Atalanta #4 (Atalanta Outwrestles Peleus)
At the funeral games for King Pelius, Atalanta wrestles the Argonaut, Peleus, winning the match through strength and technique.
Looking to Homer and the Iliad and the funeral games for Patroclus, we can get a overview of the ancient greek funeral games. The body of the fallen was placed upon a funeral pyre, offerings or sacrifices are made, and the pyre burnes. In the funeral games was an opportunity for Greek men to compete and show their Arete, or excellence, in a given skill. Events like; Chariot races, boxing, wrestling, running, sword fighting, shotputting, archery, and javelin throwing. The winners of the contests could hope to be awarded the glorious olive wreath crown; or other precious objects like tripods or horses. In fact these funerary competitive games are seen as the ancient roots of the Olympic games. Although it was Hercules who created the first Olympic games to honor his father, Zeus.
Let’s take a look at Atalanta’s wrestling partner; Peleus, who plays an important role in Greek myth. As one of the heroes of the Argonautica, he later becomes a king of Phthia (in Thessaly) and is most famous for his marriage to the sea nymph Thetis. Zeus learned the prophecy that through his coupling with Thetis, her offspring would overthrow the Olympians, so he gave Thetis to a mortal; King Peleus. Chiron the centaur gave King Peleus the tip that he should ambush and hold tight to Thetis, as she transformed between forms. After succeeding to capture her, she agrees to marry, and the gods attend the wedding ceremony. This is the banquet where Eris, goddess of discord, sneaks in the golden apple inscribed with “for the farest,” setting off an argument between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. When Paris, prince of troy is Aphrodite promising Helen to Paris, setting off the Trojan war.

This is the face you make when they call you /daɪˈæn.ə/ instead of /ˈdja.na/ A quick cosplay and a bit of Photoshop. I've seen someone still performing this challenge on the web. Crescent Moon by Eithnne   Swamp and far background by Drake-Stock  Trees and vegetation by zememz   Cloud and sky by beckas   Model and edit: me Diana is a goddess in Roman and Hellenistic religion, primarily considered a patroness of the countryside, hunters, crossroads, and the Moon. She is equated with the Greek goddess Artemis, and absorbed much of Artemis' mythology early in Roman history, including a birth on the island of Delos to parents Jupiter and Latona, and a twin brother, Apollo, though she had an independent origin in Italy. Here she is Diana Nemorensis ("Diana of Nemi"), also known as "Diana of the Wood", and she was an Italic form of the goddess who became Hellenised during the fourth century BC and conflated with Artemis. Her sanctuary was to be found on the northern shore of Lake Nemi beneath the cliffs of the modern city Nemi (in Latin "nemus Aricinum"). This lake is referred to by poets as "speculum Dianae" – "Diana's Mirror"; by the town of Aricia which was situated about three miles off, at the foot of the Albanus Mons, the Alban Mount, and separated by a steep descent from the lake, which lies in a small crater-like hollow on the mountainside. Diana was often considered an aspect of a triple goddess, known as Diana triformis: Diana, Luna, and Hecate. According to historian C.M. Green, "these were neither different goddesses nor an amalgamation of different goddesses. They were Diana…Diana as huntress, Diana as the moon, Diana of the underworld." At her sacred grove on the shores of Lake Nemi, Diana was venerated as a triple goddess beginning in the late 6th century BCE. Andreas Alföldi interpreted an image on a late Republican coin as the Latin Diana "conceived as a threefold unity of the divine huntress, the Moon goddess and the goddess of the nether world, Hekate". This coin, minted by P. Accoleius Lariscolus in 43 BCE, has been acknowledged as representing an archaic statue of Diana Nemorensis. It represents Artemis with the bow at one extremity, Luna-Selene with flowers at the other and a central deity not immediately identifiable, all united by a horizontal bar. The iconographical analysis allows the dating of this image to the 6th century at which time there are Etruscan models. The coin shows that the triple goddess cult image still stood in the lucus of Nemi in 43 BCE. Lake Nemi was called Triviae lacus by Virgil (Aeneid 7.516), while Horace called Diana montium custos nemoremque virgo ("keeper of the mountains and virgin of Nemi") and diva triformis ("three-form goddess"). Two heads found in the sanctuary and the Roman theatre at Nemi, which have a hollow on their back, lend support to this interpretation of an archaic triple Diana.

Dark academia, but make it sapphic 🕯🍂 Mysterious boarding schools, with a dark past with ghosts and gay witches. Do you need more? No, no you don’t. The aesthetic and atmosphere in this book is *chef’s kiss* Already planning on rereading this during autumn 🍂🍁

Do you have something as a “night book”? Beloved is a night book for me. At night, all distractions turned off and everyone already in bed, was the only time I could concentrate on the rich writing and complicated timeline of this remarkable novel. It’s not for casual reading. At least the beginning wasn’t. It took me good few days to get through the first 50 pages, I had to consult SparkNotes to make sense of what was going on, but, boy oh boy, was it worth it! Page 70 and Beloved became my all-day book, I can’t stop myself from thinking about it all the time and being completely enamoured. Sometimes I read so fast that I absorb the story, but not the writing, so I go back and reread certain sections to get the full effect of this book. It’s just incredible, I can’t wait to read more tonight. Have you read Beloved? What did you think? 🤍 #beloved #tonimorrison #tonimorrisonbeloved #classics #classicliterature #classiclit #modernclassic #books #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #literature #classicscommunity #classicscommunity2021 #englishmajor #requiredreading https://www.instagram.com/p/CPGT5omLL8h/?utm_medium=tumblr

Books Read in 2020
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
9.2/10
This was a reread. This time I listened to the new full cast version on Audible. It was absolutely delightful.
I feel I relate most to Meg or Beth and Jo is of course amazing but Amy truly is my favorite. I love her and her story.
This 150 year old book is still so incredibly relevant.
Now to go watch the new adaptation that I've only heard good things about!

“I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves.”⠀ ⠀ 🌻 ¡Hola, Hola! Do you read biographies? Yesterday I asked you about the women you admired, today I want to tell you about two of mine. Mary Shelly and Mary Wollstonecraft. The first wrote Frankestein, the second Vindication of the rights of women and is considered the first modern feminist, and they are family.⠀ Years ago I read a great biography. The chapters are interspersed, beginning with Wollstonecraft's childhood, then Shelly's,⠀ Unfortunately even though Wollstonecraft is Shelly's mother,⠀ They did not get to know each other, Wollstonecraft died in childbirth, but Shelly was influenced by her mother's articles. And what an interesting life they both had, they both revolutionized the world."⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #bookstagrammer #bookaesthetic #bookphotography #mybookfeatures #creativebookstagram #classicscommunity #cozybooktime #bookobsessed #readersgonnaread #maryshelley #maryWollstonecraft #CharlotteGordon #bookcommunity #alwaysreading #bookaesthetic #classics #classiccollection #beautifulbooks #bookstagram #Frankenstein #historicalfiction⠀ ⠀ (en England) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMR5iWrgwh3/?igshid=1g3mdu4485s6k

The only good thing to come out of 2020 is the amount of reading I’m getting done. 📖 FOR INSTANCE, I’ve been making more space to read poetry. Currently, I’ve been been waking up and reading one or two of Plath’s poems a day. So I’m reading her complete poems from cover to cover instead of just a few here and there when the mood strikes me. I feel I’m getting a more intimate understanding of this writer I admire. The real test will be if I can keep this habit up when the school year starts up again🌟 : QOTD: Do you read a lot of poetry? If so, who? : #classicscommunity #academiaaesthetic #academia #darkacademia #classicliterature #literary #literarycommunity #bookstagram #lightacademia #readersofinstagram #writersofinstagram #englishteachersofinstagram #sylviaplath #poetry #poetrycommunity #qotd #🥀 https://www.instagram.com/p/CEU7BdhBmcq/?igshid=1i09er6z68wfe

News is depressing to read these days. I thought I might give up reading it and read more books instead. Also, this cover of Little Men is too cute. I can’t stop staring at it.

What’s the book that has been on your shelves for the longest ? Two book that has been sitting on my shelves is « Writers and Lovers » and « The Goldfinch ». I’ve heard so many great things about the first one and after reading TSH, The Goldfinch just sounds like a perfect read to go back to that mesmerizing atmosphere of Donna Tart books!
