Disenfranchising voters who have been incarcerated is a long standing voter suppression tactic — but with the bill Nebraska lawmakers passed last week, THOUSANDS of Nebraskans are one step closer to having their voting rights more easily restored. 🙌🏽
Currently, someone convicted of a felony in Nebraska must wait two years after completing their prison, parole, and probation sentences before regaining their right to vote. This bill eliminates that waiting period, allowing Nebraskans to automatically get their voting power back as soon as they return to their communities.
In order for this bill to officially become law, Governor Jim Pellen must sign it.
As of October 2023, 26 states and Washington D.C. have expanded voting rights to people with felony convictions. As a result, more than TWO MILLION people across the country have had their right to vote restored. Every voice matters in our democracy. 🗳️✅

Happy Jackie Robinson Day! ⚾🙌🏿
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first Black player in Major League Baseball’s modern era, ending more than 50 years of segregation in the league.
He went on to become one of the most iconic baseball players in history.

When farmers Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez sent their children to a local California school in 1945, school officials said they had to go to a separate facility reserved for Mexican American students. Angered by this discrimination, the Mendez family recruited other immigrant parents for a federal court case challenging the school segregation.
On this day 77 years ago, a Circuit Court made a final ruling in their favor — stating segregated education denied the Mexican American students their equal protection rights under the 14th Amendment.
The Mendez v. Westminster decision paved the way for the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954, and is a clear example of Mexican Americans fighting for their rights — and winning. 🙌🏽

One year ago today, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl went to pick up his twin brothers from a friend’s house in Kansas City. After Ralph accidentally rang the wrong doorbell, the homeowner shot him twice before even starting a conversation.
Ralph miraculously survived this horrific incident — and after recovering, he earned a top spot in Missouri’s all-state band this year.
Black boys deserve to make harmless mistakes without fearing for their lives. We are SO proud of you, Ralph! 🪈🎷🎉

Three years ago today, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed by a Minnesota officer during a traffic stop.
The Police Chief later said the officer meant to fire her taser, not her gun. She was found guilty of manslaughter eight months later and sentenced to two years in prison. The city agreed to pay a $3.25 million settlement to Daunte’s family in June 2022.
None of this makes up for Daunte no longer being here with his family. He deserved to grow old, and to raise his son. Daunte’s life mattered.

A near total abortion ban will go into effect soon in Arizona after the state Supreme Court ruled they must follow a restrictive abortion law from the 1860’s. Previously, Arizona doctors were allowed to provide abortions up to 15 weeks into pregnancy. There are no exceptions for rape or incest and it makes performing an abortion punishable by two to five years in prison.
But voters could be the ultimate decision makers on abortion access in Arizona this year. More than 500,000 Arizonans have signed a petition to put a state constitutional right to abortion on the ballot this November. They need 383,923 signatures from registered Arizona voters by July 3rd to qualify, and the group leading the effort hopes to gather at least twice as many to guarantee enough signatures are valid.
Arizona will not be able to enforce the decision for 14 days, so abortions are still available in the state until then.
Reminder: abortion access has been undefeated at the ballot box since Roe v. Wade was overturned. Your vote is your voice. Make sure you’re registered right now, visit weall.vote/register.
