i'm sure someone has said this before but the love potion plotline could've been a lot less sketchy if they added a throwaway line like "actually you can't force someone to be in love with you BUT you can use a potion to enhance an already existing attraction". ben was implied to be somewhat attracted to mal from the moment they met anyway (even longer if you count him dreaming of her in the books). maybe we could even have mal be able to figure out that he has a crush on her (but he doesn't do anything abt it bcs he obvi doesn't want to break audrey's heart; and then the potion kind of makes him act more impulsively) or something

actually what gets me about d1 is how hyper aware these kids are that their parents don’t love them. in the kitchen scene when they’re absolutely silent after lonnie’s ‘i thought even villains loved their kids’… like there’s no grand realisation. no enlightenment. they are So Aware of the fact their parents don’t love them. even the first line in evie’s rttc verse: ‘so i’ve got some mischief in my blood / can you blame me? i never got no love’.

and yet, we see them desperately trying to please their parents. jay with the lamp. carlos, for a moment, believing cruella wants him to stay bc she’ll miss him. evie with her mother. mal agreeing to go to auradon so she can steal the wand for maleficent.

all of this desperation, some blind belief, which is always going to be futile. their efforts were pointless from the beginning. villains don’t love their kids. and the kids are so, painfully aware of that.

Evie: doesn’t have social media but is actually “that girl” without realizing it’s a TikTok trend. romanticizes everything about life, even sucky days. journals daily, has millions of hobbies, her whole room is covered in crystals, bullet journals and scrapbooks, really good time management skills, sees life like a fairytale/movie. seems naive but is actually the smartest bitch in the room. always raises her hand at every question in class.

Mal: that one kid who pretends to be dead inside but actually is an empath and a huge sweetie with big emotions, thinks that she’s managed to keep up her tough girl act and that no one realizes she’s really a marshmallow but really everyone knows. super chaotic but absolutely loves the chaos. basically an adorable mess.

Jay: the friend that says what everyone is thinking but not saying in difficult conversations. is super emotionally intelligent for other people but denies his own emotions. bestttt at giving pep talks but sucks at believing in himself. sweetest person alive but doubts himself constantly. adores sports and is super dedicated to it but hates the whole jerky jock guy culture and is a total feminist.

Carlos: super anxious sweetiepie who is really booksmart and tech savvy but has no social skills. says the smartest “higher self” shit like literally be dropping original Aristotle-level wisdom but thinks what he says is just basic common sense and is confused why other people are impressed when he says shit like “you can’t love someone else wholly unless you wholly love yourself.” actually has his shit together.

the past is past

OR: the core four healing slowly from trauma? i think yes.

mal thinking about how far her mother’s love extended, whether it would immediately be withdrawn and leave her drowning as soon as she revealed she was nothing like the girl her mom wanted her to be.

she comes home after a long day with her hair cut in a shaggy bob, nothing like the clean-cut usual style she wears. she feels the anxiety bubble up inside her, coil around her intestines like a dragon. her friends are surprised but congratulate her, jay clapping her on the back and carlos complimenting the layering. evie giving her a quick kiss and gushing over how good it looks on her. jay makes her a bowl of her favorite soup and they all pile around the couch to watch a movie, interjecting with compliments on her new, authentic hair. she’s okay.

evie meticulously making sure she was pretty but never too pretty, dumb but never too dumb, airheaded and cute enough to attract boys but not enough to upstage her mother, who blamed and projected.

evie dresses up and goes out with her friends for ben’s birthday and quickly rejects some guy who comes up to her, claiming that she’s cute and just right for her, backed up by her friends and her girlfriend. momentarily, she feels ashamed and wrong, the familiar thought of her worth only being determined by how she’s desired and viewed. then she looks over at mal, who sees her just the same when she wakes up in a tank top and sweatpants, hair a rat’s nest, face pillow-creased, and her friends, who love her every which way. she’s okay.

jay wondering which has father cared more about, the things jay stole for their shop or his son himself, and which would be worse to him - if jay came back empty-handed or didn’t come back home at all.

jay shows up to their house later than usual and is met with a worried carlos who gives him a rib-crushing hug and demands to know where he was. evie and mal rush in as well, evie mumbling in relief and mal punching him gently in the shoulder and asking what took him so long. he responds with a confused explanation that he was helping clean out the chemistry lab as he’s led to the kitchen. carlos nestles closer to him with a kiss and tells him they missed him. he’s okay.

carlos puzzling over the fact that cruella was kind and gentle sometimes but the moment he screwed up she would turn cold and furious and if it was his fault, because what mother would treat a child like that.

carlos burns a piece of toast and has to unplug and pour water on the toaster so the smoke doesn’t set off their fire alarm. he feels the familiar fear rise in him and his body start to shake. jay speaks to him gently and tells him it’s okay, they can always get a new toaster and it was on its last legs anyway. evie sits by him, promising none of them are mad and everyone makes mistakes. mal pats his back and makes him a new slice of toast. he’s okay.

What are your honest thoughts on Lonnie and her family in Descendants?

Personally, I've always liked Lonnie, but I have to admit that at this point in time I feel like I'm more attached to the fanon version of her (who has actual motivations and a backstory), than the canon version whose personality changes every 5 seconds. I feel like she had real potential as an AK who likes the VK's, and who's also not afraid to challenge Auradon's status quo, but something got lost along the way.

I don't really have any thoughts about her family, tho (outside of the og Mulan movie, anyway - but we're talking Descendants now). They're barely mentioned, and when they are, we're reminded that Disney doesn't know what to do with ethnic characters (*cough* Lil' Shang *cough*). I'm not Asian/Chinese myself, so I can't rly speak on the representation aspect (if you're Asian, and would like to, feel free to share your opinion in the replies/reblogs! I'd love to hear them), but it's obvious that Lonnie is not a Chinese name, and from what I understand, naming a kid after their parents is a big no-no in Chinese culture.

So...yeah. I have a lot of thoughts on her characterization tho, so if you wanna hear me ramble about her character arc, click on the read more link.

Before D1: The first time we see her, in the School of Secrets webseries that was released before D1 as promo, she's spying on the other AK's, trying to expose the shady things that happen behind closed doors, and to challenge the idea that the upcoming arrival of the VK's signals an imminent doom for Auradonian society. Granted, they never confirmed the fact that it was her behind the shorts, but she was voiced by the same actress that played her in the movies and if I remember correctly she also had the same bracelets.

Based on this appearance, she sounds like an incredibly interesting character, as the only other AK besides Ben and Doug who wants to give the VK's a chance. Additionally, she's standing up for what she believes in like her mother did, without turning into a carbon copy of Mulan.

D1: Her attitude towards the VK's is kind of confusing; one minute, she's asking the girls for a haircut and showing the c4 sympathy for their shitty childhoods, having little to no problem with them. The next, she's screaming and running along with Audrey and her princesses. Peer pressure? Personality shift? Fear of Mal's dark magic? Go figure.

D2: She sneaks out to the Isle of the Lost, helps the c4 fight Uma's crew, and she uses a loophole to enter the R.O.A.R. team as its first female captain. I loved seeing them develop her character more and give her a plotline, but I also kind of wished they hadn't turned her into a full carbon copy of her mother. I think this is when the writers also started getting confused abt her character, because in the first movie she was a lot more girly, and not necessarily athletic. Obviously she can be both at the same time but it felt like a sudden change.

Wicked World: Her personality (??) mostly stays the same, but for reasons that I can't figure out, she forgets she likes fencing, and is suddenly into...music??? She has a side gig as a DJ??? Uhh ok

School of Secrets: Lonnie's Warrior Sword: We're reverting back to her D2 characterization: she's athletic, headstrong, and anxious about her mother's legacy, or whether she can fulfill it. The plot also borrows a lot of elements from the og Mulan movie. It's an enjoyable read, but it's pretty much what you'd expect from a daughter of Mulan, and I wish they'd done more with her.

I liked her relationship with Jay, tho. Their dynamic (esp in the books ) is fun and they make a good team. That was a highlight for sure.

All in all, I like her, but she suffers from the same problem that every side character in this franchise does: inconsistency.
