Bug of the Day
Two longhorned beetles in one night, at opposite ends of the spectrum. On the left, we have the teeny, tiny, Eupogonius tomentosus. No common name, and a really bad haircut ;-). On the right, we have the brown Prionid, Orthosoma brunneum, one of the biggest beetles you will ever see in my part of the world.
For scale, the Eupogonius is resting on a single "wave" of the shingle, while the brown Prionid takes up more than 13 of them (including its antennae).

absolutely gorgeous huge guy who gave me a mighty and respectable bite! (below the cut due to. blood [not much]). the bite was entirely provoked and my fault due to me picking it up to relocate it with full knowledge they can give a powerful bite

This is Disterna plumifera, a species of Flat-faced Longhorn Beetles (subfamily Lamiinae). I've encountered Longhorns in this family a few times before, but my only other post so far is this one.
Tumblr media
The latin name plumifera means 'bearing soft, downy feathers', likely in reference to the two feathery nodules on the frontmost part of the elytra, creating a very distinctive appearance alongside the beautiful patterning of blond and brown. The diversity of Lamiinae (and Longhorns altogether) is incredible!

The eyes are fascinating also, seeming to wrap around the scape (base) of the antennae.
No common name (Disterna plumifera).
