manhattan, west virginia [WIP, scene snippet]

“This was fun.” Davey says quietly to the foam left in his mug, clinging to the ridges of the porcelain in a clumsy crescent. “I don’t normally…” He trails off, his voice growing uneasy, as he shuffles in his seat. “Talk to, uh…” He taps his fingers against the polka-dots, quick and rhythmic. “To people.”

Jack can feel a smile tugging at his cheek as he watches Davey’s fingers dance.

“Yeah.” He murmurs, straight from his chest. “I liked it, too.”

Slowly, tentatively, he pushes his own mug forward, the rough base scraping softly along the table like a warning. But Davey keeps his hands still, save for his ever-quickening fingers, until Jack’s knuckles brush along his.

“Maybe…” Jack lifts his eyes to peer into Davey’s own – he knows the hope must be pouring out of him like rainwater, but he can’t figure out how to stop it. “We could do this again?”

Davey’s tapping stops, his fingers clenching tight around his mug until they stain yellow-white at the joints. He stares at Jack like a deer in headlights, a moth before a flame – and above them, Jack can hear the thrumming of the diner lights, growing louder and louder with each second, as the bulbs begin to flicker and flash, tinged with blue at the edges, and if this were just two months ago, Jack would think he were going crazy, because he swears he can see the ring of colour around Davey’s pupil flashing along with them, white and gold, spreading further and further across the lines of his iris-

The bulb above them shorts out in a burst of sparks, and Davey’s chair scrapes against the floor hard enough to rattle inside Jack’s bones. It topples over with a clatter against the checkered linoleum, one of the legs jabbing Davey in the back of his calf, sharp enough to make him gasp – he slams a hand on the table behind them to steady himself, bending out of Jack’s space like the wrong end of a magnet.

“I – have to go.”

-is all Jack hears before he blinks once – and Davey’s gone, leaving burning sparks of blue and gold behind Jack’s eyelids, the diner door swinging loosely as the bell clinks overhead.

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

S4 of Camp Camp was a mixed bag for me because I like the premise of "Keep the Change" but not the execution. What the episode does is really good, but I don't like the episode itself. Anyway, I wanna talk about the whole "people can change for the worse and for the better" message.

Max changing for the better/being kind and David changing for the worse/being shitty has been set up since S2 - specifically in "Bonjour Bonquisha." For example:

Max being caring but doing it out of selfish reasons appears here for the first time as the plot revolves around Max inspiring the other campers to do something nice for David because he cannot stand him when he's miserable. This is later paralleled by the conflict Max has in S4, "Time Capsules," where he only helps Gwen to make himself feel better. Both have selfish motivation, but the difference is that the first attempt was genuine, while in the second he was forcing himself to be nice. More on this later.

David ends the episode by punching Jacob out of jealousy in front of the entire diner.

So both have previously established episodes that put their character progression into perspective. But an interesting thing about Max is that he is very much capable of care it's just that he doesn't recognize it as such. Max has several episodes where he saves/helps David and/or the camp (the two often overlap) for example: Order of the Sparrow, Bonjour Bonquisha, The Fun-Raiser, Dial M for Jasper, Cameron Campbell the Camp Campbell Camper, Camp Corp and Arrival of the Torso Takers. He also has plenty of episodes where the central plot revolves around comforting/or showing concern for Nikki: Camp Cool Kidz (trying to convince her Ered is using her), Anti-Social Network, Eggs Benefits, etc. He also stands up for Neil in "Culture Day" and learns how to be more genuine and kind to everyone in "Camp Corp". There's also the example of him learning to be nicer to Dolf in "Candy Kingpin". And all of that is before S4 in which he realizes how much he has changed and starts making an active effort to be better.

you'll notice that it gradually happens more often, but the one throughline is that even when he acts compassionate or caring, it is undercut by him using shady methods, complaining, or there being something that's in it for him. Like using David's credit card, getting people to beat up the councilors, asking for something in return (usually more dessert). But there are some examples of legit soft kindness like famously in Parents Day but also in "Dial M For Jasper" where after a remorseful look they decide it's better to lie to David and let him be content and happy rather than distress him further. And while he does complain or use shady methods, most if not all of these episodes demonstrate that he is capable of caring for and being kind to the people around him on his own accord.

now remember how earlier I said that in "Time Capsules," Max's attempts at being nice aren't genuine like in earlier episodes despite the two having the same premise? this is where that comes in: that ep is the first time he seeks character development rather than it happening TO him. In the time capsule, he struggles with the idea that he will never be happy or change for the better. the thing is, Max doesn't have to worry about if he's becoming a kinder person because he's already been doing kind things. he doesn't realize how naturally that development has happened and how genuine he can be.

like WHY save david in arrival of the torso takers? he does it because he wants to. he doesn't realize that all of the change he's gone through so far has not been directly intentional but it HAS been genuine. and all the care he exhibits from people doesn't need to be forced out of him because he's already proven he has a capacity for it multiple times.

like he cares abot people in his own flawed way thats often undercut by his little shit personality. its like he doesn't realise he cares for them while hes doing it. like why try to cheer david up? just. because. because he's annoying if he doesnt do it. why try to make nikki feel better? because it's dumb when she's panicking over platypus eggs. like he does care for people but its never an overt attempt to be kind, he just does it naturally. which is why "Time Capsule" wasn't genuine.

It's better to be genuine and flawed than to attempt to masquerade niceness as kindness. I've said it before but Max isn't meant to be nice. He is learning to be kind.

Kaidan wakes up with a start in the dark of his temporary quarters on the Citadel, heart hammering, the pleading voice of David Archer still ringing in his ears.

(Please, make it stop!)

He exhales, grinding the heels of his palms against his eyes and then wiping the sweat from his brow with a shaking hand.

Rogue geth. Cerberus scientists playing god. David Archer, hardly more than a kid, strung up on a dais begging for help.

“Fuck,” he mutters under his breath before getting out of bed. The chronometer reads 05:42, which isn’t much better than the 02:15 he’d seen before finally closing his eyes.

Not much point in giving sleep another try. The debriefing is scheduled for 07:00 sharp, and he still has some notes to put together.

A quick shower and a fresh uniform later he’s ordering coffee from a kiosk on the Presidium, blinking resentfully into the Presidium’s eternally bright afternoon lighting. To his surprise, a familiar face sits at one of the nearby tables, brooding into her own cup of coffee. At the sight of Kaidan, she pushes the chair across from her out with a foot.

“You’re up early,” Kaidan says, sliding into the offered seat. Muriel Aslany scowls at him over her nearly empty cup.

“Didn’t bother sleeping. Went for a walk instead.”

“A walk? We got here four hours ago.”

“It was a long walk.”

Kaidan grunts. “Where’s Pendergrass?”

“Tinkering with that geth electronic countermeasures mine thingy last I checked.”

“The damping mine?”

“Yeah. She wanted to improve on it. Didn’t like that you got singed.”

Kaidan rubs his shoulder, then shrugs it in a circle. The doc on the Ain Jalut had healed the burn, but the skin is still tender. He hasn’t let himself even think about the repair his armor is going to need yet. Too much else to triage, first.

(me? Digging through the lyrics of the song I'm currently listening to for a title? It's more likely than you think!)

ohhhoohoooo shit. canon era, jack leaves.

jack leaves, and that's supposed to be it. right? he got what he wanted- he got the train out west, he got a big life in a small town, and when he gets there everything is golden and sunshine and beautiful- but he doesn't feel complete, not the way he expected to.

i'm thinking that if i were to write this, i'd write it as like,, a letter fic? start with jack sending letters with shaky handwriting and dodgy spelling to the lodging house, because he knows there are some kids there who know how to read and they can relay his stories and his messages. the envelopes are always stuffed to the brim with his initial letter, and he usually includes four to six drawings in it- Santa Fe is gorgeous, just like he knew it'd be, and he wants the boys to see that he was right. maybe even sending them some money, too; he doesn't make much as a ranch hand but it's more than he thought he'd ever see, and he truthfully doesn't need that much. he doesn't know what he'd ever spend it on, so he'd rather send it to the boys who need it.

so he keeps this going, detailing all of the adventures he's been having (even with a gaping whole in his chest) and telling them about a girl he's been going steady with (one that reminds him of a certain blue eyed boy without the same spark), and this continues until one day, one of the men he's living with in the bunkhouse on the ranch brings him a letter.

david's letter is much better than anything jack could ever send. his handwriting is lovely- and a little hard for jack to read- but jack is able to figure it out eventually, and it's nice. david updates jack on the news from the lodging house, and tells jack all of the little things that the boys want him to know about. no one seems very upset at him for leaving- not from david's words, at least- but even so, reading the letter makes jack's chest tight.

and this continues on for a while. jack will send letters to the lodging house and david will respond for the boys, until jack gets a little brave and starts sending david letters directly, too. he sends the boys money and drawings and sends david his deepest, darkest secrets- how he misses new york and his "penthouse," how he loves his current job but misses his boys- how he misses katherine, and crutchie, and davey.

jack never meant to have a shallow heart. he needed to get away, he needed to escape- and he never realized that doing so would just tear his heart in half even more. he wakes every morning feeling physically better than ever- fresh air will do that to you, he assumes- but he feels like he's on his deathbed half the time because of the weight on his chest and the hole in his heart.

but he stays, because he made a commitment, and he can't back out on his dream now.

the letter-writing goes on for years. eventually, jack starts getting individual letters from racetrack and crutchie as well- they made it out of the lodging house- and jack continues to write to them alongside his writings to david. those letters to david, his davey, started so innocently- how is he doing, how is his family, the likes- but now when jack writes them he feels a tug on his heart and when he reads david's letters he finds himself flustered and he doubts he would ever be able to say these feelings out loud, but there's something there- and he knows he isn't imagining it because david feels the same, and has written the same in his letters.

i imagine when it hits the three year mark, when jack has been here for three winters, when jack is no longer the new guy and is instead helping the new ranch hands in the bunkhouse, it all feels too familiar and he aches with it.

he gets drunk on whiskey and writes a candle-lit letter about how much he misses home, because this isn't home, this will never be home. he gets drunk on whiskey and writes about the boy with the blue eyes and a fire that's still present even in his words on paper. he gets drunk on whiskey and sends the letter despite his better judgement.

the next letter he receives from david is simple. all it says is, Come home. We will be ready, and I will be waiting.

so jack goes back home, and jack finds his family again.

and jack finds david, too, and maybe his grand plan for his life never involved living in a "bachelor pad" next to a conveniently single David Jacobs, but he can't say he's complaining, either.

[Bits & Bobs] hungry like the wolf

My Halloween fic that’s longgg past overdue but is still chugging along. The little fanfic that could, if you will.

feat. Werewolf!Jack and Incubus!Davey. The E-rated section is deep under the cut

Davey taps his fingers against the side of his glass, rolls his shoulders back, then says, “So, don’t feel obligated, is what I’m trying to say. I only want to do this if we’re both interested, and for the right reasons.”

“I promise ya, the last thing I’m feelin’ is obligated,” Jack drawls. “Jus’ as long as we’re both on the same page.”

But Davey still looks uncertain.

“And you’re okay with the whole…” He makes a vague hand-wavy motion over himself. “I’m told my aura can be a touch… overwhelming, once it starts to take effect.”

“‘M not too worried,” Jack says with a shrug. “Werewolves are immune to almost everything—lycanthropy doesn’t exactly play well with other types of magic. Mother Moon tends to be pretty possessive of her children, I guess.”

“Sounds handy,” Davey says.

“‘S got its uses,” Jack agrees. “So you don’t gotta worry ‘bout enchantin’ me or nothin’.” He offers up his most charming smile. “At least, not any more than you already have.

A laugh bubbles off of Davey’s lips. His entire demeanor seems to brighten several clicks, like drawing back a curtain to let in the sun.

“That was smooth!” he accuses, sounding utterly delighted about it.

“I try,” Jack says, just as captivated, grinning right back. “Hopefully, I’m doin’ somethin’ right. You strike me as the kinda guy that’s pretty damn hard’ta impress.”

“Oh, believe me, you’re already head and shoulders above most of my past failures,” Davey says.

“You’re joking,” Jack says, disbelieving. “Been seein’ some real gems, have ya, cariño?”

“If only,” Davey scoffs. “You should’ve seen the last guy, he couldn’t even—“

Davey stops. Then Davey blushes, a flush of pink warming his face.

“Oh, there’s definitely a story there,” Jack says, drinking him in. He feels a little intoxicated, and not from the alcohol. “Spill, Jacobs.”

“There’s not much to say,” Davey lies—so terribly that it’s obvious even without the tell-tale skip in his heartbeat. “The fact that you’re not groping me under the table or visibly drooling is already an excellent sign. If we actually make it to a bed without incident I’ll be thrilled. And even then, most of them usually can’t manage to… aren’t able to…”

He trails off, awkward, and all at once the heart of the problem becomes obvious.

“Oh,” Jack realizes. “They can’t keep up with you.”

Davey’s blush deepens, which is only more kindling for the fire.

“Of course they can’t,” Jack continues, shaking his head. “Eres guapísimo—it’s a miracle their damn brains didn’t melt out their ears.”

“It’s not funny, Davey protests, but it’s a halfhearted effort at best. “The last guy I tried to hookup with came in his pants in the back of an Uber—we didn’t even make it four blocks! I wasn’t even touching him. Then he didn’t understand why I was absolutely uninterested in doing anything except going home, alone. And then,” Davey leans closer, starting to gesture with his hands as talks, “he tracked me down on venmo a few days later and tried to stick me with his dry cleaning bill!”

Jack can’t help it: he barks out a laugh. “He didn’t!”

“Yes, he fucking did!” Davey insists. “And, honestly, I’m not sure if that even cracks the top ten of ‘David Jacobs’ Tragic Attempts at Romance’—“

“There’s worse?” Jack asks. “Christ, sweetheart, I’m startin’ ta feel like I should be properly wining and dining ya, help make up for some of the assholes.”

“You won’t be making up for anything if you don’t stop laughing at me,” Davey grumbles, but he’s not truly annoyed—there’s a playful spark behind his eyes, anticipation written into every line of his body. “Besides, who’s to say you won’t be more of the same?”

“Ain’t gonna happen,” Jack says, confident.

“Sounds like someone’s sure of themselves,” Davey muses, arching a brow.

“Sounds ta me like the bar ain’t that high,” Jack counters with a cheeky grin. “Don’t be an inconsiderate dickhead and don’t tap out pathetically early—shouldn’t be too difficult.”

“And you think you can handle it?”

“If there’s one thing a werewolf’s got in spades,” Jack purrs. “It’s stamina.”

Davey’s eyes go deliciously dark.

“You’re not cute,” he informs Jack pertly, and the challenge in his voice probably isn’t meant to be as enticing as it is. Probably.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Jack says, and he lets his fangs drop as he leans forward, running his tongue over the razor sharp canines that peek out from underneath his smirk. “I’m fucking adorable.”

He doesn’t miss the way Davey’s eyes drop to his mouth, the way his throat bobs around a swallow. Jack just barely resists the urge to preen under his attention.

Without lifting his gaze, Davey says, in a voice that’s gone whiskey-smooth, “Shall we head out then?”

“Don’t’cha wanna finish your drink first?” Jack teases. “An’ I still got half a beer left.”

In answer, Davey tips his head back and downs the rest of his drink in one go, then he reaches over and plucks Jack’s beer out of his now slack grip and tosses that back too.

The empty glass lands against the bar top with a solid thunk but it’s barely a blip on Jack’s radar. Because Davey cups a hand around Jack’s jaw and draws him into a long, searing kiss. He tastes of hops and wolfsbane, cranberry and vodka, and something that must be uniquely Davey—warm and smokey and with a hint of bite.

Davey pulls away just enough for Jack to see the deep blue of his eyes, the thick canopy of his lashes. “And now?”

It takes Jack a second to find his voice, the keys in the ignition but the engine refusing to turn over. He rasps, “After you.”

….

“Wait, wait,” Davey pants against his mouth. He twists out of Jack’s arms, then darts around the corner into the kitchen. Befuddled and horny, Jack lumbers after him.

He finds him rummaging around in his fridge.

“Do you have a preference for Gatorade?” Davey asks. “I’ve got red and purple.”

“What?” Jack says, stupidly. “Uh, red, I guess.”

Davey hums in response. Under his breath he mutters to himself, “I’ll grab two, just to be safe.”

He nudges the refrigerator door closed with his hip, then turns and opens a cabinet. He pulls out a box of granola bars and grabs a handful.

“Dave, what are you doing?” Jack finally asks.

“Getting supplies,” Davey says, as though this should be obvious. “Can’t have you passing out on me.”

“I think I’ll be okay,” Jack says, bemused, stepping closer. “‘M made of pretty stern stuff.”

“Oh, so lycanthropy protects you from low blood sugar, now, does it?” Davey asks, pinning him with a spectacularly bitchy look. God, Jack’s already so fucking stupid for this man, it’s embarrassing. “Keeps your electrolytes properly balanced? Wow, that must be one hell of a party trick—“

“Alright, alright, point taken,” Jack says, curling himself around Davey’s back, letting his hands settle low over his hips. “You’re the expert, I’ll let you handle it.”

“Did you already have dinner?” Davey wonders. “I should’ve asked earlier, while we were still at the bar… Do you want something to eat? I can get you something—“

“What I really want is to get back’ta kissing you,” Jack murmurs, pressing his lips to the hollow behind Davey’s ear; Davey goes gratifyingly still in his arms, his pulse fluttering delicately beneath his skin. “So, if I promise to let you know the moment I get thirsty and have a big breakfast in the mornin’, can we please move you and your Gatorade somewhere more comfortable?”

“…and the granola bars,” Davey bargains.

“And the granola bars,” Jack easily concedes. “I’ll even eat one right now if it’ll make you feel better.”

Davey chews at his lip, hesitating. “Would you?” he implores softly.

Jack’s never choked down a granola bar so fast in his life.

…..

“Jesus, sweetheart,” Jack murmurs, watching Davey’s wide-eyed expression as he bottoms out, a little overwhelmed at the absolute vision he makes splayed out against the sheets. “I didn’t realize how much ya needed it.”

Davey’s lips are red and kiss-swollen, his hands fisted into the bedding on either side of him, but he still manages to gasp out, his chest heaving, “You can still back out, if all this is too much for you.”

“‘S a little late for that, ain’t it?” Jack muses. He pulls out just a bit, then carefully thrusts back in, sinking even further into that exquisite heat. “I’m literally balls deep inside you.”

“Consent is a continuous contract,” Davey lectures, but his words are a breathless rasp, his voice threaded with aching, blatant desire. “It can be retracted or reassessed at any time—“

He breaks off with a gasp as Jack rolls his hips forward, nice and slow, then does it again, starting up a steady rhythm.

“Quierdo, unless you say otherwise, they’d have to drag me off of you by my hair,” Jack vows, not entirely sure if he’s exaggerating or not. There’s just something about Davey—the snark and sweetness and sin of him—that draws him in, beckons him closer, makes something deep inside of him pant and tremble and howl. “Is this good for you? Less or more or…?”

“More,” is Davey’s immediate response. “More, oh god, please more—“

Jack leans in and kisses him then, unable to resist, and Davey arches into him like he’s starving for it—Christ, he probably is.
