The path from successful character actor to becoming a star is difficult. It’s even harder when you’re self-destructive. Tom Sizemore, who has died aged 61 after a brain aneurysm, will be best remembered for his roles in Saving Private Ryan, as Tom Hanks’s wise sergeant, and in Heat, as the muscle in Robert De Niro’s bank-robbing crew.
His characters were often informed by their volatility: affable nihilism could explode into violence, which made him a natural player of bent cops and detectives, as believable in straight roles as in over-the-top variations, such as Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. But his own personality bore many of those same traits. His career was sidelined repeatedly by addictions to heroin and methamphetamines, and his peripatetic drug-fuelled sex life led to repeated cases of domestic violence.
In 1998, after starring as the criminal gangster boss John Gotti in the television film Witness to the Mob, Sizemore received a visit from De Niro and his mother, who forced him into rehab. Steven Spielberg then hired him for Private Ryan, provided Sizemore be drug-tested regularly, and threatening to reshoot all his scenes if he failed a single test.
Five years later, on the verge of television success as the lead in Robbery Homicide Division, he was kicked off the set of a movie, Piggy Banks, accused of molesting an 11-year-old female actor, and convicted of domestic violence against his then girlfriend, “Hollywood madam” Heidi Fleiss. The double scandal contributed to the TV show’s cancellation.
The two sides of Sizemore’s talent could be traced back to childhood. Born in Detroit, he was the son of Thomas Sr, a lawyer and philosophy professor, and Judith (nee Schannault), who worked in the city ombudsman’s office. A self-described “wayward, angry teen”, he was drawn to acting after watching Montgomery Clift, James Dean and Marlon Brando playing such roles, and by De Niro in Taxi Driver.
He was also influenced by his father’s two brothers. His sober father won a scholarship to Harvard; his uncles were exuberant denizens of a world of drugs and crime. Sizemore tried for years to produce a script about them, An Honest Thief, written by his lawyer brother Aaron, which nearly got made in 2014, starring Sizemore and Danny Trejo. It fell through; a much different version, Good Thief, eventually appeared, without Sizemore, in 2021.
He studied theatre at Wayne State University, Detroit, taking a master’s at Temple, in Philadelphia. He began in off-Broadway theatre in New York; his friends included James Gandolfini, John McGinley and Edie Falco, with whom he had a relationship.
His first film role was in Lock Up (1989), and among his other three roles that year was a part in Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July. He did Blue Steel (1990) and Point Break (1991) for Kathryn Bigelow, the Wesley Snipes vehicle Passenger 57 (1992), and the Quentin Tarantino-scripted True Romance (1993), directed by Tony Scott, where he turned down the part originally offered him because he did not want to beat up Patricia Arquette on screen, and suggested Gandolfini, in his first Hollywood movie, for the role.
During the filming of Natural Born Killers (1994) he and Juliette Lewis began an affair; for four months they stayed in her mansion, doing drugs and having sex. “Temptation is impossible for me to resist,” he said. “Come on, this is Hollywood … it’s in the job description.”
From there he played Bat Masterson opposite Kevin Costner’s Wyatt Earp (1994) and was excellent in Bigelow’s overlooked Strange Days (1995). He had earned a lead role, which came in Peter Hyams’s The Relic (1997), but another small though telling part in Enemy of The State (1998), along with Private Ryan, seemed to lock him into supporting roles.
In his memoir By Some Miracle I Made it Out of There (2013), Sizemore detailed a long affair with the actor Elizabeth Hurley. In 1996 he married Maeve Quinlan, who had also been in Natural Born Killers; they divorced three years later amid accusations of drug use and physical abuse.
He had leads in three TV movies before Robbery Homicide Division, based on the original Michael Mann script that eventually became Heat. When he was not charged with molestation Sizemore returned to Piggy Banks (retitled Born Killers, to capitalise on his notoriety). Fifteen years later, the child actor, now 26, sued him for $3m, but a Utah court dismissed the lawsuit; Sizemore dismissed the allegations as “misconstrued”. His 2003 conviction in the Fleiss case resulted in seven months in jail after he failed drug tests during his probation.
At the same time he began a relationship with Janelle McIntire. In 2005 the couple had twin boys, named Jaden and Jagger. Yet at that point he made a video film called Triple X Tom, with Jersey Jaxin and three other porn actors, in which he claimed to have slept with Paris Hilton. When the celebrity denied it, he said he had made it up to impress the other actors . He did receive an XRCO award nomination as “Best New Stud”. When McIntire divorced him in 2006, he began an affair with Maxine Entwistle, the former wife of the Who bassist John.
Arrests for drug possession and spousal battery followed. He appeared on two Celebrity Rehab shows in 2010 and reunited with Fleiss on Dr Phil (2013). He ping-ponged between scandals and small parts in as many as 16 films in a year, yet still held recurring parts in series such as Hawaii Five-O and Shooter. He was dropped from Shooter when, after accidentally running over a stunt man, he was convicted in 2017 of two charges of domestic abuse against a girlfriend. He was allowed to finish his probation sentence despite a 2019 arrest for heroin possession. His last big film was playing Liam Neeson’s FBI rival William Sullivan in Felt (2017).
Sizemore wrote in his memoir: “There are so many guys who had good lives, great lives, and blew it … I think there are some guys who think they don’t deserve to have good lives.”
He is survived by his sons.

‘Stardust’ gave him the space to grow
BY MARK OLSEN Los Angeles Times (X) AUG. 5, 2007
Tumblr media
In “Stardust,” the character Tristan Thorne finds himself in the fantastic realm of Stormhold, where he must protect a star, fallen from the sky in the form of a beautiful young woman, from all manner of dangers and pitfalls, including pirates, witches and ruthless princes.
Tristan is played by Charlie Cox, 24, who found himself plunged into a leading role as a romantic foil opposite Claire Danes and alongside such mega-wattage costars as Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Yet before he could set off on his magical journey of Hollywood enchantment, Cox faced what turned out to be perhaps the biggest challenge of the role -- simply winning the part.
Director, producer and co-writer Matthew Vaughn first saw Cox on an audition tape the actor had done for another project and didn’t think he fit the part of Thorne. Vaughn, already having seen hundreds of actors for Tristan, eventually gave in to the casting director and agreed to meet Cox. As soon as the young actor entered the room Vaughn knew he’d found his Tristan.
Almost.
As so much of the story revolves around the burgeoning romance between Tristan, a shop boy yearning for a life of adventure, and Yvaine, the fallen star, Vaughn couldn’t fully commit to Cox until he found his leading lady as well.
“The whole point was to find the couple,” explained Cox. “Matthew’s very serious about this. Chemistry on screen, you can’t act it, it’s got to just be there. So he said, ‘I can’t just cast one of you.’ ”
Vaughn knew he was asking a lot of Cox, putting him on the cusp of a big break while also potentially setting him up for a whole lot of nothing.
“I said to poor Charlie, ‘You haven’t got the part until I find Yvaine,’ ” recalled Vaughn, “because it’s about having the right chemistry. I might find an Yvaine and suddenly you’re not right. So I said, ‘You’re going to have to bear with me for a bit.’ And so every time we auditioned the girl, they auditioned with Charlie.”
“Stardust,” based on the book by Neil Gaiman and co-written by Jane Goldman, has a very specific tone and feel, something like a pop-up storybook come to life. Along their way Tristan and Yvaine must fight off a witch who wants to cut out Yvaine’s heart for everlasting life, a set of princes scheming after the jewel around her neck to ascend to the throne of Stormhold, and assorted other extraordinary perils. Grounding this all is the rather sweet, slightly screwball relationship that emerges between Tristan and Yvaine.
As Tristan, Cox somehow manages to walk a tightrope between matinee-idol dashing and puckish whimsy, as the film veers from a childlike innocence to an absurdist, Candide-style picaresque. He largely functions as the audience’s emissary to a world of magic and wonder, where anything might and does happen.
As the story progresses, his character evolves from sweet, simple bumbler to swashbuckling adventure hero. The lack of baggage viewers have toward Cox from previous roles is part of what helps to make his transformation convincing.
“That’s why I wanted an unknown,” said Vaughn. “You genuinely see him grow in front of you without realizing it. If it’s Orlando Bloom all geeked up, you know he’s going to take off his glasses and get a new haircut -- ‘Hey, I’m Orlando, the hero.’
“A lot of people could play the nerd part well, the awkward teen, but couldn’t play the hero. And a lot of people could play the hero well but couldn’t do the nerdy guy.”
A stepped-up challenge
Cox, a London native, dropped out of drama school when he was cast in a small role in “The Merchant of Venice” starring Al Pacino. He would then land a supporting role as the brother of Sienna Miller (a “Stardust” costar) in “Casanova.”
None of his experiences quite prepared him for the physical and emotional challenges of playing the lead in a film such as “Stardust,” where suddenly he was working nearly every single day for four months and sharing major screen time with major stars.
“It really helped my character,” said Cox of his own amazement and bewilderment at finding himself with such a plum role. “In the same way that Tristan is in the story, I’m entering uncharted territory. Every day is something I’ve not experienced before. When I think back on my experiences on the film, and even to some extent doing this stuff” -- and with this he casts both hands around the plush hotel suite in which he is sitting, acknowledging the catered lunch, the inquiring journalist and the small cabal of handlers in the next room -- “I’m bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, a bit like a rabbit in the headlights and trying to keep myself together.”
At the recent Los Angeles premiere of “Stardust,” Cox looked dorkily dapper in a three-piece suit and cheerfully posed for photos with all of his costars. He worked his way down to the farthest reaches of the press line, daring to go where bold-faced names rarely do. He needed to be frequently prodded along by a minder, having not yet mastered the tricky maneuver of the polite but definitive disengagement.
As he entered the lobby of the theater he was greeted by a coterie of the well-wishers and glad-handers who attend such events. Soon after, De Niro and Pfeiffer entered through the same doors and Cox was suddenly swept aside by a celebrity undertow, momentarily lost as the crowd rolled toward his costars.
The Hollywood pecking order has a way of constantly reminding who fits where, but for now Cox is more than happy with what “Stardust” has done for him.
“I know people complain about it, ‘Oh, this junket’s a lot of work,’ ” he said earlier. “But right now, this is what you work toward. I’ve done films where I would have loved to have been asked what it was like to do the movie, how I got the role or how I feel about this business, but I’ve just not been significant enough.”

I've been in the CK fandom for a long time, since season 1, but I've really seen Silverusso become rather popular starting in season 4. I think this is due to Terry being re-introduced, Johnny's character unfortunately declining in writing, and just the strangeness of KK3 in general.
Seriously, I never watched the KK movies until I watched CK--when I went back and watched them, I was absolutely blown away by the Daniel and Terry dynamic more than any other dynamic in the movies (except Miyagi and Daniel, for platonic and parental reasons <3). Even in CK, it's Terry and Daniel who hold the main appeal for me even now, more than any other pair. By far. (Though I do like Terry and Kreese's now-toxic-comrade-in-arms dynamic even if I don't ship them, and really like all of Daniel and Sam's scenes!)
Anyway, there's something about Silverusso that makes it this almost Wolf/Little Red thing. They constantly have this going on despite Daniel being a grown man in CK (I think Macchio's wide-eyed perky sweetness and TIG's sophistication adds to this Big Time). It just never really goes away. Also the strange sensual undertones in every interaction they have. It feels almost Bronte-like to me. Like a gothic romance that wouldn't be out of place in Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre or something. Passionate and dark and deep and barely restrained.
And yet, on a lighter note, perhaps in an AU--I think Terry and Daniel would get along fabulously well if you took away Terry's darker angels. They have a lot in common despite their differences, and there's a strangely magnetic draw between them. Also, I think they can be quite humourous together.
On a more shallow note, they look good together, being the absolute opposites on the male spectrum of good looks. Daniel is eternally youthful, doe-eyed and pretty, and Terry's just really handsome in a traditionally masculine way; tall, dark and charming.
In your opinion, what makes Silverusso so appealing? Are there any other pairings they remind you of?
Could you please write an essay on why you find Silverusso so appealing? Why yes indeed, I could, Nonnie! Thank you!
A lot of things you have already mentioned, the Brontë-like dark romanticism between them is certainly a draw for me, the... primalness of it all.
Here goes!
Now, I think that primal attraction is there in all Daniel's 'rivalries', ahem, but these were all boys who, in truly toxic masculine way, have no other outlet for deep, overwhelming feelings than helpless, angry violence.
Terry is much more dangerous, but also much more attractive: his violence, his power, is calculated.
Now before I go on I have to say that I have a thing for strong men, OK. And by strong I do not mean beefcakes. Daniel LaRusso is a strong boy who has grown into a very strong man. Loving, reliable, responsible, sweet, funny, he does chores, he flirts, he dances, and he will sock anyone who harasses you in the nose. The strange thing about Daniel is that he often is at the receiving end of harassment, too, sexual even, and so many women will relate. He's a bit fluid with women: 100% protective mode with Kumiko, though both Amanda and Ali are not the type - they will fuck people up when they look wrong at Daniel and Daniel likes that, too. Poor boy - because he is an eternal boy - really needs backups, and his father figures keep dying on him (though he had decades with Mr. Miyagi; still, that abandonment wound with Mr. LaRusso had already cut him, and deep).
I forever headcanon Daniel's father as Robert De Niro, because Ralph has played De Niro's son on stage and Joe Pesci's cousin in My Cousin Vinny, so I imagine his father to be a strong, working class Italian-American man, like the father in A Bronx Tale-loving, loyal, firm too, hardworking, the type a small boy would idolise as invincible- and then he gets sick. And that rock of a man wastes away before Daniel's eyes. And he tells him to take care of his Mama and Daniel, all but 8, does. Because he has to be a man but he still is a man like Daniel. Much different from those Soprano types, because he is strong enough to be his soft, sensitive self. That takes guts.
Oh, and - some spice with all the sugar: he would 100% kill a man. "Why didn't you kill [Kreese]?" "I wish you would have killed him."
And now you mix that with Terry.
Now Terry Silver is a strong man. And not because he could kill you with his pinkie - although he could probably kill you with his pinkie. But the man gives zero fucks, while having the brain and brawn to back it up. It takes dedication not only to become a Tae Kwon Do master, but stay one until his 70's! He's from money, but he flaunts those rules; he's camp af, surrounds himself with pretty young boys and his best friend is John Kreese: his parents would not approve. But he's still cultured, well traveled, smart with his money, extremely smart about people. He has a moral code about loyalty but God knows what it actually is. He both cares for people and throws them under the bus when they least expect it and to his credit as a person, he's really tried to temper those destructive impulses. For all we know he has spent the last 30 years trying to conduct his own power, madness, maybe even genius into something socially acceptable and who prompted that?
Daniel LaRusso and his honest sweetness, loyalty, and latently murderous impulses.
What a cocktail.
What an intense fascination Terry must have felt for him. He knew right away: "You like that, Mr. LaRusso?"
"Yeah. I like that."
What did he do after meeting Daniel LaRusso and failing to procure and defeat him?
Go on a massive bender and turn his life around.
And then of course, to mention something that may not be everyone's cup of tea: the power exchange between the two.
Daniel's a sweet boy, but he's also a bit of a brat. Sometimes he really wants to be put in his place (possibly in the calm, firm way I imagine his father used to do, but again, those are simply my headcanons). He needles Johnny a few times until he snaps but if you see how Daniel reacts to being manhandled it's quite atypical. Sometimes he fights but when the other is clearly stronger, he turns to putty in their hands. Also, if he really didn't want to be told off by Mr. Miyagi after angrily snapping at him in the first film, he could have actually gone home when he said he would, got on his bike and cycled away. He didn't. He wanted attention.
Terry literally says he likes that attitude on him. He loves the bickering, and he loves putting Daniel in his place too. Most people would probably not want a relationship with somebody if you're constantly circling the edge of violence. But Daniel loves it, seeks it out, and when it happens, goes completely gorgeous, doe-eyed and soft! And other than with Johnny and Chozen, who, as boys, don't have enough countrol not to let the spats with Daniel become very, very dangerous (they both almost killed him) Terry has great control. Terry would never accidently kill him. Terry hardly so much as touches him in tkk3 and even when he fights him, he does it in a calculated way (that armgrip in the fight in "Extreme Measures" was very painful, but as a sensei pointed out - a little lower and he would have pulverised Daniel's elbow. He didn't, because he didn't want to). So if you want to fight, Terry is actually the safer one to do it with (unless he wants to kill you. Which he doesn't, acutally? He didn't kill Chozen or Johnny when he had all the chance in the world).
I also find it very telling Daniel didn't go back for Kumiko - which honestly I think was a mistake - but married Amanda, who in looks and demeanor might as well have been Terry's sister.
So the innocent sweet boy with a dark edge meets the big bad wolf with a chance of redemption, there is passion, there's yin and yang, they're both hot, they both(?) like women too, they're well acted, Ralph and Thomas are interesting artists and fun in interviews... there's just a lot there. It's not a juvenile story, but when they started it they were both in their late twenties and now both men are in their sixties. It can be a little adult and a little complicated. They can handle it.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012): My review
The winter season has arrived, what better way to enjoy the chilly weather than watching a romance movie while snucking inside your warm blanket. One of my personal favorite movies to watch during the winter is Silver Linings Playbook by the director David. O Russell. First presented in 2012, this unique movie has all of the good qualities required in a great romance like the chemistry, the conflict, and even some comedy. No questions why it has been nominated for 8 different Oscars and won 1 of them.
Tumblr media
Quick summary: Silver Linings Playbook tells a story of a man named Pat who had been put in a mental institution for having an unknown mental breakdown. After getting discharged, he comes back and lives with his parents. One time while having dinner at a friend’s house, Pat meets Tiffany, a person who’s also mentally ill, specifically sex addiction. They get on with each other just because of the fact that they both have mental issues and are “crazy.” They make a deal with each other that benefits both of them and from there, their love story begins.
The first thing that I really like about the movie is that it’s a very well written story. Silver Linings Playbook is really catchy and it got me sucked into it when Tiffany appears. The director and the writers also didn’t rush the story line and let Tiffany and Pat come together very naturally, exactly how I imagined two people that came out of broken relationships would react when getting into another relationship. David Russell even included many comedy details with the participation of Chris Tucker in the role of Pat’s friend from the mental institution. These comedy elements makes the movie become less intense from all the mental health issues of the main characters and makes the movie become more enjoyable in general. I love the way that the director builds up two storylines that are very related to each other. It gives more room for the producers to show more characteristics and different aspects about the characters, especially Pat.
Silver Linings Playbook is such a relatable movie. Although not everybody has the same mental issues as people in the movie does, we can see how we all have a little bit of craziness inside each of us. Everybody has their own problems like for example, Pat Sr. has OCD. These are all really normal real life problems, real life tragedy and it makes the movie become really realistic and close to the audiences. Director David Russell also did a great job in portraying people with mental health, specifically bipolar disorder. He shows the audiences the suffering, the obstacles that people like Pat and Tiffany have to go through and even the medicines that they have to use or how those meds affect them.
Tumblr media
The performances of the cast in this movie is absolutely amazing. Robert De Niro has really shown his class in the movie and this is easily one of my most favorite De Niro performances of all time. As a person who doesn't really watch a lot of Bradley Cooper’s movies, Cooper has really impressed me with his performance in Silver Linings Playbook. He had really succeeded in playing a character that had been through tragedies and having a lot of inner struggles. Lastly, I really can’t give enough compliments to Jennifer Lawrence for her performance. If I have to use one word to describe Jennifer Lawrence's performance, I would use amazing. From the facial expressions to the way she says the dialogue, in some way she must have felt really connected with her character. Jennifer Lawrence really deserved her Oscar award for this role.
Silver Linings Playbook is one of the best romances I have ever seen for a long time  and it is up there with the Notebook for one of the best romances of all time in my opinion. This movie is definitely worth rewatching and I hope to hear more discussions about it since it's an underrated movie. Besides portraying mental health problems in a very relatable way, this movie also shows the importance of family, friends and also love in general in any person’s life. It also shows the importance of entertainment and art when dancing has helped Tiffany and Pat so much in dealing with their problems, art is the thing that has connected them. David. O Russell has created such a unique love story of two “crazy” but also inspiring people.

Screen icons headed for blockbuster Cannes festival
Tumblr media
PARIS
Heroes and villains! Screen legends and scandal! Indiana Jones, Martin Scorsese and Johnny Depp! The script for the 76th Cannes Film Festival, which opens next Tuesday, suggests it will be a blockbuster.
Hollywood is descending en masse on the French Riviera for the world's leading film shindig, which runs from May 16 to 27.
But it is striking that most of its big stars are icons who made their names in the 20th century.
Harrison Ford will receive a special homage when the 80-year-old's final outing as the whip-cracking archaeologist in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" gets its world premiere.
Martin Scorsese, also 80, will launch his epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" alongside stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
Michael Douglas will receive an honorary Palme d'Or at the opening ceremony, Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore team up for "May December" from celebrated indie director Todd Haynes, and Jude Law dons the crown of Henry VIII in "Firebrand".
Tumblr media
The king of quirky, Wes Anderson, will premiere "Asteroid City" and bring a typically star-packed cast to the red carpet, this time including Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson.
As if any more attention-grabbing selections were needed, the opening film is Johnny Depp's so-called comeback, "Jeanne du Barry", testing his French accent as King Louis XV.
It is his first role since a defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard involving bitter allegations of domestic abuse, and arrives just after the film's director and star, Maiwenn, was herself accused of assaulting a journalist in a Paris restaurant.
Depp will be joined by his daughter, Lily Rose, who stars in "The Idol", a TV series playing out of competition, produced by musician Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye. It had a tumultuous production with reports of major rewrites and reshoots.
It's a stronger year for women than normal, with a record seven female directors among the 21 competing for the Palme d'Or top prize.
One has been another source of scandal, however, with France's Catherine Corsini only added at the last minute (with "Homecoming") following controversy over an underage sex scene.
They will face a jury led by Ruben Ostlund, a two-time Palme-winner for "Triangle of Sadness" and "The Square".
There are five previous winners in the competition, including Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda, Germany's Wim Wenders, Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Italy's Nanni Moretti and another two-time winner, Britain's Ken Loach.
In a recent interview with AFP, Ostlund joked that he would be scrupulously fair if 86-year-old Loach's "The Old Oak" seduces the jury: "I will definitely work very hard to get over my own egoistic goals of being the first director with three Golden Palmes."
But arthouse fans are perhaps most excited for a rare appearance by Britain's Jonathan Glazer ("Under the Skin", "Sexy Beast") with a romance set in the Auschwitz concentration camp, "The Zone of Interest".
Another lauded Brit, Steve McQueen, will present a four-hour documentary about wartime Amsterdam, "Occupied City", out of competition.
Star of the moment and so-called "Internet Daddy" Pedro Pascal is also expected alongside Ethan Hawke for a "queer Western" short film by Spain's Pedro Almodovar.
And the festival is set to close on a colourful note with the latest animation from Pixar Studios, "Elemental". It is set in a city where residents made from fire, air and water must learn to live together.

Super late September Sum-Up!! September was a real growth month, and I discovered so many good things. Here’s the rundown:
Books: Two words- WILDER GIRLS. I finished this book wayyy back at the beginning of the month, and no friendship has ever pierced my heart the way byatt and hetty’s has. It’s a sci-fi thriller that just gets more and more tense as the book goes on. Not a perfect book but it’s deeply captivating and I read like 85% of it in one day lying in my bed for hours on end. The ending gets messy, and it’s maybe a bit too open-ended for my taste, but I would recommend it to all my sci-fi besties. if i hear anybody boil this down to some tropey romance I’m showing up at your house.
I also read Conviction by Kelly Loy Gilbert because of a recommendation from one of my favorite blogs!(technically finished it today but it’s a september book) and I found it exhilarating. Such a novel. I have to admit that my main issue was how there’s so much baseball imagery and description that i didn’t understand, but everything else was golden. I was speed reading the last 100+ pages at a school yesterday and it was a race. All of the characters are complex and you just feel so much about each of them, whether good or bad these are full fleshed human beings with the way the author writes
Movies: Shang-Chi— great movie but some marvel guy at the theatre started grilling me on why I liked it which killed the mood.
Wind River- it could’ve been a great movie, and it’s pretty good, but this whole message about natives and their girls and the dangers they face and how nobody’s searching for these missing girls is heavily diluted by the fact that the movie is headed and mainly focuses on two famous white people. this story set up and statistic at the end seems very hypocritical when you feature two starring white people. if this were a native story, you would use native women to play it out. do better
A Bronx Tale- watched it on a whim and had a merry little good time this was robert de niro’s reader-insert fantasy film 😵‍💫🙏 for realsies though idk i kind of liked it the little teen couple was awkward and cute but the little boys yelling out slurs was unsettling. kind of comforting i’m gonna watch again.
Music- big month music wise for me i’ve expanded my taste and become hotter in the process
Artists— Tei Shi and Nasty Cherry owned me this month. Tei Shi shifted the world when Crawl Space released, and Charli XCX knew what she was doing when she put Nasty Cherry together. Stream their discographies I’m bonafide obsessed. Nasty Cherry is a personal fave but Tei Shi is objectively better and is carrying massive amounts of talent
Songs: My body by NC, Lucky by NC, How Far by Tei Shi, Creep by Tei Shi, GEMINI FEED BY BANKS, Everything is Embarrassing by Sky Ferrira, Johanna by Suki Waterhouse
Personal: I started journaling more consistently, and adjusting to my siblings at college is going a lot smoother than expected!! also mental health was fluctuating but overall decent
video essays: i can’t remember what i watched this month or october but I watched a bojack horseman video with this soothing british guy’s voice that really broke down bojack’s relationships with each character, and I particularly enjoyed the section on Princess Caroline and her never-ending movie. Her speech about ‘ the tough part of the movie’ and how bojack gives her a problem to solve and distract her from life. He keeps her working towards a goal because there is just so much to ‘fix’ with this man. He ‘kept’ ( i don’t like to imply he had that much hold over her. even when he did) her story from being over in PC’s own eyes. god bless whatever writer put her and jonah together
decent month overall and october was even better. living a pretty good life atm

90′s Prestige Horror ranking:The Monster/Villain
.....This ones hard ,cause honestly the villains/monsters  are pretty solid  in these 90′s Prestige horror movies .I have ranked and reranked this one ,only my number one has remained consistant .Just keep in mind this list is just for fun and arbitrary .Also spoilers fro Sleepy Hollow and Wolf
5.Ray Park/Christopher Walken and Miranda Richardson as Headless Horseman and Lady Mary Van Tassel
.......So if Headless Horseman himself was the only villain he’d be easilly be number two.He is terrifying ,a relentless unstoppable kjller ,with Park bringing physicality when he is headless ,and Walken bringing an uneasiness and intensity (And those sharp teeth are horrifying and badass ).Yeah  him going “ARRRGH” is a bit silly   but he is an effective horrifying monster ......But theres a problem....He’s a henchman ....To Queenie from Blackadder .OK thats not fair ,Miranda Richardson is a terrific actress ,and she has played some good villains(Mrs Tweedy from Chicken Run comes to mind ).....But LAdy Van Tassel is not one of them .First half of the movie she’s rather dull and a minor character, and once the big reveal happens  her motives  and plan are super convuluted .Now hers and the Horsemans final fate is fantastic but as a whole I feel her inclusion is one of the weakest parts of the movie
Tumblr media
4.James Spader  as  Stewart Swinton in Wolf
This guy is such a slimeball .Stewart .He is trying to steal the main character Will’s job ,is sleeping with his wife and is just a opportunistic douche .However he goes from jerk to monster when he becomes a werewolf ,reveling in killling among other things. He is a creep and is scary ..What holds him back is sometimes Spader chews too much scenery,he’s not a major focus of the film and honestly ,he is kind of one note compared to some other villains here  in this group.Still a good baddie though
Tumblr media
3.John Malkovich as Edward Hyde in Mary Reilly
So this is a very interesting take on Edward Hyde cause from what I can tell he is close to the book :He’s a man younger then Jekyll and is not the traditional monster most versions portray him as .Part of this is because the film wants  a darkly romantic Hyde  with his relationship with Mary (Which doesnt quite work but thats an entirely diffrent list there ) but it makes him interesting .Malkovich plays Hyde with a playfulness and youthful quality ,while also being very soft spoken while clearly enjoying both messing with Mary’s head and engaging in his dark activities .The big thing is the film tries to both make Hyde more murderous.....While weirdly not showing it .That said Malkovich himself is great and I wish the performance was to a better script .As it is it’s a highlight of the film
Tumblr media
2.Robert De Niro as the Creation in  Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
So the modern perception of The Frankenstein monster is as a lumbering sympathetic  childlike creature......That is not the monster from the book ,and this film  delivers a book accurate monster ,in terms of personality .The Creation is intelligent and philosophical ,and is without a question a villain, albiet an incredibly tragic one .Throughout his existance he is treated with fear, hatred and hostility ,and thus responds with violence .I adore his design, really feeling like he is a patchwork being made of several corpses .The casting of De Niro is initially  distracting but he is so excellent I got used to it .He steals this entire movie .
Tumblr media
1.Gary Oldman as Count Dracula in Bram Stokers Dracula
I ADORE this performance .There have been MANY great Draculas .....Oldman is my second favorite ,behind Christopher Lee .He both a brooding romantic  while also being a intimidating powerful demonic force .Like this is the role that made Gary Oldman a superstar for a reason .I think he plays the romance well  while also being a terrifying creature of darkness .You feel how powerful Dracula is  .I also like alll the diffrent shapes he can take,he can be a wolf monster,a bat creature,he can be old, he can be young ,he can be whatever he wants really .You get a sense of power but also of a broken soul.He looms over this entire movie  and is easilly the best thing about the film

Good morning! Whats your favorite show/movie? Who are your favorite characters? Why do you like them so much? Also!! Did you have a good sleep?
Okay so I was a film major for a while, and I have opinions.
Penny Dreadful
I love this show. Like, so much. I adore it. I can not get enough of that show. Just all of the imagery, and the fantastic writing and acting. The episode intro alone is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Eva Green is a goddess and I love everything she’s been in. The take on classic horror stories is So Good, and it actually became the inspiration for my Gay Frankenstein story! (Started as a stitch AU, and then went completely OC after I had Ideas) but the show itself is so intimate? I think it’s largely that the period they’re in, everything was so repressed and restricted. So when the characters break out of those moments, it’s more meaningful. And the love-hate relationship between Ms. Ives and Malcolm in season one? Exquisite.  I could literally write essay’s about this show, but I’ll restrain myself and just say: it’s the best ensemble show I’ve ever seen. The characters come together, but they also each have their own distinct lives that sometimes intersect, but in s2 especially, are quite separate. They are constant with one another like ensemble shows usually portray. Also gothic horror and romance? My absolute favorite.
Anything by Guillermo del Toro
This man Owns My Entire Soul. I’m not even joking, everything he writes and directs is perfection. Crimson Peak is probably my favorite (I have a stitch AU for this too ;) ) because again, Gothic horror and romance. I’m a slut for that shit. Also Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain? Delightful casting. I think it’s obvious by now that I love tragic relationships, so their dynamic is *chef’s kiss* amazing. they’re so damaged. And this quote right here is one of the BEST things I’ve ever read:
“But the horror... The horror was for love. The things we do for love like this are ugly, mad, full of sweat and regret. This love burns you and maims you and twists you inside out. It is a monstrous love and it makes monsters of us all.”
Engrave that on my headstone, please?? I’ve got a sort-of Dorian Gray AU (it’s delightful) that’s basically built on this entire premise. Mitch makes the mistake of falling in love with Stiles, and does many terrible things because of it. Mostly to himself, at least.
I think my love of Crimson Peak is very closely tied with The Shape of Water. another beautiful movie, I could wax poetic about this forever. it was beautifully written, and such an artistic movie. I love the way it was filmed, and the set design, and all of the subtle imagery. Such as Elisa’s apartment being cast in cooler tones, it always felt very damp and had evidence of water damage, compared to Giles’, a mirror image of her own, in more warm tones. This is another one I could (and have) write essays about. There is so much packed into this movie, from the themes on toxic masculinity and entitlement, to the conversation on queerness and race and disability, and how all the various relationships are portrayed. Like. there is so much to pick apart in this movie.
Aside from that, ofc Hell Boy deserves an honorable mention because i grew up on those movies. I’m pretty sure the Golden Army especially is responsible for who I am today, given all the lore on the fae in that universe. Wow, that explains so much about me... Also one of my first WoW characters was an elf named Nuala xD I still have her, too, and it’s been like 12 years lol
Near-Future Sci-Fi
Sci-fi is one of my favorite genres, I am a huge nerd for theoretical and astrophysics. But my favorite kind of sci-fi is the stuff that still takes place on Earth, rather than epic battles in space. Ex Machina and Annihilation are at the top of that list. Alex Garland is another writer/director that I love. He has the same kind of approach as del Toro, where he puts a lot of fine details into his work. And I love that it’s very cerebral; there are so many layers to Ex Machina. My English 101 prof actually refused to analyze it in class when I suggested it to him, because he didn’t think my class could. Basically handle? Dissecting that movie? Because a lot of it comes across as very surface level, but in some cases when you look deeper, it’s actually suggesting the opposite of what you might think at first glance. (And he was right, my fellow students were awful. I miss that class though, it was one of my favorites T_T Mr. Ryder was an awesome dude and super chill.)
Morgan is another good example. As you can see, I fucking love androids lol. Which brings me to another of my all time favorite movies: Cloud Atlas. I could literally watch this movie endlessly, I love it so much. The acting, the writing, the filming, all of it is top notch. And one thing they did in the movie that didn’t come across in the book, was reusing the same actors through the different eras in the book. That was just so neat, because it really encapsulates how connected these souls are, as we follow the threads of their story throughout time. If you haven’t seen the movie, I can’t recommend it enough.
Another one I always think of alongside Cloud Atlas, even though they aren’t related at all, is Predestination. It’s a great movie that explores the idea of fate and free will in a really clever way, utilizes time travel in a very organized way that I think was neat (think Umbrella Academy. They even use briefcases! As you can see, I love sci-fi bureaucracy, it’s fun. In fact The Bureau is another movie I enjoyed) and the main character is actually, explicitly trans, which was cool. You basically get to see the entire story of their life, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s just. So good. Mindfuckery galore.
Shoot, and I almost forgot! Arrival! That is one of the best movies, and another one I could watch nonstop. It focuses on mathematics and linguistics and I swear to god, I almost altered my entire college course because of this movie. Amy Addams is brilliant, Jeremy Renner is so soft and nerdy, and again, it has an amazing take on time travel. I am very particular about how time is handled in Sci-fi, and this portrayal was one of my favorite. (Most of my physics studies have been dedicated to the theory of time, so like. Strong Opinions.)
Fantasy
Stardust! It wasn’t until Good Omens can out that I realized Neil Gaiman is responsible for most of the stories I loved as a kid lol, and I had no idea he wrote stardust! But that is such a beautiful movie (I have a Stardust AU lol) and it’s definitely one of my comfort movies. Captain Shakespeare is one of the best characters ever, bless Robert de Niro. I would die for him. Fun fact, i had no idea Ipswitch was a real place until like. 2019. I 100% thought it was made up for the movie 😂
Alongside Stardust, I’ve always loved The Golden Compass. It’s fantasy, but also with that old-timey steampunk science feel, which is so fun and surprisingly difficult to find!
Mortal Engines also has the same kind of feel, and it was such an epic movie in every sense of the word. I’m a little sad that after all the work that went into it, it didn’t get a dedicated following or fan base, because I feel there’s so much potential in it. But at the same time, fandom tends to gather around media that has plenty of flaws for us to repair with gold, and there wasn’t much room for that in Mortal Engines.
I’m going to put Jupiter Ascending here even though it technically fits with the sci-fi, because that section is long as fuck and also this movie has such a fantastic feel. Mila Kunis? beautiful. The CGI? beautiful. Eddy Redmayne? One of the best villain portrayals i’ve ever seen. The whole oedipal vibe he had was immaculate, as was their portrayal of reincarnation, and just. The world building. GOD. I get so weak for through world building. Also the fkn intergalactic bureaucracy when they’re basically at the space DMV? One of my all time favorite scenes in movie history.
Horror
I have very little room in my life for horror. As I said, I have strong movie opinions, especially when it comes to horror movies. I don’t like how most of them rely on cheap jump scares and overused gore and gratuitous rape scenes, instead of, y'know, actual good writing.
Which is EXACTLY why I adore It: Chapter 1 & 2. It has none of those things, but still manages to be so terrifying. They are my favorite horror movies, and I’m saying this as someone who has genuine childhood trauma bc of the novel. Like. I couldn’t shower/take baths alone until I was almost 10 T_T When I was 6-7 and saw kids play by storm drains, I would run over screaming about how Pennywise was going to get them. Like, I had issues man. I was terrified to see the first one, and wouldn’t go until I could go with my best friend after she had already seen it, so she could warn me when something scary was about to happen 😂
And, one of my favorite aspects of the movie, and the thing that gave me Mad Respect for Any Muschietti? The way he filmed Bev and her father. They have a character who is literally being molested, but they never once have to show it. And yet their interactions are still so viscerally upsetting to watch. Sexploitation puts me off of most horror, and the fact that Muschietti doesn’t use it here, even when it would be actually somewhat justified? *chef’s kiss*. I love him.
I love horror as a concept, I’m just really picky about it because I expect the writing to be good. I don’t like short cuts. But in a lot of cases, even if I don’t enjoy the movie itself, I love to watch analysis videos on youtube! I love to see the philosophy and symbolism in different horror movies, even if i don’t like to watch the movies themselves. It’s a fun hobby.
Misc.
Then in general, some other stuff I love in no particular order:
The Internship (Bless Dylan, Stuart is such a bitch and I love him)
American Assassin (ofc. The writing itself is eh, but Mitch is my man)
Dylan’s episode of Weird City. (I actually have a lot of feelings about this one. Jordan Peele is another amazing writer/director, I really need to catch up on his works.)
Dorian Gray (*chef’s kiss*)
Rogue One (Makes me cry every time)
WARCRAFT (Obviously this is a fav. It made me so happy, words cannot express.)
Coraline and most other stop motion animation. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for that.
Literally anything associated with Tim Burton. Fun fact, when I was 12 and in middle school, I planned to decorate my future house inspired by tim burton. Like, i had Plans.
Most adaptations of Alice in Wonderland!
So! this got long as fuck! But you said you like that kind of thing lol 😂 I had kinda Eh sleep since I was up so late lmao, and I kept waking up (as usual, rip). And I’m so mad I go up for nothing! The dude I was supposed to show my listing to never showed, and is refusing to answer my calls >_> It’s been 2 hours now, and I still haven’t heard from him. But whatever, I already have a full price cash offer on the house so who cares. And that means I can play WoW all day, now!

A Bronx Tale (1993) Review
This movie displays my worst fear: greasy, angry, Italian-american teenage boys with a penchant for violent racism.
I was very impressed with Robert De Niro’s directing abilities, as this was his first of two directing credits. I think he crafted a well put together story, that especially shines when focusing on the father-son relationships between Lorenzo and Calogero, as well as Sonny and Calogero. I was pleasantly surprised with Francis Capra, who plays a nine year old Calogero. I have definitely seen worse performances from child actors, and he played the part fairly well for a kid who was ten at the time.
Robert De Niro and Chazz Palminteri both gave great performances, and created two well rounded characters with warring perspectives. I was especially a fan of Lorenzo’s character (excluding his views on interracial relationships) and seeing his relationship with his son was one of my favorite parts of the film.
The romance between Calogero and Jane was another highlight of the film. The civil rights movement was especially prominent in the 60s, so it would not make sense to not address it, especially in a place like New York. It also gave Calogero an opportunity to confront the biases of his father and his peers, and to think and form his own opinions and morals, something that was hard to do when you grew up surrounded by like-minded people.
Joe Pesci was there, which I was not expecting. Good for him. A short king.
In conclusion, bada-bing bada-boom, 7/10, pretty pretty good
(side note, shout out to @yesbelladoesstuff for recommending this movie to me, that was very lovely of you)

Great Britons
The Next Wave of Leading Men Hail From the U.K. These Are Those Men. They can act ... British. They can play Americans- often better than Yanks. And one of them could (definitely? maybe?) be the future James Bond. Get familiar with the next wave of marquee men from across the pond.
British indie filmmaking got thirty-year-old Callum Turner hooked on acting. “A Room for Romeo Brass really affected me,” Turner says of the gritty 2000 coming-of-age flick. “And I felt the same about every Al Pacino movie, and every Robert De Niro movie, and every Daniel Day Lewis movie.” After a break- through role in the latest Fantastic Beasts installment, Turner’s next gig is the right-person-wrong-time romance The Last Letter from Your Lover, opposite Shailene Woodley. But despite growing success, homegrown cinema hasn’t lost its spark for the 30-year-old. “Look, British cinema is so special because it’s magical,” Turner says with a wink. “Pure, pure magic.” Also see him in: Emma, in which he plays Frank Churchill.

1 and 24?
Thank you for the asks!!
1. Talk about your favorite film of all time (or one of them)
I’m sure some of you know by now that I absolutely love the movie Midnight Run. To be perfectly honest with you, I’m not sure if love is a strong enough word. I’m a sucker for bromance, what can I say?? Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin have such amazing chemistry and are both incredibly hilarious (Grodin steals the show for me). Robert De Niro plays a layered tough-guy with feelings (which he wants no one to see) who just wants to get away from his life as a bounty hunter. He’s tasked with taking Charles Grodin‘s character, a cocky, overly talkative accountant who embezzled money, to his boss. The movie has pretty much everything: action, comedy, romance (it’s basically a romance okay?!), emotional scenes, you name it. It is also one of the most rewatchable films I’ve ever seen and has soooo many hilariously iconic lines and perfectly casted characters. Plus, who could say no to a movie about two completely opposite dumbasses who grow to love each other?
24. What do you think is the scariest movie ever made?
Hmmm this one’s a toughie. To be honest, I don’t get scared of films too easily, but I do get creeped out by them. I’d say that I’m more of a fan of psychological horrors, actually. I think The Lighthouse or Don’t Breathe probably creeped me out/ scared me the most. Both very psychological movies with horrifying scenarios that I’d hate to be in.

Tumblr media

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Tumblr media

She has moved away and obtained a restraining order against him after Pat found her in the shower with another man and badly beat him. During his time in the clinic Pat befriends Danny McDaniels (Chris Tucker), an easygoing man who is embroiled in a legal dispute with the clinic on whether or not he is eligible to leave.  At dinner with his friend Ronnie (John Ortiz) and Ronnie's wife Veronica (Julia Stiles), Pat meets Veronica's sister Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence). They connect over dinner talking about different drugs they have taken to manage their mental illnesses. Sparks fly between Pat and Tiffany and she tries to connect by offering casual sex, but Pat keeps focusing on getting Nikki back. Tiffany tries to get closer to Pat and even offers to deliver a letter to Nikki—if, in return, he will practice dancing (which she does as a therapy) with her and partner with her in an upcoming dance competition. He reluctantly agrees and the two begin a rigorous practice regimen over the following weeks.

Wow. This was better than I expected to be. I’ll be very honest, I never really had much interest in this film. I mean it came out when I was 12 and even at that age, I never truly enjoyed watching films (which btw is the whole reason I started this blog. I want to learn how to enjoy films). Although fast paced it worked for this film. I’ve never been much of a mushy romantic, but even I can admit that this was done in a very classy way. They didn’t hyper-focus on the romance nor did they shove it down your throat and force it on you.
The one problem I had with it was that some scenes are very choppy and done way too fast but I also understand that it was to show either Pat (Bradley Cooper) or Tiffany’s (Jennifer Lawrence) frame of mind in those situations. Lets be honest, both of them were mentally ill. I don’t exactly agree with how their mental health issues were portrayed, but I’m also aware of the huge stigma that surrounds illnesses such as bipolar disorder and DID, so it didn’t exactly come as a shock.
I’m not entirely sure why but the whole dance competition scene was incredibly anxiety inducing. I found my heart beating painfully in my chest and I was violently shaking. Whether or not that was me having a panic attack out of the blue or they played the characters so well that I felt their nerves, I don’t know but I did find myself very impressed with the camera work during that scene.
As for plot, I found myself invested in it. I found myself wanting to know what put Pat in the mental institution, why he lost his job etc. (I was a bit pissed when I learned it was mainly because Nikki (Brea Bee) was cheating on him amongst other problems he was having with himself. Like why can’t there be one loyal marriage? Why is someone always cheating?) and why Tiffany was having problems herself.
Some parts were a bit predictable like the parts with the letters but what’s a film without a bit of predictability? Boring, that’s what. The parlay was actually ridiculous as was the illegal bookmaking (now remember kids, if your friend enables your gambling habit, he ain’t a friend) but overall I found myself to be very taken by and impressed with this film. I would recommend it to people who haven’t seen it before.
