Good day, it's me again!
Got some questions for your Astralverse universe.
I tried scouring your blog for astralverse-tagged posts but didn't find sufficient answers so I figured I should present these questions.
It's mentioned in the doc that FTL travel is commonplace but FTL comms is only in experimental stage, by the looks of it. Which is weird in my mind because I thought it should be easier to solve FTL comms first. What's the in-universe lore/explanation for this?
Still on the topic of FTL technology, who's the primary user? Everyone in the Confed, just the founders, a handful of trusted races? And who was the first to kickstart the development for FTL? Is it before or after the Confed was formed?
How is currency handled between races? Is there a unified currency that everyone uses (a la present day European Union with EUR), or is currency exchange/conversion still required?
The flag for The Plex appears to be a flat grey rectangle. I thought it was a bug on my end but it's also displayed like that on desktop. Is that actually what their flag looks like? Or just a placeholder for now maybe?
This one isn't really a question but the Lamian Assembly is described as "society of semi-humanoid serpents" which I glossed over at first, but then clicked with something that I know of: the Lamia people in Elder Scrolls, who also resemble humanoid serpents. I don't know if that's where you took the name from or simply a mere coincidence, but I felt I wanted to bring that up.
Heya! Always happy to answer questions!
1. The specific method of FTL travel in the setting requires some manner of actual mass to work - sending information which has no mass was long thought impractically difficult. The Va'ruun's creators could do it, and consulting with the few of them that are left is how the experimental systems have come to be.
But until recently the method of "FTL" communication was just loading up a communication nano-satellite with messages, having it be carried by an FTL capable vessel into orbit of a given planet, and released, whereupon it transmits it messages to the surface. Not quite instantaneous communication, but decent enough. And importantly, it's fairly cost effective.
2. Everyone in the Confederation has FTL technology. FTL travel (like a lot of the more advanced technology in the setting, was originally a product of the same race that also created the Va'ruun.
The Va'ruun, after inheriting the creators' empire, and being a generous people, gave FTL to any species they befriended - which, when you are the Va'ruun, is extremely easy - any civilization is very likely to respond positively to them for any number of reasons.
3. There is indeed a common currency - the Confederation Unified Exchange note - the CUEnote. It exists both as physical currency (largely for governments, banking, and the like) and digital currency (for most average civilians). They are backed by the Confederation Central Reverse Bank, and derive value from both the largest reverse of physical precious metals in the known galaxy, and a significant reverse of physical member state currency.
Physical CUEnote designs are flat, plasticised sheets roughly 150 x 60 mm in size (roughly equivalent to a modern day US dollar). They exist in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 note varieties - though only notes up to 500 are in widespread circulation.
Regardless, individual member state currencies still exist, and are fully legal tender - conversion rates are calculated by the CCRB and change on a yearly basis. Currencies used by sub-states of member states are also accepted, especially when a member state is not an entirely unified government (to quote a famous Confederation economist: "The oft-cited 'most member states have 4.5 currencies' factoid is actually statistical error. Most member states have a single currency. The Terran Alliance, who lives in the Sol system and has over 180 currencies on one planet, is an outlier and should not have been counted. Please stop counting them, they're giving me nightmares.")
4. That is, in fact, their official flag! The Plex government insists, and has always maintained, that there is a "very beautiful design" adorning it.
Most people are convinced this is the Plex playing a species wide joke.
5. I took the name from more mythological sources there, but so did Elder Scrolls, so convergent evolution.
Ironically enough, the Lamia would actually be better described as "nagas", at least in a modern (furry) sense of the term.
They are, after all, essentially just the Vipers from XCOM:

so everyone knows my ASAU of Persona 5 Royal, A Righteous Rebellion. right? And we're all also aware of @scruffyturtles' Adult Confidant AU?
well I sorta fused them? tldr: i made a (mostly) Adult Confidant AU for ARR! Details below, if you're interested - and if you have any questions about it, please ask @rollthedice-playthecards or this blog here!
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ARR! CANON-STANDARD TRIGGER WARNINGS!
The Fool and Strength (i.e. Igor & Caroline/Justine/Lavenza) are the same. Otherwise, everyone's changed.
The World (i.e. Protagonist) is Tae Takemi!
Her parents were abusive shitheads to her, and she got into a program that helped her escape for Tokyo.
Her first Persona is Merit-Ptah, a fictitious woman purported to be a chief physician of an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh and thus one of the oldest known women in medicine and science.
The Magician is Sadamu Niijima (transmasc!Sae)!
The home invasion that killed Mr. Niijima also led to his death, but Igor came upon his soul and reincarnated him into a hound (because of Shadow Sae's tattoos) for The Yaldabaoth Game™.
His first Persona is Turiddu, a Sicilian bandit whose gang was "legally held responsible" for a massacre, although the entirely of their role in it is disputed.
The Priestess is Sadayo Kawakami!
She was a member of Student Council, but when she brought up Kamoshida's abuse to Principal Omon "Bael" Kobayakawa, she lost her seat. Kobayakawa actually replaces Kaneshiro as the third major target.
Her first Persona is Elissa, legendary founder and queen of Carthage... oh, and I will be shipping her with Tae for my Kawakemi agenda. :)
The Empress is Chihaya Fukurai (Mifune)!
Yuichi "Mammon" Fukurai, her adoptive father, runs Fukurai Foods (Big Bang Burger's owner and more). Chihaya was setting up to inherit the business when Yuichi "changed his mind" and prepared to sell her off in an arranged marriage to Rikio Sugimura.
Her first Persona is Lakshmibai, an Indian rani who rebelled against the Bri'ish.
The Emperor is Sojiro Sakura!
He's a culinary prodigy studying under his adoptive parent (I haven't decided who yet, but they're Azazel) - a TV chef who runs a kids' competition a la Chopped Junior. They definitely abuse some of those kids.
His Initial Persona is Hamlet, the famous Shakespearean Prince of Denmark.
The Hierophant is Makoto Niijima, owner of Cafe Bianca.
She's been looking for her estranged younger "sister" for years now.
The Lovers is Munehisa Iwai!
Munehisa is Shujin’s star athlete. Excels in every sport in Shujin except volleyball, from which he was banned after standing up to Suguru "Asmodeus" Kamoshida.
Kaoru, his younger brother here, takes the role of Shiho, and Akimitsu Tsuda and Masa replace Nakaoka and Takeishi.
His Initial Persona is Barrow, a Great Depression-era criminal who robbed small stores, funeral homes and banks with his partner Ms. Parker.
The Chariot is Ichiko Ohya!
Leader of the photography club. She caught photos of Kamoshida’s dirty deeds in the past and is trying to find a way to expose them anonymously. Oh, and she has a long-distance girlfriend named Kayo.
Her Initial Persona is O'Malley, an Irish pirate queen so violent Elizabeth I considered sending the Royal Fleet after.
Justice is Toranosuke Yoshida!
I sort of split Goro's two roles in this AU. Toranosuke plays the Detective Prince trying to solve the case of mental shutdowns (+ the Phantom Thief case), but his brother-by-choice Benzo Kuramoto plays assassin and mental-shutdown-inducer for Masao Kuramoto, his grandfather. Tora joins the team in Oda's Palace, and they fight Benzo in Kuramoto's Palace - that's where Toranosuke achieves his Second Persona.
Speaking of Personas, his Initial one is Greenlefe, Robin Hood's second-in-command and the only one present at his death.
The Hermit is Takuto Niijima (Maruki)!
Makoto had a brief stint as a police officer, but after a influential asshole (Kuramoto) drove drunk and killed one Tomoyo Rumi, she attempted to dig into the situation and was dishonorably discharged. Soon after, she met Rumi's boyfriend, Takuto (an orphan with one shitty relative), and took him in.
He would be a third-year if he was still in school. He’s wasting away as he grieves Rumi's death. He can’t bring himself to kill himself, but he also doesn't want to be alive anymore.
His Initial Persona is Popol Vuh, a religious text of the mythology and history of the Kʼicheʼ Guatemalans.
The Fortune is Hifumi Hibino (Togo)!
After Mitsuyo disowned Hifumi for coming out as lesbian, Hifumi moved in with her wife Haru (they both end up with Makoto later). Hifumi took up busking/street shogi, not wanting to be reliant on Haru.
The Hanged Man is Akira Kurusu!
Not much for this guy right now - like Canon!Munehisa, he's an ex-yakuza who runs Indomptable, an airsoft store. Ren is his adoptive son.
Death is Sumire Yoshizawa!
A medical misdiagnosis (by her biological mother Yui, not that she knows it) left Sumire's sister in a coma. Ever since, Sumire can't see anyone unconscious without thinking of Kasumi.
Temperance is Ryuji Sakamoto!
An orphaned man who teaches PE at Shujin and moonlights in an escort service to take care of himself and his son Morgana.
Just after his college years, his mom's ex-husband killed her and then killed himself to escape the police, so he has no support system. Thus, he got himself into trouble with a duo of loan sharks so he could look presentable enough to replace Kamoshida.
He, Ann and Shiho were friends in high-school, but he never saw them again after graduating.
The Devil is Ann Takamaki!
An up-and-coming actress working hard to make it big. She's keeping her sexuality (and her girlfriends Shiho Suzui and Mika Abe) under wraps from everyone, including her manager.
At the end of the Confidant, she moves in with her old friend (and future boyfriend) Ryuji after Tae mentions him.
The Tower is Goro Shido (Akechi)!
Goro is a very temperamental young man with no methods of healthily and safely letting out his anger at the world and his shitty, abusive father.
After Shido's heart is changed, Ryuji (and Ann and Shiho) take Goro in.
The Star is Zenkichi Hasegawa!
Even if Zen doesn't know it, he's the best player in the shogi club at Kosei. It's discovered their "team" has been fixing matches, and Zenkichi is determined to find out who's cheating.
Jyun Owada, his senpai and club president, is jealous, and is trying to cause strife between him and his girlfriend Aoi to weaken him.
The Moon is Sophia Ichinose!
Sophia is a Greek immigrant who moved to Japan for work opportunities. She's Tae's science teacher, so Tae really likes her. Her daughter Kuon, however, has fallen in with a HORRIBLY nasty crowd - a bigoted group who hates (among other groups of people) Kuon's adoptive mother. Kuon, naturally, is conflicted, and this leads to conflict between her and Sophia.
The Sun is Haru Hibino!
A young politician whose bold eat-the-wealthy mentality does not sit well with older generations - for example, her father Kunikazu, who disowned her and silently smeared her campaigns so she'd waste her inheritance and never expose his criminality.
In the end of the whole story, Haru legalizes polyamorous marriage!
Judgement is Shinya Oda!
Uses they/them pronouns here.
After Shinya's mother Hanae was killed in cold blood, they joined the SIU to find the killer. She did something to piss off Kuramoto, though, so he and the director do everything they can to keep Shinya away from that.
The Faith is Wakaba Isshiki!
Daughter of Shujin's new counselor. A science prodigy.
I don't have much ideas for her yet, never mind her Personas.
The Councillor is Futaba Isshiki!
Shujin's aforementioned new counselor in the wake of Kamoshida's arrest. Believing the world to be "without life" without her deceased fiancee Kana, her Palace becomes a Graveyard, where she "raises the dead" by fixing their problems.
She only has one Persona - Chac Chel, an important Maya goddess of many things, most prominently both creation and destruction.
The Hope is Yuuki (Mishima)!
His ranged weapon is eye lasers. They use both he/him and they/them.
An A.I. made by Katsuo Akiyama, a regretful high-school bully who caused one of his victims to commit suicide.
Their first Persona is Thyrsus - a giant fennel staff that Yuuki uses like a weapon alongside the Persona aspect of it.
The Apostle is Yusuke Kitagawa!
The only original Phantom Thief to keep the power of Persona.
Ordered by Madarame Ichitaro (the killer of his mother and Police Commissioner) to investigate the Phantom Thieves after a series of mass heart-changings occur again.
Akane has a brother, Natsuhiko, and they share the Jail. Their mother, Takayo (Yusuke's beard) is still dead.
His Persona is Enjolras, and he later gets with Akira.
Lastly, a unique Arcana - The Actor, Morgana Sakamoto!
A theater prodigy at his school (not Shujin or Kosei) and Ryuji's son. He has no clues to his past before Ryuji, and he wants to know, but he also wants his dad to be happy. At the end of the Strikers arc, Lavenza becomes human, and he and Goro get the Sakamotos to adopt her as well.
Reminder once again to post any questions about this AU to @rollthedice-playthecards!

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more …
Tumblr media Tumblr media
354 AD – Early Christian writer St. Augustine was born on this date (d.430) Following the example of St. Paul, Augustine set the standard for confessional literature that was to flourish in the centuries that followed. The pattern, of course, is a detailed listing of one's sins, followed by a narration of some event or events that made one long for salvation, and then an enunciation of the pains and joys of penance with the hope of future redemption.
Augustine confessed not only to having fathered a son, but to friendship that was classically homoerotic. When he was a young man, his closest friend died and Augustine contemplated joining him in death. "I felt that his soul and mine were `one soul in two bodies'; and therefore life was to me horrible because I hated to live as half of a life; and therefore perhaps I feared to die, lest he should wholly die whom I loved so greatly. My longing eyes sought him everywhere." Augustine, of course, cast off all sins of the flesh and becoming one of the great founders of Christian doctrine, admonished us all to do the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1950 – Charles Kaiser is an American author, journalist and academic administrator. In 2018 he was named Acting Director of the LGBTQ Public Policy Center at Hunter College. He is also a nonfiction book critic for The Guardian (US).
His book about one family in the French Resistance, The Cost of Courage (2015) received enthusiastic reviews from The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The Christian Science Monitor, among many other publications. It also won the grand prize at the Paris Book Festival (2015). In 2016 it was published in France by Seuil as Le Prix du Courage.
His blog about the media, Full Court Press, originated on the website of Radar Magazine in the fall of 2007. He continued it at the Columbia Journalism Review and the Sidney Hillman Foundation until the spring of 2011.
The son of a diplomat, Philip Mayer Kaiser, he grew up in Washington, D.C., Albany, New York, Dakar, Senegal, London, England and Windsor, Connecticut. He has lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for many years.
He is the author of The Cost of Courage, 1968 In America, and The Gay Metropolis. The Gay Metropolis was a Lambda Literary Award winner, as well as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. He was a guest on the Colbert Report, where he discussed a new edition of The Gay Metropolis. He wrote the afterword for a 2012 edition of Merle Miller's landmark work, On Being Different: What it Means to Be a Homosexual. That afterword was excerpted on the website of the New York Review of Books. In 2015 he was inducted into the LGBT Journalists Hall of Fame.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
1955 – Caryn Elaine Johnson, best known as Whoopi Goldberg is an American comedian, actress, singer-songwriter, political activist, author and talk show host. She is a strong supporter of the LGBT community.
On April 1, 2010, Goldberg joined Cyndi Lauper in the launch of her Give a Damn campaign to bring a wider awareness of discrimination of the LGBT community. The campaign is to bring straight people to ally with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community. Other names included in the campaign include Jason Mraz, Elton John, Judith Light, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Kardashian, Clay Aiken, Sharon Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne.
Goldberg's high-profile support for LGBT rights and AIDS activism dates back to the 1987 March on Washington, where she was one of few celebrities participating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1969 – Today is the birthday of bi-sexual Scottish actor Gerard Butler. He is best known for his portrayal of King Leonidas in the intensely homoerotic film about the Spartans, 300. He also portrayed the Phantom in the 2004 film version of The Phantom of the Opera. He is slated to portray the iconic Scottish poet Robert Burns in an upcoming biopic.
In the gossip mags, there have been numerous stories of his romantic involvements - including several of romantic and/or sexual involvements with other male stars.
In a 2004 Movieline interview he said:
"I talk about my sexuality, but it's always glossed over. People seem to shy away from the issue. Whenever it is discussed, it's distended and exaggerated. Gerard Butler is Gay. No I'm not. I don't know myself what I am so it can be bewildering to see that being plugged. I have been in relationships with women. And men. That doesn't make me Gay. That doesn't make me straight. It's hard enough to go through these things in my mind without being scrutinised about it so there are times when you want to close the door and say my sexuality is my own personal business."
Tumblr media
1989 – A U.S. federal court ruled that the Armstrong amendment, which would have cut off Washington DC's entire 1989 budget unless the city council exempted religious educational institutions from the gay rights provisions of the city's human rights law, was unconstitutional. William Armstrong introduced the measure after the DC Court of Appeals ruled that Georgetown University was not exempt from the gay rights law and ordered the University to provide facilities to gay & lesbian student organizations that are equal to those provided to other student groups.

Tag nine (9) people you'd like to know better
got tagged by @ladymisteria, thank you <3
Last song: Flowers, by Miley Cyrus. And lots of French stuff that I'm sure no one has ever heard of outside of France.
Currently reading: I just finished Terrible Virtue, by Ellen Feldman. A very interesting book about Margaret Sanger, the activist for birth control and founder of planned parenthood, in the 1910's. Very enlighting.
Currently watching: Just back from viewing Oppenheimer, by Christopher Nolan. Which was great! (if a bit long). As a scientist, I always find it funny all those name dropping of famous scientists who are otherwise reduced to laws and equations. Fermi, Bohr, Feyman, even Lawrence! You know, from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory! Also, I went to see it in 70 mm. I had missed film. And thank god for good old Nolan and his minimal use of CGI. it's a nice eye cleanser after all the CGI from the last Indiana Jones.
Current obsession: As you may have noticed, I'm in a Zorro phase. I've rewatched the Disney show and the Banderas movies, watched the adaptations with Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, Alain Delon and Frank Langella. Also, the Gay Blade. And I'm currently working my way through the 1990 New World Zorro show. the Disney show and the Banderas movies still remain my favorite though. And I'm working on some fanfictions and gifs, naturally :)

My OC’s from other fandoms and their races
Thanks for the tag @redflower001!
[Admin!Danny: Some of the drawings are very old so sorry for the cringe— (There was no need for the drawings but I added it for fun lmao)
Mystic Tsukinami
(Demon) Founder
Tumblr media
Mystic is from the Diabolik Lovers universe, born as a Founder from Shin Tsukinami and another OC, known as DJ. (I have a quite a few OC’s in this fandom, such as Kazuha, Elle, members of the Owl Clan, etc. In fact, this is the fandom in which I have the most OC’s in.)
Deth
(Demon) Sinner
Tumblr media
Now we have Deth! (Read his name as the word “death”). He is from the Hazbin Hotel fandom, so of course he’s a demon lmao I’ve shown him in this blog before, but have updated his design since (the image shown; drew that one a few days ago). He died in the late 1700’s and is a mildly famous performer, as it seems his voice is quite hypnotic. I love his character and design very much, specially since he’s very easy to draw lol
Edgar
(Human) Witch
Tumblr media
Edgar is my giving-a-face-to-the-player OC for The Arcana. Which means he is Asra’s apprentice—however, I did add certain traits to make him a lone character in the story. While I haven’t done much with him in quite a while, I still very much like him a lot.
Cain
Human
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cain is another giving-a-face-to-the-player OC. From the app “Fictif”, there is a story called Last Legacy. I absolutely loved Sage, which sort of inspired me to make a character for the story. (I really recommend you all to play it. The story is not completed, but the plot is very interesting imo)
Adam
Human
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet another giving-a-face-to-the-player OC ^^; Adam comes from the Obey Me! universe! He follows mostly the same backstory given to the MC of the game, which is being a descent of Lilith (if you know the Obey Me! lore, you’ll get it lol). One of my favorite details that I added to his character are the fallen angel birthmarks on his shoulder blades.
Ash/Asher
Human
Tumblr media
Haha… another giving-a-face-to-the-player OC ^^; Ash is from the Mystic Messenger universe! She’s not all that developed, but she came to be after I played Seven’s route. Her latest pairing is Saeran tho—

Hi, I’m Martin, so since this is my blog site, Imma talk about me. 😉 I’m currently a 3rd Year Marketing Major student at the University of San Agustin from which a lot of successful people in their respective fields graduated such as Edgar “Injap” Sia, who was once named as the youngest billionaire in the Philippines, the founder of the famous Mang Inasal that has at least 500 branches all over the country.
I’ve explored several sports before, such as basketball, taekwondo, football, volleyball and Arnis, which I was able to be part of Team Iloilo in the Batang Pinoy, but I guess I’m not really that much of a sporty person.
My current hobby is photography which started around last 2016 then freelancing and what led me to being part of the USA Publications. Funny thing, back when I was still in Assumption Iloilo, I wanted to study at the University of San Agustin to join the Little Theatre when they used to visit us during playfest but currently enjoying my college life as part of the USA Publications and learning a lot from my colleagues.
College life is tiring but trying to make the most of it and enjoy each bit.
Trying to steer my ship well no matter how big the waves are.

Is Blogging Still Relevant in the Age of TikToks and Instagram?
Tumblr media
In the ever-evolving landscape of digital media and communication, the question of blogging’s relevance looms prominently.
Living in today’s era where our media consumption habits are dominated by the instant gratification of TikToks and the visual allure of Instagram, blogging, which once reigned supreme as the platform for personal expression and information sharing, appears to have lost some of its ✨sheen✨.
Tumblr media
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s dive deeper into these three platforms and explore their developments and growths, and where they stand in the invisible ranks of the Internet today.
Let’s turn back the time and celebrate the births of blogging, Instagram and Tiktok!
Tumblr media
Every day, I wake up and reach for my phone almost immediately. While scrolling through the Instagram reels and TikToks sent to me by the people I know, I sometimes pause and just wonder aloud, ‘How did these apps even come about?’.
Well, silly questions like this never bothered me before – everyone’s had their existential crises. But the lingering question of ‘How did the apps that we use today come into existence?’ kept me up some nights, so I knew I had to get to the bottom of this.
Tumblr media
As we all know, blogs are the oldest of the three. Justin Hall is the founder of the first blog called ‘Links.net’ all the way back in 1994, though he referred to it as a “personal homepage” instead (Rioja 2020).
The term ‘weblog’ was later introduced in 1997, followed by the shortened version – ‘blog’ – in 1999, the term we are more familiar with today (Rioja 2020). In the early 2000s, blogging became a famous online activity as more blogging platforms and websites came to life, increasing Internet surfers’ accessibility to the blogging industry (Rioja 2020). By 2010, blogging had permeated the general public and became mainstream (Rioja 2020).
As the years pass and technology advances, the blogging experience we know of today was conceived.
Tumblr media
Instagram – the ‘middle child’ of the three – was conceived in 2010.
However, did you know that Instagram’s first life began way before then, and was originally called ‘Burbn’ instead as a nod to the founder’s love for bourbons (Langrio-Chafkin 2012)?
Long story short, just like Instagram today, Burbn was also a photo-sharing app that allowed users to share locations (Garber 2014).
However, it was found that most of Burbn’s users left the location check-in feature untouched but went wild with sharing and posting pictures (Garber 2014). This led the founders to shift their focus on Burbn’s photo-sharing abilities and scrapped almost everything else. After months of research and experimentation, Burbn was reborn as Instagram in 2010 (Garber 2014).
Tumblr media
Lastly, introducing TikTok, the youngest of these three platforms. Despite its greeness, TikTok has arguably one of our generation’s largest and most active user bases.
In 2016, Chinese company ByteDance introduced a Chinese app called Douyin and its counterpart app called TikTok, which was launched internationally (Anderson 2020). When ByteDance merged Musical.ly (a lip-synching video-creation app) with TikTok in 2018, many more people downloaded TikTok, and the numbers only increased after Vine was shut down (Anderson 2020).
Tumblr media
Today, TikTok is viewed more as a creative platform than a conventional social media platform, where users can break away from traditional visual styles, narratives, and online customs of the past to create and share short-form videos as they desire.
The rise of Instagram and TikTok over the recent years has introduced new forms of content consumption and creation that shifted the digital landscape.
Understandably, most Internet users nowadays prefer the two apps over blogging for several reasons, such as the ability to share visual and short-form content, a more mobile-friendly experience, and algorithm-driven feeds which curate the posts and videos according to the user’s preferences.
So… Does this mean that blogging is dead?
Simply put, no.
Tumblr media
While it may seem like TikTok and Instagram are dominating the media world nowadays, each platform, in fact, still has its own user base due to its distinct features. Although blogging may not seem as prevalent as it used to be, people still enjoy consuming and creating blogs, especially if they prefer reading longer and more informational written posts.
Safe to say, blogging is definitely still relevant in today’s age of TikToks and Instagram. As long as the passion for reading and writing persists, blogging may never see the face of extinction 💪

Note
to preface this, this is not hate i just kept rambling bc i do feel strongly abt the matter, apologies and feel free to disregard if you'd rather not have discourse on your blog. kick was literally (co) founded by people who felt that twitch's policies and their enforcement against hate speech, slurs, etc (which aren't that great to begin with) were too restrictive. adin ross is a co-owner, or at least he has claimed as much and not been challenged by kick itself. that platform has a userbase that absolutely would harass the kind of people in sapnap's audience, so being in his chat or watching list really just puts a target on them/us. and kick's moderation tools are infamously poor. like yes, twitch needs to be toppled from its monopoly but not at the cost of giving a larger piece of the proverbial pie to kick of all places. twitch's leadership is interested in profit at the expense of their employees and users both, and they have no interest in protecting or empowering marginalized creators or users. it's shit, but it's ultimately a matter of them not caring, while kick's leadership is actively hostile to marginalized people, and that is going to make a difference in what changes can be made at all. (and about amazon, kick still uses amazon servers and webservices for the actual streaming portion of their platform, so... ) finally, while i absolutely agree that the way twitch treats its streamers, including things like the revenue split, is horrid, quite a bit of sapnap's stated reasoning about things like twitch not offering him a contract (beyond regular partner i guess) or the ceo not knowing him, are kind of... not unreasonable when you look at how much he has actually USED twitch. he's had the sapnap account for years and only streamed three hundred odd hours, even if you add the alt streams it's... not that much. and most of all, it's never really been consistent. he may stream every day for like a week but then its months of nothing outside like, mcc. only going live for special events isn't going to net one a big contract, and there is only so far the fame of being one of the OG dsmp members will get you. i like sapnap, but i think if he truly believes kick's ceos making vague non-specific promises of "making the site better" he is being naive, because what they're looking for it most definitely just another "famous" name (big mcyt internet phenomenon or whatever) and title (nrg co-owner) they can use to advertise their site and legitimize it. going by his paste bin, they played at his ego, and because he felt slighted by twitch (not entirely unfairly given how twitch sucks in supporting and even just appreciating or fairly paying their creators), he took it. trying to migrate his fanbase over to a platform headed and controlled by people who actively hate the people making up most of that fanbase is, frankly, ludicrous. but kick doesn't need his viewers, they need his name, so why would they care? like yes, generally even founders can be replaced eventually, but in this case, these owners also own the crypto gambling bank thing that funds all of kick, so you can't really force them out unless or until the platform can carry itself - and the multiple other attempts at making twitch competitors kind proved that that is hard to achieve. they control the money, they control the platform, and if they want the platform to be a space where they and those like them can be as hateful and bigoted as they want, that's what it's going to be.
these are all very valid points, and I hope my response to this won't come off as a massive BUT in defense of kick
that platform sucks. that much is obvious, and if Ross is really the co-owner that's just all the more reason to feel unsafe to be there. I don't know nearly enough about all their policies and given everything that has been said about them I never really had much interest in looking into them further. it's just another site that is full of toxic hypermasc culture
I won't go and defend Sapnap's decision to move there, either, but I think there is a lot he is not telling us (be it because he is unsure or because of contracts) that made him feel that a move like this is worth it. he isn't stupid, he knows his fanbase is massive and consists of many marginalized groups, so if he thought that kick is better than twitch even with a massively queer and poc fanbase, he must have had his reasons. I doubt he didn't talk this through with Dream, George, his managers etc.
I also don't want to entirely y'know defend twitch with their policies. cause their policies regarding hate speech are absolutely shit. remember when they banned the word "simp"? because people didn't like it? but did absolutely nothing about all the sexual harrassment going on? yeah. I also want to add that my automod that twitch provides is sometimes more than unreliable and censored a regular for saying "long gay cat" in chat. loosening the restrictions will definitely cause damage to those who deserve to be protected the most, but the restrictions did little to protect them to begin with, in my experience.
from what I remember of early twitch it was pretty loose like kick is now. big names coming in might result in tightening policies, even if that comes off as wishful thinking. all platforms ended up doing so, sooner or later.
what I do find a little ridiculous is how people insist that the majority of the userbase of kick are the type to harass Sapnap's fans which, while true, should not matter as much as we make it out to be? I genuinely doubt that they will all immediately flock to Sapnap's channel and spam slurs in chat and be in such overwhelming numbers it will be unbearable. and if it was, and became a regular issue, Sapnap would definitely do something about it. unless the majority of their userbase is likely to open streams of chill people and then target every person in chat
I dunno, it's much ado about nothing so far, we only got an announcement and it's hard to judge how things will play out after the move. it's fair that streamers, especially with as big a following as Sapnap, want better deals out of twitch. I don't know about them but the affiliate deals are not that great and very far from fair. moving to kick might not be the best thing but honestly, what other choice is there other than maybe YouTube?
we're all panicking ahead of time as this fandom has a tendency to, so idk. let's all take a deep breath and see how things play out before jumping into conclusion. it's certainly gonna be a lot less bad than people insist, and worst case scenario I'm sure the vods will be reuploaded to YT by some good samaritan.

Unlocking High Growth Innovation through Diversity and Inclusion
Hydro Nation Chair’s David Millar reflects on increasing diversity and inclusion in Innovation following our programme’s recent internship as part of the Career Ready Programme. Please note that this blog is part one of two, with part two to follow, providing insights arising from the Career Ready internship.
If you were asked to name a famous innovator or entrepreneur, the majority of people would likely name someone they have seen in media or perhaps someone they admire, names such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Deborah Meaden, or Sam Altman. These lists are often dominated by white males, giving the impression that the world of entrepreneurship is only for those of a specific gender or ethnicity. This feels at odds when most of our world is working hard to celebrate and support diversity and gender freedom.
I asked my 8-year-old the same question recently and I got the expected answers in line with what he sees online or hears about at school but there was another proudly shouted addition to that list – ‘mummy’. My wife is an entrepreneur, or as she prefers founder. She runs her own sustainable dog food company, which she built on her own, at the same time we were at the start of building our family, smack bang in the middle of the COVID pandemic. Three years in, she is seeing 6 figure revenues and considerable month on month growth, making her a well deserving member on my son’s list of inspiring founders.
Given my wife was a Baroque violinist when I first met her and has now transitioned into a high growth business founder, it would seem that the world of entrepreneurship can be accessible to all individuals, including women and not just men. It has not been an easy journey, but with help, guidance, true grit and determination, there are amazing business opportunities to be had.

So why aren’t we seeing more female founders and what can be done about it?
Championing diversity and inclusion in the tech sector has been a passion of mine ever since I started working full time to support business founders.
In my current role, leading the charge of technology innovation at the Hydro Nation Chair Research and Innovation Programme (HNC), I am lucky to be part of a very diverse team with a 60/40 gender split, in favour of females. The industry itself is also much more diverse in terms of gender split. Building on this great foundation, I have been working closely with my colleagues to better understand the challenges of diversity and inclusion in the tech and entrepreneurial space and what we can do with our programme to address some of these issues.
Following the release of the Scottish Government Report: ‘Pathways: A new approach for women in entrepreneurship’ (published in February 2023), we wanted to support the momentum behind the important activities highlighted in the report. In 2023-34, I was a Career Ready mentor supporting an S5 student called Laura from St Modan’s High School in Stirling.
As part of the Career Ready programme, Laura had a 4 week paid internship working with myself in the HNC team. The focus of her internship was to review the ScotGov Pathways report, interview a selection of female founders and business leaders, gather their views of the report findings and its recommendations and then make recommendations back to the HNC team on how we can improve our programme to support more diversity and inclusion. For these recommendations, please see part two of this blog coming next month.
Entrepreneurship and the world of tech start-ups were new areas for Laura but very quickly, given her own interests in STEM, became of great interest. While reviewing the report, Laura was particularly surprised at some of the data points and reflected on the lack of female entrepreneur role models that she could name. The Pathways Report highlights the lack of female role models as one of the challenges in this space and has some pretty dire statistics for example, funding received by women from friends and family was just 14% compared to the 65% received by women - a factor of 5 times less. In terms of private investment in their businesses, women receive less than 2p for every £1 of total private investment and only 4% of university spinouts were all female-founded as opposed to 75% for all-male founders.
The Pathways report highlights some of the reasons for these dire statistics, covering themes such as:
women feelings of "not belonging" in entrepreneurship, which affects their confidence and self-belief;
formally-defined pathways into entrepreneurship are unclear, while informal pathways and networks underserve women;
that General education and the normalisation of entrepreneurship as a valid career path is largely not present in the education system;
and as shown in the statistics, that women received far less investment than men across all stages of investment.
Converse to these dire statistics and themes, Laura was intrigued by evidence that indicated that businesses with more diverse teams, especially those led by women, can perform better and grow more over time - my wife’s business being s a great example of this. Laura reflected on this as a clear opportunity to encourage and support more women to start their own business if we could build momentum behind the report and execute its recommendations.
As we drive forward towards net zero and beyond, if ever there was a time to increase the number of high performing businesses it is now.
Laura has now completed her Career Ready programme, finding it extremely beneficial in helping her decide on her own pathway post-secondary school, as well as opening her eyes to the world of water management, entrepreneurship and challenges facing female founders. Despite all the existing challenges facing female entrepreneurs, I'm delighted that Laura would now seriously consider starting her own business if the opportunity arose. Laura is preparing for her final exams and has an unconditional place on offer at her first choice University where she plans to study Mechanical Engineering.

For more information on the Career Ready Programme please visit their website. This is the second time David has been a Career Ready mentor and he would highly recommend it to anyone looking to develop their skills as leaders and support an S5/S6 student with building really important skills and helping them with difficult decisions in terms of pathways beyond school.
