A​ major storm – named Winter Storm Elliott by The Weather Channel – could become a bomb cyclone over the Midwest later this week and bring blizzard conditions to parts of the Great Lakes as well as high winds to the East Coast, snarling travel in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday weekend.

We mentioned earlier that this winter storm could become a bomb cyclone.

A​s a rule of thumb, meteorologists refer to a strengthening low as "bombing out" or undergoing bombogenesis if its minimum surface pressure drops by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less, though how much a pressure drops depends on a storm's latitude.

Meteorologists frequently discuss pressure in terms of millibars, rather than inches of mercury. The lower the pressure in a storm, the more intense it is.

And the greater [the] difference in pressure over an area, the stronger the winds.

W​inter Storm Elliott has the potential to plunge to a pressure that could threaten December low-pressure records in the Great Lakes, according to data compiled by Weather Prediction Center meteorologist David Roth.  ...

Do whatever tf you want I guess but I WILL judge you hard if you're writing fanfic about Russia-Ukraine or Israel-Palestine, etc. You need to take a step back and think about what you're doing and how bizarre and uncomfortable it is to trivialize ongoing global conflicts and the suffering of millions so you can write an entertainment piece.

Quick update on significant pre-Christmas snowstorm, dangerous flash-freeze - mlive.com

All of the weather data continues to show a very large, high-wind storm system gelling over the Great Lakes region just before Christmas. Here’s a quick look at the timing. I also want to give you a look at the size of the storm.

A storm system is big in my meteorologist eyes when there are at least five closed circular pressure lines surrounding the storm center. The tightly packed pressure lines tell us the storm will have a strong circulation and strong wind gusts. A storm system with this strength of low pressure usually also generates heavy precipitation.

While the exact track of the center is not defined yet, we probably can accept the storm center track will come somewhere through Michigan or northern Indiana and northern Ohio. This storm track puts Michigan in the area of heavy precipitation.

Remember, we usually find the European Medium Range Weather Forecast Model (ECMWF) the most accurate, but not 100 percent accurate at four to five days out. Yes, that means we are talking about a nasty winter storm over Michigan and the Great Lakes region Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There could still even be lingering snow on Christmas.

We also look at NOAA’s main model at this farther-out timeframe. That model is called the GFS. It’s not really accurate six or seven days out. Now that the storm has gotten closer, the GFS is taking on the same big-storm look as the ECMWF.

...[Above are t]wo model forecasts of the surface weather at 7 AM this Friday, December 23. While the exact details are different, the general look of a heavy precipitation and a strong wind storm is very similar.

Since both models have us in the heart of the storm Friday, expect Thursday to be the start of the storm. Regardless of the exact amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain, and the timing of a roadway flash-freeze, moving travel plans to Tuesday or Wednesday would be a very wise idea. It will be much safer traveling before Thursday. [There] may [be] some Michigan travel that would be OK Thursday, but it’s not likely. You will be in a race against a flash-freeze on the road, and a changeover to heavy snow.

The ECMWF brings the storm center into Lower Michigan and wraps some above-freezing air in ahead of the storm. That’s the first ingredient needed for what I call a flash-freeze. I’ve seen a handful of flash-freezes, and they aren’t pretty. It’s raining and the interstates are wet. Then you notice brake lights just [one half mile] ahead. The cars slow to just a few miles an hour. This can all happen in just two minutes. You will be lucky if the traffic keeps moving at a crawl. Most of the time there is an accident and the interstate becomes a parking lot. The flash-freeze occurs when the temperature falls from 35 degrees to 25 degrees in just a few minutes. I will time the flash-freeze with more accuracy tomorrow through Thursday. Make sure to check here for updates this week.

Drive to your family Christmas destination on Tuesday or Wednesday.

This storm has the potential for a large area of heavy snow of 6 to 12 inches wherever the heaviest snow falls. This wouldn’t be just a thin band of lake-effect snow that you can quickly drive out of. This would be an “almost everyone” type of snow.

The storm’s pressure pattern shows it could produce gusts over 50 mph. Heavy snow and 50 mph gusts will register high on the Torregrossa Drifting Index (TDI).  ...
