Today we’re thinking of the brilliant Toni Morrison, on what would have been her 93rd birthday.
In 1993, she became the first Black woman in history to win the Nobel Prize in Literature — in addition to her other accolades, including the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
Toni Morrison is renowned for centering the beauty of being Black in her written work, especially from the perspective of Black women and girls.  We honor her today and every day!

💡 Here’s an interesting bit of literary trivia for you:
After Song of Solomon author Toni Morrison‘s house burned down, she spent hours on the phone with fellow author Maxine Hong Kingston trying to process the loss. Kingston also lost one of her homes to a fire.

Book: Beloved By Toni Morrison Film: Beloved (1998) Beloved is a 1987 novel by the American writer Toni Morrison. Set after the American Civil War, it tells the story of a family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Beloved is inspired by an event that actually happened: Margaret Garner, an enslaved person in Kentucky, who escaped and fled to the free state of Ohio in 1856. She was subject to capture in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850; when U.S. marshals burst into the cabin where Garner and her husband had barricaded themselves, she was attempting to kill her children, and had already killed her two-year-old daughter, to spare them from being returned to slavery. Morrison had come across an account of Garner titled "A Visit to the Slave Mother who Killed Her Child" in an 1856 newspaper article published in the American Baptist, and reproduced in The Black Book, a miscellaneous compilation of black history and culture that Morrison edited in 1974. Beloved is a 1998 American psychological horror drama film directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandiwe Newton. Based on Toni Morrison's 1987 novel of the same name, the plot centers on a former slave after the American Civil War, her haunting by a poltergeist, and the visitation of her reincarnated daughter. Despite being a box office bomb Beloved received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood, the film received mostly positive reviews, and both Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise received praise for their performances. Booklust is my unconditional love.
I’ve been incubating at home nursing this infection. I’ve slept most of the day and for an active person it feels good but weird lol. I’m dressed and the sun is shining. My mood needs sunshine. I think back to my childhood and the anticipation I felt when thinking of genres and books to read. Buying books, living out days in libraries. The lure of reading enriched the life I had. I was in awe…

💫#ArtIsAWeapon @op #WomensHistoryMonth The United States Postal Service @uspostalservice honored #ToniMorrison, the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature @nobelprize_org, with a #Foreverstamp. The brilliant writer, editor and scholar - who transitioned in 2019 - is revered for her ability to examine #BlackAmerican identity through sharp, spellbinding prose—often focusing on the experiences of #Blackwomen. “One of the goals of our stamp program is to raise awareness and celebrate the people who represent the very best of our nation,” says Pritha Mehra, chief information officer and executive vice president of the Postal Service, in a statement. “... We honor Toni Morrison with one more tribute—our new stamp that will be seen by millions and forever remind us of the power of her words and the ideas she brought to the world.” The new stamp features a portrait of Morrison that photographer Deborah Feingold took during a 1997 cover shoot for Time magazine @time. The design was unveiled March 7 at a ceremony at Princeton University, where Morrison taught for more than 15 years, and which is currently staging a months-long series of exhibitions and programs dedicated to the author’s life and literary achievements. The ceremony featured a letter from former President Barack Obama @barackobama and former first lady Michelle Obama @michelleobama, which was read aloud, as well as a video tribute from Oprah Winfrey @oprah. “Toni told fundamental truths about our country and the human condition,” the Obamas wrote, “but she didn’t just reflect what was true. She helped generations of Black Americans reimagine what was possible.” In 2012, Obama presented Morrison with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “Toni Morrison’s books are in so many of our homes and abide in our hearts because she served as a catalyst for generations of readers over the years to understand the power of reading and words,” said Winfrey in her video. The media mogul’s book club has highlighted four of Morrison’s books—more than any other author. Winfrey also starred in and helped create the 1998 film adaptation of Beloved. • Source: www.smithsonianmag.com https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0GJwtOe8h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today In History ‘Beloved,“ a novel by Toni Morrison about the agonizing remembrances of a former slave in post-Civil War Ohio, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction on this day March 31, 1988. Ms. Morrison’s work had been at the center of a controversy the previous year when it failed to win the prestigious National Book Award, and 48 black writers wrote an open letter in January of 1987-protesting that Ms. Morrison had never won that award or a Pulitzer. On March 29, 2023 a Virginia superintendent informed parents 14 books will be removed from school libraries this week due to sexual content. Spotsylvania County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Taylor cited Virginia law signed by Gov. Glenn Youngkin last year that requires parents be notified about sexually explicit material. The 14 books, including Pulitzer Prize-winning “Beloved” by Toni Morrison, are among several dozen books challenged as instructional material by parent Jennifer Petersen who has appeared before the school board to express her concerns.
