#elmax first kiss
Text
Max wasn't really in the mood to celebrate Christmas. Not yet. She was still grappling with the events of months ago and the whirlwind of emotions that came with it – relief, guilt, freedom, anger. She appreciated Lucas and Dustin for caring and always checking in on her, but they didn't truly understand. Not really. And that reflected in her relationship with Lucas. Despite his good intentions and the strong connection between them, Max just couldn't open up to him about Billy or how, at times, she wished she had died in his place. She couldn't share with him the intricacies of her complicated relationship with Billy and how, nonetheless, his death profoundly affected her.
Amidst all this, her bond with Eleven grew stronger. Somehow, El seemed to understand her, even if she didn't grasp the intricate details of human relationships. Despite all that had happened to her, El still possessed a great innocence towards feelings and relationships. Yet, when they were together, Max could relax a bit and feel lighter. When she had nightmares about the events at the mall, El rarely asked questions, knowing Max wouldn't talk much. Instead, she would just embrace her and let Max cry in her arms until she calmed down. The few times Max shared her feelings about Billy's death with Eleven, there was no judgment, only genuine and innocent curiosity in trying to understand something so complicated.
Over time, Max found herself sleeping more and more at Hopper's cabin, growing closer to Eleven. This brought forth the feelings Max desperately tried to bury, intensifying and nearing the surface.
In the midst of a crisis, Max would try to focus on the day she took Eleven shopping. It was one of the happiest days of her life. She never had many girl friends, finding them superficial and boring, but El was different. She wasn't superficial or boring, even when discussing sweaters and Christmas lights with Dustin.
A discreet smile formed on Max's lips as she listened to El and Dustin talk, stealing a glance at the girl. She looked adorable in that teddy bear and Christmas tree sweater.
"Sweaters are great! I don't know why Mike doesn't like them."
Max rolled her eyes. "Mike doesn't like many things." Mike was an idiot. He and El had broken up because El was spending too much time with Max. Seriously, how insensitive could that boy be? Not to mention, he added almost nothing to El's life. He didn't care to teach her anything that truly mattered, constantly disregarding El's or even Max's feelings.
"That's not true, I like a lot of things," Mike replied, emerging from Joyce's room, with Will following closely, each carrying a cardboard box. "But these sweaters are ridiculous."
"Your hair is ridiculous, and no one says anything," Max shot back before realizing what she was saying.
Everyone did their best to suppress their laughter at her remark, with limited success. She could feel Eleven's gaze on her but tried her best not to reciprocate. Max was aware that hiding her feelings for Eleven was getting harder each day, and the last thing she needed was for Mike to notice. Not that Mike was smart enough to notice anything. He probably hadn't even realized how long Will had been in love with him.
Max shook her head, pushing away those thoughts. No matter what she felt for El, nothing would happen. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, gripping the ladder tighter as Robin was on the second-to-last step, securing some lights on the wall of the Hopper-Byers living room.
"Remind me again why I, and not you, am up here putting up these lights?"
Robin's voice made Max raise her head. "Because you're taller than me," Max shrugged.
"And I'm also clumsier." Robin grumbled.
"Get on with it; we still have more lights to put up."
"Okay, okay." Robin grumbled and climbed one more step. "But if I fall—"
Max watched as Robin stretched on tiptoes to try to nail one end of the light to the wall when she lost her balance and fell off the ladder, taking Max with her.
"Ouch."
Despite the fall, Max couldn't help but laugh. Robin was completely clumsy, but she was also smart and funny. Over the months, Max found herself spending more time with Robin and Steve. Now that they no longer had the mall, and they worked at a video rental store, she and Eleven would often go there to pick up movies when Max stayed at the cabin.
"Oh, my God, are you guys okay?"
Joyce's concerned voice snapped Max out of her thoughts, and she pushed Robin. "We're fine, Mrs. Byers. Sorry."
"No need to apologize, dear." Joyce smiled at her with that sweet and understanding demeanor that always left Max a bit disoriented.
She observed as Joyce's attention turned to Eleven, and she got the impression that El was looking at her, but she couldn't be sure.
The living room door swung open, bringing in a gust of cold air as Hopper, Jonathan, and Nancy entered with more last-minute purchases. That was another thing Max liked; the relationship between Hopper and Joyce turned that group into a sort of extended family, where she and Robin were included without anyone having to think much about it. Max still remembered the early days in Hawkins, before meeting the boys, when she was skateboarding on the main street, fell, and Joyce ran over to check if she was okay. There was no judgment in Joyce's eyes for Max being a girl skateboarding or for her not-so-girlish clothes.
She liked the fact that now that El and Hopper lived at Joyce's house, it was closer for her to visit, and Max also enjoyed Joyce's cooking. Jonathan was cool too. He was always listening to music and talking with them. He genuinely cared about Will and his feelings, doing everything to let Will know he could count on him, no matter what happened. All she wanted was to have a brother like Jonathan. Or even Steve. He was the first person to stand up for her against Billy, who looked her in the eyes and promised that everything would be okay. The Hopper-Byers' house was cozy and had something that made Max feel safe there, even when everything was chaotic.
"Give me this." Nancy shook her head upon seeing Max and Robin still on the ground. "Help Max hold the ladder. Let me handle these lights. You're likely to send someone to the hospital."
Max involuntarily smiled as Nancy glanced at her and offered a smile. Nancy was amazing. She watched as Robin handed the Christmas lights to Nancy and assisted Max in setting the ladder upright, holding the other side.
"After we're done here, we're going to make snowmen," Mike said after a while. He was in a corner of the room with Will, Dustin, and El, decorating the Christmas tree.
"Snowman?"
Max's attention was immediately drawn to Eleven, like a magnet in a magnetic field. Her eyebrows were slightly furrowed in that adorable way when she was confused, and Max's heart skipped a few beats when El's gaze met hers. Every time Eleven looked at her, it was as if she could see through Max, as if she saw her soul, her deepest secrets.
She shook her head to clear those thoughts, noticing that Eleven was still looking at her. "You got this!" Max smiled.
(...)
After finishing the decorations, it was time to head to the backyard to build snowmen. Despite not being exactly in the Christmas spirit, Max loved the snow. It was one of the things she enjoyed most about moving to Hawkins. She grabbed her coat and put it on, zipping it all the way up. As she put on her gloves, she saw Joyce adjusting Eleven's coat and putting a hat on her head. It was amazing how Joyce seamlessly stepped into the role of a mother to El, almost eerily natural, as if El had been her daughter forever.
Max's heart tightened a bit at the thought, leading her to reflect on her own mother. Things got really ugly with Neil after Billy's death, and with no Billy to take out his rage on, he turned to Susan. Until Max had had enough and intervened, much like when she prevented Billy from beating Steve to death. After that, Neil left, leaving them with almost nothing. However, despite Hawkins being a small town with not much to offer, Susan soon found work at the downtown bank. It wasn't much, but at least they didn't have to stay in the trailer park for long.
The sound of the boys' laughter snapped her out of her thoughts, and Max ran over to El, taking her hand and running with her through the yard. The boys were already there, engaged in a snowball fight, and one came dangerously close to Eleven's head for Max's liking.
"Hey, idiots, watch out!"
"Sorry, El." Lucas had the decency to look guilty, and he smiled at them.
Max felt Eleven's gaze on her and turned to look at her. There was a mischievous gleam in her eyes, and Max immediately understood what she wanted to do. Oh, this would be funny. Max watched as El focused on her powers and created the largest snowball she had ever seen using only her mind. When the snowball reached a considerable size, El looked at her again, and Max just nodded. In the next moment, the boys were under the snowball El had made.
Eleven's laughter filled the air, and Max couldn't help but laugh along with her. The boys whined and dramatized while they laughed more and soon Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan appeared beside them to see what had happened.
"What? Did you do this?" Steve asked El, and Max couldn't help but smile at the innocent mischief in her eyes and Steve's expression. Seriously, he had seen El do a bunch of things, and he still marveled at her powers.
"Serves you right, dummies." Max stuck her tongue out at the boys and pulled Eleven by the hand to find a spot in the yard to build their snowmen.
Max knelt in the snow and began forming a snowball between her hands, showing Eleven how to start building her snowman. It didn't take long for them to finish - El gave a little help with her powers to stack the snowballs on top of each other.
After finishing building their snowmen, they joined the boys in a snowball fight, running and ducking to avoid the snowballs thrown their way. The sounds of laughter filled the backyard, filling the gaps in Max's heart. It was the first time she had felt genuinely happy in a long time. For the first time in ages, Max had momentarily forgotten her pains and traumas.
"Ouch, sorry." Max gasped when she fell over Eleven in the snow.
Eleven's intense brown eyes were a breathtaking contrast against the white snow. For Max, Eleven's eyes were the most expressive she had ever seen, but in that moment, shining with innocent mischief, they were even more beautiful than she could ever describe. Her heart skipped several beats when El's gaze met hers, and without realizing what she was doing, Max's eyes dropped to El's lips, and she leaned forward a bit, unaware of her actions.
"Hey, dingus, let's go inside before we become part of the decoration."
Robin's voice interrupted the moment, and Max felt her heart stop for a moment. What the hell was she doing? This was getting out of control. She couldn't just almost kiss Eleven in front of everyone. Especially without being sure if Eleven wanted it or understood the implications.
Mike's creepy move of starting a relationship with El when the girl barely grasped the concept was already enough. Max refused to be like him.
Since that day at the mall, Max had explained more about relationships to El - as well as her limited knowledge allowed. But still, what El knew about relationships and socializing was far less than them. Max quickly got up, feeling her cheeks burning, and extended a hand to help El up, but she couldn't bring herself to look at her at that moment.
"Come on, let's have some hot chocolate to ward off this cold!"
Joyce called from the door, and Max started walking into the house. She knew Eleven might be confused by her behavior, and she was almost certain that El would ask if she did something wrong as soon as they were alone. But how could Max explain to her? Talking about her feelings was out of the question. Besides, El didn't need someone as messed up as her in her life.
Max felt her heart race when El took her hand, intertwining their fingers and pulled her to the corner of the room where Nancy, Robin, and Erica were. They sat on the carpeted floor in front of them, and Max noticed something strange in Nancy and Robin's gazes.
She silently thanked when Nancy's attention turned to Eleven, and she said, "Your snowman looks really nice."
"It was my first time making one."
"You've never made a snowman before?"
Max rolled her eyes and shook her head upon hearing Robin's question. She knew Robin meant no harm, but she couldn't help her protective side kicking in.
"She lived in a lab, dingus. I doubt that old man was building snowmen in there."
Max immediately wanted to kick herself for saying something, as at that moment, Nancy and Robin exchanged a look that made Max shiver. Suddenly, it felt like they could read her thoughts and knew what she felt for Eleven when she herself couldn't quite explain it. She was screwed. So screwed. If they said anything to Hopper, he would rip her head off. He would shred her into pieces and serve her to others for Christmas. Or he might just cut her into bits and hide them around. He certainly knew how to do that. Oh, she was so screwed.
"The next step is learning to skateboard."
Robin's teasing tone snapped Max out of her spiraling thoughts, and she almost choked on her saliva when Eleven said, "I'd rather watch Max do it. She's really good at it."
"And to think when you two first met, you looked like you were going to rip Max's head off," Steve said amusingly, coming in with a tray of cookies.
"Things have changed. Now, I don't have a reason to knock her off the skateboard anymore."
"Wait, you were the one who knocked me off the skateboard that day at the school court?"
"Maybe."
Eleven bit her lip trying to hold back a smile, and Max's heart almost leaped out of her chest. The first time El had done that was on that day at the mall, when they were at Hopper's cabin after the outing, and on that day, Max thought she was going to have a meltdown right there. That part hadn't changed much.
"Oh, you're in so much trouble for that," Max said, narrowing her eyes, and pushed Eleven, falling on top of her again. Eleven gasped and burst into laughter as Max started tickling her. Max knew she had never heard a sound as good as Eleven's laughter in her entire life. She wanted to make Eleven smile every day, even if she couldn't smile every day.
Eleven laughed and squirmed beneath her, and for a moment, Max forgot about everyone around them. This was something between them, of them. Max was always tickling Eleven, and vice versa, but that day was different. There was something in Eleven's gaze that made Max's heart beat even faster.
When Jonathan approached with a tray of hot chocolate, Max stopped tickling Eleven and helped her sit down, noticing Robin and Nancy looking at them in a way that made Max's cheeks acquire a new shade of red.
After having cookies and hot chocolate, they settled in the living room to watch a movie, and then everyone went to have dinner. While the boys tidied up the room, Joyce went to the kitchen to check on dinner, and Hopper, Jonathan, and Steve set the table. Nancy, Robin, Max, Erica, and El helped bring dishes from the kitchen to the dining room.
El had just placed a dish on the table and was returning to the kitchen when she nearly bumped into Max.
"Sorry, I was distracted."
Eleven looked at her in a way that made Max's heart skip a few beats.
"Oh, oh! Mistletoe!"
Max felt her heart stop for a few seconds at what Robin said. She was going to kill whoever came up with the idea of hanging those stupid mistletoes around the house.
"What?"
Eleven and Max asked at the same time, and Max's voice came out sounding like one of those idiotic characters who cower at anything. She just hoped Eleven wouldn't think it had anything to do with her because Max couldn't explain the truth.
"Mistletoe. You know what that means."
Robin wiggled her eyebrows, but despite the gesture, there was no malicious intent in her.
"No, she doesn't!"
Max shot a furious look at Robin. Max blushed, turning as red as a ripe tomato. She was going to strangle Robin. Eleven was still learning many things, and although she had already grasped the concept of many things and improved her communicative skills and understanding of friendships, promises, and other things, romantic relationships were still very new and little talked about for Eleven.
Max knew that this mistletoe thing was just something silly and harmless, and she knew Robin meant no harm, but still. The mere idea of kissing Eleven made Max's heart race and stop at the same time.
"What's the mis- mis-"
"Mistletoe," Steve said, appearing next to El.
"Yeah, what about it?"
"It's just a stupid tradition," Max quickly said, hoping not only Robin and Steve but especially El would drop the subject. But of course, that was asking too much when it came to her best friend's relentless curiosity.
"What tradition?" Eleven asked, ignoring Max's eye roll.
"According to tradition, when two people find themselves under the mistletoe, they are supposed to-" Steve gestured vaguely.
"I don't understand."
"Oh, for God's sake." Max huffed in annoyance, even redder than before. "According to tradition, when two people find themselves under the mistletoe, they should kiss."
"Oh."
El's eyes widened, and Max could see her processing this information. Max wished a hole would open beneath her and swallow her, maybe even take her to the upside-down because that would be her death.
"Oh! Do you want... to kiss?"
Max felt her heart do a perfect backflip at that moment. She wasn't sure if El understood the concept, and she didn't want it to create a misunderstanding between them. Something that could potentially undermine their friendship. So, swallowing any trace of hope, she said, "We don't have to, El. It's just a stupid tradition."
"Ah."
Max tilted her head at Eleven's reaction. She seemed almost disappointed that Max dodged her question. Could that mean El wanted to kiss her? And more importantly, did El understand the implications?
Max knew Eleven didn't care much about society's definitions, but maybe it was only because she still didn't grasp many stupid societal concepts. Moreover, she didn't know how others would react. If Hopper disliked Mike, he might end up hating Max. He could forbid her from seeing or talking to El, and she couldn't risk that. But Eleven's rejected look was enough for Max to dare. She took a deep breath and said, "I mean, we can if you want, but it's not a big deal." She nervously laughed, glancing at Steve and Robin, who were trying to contain their amusement.
"If it's just a tradition, why not do it? Traditions should be fun, right?"
Oh, Eleven's innocent curiosity would be the death of Max. She was screwed. So screwed. But Max knew she would do anything for Eleven.
"Yeah, you're right. It's just a silly tradition." She then turned her attention to the mistletoe. "Okay, here we go."
When Eleven tilted her head and leaned towards Max, she felt her heart racing like never before, but she didn't want to risk so much. What if she was misreading the situation? So, Max leaned in, giving a gentle kiss on El's cheek. The room fell silent for a moment, and when Eleven touched her own cheek, Max thought she might faint. There was no way she was misreading that.
"Oh, come on!" Robin grumbled.
Max rolled her eyes again, her cheeks even redder than before. "Fine, you want a real kiss?"
She nervously looked at Eleven, praying she was reading the situation correctly and begging the universe that it meant the same to El as it did to her.
Max's heart raced as she leaned in, capturing the subtle anticipation in Eleven's eyes. The room around them seemed to dissolve, leaving only the magnetic and innocent attraction between them. Max could feel El's breath against her lips, a shared moment filled with unspoken understanding.
Their kiss was a delicate dance of emotions, a sweet symphony of connection. El's closed eyes reflected the vulnerability Max had seen in her friend for so long.
In that fleeting exchange, El's small smile revealed a world of understanding. Max sensed the genuine joy in her friend, and it echoed within her. It was a kiss that marked a shift in their relationship, an acknowledgment of something unspoken yet deeply felt.
As Max reluctantly pulled away, a twinge of longing lingered. The absence of their closeness left a void, and Max couldn't help but marvel at the subtle shift in dynamics. It was a kiss that, despite its brevity, carried the weight of revelation and understanding. Well, to some extent. Max was still far from truly understanding what was going on with her, and she knew the same went for El, but she felt they could rely on Steve and Robin to help them better comprehend.
Steve's applause and Robin's mischievous smile reflected the unspoken sentiments of those who had been rooting for this connection. Max couldn't help but chuckle, her cheeks ablaze with a rosy hue. Her eyes, still sparkling from the shared moment, met Eleven's gaze.  She tucked a strand of hair behind El's ear. "Well, that was unexpected."
"I liked it. Can we do it again?"
"Of course, El. As many times as you want."
Maybe Max had died, and this was heaven. Or she was just dreaming. And if that was the case, she didn't want to wake up anymore.
(Max's pov)

i had a thought yesterday and now i need to share cause.
stranger things x the last of us au
hopper and el as joel and ellie.
IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!!
hopper and joel both had daughters named SARAH and they both died-
they both went through the trauma of losing a child and resorted to unhealthy coping mechanisms and closing off as a way to deal with it-
and both have their heart warmed up, years later, by a special girl named EL(lie) and their parenting flame is resurfaced and they care so much and would do anything for the kid, sacrifice themselves and MOVE MOUNTAINS for them!!!!!!!!!
(also el and ellie are both lesbians so <3)

Awesome. I have a request if you don't mind.
A scene rewrite of Elmax literally in bed together. Essentially the same, but with *slightly* more making out.
oh you just made me remember I have a wip ficlet of this, kind of. I adore that scene and see it as special for both El and Max for non shippy reasons so I'm not interested in turning it into a makeout fic (and I would say that even if they had been adults in it). I have unrelated older elmax stuff in the works that may be more to your liking though

It is my biggest pet peeve when (mostly) straight people try to make queer people feel guilty for shipping two same gender characters together or say it's problematic to ship them, so I've made a little list debunking their ideas. I'll be talking a lot about Byler but this also applies to Elmax, Ronance, Steddie and queer ships in general.
"Why can't people be friends anymore?" Why can't a guy and a girl be friends either? Why aren't you saying this about Chrissy and Eddie shippers? Unless the issue is that they're gay.
"You're assuming Will is gay based on stereotypes!" Of course, the horrible stereotype that gay guys like men but not women, how problematic of me.
"You're fetishizing children!" No one says this about M*leven shippers. The fact that you view a queer relationship as inherently sexual and adult is sexualising young people much more than shipping Will and Mike does.
"Men will be scared to be affectionate to their friends in real life in case people think that they're gay!" First of all, I doubt some straight guy is going to stop hanging out with his friend because some random person on the internet drew Steddie fanart. And second of all, why are we treating straight men's fear of being perceived as gay as a perfectly valid and normal fear? (I elaborate a bit on this point in the reblogs)
"Why is it okay to say Mike Wheeler is gay but not say Robin is straight? You're erasing his sexuality!" First of all, when did Mike say he's straight? Sure he said he loves Eleven (which I doubt he does anyways) but bi people exist. Plus, there are so many straight characters and ships out there. Straight people don't look up lists of shows with canonical queer representation or watch a show because it has a straight girl in it. Lesbians like myself look up to characters like Robin and they are meaningful to them. No straight person feels seen in their heterosexuality because of Mike Wheeler. The only exception in my opinion is when people headcanon straight characters who are dating trans people as bi like Tao from Heartstopper because that comes off as transphobic.
"They're too young to know that they're gay and you're forcing a sexuality on them." I've known I'm gay since I was eleven or twelve which is the age they are in S1. And yet again, why aren't you saying this about straight people! Everyone accepted that Dustin and Lucas liked Max in S2. Yet Will is too young to know who he likes... Interesting.
"Grown adults wanting two young boys to kiss each other is pretty weird." The issue with this is again the hypocrisy. Adult M*leven shippers don't get told this. Mike kissed Eleven in S1 and it was completely cute and non-sexual because they are children so of course it isn't sexual. Hell they even made out when they were 13 and no one complained. Why would that be any different if he kissed Mike instead of Will? Yet again, people view queer people as being inherently sexual but queer people get cute little crushes or want to kiss people sometimes too. It's not a sexual thing. It's the exact same as a straight person doing it.
Anyways that's my rant done. It just annoys me when half of their arguements saying why it's wrong to ship these characters are just masked homophobia, even if the person saying it doesn't realize. Feel free to add more to this in the reblogs, this is just what I've seen.

No one asked but I'm bored so here are my ratings of popular Stranger Things ships! (kind of a long post).
Disclaimer: Ship who you wanna ship. This is just for fun :)
Byler: 100/10, I love my boys. No notes.
Lumax: Also a 100/10. They're just so!!!
Elmax: 9/10. I love them with my whole heart but I'm a Lumax shipper first and foremost.
Elumax: 100000/10. Literal perfection. Elmax AND Lumax (and Hopclair, depending on how you view the ship dynamic)? Literally what more could you want?
Duzie: 7/10. They're cute and I really like Suzie. I wish we could've seen more of them, maybe Suzie will come back with a bigger role next season.
Henderhop: 6/10. Typically I HC El as a lesbian but I actually like this pairing. Definitely not a ship I'd die on but I enjoy interacting with the fan content.
Henderclair: 6/10. Listen, I love their dynamic. If I didn't HC Dustin as the token straight, I'd probably rate them higher. Platonically? Literally everything to me. Romantically? I'm not opposed.
Byclair: 8/10. I also like them a lot but I'm a die-hard Byler shipper. I do enjoy interacting with the fan content though!
Wheelclair: 7/10. They're silly and I love them but this is a particular dynamic I prefer platonic. I do HC that Mike had a crush on Lucas when they were younger though.
Mileven: 1/10. I'm just not a fan. I'm giving them a one solely cuz I enjoyed them in season 1 when I first watched the show in middle school, but I'm definitely not a fan of this ship at all. Platonically though?? Amazing.
Jancy: 10/10. I love them. I'm praying every day that the Duffers didn't completely fuck them up and that they'll be endgame.
Ronance: 9/10. I like them, they're cute. I interact with a lot of their fan content. Let's go lesbians.
Rovickie/Rockie: 7/10. I just don't know enough about Vickie yet to know if them as endgame is what I'm rooting for, but from what we've seen they're cute.
Stonathan: 10/10. I love them and I'm so excited for their interactions in season 5! They're the enemies to lovers.
Jargyle: 9/10. Love me some stoner boyfriends. They've definitely kissed before at least once.
Stancy: -10000/10. BOOOOOOO 🍅🍅🍅. They are not right for each other. Steve deserves someone who loves him and Nancy deserves someone she loves.
Stoncy: 3/10. If it's in the way that Steve and Jonathan are dating and Jonathan and Nancy are dating with Nancy and Steve being platonic, then sure. But if it's all three dating, nah. Steve and Nancy just don't work imo.
Buckingham (Chrissy x Robin): 8/10. I think this is considered a rare pair but I think they're adorable and I love the fan content around them.
Hellcheer: 5/10. Not my favorite but I have no issues with this ship. I see the vision of them as best friends mainly.
Steddie: 5/10. They're not bad and I interact with some of their fan content (some of their tiktok edits go hard), but they're just kind of okay, you know?
Jopper: 10/10. I love them. Been a Jopper fan since day one. They're so endgame.
If there's any other ships you want to know my opinion on, let me know!
(All fun and games here, y'all. Ship whatever you want)

It was Eleven's first Christmas, and she couldn't be more excited. The whole concept was still new to her, but El enjoyed seeing houses and businesses adorned, the large Christmas trees with all those colorful balls and other ornaments, not to mention the snow.
People also seemed to have a penchant for themed sweaters, and that was one of the things Eleven liked the most. Most people said they were horrible, and especially the boys, like Mike, refused to wear anything resembling a Christmas sweater, but El loved them.
Hopper had bought her four sweaters with Joyce's help, and El suspected, with Max's assistance as well. Although Max claimed not to be a fan of such things, Max knew El's tastes better than anyone, even better than Mike.
Thinking about Max made the corners of Eleven's mouth curve up in an involuntary smile and brought warmth to her heart. Since the events of that fateful July 4th, they had started spending more time together. At first, El felt guilty about everything that had happened, especially Billy's death, even though he wasn't a good person, especially to Max.
El knew she didn't understand relationships very well, and she didn't understand, especially, how Max could feel so bad about Billy's death, but Max was her friend, and she was very sad, and El hated seeing her that way. Not to mention the nightmares.
Right after Billy's death, Max told her that things were ugly at her home, with Neil arguing with her mom more and more intensely. El knew she couldn't use her powers on Neil, but she could try to keep Max safe, so she always found an excuse for Max to sleep in the cabin, and Hopper seemed more than happy to accommodate her requests.
When Max woke up screaming and crying on the first night, Eleven woke up startled, but seeing her friend's state, the shock was replaced by guilt and concern. She didn't know what to do; all the movies she had ever watched never showed how to comfort a friend.
So, El let her instincts speak. She pulled Max close and hugged her as best as she could, and felt relieved when Max didn't reject her approach, but instead buried her head in her neck and gripped her pajama shirt, letting tears flow freely as sobs shook her entire body. Despite the trauma and sadness that moment represented for Max, and for El too, she couldn't help but like how it brought them even closer.
"Earth to Eleven."
Dustin's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, and she noticed he was staring at her. "What?"
"Is everything okay? You were—" Dustin shrugged. "I don't know, seemed like you were far away."
"But I didn't go anywhere." Eleven furrowed her eyebrows, looking confused at Dustin.
"No." He smiled. "It's like when we start thinking about something, or remembering something, and get carried away by it, you know?"
"Ah." Eleven's eyes shifted to Max for a moment, then back to Dustin. "I think I know."
Eleven watched in silence as Dustin, always so perceptive, seemed to study her for a moment, as if deciding something, and then he just shrugged and asked, "How are you liking Christmas so far?"
"I like the lights and the sweaters." El smoothed her sweater as if to make a point.
"Sweaters are great! I don't know why Mike doesn't like them."
"Mike doesn't like a lot of things." Max grumbled from where she was, helping Robin put up some lights on the wall.
"Not true, I like plenty of things." Mike replied, coming from Joyce's room, with Will right behind him, each carrying a cardboard box. "But these sweaters are ridiculous."
"Your hair is ridiculous, and no one says anything."
Max shot back, giving Mike a challenging look. El watched the scene and felt her heart warm. She knew that was Max's way of defending her interests, and she liked how Max didn't care if she had to argue with Mike or anyone else to defend her. Not that she needed someone to defend her, but it was nice to know there was someone willing to do so.
She smiled, seeing Max narrow her eyes at Mike, and the way she lifted her chin slightly.
She knew the other boys would hardly stand against Mike, especially Will, even though they were almost brothers now, and she understood. They had been friends for many years, and she was the outsider. Just like Max.
Maybe that's what brought them together, in parts. And it was good to have someone to talk to and spend time with beyond Mike and the boys, especially now that she and Mike were no longer together. Someone to teach her things that Mike could never. And who understood her.
"She's doing it again."
Dustin's voice brought Eleven out of her thoughts, and she looked at him for a moment. "Sorry."
"Nah, no need to apologize." Dustin smiled and tossed a ball to her. "Help me finish decorating the tree."
Eleven nodded and joined Dustin and Steve to decorate the Hopper-Byers Christmas tree.
Yes, that was another thing Eleven liked a lot; since the events on July 4th, Hopper and Joyce had started going out, or as Max had explained to her, having dates. It was good because Hopper smiled a lot now, and so did Joyce.
And it was really nice to have a large family, even though Eleven was still getting used to all this. Being closer to town, she and Hopper had moved to Joyce's house a few months after the July 4th events.
She wasn't sure how it had happened, but one day Joyce came to the cabin to talk to her and ask if Eleven would like to live with her, Hopper, and the boys in her house.
What Eleven liked most about Joyce was that she didn't try to use anything to convince El about anything. Instead, she sat and talked with her, giving options, explaining things, and letting Eleven decide what she would do.
Max's laughter filled the room, drawing Eleven's attention, and she smiled widely at seeing her friend on the floor with Robin on top of her. Robin had fallen from the ladder. Again. Eleven didn't know Robin as well as Dustin, Erica, or Max, but she liked her. Robin was funny and smart, and she made Max laugh. That was one of the things El liked most about Robin.
"Oh my God, are you guys okay?"
Joyce came from the kitchen upon hearing the noise, hands covered in flour and something else.
"We're fine, Mrs. Byers." Max laughed, pushing Robin. "Sorry."
"No need to apologize, dear." Joyce smiled kindly, and her gaze shifted to Eleven. "Are you okay?"
"Yes." Eleven nodded, her eyes finally leaving Max. "I'm fine."
The door opened, bringing in a blast of cold air as Jonathan, Hopper, and Nancy entered with more Christmas shopping; food, last-minute decorations, and extra gifts.
"Hello, kiddo."
Hopper ruffled Eleven's hair as he passed by her. Eleven smiled at him but didn't stop what she was doing. She picked up another ornament from one of the boxes Will and Mike brought from the room and busied herself helping the boys decorate the tree.
Jonathan joined them and went to help Steve with other decorations while Nancy took the Christmas lights from Robin's hands, instructing her to help Max hold the ladder so she could put the lights on the wall.
Surprisingly, Lucas was helping Joyce in the kitchen. Apparently, he had a hidden talent and a taste for cooking that caught everyone by surprise, but no one was complaining or judging him.
"After we finish here, we're going to make snowmen," Mike said, his smile widening.
"Snowmen?" Eleven furrowed her eyebrows.
"Yeah, with the amount of snow piling up in the backyard, we can make a bunch of them!" Will said, excited. "But don't worry, El, we'll show you how to do it."
Eleven nodded, and without even realizing what she was doing, her eyes met Max's across the room. Her lips curled up into an involuntary smile, and she felt relieved when Max said, "You got this!"
(...)
After finishing decorating the tree, walls, and doors, Eleven and the others headed to the backyard of the Hopper-Byers house. The house was larger than when El first set foot there; when Joyce asked if she would like to live with her and the boys and Eleven said yes, Joyce and Hopper started the project of renovating the house to accommodate everyone. It wasn't a big house like Mike's or the other boys', but it was cozy and familial, and most importantly: Eleven felt safe there.
"Here, let me help you with this," Joyce said, stopping Eleven on the porch. "There you go, now you're ready." She said, closing the zipper of Eleven's winter coat and adjusting a beanie on her head.
"Thank you."
"Come on, El, let's go."
Eleven felt her heart race, as it always did every time Max took her hand and smiled at her that way, highlighting her dimples. She ran hand in hand with Max across the yard and joined the boys, who were making snowballs with their hands and throwing them at each other.
"Hey, you idiots, be careful!"
Max shouted, sending an irritated glance toward the boys when a snowball came too close to Eleven's head.
"Sorry, El!" Lucas offered an apologetic smile.
Eleven looked at the boys, one by one, and then exchanged a glance with Max, in a silent conversation only they understood. Max nodded, and Eleven's smile widened.
She looked back at the boys, her expression neutral as she focused on her powers and made a massive snowball float just above the boys' heads. She exchanged another brief glance with Max, who nodded, and Eleven turned to the boys with a smile on her face that they knew well at this point.
With a slight nod of her head, the snowball fell onto the boys, and she and Max burst into laughter.
"Hey, that's not fair!"
"This is cheating!"
"I'm going to freeze to death."
The girls' laughter intensified in the face of the boys' indignation and drama, and soon Steve, Robin, Nancy, and Jonathan were by their side to see what had happened.
"What-" Steve blinked, confused. "Did you do that?" He turned to Eleven, eyebrows raised slightly.
Eleven just nodded, laughing. Her eyes sparkled with innocent mischief, and soon everyone was laughing at the boys partially trapped under the snowball.
"Well done, you idiots." Max stuck her tongue out at the boys and pulled Eleven by the hand. "I think here is good to build our snowmen."
"If you say so."
To anyone else, this simple phrase might sound rude or dismissive, but El knew that Max already knew her well enough to know that it was just her agreeing with Max.
"First, you do it like this," Max said, kneeling in the snow and grabbing a handful of snow between her hands, forming a small ball. "You make a snowball like this, and you keep adding snow to this ball until it's about thirty centimeters."
Eleven nodded and started doing the same as Max, gathering snow until she formed a ball large enough for them to place on the ground and roll it to achieve the ideal size for the bottom part.
With the corner of her eye, Eleven noticed that the boys had already been freed from the snow and were building their own snowmen.
She turned her attention back to the snowman she was building with Max, and soon they moved on to the middle part. Building the snowman was faster and easier than Eleven expected - especially when you have powers and can use them to stack the snowballs on top of each other, she thought. Once they finished, they ran inside the house to grab scarves, hats, and other things to decorate their snowmen.
They placed carrots as noses, blue bouncing rubber balls and green gems for eyes, and colorful pebbles for the teeth. Eleven put a blue scarf on her snowman, and Max put a red one on hers.
"Now we need sticks for the arms," Max said.
Eleven joined her in searching for the ideal sticks for their snowmen's arms, and after a few minutes, they were complete. The boys', however, were still halfway done. That's because every now and then, they interrupted the snowman building to play snowball wars or to mock each other's snowman-building skills.
With not much else to do, they joined the boys in the snowball fights and chases, zigzagging between the snowmen in the yard.
Eleven had never felt such happiness in her life as in that moment; surrounded by people she loved and trusted, people who cared about her and saw her as more than a girl with special powers.
She never imagined it was possible to feel such joy, the kind that feels like your heart might leap out of your chest at any moment, and this feeling intensified when she and Max fell into the snow - breathless and sweaty - with Max on top of her.
Her eyes locked onto Max's, and Eleven felt her heart race. Max's blue eyes were already mesmerizing on an ordinary day, but in that moment, against the gray sky and with cheeks red and glowing with a happiness Eleven hadn't seen in months, they seemed even bluer, even more captivating. Eleven felt her breath catch in her throat as Max's eyes dropped to her lips, and she thought she saw something in them, like when Mike went in for a kiss, but she wasn't sure.
"Hey, dingus, let's go inside before we become part of the decoration."
Robin's voice interrupted that moment, and Max's eyes widened as she quickly got up; her cheeks turned an even deeper shade of red. She reached out to Eleven and helped her up, but for some reason, it seemed like she was avoiding her eyes.
"Come on, let's have hot chocolate to ward off the cold!"
Joyce called from the door, and Eleven followed Max inside. She still held her hand, but something felt different. Max seemed tense and thoughtful, and El wanted to ask her if she had done something wrong, something that upset her, but she knew she would have to wait until they were alone for that.
As they entered, each one hung their coats on a hook. Hopper was in the living room, sitting in his armchair and sipping on a mug of hot chocolate, but Eleven was pretty sure it wasn't just chocolate in there. He smiled at her, and she returned his smile.
Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas sprawled out on the carpet, all talking at the same time and gesturing wildly. Jonathan and Steve went to the kitchen to help Joyce bring trays of hot chocolate and cookies, while Nancy, Robin, and Erica settled on a sofa.
Eleven pulled Max by the hand, and they sat on the carpet near where Nancy was. El liked to look at Nancy. She was so different from Mike, with her big, intense, blue eyes, completely different from her brother's dark brown eyes.
"Your snowman looks really nice," Nancy said, pulling Eleven out of her thoughts.
"It's the first time I've made one."
"You've never made a snowman before?" Robin's eyes widened, and she grumbled when Nancy nudged her.
"She lived in a lab, dingus. I doubt that old man made snowmen there."
Max's protective tone made Eleven smile involuntarily, and she noticed Nancy and Robin exchanging a look, like the ones she and Max exchanged sometimes, but at the same time, it was different.
"But now you're here, and you'll build many snowmen from now on," Nancy said gently.
"Yes," Eleven smiled. "And I can also go to the arcade, and to the movies, and I learned how to ride a bike. Hopper even gave me one!"
"The next step is learning to skateboard," Robin said, wiggling her eyebrows.
"I prefer to watch Max do that. She's really good at it."
"And to think that when you two first met, you looked like you were going to rip Max's head off," Steve said playfully, coming with a tray of cookies for the girls.
"Things changed. Now I don't want to knock her off the skateboard anymore."
"Wait, you were the one who knocked me off the skateboard that day at the schoolyard?" Max's eyes widened comically, her mouth open in disbelief.
"Maybe." Eleven bit her lip, trying to hold back a smile.
"Oh, you're so in trouble for that." Max said, narrowing her eyes and pushing Eleven, falling on top of her again.
Eleven gasped and burst into laughter when Max started tickling her. When Jonathan approached with the tray of hot chocolates, Max stopped tickling Eleven and helped her sit up, and although that had been a normal moment between them - Max often tickled her - while sitting, Eleven noticed that Max was still avoiding her gaze a little.
Eleven tried not to care about it and not to dwell on it at that moment. Later, she would ask Max, and whatever it was, they would figure it out together. She accepted the mug of chocolate that Jonathan handed her and focused on eating some cookies.
After eating and drinking, everyone settled in the living room to watch a movie, and it took longer debating which movie to watch than to actually watch it.
After the movie ended, Joyce went to the kitchen to check on dinner while Hopper, Jonathan, and Steve set the table. Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin took charge of tidying up the living room, while Nancy, Robin, Max, Erica, and El helped bring dishes from the kitchen to the dining room.
El had just placed a plate on the table and was heading back to the kitchen when she nearly bumped into Max.
"Sorry, I was distracted," Eleven said, still standing in front of Max.
"Oh, oh!" Robin's voice made El shift her gaze from Max to her. "Mistletoe!"
"What?"
El and Max asked simultaneously, but Eleven could sense a nervousness in Max's voice that rarely made an appearance. She looked at her friend and saw that she was as white as the sheet she once used for a Halloween costume.
"Mistletoe. You know what that means," Robin wiggled her eyebrows, but despite the gesture, there was no malicious intent in her.
"No, she doesn't!"
Max shot a furious look at Robin. Eleven knew she had a lot to catch up on, but she didn't understand why Max seemed so upset. Max blushed, turning as red as a ripe tomato, and El, oblivious to social implications, was genuinely confused.
"What's the mis... mistle-"
"Mistletoe," Steve said, appearing beside her.
"Yeah, what about it?"
"It's just a silly tradition," Max quickly said.
"What tradition?" Eleven asked, ignoring Max's eye roll. She knew Max did that when she was annoyed or upset, and she knew it wasn't anything personal against her.
"According to tradition, when two people find themselves under the mistletoe, they should-" Steve gestured vaguely.
"I don't understand."
"Oh, for God's sake." Max huffed, annoyed, even redder than before. "According to tradition, when two people meet under the mistletoe, they're supposed to kiss."
"Oh." El's eyes widened, still innocent, and she looked at Max. "Oh! Do you want to... kiss?" she asked.
Max hesitated, her eyes shifting between El and the mistletoe. She managed a small, uneasy smile. "We don't have to, El. It's just a silly tradition."
"Ah." Eleven didn't know why, but the fact that Max seemed uncomfortable with the idea of kissing her made her feel sad.
Max took a deep breath, seeming to notice El's unease. "I mean, we can if you want, but it's not a big deal." She nervously chuckled, looking at Steve and Robin, who tried to contain their amusement.
She couldn't understand why Max seemed so bothered by this seemingly harmless tradition, but the subtle uncertainty in Max's eyes caught her attention. "If it's just a tradition, why not do it? Traditions are supposed to be fun, right?"
"Yeah, you're right. It's just a silly tradition." She then turned her attention to the mistletoe. "Okay, let's do it."
El tilted her head, still unsure. She didn't want to upset her best friend.
Max leaned in, giving El a gentle kiss on the cheek. The room fell silent for a moment, and El touched her cheek, feeling the warmth there.
"Oh, come on!" Robin grumbled.
Max rolled her eyes again, her cheeks even redder than before. "Fine, you want a real kiss?"
She turned to El, who nodded, now understanding the situation a bit better.
Eleven watched as Max leaned in slowly, her eyes locked on El’s. As their lips met, El's eyes fluttered closed as the new sensations swirled within her.
The room faded away, leaving only the warmth of Max's lips against hers. The kiss was sweet and innocent, yet filled with unspoken emotions. El found herself enjoying the sensation, and a small smile played on her lips. Max's kiss was gentle yet firm, so different from Mike's sloppy ones.
Before she could fully process what was happening, Max had pulled away again, and El immediately missed their closeness. Although she still didn't understand many things, that kiss made her comprehend a bit the confusing feelings she had been experiencing toward Max for the past few months.
As they pulled away, there was a discreet celebration from Steve and Robin. "It was about time!" Steve smiled, clapping.
She tucked a strand of hair behind El's ear. "Well, that was unexpected."
Max chuckled, her cheeks still very red, and her eyes sparkling in a way Eleven hadn't seen in a long time.
"I liked it. Can we do it again?"
"Sure, El. As many times as you want."
Max was still as red as a tomato, but she didn't seem upset anymore, Eleven noticed. This time it was El who leaned in and pressed her lips softly against Max's. “Okay.”
(let me know if you are interested in reading Max pov as well.)

I wanna talk about one of the posts that the stranger things official Instagram account posted on stranger things day and that’s the one with "the most…"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s three clips that played back to back in this video. The first of byler. Will showed Mike his painting and according to stranger things they had a “heartfelt” moment. Following this clip of byler being adorable there were Robin and Vicky flirting, then Joyce and Hopper also flirting which then lead to their first kiss. They purposely put all these couples together to show they would end up together. Unlike El and Max which were the only other “ship” in the video and were right after Eddie playing guitar (most metal ever), and before max battling vecna (most emotional ever).
Tumblr media
They did this to separate elmax from byler and show they’re not both just “crackships” created by the fans’ minds. They proved that byler is different from elmax and while we know that elmax probably isn’t happening despite what we may really wish for but we know that max will most likely end up with Lucas. Byler will actually be a real couple-unlike elmax-and they will be endgame

Happy For You
This prompt features both ronance and elmax. Both coming out to each other. It's not what I typically write, but I hope you enjoy.
Do you have any prompts yourself? Or do you want to dive into what I wrote before? You can read my previous prompts or send me some new ones.
Max seemed tense. She had her hands pushed in between her legs and she avoided eye contact with both Nancy and Robin. El, on the other hand, was staring both of them down. One wrong word and she’d lash out. Nancy had never before been scared of El, but she nearly was now.
“I’m very happy for both of you,” Nancy started.
“And I’m not at all surprised,” Robin joked. She was leaning back on the couch. Just as relaxed as she always was. She might have been the only relaxed person in this room.
It had a positive effect on Max who finally looked up and smiled at them. “You weren’t surprised?” she asked.
“Nope, I saw it coming. You two were far too close.”
“Kinda like you and Nance?” Max teased.
Robin glanced over at Nancy. She nodded. “Yeah, exactly like me and Nance actually.” There was a bright smile on her face.
“What are you saying? Are you and Nance…” Max wiggled her finger between them.
“Yes, we are,” Nancy confirmed. It was still new. They had only been together for a few weeks. Nancy had hoped to keep it quiet a little bit longer. But she was fine with this. With El and Max knowing. It was only fair after they came out themselves.
“I’m very happy for you,” El said with a smile. Nearly mimicking what Nancy had said to them mere minutes ago.
“I think this calls for a group hug!” Robin jumped up.
El was nothing short of excited as she flew into Robin’s arms, quickly followed by both Max and Nancy.
“Robin, be careful where that hand goes,” Nancy warned as she could feel Robin’s hand sliding down her back.
“I can’t believe I didn’t see this before,” Max exclaimed, pulling away from the hug. “You guys are so obvious.”
“Well, so are you and El,” Robin shot back.
“No, we’re not.”
“Oh, you so are.”
“El, tell her we’re not obvious.”
El raised her shoulders. “I don’t mind being obvious.”
“That is so adorable, El. I bet you are a wonderful girlfriend,” Robin said.
“I agree with that,” Max joined in. “You’re a wonderful girlfriend.”
“Oh wow, I have one of those too.” Nancy pulled her girlfriend closer, kissing her cheek.
“From now on we should totally go on double dates. You guys can chaperone us and it’ll just look as if we’re hanging out with a group.” Max was the first to sit back down.
“Sure, we can do that.”
“I can’t say I expected it to go this well,” Max confessed.
“Well, me and Nance are full of surprises.”

🍦I just got the elmax ice cream thing
ok El's ice cream has been bugging me and I finally have the answer to a question you didn't ask
Tumblr media
as I and many others have said, Max suggesting the trade was sus given how much more of her ice cream cone El appears to have eaten already. even if Max likes strawberry and vanilla equally, she's taking a significant loss in this deal in ice cream volume.
while that's true, I want to note that El hasn't eaten any more of her cone than Max has of hers. they both look almost the same as when they received them:
Tumblr media
Steve didn't seem to be charging them, so budget wasn't an issue, but Max's order is a modest single scoop of strawberry. El's order is vanilla with extra whipped cream and sprinkles.
now I know this is totally subjective and no offense to vanilla as a flavor but... girl, this is the weirdest, blandest ice cream order. sprinkles look fun but have no taste. whipped cream is good but not hugely flavorful, mostly a volume filler. is this some kind of all-flash-no-substance metaphor, I wondered?
stranger still, El's cone is barely even filled to the rim in the first place. and "extra whipped cream" means probably most of the contents of that cone is whipped cream, not ice cream. is not Max's cone what a 1 scoop cone looks like? El could only have a half scoop at most? she must have asked for it to be that way, but why?
Steve doesn't announce this part out loud, but look at their cones. Max ordered a sugar cone, El ordered a waffle cone.
ha ha, El and waffles, yes, but keep going.
waffle.... whipped cream.... sprinkles... negligible amount of ice cream despite it being an ice cream cone. do you see what happened here?
Tumblr media
El walked into Scoops Ahoy, saw the words "waffle cone," and ordered an Eggo Extravaganza, not knowing that's not a thing.
Max and Steve had to help her reverse engineer what that meant, and it turned out that it didn't even involve ice cream. Steve was probably like "well, this is an ice cream place, don't you want a little ice cream in it? what do you want, like... vanilla?" and she was like, sure fine? Scoops likely didn't offer Hershey kisses, jelly beans, or Reese's Pieces as toppings, so sprinkles had to suffice.
so: Max asking if El wants to trade cones (not "let's trade" not "trade me" but "you wanna trade?") is actually a symbolically important detail!
El doesn't look unhappy with her order at all, but Max, aware now of the Eggo Extravaganza origins, wants to give El yet another opportunity to branch out and try something new, at Max's own personal loss.
it's another subtle shedding of Hopper and embracing of new things. and then she dumps Mike a minute later holding that cone. Not Hopper, not Mike, you! 🍦
Tumblr media
PS El did like strawberry and part of it is it reminds her of Max. she's wearing the strawberry festival shirt for the El / Max RUTH transition <3
