I hand-knit the folklore cardigan so [with my v important pointers] you totally can, too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pattern
Taylor Swift's folklore the "Cardigan" by Lion Brand (free)
I have several qualms about this pattern, and though it’s easy to comprehend for the most part, I kind of hate it. But! I have tips below so that you can use this free pattern and OG cardigan reference pictures to make the perfect finished project. It’s also super easy actually even if you’ve never done cables or a large project before.
Materials (used as recommended by the pattern)
Needles: Takumi Clover US 9 (5.5 mm), 29" circular needles—My first time trying bamboo needles and this brand, I LOVED it. It made continental knitting so easy and fluid. I would recommend longer cables to make the button band part less stressful, and perhaps smaller diameter needles to make the ribbing prettier
Lion Brand Wool Ease: see rant below
Buttons: 3 1.25"-diameter La Mode buttons (there are prettier ones out there though they can get frighteningly expensive, pick what you like)
A summary of issues
the sizing runs very large
the button band (and, by extension, side panels) is all wrong for sizes other than S/M (the whole pattern is based aound S/M with suggested alterations for other sizes)
the arms turn out way too long for any size if you follow the instructions
the back cables (and possibly some others) are spaced distinctly differently from the OG folklore cardigan from Taylor’s site
the suggested yarn (Lion Brand Wool Ease) is scratchy on sensitive skin, stiff, thicker, more fuzzy than the folklore cardigan (and sheds a lot!), and stretches a lot which makes the cardigan larger than expected
Biggest tips (if you want to knit a cardigan similar to the OG)
CHECK YOUR GAUGE
measure yourself to pick size, and size down
find a bunch of pictures of the OG cardigan in the size that you want & count the stitches from the photos + graph the Lion Brand pattern, and compare before you begin
make alterations as needed
DO NOT BLIND BUY LION BRAND WOOL EASE
My best advice would be to just do a big guage swatch (as recommended on the pattern), run it through the wash, block it, measure it, plus assume that the cardigan will additionally stretch out on your body whenever worn. (Also if you’ve never knitted a garment before, the individual pieces absolutely look bigger once assembled and seamed than when they do on the needles while being knit.) The button band will add some width as well.
The button band is the current object of my misery. The cardigan fits like a cute tent, but the buttons beginning near my stomach is a no-go. I would definitely recommend double checking the spacing of the buttonholes on the button band because I kind of wish I’d altered them a little bit according to how I want the front to look. But then, the side panels would have to start slanting higher up towards the neck, so the whole neck should have been a smaller V. And I don’t have the heart to frog all the way back to to that. Still wondering if I should just shift the buttons higher and redo the button band, but I might just leave it as is and call it a day.
The recommended yarn is Lion Brand Wool-Ease, but actually I regret using it because it’s so stretchy and bulky, so the cardigan turned out a lot more chunky (and a lot more stretchy too I’m guessing) than the OG. I even found the finished measurements on the pattern misleading due to the cardigan stretching due to its own weight.
The pattern also calls for very long arms so I would advise just doing 4.5 diamonds for the back and then 4 diamonds for the arms, just like the OG! I thought 4 diamonds would be too short but the off-shoulder fit makes 5 diamonds incredibly long for me, and 4 would have been perfect!
I’m not sure why the instructions were that misleading with the sizing—Partly it’s me messing up with my guage, but I’m thinking it might also be because Lion Brand was basing it off the OG folklore cardigans from Taylor’s website, which I’ve heard run immensely large in a similar fashion. Still, I’m not sure exactly how the sizing compares to that of the XS/S and M/L OG cardigans
I usually am an S for perfectly fitted T shirts, and I get M sized crewnecks/hoodies for a perfect, comfy, borderline oversized fit that isn’t snug over layers. I was confused between knitting the S/M and L/XL because I wanted an oversized fit. I worried the S/M might be too snug and figured it was better to err on the side of it being a bit larger than expected because it’s still possible to style that, while a too-small cardigan would just be unwearable. But I think sizing down is the best way to go for that pattern and yarn if you’re picking between two sizes. The S/M pattern would probably produced something that fits more like a regular L/XL you would expect to see in a store.
Also, the yarn is fuzzy and pills a lot! It’s also slightly scratchy even after conditioning. So I would say just pick a durable yarn that creates a fabric that you love first before you start the project!
The Lion Brand pattern’s back cables are spaced slightly differently from the OG cardigans. (The OG had some moss stitched space between the two left cables on either end and the group of other cables in the center.) There might be other differences too. I know there are some other patterns out there you can pay for and they might be more accurate to the OG, but I would recommend simply looking up pictures of the OG cardigan in the size that you’re aiming for, and then taking note of the differences and making the alterations yourself! The stitches are fairly easy to count!
I have a breadth of regrets about this project (and some of it is just post-project blues, y’know?), but you live and you learn, folks! And I definitely learned a lot from this project. :) Will come back here and update once I add the (very expensive) silver star patches I’ve been procrastinating to buy because I’m so broke and so sad about how it turned out. I’m confident all the time I’ve spent on her will culminate in me surely falling in love with her soon enough. <3

I personally feel August by Taylor Swift is not a song for the month of August but specifically for the month September because when you feel like reminiscing "how August slipped away like a bottle of wine" or how the air was salt and there was rust on the door and you were behind the mall for the hope of it all, that's when the song actually hits not right on August 1st but more like on September 1st.

Me? Losing it to the All Too Well 10 Minute Version and being awestruck by Taylor’s Folklore look, partly for gender-related reasons? More likely than you think.

Also Midnights mvs??? Except for anti-hero
OK YEAH GONNA BE A HARD DISAGREE HERE? Anti Hero is fantastic, Bejeweled is STUNNING and so fun, Lavender Haze is one of her best imo??? Like the VISUALS and the way it totally embodies the vibe of the song?
Karma was… yeah look I liked most of the visuals individually but it’s kinda just a LOT together. Also I still don’t LOVE the remix so it was never gonna be my fav.
But overall I think Midnights has been some of her best videos yet like this is such a wild take bestie AGDKAG

sarah I don't know if you've talked about this yet but how do you feel about TTPD being stylized in all caps?? I really like how it looks on the album cover but just typed out in sans serif it looks... aggressive? maybe it's supposed to juxtapose this album with the lowercase girlie™️ aesthetic of folkmore? maybe we should wait to have an opinion about it until after we hear the album? (I do find it very interesting though, especially after retconning "RED" to "Red" for the TV)
Hi! Tbh I only just realized that TTPD is all caps when a friend asked me about it the other day and like I know that it is on the cover but for some reason that did not extend to me realizing that it would be THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT when written down and tbh that is too much yelling for my sensitive soul.
Agree that it just looks like ... heading font (like from a manuscript some might say) on the album cover but outside of that context? 😵‍💫

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE - ERAS TOUR
70s Influence: I definitely expect references to the 70s Midnights aesthetic throughout her costuming. The question is how does one make corduroy stage-appropriate? Psychedelic prints and patterns, saturated tones, exaggerated crochet, fringe, and Gucci-esque disco influences all seem like fun costume possibilities.
Stars/Night: It’s a bit on the nose/literal, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see some kind of reference to constellations, stars, and planetary movements that give reference to the haunted, evening aspect of Midnights.
Bejeweled, Natch: It isn’t a Taylor Swift concert without a requisite sparkly mini moment. I definitely expect at least one fringey sparkle dress somewhere and, of course, a very OTT production that references the corsetry and camp of the “Bejeweled” music video a la a leotard/bodysuit/burlesque moment.
Suiting/Jumpsuits: I demand a jumpsuit on tour. I simply need it. There are also just many opportunities to make this 70s-esque and I also feel like Taylor has really been leaning into tailoring, suits, and blazers the last few years. Plus with that recent gold jumpsuit from The Blonds a custom sparkly jumpsuit for tour doesn’t seem so far-fetched.
Cottagecore Goddess: While for the most part I expect the costuming to center on themes most relevant to Midnights, I also suspect special attention may be made to make sure there are costumed references to the album’s Taylor has yet to tour. Something in the nature of the beautiful Etro gown she wore for the 2021 Grammys performance that was shimmery enough for stage but had just enough flow and billowing sleeves to reference the wood nymph cottagecore energy of folkmore struck the exact right balance.
What are you hoping to see Taylor wear on stage and, equally important, what song are you most looking forward to hearing live?

Honestly Taylor's post explaining the concept of Midnights plus her leaning so heavily on the 70s aesthetic made the fact that it's a pop album feel extremely out of left field. Like sometimes I feel like I'm still waiting for that album. Not that the concept doesn't make any sense at all with the sound - I guess the fact that it was her first album after folkmore did inform peoples expectations too - but still. It was so jarring. I guess personally I was expecting something more slow and contemplative? The reflection of pain and anxiety, not the drama of it.
no exactly. the sound alone was very shocking because she went so strongly back into pop, but also her whole reason for loving making folklore/evermore was because she didnt have to write about her personal life anymore. so to go from soft, story-lead writing about other fictional stories to then, without any warning, going into synth heavy, heavily produced pop music all about her life caused a lot of confusion and mixed feelings. i think if she did a classic rollout of a lead single a month before the whole album came out and told people beforehand she was excited to get back into pop music, that wouldve softened the blow a lot for people.

what are your thoughts on midnights?
soooooo I am a midnights apologist first and foremost and I think it gets somewhat unfairly criticized bc it followed folkmore which are...let's be real pretty great albums so it's a hard act to follow! I think people also were expecting a different sound based off the Aesthetic of the photoshoot and were disappointed when the album sounded different. so I get why people dislike it but I think it deserves to be looked at on its own merits rather than what people were expecting.

As much as i tried to take ttpd for what it is, and I can understand that for taylor this album may be important, but maybe it's too heavy for me? but in a wierd way, because to be honest It's far from being her best album, where is that maturity that existed during folkmore? anyway, it's a personal opinion.
Maybe I'm not in the right headspace. I don't know, as a body of work, it's just not for me, and maybe overall I'm just disconnected from taylor and the fandom, so if you follow me because of taylor, just saying that I'll not be posting about her very often, or maybe not at all, the vibes are just off for me.
The way the fandom is talking about mental health, drug addiction and other stuff, are just too offensive for me and mental health it's not some aesthetic, the way she portraits some stuff in this album it's not doing for me, i'm too emotional? Maybe, but I think that when you talk about mental health, specially someone else's you have to be very careful specially considering that there's a portion of this damn fandom that acts like a cult.
so, considering the current situation in my life this whole thing its enough for me to take a step back.
So again, if you follow me because of tay, feel free to unfollow

my problem w the TTPD roll out so far is that its using the sort of aesthetics related to academia (specifically dark academia) without seemingly diving deeper into what it really means? maybe its just the marketing and shes doing like a bait & switch but i would hope that she, out of all the people, would understand the irony contained in the self declared literary importance that comes with the imagery of quill pens, leathers and books she's putting up all over the place - how all these props are bereft of meaning and emotion, they are just pompous for the sake of it
when she announced the title, i thought this album would be an antithesis to folkmore, i guessed that she would use it to point out that all this old english writer in a cabin stick is exactly that - a costume. i saw it as a triple entendre: the album literally represent the tortured poets department, the one she runs because she's the master in sad girl lyricism; but also that the tortured poet, itself, is departing - and as such the tortured poet could mean both her Muse™ and also Taylor's own persona that she built up over the past few years

what continues to bug me a bit about the conversation regarding album design is that caring about aesthetics seemingly gets painted as a sign of being ungrateful or too demanding or whatever, and it's not? I had this conversation on the blog before and yes Taylor is a musician not a visual artist and yes I can understand why both folkmore and the rerecordings look the way they do (surprise drop with presumably short notice for designers + the focus not being on physical copies but rather streaming and licensing) BUT! the fact remains that for many people having a pretty object to go along with an album they like is incredibly important. (Look at the rise of vinyl sales!) It obviously isn't the main focus but it does a great job at enhancing the experience of music and so it is in no way shape or form weird to be a bit bummed out when you do not get this. And it's also not like Taylor has to design an album all by herself - she has the resources to pay a team of graphic designers that visualize her ideas (and Taylor IS good at tying aesthetics to an album) for her and then allow her to make the final choices on what goes. It is not off base to wish for carefully designed and thought-out album packaging (especially if the artist you want it from has had some incredibly fun packaging throughout her career) and it also is not a slight against Taylor as a person.
