Crazy ex girlfriend really put themselves out there with having a female protagonist. A female protagonist that dosent have the body of a supermodel. A mentally ill female protagonist. A female protagonist that is explicitly a bad person yet is treated with sympathy AND held responsible for her actions at the same time. A female protagonist that is a more fair and accurate portrayal of mental illness then most men with mental illness in media are. A female protagonist that is allowed to exist as a complicated person and not woman™. A female protagonist that is a parody and a empathetic exploration of a sexist stereotype. they did all of that while also having a mainly POC cast with diverse body types and sexualities that are all treated as actual people and not monoliths of the minority they are representing. And they balanced all that with being consistently funny, entertaining, touching, heartwarming and having really really good music for 4 seasons. WE SHOULD TALK ABOUT THIS SHOW MORE

I mean Crazy Ex Girlfriend literally went here's a character who is absolutely not going to be palatable to anyone, you know her or at least the popular image of her, you've been trained by culture and media to hate her and the parts of you that are like her, and like, you don't have to like her, hell at times you will probably hate her with good reason, but you are going to understand why she does the things she does and you're going to care deeply about what happens to her even as you're exasperated and yelling at the screen and maybe this will trick you into understanding and caring about those similar parts of yourself more

I'm waiting for the day Crazy ex Girlfriend has a Renaissance on like some older shows get and everyone starts talking about it as an underrated gem bc I will be so ready for that day. I've never had a more 'they're so me' character than Rebecca Bunch.

So you're telling me they had a whole "No one else is singing my song" moment as a metaphore for "no one else understands my mental state and troubles" and then Nathaniel literally sings Rebecca's song and she literally says "Someone else is singing my song" while looking at him with stars in her eyes because they want me to go feral, right? That's what they want me to do?
