All's Fair In Love & War- Nobunaga Ch. 18
Chapter 18
Jiro stood in the midst of the festival with Sato and the Oda warlords. The fireworks were going to be starting soon, when one of Ava’s men was running up to them. They were all instantly on alert as they noticed the rather distressed look on the young man’s face.
“What is it?” Jiro asked.
“A report…where are Lord Ava and Lord Nobunaga?” The young man asked.
“Probably somewhere enjoying the festival.” Sato answered. “What’s going on?”
“We received a report of some suspicious-looking men in black robes having entered the town.” The man answered. “At first we thought they might be remnants of Ebisu’s attempted coup, but they don’t seem like ronin…they seem more like mercenaries and there’s no way that Ebisu could afford to hire them. Ronin yes, but he didn’t have enough to pay mercenaries.”
“We can’t rule out that it’s some plot against Lord Nobunaga.” Hideyoshi was instantly concerned. Nobunaga was a man with a large force and had conquered so much…but that had also made him a lot of enemies.
“It would make sense.” Jiro said. “Attack him while he is away from home.”
“Does anyone know where they are?” Hideyoshi asked, ready to begin searching the entire festival for his lord.
“I know I saw them head for the food stalls earlier.” Sato answered.
“I caught sight of them at the games a while ago.” Masamune said.
Ranmaru was remaining silent and kept his head down. He was afraid if he spoke up…drew any attention to himself, they could see the conflict and torment in his eyes.
“Let’s split up and look in those locations then.” Hideyoshi said. “We’ll meet back here if we don’t find them.”
The group was then splitting up, searching the entire festival. Ranmaru only half-heartedly searched. He knew they wouldn’t find them anywhere they were looking for. He could feel his stomach churning with the guilt. How much more could he take? How could he save one master without betraying the other?
By the time everyone was meeting back up at the center of the town, the fireworks were beginning to be shot off. “No one found them?” Hideyoshi asked, looking around in disbelief.
“No.” Jiro answered, his face practically pale with worry.
“We’ve just got to think.” Sato said. “We’re all aware of what’s been going on between them.”
“You think they might have gone somewhere to be alone?” Masamune asked.
Sato nodded. “Yeah. They probably snuck off to some quiet and secluded place…”
“The river.” Jiro said.
Sato nodded. “Alright, let’s go there.”
“We have to hurry.” Hideyoshi declared, worry evident in his voice.
Jiro and Sato were then leading the way. They were all rushing to the river. Ranmaru bringing up the rear. I hope…we make it in time. He thought. I’m sorry Master Kennyo. I’m sorry Lord Nobunaga. I’m sorry Lord Ava!
Ava and Nobunaga…
Nobunaga and I ended our kiss after what felt like both a small eternity and all too soon. We were both panting for breath as we gazed into each other’s eyes. “Ava…I…” Nobunaga began before diving back in for another kiss.
My heart was singing and I felt like I was flying as we continued to kiss. Our bodies were pressed close. I could feel the heat building between us. He moved one hand from my waist to bring to the back of my head as I moved my arms to wrap around his waist. Never before had it felt so good to kiss someone and for him to kiss me back.
“Nobu…naga…” I murmured between kisses. Words just weren’t enough to communicate… and oh how I wanted more. Wanted to be closer to him.
We parted from our kiss once more, but continued to hold one another. “Ava…I have never felt like this before.” He said as he was leaning his forehead against mine.
“Me neither.” I replied. Sure, I had thought I had loved before…but it had never been like this. Despite how sullied both of our hands were…this love felt real and pure. Granted I wasn’t sure that Nobunaga would call it love. I don’t think he knew…but I know he cared for me as much as I did him. It was at this moment we both became aware of being watched.
We stayed in our embrace and lowered our voices. “Ava…I believe we will have to continue this another time…” He said with a sigh.
“Sadly, I think you are right.” I agreed, cursing whoever this was that was interrupting us.
We pulled from our embrace and rose from the bench. “If you’re going to attack, you may as well come out now.” Nobunaga declared, looking boldly into the treeline just behind us.
Shadowy figures began to emerge from the trees then. “And here I thought we would have the element of surprise, but then again I guess he wouldn’t be the Devil King if he got too distracted by a pretty face.”
Nobunaga was placing himself in front of me. “So, you are here for me.” He said, smiling.
“Yeah, our master would like your head. I think we’ll take the girl for ourselves though.” One of the men said.
I could tell that they were mercenaries. Paid by someone to come for Nobunaga apparently. I sighed and rolled my eyes. “Clearly you don’t know who you’re dealing with.”
The group of mercenaries were moving to encircle us. Swords at the ready. Nobunaga had a sword at his waist, carrying it despite being dressed not for battle. Though it’s not like I had room to talk. I had a blade concealed in my sleeves…as well as the hair stick in my hair having a rather sharp point.
“Well, a lady would have to be a bit of a spitfire to get the Devil’s attention.” One of the mercenaries said.
“Are you able to fight, Ava?” Nobunaga whispered to me as we pressed our backs to each other.
“Thanks for the concern, but I’m still good.” I replied.
The mercenaries were soon charging at us. We fought back to back, fighting off their blows as we did. I could feel my shoulder screaming at me, but the adrenaline pumping through me was enough that I could push through the pain. One of the mercenaries ended up swinging at me and I was barely able to redirect the blow. The tip of his sword ended up slicing down my leg… though all it did was create a slit in my yukata.
“Gee thanks, now I can move more freely.” I said, smirking at the man before delivering a kick to his gut.
“You fight with no conviction.” Nobunaga said to the mercenaries, as he knocked another one down.
“Whoever sent these guys must really want you, Nobunaga.” I said, as I quickly counted that there were about twenty men. “I mean…twenty mercenaries to come after you.”
Nobunaga chuckled. “They could send a hundred and it still wouldn’t be enough to stop me.” He replied. “Especially when I have…such a capable partner at my side.”
“Well, I do try.” I replied, as I fought off another attack. “Just too bad…they had to interrupt.”
“Yes, that is a shame.” Nobunaga replied. “But we’ll have to make that much quicker work of them.”
“What…how the hell? Are you two seriously flirting while fighting us?!” One of the mercenaries shouted in disbelief.
“Ugh! Die Nobunaga!” Another shouted as he charged at us.
I wished I would have had my usual sword instead of my more concealable short sword, but I still managed to fight them off. My shoulder was burning, but I fought on. I was having to exert more of my energy than I normally would. This was not the way I pictured having to use my energy for the night.
Eventually we managed to take them all down. The mercenaries were lying on the ground in various states of consciousness and groaning in pain. Nobunaga and I turned to face each other, both of us still panting. His hand came up to cup my cheek. “Are you alright, Ava?” He asked me.
I smiled at him. “Fine. You?” I asked, suddenly feeling breathless for a different reason. And honestly…looking into his eyes I could forget about the pain in my shoulder.
“I am unharmed.” Nobunaga answered.
“Good.” I replied, letting out a sigh of relief as I leaned into his touch. “Now…where were we before we were rudely interrupted?”
Nobunaga chuckled. “I believe we were here.” His lips were on mine once more.
Nobunaga’s lips were so warm, so soft, so delicious. The kiss was so warm and inviting, I could easily forget about my weariness and my shoulder. However our kiss was soon being interrupted once again.
“My lords!”
Nobunaga and I broke our kiss, turning to see Jiro, Sato, Hideyoshi, Masamune, and Ranmaru all running up to us. Jiro and Hideyoshi both looked almost haggard as if they had been frantically searching for us. Behind them I noticed a few of other of my men coming as well.
Sato and Masamune both looked like they were about ready to burst out laughing. “You appear to have been looking for us?” Nobunaga asked.
“We got a report about mercenaries sneaking into the town.” Jiro answered. “But it appears you were able to take them down…”
“And then have some fun.” Sato said, grinning at me.
“Hehe, only you two could manage to take down what twenty guys and then take the time to kiss in the middle of it.” Masamune said.
I could feel my cheeks heating up. They could pretend they didn’t see anything, but no, they HAD to get in some teasing. “Just tie them up and take them to the dungeons for questioning.” I said, as I moved to put my short sword away once again.
Nobunaga was putting away his own sword. “Yes, we need to find out who sent them.” He agreed.
Hideyoshi was letting out an awkward cough and I noticed his cheeks were a bit red. “Yes and we should probably get back to the castle.” He said. “Before anyone sees.”
“Sees what?” I asked, feeling confused, though I noticed Hideyoshi wouldn’t quite look at me.
Sato was laughing. “I think he is referring to the state of your yukata, my lord.” She said. “Though I do have to wonder, was that from the fight or were you and Lord Nobunaga about to…”
I moved, clapping my hand over her mouth. “Not one more word.” I replied. “And if you must know it was from the fight. Though it was an accident it did make it easier to move so it worked out.”
Sato giggled behind my hand before backing away. “Yes, my lord.”
We all got the mercenaries tied up and my men were taking them to the dungeon. That was when Sato and Jiro were both giving me a look. “I think we need to get you back to the doctor, my lord.” Jiro said.
I had to admit now that the adrenaline from the fight was wearing off and I didn’t have Nobunaga’s kiss to distract me, I could feel my shoulder burning like it had when the wound was freshly made.
Nobunaga was looking at me, his carnelian eyes taking in my appearance. “Your wound has reopened.”
I looked and sure enough there was red blooming on my shoulder. “Well, that explains the burning.” I muttered, the pain and lack of actual rest starting to catch up to me. I could feel myself starting to feel unsteady on my feet.
Nobunaga’s arm was around my waist. “I have you.” He whispered in my ear. “Come, let’s get you back to the castle.”
When we returned to the castle, Nobunaga helped me to the doctor once more. I was patched back up and a fresh poultice and bandage were put on the wound. The doctor had shooed everyone out of the room while patching me up. “You really must take your health more seriously, my lord.” The doctor told me.
“When someone attacks, I kind of have to defend myself and my allies.” I replied. And the man I love.
The doctor sighed. “You need to rest, my lord.” He told me.
“Thank you for patching me up and for the advice, but I am fine.” I replied, slipping on a fresh robe once he had finished. I then rose from the cot. “I will take your advice into consideration.”
The doctor sighed as I made my way to the door. The others were all in the hall. “Are you alright, my lord?” Sato asked.
“Just fine. All patched up.” I answered. “Now do we have any idea who those mercenaries were working for? Or how they got in and why no one who spotted them sneaking in stopped them?”
One of my men was kneeling. “I am sorry, my lord. With all of the new merchants and vendors coming for the festival…we let them slip past.”
Another of my men was kneeling. “Had we known, we would have stopped them. Our slow actions put you and Lord Nobunaga in danger. We shall repent with our lives.”
I sighed as I smacked them. “Why are you all always so dramatic? How many times must I tell you to stop this nonsense of paying for every little mistake with your lives?”
“Ava is right. It will take more than a handful of mercenaries fighting with no conviction and no honor to cause us harm.” Nobunaga spoke. “It would be a waste to throw your lives away instead of learning from your mistakes.”
“Yes, thank you my lords!”
I dismissed them and then we were all convening in the audience hall to discuss the events of the evening. Nobunaga was sending Ranmaru back to Azuchi to report and set Mitsuhide on investigating this attack. I sent some of my scouts out to investigate as well. Perhaps whoever hired the mercenaries was still in the area.
We held council well into the night before we were all heading to rest for the night. Nobunaga was following me to my room. “Did you want to continue where we left off by the river?” I asked, looking at him once we were in my room.
Nobunaga smiled at me as he pulled me into his arms. “I would enjoy it.” He replied, pressing a kiss to my lips. “You feel the same way as I do?” He asked.
I nodded. “Yes…you consume my thoughts just as I consume yours…and you’ve stolen my heart even before I realized it.”
“I don’t even know how…but you are a greater conqueror than I. You conquered my heart.” He was then capturing my lips in a heated kiss once more.
We were soon sinking to the floor together, our bodies pressed close. I felt his hand come to the back of my head, fingers gripping my hair before he gently tugged. His lips moved from mine as my head moved at his will, but I didn’t have to miss his lips for long as they came to my neck. He gave me little nips with his teeth before his tongue would slip out and run soothingly over the area his teeth had just grazed.
“Mmm…Nobu…naga…” I moaned at the feeling of his stinging kisses. The heat between us was only growing.
“Ava…I want you…” Nobunaga whispered into my ear.
“I…want you, too…Nobunaga…” I replied, lifting my hand to stroke the bare part of his chest.
Nobunaga was moving, gently pushing me back on the tatami mat floor, his body slinking over mine. His hand snaked up my body as his lips descended on mine, tugging at the ties of my robe. I found myself moving my hands inside his robes, pushing until I had his top half bare.
Nobunaga had my night robes open and he pulled back to look at me, smiling until his eyes took in the sight of my bandaged shoulder. His movements stopped.
“Nobunaga…”
“Ava…perhaps we should wait until you are more fully recovered.” He said.
“I’m fine.” I countered.
“You just reopened your wound.” Nobunaga replied.
“And it’s just been patched back up.”
“What about the pain?”
“Pretty sure you’d have me feeling good enough I wouldn’t notice it.” I replied. “Just your kisses are pretty intoxicating.”
Nobunaga chuckled before kissing me gently on the forehead. “While that is tempting… I want you to be recovered. Then I will spend all night lavishing you in affection and wringing our countless cries of pleasure from your beautiful lips.”
I felt a shiver run down my spine at just the thought of that. “Well…that does seem fair.” I replied. “Plus if I am more recovered, I can return the favor.”
“I look forward to it.” Nobunaga replied.
“But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t indulge just a little now…or that you shouldn’t stay with me tonight.” I said, giving him a coy smile.
“I fully intended to stay.” Nobunaga replied. “And indulging in your kisses won’t hurt.”
Our lips were meeting once again. Neither of us had spoken the words, but we didn’t need them. We communicated our feelings for each other in the heated kisses we shared. Though we didn’t make love that night, we shared a different intimacy, indulging in kisses and caresses before crawling into bed and falling asleep in each other’s embrace.

Showtime at Otsuru’s Okobore Teahouse
🎵 “A desert road, from Vegas to nowhere, but someplace better than where I’ve been... 🎵
Spider’s Cafe, where the Baroque Works Officers meet in Alabasta, was inspired by a 1988 film pictured above. Bagdad Cafe. We know this from the Vol.20 SBS. At the time, Oda laments it really isn’t the type of story that jives with manga so he kept it to a more simple design homage. Captured a little of the magic with their cover serial’s finale and the initial scene of the officer agents trickling in. His particular note was the “austere elegance” and tone. Having seen the movie, and being no stranger to the Southwestern US, I get what he means. Imagine you’re flying somehwere alone. You have to change planes, the layover turns into a delay. For the near future...you’re nobody. There’s a certain freedom in that, isn’t there? Especially when you’re not in a good place, moments like that can really lay things bare. That’s the point of this movie, how much that pause can change you.
My pitch here is going to be that by the time we got to Wano, he figured out a way to capture this and did so through Tsuru’s Teahouse. Mind you, going in I was looking for other little nods for our 12 Days of Miss Merrychristmas spectacular. Somewhere along the way I realized where I was recognizing the vibe from. This will be a bit of a long one, but I hope you give it a shot. Oda’s always been a big film buff who slips a lot of homages in. He gushed about this movie in the SBS question. For good reason.
Here’s one of those little shared motifs that make me think I have something. I’m not just randomly using a still from the film, this shit with the binoculars is exactly the same as it is in the movie. That guy’s Sal, one of the main women’s husband. He spends the bulk of the movie observing from afar, commenting through his binoculars like some Greek chorus. Just like the Heart Pirates here. One of those cool bits about Okobore/Bakura is that fate like, forces that story to go unimpeded.
Then take that idea we’ve touched on with the Tsuru/Kiku/Tama trio, the notion they're kinda the same woman at different stages of life. It's filtered through being part of a larger work than the self-contained focus, but that’s a core thread of Bagdad Cafe. Now add the fact all three are introduced fleeing a man trying to take advantage of them. The movie is all about two women breaking from their husband and finding a certain magic in leaning on each other, trying to make something more of the desolate truck stop. A lot of the driving force was the German tourist Yasmin appreciating the temporary break. Ultimately in the end she comes back, establishing the Bagdad Cafe as one of the swinginest lil spots in the Mojave.
This is how the movie ends. The journey and tone matter more anyways. Yasmin is back to stay for good, the rundown cafe is an oasis in the desert (hi Yuba!). A swinging show, everyone’s using their talents and so much happier. It’s not like a whole lot is better, it’s still a rather poor and desolate town. But that cheery cafe makes all the difference. Brings people together and makes the community feel a little more special. And it makes me think of that “pillars of the community” theme we had all Wano. Yasu in Ebisu, Tsuru/Kiku in Okobore, Toki in the past, & Marco on Sphinx. But also like...I love this idea that Okobore/Bakura are this micro-show before we get into the giant sweeping samurai epic. One that has some themes that weave in and out of the rest, but others that won’t flare up until after. For some reason, we start by introducing a couple of core characters coming out of this kind of environment. Being called to play their part.
I’ve said this about Kiku before, it feels like her story is out of order. Okobore sorta suits her as a nice reprieve. She seemed like one of the few people genuinely at ease in the “outsider” towns. Just by being her earnest, quirky self. So to take that, mix it in with this neat film reference, and use it as an intro to the arc? It makes me think about the narrative reason for stripping Luffy of all the buildup to this arc. Fate forced him to stumble into this side story, only picking up Zoro along the way who’d need to repeat with it spelled out more. Meanwhile Luffy’s story will blaze ahead into a big unanticipated victory with these new girls as the rest of the crew catches up by building their own connections.
I know it’s a small ripple, but I’m over here geeking out about it! The movie is adorable and yeah, even when I wasn’t really looking for it I saw major Teahouse Trio vibes. So, way to go Oda! You cracked the code, it did work as a way of introducing someone. Just like Baroque Works, but here it feels like it helps me understand the intention. An intention that tracks with how I was already wondering.

#ONEPIECE1048
Chapter title: 20 Years
This chapter was definitely an emotional one, I cried, you cried, the whole world cried.
For the frontpage of this chapter we're still on wholecake island, and it looks like the germa 66 guys are still trying to infiltrare chocolat town? So are they the figures shown on the last page? Hm... it didn't look like them...
Anyways,
Luffy just told Momonosuke to move onigashima out of the way so he could punch the shit out of Kaido and put an end to him, which Momonosuke is, of course, still struggling with...
Luffy is ready to punch Kaido with a fist as big as an entire island, and more than five times as big as Kaido himself and instead of moving out of the way or dodging the attack, Kaido's pride is on the line as a Yonko of the seas, and so he says
"Very well, I'll take this attack head on."
"Did you know strawhat, this country's 'hero' was burned to death 20 years ago"
And just like he burned Oden to death, he transforms into another dragon form, much bigger than his usual form, the Flaming drum dragon.
And he's planning on "vaporizing" Luffy's fist...
But because of Luffy's conqueror's coating, he can attack Kaido without touching him - he uses an attack called the 'Bajrang Gun'
Bajrang is a reference to the Hindu god, Hinuman- a divine monkey god (AND!! I JUST READ -- Bajrang is the son of the wind god - and we've always speculated that Dragon has some sort of fruit connected to the weather, storm or wind!! Maybe he has the powers of the Wind-Wind fruit, or even an actual Wind God fruit?)
This chapter also just solidifies what an absolute piece of shit person Orochi is, truly one of the most despicable villains of one piece...
AND
you can't tell me this doesn't look like Zoro- like how is this not Zoro's dad? or related lmao
Him and the rest of the Daimyo's of Wano faced off against Kaido and refused to view Orochi as the shogun - hence him being captured!! Oh well... we'll see what happens.
And again... these flashbacks are just proving how awful Orochi and Kaido both are, making them even more evil. This above panel was so tragic, a mother looking for food carrying a crying baby on her back.
Let's have the rest of the Ebisu town follow suit. Their bellies will stay empty and their loved ones will continue to keel over... but they won't be able to do anything except grin brightly!! They'll never stop laughing.
And this piece of shit Orochi is still tormening Hiyori, he has a million lives I swear... but then !!
!!!!!!! WHAT DID I SAYYYYY WHAT DID I SAY WAS GOING TO HAPPEN??? DID I NOT SAY DENJIRO WAS TOO QUIET?? THAT HE WASN'T SHOWN ENOUGH?? THAT HE HAD TO DO SOMETHING``??? I KNEW HE WOULD I KNEW HE WOULD AND GOOD!! GOD IT'S SO GOOD THAT HE WAS THE ONE TO KILL (??) OROCHI AFTER HAVING TO SPEND 20 YEARS AT HIS SERVICE AND PRETENDING TO BE WITH HIM DENJIRO I LOVE YOU YOURE AMAZING YOU DESERVED THIS
AND AS HE'S DOING THIS A LANTERN SAYING "PLEASE MAKE OROCHI DISAPPEAR" FLOATING UP IN THE SKY? I SERIOUSLY CRIED SERIOUSLY
Another one... Free us from this hell. and Give me a sip of clear wate. This is so tragic, and people like saying there's no stake to this war. There are no stakes? Not the people starved for food and water? Not the people locked up and forced to labour for Kaido and Orochi? They're not stakes to this war?
And that's where we end it. Luffy still about to punch Kaido, The present hears the cries of the past. Will this be the end of Kaido? Will he have another trick up his sleeve? Awakening? His past? A flashback? Who knows, no break next week!!
