Ok but please give us the essay about Tintin's belief (and defensive mechanism I dare to say) that he and his friends are invincible!!!

Ok so, throughout the albums, Tintin operates on this naive belief that nothing bad will ever happen to him and his friends. And technically, he’s not wrong, because comic book logic, but it nonetheless influences how he behaves in his adventures.

The belief primarily comes from the fact that he’s always escaping dangerous situations relatively unscathed: murder and execution attempts, kidnappings, getting drugged, etc. No matter what happens to him, he’s always fine in the end, and that’s what convinces him that nothing truly bad can happen to him.

But he doesn’t just believe this applies to him; we see him apply this same logic to his friends. After all, they all get out of the same situations as unscathed as him. And as a result, Tintin is constantly throwing himself and others into danger with little thought about consequences, and often, he does so despite complaints from Haddock, who is a bit more realistic about the threats they face.

Tintin in Tibet is an example of this: no matter how dangerous the situation is, Tintin doesn’t stop to consider the consequences until it’s almost too late. It’s worth noting that he doesn’t exactly pressure Haddock into going, but simply assumes (correctly) that Haddock will come along and as a result, is never truly surprised when Haddock shows up. The one exception to this is the time he manipulates Haddock into continuing the search after Tharkey leaves (which I'll come back to).

Another example of this attitude is in Red Sea Sharks. Despite knowing how dangerous the situation in Khemed is, and the fact that the emir doesn’t outright ask for help, Tintin suggests they head there without really stopping to think about the dangers they might face, and once again Haddock follows reluctantly.

This belief in his and his friends’ invincibility also influences how Tintin behaves in dangerous situations. In The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin remains optimistic when he and Haddock are stuck in the desert, despite there being no indication that they might be saved. Unlike Haddock, he doesn’t truly believe they’ll die, and that’s what allows him to push forward. In Red Sea Sharks, Tintin remains calm (calmer than Haddock in any case) when they spot the periscope from the submarine that wants to sink them, and retains a positive attitude, convinced that “all isn't lost yet”.

It also explains his rock-solid belief that Chang is alright in Tintin in Tibet: Chang, as Tintin’s friend, should also be invincible (and again, comic book logic proves him right), hence Tintin’s stubbornness throughout the album. We see Tintin repeatedly dismiss any signs that Chang couldn’t have made it because it doesn’t align with his belief. In fact, Tintin’s dream about Chang is a manifestation of his belief in Chang’s invincibility, and it acts as a justification of sorts to go look for him.

This very belief in his and his friends’ invincibility also explains Tintin’s reaction to injuries: he’s very dismissive of his own injuries, refusing to stay in the hospital longer than strictly necessary in both The Black Island and Destination Moon. We also don’t see him very concerned about the Thompsons when they’re in the hospital in The Calculus Affair.

Tintin’s reaction to death is also pretty casual; aside from the first few albums where he does genuinely think he’ll die (particularly in Cigars of the Pharaoh), he tends to stay calm in the face of death. This is in line with my earlier point that Tintin stays calm in the face of danger.

But more importantly, he tends to brush off near-death experiences when they involve his friend. When Haddock nearly gets shot in the head by some monkeys in Red Rackham’s Treasure, his reaction is to tell him to calm down and that “all’s well that end’s well”, while a rather shaken Haddock snaps at the Thompsons for nearly getting him killed. Tintin also dismisses Haddock’s fear of dying in Prisoners of the Sun. Of course, we know it’s because he has information that Haddock doesn’t but it remains a rather cruel attitude towards Haddock, and shows that Tintin sometimes forgets that not everyone is as sure of their invincibility as he is.

It’s during their trip to the moon, Tintin comes close to losing Haddock for the first time. He yells at him for it, but then immediately tells him to forget it once they’re safely back inside. Tintin, when confronted with a near-death experience like that, would rather ignore it rather than consider he might be wrong about his and his friends’ invincibility. He’s once again forced to face the possibility that Haddock might die when they’re back on earth, and we do see him worry for real that time. But since the album ends shortly after Haddock revives, we don’t see how Tintin reacts beyond the initial relief that he’s alright.

However, we see him dragging Haddock on increasingly dangerous adventures in the following albums. In fact, prior to the moon adventure, the only adventure where Tintin and Haddock are faced with adversaries that are trying to kill them is in The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun (Land of Black Gold doesn’t really count on account of Haddock having joined Tintin of his own volition and therefore wasn't dragged into it). This suggests that, if anything, Haddock’s near death and miraculous recovery has further convinced Tintin that he’s invincible.

Tintin’s attitude to death only begins to change following Tintin in Tibet; outwardly, Tintin doesn’t dwell on the cliff scene more than strictly necessary, but nonetheless, this is the first time that Haddock’s life is endangered as a direct result of Tintin’s actions, specifically by his decision to ply Haddock with alcohol in an attempt to get him to change his mind about following Tharkey down the mountain. In the past, his life is primarily endangered by Haddock’s own actions or by the villains of the album, never by Tintin himself, and this obvious leaves Tintin a bit shaken.

As a result, we see Tintin become less impulsive in the following albums. In The Castafiore Emerald, they stay home and Tintin is shown being more concerned about Haddock’s well-being while he’s injured. In Flight 714, Tintin actively tries to avoid trouble by initially refusing Carreidas offer to get on his plane, despite having no proof that anything bad would happen, and in Tintin and the Picaros, he refuses to go to San Theodoros, even though his friends are in danger, and only goes after Haddock goes without him.

And while Tibet is not the last dangerous adventure Tintin and Haddock embark on, it is the last one that they go on of their own volition. This suggests that Tintin’s attitude towards his and his friends’ well-being has changed following the trip to the Himalayas. It’s especially noticeable when you contrast his attitude towards going to Khemed in Sharks and to San Theodoros in Picaros; one can argue that the situation was significantly more volatile in Khemed, but Tintin didn’t hesitate to go, while he outright refuses to get on a plane to San Theodoros despite the Thompsons and Bianca Castafiore being held prisoner there and, arguably, in more need of his help than the emir was. By that last album, Tintin is (rightfully, in my opinion) finally placing his and Haddock’s well-being and safety above others’, making him more cautious than he was in the earlier albums.

You know the way to my heart! Bagginshield fluff? Yes please!

Life in the mountain had grown rather peaceful once the majority of restoration had come to a close. Though there was never such a thing as ‘being done’ with that large to-do list that seemed to grow more and more with each passing day. That being said, the state of Erebor couldn’t be denied, nor the part that both its King and Consort had to play in getting to that point.

It was moving forward, far beyond the reign of Thror and anyone who came before for the line of Durin. The Longbeards were a clan to look to once more, and Thorin was content with the idea that he might be making his ancestors proud. Hard work and innovative thinking won the day, and many more to come. Though it left the king rather tired more often than not.

Though kingly duties and pushing for the future were hardly on the dwarf’s mind this morning.

It was one of those rare days when his agenda didn’t start until later in the morning, which meant an extra hour of sleep which was few and far between. He could fuss about the meeting of guild leaders later, or how to properly entertain their elven envoys from Mirkwood in preparation for Kili and Tauriel’s wedding. The to-do list was as big as the mountain itself, but for the moment, Thorin could only focus on curling his arm a bit tighter around his husband’s waist from beneath those thick warm blankets.

“What time is it?” Bilbo slurred, his voice thick with exhaustion as his back pressed into Thorin’s chest.

“Don’t know,” Thorin murmured in response, resting his chin into that little space between Bilbo’s neck and shoulder. It was like slotting together two perfect puzzle pieces. “And I don’t particularly care.”

The snort from the hobbit was enough of a response. Bilbo found humor in these lazy days, but what was a lazy day for Thorin didn’t necessarily mean it was a lazy day for Bilbo. Whenever alertness truly hit him, it meant the day needed to begin and things needed to be accomplished. Though he wasn’t racing to get out of bed just yet.

“Have we missed breakfast?” The important questions, of course.

“If we did, I can assure you there will be a second one whenever you like.” Sighing softly and pressing a small kiss to the backside of one of those pointed ears Thorin so adored (the only kind of pointed ears he adored, mind you), his eyes remained closed and his grip around Bilbo intensified. “Before you go rushing off for food Kurdûn…allow me a little bit more time like this.”

“Is that an order, Your Majesty?”

Whatever impish behavior Bilbo felt like starting off with today, it wasn’t surprising. The hobbit always had a sharp wit about him and could be insufferable on a great number of days. Thorin wouldn’t have him any other way. “No, consider it a humble request, and because I’m too tired to let you go now.” The days had been long, and their time together had been cut short by miserable work hours and various events in preparation for the ceremony.

“Because you asked nicely…” Bilbo sighed, content beneath the blanket, as well as Thorin’s arm. There was no safer place in all of Middle Earth.

12. How many WIP's do you have in your docs for next year?

I just finished a rough draft for the last chapter of my latest bagginshield fic, and I have to finish my izzy/lucious ofmd wip. Those are actual, living, current wips.

I have a dreamling wip that I ran out of steam with, and another dreamling idea to work on next year.

other projects, MORE TINTIN. MORE JOPZIER. Maybe a Major Merlin from jsamn fandom. I am really feeling writing lately.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Maybe the childercelles fic I wrote about Lascelles being a flower shop owner and Childermass being a tattoo artist that I love and that @fol-de-lol enjoyed, but that no one else apparently read.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

How obsessed I’d become with Death In Paradise probably. I started out rewatching the first two seasons with my roommate, and then we blazed through all of the episodes to the current day and I am sort of bonkers over Richard/Camille Jack/Florence. Also that I would fall in love with and write fic for Dougal McGuire. These are not new fandoms, nor are they particularly active ones, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

9. When was the first time they felt sexualy attracted to the other?

- for luke it was pretty soon after he was rescued on bespin. it was one of those "oh no he's hot!" moments. for lando it was on tatooine during the time they planned han's rescue, after luke built his new lightsaber and started to practice with it

15. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

- luke absolutely got tangled in his jedi robes and tripped face first in front of lando. jedi master and all that but zero balance xD lando definitely did that thing where he got drunk and once luke decided to help him back home he deadass said, "sorry, I'm sure you're nice and all, but I have a husband and I love him, he's the best", making luke laugh so much and lando regret everything the next morning

also luke definitely tried to serenade lando with never gonna give you up but that actually worked out fine because it's the 100% guaranteed way to cheer lando up if he's had a bad day so it wasn't that embarrassing in the end^^

16. Who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?

- this actually happens to both of them equally but luke is more obvious about it. luke tends to get insecure whenever he's at any of lando's cloud city functions and feels he isn't fancy enough. he's just a farm boy after all. it gets better as soon as lando puts his hand on his waist though^^ surefire way to make luke know lando wants him there.

as for lando, he hides it better but luke being a jedi and effectively the most powerful being in the entire galaxy is pretty intimidating a lot of times. and that gets easier whenever luke is very tender with him^^

19. A song that makes you think about life

Not to make it feel bleak, but I have two that are both like that considering my general outlook on things currently: House on a Hill by The Pretty Reckless (it's pretty much about how those that have come before us higher up end up controlling the narrative and society in general even centuries later to have such a stranglehold; and yes, I can tell you, I do sadly think and worry about the children all the time, especially now in many facets of how they are treated in society), and Hello Helicopter by Motion City Soundtrack (feels like seeing from a birds' eye view of the corruption of society and both asking and lamenting with disillusionment at what has happened, which is definitely how I've ended up after the anger subsides in our current world).

22. A song that moves you forward

Two songs in particular do this to me. Alone In A Room by Asking Alexandria (I still have yet to admit to a lot of feelings out of fear and shame, but this was really a motivating factor that got this song to hit me - especially alongside the acoustic version that really hits a nerve with a level of desperation, and really nailed a lot of feelings on what's happened to me and what I feel I do to myself and how I feel about life in general) and Even If It Kills Me by Motion City Soundtrack (a song about the general tiredness and unhappiness with life and a reflection on a new perspective on how to still keep going in your own way regardless).

27. A song that breaks your heart

I have a few. Especially on people I've lost. Used To by Daughtry (though more of a relationship song, it still feels relevant to me and lays out a lot about me and my sister and my complex feelings around still not having spoken to her and how she's behaving - it's not so much pleading, but asking why she's doing this and what happened to her), Amelia by Tonight Alive (though about the death of a 16 year old, there is a lot here that feels relevant to people I've lost, especially a friend who sadly died at 11 and for some reason I've never really been able to get over; there are others I have, but the feel and sound of this song really hits in particular for her) and We Are The Others by Delain, in particular the acoustic one that REALLY touches a nerve with the strings and Charlotte Wessels' voice (an anti-conformist song especially dedicated to Sophie Lancaster, who was beaten to death, whilst her boyfriend was severely injured - it was very much presumed that the attack was incredibly aggravated by them being heavily involved in the goth subculture - and which took place in the UK in August 2007, and diving more into it and attacks like this really rips my soul in half).

What locations, natural phenomena, buildings, flora, and fauna are respected and revered in various societies? What artifacts endure through the ages, and what meanings are applied to them? Arda is full of wonderful objects and places (and some not-so-wonderful ones), and each are worth exploring. This is a day for looking at the physical (and metaphysical?) world of Arda and how its people fit into it.

❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

hmmmmmm. possibly either chilchuck or marcille. i can't decide between the two bc a lot of ppl get chilchuck's family background wrong. he's not divorced, he and his wife are separated. his daughters are young adults at best, not young children. it's left very ambiguous if he'll get back with his wife.

marcille for a lot of reasons lol. tho, it's mostly the farcille fans.

💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?

oooh, probably being more of a fan of the manga than the anime? the anime is p great so far! but it does cut out a lot of things like the extras not getting animated or some certain scenes were just better in the manga than the anime. like, seeing the anime-onlys being confused on the world of dunmeshi and i'm just like, "IT'S EXPLAINED IN THE MANGA!!!" 😂

22. A song you think suits the Tintin series or a particular character?

Not in English (sorry!) and technically not for a single character but Simplement Amigos by Yanfourd is a great Haddotin song lol it's about two people that have to pretend they're just friends because they know others won't accept them being in love with each other (it's like the peak gay angst song really)

Otherwise, I always giggle when listening to Kapitän by Elfmorgen, because I can imagine Haddock singing the chorus (roughly translated it means "When I'm grown up / I want to be captain / On the MS Kiss My Ass") either when he's drunk or as a young man

33. If you could fight any character, who would it be?

ULTIMATE TRAINS

for autumn asks

Trains - if you could spend the fall anywhere, where would you go?

Ooh idk if this counts, technically, because it's not a destination per se, but there's a train in Canada that goes from Toronto to Vancouver over four days, and the idea of getting to see all of the country in the fall with all the colourful leaves and cool weather sounds so cool!!

Ultimate - describe your best holiday experience.

I don't really celebrate any holidays in the fall 🤔 so my favourite experience wasn't directly related to a holiday, but I got to experience it because it was a statutory holiday and I got a day off work, so I guess that counts? Anyways, I used that free day to go to a bunch of local landmarks that I could never find anyone to go with and I spent a wonderful (and exhausting) day playing tourist in my own city, took some really great photos and I met a few nice people along the way :)

In terms of specific holiday stuff, I got to spend Halloween in Times Square when I was 13 so that was pretty cool I remember some of the stores nearby were handing out candy which was nice because I wasn't able to go trick or treating that year

Tell me about Balin :⁠-⁠)

You know, I would LOVE to tell you my thoughts and feelings about Balin!! He's one of my favorites within the Hobbit Trilogy, and I think we can all agree, he's just that great.

I see Balin as an advisor, but also something of a parental figure among the company. He's wise and calm, and has more grace about him than most, and that makes him a perfect asset to the team - he's also a hell of a warrior with experience. Honestly, he's the dwarf I'd probably go to with problems and expect to get the best advice from. Not to mention, have you seen how huggable he looks?? Like for real.

He's a perfect character for Thorin to look to for guidance, just as any king should have an advisor, and he's one of the first to truly welcome Bilbo into the company. I love him dearly.

A headcanon of mine that I have for Balin (tho that's this whole entire post, really): While in the book he's younger than Thorin, I think in movie!verse I place him older than Thorin - he just has that vibe. Also, the sole reason of his beard and hair going white is definitely due to Dwalin and Thorin. They're the stress that he never asked for, but loves dearly. This dwarf needs a holiday, I swear.
