chapter eight: on your team

Bruins to play Canadiens tonight in Boston. Munson is three goals away from being one of the youngest players (and first openly gay NHL player) to hit 300 career goals—will tonight be a hat trick and a new record for the Bruins star scorer?

The only consolation to the All-Stars weekend was that Carver had earned himself a season long suspension and a ticket right to diversity training, and the Metro division had lost against the Pacific in the championships.

It was better than the alternative. Then again, he wouldn’t have been happy with any outcome that wasn’t them winning, so he supposed it was lose lose either way. Literally.

After All-Stars, Eddie put his head down and tried to get back to hockey.

He’d puked in the bathroom the morning of his first practice back with his own team. Archie had tried to reassure him that no one actually gave a shit about him being gay, but he hadn’t believed it until he’d walked into the room, braced for impact, and found nothing.

Jeff had clapped him on the back and winked at him, and Gareth sidled over with a soft smile. “Proud of you, man,” he said, before tugging Eddie into a bone crunching hug.

“For what?” Eddie laughed, as he hugged back. “I took the coward’s way out, bro.”

Gareth laughed and smacked him on the back. “For finally getting laid, dude. You know we’ve all been trying to help you with that for years.”

Eddie tossed his head back and honest-to-god cackled at the sentiment, and then he leaned in and winked. “Don’t you worry, Garebear. I’ve been just fine on that front.”

Then his heart sunk, just a bit, because he wasn’t going to be anymore. But he wasn’t about to tell the team that.

A Little TRON fic for your afternoon...

Inspired by this post [link] from @faeymouse.

Flynn doesn’t think anything of it when Tron asks him for a private word, but as they head out of Clu’s earshot, he catches a glimpse of the program’s serious expression, and begins to worry. Tron is taciturn even in the best of times, but he looks downright upset about something, and Flynn can’t begin to figure out what might be bothering him.

Tron finally stops walking, but he doesn’t turn to face Flynn. He bows his head, putting his hands on his hips.

“Is, uh, is something bothering you, Tron?” Flynn asks. Between the chaos at home with baby Sam, and Clu’s thinly-veiled irritation with his absences, he really doesn’t need another front to put out fires on.

Tron turns around at last. He still won’t meet Flynn’s eyes, though, instead looking out beyond him, at the glittering outlines of the city in progress. He says, “It’s nothing important, but…” He sighs, but his gaze finally meets Flynn’s. “You know Alan_1.”

It isn’t a question, but Flynn answers it like one. “Yeah, I do.”

“He is my User.”

“Yeah?”

His gaze flicks away from Flynn and back. “I know I must—appear similar to him, in your eyes.”

Flynn blinks. “What’s this about?”

“Please stop calling me by his name,” Tron says, his expression pained and pleading. “I have been trying to count it as a token of your esteem for us both, but—Flynn, I am not Alan_1. I don’t want his name; I have my own. I am grateful to hear of him, from you, but… I’m not him.”

Flynn stares. Whatever he was expecting from Tron, it wasn’t this. He hadn’t even realized he’d been calling him by his User’s name, though he can see instantly why it would make Tron so uncomfortable. The programs on the Encom system saw their Users as gods. No wonder…

He realizes that Tron is waiting for a response, and says quickly, “Oh, geez, Tron, I hadn’t realized—I mean, of course I’ll stop. I didn’t know it would bother you, man.”

Tron smiles, looking as relieved as Flynn feels. “Thank you, Flynn.”

He grins back. “Hey, it’s no problem. Though you’re gonna have to cut me a little slack for a bit. It’s gonna take a while to get myself to stop.”

“That’s all right.”

It takes the better part of a month for Flynn to get the hang of it, though one unfortunate side effect is that he starts calling Alan by his program’s name way more often. At the end of one late night meeting, Alan asks, “Flynn, you do remember my name, don’t you?”

Flynn nods. “Yeah—uh, Alan, yeah, I do.”

Alan shakes his head, sighing almost like Tron would. “That pause doesn’t fill me with confidence, Flynn.” He’s chuckling as he says it, though, which gives Flynn leave to laugh at his own forgetfulness.

He’ll figure it out, one way or another.

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

the older i get and the closer i am to reaching 30, the more the people around me try to deny me my age. it’s a constant ‘oh you’re just turning 29 again teehee 🤭’ or ‘dont tell your SO that, he’ll leave you for a younger model 😉’ and i just???? hate it?????????

i spent my entire teenaged years fighting for my life. i crawled through the deepest pits of my depression to cling to the promise of a life beyond that pain. i was so convinced that i was going to die young, that i would never see the grace of my age starting with a 2, let alone 3.

so im going to turn 30, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me from loving it.
