As the hike up started with just some rain. As we got higher the rain turned into a snow storm. Seeing the firelookout just barely as the wind and snow pierced your face we finally got inside to warm up and calm our beating hearts. The wind roared and shook the cabin as we just laughed and talked about life. A very fond memory I will never forget. #firelookout

I'm all for camping -- but an entire summer season alone in a fire watch cabin like this is definitely not for me.

It's Eddie's first summer working for the Forestry Department and he's not really sure what to expect from his duty as a Fire Lookout. When the solitude immediately gets to him, Eddie starts talking to himself through the radio. He just didn't expect to find love on the other end.

Listen, Eddie has already dealt with enough of this weird macho shit in the army, and he definitely doesn’t want a second round of that here, of all places. Not when the whole point of coming out here was to get away from the world for a little bit.  So yeah, safe to say the last thing Eddie needs is some asshole being all weird to him while they’re both stuck here in the middle of nowhere. He honestly should just leave it. But only cause Eddie is a little bit of a petty bitch does he feel like he should say at least something. He holds onto the annoyance for just a hair longer before raising his radio up to his mouth again. “Nice to meet you, too, Evan.” Dickhead. Genuinely, Eddie thinks that’s the end of that conversation. First day on the job, and he’s already pissed off one of his very few coworkers. Great. But right before he’s about to toss his walkie across the table, the voice returns. “Buck.”  Eddie freezes. He glances at the radio in his hands. It felt a little safe to admit he wasn’t really expecting much of a response from the other lookout after that. Slow confusion swirls in his chest for a moment. “Everyone calls me Buck,” he explains further, his voice slower and less hostile now. Eddie’s almost tempted to call it kind.  Almost.

Yeah! So this is something I mentioned a few weeks ago. It's inspired by the videogame Firewatch where Percy and Vex are both firelookouts. And since it's the one coming after I finish the fj childhood friend au, I'm going to give you much, but here's an excerpt:

She clicks on a few lights and sits down by the radio, pencil in hand as she looks out for lightning. She notes down the locations of three strikes before the radio crackles to life and Percy’s voice comes through to her. 

“What’s the easiest way to dry hiking boots?” He asks. 

Vex cackles, “Did you get caught in the rain, darling?”

“...Perhaps. Look, I was just going to the supply box to see if there’s any books in it, I didn’t expect the sky to fucking open and start pouring rain.”

“City boy,” Vex teases. “I could smell the rain coming since this morning.”

“And you didn’t tell me?” Percy pouts. “I thought we were friends.”

That is literally their entire time in hope county, “you are weak” “YES I AM LITERALLY A FIRELOOKOUT GOD PLEASE STOP ATTACKING ME” they meet the marshal dude at the start and he tosses them an automatic rifle and they just “please help I just fell out of a helicopter and got hunted in the woods why am I holding a gun”

After a snowy hike in to the lookout yesterday, we harvested a mini tree, crafted tin foil tree decorations and finished the day knitting by the fire. ❤️ We woke up 40ft in the air to the sky on fire, followed by coffee and early morning snowman building. Missing Sand Mountain Fire Lookout today. And looking forward to spending more time on the mountaintop with my dad this summer! . This is an Osbourne Fire Finder, used to find azimuths and vertical angle when spotting fires. Last summer, my dad had me practice with it on all the major points of interest around the lookout. The azimuth is then converted to a legal bearing (based on forestry maps), which is called in to the McKenzie River Ranger District and Eugene Dispatch when reporting a fire. We also report weather readings and visibility throughout the day. . As part of the Sand Mountain Society (sandmountain.org), my brother completed a historic restoration of Sand Mountain’s lookout in 1989, by relocating and renovating a 1930s structure originally located on Whisky Peak.
