Our story begins with our mothers'- for when she is conceived, one half of us is already present in her. Metaphorically, yes? But let's come down to the bare bones. A girl is born with all the eggs she will ever have- we are a part of our mothers long before we become an idea, a desire, a wish. I've avoided picking this book for the longest time; I am known to cry copiously, especially at emotionally charged words. And an ode to a dead mother who ends her life at 51 years was certainly going to have me weep buckets. It didn't. Handke writes about his mother seven weeks after her death-in parts to make sense of this loss & to capture the entirety of 'her'. So he begins- she as a child, as a young woman learning the vocabulary of this world, a wife, a mother, an essential but ignored limb of the society, a matron who finds herself (better late than never) to only realise just how late that is & then… I didn't know there were controversies around Handke. This work, though, is just a testimony to love felt and experienced. This pithy German book, mere 78 pages, is held down by the beauty of the prose. Grief has words and more than wrenching your heart out- they wipe the muck off our vision. If sadness were words- A Sorrow Beyond Dreams would be those. And what it really says is… It's already too late, it's already too less. Hello everyone and TGIF! On this wet, wild and blustery evening in my part of the UK 🇬🇧 it really feels like Autumn is here and announcing itself in full and proud voice! 🤣 Here’s three paperbacks I picked up recently. The Icepick Surgeon is nonfiction from the author of books including The Disappearing Spoon, The Violinists Thumb and one of my favourites - The Tale Of The Duelling Neurosurgeons. Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process. Next up, Indigenous Species from one of my favourite presses @tiltedaxisbooks I’m slowly collecting all the books I’m translation that they’ve published. The author addresses issues of pollution, consumerism and habitat destruction with a poets sensibility and her frenetic neon artwork. This is also a bold and necessary experiment in making a sight impaired accessible art book. Finally, I bought Astray in my quest to own everything Emma Donoghue has ever written 😍 With the turn of each page, the characters that roam across these pages go astray. They are emigrants, runaways, drifters, gold miners, counterfeiters, attorneys and slaves. They cross borders of races, love, sex and sanity. They travel for love or money, under duress or incognito. A sequence of fourteen fact inspired fictions about travels to, in and from North America, Astray offers a past in scattered pieces, a surprising and moving history for restless times. Benjamin Labatut autor chileno, nacido en Holanda, define su libro así: “Contiene un ensayo que no es ensayo, dos textos que tiene la forma de cuentos, una novela corta, y algo parecido a una crónica autobiográfica”. Ya he leído una parte y me tiene inmersa, pero debo estudiar 🥹 Si quieren saber algo más, sólo mencionaré lo que dice internet; que trata básicamente sobre la particular vida de científicos, donde se ven atormentados por descubrimientos propios o por las mismas exigencias de su actividad. I really, really, really enjoyed A Side of Murder the first book in @amypershingauthor Cape Cod foodie series and although I promised myself I wasn't going to buy anymore books after that huge book haul last week but I am just lying to myself. Samantha Barnes is a chef in NYC who finds herself back home in Cape Cod after losing her and her marriage. Her Great Aunt Ida died and left her home and dog well puppy Diogi to Sam to her surprise. Sam's intent is to go see what needs to be done to get her aunt's house in saleable state and head back to New York but when her friend Krista ask her to review a new restaurant she accepts mostly because she needs the money and because Krista doesn't accept no. Of course there's a murder that brings her back into contact with her crush Jason Captiva who is now the Harbor master and who keeps telling her to leave the investigation to him and the police which she is not going to do. I couldn't put this book down! I loved Samantha and her friends. The plot was well paced and hats off to the author for not giving too many red herrings. As a girlie girl myself I appreciated Samantha's very feminine style of long flowy dresses made me think of the brands Selkie, Ivy City Co, & Jessakae although I am no wear near Samantha's 6'2 frame.
