Comparing Fanfiction to Published Books is Being Unfair to Yourself (the fanfic writer)
Just a reminder that published books have been put through a long process that fanfiction just...hasn't. And that's a good thing!
To traditionally publish a book, that book has already gone through the gatekeepers (agents, acquisition, etc.) and then the editorial team (developmental editing, line editing, proof editing) and then the rest of the business like marketing and promotion. Published books aren't done alone, but by an entire team.
(And sure, you could get a beta reader, but most fanfic authors don't even need one.)
However, as a writer, what's even more important to remember is that fanfiction writing, uh…isn't like original fiction writing.
There's less emphasis on style, for instance. When I write fanfiction, I'm actually writing in what I think of as "the fanfiction style" instead of my own original style. And that's really cool! Obviously, I like the fanfiction style because I write in it and read lots of it.
And I just wanted to remind you, the fanfiction writer, that if what you want to write is artful think pieces, then write them as artfully as you can. And if what you want to write is popular fanfics, then write what's popular in your fandom. One isn't better than the other, it just comes with different expectations.
But the beauty of fanfiction is that you can write whatever you want, regardless of quality or demand or market, and there just might be someone out there who wants to read it. Just because they're in the same fandom you are. Just because they share the same tastes as you. That's why I love fanfiction.
It's great to broaden your horizons and branch out into original works to help you write. In fact, I think every writer should venture out of their comfort zones at least every once in a while.
But if comparing your fanfiction to published books only results in derailing your enthusiasm for your fanwork(s), please stop. The processes for publishing/posting are not comparable.
And fanfiction isn't supposed to be stressful; it's supposed to be fun.

She was praying as a joke, really--a last resort, a lament of anger towards Castiel for someone more qualified to be a father and--Well, according to the scripture, she couldn't have wrangled anyone better.
The question is, why here and why now? If what everyone says is true, God doesn't just do this. Come down to earth. Especially to her, a Nephilim, whom the angels see as abominations most of the time.
Guess she doesn't really know his opinion for sure, though... and something tells her that even if she did have the instincts to be hostile, that it would end in her own ending.

Fanfiction & Being Inspired by Other Fanfiction Writers
In the first fandom I ever wrote for, I really liked a specific AU that had gotten popular. It was a small fandom though, so the "popular" AU was only, like, three or four fics lol. But I was still really inspired by those three or four fics, and a couple of specific scenes/ideas the other authors used launched me into writing my own version of that AU (which was my very first fanfiction ever).
This may just be my opinion, but I don't think it's wrong to be inspired by other authors' stories. Some of my readers have been inspired by mine. And even during that one time the inspired writer basically just copied my ideas beat-for-beat, I wasn't mad because they were a different writer than me who wrote a different way from me and their using my ideas still didn't take anything away from my story which I loved and so many readers loved.
You are your own writer with your own style and your own interpretation of canon/character/story. Whatever you write, even if it's heavily influenced by another writer, will end up being your own because you wrote it. (Though I don't recommend copying another writer; I'm just super chill.)
And some time after I had finished my first fanfic, someone (unknown to me) recommended that fic to one of the authors I had been inspired by. They hadn't finished their story, and it had been years by then. But they wrote to me that reading my version of that AU had felt like reading a version of their own story, and they felt like they could finally let go of their unfinished story now.
So, write your story and enjoy writing it, because one of the best things about fanfiction is that we basically recycle canon/fanon and collectively evolve the fandom as we go.
