my cream and butter, my creme de la creme
this show hits all of my weak points. yeah, i can tell this was made early 2000s but that does nothing to hinder it. i am giggling, gasping, and sitting on the edge of my seat.
when mr. uppity shareholder man found out about his room being bugged, i was so worried because the plan was going so well and i really wanted to see this guy fall. AND THEN WHEN THE FBI CAME TO ARREST HIM??? HELLO????
but yes, very great pilot, i will watch episode 2

Could I request ❛ you won’t survive long out there. i can protect you. ❜? I feel like there's some potential terry silver manipulation sprinkled within those words. 🫣

---
Collecting people.
It was a hobby, in a sense.
More than that, actually; it was like being an Architect.
Taking a rough slab of marble and chiseling it into something greater than itself.
Having the ultimate authority and say in what it will and can become.
Margaret Spencer he found working at a firm in London as a secretary for what was his overseas business partner at the time, toiling with idiotic, menial tasks far beneath someone her class, capabilities and particular education level, coaxing, or rather pilching her from underneath her boss' nose by making her an infinitely better and more advantageous offer at employment back in Los Angeles, the same way he discovered Milos Dadok in Prague as a hotel concierge, working for cheap change east of the Iron Curtain, with barely any visitors to serve in an old, Bohemian golden lobby of a run down, neglected establishment that mostly stood empty, having seen better times. Snake and Dennis he picked off of the streets after they've brazenly tried to mug him of all people, failing comically, much to his infinite amusement, deciding to keep them around purely on the off chance their antics made him laugh --- and that they did, frequently and several times a day. John himself. That was a friendship he wanted ever since the first time he saw him at basic training and then later, during orientation, on ground, in Vietnam, and the best of friends was precisely what they remained because it was something Terry cultivated, invested into with the greatest of devotions. Even Ponytail, he carried around with him, on his head, fastened to his scalp with an unassuming black hair tie, nobody realizing he was ever there. Nobody but him and John, at this point. Where others saw nothing, he tended to see opportunity. And opportunities? Opportunities were things he never had the habit of passing up on, wanting to be in control of what becomes of the rough, ragged slab of marble under his fingers as he presses down on its hardened, sleek surfaces, leaving behind ever so many dents, fingertips and markings, deciding what shape it'll ultimately take once he's done with it. Deciding if he'll make it or break it. Create a beautiful statue or ram his fist into it, shattering the project into pieces.
Then, there was you.
Homeless.
A typical sight outside of Beverly Hills.
Aimlessly mingling around what was John's dojo for months now, buzzing around the alleyways like a little fly at the mouth of the serpent's nest, often in his sight and crosshairs through the lowered shutters of the interiors of the studio space where he could spy on you accordingly; it was Terry's business. He made it his business. Everything that happened in and around this dojo, in its adjoined streets, neighborhoods, blocks, in the heart of this very city, country, the West coast itself, concerned Terry exclusively, the way the markings lining the palms of his hands concerned him, more so when he occasionally found you casting uncertain, tentative glances at nearby garbage cans dotting the sidewalks akin to so many eyesores, like you were ashamed of yourself, like you were unaccustomed and new to this, carrying collected cardboard, for what he only assumed was for the purpose of rough sleeping down on the concrete; on one occasion, it went as far as him catching you slumming it out by leaning against the inner walls of the Cobra Kai dojo itself after working hours, obscured from view at dawn, knees pushed up against your chest, startled and taking to running the minute you spotted him pulling into the parking lot, his blue Ford intended to give off the airs of working class relatability still enough to startle you into a frightened state of movement, a tinge of satisfaction running through like a current trying to imagine what your reaction would be if you ever ran into him at another part of town, Rolls Royce, Tuxedo, private chauffeur and all. But, this crap you were doing right now wouldn't cut it. You didn't get to utilize his territory like this, it wasn't for free, not without being confronted about it one way or another. So, he ambushes you one morning, coming in even earlier than he had the habit of doing so, two hours before the Larusso twerp had the tendency to show up for his classes in pain, tactically cutting off your usual escape trail tightly and very neatly pushed in between two buildings. You shriek at the sight of him.
He relished the sound.
You wouldn't mind hearing more of it.
-"You won't survive long out there."-
Terry states bluntly, but not unkindly; last thing he wanted now was for you to get a tremendously bad first impression of him, even though you by default pushed his hand by making him come head to head with you the way he did through your incessant running. Luckily for you, he liked to chase. You give him a look, like you knew. Like you knew survival wouldn't be easy out here, but you didn't feel like necessarily vocally agreeing with him. Was it pride? It was pride, wasn't it? It's only once he hands you the lunch he's been hiding behind his back that your eyes widen and you become responsive, eyes shimmering, albeit still overshadowed with carefulness. Not that he couldn't appreciate your raw survival instincts being on display. -"I can protect you."- He offers, once you fidget, stepping forward and reaching for the food being given freely, practically ripping it out of his hand to shove it into your mouth in greedy gulps, undoubtedly, fearing he'd change his mind or that this was some kind of trap, keeping your focused gaze still on him. Once you swallow, you immediately take the first given opportunity to snipe at him, appearing defensive. He chuckles. -"What's it to you, though!? Who are you? Why'd you startle me like that!?"- You demand and he bows his head, ever so slightly, sprinkling in a deliberate aura of something apologetic and respectful for you to spot, making introductions. Weird place to be formal, he understood that much, but it was shocking how far some propriety could go applied at exactly the right time and under the right circumstances. But then again, the back wall of the Cobra Kai dojo, when he really thought about it, was as good of a place as a sparring mat to pay homage. -"I'm Terry Silver. The co-owner of the establishment you're roughing it out around. I own the whole lot."- He explains, softly, watching your demeanor change. Like a slab of marble, you start to take shape, even now. He extends his hand and you never even realize you've already been collected by him as you hesitate to take it.
-"And I can be your good friend."-
Terry promises, meaning every word of it.
