Let's consider the sampling bias of a classic polling method: the telephone survey.
In many jurisdictions, robo-calling cell phone numbers is illegal, so right off the jump, our sample is limited to people with landlines.
Second, our survey's calling centre probably doesn't operate 24/7, and you can only answer a home landline when you're at home, so we're also selecting for people who tend to be at home during our calling centre's office hours.
Third, most people who have landlines probably also have answering services and caller ID, so we're additionally selecting for people who answer unknown numbers rather than letting them go to the machine.
Fourth, our recipient needs to be able to participate in the survey, so we're also selecting for people who speak the language(s) in which the survey is being administered.
Finally, after all this, most people will just hang up once they figure out they're being polled, so in sum, we're selecting for people who:
have landlines;
are usually at home during our calling centre's office hours;
customarily answer unknown numbers;
speak the language(s) in which the survey is administered; and
are actually interested in responding to surveys.
Any one of these factors is likely to introduce very serious bias into our results; all of them taken together are going to render our data practically meaningless for most purposes.
Now, understand that this still represents less selection bias than trying to do demographic surveys by reblogging Tumblr polls.

Tag your age if you wanna bc I was just thinking about how I have used floppy disks before (I'm 25 and used them in elementary computer lab) but my 22 y.o. brother hasn't which is so weird to me like 3 years isn't a long time at all to me
#I'm wondering if im an outlier in the 25 year old demographic bc i remember bringing my floppy disk home from 2nd grade#and my dad laughing and being like our computer doesn't even have a drive for it anymore#like we didn't HAVE to use them at home bc obviously not everyone had a home computer#but it was a kind of 'if you have a computer bring this to your parents and they can demonstrate how it works!'#'look how you can take your files home isn't tech amazing!'#but i just learned that the school had old computers lol#polls#reilly.txt

I'm not American, but grew up in a country that is REALLY used to centering American opinions. I'd love to see how many people here are actually American, and how many are just accepting of a lot of American content.

okay genuinely fascinating thing to me: despite the degree to which doing voter fraud became a meme, every poll/survey of people taken asking "did you do voter fraud?" has the answer being no for the vast majority of people. like, even after we, the mods, basically went 'we are not forbidding fraud and are tacitly encouraging it' people still didn't. and some of that had to be like me, ie, mostly laziness, right? but also it's FASCINATING to me that even given the fact we all said "you can break the rules all you want" most people didn't break the rules like what does that say psychologically i'm so. curious.
