Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is now in bloom throughout Central Appalachia. For many natives steeped in the region’s culture, this gnarled, tenacious evergreen shrub is emblematic of Appalachia’s resilient character and enduring will to survive under the toughest circumstances. The plant is celebrated throughout the region in place names and festivals. But mountain laurel isn’t the only beauty showing off its inflorescence in the local woods; deerberry (Vaccinium stamineum) and mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium) are both at peak gorgeousness. The flower longhorn beetle (Strangalepta abbreviata) with a face full of viburnum pollen made my week.

Banded longhorn beetle (Typocerus velutinus). Adults of this species visit flowers to eat pollen and nectar and can function as pollinators.

you're not the only one who likes the lilies! Found a longhorn beetle, a lovely little hoverfly (or calligrapher fly, not sure), and this very interesting little fuzzy blob! Is it buggish? Don't know, but it's cool!

11/07/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Moorhen and chick which I was thrilled to see tucked away on Kornwestheim lake at Lakeside, I have enjoyed seeing young Moorhens this year. 2. A Six-spot Burnet atop a pyramidal orchid, two stars of recent weeks that I enjoyed seeing on a great lunch time walk today. 3, 4, 8 and 9. Views at Lakeside with the sun just poking through a few times. 5. A Black-and-yellow Longhorn beetle on some wild carrot along the northern path, a riveting insect which I was overjoyed to see late on the walk and make out it's fine colours and features. Brilliant lunch time moments. 6. Dark mullein with red valerian behind. 7. View out the back in a bright patch this morning with a distant horse chestnut tree looking nice. 10. A lovely Holly Blue I enjoyed seeing again at Lakeside today, a neat and polished butterfly which I enjoyed seeing in nice detail.
Other bird highlights at Lakeside were nice views of Great Crested Grebe and chicks and a group of Mallards again, Magpie, a great view of a Dunnock and Woodpigeon, with Goldfinch and Starling enjoyed at home. It was another great day for butterflies with a range of other species seen Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper, Ringlet, Small Skipper, Small White, Marbled White, Red Admiral and Meadow Brown. Common Red Soldier beetle, great views of a bumblebee, a sea of knapweed, thistle, meadow crane's-bill in a bit of sun, bindweed, swathes of yellow agrimony in the meadow landscape, hemp argimony, viper's-bugloss, lady's bedstraw, bird's-foot trefoil and white clover as well as bindweed and agrimony enjoyed on the green outside of Lakeside and crane's-bill probable cut-leaved crane's-bill were other standout species today.

The Slender Flower Longhorn Beetle is a Beautiful Fall Pollinator
The Slender Flower Longhorn Beetle is a Beautiful Fall Pollinator gives readers insights into this pretty and useful beetle. It also discusses range, feeding habits, and how much is unknown about the beetles.
Slender Flower Longhorn Beetle There are lots and lots of beetles here in Florida (and all over the world) and they come in lots of sizes, colors, and even shapes. Most of them tend to be rounded in shape like ladybugs or stinkbugs, but there are a few that are thin and slender. One of the prettiest is the slender flower longhorn beetle (Strangalia famelica). It’s a fairly common beetle in the…

So I went on a phenology walk at Ozark Audubon today. We were mainly looking for any flowers that might have survived the freeze a few days ago, but we found some other neat stuff, too. This was one of the coolest! Look closely at the end of the branch--you can see where it has been neatly carved away, and then snapped in the center after the branch died.
That's the work of the female twig girdler (Oncideres cingulata), a species of longhorn beetle found in the east and midwest United States. She girdles the branch of a hardwood tree, lays her eggs in the branch, and then after it falls the eggs hatch and the larvae feed on the dead wood.

Happy Pollinator Week!
Check out this little longhorned beetle (Analeptura lineola) - there were half a dozen of them going to town on the flowering dogwoods the other day.
