remembering what its like to read merlin fanfics : opened a fic, five translations, there is cover art

#this is kind of normal i juat missed it a lot #thats what happens when my friend mentions morgana means mermaid and i go #doesnt it mean sea circle? and then we check and like sometimes its #taken as dweller of the see but it suposespy comes from sea and circle/light #but can also be from the seashore sometimes so i get why someone would go to mermaid #but also not that im typing this out i feel like i need to look more into it and also #go read la morte darthur #which no. stop.#which is why im opening the bbc merlin fanfic #also its been. a time. and ive been getting into #okay you know what. i do have adhd i can admit it was a hyperfixation.#ive lost count of how many times ive reread these books but its probably over a hunder and absolutely over 50 #so i had a pretty bad hyperfixation on harry potter when i was eight. it calms me down to read harry potter fandiction #i didnt do when my original obsession with it happened and afterwards ive found that i avoid reading the later books and also the books #as a whole especially after jk rowling.. just kept going in that direction you know #but like in the period of time where i got so bored of reading mlb fanfiction that i watched voltron #just becausr i knew there was a lot of fic with it.... i realised that i har this nearly endless fountain of fic #so i got obsessed with marauders era fanfiction #because my two otps for that fandom are wolfstar and linny witch i dislike as a ship name a bit so ginny/luna #most other ships i go with okay whatever i dont care #i have found ships i like but it largely depends on the fic #ive never really been into drarry which is bold of me to say as someones whos red thta much drarry fics but i like #slytherin harry fics if they have nuance and you know. so many good hp fics are drarry. if you dont mind ejther way youre gonna see ita lot #i do mind fics that ship him with severus. i mind it a lot. which is where the robuts ao3 tagging systems comes in play #anyway point is ive been getting back into harry potter fanfiction which is a quick process because frankly i knwo my shit #but i dont really want to like. give it attention online. so i mostly quietly read my fics and die about #theodore nott from other peoples choices. on my own time.#.... searched for adhd harry potter. i adored the fic but i wont be reading anything else from this authour due to fandom differences #and there was nothing in the bookmarks except for this cool ron almost runs over dudley with a car #then dudley moves into grimauld place which hates him and hes going to culinary school with draco malfoy.

Arthur's blankets are the softest and warmest blankets Merlin has ever slept under.

The night is unbelievably cold in the winter that never seems to want to end, and the snow and wind bang violently against the castle walls, but Merlin is under Arthur's blankets, with Arthur beside him stroking his hair while the candlelight behind him forms strange shadows.

Arthur's arms encircle him as Merlin plays with the hairs on Arthur's chest -who sleeps shirtless even in the coldest winters, but now Merlin has to admit that trapped under heavy blankets and furs, hugging each other tightly, even he can get warm- running his skinny fingers through them and being fascinated. It may be the heat that goes to his head, it may be being held in an endless embrace or perhaps the hand stroking his hair or Arthur's chin resting on his head, but Merlin finds himself thinking back to the first time he set foot in Camelot.

He remembers the boy full of hope and eagerness to learn who set foot in that kingdom for the first time, he remembers when he thought he was a monster and how Gaius' words had comforted him, he remembers when he met Arthur (and smiles) and everything that has happened in those last ten years. The battles, the subterfuges, the lies, the torture, the friends lost, the people met, the goodbyes to Lancelot and Gwen, the death of Morgana, the tears shed and the heartbreak felt and the loneliness and the sense of abandonment and catastrophe and-

"What are you thinking about?" asks Arthur, from above his head, as Merlin's hand continues to caress his chest and Arthur's hand descends to stroke his back.

Merlin lifts his face slightly but the angle is too strange and he can only observe Arthur's jaw, but he knows Arthur's every imperfection by heart, his every sharp edge that he does not need to see his face to know he is smiling. Merlin kisses his neck, settles back comfortably in that cocoon made of arms and blankets and sighs, grateful.

"That I am happy."

Because Merlin is. Because he would do every single thing all over again just to be in that perfect moment with his king.

King Arthur sets out to keep his promise to the spirit of the Druid boy by repealing his father's ban on magic. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, for reasons including but not limited to the following:

I am going to RANT

But some people in this fandom are the reason why we can't have any good things.

I am so sick and tired so watching belligerent, ungrateful, bitchy, condescending asshole everywhere in this fandom, going after artists, after creators, after writers.

I want to ask--what do YOU fucking contribute? You descend on some of the best artists we have, and you moan about 'that's not how it is in the books' yet you contribute absolutely zero.

You take and take and take and you are disgustingly ungrateful, you terrorize people off platforms, you throw fits, you argue with anyone who has a different POV or opinion. You enjoy all this endless content for free, while others are toiling over art and writing and hell...Power Points! And nothing is ever fucking enough.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with people, and wither this pseudo anonymity of the internet made them overly bold, but I feel like people just lost all decency, all manners, all sense of humanity. Forget decorum. Forget politeness. Forget being civil.

You tear down those who give you things to enjoy and you treat everyone like utter shit.

Sometimes, I am so grossed out to be part of this, of this pathetic, irredeemable behavior that I just want to hang up my boots and never look back.

To watch such amazing artists now leave the SJM fandom entirely, to watch them be abused and insulted like they are unruly animals...is just...I don't know, soul destroying.

Morgana, Aileen, Jess, Fernanda, Beth, and so many more have been routinely hounded while they create fucking amazing art.

I am so disappointed right now. These are real people, with lives, with struggles, with children, with parents and partners, who all take time to PRODUCE something. And that's the thanks they get.

I don't know. I am going to take a break for the foreseeable future because this whole space is just mired in hatred and negativity. I don't know what people think they are winning in these battles, but I suppose, let's all enjoy another vast and empty creative space that's left in their wake.

Arthur

Arthur would be clueless as you are, maybe even worse.

The prince of Camelot wasn't raised to process his feelings properly (no thanks to dear old daddy), so he thinks his infatuation is under the pretense of friendship.

Many find it hilarious. Everyone knows how much Arthur loves you... except the two of you.

He just doesn't understand why he's always wanting more than the platonic affections you give him, yearning for you when you're not around, or thinking about you all the time.

Don't get me wrong, he knows he enjoys your company. Both his whole world and time stops when he's with you; the heavy responsibilities of the crown and endless problems are temporarily forgotten.

Arthur also feels the need to impress you, sometimes more than Uther. He already likes showing off to a crowd but when you're watching him? There will be 1000x more effort.

"Why do I feel this way, Merlin?"

"You are in love with (Y/N), clotpole."

"Oh. I suppose you're right."

"Is this the moment where you order me to get her flowers?"

"...Yes."

Merlin

I'm sorry but Merlin prefers it that way.

As much as he desperately wants to to straight up confess to you— to be able to touch you, kiss you, and love you openly, he doesn't want to put you in danger.

Apart from a secret that will get him executed, he deals with dark entities all the time and those will eventually catch up to him. He can't risk it, especially if it's you.

There will be a lifetime of labor and hardships if you choose to be with a manservant. Being with a druid will likely get you hurt or killed too. You deserve better than what he can offer. You deserve better than him.

His feelings for you may not be obvious as Arthur's but for people who are perceptive (ehem Gwen maybe?), they will encourage him to court you. He'll only reply that there's no use and you'll never see him as something more than a friend, especially if you're a noble or royalty.

However, Merlin is only human. There will be times when he can't help himself, giving you small gifts or favors he won't do for anyone (even Arthur).

"Thanks for the help, Merlin."

"I would do anything for you, (Y/N)."

"Why?"

"Uhh... Cause we're friends, right?"

Morgana

Morgana will make you her own amusement.

Best believe she will test you, to see how long can you remain unaware of her feelings. It entertains her to no end, better than the performers Uther hires in banquets.

She will go all out— giving you all sorts of touches that's reserved for lovers, bringing you expensive presents, always spending time with you, and even kissing you in both public and in private.

Morgana will search for any reaction on your face every time. But you just continue to innocently smile and thank her for being a 'good friend'.

Everyone thinks you two are dating because of her public display of affection but you shrug it off whenever someone asks you about it. Morgana, on the hand, just smirks and winks.

If it takes too long and she begins to get impatient, she will just knock on your door and confess her love.

"I am in love with you, (Y/N)."

"You are?"

"YES! How can you be so blind—"

"I thought we're just friends?"

"HOW IS MAKING OUT WITH YOU, PLATONIC?"

Until then, she and Gwen will be laughing at your obliviousness as they enjoy their afternoon tea.

Since this is such a good question, i want to answer it in full. Obviously Spoiler for BG3 / Astarions Questline "The Pale Elf" Vampirism is a Curse

Despite the evidence you can find in the Szarr Manor, i don't think Vampirism is (just) a disease. It is infernal in nature and more akin to a curse, and one that whittles away your humanity - but in levels, the more "infected" you are, the more it turns you into a power-hungry monster. It's also something that Astarion will tell you early on (under the right conditions of course) We also see this in the Palace itself, once we find the remains of the Vampire that turned Cazador. You'll learn what that Vampire did to Cazador - and how it panned out. That is because once you'll turn your Spawn into Vampires, they automatically become your Enemy in the endless fight for control/power

Weakness (this includes mercy) will get you killed if you're a Vampire.

Abuse / Trauma is Cyclical, and a bitch

Astarion didn't just face 200 years of trauma, but as we know through various interactions, was mentally and physically tortured. We're talking about flaying, sensory deprevation, starvation, repeated verbal abuse. Now, victims of this kind of abuse always fault themselves for it, even if they rationally know it's not their fault. Especially if mental torture is involved, these words, bearing enough repetition, will convince you - regardless of your resolve.

That is a loss of control, victims of with often either get addicted to, or will try to avoid it at any cost neccessary. The first kind will often seek out the situation in which they have been abused and try to recreate (or exced) the risk involved, the second type - to which Astarion belongs in my opinion - seeks to gain control, even over trivial matters, as a way to ensure that their needs are met. Nobody has been nice to him in 200 years, and then came Tav... he doesn't understand why they are so kind to him, but it feels good to be seen as more than a toy, a prostitute, a monster, - all the things he sees himself as, still, even away from Cazador. If you break up with Astarion before freeing him, he'll actually say that he knew it wouldn't last simply because he has "nothing to offer Tav, except his burdens"

(snippet of exactly that, in german) Yes, Astarion presents himself as this self-obsessed, smug Guy but that is all a facade to hide how he actually feels; weak, pathetic, lonely, useless, at fault for his abuse.

He is utterly in "love" with Tav.

Remember, Tav is the first person to see Astarion as more than just an object but as a person, and, on top of that, a person deserving of love and affection, regardless of what he brought to the table.

This feels good. Now, again, with Vampires everything comes down to power, and he can't have Tav leave. In this mix of dark urges & new, relatively unexplored feelings his love for Tav turns into an Obsession; He will not let them leave.

I will refer to @morgana-ren who has this point flashed out way more, but in short - by turning Tav into Spawn Astarion essentially ensures that they can't be taken from him. Neither through (natural) death nor by her own will, should they find out that Astarion has in fact, turned into a monster.

paraphrased: "don't move too far away from me... but you wouldn't do that, right?"

If you break up with him after he ascended and bit you, he will laugh in your face and not allow you to leave. You're his, after all.
