~ Eventually, she does return to Olympus, and back to Nyx’s palace. She sits down onto the cold floor again in exhaustion, sighing heavily. Angry tears of ichor start to threaten to spill, as now that she’s alone with her thoughts the hatred she feels has started to occupy her mind once again. The pain the seizes her body when this happens is immeasurable, but she refuses to make it obvious, only shaking a little bit. ~
Collect yourself already. We have things to discuss. Do you know why I wanted you to kill Minthe?
Something about.. your son being one of Persephone’s suitors.. and Minthe being in the way.
Yes, exactly. But it seems like your little murder had consequences.
Well that’s not my fucking fault now is it.

"Songbirds and the Stars" (part 9 in my Orpheus and Eurydice" series Orpheus’ head and Lyre, still singing, float out to sea, eventually coming upon the shore of Lesbos. Orpheus head continues to sing to patrons, and is even interpreted by an oracle until Apollo interceded, as it competes with his oracle at Delphi. Eventually, the muses collect his dismembered body parts and head, and bury them upon the foot of Mount Olympus, where the nightingales sing above his grave. Through the support of Apollo and the Muses, Zeus casts Orpheus’ lyre up into the night sky as a constellation in honor of the poet’s musical powers. Let’s take a moment to review the nine Muses of mount Helicon, those feminine patron deities inspiring the arts and sciences. We’ll begin with Orpheus’ own mother; Calliope-goddess of epic poetry. Clio is the muse of history, while Erato inspires erotic poetry. Euterpe represents music and lyrical poetry, and Melpomene sings tales of tragedy. Polymnia sings religious hymns, while Terpsichore delights in dance. Thalia was patron of festive comedy and Urania was the muse of Astronomy and astrology. Ovid gives us the optimistic reuniting of the lovers in the underworld: “Meanwhile the fleeting shade of Orpheus had descended under earth: remembering now those regions that he saw when there before, he sought Eurydice through fields frequented by the blest; and when he found her, folded her in eager arms. Then lovingly they wandered side by side, or he would follow when she chose to lead, or at another time he walked in front, looking back, safely,—at Eurydice.” (Tr. By more) Im Finished with the orpheus myth!! Woohoo!!Thanks for looking! I'd really appreciate if you could share this image! Like this art? Barefoot Divinity - an intriguing art historical detail in The Sandman
Tumblr media
I was rewatching The Sandman episode "Calliope" and I noticed an interesting detail: when Calliope is led away from Erasmus Fry's house, she is barefoot.
There's plenty of thematic reasons to do this within the story, as she's an otherworldly being who would not be harmed by going barefoot, and because she is, at this point, a prisoner. One could argue that the reason for this choice is simply because she has not been allowed the dignity of shoes and it is an effective way of controlling peoples' movements to deny them shoes.
But to put on my ancient art history TA hat for a moment here, there's another possible reason for the choice to show Calliope barefoot.
What makes it such an interesting detail in particular is that showing Calliope barefoot is accurate to ancient Greek and Roman art: only the gods are depicted barefoot.
In fact, it's such a consistent rule that it's often a quick way when looking at ancient Greco-Roman sculptures (of certain eras) to know whether or not the figure the statue depicts is meant to be a god or a mortal. If the figure depicted is otherwise fully dressed (ie, it's not a bathing scene or some other deliberately nude subject matter) but they still have no shoes, that means they are a god.
This rule was so strict when it came to portraiture in particular that it took on political significance in the Julio-Claudian era of Ancient Rome. Romans were constantly suspicious of their early emperors like Augustus aspiring to become god-kings in the style of their (barbaric, to Roman minds) eastern counterparts, as Romans considered the allure of being declared divine to be understandable but anathema to their own comfortable fiction that the Emperor was a Princeps, first citizen, and not a king. So when this statue was commissioned by Emperor Augustus's widow, Livia:
Tumblr media
It was incredibly politically controversial because she was saying, in essence, that Emperor Augustus was a god.
Now, this particular statue barely squeaked by the censors, so to speak, because the Romans believed everyone had a "genius" or divine spark within them. The claim was that this wasn't a statue of Augustus declaring him a deity but rather a statue depicting his divine spark which could be portrayed as a barefoot god, now that he was dead.
Still, it was a statue viewed with a great deal of suspicion at the time as a result of this splitting of hairs. Next time you go through the Greco-Roman statue portion of a museum that contains full body statues, check out which ones are barefoot! Oftentimes, there is a political message mixed in to that effect. For example, with otherwise naked generals (in a style referred to as "heroic nudity", often used for mythological heroes or athletes) being shown still wearing sandals, to signal they are still modest enough to be depicted as humans, not gods.
The thing is, Calliope is not the only time in The Sandman comics that a godlike being is depicted as barefoot at an otherwise unusual time, specifically in a Greco-Roman context. For example,
Tumblr media
After this event in Brief Lives, Dream is shown leaving the temple walking barefoot on the ground. Dream is also named as the Roman god Morpheus, who the Romans would therefore have no issue with being portrayed barefoot.
And much more interestingly, he is throughout the Brief Lives arc frequently and unusually shown barefoot even when wearing modern clothes:
Tumblr media
It is this frequent portrayal of Morpheus without shoes on that leads me to believe the choice is deliberate on @neil-gaiman's part, not merely as a depiction of vulnerability but rather as a nod to ancient art history visual language, as is so frequently done throughout The Sandman comics and his other works: modernizing the ancient and bringing the mythological into our world.

What is a “Universal Offering/Devotional Act?”
Feel free to request or suggest deities! This list will be done in order but you can ask for me to complete one that’s further down the list.
This list is subject to change. There are probably repeat deities (deities who go by multiple names, parts of groups like the Horae or Charities who are mostly grouped together, etc.) on this list. Some deities are not on here. Some names are spelt wrong or different.

Hey there! I hope you’re having a good day. I just saw a post you made about Dream’s type romantically. Thoughts on Calliope and Dream’s relationship specifically? It always stands out to me how though Dream has had a number of lovers throughout the millennia, Calliope is the only one he married. (And of course, Melissanthi Mahut and Tom Sturridge’s blistering chemistry in the show is an additional component for me xD but feel free to respond only based on the comics if you wish!)
Hey, always happy to see your asks in my inbox!
So, first of all; I don’t care what everyone else thinks:
Dream and Calliope are the OTP even though I’m not a shipper. There, I said it, hit me over the head with a hammer, I live well in that tiny little corner of fandom 🤣
Conceptually, they are very, very alike. There is definitely something in there about dreams marrying epic poetry (and eloquence!) that’s just so on the nose.
But I also can’t help thinking: Slight power imbalance maybe, and we also get this more directly via the “all gods get born and die in the Dreaming.” I think often about how this would have played out for them once Calliope’s last worshippers have died—it’s certainly a tough one, even if their relationship hadn’t soured.
But even so: She is the Muse of Epic Poetry, he is the Prince of Stories, so there is A LOT of overlap between what they stand for. And hence, a lot of mutual understanding. They always struck me as *getting* each other (probably why they fell in love in the first place)—until they didn’t. The fact they didn’t live together was good for them I think, because thoughts need to be allowed freedom to form and develop. Plus, there’s also a lot to be said for Calliope keeping her independence that way. Not just in terms of personhood, but again if you think of how she was essentially created in, and will return to, the Dreaming. It’s probably wise for her (in conceptual terms) not to hang out there ALL the time?
She seems a lot more grounded in the mortal world than Dream is though. I always thought that was down to the fact that humans know her, as in actively worship her/ask her for inspiration, which must make her much closer in a way? Because bar a few, no one really *knows* Dream exists, although everyone does, if that makes any sense? Mortals know him on a subconscious level (that’s why he’s forever nebulous and *lonely*), but people know Calliope as a deity and seek connection explicitly. I’m not sure what I’m trying to say here, but to me, that was always a reason why, although a goddess, she seemed far less removed from the mortal plight than Dream was (at least when they were still an item—we all know he changed, even if he didn’t admit it [well, he did in the end to Nuala, which is a whole ‘nother topic]).
And when I think about why they didn’t work out, I can only think: “Orpheus”.
I mean yes, she said that they were already starting to drift apart slightly before she was with child, but there was still a lot of love between them even so. I think the death knell was to have a child on these wonky foundations. Why they did, we’ll never know.
Conceptually, there’s again something very deep and painful about dreams and poetry becoming something real. And then, that mortal child becoming immortal (until his father finally intervenes). But Orpheus was still all mortal and human to his core, even when he became immortal for a while, and that was *always* at the base of their rift. But I digress…
Back to why was Orpheus the death of their marriage? Dream’s advice to Orpheus was sound, yet it was unfeeling and lacked empathy. Calliope’s was maybe (?) not as reasonable, but she understood her child because a mother’s love is (usually) unconditional. We all know Dream’s wasn’t for a long time although it should have been.
I think if they’d all sat together as a family, supported their son in his grief in a balanced way, this whole catastrophe could have been avoided (I mean no, not really—it’s a tragedy, “doomed by the narrative” and all that). But all of Dream’s relationships (be that to his son or his lovers) fail because he is unreality (hence he has a hard time when things quite literally get real), and despite *knowing* mortals on a very deep level, I don’t believe he truly *understood* them at this point. But I think Calliope did—maybe due to who she was, maybe just because she actually *allowed* them in? Because Dream never truly did that. And when he finally did and truly understood what unconditional love actually means, he came apart at the seams and unravelled.
There’s also something really interesting conceptually in thinking of the Prince of Stories who doesn’t believe he has his own, and the Muse of Epic Poetry who inspires. Who is trying to control whom in this scenario? It’s mirrored in how they behave when the whole Orpheus tragedy takes off:
Calliope tries to inspire and, dare I say try to control the narrative a bit, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, quite the opposite: She looks for the most favourable outcome for everyone involved, even if it means bending the rules: She tries to convince Dream to put in a good word with Hades and believes he would listen because Gods respect him and, dare I say it, are even a bit scared of him.
Dream is rigid. Which is so mind-bending for someone who is the personification of hopes, wishes and possibility. But he is an immovable object: If he’s right, he’s right. That’s the rules, that’s it. And he won’t bend them, not even for his son. I’m not saying that it’s not understandable from his point of view, because he might know things we don’t (potentially also that although he *could* bend the rules because he has the power to do so, it might have knock-on effects no one else can understand or see—it’s impossible to say), only that they are fundamentally different in their approach although they are *both* about inspiration. And inspiration is so closely related to bringing on change (ouch!).
Part of me wants to say that Calliope uses it to control the narrative while Dream doesn’t, that Calliope believes that we can change our destiny while Dream doesn’t, but that’s also too simple. Because Dream *can* be controlling, but in totally different ways and areas.
I feel like I’m rambling out a lot of unordered thoughts, but I guess what I’m trying to say is that Dream and Calliope were so close because they are so similar in so many ways bar one:
Their understanding how inspiration can be used to bring on change. I would somehow go as far as saying that Calliope understands what it means to have personhood, also for herself, and that’s why she understands it in others (I think this is made *very* clear when Richard Madoc holds her hostage). Dream doesn’t—least not at the point where it would have mattered with regards to their relationship, because I think the fishbowl has changed him in that regard. This is also why he wants to make things right with her I believe. But of course he would never openly admit it (he basically stops himself before blurting it out), simply because it would also mean he’d need to admit it to himself…
With regard to that meta:
I definitely think they were highly romantically attracted, purely down to who/what they are. I can’t say too much about their sexual attraction, but after Calliope’s speech at his wake, it would be somewhat unlikely to assume they weren’t 🙈🤣
Was it unconditional though? No.
Was it pragmatic (that sounds so bad and unfeeling, but it’s not a bad thing, because a certain level of pragmatism is what grounds love in reality and makes it last)? I think they tried. But ultimately, he can never live that way because he is unreality, and I often wonder if they both knew 😭

some family portrait redraws of Cashmere and their family throughout the years! I may try redrawing it again at some point in the future (not any time soon, some design changes will be made if I do) it’s just fun seeing what all has changed throughout the years!
the first family portrait was from around march 2021 when I didn’t have much figured out about Cashmere’s family (they didn’t have siblings, their parents didn’t have design or names just those silhouettes), the second portrait set is from may 2021 around when I was designing the family for the first time, third portrait set is from later that year in september and when I was working on their designs again, and the last redraw was from september 2022! Like I said I may redraw it again at some point, aside from making small changes to their designs I also want to like make the posing and shit make more sense and look better!

The Courage we Need to be Joyful...
------------------------------------------
A/N: After much discussion with @astrandofgold, repeated listening of the soundtrack and one let's play later: I'm fucking obsessed with Stray Gods. The story is engaging, and the songs are beautiful and powerful. So of course your girl here had to try her hand at writing something for it! This is a sweet fluffy love confession Apollo x gn!reader.
( I based reader on the Greek deity Circe, known for their vast knowledge of potions and herbs. Reader is mentioned to have the eidolon of that idol)
Warning: contains mild spoilers for the game and the ending!
Enjoy! ❤️
Tumblr media
You smile contentedly to yourself as you gently stir the cauldron that's simmering merrily in the fireplace. Your kitchen smells like lavender and fresh herbs, sunlight filtering in through the voile curtains that covered the window. The sound of bickering voices outside your apartment in the Olympus block catches your attention. There's a moment of silence before someone knocks loudly at the door.
You stir the latest concoction once more before making your way over to the front door, it was Grace. The newest last muse who had been given Calliope's eidolon, opened up the secrets on her death and generally turned the lives of the idols upside down. (About time really.) Then standing almost shyly behind her was Apollo, the idol of prophecy and enlightenment himself. You smile warmly at them both, trying hard not to let your eyes wander over the open shirted sun god in front of you.
"Grace, Apollo, what can I do for you both?"
Grace playfully elbows Apollo with a mischievous smirk.
"This guy here has something he'd like to talk to you about."
Your stomach flips nervously but you don't let it show on your face.
"Sure, come on in. Make yourself at home."
You move to the side as the muse ushers him in the door, Apollo looking like a deer in the headlights.
"Well, I'm going to let you two crazy kids get to it. I'll see you later." Grace shoots Apollo a meaningful look before leaving quickly. Something was definitely going on here.
"Do you mind coming through to the kitchen for a moment? I have a new mixture brewing and I'd rather not have it burnt to the bottom of the cauldron."
The small laugh he gives is like music to your ears as he follows you through the small apartment.
Apollo sets himself down at your small round kitchen table as you lift the mini cauldron off of the fire and onto a pot stand on the side.
"What is it?" He asks as you add a little pinch more of powdered satyr hoof from the clay pots that lined your countertop.
"A simple sleeping draft...for Athena. After everything she's finding it hard to find rest so..."
"Ah", was all he said. Not needing any more explanation. Admittedly he was surprised you were still helping her after everything, but he also knew you had a weakness for helping those in need. It was part of your nature to help no matter what.
You sit down at the other side of the table, wishing you had something to do with your hands instead of nervously fidgeting with the hem of your sleeves.
"What was it you wanted to speak to me about? Is everything okay?" You glance up to see him quickly looking away with what appears to be an ever so slight blush on his cheeks.
"Much better now that the trial is over with and...and I know Calliope is at peace."
"I wish you could have told me about the prophecy, Athena, the Furies...any of it really." You reach out to place your hand over his larger one, a sad smile is playing on his lips. "I would have helped you in any way I could, I hope you know that."
He looks up at you with the same sad smile, turning his hand over to entwine your fingers. His hand feels strong and warm in yours. It feels almost natural.
"I couldn't. It wasn't safe. For all I knew I would have been cursing you to the same fate as Calliope. And I can't...I can't bear the thought of any harm coming to you". He sighs, running his other hand through his hair. You don't say anything, hoping it might prompt him to continue.
"We've known each other a long time. A long long time. I still remember the way your face lit up and you said my name when Circe's memories finally returned to you. They picked well with you for what it's worth."
You squeezed his hand gratefully, smiling shyly at him.
"It was the first real solid memory that had returned to me after almost two years. Before that I had only had little snatches of dejavu. But you...you I saw clear as day in my minds eye, and it felt like no time had passed since we last spoke all those years ago."
Apollo leans closer, now clasping your hand in both of his. Your heart beat races as you look deep into his eyes and see nothing but sincerity gazing back at you.
"This is...difficult to say and I guess I'm sorry I never realised it sooner. I've spent so long in the dark of my own mind, scared of hurting anyone with my prophecies, tired of losing the people I care about. Beyond terrified to let anyone in and then Grace, she..."
Oh. Grace. Of course. The beautiful last muse he'd helped to save. Of course it was her, she was talented and compassionate, it was bound to happen. Of course he'd fallen for her.
"She helped me to realise that the courage I need to be joyful was, well, inside me all along."
You're nodding along, a smile forced on your lips as you try to listen to this painful confession without flinching.
"I just have to reach out and take that chance".
"I'm happy for you a-"
"-I'm in love with you."
You freeze in place, mind completely blank and reeling from the confession. Could it be?
"I uh...y-you love me? You, Apollo, you...amazing, handsome, kind you...you love me?"
He stays quiet but squeezes your hand reassuringly. You're thankful he was giving you this time to process his words.
"Are you sure?" You ask quietly eventually, eyes cast down, still hardly believing what you'd just heard. He chuckles quietly before gently cupping your chin with one hand and tilts your face back up to look at him.
Apollo then leans over the small table, eyes flicking down to your lips briefly, lightly guiding you closer to him by his cupped hand. His lips touch yours ever so softly, a thousand butterflies exploding in your stomach at once as you kiss him back tentatively.
"I love you too," you whisper after a moment of silence. He smiles at you, bright and warm like the sun before letting go of you to pull you to your feet and into a tight embrace.
"I'm sorry I took so long to say it, but luckily for me I've got till the end of time to make up for it. If you'll let me?"
You pull him down into another kiss by his unbuttoned shirt, already craving the taste of his lips and the feel of his body close to yours.
"I think I can live with that."
