Silly little Descendants headcanon:
Whenever Anthony speaks French, his voice gets deeper. Nobody knows why, it just happens. His own working theory is that French is spoken in the throat/inside the mouth(?) so it sounds lower than English.

So..
Was anyone gonna tell me Dragon Hall was for all ages or was I supposed to find that out myself from Uma's wicked book while on an airplane with no cell service or paper?

What are your honest thoughts on Lonnie and her family in Descendants?
Personally, I've always liked Lonnie, but I have to admit that at this point in time I feel like I'm more attached to the fanon version of her (who has actual motivations and a backstory), than the canon version whose personality changes every 5 seconds. I feel like she had real potential as an AK who likes the VK's, and who's also not afraid to challenge Auradon's status quo, but something got lost along the way.
I don't really have any thoughts about her family, tho (outside of the og Mulan movie, anyway - but we're talking Descendants now). They're barely mentioned, and when they are, we're reminded that Disney doesn't know what to do with ethnic characters (*cough* Lil' Shang *cough*). I'm not Asian/Chinese myself, so I can't rly speak on the representation aspect (if you're Asian, and would like to, feel free to share your opinion in the replies/reblogs! I'd love to hear them), but it's obvious that Lonnie is not a Chinese name, and from what I understand, naming a kid after their parents is a big no-no in Chinese culture.
So...yeah. I have a lot of thoughts on her characterization tho, so if you wanna hear me ramble about her character arc, click on the read more link.
Before D1: The first time we see her, in the School of Secrets webseries that was released before D1 as promo, she's spying on the other AK's, trying to expose the shady things that happen behind closed doors, and to challenge the idea that the upcoming arrival of the VK's signals an imminent doom for Auradonian society. Granted, they never confirmed the fact that it was her behind the shorts, but she was voiced by the same actress that played her in the movies and if I remember correctly she also had the same bracelets.
Based on this appearance, she sounds like an incredibly interesting character, as the only other AK besides Ben and Doug who wants to give the VK's a chance. Additionally, she's standing up for what she believes in like her mother did, without turning into a carbon copy of Mulan.
D1: Her attitude towards the VK's is kind of confusing; one minute, she's asking the girls for a haircut and showing the c4 sympathy for their shitty childhoods, having little to no problem with them. The next, she's screaming and running along with Audrey and her princesses. Peer pressure? Personality shift? Fear of Mal's dark magic? Go figure.
D2: She sneaks out to the Isle of the Lost, helps the c4 fight Uma's crew, and she uses a loophole to enter the R.O.A.R. team as its first female captain. I loved seeing them develop her character more and give her a plotline, but I also kind of wished they hadn't turned her into a full carbon copy of her mother. I think this is when the writers also started getting confused abt her character, because in the first movie she was a lot more girly, and not necessarily athletic. Obviously she can be both at the same time but it felt like a sudden change.
Wicked World: Her personality (??) mostly stays the same, but for reasons that I can't figure out, she forgets she likes fencing, and is suddenly into...music??? She has a side gig as a DJ??? Uhh ok
School of Secrets: Lonnie's Warrior Sword: We're reverting back to her D2 characterization: she's athletic, headstrong, and anxious about her mother's legacy, or whether she can fulfill it. The plot also borrows a lot of elements from the og Mulan movie. It's an enjoyable read, but it's pretty much what you'd expect from a daughter of Mulan, and I wish they'd done more with her.
I liked her relationship with Jay, tho. Their dynamic (esp in the books ) is fun and they make a good team. That was a highlight for sure.
All in all, I like her, but she suffers from the same problem that every side character in this franchise does: inconsistency.

VK Isle Magic
What little magic the VKs can do under the barrier
Mal's green eyes
Jay and Jade can be a bit too convincing
Evie has a natural affinity for chemistry and potions
Uma has influence over the waves
Celia and Freddie can manipulate shadows
Maddy and other descendants of Mim can make plants wither and food rot
Gems pop from the ground where Hadie walks. Any genuine gold or silver on the Isle is attracted to him.
Yzla and Zevon carry an aura that terrifies others wherever they go.

And what of Ariana Rose? Who is she? Does Aurora have a sibling in Descendants? Or Phillip? Don't tell me she is Tulip Morningstar's daughter, cause wouldn’t that make Audrey and Ariana second cousins? Plus they’re separate continuities, Descendants and Villains, aren't they?
Yes as far as actual Disney the company goes the Villains novels and Descendants franchise are totally separate continuties.
My DisneyVerse includes both my own Villain backstories and the Canon Descendants rewrites in the same continuity. I don't really use anything from the Villains books done by Serena Valentino as they're her own headcanons and not any more official than mine. Whats shown in the movies are the only true "canon" as far as I'm concerned.
(I do wish I'd named my Descendants rewrites something other than 'Canon Descendants' now, but I was trying to make them match up with the movies. xD )
Let me check my notes real quick for what I have for Ariana Rose.
Ok I do have her changed to a second something cousin as neither Philip or Aurora are seen to have siblings by the time they're grown (I doubt Stefan and Leah would risk another child tbh). She's the daughter of a daughter sister of Queen Leah. I made her from Aurora's side of the family to go with the whole Matching First Intital thing Descendants has going.
But honestly I could see Phillip having a younger sibling, most likely a sister who's off screen somewhere and she could be Ariana's mother to get her closer to her book counterpart. I'd drop the rose part of her name for my DisneyVerse as that would just get confusing with Briar Rose running around.

Does anyone know a way to read the Descendents books? I've no access to a library and can't buy them online. Are they up for free anywhere?

I’ve already said I hc that Anthony speaks French when he’s having Big Feelings, but I would like to add to that: if it’s bad enough, he can get “stuck” in French. As in he genuinely cannot form English sentences even if he wants to. The words just don’t come to him, or they’re so jumbled and grammatically misplaced it’s unintelligible. And his friends understand like- four words in French combined. All of them via Anthony’s speaking the language. So if, say, he’s having a panic attack bad enough to get stuck, he will be unable to communicate why.
Not that he would if he could speak English, but the squad would have a fighting chance at figuring it out based on what he does say.

Beef on the isle of the lost:
Harry Hook stole Cruella's red car and she had Jace & Horace track him down and lock him in the stocks for two days until his dad convinced her to let him go.
Sammy Smee was accused of being the thief that kept stealing from Jafar and was tied up for hours. Also Harry was the one stealing.
Uma dumped gruel on Jace Badun during a food fight.
Smee and Lefou fought over a can of Beans at Gaston's Duels without rules.
The horned king had a sword fight with Frollo.
Clay Clayton busted down Ursula's door, who then thought it was Gil and had her eels spit ink in his face. Uma has spit in his food ever since as revenue.
Harry got his hat stolen by some of Claudine's friends and had to retrieve it from her house.
One of the sea three threw an eel tail in Mad Maddy's mouth during a food fight.

Run, run and don't stop running
Flash lived the end of the world again and was thinking about how to retire from being a hero; It actually started out as a pretty normal day, everyone was at the Watchtower for a meeting when Batman showed up with a strange book.
The book had summoning rituals and information about ghosts. Flash scoffed at it until Batman talked about the Joker trying to buy it from warlocks and use it, luckily he hadn't succeeded because of Bruce intervention. They all agreed to leave the book with Constantine, who looked sulky about the situation.
The problem was what happened shortly after; while they were trying to deal with another invasion (of strange, glowing, one-eyed beings) the Joker appeared in the middle of the battle with a wide smile and the same book that Constantine had been given (Constantine was really confused, he was sure he left the book in a place where not even humans can enter) Flash had a bad feeling when the villain picked it up and started talking, beginning the summoning ritual.
His bad feeling grew as he watched a necklace with a red stone shone around the villain's neck. Joker laughed commenting that it was a family heirloom (although he didn't ask). And that it was his precious treasure.
From there, everything went to hell. All the creatures saw the portal opening and bowed in respect. Shortly after "The Ghost King" appeared, the entire League had fallen in battle. The one-eyed beings were hard but ¿this? This was on another level, not even Superman could win against it. And Batman didn't had a backup plan for an unknown enemy.
Flash looked into the King's expressionless red eyes as he backed away, and just when he thought all was lost, he heard a voice. Everything around him froze.
"Run, run and change my son's future"
Not knowing what the voice meant and noticing that time seemed frozen, he began to run. He was going to run and turn back time, change the future, steal that book, kill the Ghost King, he didn't know what he would do, but he hoped it would work.
From the Infinite Realms, Clockwork frowned at his screen. And for once in centuries, he would help the Speedforce change the future, regardless of the consequences.
