My Bets for Rebecca’s Final Dates
Next week, our girl Rebecca will be treated to dates with Greg, Josh, and Nathaniel. What will those dates be like?
Here’s my guesses:
Nathaniel - I think he’s going to go for something Harry Potter themed. Maybe he’ll take her to a Harry Potter show or make his apartment look like Hogwarts for a night of potions making. I think this makes sense as their first happy memory together and also because it’s a sign of Nathaniel’s growth -- something that he was once ashamed of admitting is now something he openly geeks out about. Additionally, I think the rest of Mountaintop (Ex. Maya, Daryll, Tim, Jim, George) will help out, showing how much nicer Nathaniel has become as well as how open he is to everyone about his interests. Also, maybe Jim will hit on Rebecca as a side joke, but it won’t be taken too seriously.
Greg - Greg and Rebecca bond over their chemistry as well as their similar approaches to making fun of things. For that reason, I think Greg will organize a West Covina Dog Show. It’s a fun callback to their post-Thanksgiving hangout session and can also show Greg’s growing appreciation for West Covina as a whole. Plus, playing with puppies is just cute as fuck and they’re probably stimulate some form of aphrodisiac.
Josh - I think Josh’s date will reflect the love of the inner child that Rebecca pointed out on Friday, and because of that, I believe Josh will take Rebecca to Raging Waters. He knows Rebeca’s wanted to go there forever, he knows she had a bad time when she went with Greg, and he has a similar love for it that Rebecca has so this time, it will be fun. He acknowledges that it’s a risk, but he wants to overwrite a bad memory with a good one. Additionally, it shows how he’s developed into someone more emotionally aware of the needs of others.
Bonus Prediction: I think Trent will show up before the finale. I don’t know how nor when nor why, but he’s appeared in every season and I just can’t see last season’s events being his last appearance on the show. I like this because Rebecca’s character arc will have fully completed and so she won’t let Trent ruin that. It’ll show a great contrast to the person Rebecca is now and the person who she could’ve been without the strength she had to seek help or her support system. Actually, as I was writing this, I now have a theory as to how this can happen. One of the ex-prisoners who Rebecca helped has a boyfriend in the men’s prison, the same men’s prison that hosts Trent, and maybe they’re even cellmates or friends. Anyway, our ex-prisoner tells her boyfriend about how this team of lawyers sprung her from jail and after Trent learns about this, he puts two and two together and figures out that it’s Rebecca. Suddenly, the team gets a request from the men’s prison for legal help and when they show up (Rebecca and Paula and maybe Nathaniel), they see Trent. Paula wants them to leave immediately and Rebecca wants the same, but Trent says something that keeps Rebecca around to talk to him and from there, the rest follows.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season 3 Finale
In a show that so bravely and honestly discusses the struggles of mental illness, it’s easy to fall into the trap of framing the character as the victim. However, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend doesn’t shy away from acknowledging that mental illness is not an excuse to evade responsibility, nor is it a valid justification for emotional abuse. This season ends with Rebecca’s refusal of Nathaniel’s suggestion to plead guilty by reason of insanity, which once again subverts the stereotype that is explored in the title of the show. Rebecca may be mentally ill, but she isn’t crazy, and she understands that accountability can actually be a healthy step towards her recovery. Rebecca’s decision to take responsibility for her actions forms a wonderful juxtaposition to “Nothing is Ever Anyone’s Fault”, the romantically beautiful yet logically nonsensical duet between Nathaniel and Rebecca, and ends the season on a relatively positive note of self awareness and realisation. Leave it to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to frame a sentence for attempted second degree murder as a beautiful scene of emotional enlightenment. After the episode ends, the credits roll out to the instrumental track of the season one song “I’m a Good Person”, which cleverly reinforces Rebecca’s growth from stubborn self denial to honest confession.
On the note of using music to characterise scenes of thematic relevance, the episode also features a subtle instrumental reprise of “Settle for Me” as Nathaniel looks at Mona from a distance. Both viewers and Nathaniel are able to see that Mona is an amazing person, one so forgiving that would overlook the fact that Nathaniel cheated on her for eight months. Nonetheless despite how perfect Mona seems on paper, Nathaniel can’t deny his love for Rebecca, and in that moment he is able to realise that he shouldn’t settle for someone that he simply does not love. That being said, the love that Nathaniel and Rebecca have for each other is not the magical solution to all their problems, which is something that Nathaniel needs to recognise. It’s a perfect rom com moment when Nathaniel sings “we can't control the things we do, just like I can't control that I'm in love with you”, but it is grimly shadowed with the realisation that this unrealistic glorification of love is by no means healthy or beneficial.
Take, for example, Trent’s obsessive love for Rebecca. Trent sees a relationship with Rebecca as the ultimate destination of lifelong happiness. Trent’s storyline may be ludicrously absurd, but it does function as a significant parallel to Rebecca’s own tendencies. Rebecca is the main character of the show, and the story is told from her perspective, which allows viewers to empathise with and relate to her. Trent, however, does not receive the same amount of character development as Rebecca, and is framed as a crazy, relentless stalker. In all objectivity, the two actually have a lot in common. Throughout the show, there have been many musical parallels between Trent and Rebecca, including “The Trent is Getting Ready Song”, “Dear Rebecca Nora Bunch”, and “I’m Just a Boy In Love”. As viewers, we never hesitate to blame Trent for the blackmailing and the manipulation, yet we choose to disregard Rebecca’s abusive behaviours because we know her backstory. With the gradual buildup of the parallels between Trent and Rebecca, the season finale scene of Rebecca’s acceptance of responsibility artfully takes love off its pedestal, and focuses instead on the importance of personal growth and emotional independence.
In the lighter segments of the episode, Heather gives birth to Daryl’s baby. In terms of constructing a well rounded finale episode, this joyful scene provides a necessary balance to the relatively heavier confrontations between the other characters. More importantly, however, the birth of the baby acts as a symbolic representation of the birth of a new Rebecca. After acting as the victim for three whole seasons, Rebecca is finally coming to terms with her mistakes, and is ready to change for the better. Rebecca’s acceptance of responsibility and attempts to make amends with the people she has hurt in the past are already signs of positive self growth. Here’s to hoping that the show will be renewed for season four, so that we can continue to see Rebecca grow and change into the better version of herself.
