Dapper dabbler by Todd Wynia Via Flickr: This handsome duck is an American Wigeon. I thought his tones matched nicely with that of the reflections on the water. I'm fond of that green swoosh on the males' heads. Wigeons are dabbling ducks feeding mostly on plant matter. Though I've never seen it, apparently sometimes a Eurasian Wigeon or two will show up here in North American and mix with their American cousins. And visa versa - American Wigeons sometimes show up in Europe.

Hey Caribou! Here's a prompt!
Mirage: [doing something NOT normal] Is that normal?
Boomerang: [stares at him silently] ...no... it's not.
P.S. you don't have to do it.👌💛🧡❤️
Oh my goodness! Boomerang may be the funny one with his humor and pranks, but Mirage is definitely the weird one! And he has an impressionable little brother too, so it’s double the weirdness!
————
To say Boomerang was use to Mirage was an understatement.
He could tell when Mirage entered a room by the smell of his hair gel and the sound of his footsteps. He could guess where the ARC was at any given moment and rarely be wrong. He could practically read Mirage’s mind with one look of the fancy haired trooper’s face.
Still, there were some things his brother did that stumped even Boomerang. Some little quirks that left the medic scratching his head over how he missed this odd trait.
“Does…” Squirrel paused, “does Mirage always sniff his food before he puts it in his mouth?”
Boomerang paused chewing, looking to his brother happily eating with his head in the clouds.
Every time the the fork went up, he took a quick sniff, then put it in his mouth satisfied.
Boomerang stared, watching him like an animal in a zoo.
“You never noticed?” Cosmos asked, “he’s done it for as long as I’ve known him.”
Now all the pilots were watching, looking perplexed and maybe regretting letting the Boomerang, Mirage, and Shadow join the pilots’ table for dinner that night.
Mirage paused chewing, noticing his audience. He quickly swallowed, looking nervous and even a little bit embarrassed by all their eyes on him.
“What?” He asked.
“You sniff your food.” Radar stated.
“Correction,” Baby interjected, “you sniff every bite before it goes into your mouth.”
“Yeah?” Mirage turned to Boomerang, “is that normal?”
Boomerang shook his head, “no… it’s not.”
“But…” Mirage looked at them all, “poison?”
“It’s our mess hall grub,” Baby stated, “it’s the same as always.”
Mirage shrugged, “guess I’ll let you know if it’s expired or smells off.”
“Weirdo,” Baby grunted, and they resumed eating and chatting.
Tracks nudged Boomerang, lifting a finger up from his glass to point to the end of the table.
Dabbler—as usual—was doodling in a sketchbook, while chatting Shadow’s ear off about color theory. Shadow listened, bringing his fork up, taking a quick sniff, and then eating the bite.
Boomerang sighed, “that’s why he’s called his Shadow.”

It's the season of the witch and until the end of October I'm offering Brainscan issues 33 & 34 by Alex Wrekk at a price where it will be about $10 including postage anywhere in the US! In these two zines Alex explores over a decade of building a secular witchcraft practice.
Brainscan #33 - DIY Witchery invites you into a deeply personal journey through the world of witchcraft. Over the course of a decade, the author has explored and practiced witchcraft, and this zine shares their unique experiences. It's not a how-to guide, but rather an insightful personal narrative. The author delves into their journey into witchcraft, the development of their secular and non-pagan practice, and the distinctions between their approach and contemporary witchcraft. They also tackle critical issues within the modern pagan and witchcraft communities, including discussions on racism, cultural appropriation, colonialism, and capitalism, reflecting their intersectional politics. For those interested in venturing on their own path, the zine offers tips and resources.
"Brainscan #34 - A Dabbler's Week of DIY Witchery is a zine born out of a challenge sparked by a cntroversial witchcraft book review in January 2020. The review suggested that modern witches were anti-vaccine and climate change deniers, leading a witch to question what it really takes to explore witchcraft for a week. The author, an experienced witch, takes up the challenge and presents their response in this zine.
Within these pages, daily activities are proposed, designed to shift your perspective and introduce you to their personal world of witchcraft. Activities include space cleansing, simple energy exercises, correspondences, animism, and basic spells. All of this is presented in a friendly, non-authoritative tone, making it perfect for those curious about witchcraft.

Dabbler's Week 1: @asksecularwitch
From her post here
Day 1: Pendulum Divination
Can I just say- holy shit?
Pendulum divination is something that I've been avoiding for YEARS under the assumption that my hands were not steady enough to really make it work. I bought a crystal pendulum with the intent of trying it out years ago, but ended up never actually doing anything with it.
I wish I had tried this sooner. My mind is fucking blown. Yes, No, Cannot Answer, and Refused Answer do all make specific patterns and my pendulum swaps between them on command. More than that, I asked if the pendulum wanted to be used.
Yes.
Was the pendulum upset with me for not using it sooner?
No.
Maybe just a little upset?
Refused to answer.
I'm so blown away. Legitimately, I asked if the pendulum could be used to speak to spirits, and got a yes. I'm using it to speak to a local nature spirit, and I asked it to stop the pendulum's motion and it did. This is fantastic. Thank you Sec so much for giving me a reason to try something new. I could cry over how happy I am from this one experiment. I really hadn't expected this to go so well.

Happy little trees
aka the only way i know how to draw trees, and even that is thanks to Bob Ross
Tumblr media
@alexghost07 I hope this helps! ♥
Always click for better quality, tumblr is not friendly to most image ratios !
Most people (including myself originally) are simply overthinking it. Especially if you are working with a medium that has one colour on a spectrum. For example a graphite pencil. Like i do.
These are so simple that it just.. for me it always felt like cheating almost. It cannot be this easy can it? Well, it is.
For me what helped is that now i never draw them with anything harden than a 2B pencil and very rarely softer than a 4B but there is no rules for these things. Do what feels right and comfortable for you and your desired end result.
And it's not that it would not be doable with a B or HB or even an H pencil, i just prefer the softer side. Easier to control and has an inherent softness that lends itself great to foliage if you are not aiming for high detail. At least for me.
But even between 2B and 2B are differences depending on the quality of the graphite. And a 4B for comparison.
Tumblr media
And the scanned version to actually see the differences:
Tumblr media
Not a huge difference but everyone has preferences or ideas what goes better with the given drawing or look they try to achieve.
You can also play with the darkness, naturally, to make it even more silhouette than tree:
Tumblr media
But maybe the biggest help for me was to switch pencil hold for this. Usually i hold my pencils and pens either like this, this or this:
Tumblr media
It is dependent if my hand is hurting/cramping or the area i'm drawing or how i want my lines to fall, how defined or blended shading i want, or to avoid smudgeing if i'm too lazy to get something to put under my hand etc.
But for the trees i am holding it like so:
Tumblr media
I do this for these trees or foliage of similar kinds. For bushes and other kinds of trees i just make the trunks a bit more gnarly and the crowns more fluffy in a cloud esque way, and let everything blend together. The viewer's brain fills out most of it anyway.
The goal is for me to evoke foliage just enough to be translated and recognized as for examople: a road between bushes and trees. (instead of beeing just random scribbles on paper)
Tumblr media
(I also made the farther ones lighter because as you look towards the horizon in larger expanses, the further away things are, the lighter and less defined they seem.)
And the obligatory video, just so you can actually see what i'm talking about here. Until 2:40 it is real time, so you can see at the actual speed how i am doing these. The rest of the video is about x5.2 speed.
Originally it was almost 8 minute so let's say this little scene took about 10 minutes altogether. It definitely looks like a 10 minute sketch but i love this type of stuff. It's low effort and still looks good.
This is with a single 4B pencil and a white pencil thingie i talked about before.
(No sounds on the video besides the pencil on the paper. Also shout out to my goblet, replacing the RedBull can from last time. ✌🏻)
The main thing is that i try to avoid it to be too symmetrical but still keeping a level of semi-symmetry because pine trees do have a natural symmetry.
And the propeerly scanned end results:
Tumblr media
I really hope it helps, because these are very fun to draw and far more easier than people might originally think.
Thank you again if you read this far, happy creating! I hope your day is kind to you. ♥

The last time I did any magic/witchy anything, at least according to this blog, was November 2019. Reblogged some stuff since then, poked at a tarot deck, but nothing really.
Never unfollowed witchblr though, and my dashboard showed me @asksecularwitch 's Dabblers' Week. And yesterday I dug in my witchy box and found a this key for which I do not recall a purpose (all I can think is it was potentially related to Clow magic?), tied it to some yellow string, and tried Day One - Monday - Necklace Divination or Ring on a Thread Divination.
It didn't do big swings, but it did swing differently for each of the four questions. I asked it to show me the different answers, asked it questions I knew the answer to, and a couple I didn't, and it seemed to answer consistently and correctly. So, that's something!
I plan to do the week this week, although it is 9pm on Tuesday and I've yet to do knot magic.

Meeting the Parents (part one):
Part two Part three
Synopsis: part of my high school AU for my Star Wars OCs, where everyone is still alive and no one dies. Juliette’s parents learn their teenage daughter is hanging out some new friends versus the old ones they met/remember from elementary and middle school. With both parents going away for a business trip during a very important weekend, it’s time they meet Juliette’s new friend group… of 20+ teenage boys.
————
“Bye, mom! Bye, buir!” Juliette called as she ran down the stairs, “I’m off to school!”
“Ad‘ika,” her father called from the kitchen, “I made you breakfast! I’ll drive you to school!”
Her mother snickered over her tea, “my dear, calm down. Our little girl is growing up.”
Juliette followed her nose to the kitchen, “I smell chocolate.”
“Chocolate chip pancakes,” he pointed his spatula to the mountain of them. “They’re still your favorite, aren’t they?”
Juliette dropped her book bag and sat down, “I guess I could eat one.”
Her smiled, doing a little happy dance of victory as he flipped the next batch.
“So, my dear daughter,” her mother set down her tea cup, “how come we haven’t seen any of your friends around lately?”
Juliette put two pancakes on her plate, “well, things are complicated. Micara, Faye, and Nala have cheerleading all the time, Anneliese does tutoring after school, Rani has all these clubs…”
She left out the part where she saw all their Snapchat and Instagram stories showing them all at the mall, movies, bowling, and everywhere else. They cut her from the group, more specifically Micara cut her out.
Her father frowned, “do you think they’ll be busy this weekend?”
Juliette sat down with her plate, “no offense, I don’t really feel like celebrating with them. I’d rather just do something with you guys!”
They were quiet, and looked worriedly to each other.
She knew that look, and it made her heart sink.
“You two have a business trip,” Juliette put down her fork. “I’ll be alone for my sixteenth birthday…”
“We can cancel!” Her father picked up his cell, “push the trip back, perhaps?”
“We can’t.” Her mother said lowly, “this opportunity is too important.”
“So is our daughter,” her father said quietly.
“Jaller, we both have to be there,” her mother said, “maybe, we bring her?”
“She’ll be stuck in a stuffy hotel,” her father shook his head, “that’s not a happy birthday.”
Juliette sighed, as her phone began dinging.
Her parents continued their back and forth as she picked up her phone, finding the group chat exploding.
Cosmos: Starlight! Where are you?!!
Boomerang: are you sick? what are you symptoms?
Mirage: sun poisoning?
Keks: what the heck is sun poisoning?
Cooper: Means she got too much sun.
Keks: is that really a thing?
Shadow: *added a link*
Shadow: just googled it for you! it’s a thing!
Mirage: SHADOW!!!!
Boomerang: SUP SHADOW!!!!
Cooper: who added Shadow?
Hardwire: I did :)
Coyote: cool!
Dabbler: isnt fury and tracks in this too?
Track: ;p
Fury: Juliette still hasn’t answered the question…
Cosmos: EVERYONE SHUT UP!
Cosmos: STARLIGHT??!!? WHER RU?!?!!
Juliette giggled reading over their texts, especially since her other two main group chats were beginning to chat too.
“Something funny, ad’ika?” Her father asked.
Juliette grinned, “just some friends…”
Her mother narrowed her eyes, “what kind of friends?”
Juliette lifted her gaze, feeling a blush warm her face, “they’re just friends.”
“Are they boys?” Her mother pressed.
“Maybe,” she texted the chat.
“You’re too young to be dating!” Her father held his chest, “you’re still my little girl!”
“Jaller,” her mother sighed, “remember last year?”
“Oh yeah,” her father muttered, “Fang who went to private school. Well, no more boyfriends till your thirty.”
Juliette chewed on her cheek, “um… how do I tell you this? Uh… I have a boyfriend?”
Her father dropped the spatula, “Almyra, cancel the trip.”
“Jaller, my love, calm down,” her mother turned her attention to Juliette, “we need to meet him. Along with this other male friends of yours.”
Juliette groaned, then typed in the chat, “wait. All of them? Or just the ones in this chat?”
“All of them.” Almyra stated.
“How many are there?” Jaller nervously asked.
Juliette sucked in her teeth, “you might need to order ten or fifteen pizzas.”
Juliette: Calm yourselves, gentlemen
Juliette: I am safe at home eating pancakes
Keks: what kind? xD
Cooper: is food the only thing on your mind?
Keks: it’s a very important question!
Cosmos: Thank the stars! You’re okay!
Coyote: unrelated, what did you guys get for question 37 in the math homework?
Mirage: oh osik! we had homework?
Cooper: DUH!
Hardwire: when do we not?

Neither of us are huge video game people but Scribe and I bought and started playing Pentiment today and OUGH..... I can already tell this game is going to nestle in my brain. It's especially neat with Scribe offering running commentary on all the little well-researched Early Modern and calligraphic details.
Also obsessed with the fact that there's an option to have the game text include long s. This game was made by nerds, for nerds, and as someone who's been going overboard with research for a project of my own it's so fun to see a game that gets history very right, with the aesthetics to match.

Sure, what's your favourite fighting game?
hmm, not an easy question actually
i have by far the most hours logged in tekken tag tournament 2 and i have a real soft spot for it, but i dunno, i know it's a boring answer and it might just be recency bias but i think i have to say street fighter 6, it's just the perfect blend of being really accessible but also extremely fun and satisfying and it feels like i have plenty of room to grow as a player
aesthetically though, guilty gear strive wins by a country mile, what a gorgeous game
