Uther Pendragon: Gaius, is it normal for one’s hairline to be receding so quickly?
Merlin, who has been magically fucking up his hair millimeter by millimeter, every time Uther gets on his nerves: 🫢

The funniest part of being a Merlin fan and a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan is the emotional whiplash you get seeing Giles after watching a whole bunch of Uther

Uther should have been THE villan of the series, and morgana should have been a side villan that would be redeemed eventually.
Sure Arthur in the legends never went to war with his father, but Morgana WAS redeemed. She literally stopped fighting her brother cause she didn't want to anymore.
Anyways, the drama potential of Uther, Morgana and Arthur all going to war with each other and the siblings joining forces at some point leaves rent free in my head.

I really wanna talk about this scene because I find Uther’s reaction really interesting.
Uther has rarely, if at all, shown any compassion towards sorcerers, or anyone suspected of sorcery. He was a tyrant. Uther was known to compulsively arrest and sentence people without trial or listening to any reason or explanation, which has led him to executing innocent people, such as Gwen’s father. Even when Arthur or Morgana have tried to change his mind, he usually didn’t. His hatred for magic made him compulsive and ruthless.
But this scene interests me because Uther hesitated to arrest Merlin when Aredian accused him of being a sorcerer. All the times before and after this episode, we see Uther not even think twice about arresting or sentencing someone without listening to any reason. But he trusted Aredian. Aredian concluded that Merlin was the sorcerer but for whatever reason, instead of arresting him, Uther gave Merlin a chance to speak up and defend himself. I find that really interesting because we know that Uther had little regard for Merlin’s life, or the life of anyone that wasn’t a noble. He wouldn’t have lost sleep over arresting or executing Merlin. He also didn’t like Merlin. And of all the times Merlin made a fool of himself and Arthur in front of the king, Uther really had no reason to trust anything Merlin said either. But he did trust Aredian and his methods and you’d think that Uther would have trusted his findings and not given any second thought to arresting Merlin. Especially since he often arrested and sentenced people for less.
My only theory for why he didn’t immediately arrest Merlin is that he knew Arthur would have raised hell, but I don’t really think that’s the reason. When it came to executing people suspected of sorcery, Uther was ruthless and I don’t think Arthur pleading with him would have done anything. Ultimately, I think if Uther had stuck to his reputation, Merlin would have immediately been arrested. I think this was a microscopic act of nobility from Uther. I’d love to know what was going through his mind though.

i’m so disappointed that we didn’t get to see a really big conflict regarding Arthur’s birth when the show was building up so much to it back in season 1 and 2. And i feel like we could have seen so much more.
we could have seen uther’s corruption from a wise king turning into a tyrant over the years, we could have gotten more about ygraine’s origin story and who she was as a person, and we could have gotten uther-nimueh/magic relationship before arthur’s birth. they could have shown to us so much more why arthur, merlin and gaius cared so much about keeping uther alive even though he’s a bitch 24/7
okay yes, there was that one episode but with morgouse, but arthur thought it was a lie at the end, and it never got revealed to him

Uther: Have you accepted that magic is evil and sorcerers are an abomination against God?
Arthur: Uh, you know, I meant to accept it, but then I just got really busy.

Bbc Merlin but as The Office; so that every time Uther or Arthur or anyone, for that matter, says some shit about magic, we get rewarded with Merlin looking straight at the camera and giving us the classic Jim face

Uther: Oh, so when a crow remembers people who wronged them and hold grudges, its "intelligent" and "really cool"
Uther: But when I do it, I'm "petty" and "need to let it go"

Arthur: Listen, Dad. I was wondering something. When was the last time that you said, "I love you" to anybody? Uther: "I love you"? Arthur: Yeah. Uther: What, do you live in a fucking fairyland or something?
