If I had a nickel for every time Steven Moffat gave a historically aroace male character from a legacy property a female love interest because he believes that, quote, "There would be no tension in [an aroace lead], no fun in that," despite the fact that even when he writes them those romances are the least interesting parts of the character, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

Thanks for your reply. And, yeah, I definitely agree that Robin is first and foremost Dick’s legacy, and that he chose Damian as his Robin for important reasons that he expresses to Tim later. And, his blessings to both Jason and Tim previously were also extremely important. But, I was thinking about it more in terms of how the transition was handled. I know that Jason and Dick, despite popular belief, had a decent relationship when he was Robin, but Dick didn’t react well initially because he had been completely blindsided by the news, nor had he given his consent. I thought that Alfred was sort of repeating Bruce’s mistakes here, so Tim might have been blindsided by it as well (not that I think he would’ve given his consent either way at that point). You saying that it was a crisis decision on Alfred’s part puts it in perspective though, and it makes sense since Alfred’s generally more sensitive than Bruce. I do think, though, that seeing Damian in a Robin suit (with Alfred’s blessing) would have probably made Tim realise that there was a real possibility that Damian could be Robin.
[referencing this response on how the transition from Tim to Damian as Robin was handled]
I think two things can be true: Tim would be blindsided and hurt by Dick's decision to make Damian Robin regardless of the circumstances, but it was particularly tough for him given the situation that it occurred in (the issue you're talking about and I mostly discussed in my original response), and it was the obvious decision to make based on where all three of those characters were in their character arcs.
Tim during the BFTC/early Reborn era honestly needs to be viewed in the context of him clearly being ready to take the same steps Dick took at his age to become an independent vigilante but wanting to cling to Robin because it was the only sense of stability he had in an incredibly unstable period of his life. Tim had been operating semi-independently for years and had just spent the entirety of Battle for the Cowl telling Dick that if he wouldn't put on the cowl Tim would do it himself…and then he actually did put on the cowl to go fight Jason. It's not like Tim wasn't signaling that he had moved beyond Robin's role as Batman's non-independent protege.
And Dick could see that, especially since Tim had already been the Robin to his Batman once, back in Prodigal. He genuinely meant it when he called Tim his "equal" in Red Robin #1, and I think that's important to understand where both of them are coming from.
Ultimately Tim's problems with Robin "being taken away from him" were not Dick's problems, and Tim's hostility and hurt comes from a fundamentally different place than Dick's did. Dick voluntarily gave up being Robin to become Nightwing, and the rocky transition from Dick to Jason was less about the mantle and more about Dick's personal insecurity about his place in the family and Bruce giving Jason Robin without his permission. Tim's place in the family was very solid during BftC and his RR #1 freakout was mostly about the perception that Dick was taking away his sole source of mental/life stability and choosing Damian (a potential hostile) over Tim to watch his back and keep him alive.
Dick's issues were about insecurity in the face of a father apparently replacing him with a new son and a new partner in his absence. Tim's issues were about feeling unmoored in the face of yet another loved one dying, his civilian life going up in flames (again) and being pushed out of a tenuous stability back into instability, and the percieved lack of trust in his ability to properly fill the role he was already occupying.
So honestly I think Tim's feelings on that transition need to be viewed as an entirely separate thing from how well or poorly the transition itself was handled, because I genuinely believe that Tim's reaction only was what it canonically was due to the unique intersections of events going on in Tim's personal life. Dick could have (and should have) handled the transition with more delicacy, but Tim was always going to react badly because of how hard he had been leaning on the mask to give him a sense of normalcy and balance. That's not really something Dick or Damian (or Alfred) could control, even though the transition itself was rockier than it could have been on their ends and poorly handled out-of universe.

you know i am absolutely delighted by disciples era au. like, for the liushen potential, obviously, but i also can't stop thinking about a situation where sqq spends all of his free time trying to get evidence on sqh being a traitor, while sqh is frantically wondering wtf he did to piss sqq off so bad, because he certainly didn't write sqq having a huge grudge against the original goods!!
and eventually sqq does get definitive proof of sqh's traitorous behavior, only for sqq to discover that sqh is also a transmigrater. probably through sqh doing a harebrained scheme of trying to buy sqq's silence by offering to tell him his future.
and because sqh is a fellow transmigrator (even if he is annoying), sqq has to do a frantic dash to cover for sqh's misdeeds before sqq outs him even more than he already has. he bitches out sqh the entire time as he does this because he COULD have been reading the new installment of whatever fiction came out of xian shu this entire time but nooooooo, he had to waste all of his time chasing after this stupid author who isn't even a good spy and is APPARENTLY just doing the spy work to get some demon ass!! what kind of plotline is this?? of course it came out of the author who gave him the garbage he's stuck living in.
the funny thing is, this is actually what does convince people that sqh is a traitor. because sqq has been talking about his suspicions regarding sqh to the other future peak lords (chief among them being lqg, who obviously believed sqq immediately and has been his accomplice to this point), the complete 180 sqq does from trying to convince everyone that sqh is a rat, to him -- seemingly out of nowhere -- covering for sqh and spending all this time with him and talking in code (modern slang) with him, when everyone knows that sqq HATES sqh is soooooooooo sus.
in other words, everyone is now convinced that sqh is blackmailing sqq, because sqq actually found something to prove sqh's guilt.
and this results in a frantic quest from his friends (the other future peak lords) to try and find out what sqh is using to blackmail sqq so they can get rid of it. this does not go unnoticed by sqh, who demands that sqq fix the mess he got sqh into, and sqq tells him to fix it himself because he's the one stupid enough to become a spy to get some demon ass (which sqh points out is a gross inaccuracy of the situation, he hasn't gotten one iota of ass, not even a glimpse, do you know how difficult it is to pull that off in demon society which might as well not believe in the existence of clothes).
then system shows up and threatens immense bodily harm to them both if sqh is caught by the sect this early. so what are they supposed to do but begrudgingly work together to save sqh's ass so he can get some demon ass.

Weird Horsegirl Ganondorf fun fact of today is that in Ocarina of Time Ganondorf rides without a bridle! Even in the concept art his horse lacks any bit or reigns (as does Epona, and every other horse).
What it mainly means is that the N64 didn't have the power to mess with an unnecessary complex item to render -- but what it could be interpreted to mean for the sake of fandom fun is that the horses are raised and trained to be ridden bridleless.
Not to be up my own headcanons about horses being a big thing in Gerudo Valley and Malon's mom being Gerudo and there being a reason that Gan's horse is specified as a pure black Gerudo Stallion because other Gerudo horses don't look like that but -- have you seen the dressings on the other horses?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of them, even Zelda's horse, have a call to Gerudo patterning. Except for Epona, who was only able to be approached, touched, and ridden by Link and presumably Malon herself.
It's no secret that the Gerudo are more or less pulled from African and Arabic cultures, but fun fact about Arabian horses, they used to be given as prized gifts to royalty and important political figures.
So if they are inspired by Arabian horse history --
Although the specific area of the Arabian Peninsula where the breed originated can’t be pinpointed, it is widely accepted that around 2500 B.C., the Bedouin people were responsible for developing the desert horses that became the ancestors of the Arabian horse. The nomads’ keen horse sense and meticulous attention to proper care and breeding created an animal that could withstand the harsh environment of the desert, surviving extreme heat and cold with little water and the food they shared with their handlers. A life of travel also required horses with great lung capacity, endurance and stamina. (x)
It's very possible that all of the horses in OoT have ancestry in Gerudo Valley!

Ibara Saegusa - Private Room Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Writer: Nishioka Maiko
Season: Autumn
(Location: CosPro Conference Area)
Ibara: ………
This is probably the best time to contact the other party. Even though the other person is of higher rank, I don’t like humbling myself too much and being criticized.
Now, what’s the next matter I have to work on? Oh? What on Earth is this stack of paper?
…… Ah, is that the photogravure gallery of Eden I took the other day? Hmm…… At first glance it looks like there’s no issues. (1)
Well, I think it’d be better to check in with each person.
His Highness is particularly sensitive about his appearance, especially when it comes to visuals. I’ll check with him to be sure—
Hm? An electronic sound coming from my tablet……?
(Ah. Is it that alarm that sounds when the stock price fluctuates?)
Uum……?
Huh? What on Earth is this……?
(The price of the stock I bought the other day plummeted……?
It’s common for stocks to fluctuate when investing, but I had read that this stock was pretty solid……)
…… Did I read it completely wrong? What a shame…… I ended up paying for an expensive life lesson.
Tumblr media
(Location: Starmony Dorms (Exterior - Night))
Ibara: Fuu…… (Turning his head to relieve his stiffness)
(I’m tired…… No matter how many things I settle and finish, the work just keeps coming one after another. Today was a really busy day.
I found out I double-booked a shoot, was unable to get a hold of the other party, and was told they lost the documents I had gone through great lengths to create.
To top it all off, how on Earth did I only discover this evening that there was an unprocessed matter due today……!
Even though things went well in the morning without any major trouble……
—That’s right. It was around the time the stock price fell. Problems kept occurring in tandem.)
Haah. I’m not lucky at all…… Oh?
Natsume: Hm?
Ibara: Ah, hello. Are you heading out at this hour? Thank you for your hard work.
Natsume: I was just trying to go to the nearby convenience stoRE— More importantly. Fuuun…… HeEH?
Ibara: …… What is it? I’d like you to stop staring at me so intensely.
Natsume: I sense you weren't feeling very ambitious toDAY. What's wrong with your conditiON?
Ibara: Huh……?
Natsume: It feels like you’ve been constantly exposed to the negative energy of a malevolent stAR. You’re down on your luCK. It’s a pretty rare conditiON, Ibara-kun.
Ibara: What? It’s true that there were quite a few incidents today but I didn’t think there were that many.
Well, I suppose today just happened to be that kind of day. Statistically speaking, it’s normal to have bad days even if you’re lucky.
Natsume: That’s riGHT. It’s normal to have good days and bad dAYS. But your situation is differeNT. As I saID, you’ve faltered.
Sometimes it’s no exaggeration to say that there are people possessed by malevolent spirITS. That’s exactly what your condition is nOW.
It’s rare to come across such a caSE. How about it? I’ll tell you your fortUNE.
Honestly, I don’t care about you, but your condition is interesting because of your jOB.
Ibara: No, that’s quite fine. I don’t wish to hear such troublesome talk. I don’t believe in any of that spiritual stuff.
To begin with, if all fortune-telling was correct, then no gambling would take place and no one would fail in their investments.
Tumblr media
Natsume: You don’t understAND. Fortune telling is not predictiON. General fortune telling is based on “observation” and “deductION.”
There are fortune tellers who claim to be 100% accurate, but they’re not fortune tellERS. They’re swindlERS.
Well, think about what I’m about to say as just small tALK. All I'm saying is that you can make the ingredients into whatever dish you want them to BE.
Ibara: Good grief. Well, I’m fine. I’m not interested at all, but I decided that it would be more reasonable to just listen rather than have a debate here.
So could you please hurry up and finish your fortune telling quickly?
Natsume: AlriGHT. I sometimes get asked to read fortunes by people I meet for work, so I usually keep this with ME. It all worked oUT.
Ibara: What did you just pull out? A pendant?
Natsume: No. This is a penduLUM—Hmhmmm…… I see. As expected, the rotation of the stars has worseNED.
Ibara: Even though you were talking to me in an insinuating manner, you were being very casual. What could you possibly understand about me at that level?
Natsume: I’m not trying to get into technical matters here, but taking more time doesn’t necessarily improve accurACY.
That’s right…… Maybe you could turn your luck around by reclaiming something familIAR.
Ibara: What? Even if you say that……
Natsume: Whether or not you believe it is up to you, Ibara-KUN. Like I said, just think of it as small tALK. Well, keep it in the back of your mIND. Then, I’ll be OFF.
Ibara: …… Good grief. I would like you to say what you want to say and not leave immediately……

TL NOTES:
1. A photogravure is an intaglio print process that was sometimes used to produce high-quality reproductions of photographs in ink. Traditionally it involves a copper plate being etched and then coated with light-sensitive gelatin that was exposed to a film positive. Fancy black and white photos. This instance was more than likely the digital version of the technique, which involves the masking and printing of various light values that have been etched, building up its values over time.

i think one of more interesting aspects of ashrah’s and nitara’s relationship is the role of datusha itself. we know ashrah’s hatred of nitara is very misguided but you have to wonder if nitara’s hatred of ashrah is actually towards ashrah or to datusha. the moroi aren’t being attacked again by ashrah, they’re being attacked again by datusha. nitara even acknowledges in her armageddon bio that the sword corrupts the wielder- she doesn’t even refer to ashrah as the vampires’ foe, she calls datusha their foe.

one thing that kinda bothers me about rtd's era is the way he writes regeneration scenes; all 10 said is "i don't wanna go" leading to a lot of hostility towards the next doctor that even lasts until now (looking at tennant/rtd supremacists), and now the bigeneration that led to fourteen never going lol...
whereas moffat always wrote the last speech as a tribute to the previous doctor and a welcome to the next. it's like, it honours the doctor that's going AND leads the audience towards acceptance for the new doctor. "i will always remember when the doctor was me", " we all change and that's okay, that's good, you gotta keep moving", advice for the next doctor like "never be cruel, never be cowardly", "remember, hate is always foolish and love is always wise. always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind", "laugh hard, run fast, be kind", "doctor, i let you go" it was really well done. chibnall was great at that too with his "tag, you're it" almost fun approach (although i also read that that was improvised? but in general the scene was still not too negative anyway). i love the enthusiasm and positivity about it. i hope that when fifteen regenerates, rtd will be easier on the next doctor

[Bleach 129]
I am the kind of person who will latch onto one thing one character said one time and gnaw on it compulsively like it’s some kind of diction dog toy. These panels are fairly innocuous, relative to what comes immediately before and after them (that is, Matsumoto’s dream about her and Ichimaru’s origin story, followed by news of Hinamori’s jailbreak). But they’re also the first time we see Hitsugaya and Matsumoto really interact.
In fact, we see Hitsugaya interact with Ichimaru (throwing out death threats) and Matsumoto interact with Hinamori (handing over contraband) before we get to see Hitsugaya and Matsumoto interacting with each other. We’re being introduced to them with these two other important people already in the mix.
What might we glean about Hitsugaya and Matsumoto, before we get to the Ichimaru bit? Across the board, Hitsugaya’s speech generally isn’t that formal, because he’s a boy in a shounen manga and he’s also the boss, so there’s less of a requirement, but I also think there’s an intimacy being shorthanded here. He could be less incredibly casual, pull a Byakuya and just use plain neutral language to address his subordinate, Matsumoto, but Hitsugaya also just did an entire ream of paperwork while she stress-napped in the office. He tells her, 構わん (kamawan, it doesn’t matter), using a shortened/masculine/superior’s form of 構わない (kamawanai). When describing Ichimaru and Hinamori’s altercation, he uses the phrase モメ方すりゃ(momekatasurya), the ending of which is a shortened/masculine/colloquial version of -すれば (sureba). Additionally, this phrase is made more casual/emphatic by using katakana instead of kanji [揉め becomes モメ]. We don’t know them yet, but we’re being asked to know them. We have about thirty seconds and two lines to do so: Syllables drop out and close the distance between them.
Despite this, Hitsugaya still seems to have a dim understanding of who Ichimaru might be to Matsumoto. His full line goes something like,
Seeing your cohortmate and junior in conflict like that would probably be trying for you, too.
Hitsugaya refers to neither Ichimaru nor Hinamori by name. Instead, Ichimaru is "douki," or cohortmate, and Hinamori is "kouhai" (junior cohort). Which, knowing what we know about Ichimaru and Matsumoto’s whole deal, feels like a somewhat inadequate way to describe it. XDDD The whole sentence is couched in the epistemic mood; Hitsugaya seems a little unwilling to assert anything concrete. Maybe Hitsugaya is trying to split the difference and be sympathetic while also not making assumptions, hence "douki" instead of “friend,” or “past lover” or “your version of a Hinamori, maybe...?”
This is where I go full doggy toy, because also like, what if we take Hitsugaya at his word here and accept that this is not as convoluted as it sounds, because douki is actually a meaningful and relevant relation within the Gotei?
The Viz translation is more natural than what I offered above (I mean, outside of the decision to refer to Ichimaru as "Gin" in the same breath as Hinamori is “Hinamori”―bold move, Captain Tôshirô!). "Your classmate Gin" still feels weird, though, because in an English-speaking context that kind of makes it sound like Hitsugaya’s throwing it back all the way to like, school classes at the Academy. But you can have Work Douki, as many large companies will welcome an incoming "class" of new employees who are entering the company at the same time. ...Of course, Matsumoto and Ichimaru did not actually… join the Gotei at the same time, either. Maybe they’re close enough, in the scheme of the thousands of years a shinigami might work for the Gotei. Though this would imply that Hitsugaya’s douki are RenjiKiraHinamori(Rukia), which I doubt is something he’d claim.
So I’m kind of taken by the idea that douki could have a looser literal meaning in the Gotei, and is one of the forms of relation that aims to capture a shinigami’s social affinities outside of one’s official seated rank.
Usually, the Gotei is all about rank, rank, rank. But we know there’s also Seireitei vs. Rukongai; there’s gender; there’s degree of nobility; there’s age. These things all matter―if they didn’t, we wouldn’t have a Shinigami Women’s Association; Hitsugaya’s life would probably be easier; the Kuchiki would pitch an absolute fit because of course degrees of nobility matter. Maybe having douki helps recapture the age/experience aspect of a shinigami’s understanding of self/relation, which might otherwise be wholly subsumed by rank.
If douki really is a meaningful aspect of shinigami life, Matsumoto could, say, have a social identity with the 10th, with the VCs, with the SWA, with her douki, and also with her miscellaneous friends. I like the idea that she would get to have all five of these things!
(…All that’s missing is NON-WORK FRIENDS/LOVED ONES…)
I’ve been saying "cohortmate" as a translation for douki, but in my experience in the United States, the cohortmate relationship isn’t quite as compulsorily ride or die as douki are “supposed” to be. For example, there’s a 2004 article in The Japan Times that explains douki as a
"cross between sibling and comrade — the unwritten agreement is that all douki will stick together, whatever happens. / They work together, organize drinking parties, invite each other to their weddings, keep in touch and communicate for decades, often until retirement."
Given that it’s Ichimaru we’re talking about, though, it’s sad, because I don’t think any of those things are actually true of Ichimaru and  Matsumoto’s relationship in the Gotei, except perhaps in the unwritten whisper that it should have been. They should have cultivated this support, shared these memories, expressed this loyalty—they should be ride or die for each other. But they don’t have that—at least, not in any material way Matsumoto feels.
Because in the end, Matsumoto doesn’t know who Ichimaru is, either:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Bleach 129]
Douki...? / Do you really― That Gin ― Ichimaru-taichou ―
More specifically, she says Ichimaru-taichou no koto (市丸隊長のこと), which softens the object of her thought. She’s talking about Ichimaru, but in the amorphous sense of the kind of person Ichimaru is, his essence, things he’s done, the general idea of him. The question comes out of Hinamori’s accusation about Ichimaru killing Aizen, but I don’t think Matsumoto’s really focused on the hard facts of a murder mystery. She’s asking after her captain’s read of who Ichimaru is. Which is a related but, I think, meaningfully different line of inquiry.
After all, we don’t actually have a murder mystery to solve, because Aizen isn’t dead.
What we do have are a spiderweb of tested loyalties (between Ichimaru and Kira, Captain to VC; between Kira and Hinamori, as douki; between Kira and Matsumoto, as VCs; Hinamori and Hitsugaya, as childhood friends; Hinamori and Aizen, not as her Captain but ~"as a man"). But not, notably, between Matsumoto and Hitsugaya, even though Hitsugaya and Ichimaru end up very much at odds.
From the beginning, Hitsugaya summons this idea of "douki" into the room, and perhaps that word clarifies all the things Ichimaru is not.
Maybe it’s then that Matsumoto knew this was going to be the last time she addressed those thoughts in the form of a question.

@notyetfixed ⁀➷ 𝑵𝒐𝒏-𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒕 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒔 Sender places a hand on receiver to stop them from doing something —Nox
Tumblr media
Returning from his trip, Vigor sees the familiar doors, and without having to be reassured time and again, he knows he is welcome. When everything else in his life felt like a horrible dream, the Bailey was the only thing that felt normal. Even returning to his greenhouse, his solace in younger years, meant confronting memories that twisted his passion into poison. A rot seeped through every memory and every dream, until there was only Nox and the Bailey to remind him of what a home should feel like.
But that rot had spread. He'd carried it with him to the Bailey.
Even from across the room, Vigor knew. There was nothing unique about his appearance, dressed down to fit in, but he knew. He can hear him talking to Nox. He's laughing. And why not? No one except him knew just how dangerous Irnvar was, and yet, the venomous serpent was hissing gentle words to Nox.
❝Do you see many Upper City boys pass through here?❞ Irnvar smiles, playful, but all Vigor sees is a proud predator toying with cornered prey. He can't be alone. If the other patrons aren't with him, then he will have hirelings waiting nearby. He wouldn't be foolish enough to come unprepared, after all. ❝They must pay well... on their father's coin,❞ Irnvar laughs, far too relaxed, speaking casually as if he wouldn't know.
A disguise could buy him time to excuse Nox to a back room, but his potions are spent. Still, he has to approach, placing himself where he could best protect her. He would never forgive himself if Nox got hurt whilst he informed the Briar Knights of the danger.
❝Then again, a common whore is a common whore. What difference does it make?❞ Irnvar muses, feigning curiosity for a little dramatic flare. He asks, as if he isn't steadfast in his opinion. Irnvar then lifts Nox's chin, commanding eye contact, and inspecting her like chattel. His gentle push soon turns into gripping her by the chin, tightening like a vice.
❝It's ownership. Should I pay you, or the petulant dog who owns you?❞
In an instant, Vigor has placed himself between Nox and Irnvar. Dagger brandished and tucked into his father's side. He'd been taught well, but nothing could stop the guard dog biting its master when they became the threat. Irnvar smiles. His heart had sunk when he first saw him, but now? It was alight with righteous fury.
It is only when Nox lends him her gentle touch that Vigor is stilled, grounding him in the moment. He can't do it, least the patriar's death invoke the wrath of the Flaming Fists, or any mercenaries hidden amongst the patrons. Besides, Nox doesn't even know who he is. Vigor needed time to explain just how bad this was. He looks back at Nox, awaiting her command.
