Feel free to request or suggest deities! This list will be done in order but you can ask for me to complete one that’s further down the list.
This list is subject to change. There are probably repeat deities (deities who go by multiple names, parts of groups like the Horae or Charities who are mostly grouped together, etc.) on this list. Some deities are not on here. Some names are spelt wrong or different.

The Cult of the Muses
The Mousai (The Muses) are the nine Goddess students of Apollo, presiding over many things such as poetry, writing, song, and dance. The nine Muses consist of Kleio, Euterpe, Thaleia, Melpoomene, Terpsikhore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Ourania, and Kalliope.
They had multiple shrines and temples but the main two areas of their worship were on Mount Helikon in Boiotia and Pieria in Makedonia.
The Akadameia (the school right outside of Athens) has an altar to the Muses alongside Hermes.
In the city of Troizenos in Argolis, it is described that Hypnos is dear to the Muses. The group have an altar together that was put there by Ardalos, son of Hephaistos. From Ardalos came the flute, which is where the Muses get their epithet Ardilides.
In Sparta, of Lakedaimonia, they have a sanctuary built to the Muses in honor of the war music they use. They used instruments such as flute, harp, and lyre instead of the trumpet.
At the Olympic home of Elis, their altar is located between Dionysos and the Kharites.
The Muses are the ones that hold charge of Mount Helikon, and are described to "make their fair, lovely dances upon highest Helikon and move with vigorous feet." and "dance on soft feet about the deep-blue spring and the altar of the almighty Zeus".
The first to make their sacrifice to the Muses on Mount Helikon was Ephialtes and Otos, making it sacred to the Goddesses.
It is thought by Mimnermos that there are the elder Muses, daughters of Ouranos, and the younger Muses, daughters of Zeus.
As you enter the Grove of the Muses, there is the spring of Aganippe. This spring circles Helikon. It was thought that she was the nurse of the Muses.
Orpheus was often depicted with the Muse Kalliope, for he was her son, and famed lyrist. There is a statue of him on Helikon near the river Olmeios and the spring of Pegasos. It was in Pieria, a mountain in Makedonia, that Orpheus met his end by the Maenads, his bones held within a stone urn where he died.
In Delphoi, they have a shrine where the springs rise. The water was used for libations, Kleio overseeing it all.
Cult Epithets of The Muses:
Pierides - Of Pieria
Olympiades - Of Mt Olympus
Helikônides - Of Mt Helikon
Ilisiades - Of the Ilissus River
Ardalides - Of Ardalos
Parthenoi Helikôniai - Maidens of Helikon

Theoi Info Sheets Series Part 6: Apollo & Artemis - The Divine Twins
"... but the opinion most universally received was, that Apollo, the son of Zeus and Leto, was born in the island of Delos, together with his sister Artemis; and the circumstances of [their] birth there are detailed in the Homeric hymn on Apollo, and in that of Callimachus on Delos."
- Comp. Apollod. i. 4. § 1; Hygin. Fab. 140.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would describe my relationship with The Divine Twins as... unbalanced. I have never felt drawn or called to Lady Artemis; despite my love of deer, the woods, and the years I spent working in childcare - I have always felt that the doors of Her temple were closed to me. I personally feel that part of this lies in my transgender identity; this is not to say that transmen or men in general cannot worship Artemis - I've seen quite a few transmen on Tumblr who are joyous devotees to Her. But personally, I have always felt distanced from Artemis.
I do feel as though Artemis tried to call to me when I was young, but I did not feel aligned with Her energies or drawn to Her domains. Then, when I transitioned, I got the sense that Artemis felt betrayed; like She had laid claim to me and was waiting for me to join Her retinue - but instead I left womanhood behind and She felt personally insulted.
I say all of this, not in any way to disrespect Lady Artemis - or to say my experience is indicative of her energy and character towards other devotees. I simply say all of this to share my experience.
On the reverse - Lord Apollo is my patron deity. There is no God or entity that I hold in higher regard. I feel as though Lord Apollo has been quietly waiting for me all my life, almost as if He knew my destiny lied in being his devotee but He wanted me to come to Him on my own.
That isn't to say he hasn't been present in my life before my journey into Hellenic Polytheism - but I do believe He has let the muses guide me rather than His own hand. I felt Kleio enter my life in middle school when I first began writing poetry, and Gods - Euterpe and Melpomene have been with me since I began writing music in the second grade. Ouranie entered my life later, moreso in college when astrology became a larger part of my life and personal practice. But now I've gone off on a tangent, haha.
I've written about Lord Apollo in many other posts on my blog - so feel free to check the Lord Apollo tag if you'd like to read more about my relationship and devotion to him.

Ohh I have a request!
Bradley and one of the muses (maybe Euterpe the muse of music).
Either fluff, smut or both.
Tumblr media
I love this concept! Enjoy:
Piano Man
"Play it again for me, sailor." You chuckled as stretched out on the top of the piano in the smoky bar.
"Euterpe, I already told you, I'm an aviator, not a sailor." Bradley corrected you.
"And I'm a muse, not a goddes, but you still worshipped me least night." You sighed, still feeling the slight ache of just how deep he'd been inside you.
"Touché" He shot back with a wink before stroking his fingers along the piano keys to play "Great Balls of Fire" once more for you.
You were captivated as you watched him. It was rare that someone impressed the muse of music as much as he did. But from the moment you'd heard hum sing and play that first night all those weeks ago, you hadn't been able to get him out of your head.
You sigh. It was his last night on the island before going back to California. If you had it your way, you'd keep him there with you, playing tunes for you for all eternity, but sadly, you couldn't convince him to stay.
That night, at last call, he led a chorus of Piano Man. The entire bar sang with him. Later, he took your home and stroked you in all the right places before kissing you goodbye.
Six Months Later
You stepped out of your Uber and onto the sand. You traded the sunrises of Greece in for California sunsets.
You walked into the bar that Bradley had told you about during your time together.
It was loud and crowded with khaki clad men and women, but there he was, sitting at the piano, clad in his Hawaiian shirt, playing the song that and first catch your attention.
You grabbed a beer and strolled up behind him and leaned close before whispering in his ear, "Play it again for me, sailor."
Bradley froze and turned around slowly. He blinked a few times to make sure you were really there.
Once he was sure it was you, he hopped off the bench to pick you up for a searing kiss.
The Hard Deck erupted in cheers a wolf-whistles.
Bradley settled back onto the bench with you firmly in his lap before playing your song for you one more time.

The Muses: Greek Gods and Goddesses
Tumblr media
“We are the muses Goddesses of the arts And proclaimers of heroes”
If your house is anything like mine, you probably have quite a few Disney Movies stashed around. Even before we had Munchkin, Mr Moose and I bonded over our love of movies, songs and quoting lines.
Tumblr media
These 5 ladies are sassy, have some really good songs and are so pretty. Currently, as an adult with an appreciation of History, Mythology and Art, I love the Muses even more.
Tumblr media
We recently added a 3 year old Nubian doe named Calliope to our group, she goes by Callie for short. She’s sassy, tries to be in charge and definitely fits her name.( In fact, if you’re curious about which Alcohol brand it is. There’s a brand of wines called Calliope Wines based out of Canada, so we didn’t even have to change her name!)
Consequently, I wanted to do some more research on this set of ladies. Who are literally referred to as THE Inspirations of Science, The Arts, Astronomy and more.
History Behind The Muses
Tumblr media
The Muses Origin Story(s)
The daughters of Zeus and The Titaness Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, the Muses lived on Mount Olympus entertaining the Gods. Later, they were moved to Mount Parnassus or Mount Helicon depending on who’s research you follow.
However, the other origin story of the Muses is that they are water nymphs who sprung from the four sacred springs on Mount Helicon when Pegasus proceeded to stomp his hooves upon the ground. Most people follow the origin of them being daughters of Zeus.(Which makes the movie Hercules, about their little brother.)
Putting a Face to the Names
Tumblr media
Worshipers of The Muses
Being Goddesses, The Muses had their own following of Worshipers. Scattered all over South and Central Greece, worshipers of The Muses were commonly found at either Mount Helicon in Boeotia and Pieria in Macedonia. Festivals were held frequently all over Greece, full of Poetry Competitions and Dancing and Singing. Pythagoras, the inventor of the Pythagorean Theorem is one of the more famously known followers of the Muses.
Who Are The Muses?
There are 9 Muses total, each with a focus on her area of expertise and inspiration. Some have had children, others have not.
Muse #1-Calliope
Tumblr media
Epic Poetry is a lengthy narrative told in a storytelling manner. In fact, some well known examples include Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey as well as Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The Muses and their mother are actually mentioned in both of Homer’s works.
Calliope has several sons depending on the lore. The 2 most known are Orpheus and Linus. Orpheus was the great musical hero of Greek mythology, and Linus was the inventor of rhythm and melody.
Tumblr media
Calliope is known to have been the inspiration for Heroic poems and Rhetoric Arts.
Calliope is physically represented as wearing a gold crown and typically carrying a scroll, book or tablet in her hands.
Muse #2- Clio
Tumblr media
Clio is known as the pro-claimer, glorifier and celebrator of history, great deeds and accomplishments. She is the inspiration and namesake for various modern brands.
Clio has one son, Hyacinth. Story has it; Clio, after reprimanding the goddess Aphrodite for her passionate love for Adonis, was punished by Aphrodite, who made her fall in love with Pierus, king of Macedonia. In spite of that, they bore a son named Hyacinthus, a young man of great beauty who was later killed by his lover, the god Apollo. From his blood sprang a flower (the hyacinth).
Clio is often represented holding an open scroll or sitting by a stack of books.
Muse #3- Erato
Lyric Poetry is poetry expressing personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in first person. However, lyric poetry is of no relation to the word lyrics when talking about song lyrics.
She is typically represented holding a wreath of myrtle and roses or holding a Kithara(lyre) or a Golden Arrow.( She’s often represented accompanied by Cupid or Eros as well)
Muse #4-Euterpe
She serves as the inspiration for many courses and dialects in language. As well as the inspiration for various instruments.
Muse #5-Melpomene
The inspirations from Melpomene include; tragedy dramas, rhetoric speeches and Melos, the succession of musical tones constituting a melody.
Melpomene is always represented holding a tragedy mask. Other representations can include boots commonly worn by tragedy actors or a knife or sword held in her opposite hand.
Muse #6-Polyhymnia
Sacred Poetry is a collection of works including hymns and other religious texts.
Polyhymnia is the inspiration for Divine Hymns, Mimic Art, Geometry and Grammar.
Her representation is a serious expression, a finger held to her lips in silence and a long cloak or veil.
Muse #7-Terpsichore
She is the inspirations for Dance, the Harp and Education as a whole.
Terpsichore is the other Muse known as Mother of Sirens. One of the most known Sirens, Parthenope, cast herself into the sea after her songs failed to ensnare Odysseus.
Muse #8-Thalia
Idyllic Poetry or Idyll Poems, are typically a short poem, descriptive of rustic life.
Thalia is known as being the inspiration for Comedy Drama, Geometry, Architectural Science and Agriculture.
Muse #9- Urania
She is associated with universal love and astronomical writings. It was said Urania could tell the future by the arrangement of the stars.
Urania is said to have inherited her majesty and power from her father Zeus, and her beauty and grace from her mother.
The “10th” Muse
Little is known about her history and many of her works have been lost to time. There are several theories that she is the inspiration for the word Lesbian and other LGBTQ+ phrases. One of her only completed works that can be found is a poem titled “Ode to Aphrodite”.
The Muses’ Purpose
The Muses were created to help the People and the Gods to forget their troubles and suffering through art, music and poetry. In fact, these 9 women were very close to each other and, subsequently, still serve as inspiration for many of the Arts today.
Mentions of the Muses in Popular Culture
In contrast to Homer and Dante’s works, the Muses are mentioned in a number of modern cultures as well.
My favorites include the Disney movie “Hercules” where the Muses are the musical narrators throughout the movie. My other favorite is the Book series Xanth by Piers Anthony. In Xanth, the Muses live on Mount Parnassus and are one of several residents visited to be asked questions pertaining to their( the visitor’s) quests.
Other examples include:
Rick Riordan’s mythical series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo.
South Korean all-female idol group debuted under the name ‘Nine Muses’
The show Charmed, an episode features The Charmed Ones who must protect the Muses from a warlock who is trapping them into a magical ring.
The Muse Calliope is a character in the graphic novel Sandman, by Neil Gaiman.
There are tons of other pop culture references to the Muses, from Animes, Comics, Musical, Movies and Books.
Who Inspires You?
In a word, the Muses are an Inspiration, not only in Ancient Greece but also in the modern realm as well. Who is your favorite Muse? Will you be calling on a Muse next time you need inspiration?

okay, continuing from my last post. i’m using a very loose interpretation of greek mythology here because idv’s universe is different from our own & to compensate for my lack of knowledge, whoops!
what if the kreiburg’s, in the ancient past, were blessed or rewarded by euterpe somehow, perhaps for being one of the last/longest standing families to worship her even as the centuries passed?
this is what gave them their incredible skill at music and composing. the kreiburg’s in the modern day/idv’s era don’t exactly believe in euterpe’s literal existence in the same way, though maybe some of them do, but they still value their traditions and religious practices involving her very highly.
however, for whatever reason, frederick wasn’t blessed by euterpe, perhaps due to being chosen by another muse - melpomene, instead. i’m not sure what caused her to choose him in particular. maybe it was due to the death of his twin, or his psychotic disorders, and she empathized with him due to those things - or maybe they were caused by her blessing instead. i’m unsure at the moment, though i’d really like to develop this point more...
regardless, though, frederick still inherited his family’s love of music - but as someone not favored by euterpe, his composing skills could never match up to their standards. in contrast, to an extent, he’s followed by tragedy instead - which might have influenced his ultimate fate in the manor as well.
melpomene might consider him a child of hers of sorts, and since in some sources she was said to be the mother of the sirens, maybe that links frederick to the sirens in some way as well?? i’m not sure yet. i’d just love for him to have some link to the sea if possible because i’m obsessed with it help
ALTERNATIVE VERSION: euterpe and the muses don’t actually exist and are merely a product of myth/religion, but the kreiburg’s still believe in them/worship them. frederick in particular prays to euterpe often, asking for guidance for his composing and believing that he missed out on her blessing - but in reality, the kreiburg family’s skill in music is just a genetic talent that frederick happened not to inherit. he feels a connection of sorts with melpomene due to the tragedy of his sibling’s death and his lack of talent, but it’s not one he wants to acknowledge at all. that could be all/it could end there, but maybe some other supernatural force - afterall, we know the supernatural exists in idv through characters like hastur and yidhra - heard his prayers, and responded to them in it’s own way...

(For him ~ Abraxas calls in vain)
He and I are both seasoned denizens of qlippoth
He and I are a both citizens of night.
Not that he was a chance of him ever being aware of my lesser light;
Eternities part us.
There is no such thing as being hermits together
that’s not how being a hermit works.
Rather, I was aware of him as stars are aware of each other,
distant specks of light through a vastness of cold
glimmers of being among nothingness
He and I were both wanderers in the borderlands
surveying all those things which they all disown
which they find no use in,
which they refuse to see:
The chronicles of bestial carnography
the oceans of flesh
and the thorn-chains of hatred and spite
the crumbling ruins of the wasteland,
where insubstantiality gapes open
and the hope runs out like tar from something wounded
the devouring abyss
and its flatness in definition.
Here I have sat,
as a lady in a tower, making a lair in the featureless,
sometimes gazing at the word,
recording it, sometimes weaving it in tapestries
and in that weaving, I imagine sometimes someone like him
stained with all wordly fluids,
wandering through corridors of fire
in passage through the baccanals and saturnalia
the night gone black his only comfort,
and in his worship of euterpe,
surely thinking of being heard by somebody like me,
to whom most of the melodies don’t sing,
two lights hung in endless darkness,
two sucking symbionts in the vast black womb of night
Never in this world could I have loved you,
not truly, once reality set in
some faint lights are better left as dreams
as the imprinted yolk-sacs so they may soothe us everforth
I think we both already knew that we would never leave our coffins

Research - Philodemus & Ancient Greece
I thought it useful to conduct some research into Philodemus and his life, since familiarizing myself with his history may help to properly influence my animation and style. Me and my tutor also agreed that researching different aspects of Ancient Greece, including the mythology and art, would also be valuable in influencing my style and condensing it down into something that fits the poem I’m to animate. I want to be able to properly represent the subject I’m animating, even if only visually, and after reading this particular poem, feel it due dilligence to at least understand Philodemus and his thought process to see how far that will take me also.
Philodemus
Tumblr media
Above all else, Philodemus of Gadara was an epigrammatist and Epicurean Philosopher, whos works were largely thought to be lost until their discovery in Herculaneum ruins in the 18th Century. Philodemus prided himself on his philosophical values, and rather frequently wrote about them when manuscripting. Philodemus’ life before he moved to Italy is not well documented, but it’s thought the town he hailed from also produced several other famous poets and philosophers.
When it came to education and learning, Philodemus devoted himself to Zeno of Sidon and became a lifelong follower, adopting and supporting his philosophical views. Upon the death of his master, Philodemus left Athens, though it is also theorized this occured because of his incurring divine wrath in the form of an epidemic due to his teachings.
Much of the research and biography about Philodemus is uncertain and come from several varying sources, but for certain the general concensus is that the man was eloquent, intelligent and rather kind. People of the time tended to respect the man more than his controversial writings, but in the modern day, Philodemus’ teachings and scriptures are hailed as being some of the first instances of Epicurean Philosophy, and are respected for their boldness.
The Muses
Tumblr media
Since the Muses are directly referenced in Philodemus’ Poem, I thought it best to conduct at least a little bit of research into them, to document the basics and learn of their importance to the Greeks; it may help to skew my perception and improve my visualisation of them in my animation.
An exert I found has this to say of the Muses:
‘The Muses were the Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, the adored deities of song, dance, and memory, on whose mercy the creativity, wisdom and insight of all artists and thinkers depended. They may have been originally three in number, but, according to Hesiod and the prevailing tradition he established, most commonly they are depicted as the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne.’
The Muses, from what I could find are referred to by various names and backgrounds, but this list seems to be the accepted one:
• Thalia (“The Cheerful One”) was the Muse of Comedy and was often portrayed holding a comic mask or a shepherd’s crook;
• Urania (“The Heavenly One”) was the Muse of Astronomy, and you can often see her holding a globe;
• Melpomene (“She Who Sings”) was the Muse of Tragedy, and she is either holding a tragic mask or some other symbol of tragedy (sword, club, buskins);
• Polyhymnia (“She of the Many Hymns”) was the Muse of Hymns and sacred poetry, often depicted with a pensive look hidden behind a veil;
• Erato (“The Lovely One”) was the Muse of Lyric Poetry; naturally, she’s usually represented with a lyre;
• Calliope (“The One with a Beautiful Voice”) was the Muse of Epic Poetry; Hesiod claims that she was the foremost among the nine, since “she attends on worshipful princes”; Calliope can often be seen holding a writing tablet;
• Clio (“The Celebrator,” “The Proclaimer”) was the Muse of History, and, quite fittingly, she usually holds a scroll;
• Euterpe (“She Who Pleases”), was the Muse of Flute-playing, which is why she is time and again portrayed with an aulos;
• Terpsichore (“The One Delighting in the Dance”), was the Muse of Choral Lyric and Dancing; as expected, she is usually shown dancing and sometimes holding a lyre.
(Source: https://www.greekmythology.com/Other_Gods/The_Muses/the_muses.html)
The Muses served as inspiration to the Greeks, being Goddesses of the arts, science and literature, so it’s really no surprise they are so frequently mentioned and looked up to in poems from the time. I am imagining Philodemus to have written the muses into his poem in place of any other deities, since the aspects they represent link more closely to Epicurean Philosophy than anything else. Visually, the muses are tall and have a bold feminine presence, which I feel may be an aspect that influences my own interpretation of them.
Greek Art
Greek art is perhaps some of the most recognisable around the globe, and comes generally in a select few forms: Sculptures, Architecture, Pottery and Paintings. I want to focus in particular on pottery here, as well as some sculpturing, since I feel that could be a positive influence on the way I design and model my characters.
Tumblr media
On pottery, the art sticks to a very limited colour pallette, that being the colour of the actual clay pot, and blacks and whites for emphasis and design. I really like the limited colours, and I think I could use that concept rather cleverly in some instances in my animation. The characters are of course all flat, but have strong structures and designs, with prominent features like noses and arms. This, above all else, will be what influence my own characters.
Tumblr media
Sculpturing tends towards the more realistic side, and the detail present is incredible. Such time and effort went into modelling and chiselling every part of these sculptures that I had to give them credit in my research. I don’t think I’ll take much beyond anatomical research from this, but it’s still a useful point of study.
