no idea if i'll ever draw more but my roommate and i did actually make a full list!! most of which we tried to keep in mind the fact they'd evolve throughout the series (like the main trio)

Once, Izaya read an article about 40 000 years old flute pieces found at Hohle Fels in Germany, carved from the hollow wing bone of a vulture, and he laughed, spinning in his chair until the whole world was a blur, imagining himself carving the city’s bones in a similar way, for someone else to breathe into, waiting for the song of it.

The article suggested that music might have been the strategic advantage then-humans had over later extinct Neanderthals, and it made sense to Izaya, that bones could be weapons.

Finally finished this thing that’s been waiting in my wip folder for months now. A small tribute to lie me to sleep by @onewhodiedyoung. Thanks for rewriting my entire dna

28. what do they do when they're away from each other: (miss each other a lot) they do have to spend a LOT of time separated due to their jobs. ruri going on tour, or kasuka having to shoot a film overseas, but i think they deal with the distance by facetiming and calling each other a lot. kasuka wanders around the places he's working at and takes mental notes on where to take ruri for vacation once they both have some free time.

29. one headcanon about this otp that breaks your heart?: okay i KNOOOOW i talk about vampire ruri a lot, let me be me. Anyways, the idea of mortal x immortal is a fucking insane dynamic. i can't even dive into it. ruri thinks a lot about Death, and a lot about how her female relatives ended up leaving their families and running away. She fears Something will lead her to do the same thing in the end. She fears that after all, she won't be able to break the cycle, and ruin will follow her for eternity. And she won't be strong enough to bring kasuka into that

man ive said it before but it's soo specifically weird to like, love only one character in a show and just have everyone else feel like a cardboard box. Yes I'm talking about durarara.

Because! 7 years later and I've tried but I still don't even really like the show at all or care about more than a handful of characters! But Izaya has such a chokehold on my psyche I wish I could just pluck him outta there and put him up on my shelf or smth.

IM SO SORRY I FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS GJKGD

I wanted to type up this like, long heartfelt post because these two make me insane in the membrane. I love them platonic and romantic both because either way at the core of their relationship there is a tragedy of two people who could've been inseparable, and then separated.

And I think it's a TRAVESTY that they didn't animate the breakdown Izaya had at the thought of Shinra dropping him. It makes the scene where Shinra waxes poetic about Izaya being fragile in the last arc make sense the way it just doesn't in the anime.

I dont think anything speaks on my thoughts better than my Actual thoughts during my last Durarara phase so! Have the raw screenshots :] ft. Friends

Unpopular opinion but i kinda think that shizuo has a pretty healthy attachment style.

Izaya on the other hand is a whole mess

Interesting!

I’m inclined to lean in a similar direction, however I do think that Shizuo definitely does have his issues when it comes to attachment.

The guy definitely has stable relationships, unlike Izaya, so I gotta give him that. But I think he has trouble accepting affection because he constantly feels like people are afraid of him, or rather that they should be afraid of him (which might contribute to why he gets along so well with Celty, since she’s not exactly human). He’s scared that one day, the people around him will wake up and realize that he’s a monster, too dangerous to be around.

I do see him having aspects of a secure attachment style too though, at least more than Izaya. Again, Celty, who literally has absolutely no reason to fear him, is someone he has a perfectly healthy friendship with. They can mutually rely on each other, find support in each other, and just enjoy being together.

I don’t know if I can fit him into a box, but if I had to chose, I think he primarily has a disorganized attachment style? But a lot of potential to develop an overall secure attachment style.

Though I do think that post-ketsu he did kind of move backwards and his worries of being a monster increased because of the fight with Izaya… but no need to go over that again

Izaya though… needs a post dedicated all to himself. Phew.

What is Izaya’s relationship with Namie? Can it improve?

In book 3, which I'm currently reading, Izaya and Namie are not yet very close, but they are in the process of building real trust towards one another.

Namie is still scared of Izaya, and she's not wrong to be! Izaya is a very powerful individual at a very young age. He has the capacity to do things most people wouldn't, and probably shouldn't. Her life is literally in his hands; he knows everything about her and her situation, and her greatest asset and trump card (Celty's head) is in Izaya's possession.

But Izaya never abuses that power. He keeps his promise perfectly; he arranges hotels and eventually whole apartments for Namie, keeps her moving and off anyone's radar, and pays her incredibly, ridiculously well even after all that. Thus Izaya proves to her that he's reliable and remarkably trust worthy... So long as you're on his side.

On top of that she'll eventually start seeing more and more of who he actually is. And Izaya is a lot of things, but the side Namie gets to see, working so closely with him is very different from the seemingly cold and careless asshole act that a lot of the other characters see. She gets to know a guy who's defined mainly by his intelligence, who is full of childish curiosity and excitement, and who is deeply hurt by the rejection he faces from just about everyone.

Jealousy and anger aren't good traits, but Namie finds herself in a position from which she can see their cause; and she can understand it. At first she refuses to feel sorry for him, still convinced he deserves it. She never really gets past that opinion; after all Izaya did make his own choices leading to this situation; but she can see the rift between who he is and what he pretends to be. Namie is one of the few characters (the others being Mikage, possibly Kine and Shinra) who actually understands that Izaya genuinely cares for the people he plays with. Between that and the slow transition from fear into respect, she comes to care for him, even if she'd probably never admit it out loud.

On Izaya's side, something similar happens. From the start, he sees Namie as a highly skilled, intelligent and capable woman, with her love for her brother being her one big flaw (which he does find pretty creepy). He probably figures such a flaw makes her easy to manipulate, but in reality, all he actually does with it is tease her. He seems to actually hold out on info regarding her brother, almost as if he's trying to encourage her to let go of that madness. But on the other hand, he can't help but admire her single minded devotion when she doesn't, and continues to chase her little brother.

At the same time she proves to be an invaluable asset to him. Namie is capable, professional and adaptable, she can do her job without letting feelings get in the way, and she becomes somebody that Izaya can actively rely on. Which is not something he's used to, and it certainly puts her in a special position, especially combined with the sheer amount of time they spend together. Especially when she starts occasionally giving in to his more domestic demands, I can't help but think she's found a special place in his little heart. Izaya isn't used to being cared for, and sometimes... That's just what Namie does.

Unfortunately Namie does in the end get caught up in a mess as she goes after Mika, leaving Izaya behind, but this may have been planned or agreed to, because Izaya does not appear to feel betrayed. In fact Namie is one of the extremely few people that he actually contacts after his disappearance, and tells about his work in Kanto; which implies both an incredible amount of trust (by his standards) and a strong bond.

I think at the end of the series, Namie is Izaya's real best friend, despite him still only naming Shinra as such.

I'd say there's absolutely a possibility that they were more than friends, but even then I can't see their feelings as being especially romantic in nature. They're definitely not in love, but I can see them in a relationship of convenience and comfort.

I love how the anime gives us a Shizuo montage episode and post-puberty Shizuo wears only one article of clothing outside of his school and work uniforms and it's a baggy shirt. Almost as if he chooses to wear baggy clothing to hide his frame, almost as if his brother gifted him a whole ass wardrobe of layered clothes tailor-fitted to give him gender euphoria which he then proceeds to wear that and only that in public for years. Cis Shizuo just removes a part of the depth behind these actions and for whaaaaaatt

I also subscribe to the belief that Shinra gave him top surgery right before high school after Tom slowly opened him up to the idea that altering parts of your body isn't actually disrespectful to your parents and can help you and others in many ways.

Once again cis Shizuo interpretations just erase depth tbh

And I WILL stick by it being an interpretation until Narita gives us hard evidence to the contrary because nothing in canon confirms he's cis. Dude doesn't scar from anything, has connections to underground doctors for discreet gender-affirming care, and has a girly nickname from childhood with no clear explanation why his classmate would refer to him like that.

(sidenote: interesting for the ova to only show Shizuo once without his blazer or with a shirt loose enough to show that he doesn't have a binder on be when his chest is completely obscured. I see you, I see your binder chest.)
