meet the writer: aj

(a.k.a. my writeblr intro, done properly)

heya!! i’ve had this blog for a while now, but i realised i haven’t ever actually done a proper intro on here, so here it is!! (also did i want the opportunity to make an aesthetic of myself??? absolutely. image made in canva and portrait on the left is from picrew, all other images were taken from unsplash)

my name is aj (she/her pronouns pls)!! i’m 26, black, and i live in the uk. i graduated from uni 3 years ago and currently work in lab admin, but i’ve been doing creative writing for 10+ years!! i’m currently trying to get back into reading by reading a book a month (i usually share the book i’m reading in the sidebar of my main blog, which i follow back with as this blog is a sideblog: @andipxndy), and i write a variety of fanfiction and original works (both based off my own characters and those i currently/have rp’d with in the past). i also take requests for fanfiction, which you can read about below the cut or in this post (i’ve made some changes which mean the post is not relevant atm)!! but in general i love being asked questions about my WIPs and my characters and basically any characters i write, because i love delving into character thoughts and doing character development (so please send me some!!).

this blog started off as a way for me to share my fanfiction writing, which is how i got into writing in the first place and how i came to love it, but now i’m wanting to expand some more share/talk about some of my original works too!! i write ya sci-fi in my original stuff, but i’m known to drift into romance, action-comedy and crime when it comes to fanfiction works. i’m also over on ao3 as andipxndy.

my main fanfic writing fandoms are abbott elementary and alex rider, just to keep things managable, but i also enjoy watching ncis, criminal minds and lockwood & co., and sometimes dive back into old favourite animes (k-on!! is my current anime obsession). i may be slow to write or respond to stuff but i DO enjoy diving into discussing fandom stuff too!! i also like playing video games like sims 4 (ea is a money grab pass it on) and cities skylines, and enjoy dnd and rping with friends!!

before this intro gets too long, here are my main WIPs:

power play (1st draft completed, left to stew)

the first original wip i planned, the story is intended to be part of a 5-book series about a 20-year-old who accidentally gives himself powers, and ends up drawn into the science underground whilst trying to save people that he may or may not have also accidentally given powers. and all whilst trying to appear completely normal to his mum and get a summer job whilst home from university.

the crossover (still working on 1st draft, is my main/november nano project)

this is an adaptation of an old rp au i had with one of my closest friends, adjusted to have new, original characters despite the same plotline. it follows a 17-year-old girl as she’s accidentally transported into a parallel universe, where her parents aren’t her parents and she doesn’t exist. in an attempt to get home, she ends up crossing paths with the people who are meant to be her family, and finds out that they’re all superheroes. insert drama and shenanigans here.

the rich life: a modern bourgeoise au (working on 1st draft, is my camp nano project)

a passion project that i’m completing for my rp partners, this au is split into a 3-book series following the lives of our characters in the upper class, those who work for them, and eventually their children, going through the drama of their lives and how they try so hard not to have it all end up in the press. that obviously doesn’t work.

fanfiction fics and requests (ongoing but this is technically a wip)

technically counts as a wip as i have a backlog of fics in progress to write and share for requesters (and some ideas i’ve had myself), but these are mainly either alex rider or abbott elementary fanfics that have been sent in via ask. you can see extra info below the cut after the next paragraph. my requests are currently closed, and i’m working through my backlog. the request(s) active for the forseeable future are:

anyway, this is all i’ve got for now!! i do take part in things like nanowrimo and camp nanowrimo, so if anyone takes part in those too i look forward to writing alongside you!! other than that, that’s about it!! i’ll be sharing snippets of my work, and maybe eventually you’ll even get aesthetics eventually!! i’ve you’ve read this far, i applaud you, but thank you so much for reading!! i’d love to get to know more writers on here, both inside and outside of fandom spaces, so please feel free to jump at me and send me asks and messages and stuff!!

Truly, when it comes to player characters I have too many. Rather than one "canon" world state I have an ever-growing pile of them, which I sit atop like a dragon on its treasure hoard.

So today I think I'll take this as an excuse opportunity to talk about Noble Hearts, even though I don't currently have any fic written for any of them. Generally for each world state I pick a theme, and each character is a variation on it, so the theme of this one is nobility.

Brenna Aeducan

How it started:

How it's going:

Brenna Aeducan starts out in full Noble Asshole mode, does not speak to commoners, etc. Over the course of her journey, she falls in love with Alistair, puts him on the throne, and sacrifices herself to kill the archdemon.

Her arc is about learning the true meaning of nobility. It's a journey from Lawful Evil to Lawful Good.

Favorite Brenna moments:

She puts Bhelan on the throne.

Bhelan, you outplayed me. You won. I will not allow House Aeducan to fall simply to spite you. I will see you on the throne. But never forget who put you there.

Connor dies. Brenna knows nothing about magic. She takes the Knight-Commander at his word when he says the Circle is lost. She accidentally reveals Morrigan as an apostate and Wynne attacks them, forcing Brenna to kill her and leaving her no further reason to consider sparing the mages. So when they subsequently go to Redcliffe, there is no third option, and she's not about to do a blood magic ritual, so the child has to die. (This ends up being a very rough patch in her relationship with Alistair.)

Favorite romance moment: When she realizes that Alistair's destiny is to rule his people, and she will never be his queen... and puts him on the throne anyway. And Alistair's goodbye in Denerim, where he knows damn well what she's about to do: "I won't forget you. I'll make sure they don't forget you."

The Warden for Awakening is also a dwarf, Devari Kader, who was born casteless before leaving and becoming a Grey Warden. She finds it absolutely bonkers to be not only a noble but a noble ruling humans. Also baffled by the fact that everyone keeps calling her "Orlesian."

Emilia Hawke

The one I call Terrible Hawke (affectionate and derogatory).

How it started:

How it's going:

Emilia Hawke starts out protective of her little sister, though maybe with a bit of resentment brewing under the surface. She loses Bethany in the Deep Roads. Over the course of her arc she slides toward more and more extreme pro-templar behavior until Leandra's murder just sends her completely off the rails. By Act III she is a full-on anti-mage fanatic who believes that magic is a curse and it was a blessing from the Maker that he called Bethany back to his side before she could fall to corruption.

Emilia was an exercise in "Let's make a Hawke who sides with the templars at the end and fully believes they're doing the right thing."

If you ask her, she's Lawful Good. (I'd call her Lawful Evil, lol.)

Favorite Emilia moments:

Bethany's death truly is the beginning of her long downward spiral, because she really did love her sister. With Bethany gone, over time her memory in Emilia's mind is twisted into an idealized portrait of the "Good Mage." One who was meek and righteous (neither of which accurately describe who Bethany really was), never gave into temptation, and most importantly, died young and pure. That distorted image of Bethany helps her rationalize things later that Bethany would never have approved of, without ever admitting to herself how deeply she has dishonored her sister's memory.

Romance: She romances Sebastian and ends up taking those Chantry vows with him. They're a chaste and devout religious power couple who enable some of each other's worst traits and mutually cockblock each other so hard (Emilia constantly encourages him to keep his Chantry vows despite clearly wanting to bang him) I have to say that both of them on some level get off on denying each other and themselves. They deserve each other. 💙

Incidentally in addition to taking Chantry vows, Emilia has the Templar specialization. Which means that for a brief time, Kirkwall has a Viscount who is an actual Chantry Sister and "unofficial" templar. Love that for them.

Theodore Trevelyan

How it started:

How it's going:

Theo is "the spare" of his family, and he knows it. So when this "Herald of Andraste" thing drops in his lap, he seizes it with both hands. Why yes, I am the Chosen One! Thank you for asking!

And he wants so badly to believe it.

Alignment: Lawful Stupid. Would in theory like to be Good but is completely unpracticed at any kind of complex moral reasoning.

Favorite Theo moments:

His confidence takes its first big hit at Halamshiral, where he makes a fantastic cock-up of it and ends up with Gaspard as Emperor not by choice but because he can't make a decision and just stands there gawping while his people are waiting for orders, and Celene gets stabbinated in front of him. And then everyone praises him and acted like he made this happen on purpose. He does not walk away feeling good about this.

And then the Fade is like "Yeah you weren't saved by Andraste lol."

Incidentally, Emilia's anti-mage fanaticism unnerves even bland milquetoast pro-templar Theo to the point that it contributes to him leaving her in the Fade, even though he feels really guilty about it because of Varric.

Also a big fan of the scene where he gets yelled at by Solas, who is deeply unimpressed with him.

Romance: He falls hard for Cassandra, which really makes things awkward when he starts to doubt his Chosen-ness because deep down he knows there's nothing else remarkable about him and he's not handsome or charming enough to get by on that alone, and what if she only ever liked him because she thought he was chosen by the Maker?

Probably his greatest moment of character growth is when he learns that Cassandra is a candidate for Divine, and realizes that if he supports her, he's probably going to lose her. And he decides to support her anyway because he loves her and can't stand in the way of her calling if it's the Maker's will.

I've been really into some of my own OCs lately, so here's some Willas and a Sam! I've been using them as subjects while experimenting with some more complex marker rendering, and it's really rather fun to have some more proper drawings of these guys.

Willa, I've talked about a few times before - she's a character who originated as a mashup of two of my favourite soldier characters (Generals Ironwood and Armstrong, from RWBY and FMA respectively), and has since grown into very much her own person who I'm very fond of. She's the classic exhausted leader type who exists to be a side character in someone else's story but, as a middle-aged butch aroace woman in a society that doesn't value any of those traits very highly, she's sick fed up of being side-lined and Not Going To Take It Anymore. I love her, she's exhausted and cranky and stuck leading the fight in a war for survival that she's pretty sure can't be won by someone like her, but she's going to burn herself to the ground trying anyway.

The two drawings I did of her were mainly to figure out her face properly, and I ended up with one dramatic pose and one that's supposed to have the vibe of an official portrait. I always have far too much fun drawing wrinkles on faces, and I've recently discovered how fun it is to include details like freckles and red patches on skin with coloured pencil. I also experimented with inking some of the lines in colours other than black, and it's a subtle effect but I rather like it.

The fellow with the ginger hair is Sam, otherwise known as Dr Hargrave, and he's a supporting character in Willa's story as the chief medical officer at the wall fort she commands in the frozen north of their country (which is very loosely science-fantasy!Scotland), and also the closest thing she has to a best friend. If you've followed me for a while, he might look a bit familiar, and that's because Sam actually originated as Sammarion Harnendil, my half-elf life cleric DnD character, who I've drawn a bunch of times before. This version of Sam is slightly different (he's fully human, for one, although he still has big ears), but on a personality level he's exactly the same, which makes him cheerful, friendly, dad-joke-making and deeply devoted to being a doctor and helping people. Translating Sam's DnD stuff over into a different setting was actually what helped me pin down the nature of the magitech in this setting, and that magitech is the reason that Sam looks like he does despite being practically the same age as Willa. He's got some complicated accidental immortality going on, it's fun.

That drawing of him came about because of a screencap that I rather liked of one of the characters he's based on (Dr Harry Cunningham from Silent Witness), and I had a lot of fun drawing the folds and creases in his jumper. Sam's also the reason I've ended up so fond of adding pencil details to faces, ever since I decided he ought to have freckles when I was first designing him. I'm really pleased with how he turned out, especially since that's the first full colour drawing I've done of this version of the guy, and my first time drawing his face from that angle.

I think i've followed you for half a decade, now; maybe more. Probably more — i'm here since your Dishonored arts.

And — your art; your genuine excitement over things; your answers to all these ask, always friendly, always so open — it all remains a source of joy.

You also managed to become one of the reasons i started to play DnD and, later, TTRPGs in general; one of the reasons i became invested in devils and bonded over them with my current partner; one of the reasons i started to play Avernus (the other was the fact that me and my partner had a fallen aasimar hexblade and tiefling cleric/follower/warlock/paladin of Asmodeus as characters).

Also the reason i made peace with Regis' in-game design.

So, thanks. A lot. For everything.

Dalle-2 D&D Guide: Goblins - Part 1 of 3

This is a first in a series of guides on how to generate fantasy characters using Dall-e. This is new tech that can create useful art. It can take the ideas in your head and bring them to life! However, it is not cheap. This is a tool more like photoshop. It's FOR artists. It's not a thing to bypass them. A good understanding of art and post processing techniques will go a long way!

To the DMs who just want to make one-off character portraits:

My hope is that this guide will help you get where you want without spending too much money.

Why start with goblins?

You might ask: austinitic_steel, why start with goblins? Aren't there cooler monsters to go with?

The answer is these are creatures mostly associated with fantasy that dall-e happens to know of. Starting with humans, or dwarves or elves would be too easy because dall-e is already good at human looking things. My feeling is that goblins are going to be the most telling for most of the fantasy prompts. Also...goblins are the classic creature to see first on a fantasy adventure. It's fitting that we put them first!!

Prompt structure in this guide:

Throughout this guide we will be going over best practices for the following general prompt structure:

a goblin, [wearing], [holding], [portrait shot/medium-close shot], [artist],[flavor],[art style],[quality]

Note that the goblin is not doing anything and we haven't specified anything about hair color or other distinguishing characteristics. This is because we're trying to be simple for now. We just want to build any given goblin and see how things like artist, flavor and art style affect the prompt.

My hope is thatThis guide will inform how we treat other creatures in the dnd verse.

Let's begin :)

0. Dall-e cares about context:

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot"

Dall-e interprets context from your text. If there's not enough context dall-e will give you a load of random for it's own reasons. Note that as of today I have no idea why it would give me two monkeys here. However, if we specify that the goblin is a man-made artistic creation, then suddenly we're in business.

1. The Art Style

First thing's first: the art style is an important part of the context of a prompt. Goblins do not typically exist as, for example, oil paintings. We will be going over the following:

1.1 Oil painting

1.2 digital art

1.3 fantasy illustration

1.4 matte painting

1.1 ---- Oil Painting

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, oil painting"

Most of these (aside from the far right) look nothing like the goblins we're interested in. We need to use medium prompts that are more closely associated with fantastical creatures: "digital art, fantasy illustration, and matte painting"

1.2 ---- Digital Art

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, digital art"

These ALL look like goblins to me. 100% what I Was thinking of. Dall-e is a little off with the color for digital art. Possibly because people get way more creative with digital art colors?

1.3 ---- Fantasy Illustration

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, fantasy illustration"

These are pretty darn handsome goblins. 10/10 would date the far right. Not quite what we're looking for, but fantasy illustration definitely has some of the qualities we want.

1.4 ---- Matte Painting

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, matte painting"

This is honestly pretty damn good too. The third one is a little too classical fantasy for my liking though. Also #2 and #4 look a little human and I'm worried this means dall-e was trained on too many matte paintings of human subjects. Adding a flavor modifier (next section) "fantasy" confirms this fear...

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, fantasy, matte painting"

one of these goblins is not what it seems....

So it seems that digital art is our winner moving forward. however a close second is fantasy illustration.

2. Flavor

Next we can test some additional flavor modifiers for our prompts to get dall-e to better understand our context. we consider the following flavors here:

2.1 fantasy

2.2 high fantasy

2.3 dungeons and dragons

2.4 monster manual art

2.5 d&d

2.6 magic the gathering

2.1 ---- Fantasy

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, fantasy, digital art"

This is very crisp and vibrant. I doubt the other prompts will beat this. It's probably because fantasy is just a bog standard term for lots of digital art. So here the context is strengthened.

2.2 ---- High Fantasy

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, high fantasy, digital art"

well well well.....we meet again goblin I would date. These don't look right to me but they're not too bad. It might be a good one to keep in your back pocket if you'd like a wizard. Check out #2. Very wizard like imo.

2.3 ---- Dungeons & Dragons

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, dungeons & dragons, digital art"

Here we get harrier goblins for some reason. It's actually quite possible that there are just as many "bugbears" as there goblins in dall-e training sets. bugbears are referred to as "hairy goblinoids". So perhaps this is still a good flavor to add but it's also maybe one that could confuse your dall-e.

2.4 ---- D&D

prompt: "a goblin, portrait shot, d&d, digital art"

The color palette here has become muted and the lines less well defined. It's likely that here there's less training data and perhaps older artwork.

2.5 ---- Monster Manual Art

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, monster manual art, digital art"

Here we're again getting a muted color palette but the lines are better defined. It's possible this has better training data associated.

2.6 ---- Magic the Gathering

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, magic the gathering, digital art"

These actually do look like magic card goblins to me in that there's a lot of variation. The clothing especially has something distinctly mtg in quality that I can't quite put my finger on. However, I think there's just too much variation here. Just look at the horns! Keep this flavor for when you want to get some interesting looking outfits.

To me it feels best just to stick with "fantasy" and not muck about too much with other franchises. Consider magic the gathering as a strong second for when you want to add some creative elements and consider high fantasy when you really want to hammer in the classical fantasy elements.

3. Quality:

I'm not going to talk about quality in this post. This has been well documented for photography and is an expanding study for digital art. For now know that I will be slapping on "trending on artstation, highly detailed" to all my generations.

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

Why these phrases? mostly habit I guess....I haven't done extensive testing to ensure that these are the best phrases to use. For now, at the very least, it typically doesn't HURT us.

4. Artist:

I've done quite a lot of testing for artists in the current beta. We'll cover just a small number that I know will have some effect. Mostly the ones that dall-e knows about and which give vivid colors.

Let's try:

4.1 Stephan Martinière

4.2 Michael Whelan

4.3 Charles Vess

4.4 Marc Simonetti

4.5 Frank Frazetta

4.1 ---- Stephan Martinière

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, by Stephan Martinière, fantasy, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

An artist add some distinct styling to the clothes and faces. Here he gives the goblins a devious look. They're also all eclectically clothed. Martiniere is a science fiction artist and this is going to result in issues later. Definitely a reasonable choice for some classic goblin portraits though. One strange quirk of Martiniere is that...all of these goblins are bald....Not sure why this is. Perhaps in the future everyone loses their hair?

4.2 ---- Michael Whelan

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, by Michael Whelan, fantasy, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

Whelan also produces some good looking goblins. We get a goblin without clothing as though it were just a monster. The musculature is quite good here too. If you inspect the clothing closely you'll notice a lot of fantasy elements we're looking for. Whelan will actually be a clear winner later. Stay tuned.

4.3 ---- Charles Vess

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, by Charles Vess, fantasy, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

Charles Vess is a comic artist and his characters are often quite stylized. This shows through here. Note the horns on THREE of the goblins. Not the right choice here. However, he'll be useful later for Tieflings.

4.4 ---- Marc Simonetti

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, by Marc Simonetti, fantasy, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

Simonetti is does a lot of large landscape shots. The quality on these is going to be good but it also means that there's a lot less pulling portrait styles together. Stick to landscapes with Simonetti.

4.5 ---- Frank Frazetta

Prompt: "A goblin, portrait shot, by Frank Frazetta, fantasy, digital art, trending on artstation, highly detailed"

Frank Frazetta is a master of classical fantasy and Dall-e works very well for him. However he may not work out for some fantastical creatures. here we get some very human looking goblins. Consider Frank for your more human figures. The styles here are decidedly painterly. We'll see in later posts that Frazetta is much better suited to paintings.

My personal belief is that AI art should be primarily for enjoyment. Please support art and artists and furthermore write to your senators about protecting the arts through subsidies, tax breaks for working artists and for laws that protect the jobs of artists. It will not be so easy to change the pose of your characters through dall-e. Consider paying an artist for a commission of that character.

oh jenizah?? :o hope it's still okay to ask. 2, 3, 4, 14, 15 (if applicable), 16, 18, 19, 40, 44, 45, 48, 53, 54, 56, 65-69! i'm sorry for asking so many questions, i've just never heard of jenizah and i'm curious! you can choose to answer as many or as little as you'd like i just 🥺 love ocs

Thanks for all the asks!! Jenizah is the current DND character I'm playing, a dark elf necromancer cleric who follows the Goddess of pain Loviatar. I've been playing them for about a year and a half now and I love them dearly. I have some art pieces of him on my page if you're interested in what he looks like! Should be tagged as Jenizah or Jenizah and Count Everett.

2: Do they consider themselves an optimist? Pessimist? Realist? What are they like in actuality?

He considers himself a pessimist for sure, and in all actuality they're somewhere between a pessimist and a realist. He's the one to bluntly shut down plans if they're not going to work out well, but will also try anything he can to get the result he wants.

3: How do they carry themselves around strangers? Friends/Lovers? Family? Jenizah is pretty much the same around everyone. Loud, flamboyant, limp-wristed, and with a dark sense of humor. He has a bag of holding full of corpses and it doesn't matter if you just met him, he will let you know. Luckily, necromancy is legal in the country. There is a certain individual that Jenizah is romantically interested in, and their personality is subdued around them, as they're a more reserved person and he tries to be respectful of that.

4: If your character was a work of art, how would you describe them?

An oil painting that's in a gilded frame in a museum. Most likely a portrait, as they're a little vain and full of themselves. Large brush strokes and texture. One of those paintings where you can see the layers of shadow and highlights on top of everything else.

14: Does your character value promises? Are they good at keeping them?

Extremely, promises are like blood vows. He tries his best to keep them, but sometimes other things get in the way. He helplessly watched his lover die, and breaking that promise and vow definitely changed him. He can be a little obsessive about it now.

15: Describe their ideal date.

There's a certain vampire count that Jenizah has his eye on and really anything involving him. Something fancy and classy though, Jenizah has expensive tastes.

16: What keeps them going?

Desire. Currently, it's romantic desire. He sees something he wants and he fights with his whole self to achieve that goal.

18: How does your character act when they want to seem inviting?

A little coy, definitely more smiles and open body language than the normal brooding boy he is. May flash some coin around to get somebodies attention.

19: How does your character act when they want to seem threatening?

Oh, he will pull out the skull of a vampire lord he keeps in his bag, or threaten to kill you, bring your spirit back to talk to it to get the answers he needs, and then maybe resurrect you if he's feeling generous...

40: Describe a corruption/redemption arc version of your character.

Jenizah already balances on that fine edge. I've joked that if my DM doesn't let us play out the romance we've been having, Jenizah will murder and dismember his love interest in that standard "yandere" style. He's obsessive, and doesn't form healthy attachments to people. He also has a fear of abandonment and being left behind, and that could be pushed to an extreme.

44: How do they hold onto people?

Tightly, with their nails digging in hard enough to leave a scar.

45: What would they never forgive themselves for?

If they watched any of their friends die again. They're the party healer and ressurector, it's their job to keep them around and failure won't be tolerated.

48: What do they want to leave behind?

The ghost of their former lover. Although we just found out he's now been revived and is working with the enemy so I doubt that will happen any time soon...

53: What does freedom mean to them?

The ability to make the choices he wants. Not in a "no consequences" way, but in a "nobody can stop me" way.

54: What is something they currently look forward to? What is something they dread?

Any time with the vampire Count Everett. Jenizah counts down the hours until sundown each day, hoping he receives a message from him. He dreads the quest that their on, the crushing weight of a world needing saving.

Feel like rambling about the DnD character I just made for a campaign my friend is tossing together.

So, I started with a simple goal. I wanna be a heal-centric Cleric. Be the real classic image of what a Cleric does in people's minds, even if that doesn't really line up with how it plays anymore.

What species? I always try to play something I haven't played, so I settle on Harengon. (Rabbit-man!) Even though this technically doesn't exist in Wildemount, which is the setting we're using, my DM and I agree that a fun animal man is not particularly weird and just because it's not in the sourcebook doesn't mean it can't be around.

So I'm an MtG guy, and realize this character can use a fun new card as the portrait.

And since the other players don't do MtG or aren't current on releases, I steal the name too.

So now we have Preston, rabbit-man Cleric of... something?

Go with Peace Cleric for subclass. Just good vibes time with the fun bunny.

Background time! Feylost seems fun and my DM is on board. Another player also wants to do that exact background, which actually gels nicely because we're supposed to already have some connections as a party.

I've put very little thought into backstory outside of broad strokes, and Wildemount has AMAZING backstory generation roll tables. Seriously these are great I love them, and DM wants us to at least roll one rival and ally, but we can roll per book's instructions on everything we'd like in addition.

Start with where I'm from: oh, a completely different part of the continent than where the game is. Not super weird especially for thos background. That's fine.

Family? 2 parents (also shoutout to the book for having 3+ parents as an option on that table explicitly saying they might be poly, non-monogamous, or just divorced and remarried and these are all valid and normal, feel very seen by that), 5 siblings. Jokes about rabbit birth rates flew around the Discord immediately.

1 significant family relation. I have a family member who caused something horrible to happen to me and they feel indebted to me about it. Gain an ally. Okay, I DM my DM saying I figure that's how little Preston ended up in the Fae. Roll for stat block this person uses... Berserker? Weird. Quirky.

Alright, time to roll for the other ally since DM said 1+ however many your relationship rolls generate for both allies and rivals. I apparently gave a significant sum of money to a beggar, who used that to turn their life around. Awww, that's sweet. Really on brand for the vibe I want here.

Okay, roll for what stat block THEY use... assassin? Okay so this beggar I guess used the gift as seed money to pursue their dreams of contract killing! Sure! Fine! We're definitely not going off the fucking rails here! Nope!

Qlso, this stat block says to roll on the "fateful moments" table because that's a rather dramatic person to interact with. So I roll on that and...

A demon lord visited me in a dream and spooked me real bad? And I woke up knowing how to ritual cast Find Familiar, but MUST summon a Quasit. (I named it Gullet!) I'm... I'm still a Cleric, right? Oh, ALSO ROLL ON THE INDEFINITE MADNESS TABLE.

So roll that. "I've discovered I really enjoy killing people." Wait, no, I misread that. Oh thank god. "I can't take anything seriously. The more serious it should be, the funnier it is." Feeling a little hurt that my personality is apparently listed as a type of madness in the DnD DMG, but I mean like I grudgingly admit this probably isn't a good way to be so fair.

So apparently my PEACE CLERIC helped their new friend start their dream of an assassination business, and this caught the attention of a DEMON LORD who wanted to give me a little buddy to chill with.

Still haven't rolled on the rival table at this point.

So do that, my rival is an ex-lover whose heart I broke. So I guess the rabbit fucks now. Stat block? Guard. So I was dating a cop or something, apparently. Feels like that's probably WHY my Chaotic Good ass dumped them. I remark that this seems REALLY boring compared to the rest, my DM says I can reroll it but honestly it's too funny to me.

So now it's time for some ancillary silliness. Favorite food based on region you're from? Dumplings apparently. Whimsical!

Mysterious secret? I've had dreams where townsfolk see me, scream "Scourger!" and then burst into flames. Seems probably like that's an after-effect of my DEMON LORD PAL, just logically. But also Preston maybe look into some dreamless sleep remedies for these nightmares, bud.

Prophecy? "I will meet my birth parents, and something about this will drastically change how I see the world." Seems appropriate for a child stolen by the Fae, actually.

So that's Preston. My new DnD character who is having a completely normal time and is just fine thanks for asking.

“Doctor, are you-” Amiya entered the Doctor’s office late in the afternoon, about an hour before his shift ended, and found him putting on his coat. “-busy? Are you leaving already?”

“Yeah, I’ve got an appointment to catch. Didja need something before I leave?” He stopped, giving her his full attention for the moment.

The Cautus shook her head. “No, not if you’re busy.”

“Bunny, ya know I’m never too busy for you.” Neither was his fiance, after all. “What’s going on?”

“Some of the other Operators invited me to something they’re calling ‘Leviathans and Landships,’ and they said you would help me with a character?”

The Doctor froze. “They invited you to...Was it Blaze?”

“It was,” she smiled innocently. “She also said you might complain about having too many players already.”

“Damn. Well, if she wants ya to play with us, I’m not gonna say no to both of ya. Besides, I’m leaving early to prep anyway.” Oh, but how to introduce her-

Amiya cocked her head. “You’re leaving work early to play games?”

“No, to prepare to play games. Very important distinction.” He grinned. “I’m the GM, after all.”

“...The Game Master?” The Cautus knew full well he wasn’t the General Manager of anything - not since selling his Kazimierz Knights Club, at least.

He nodded. “Location, snacks, the events of the game itself - all my responsibility. Granted, this week it’s Kal’tsit’s turn to buy snacks, so those aren’t my direct responsibility-”

“Dr. Kal’tsit is playing, Blaze is playing, you’re running it...and I wasn’t invited sooner?” She stared at him hard enough to paralyze him. “Did I do something wrong?”

“Oh, bunny, it’s nothing like that, I just wasn’t sure how any of this was going to shake out, and then by the time I got comfortable, well...Sorry.”

The Guard/Caster sighed. “It’s alright. I’m playing now.”

“Right. Speaking of which, we do need to make you a character.” The Doctor continued walking. “I have all my books and stuff ready to go in the VIP meeting room, just need to get the ones with player options out for you to look at. How much alternative history do you read?”

“Alternative history, Doctor?” Amiya fell into step with him, as she so often did.

He waved a hand in the air. “You know, those books with goblins and magical swords and stuff? How much did Blaze tell you?”

“Um, not a lot. She said you’d fill me in.” He groaned, and she frowned. “Should I have asked her to tell me more?”

“No, but there’s a lot of information to give you and not as much time as I’d like to take to do it. Three hours for a character is already tight, but catching you up on the story, too? Damnit, Blaze, I’m not a miracle-worker even if I can do Arts...” Still, they’d already crossed this bridge. No turning her away at this point.

When the pair arrived at the VIP room, they weren’t the only ones there early. “Good afternoon, Doctor.”

“Good afternoon, Kal’tsit.” He gestured to Amiya. “Blaze invited her to play, so we need to make her a character. Would you mind helping out?”

“I’m leaving now to pick up the food for the game tonight, but I’m coming back after that.”

He sighed with relief. “You’re a lifesaver.”

“That is what a Medic does, isn’t it?” The Feline patted Amiya’s shoulder as she left. “I’ll take care of your vital statistics; after seeing some of his math for Surtr’s character, it will be better that way.”

“I legitimately misread the book,” he grumbled as he began flipping open book after book to its table of contents page, looking for a specific heading that’d tell him there were player character options in it somewhere.

By the time Dr. Kal’tsit returned, the Doctor had his computer open and was scrolling through some of Deepcolor’s character portraits to find one for the Cautus’ character, and she was leaning against his shoulder for a ‘better view’. “Comfortable, Amiya?”

“Mhmm- I mean, um, I need to see the pictures.” As luck would have it, at that exact moment, one caught her eye. “I like that one.”

“Do you, now? Kal’tsit, any issue with Amiya playing a Specialist? Pretty sure we have the basic roles covered, after all.” He pulled out a character sheet as the Feline walked around to see the portrait in question.

Specialist? “I see Enmity Guard here, Doctor.”

“Not Stalker? All the shadows scattered around him?” He caught himself there. “I mean, they don’t have to be a guy-”

“It’s fine, Doctor. I want to play a male character.”

Cool, moment passed safely. “But yeah, I’m pretty sure Stalker or Steadfast Specialist will work. We already have a Summoner, a Focused Medic, a Cleaver Guard, a Flagbearer, and a Chain Caster, after all, and Blaze’ll probably appreciate the frontline help. No offense to your Summons, of course.”

“None taken.” Monst3r was in their crystal at the moment, after all. “Same level as we are now?”

“Yeah, we’re bringing her in tonight. Now, the fun part: explaining how this person is joining the party while they’re completely unreachable from outside the Aura Sphere...” This was going to take awhile.

Twenty minutes before game start time, Manticore slipped into the room, her dice bag being the only indication someone had arrived. The Doctor found her almost immediately regardless. “Good evening, Manticore. Amiya’s going to be joining us tonight.”

“Oh?...How nice. What kind of...character...are you playing?” The Specialist took her seat on the right side of the Doctor (so he could hear her easily) as the Cautus moved her things to sit on the other side of the new arrival. “Did the Doctor...find a new tank?”

“New tank? And make Blaze mad at me? Sounds like a death flag to me,” he commented, otherwise absorbed in rewriting his plans for the night’s session.

Kal’tsit shook her head. “We built her a Stalker to match the portrait she liked.”

“A S-stalker?” The Manticore blushed. “You mean...like me?”

“When I saw the picture, I thought of you,” Amiya noted with a smile.

Manticore’s tail curled around her chair legs for safety. “You...you remembered me...”

“Hey.” Deepcolor strolled in, setting her dice down while leaving a seat between her and the Cautus. “Joining the party, Amiya?”

“Blaze invited her. Speaking of, Doctor, she and Surtr are still on a mission, if I remember the deploym-”

A *bang* from the hallway stopped the Medic in her tracks as another Feline and Sarkaz landed outside the door. “You can take that out of my paycheck,” Blaze sighed, picking the pair of them off the ground.

“We apologize for our la- Blaze.” Surtr squeezed her backpack strap. “We’re not late.”

“Well, yeah, because I blasted us here.”

She spun in place to stare her down. “You forgot the time change across the Kjerag border.”

“Wait, is it- oh, shit, I did.” By then, however, the Feline could see into the room, and so she knocked the Sarkaz inside to reach the empty chair next to Amiya. “BUNNY!!!”

“Ah!” The Cautus was lifted out of her seat and squeezed like a stuffed animal.

The Doctor sighed. “This is going to be a thing now, isn’t it?”

“I believe so,” Kal’tsit agreed, closing the door behind them as Surtr took her seat, and then taking her place next to the GM. “Now that everyone is here, we can begin...Once Blaze has set our Specialist on the ground again.”

“Aww, can’t I just keep her in my lap?” She gave her fiance the eyes-

Nope. “Ya both have sheets to keep track of...besides, ya don’t squeeze me like that when I come home from the office...”

“‘Cause you’ve got bird-bones!” Blaze finally sat down, allowing Amiya to do the same. “Just ‘cause you’re jealous...”

“Where’d we leave off last time, anyway? We just got done killing that Leviathan, right?” The Sarkaz steered the group back in the direction she was interested in going - continuing the plot.

The Doctor shook his head. “No, that was the session before. LAST session, well, things got interesting. Let me set the scene...”
