Imogen stirs with a chill in the middle of the night. The window was left wide open when they went to bed and now a stiff breeze is blowing in. Laudna, meanwhile, has been bundled up in the blankets this whole time nice and warm, seemingly having stolen them off Imogen during the night.

Imogen sneaks out of bed and closes the window most of the way, leaving a small crack just to keep it cool inside. As she crawls back into bed, she reaches over to Laudna’s side and starts to peel away some of the blankets.

However, this causes Laudna to stir, as she reaches up and grabs Imogen’s hand, thinking she’s intending on cuddling.

“No, give me some blanket,” Imogen says as she pulls her hand away from Laudna’s and quickly moves to the top of the blanket. Immediately, Laudna moves onto the defensive in her half-wakened state, and playfully responds with a mumbled “no, mine.”

Imogen tugs at the blankets - gently, playfully - as she tries to get her girlfriend to let her underneath. “But it’s coooooold,” Imogen whines.

“I know and you’ll let all the warm out!” Laudna pulls her head under the blankets like a turtle, as Imogen puts up more of an effort.

“What warm, you’re all bone, babe!” Imogen’s now tugging as the back of Laudna where the blanket had been tucked underneath her. She pulls a corner free and starts to work it out from under her wiry frame with very little struggle, though Laudna continues to resist as best she can.

Finally, after a moment of play fighting, Imogen has pulled the cover over both Laudna and herself, both huddled underneath from head to toe like children hiding in a tent, giggling as Imogen continued her playful assault on Laudna. She now tickled and teased her beloved, as Laudna curled up in defense before ultimately trying to reach for and grab Imogen’s wrists. Managing to do exactly that, Laudna with all of her bone strength manages to get Imogen off guard and rolls her over, pinning Imogen down, and gives her a kiss. Laudna has successfully quelled the “attack.” For now.

Imogen returns the kiss and relaxes, allowing Laudna to remain on top of her, both of them still under the blankets somewhat comfortably.

Laudna buries her head into the crook of Imogen’s neck as she wraps her arms around her, holding Laudna’s bone-thin frame tight.

After a moment, Laudna slinks off to her side of the bed once more and redistributes the blankets evenly back amongst the two of them. As the two of them settle back into a comfortable position, now holding one another’s hand between their resting bodies, Imogen gives Laudna one last playful nudge with her foot under the blankets.

“If you need more, you know you can always take it,” she teased Laudna.

Laudna snuggles closer to Imogen, practically clinging to her now. “Darling, you’re all the warmth I need.”

Imogen kisses Laudna’s forehead and says “good night.” They both close their eyes and drift back to sleep.

Shadowgast Bakery/Coffee/Tea Shop Au's I Love

Okay I promised this after the Shadowgast Fics that made me Ugly Cry list, but instead I ended up doing a Space Opera-AU list. OOPS.

That's fine - it gave me some extra time to read again for this list!

So here it is, in all it's fluff and glory - some of the Bakery/Coffee Shop Shadowgast AU's that I love.

1 Labor of Love

Chapters: 6/6 Rating: Mature Summary: "He still looked devastatingly attractive in every possible way and it wasn’t fair because he looked like he had just rolled out of the bed. Essek needed at least an hour in the morning to talk himself into being even vaguely pleasant. “Oh! Guten Morgen, and welcome back to the Xhorhaus Bakery,” Caleb said, a certain pleasant crinkle to his expression. He was smiling a soft, gentle smile that caught Essek off guard. “What can I get you this morning?” At Xhorhaus Bakery, where the Mighty Nein bake up Rosohna's most delectable treats, magic is something that is in the air. For Essek Theylss, there might just be love there too. COMPLETED

Why I loved it: This is one of my favourite fluffy fics. It's the passion for magic, the softness in the baking, and the transformation of lonely-to-in-love Essek that has my heart. This is truly a comfort fic for me, it's just so unbelievably sweet.

2 always the lonely ones know

always the lonely ones know (19348 words) by jolychetta/@hearthianhatchling Chapters: 6/6 Rating: General Audiences Summary: Essek Thelyss doesn't like unexpected changes, but when his usual coffee shop is replaced by a new one, he has no idea how much his life is about to be shaken up. He should hate the Chaos Crew Café and its people, but he keeps returning every day. It definitely has nothing to do with the handsome barista who served him the first day. In the following weeks, everything unravels - Essek's life, his feelings, and the friends he suddenly finds himself having. Learning to become your better self is hard work, it turns out.

What I loved about it: This fic gave me that perfect taste of the "I don't care about the results of my actions but oh no, I have friends and I think I developed a conscious" but also "this iced mocha is life changing". I loved the entirety of this fic, it was as much a fluffy coffee shop au as it was a story of unlearning and coming to terms with your actions. I almost wish it was a longer slow burn!

If this was all a hazing prank-- “You are Jester’s… acquaintance?” Lovely. Even better. His reputation precedes him. - AKA a fateful encounter is had on one sunny day in Nicodranas

What I love about this: This is part one in a hefty cat café universe (I know it says one chapter but I think there are at least like 14 parts??)- and all of it is absolutely adorable. Caleb owning a magical cat café is honestly the most wholesome and expected thing. You've got the high strung disaster hot boy, you've got the mostly confident ginger magic man just interacting so awkwardly. If you like disaster first encounters that evolve into the cutest of relationships- this entire universe is for you. Oh and also, in later parts, Frumpkin is in charge of the cats and his thoughts are a jellicle dream.

Chapters: 1/1 Rating: General Audiences Summary: Essek didn't want to be here, but he didn't have a choice in the matter. after weeks of keeping himself cooped up in his own home he decides to finally go out and see what all the fuss about this city is. He found a bit more than he thought he would.

What I loved about it: This fic was an absolute whirlwind. Essek leaves the house one time and stumbles upon a ginger wizard barista who has him completely rattled. Very short, very sweet, and Essek Thelyss will be back.

Serve with lemon and honey ((1032 words) by quothhh (if you know them here let me know so I can tag!). Chapters: 1/1 Rating: Teen and up Audiences Summary: "I don't suppose you can brew me anything stronger than chai today?" Essek asks as he sits at his regular seat along the bar, fingers rubbing at the Ludinus-shaped migraine already pulsing between his temples.

Caleb laughs and tucks his book under the counter. "Ja, actually, I think I can.”

In which Caleb Widogast is definitely just a barista and Essek Thelyss definitely isn't a Dynasty spy.

What I love about this: The absolute wizard flirting is so lovely in this fic. It is in two parts! I do wish this world was explored more, it would have made a lovely longform. But as it is, it is wonderful. Just two- normal- absolutely not magical, absolutely not a spy, guys, just at a teashop/art gallery/bookstore/apothecary. Oh and there's a recipe in the notes of the first part *chefs kiss*.

Perhaps it was because Duani knew Deirta had thousands of years of life experience, compared to her meager three hundred; maybe it was because she had the power to ruin Duani’s life with the flick of her delicate wrist.

Either way, she was terrified, though she did everything she could to hide it, keeping her hands clasped behind her back to hide sweaty palms. Duani had been recommended to the Umavi personally, which was the only reason she was here. If her previous clients had such faith in her, then surely she should have the same confidence in herself. Right?

“Everything seems to be in order,” the Umavi said then, not even looking at Duani as she sorted through the paperwork in front of her. “When are you available to move in?”

Duani blinked in surprise. Was that it? Did that mean…? “I am available as soon as you wish,” she answered, voice breathless despite her best attempts.

“Excellent,” the Umavi continued as she signed the contract with an elegant quill. “Your room will be set up today then. The cleric believes I still have a few weeks before the child is due, but such predictions are unreliable and I do not like surprises, so you will move in immediately.”

“Oh… okay,” Duani replied with a shaky nod. This was all happening very fast. She hesitated, unsure if she was supposed to say or do anything else. After a moment, the Umavi looked up to her.

“Surik will show you to your rooms once they are prepared tomorrow,” she explained distantly. “You are free to acquaint yourself with the grounds and the Den until the child is born. That is all for today.”

“Thank you, Umavi,” Duani said with a bow. She left the room quickly after that. Read more on AO3

It was cold in Whitestone, the air was crisp and snow blanketed the roofs on each house. Imogen hadn’t realized that the nipping air had turned her nose red until Ashton’s had draped a coat over her shoulders. Her eyes fixed on the tree that they had just travelled through.

“Your going to fucking freeze, come on Letters said they needed you for something.”

She nodded in acknowledgement but didn’t move from her place. She just stared at the branches, new growth and healed bark shined like a symbol of the city’s healing throughout the years. She was haunted by a phantom. Laudna’s body hanging, dangling from a fraying rope.

She pictured what Delilah was doing with Laudna at that moment.

“I’ll take her with me,” she threatened, the voice of Delilah Briarwood was steeped with venom and malice. Imogen could only picture Delilah with her hand around Laudna’s neck and shoulders whispering in her ear with a wicked grin.

Then,Imogen suddenly felt her feet lift from the ground. And when she returned her focus to the present moment she was hoisted over Ashton’s shoulder.

“Hey! Hey! Ashton what the hell are you doing! Put me down,” she yelled.

Ashton simply yawned and kept walking towards the castle getting sizable punches to the back along the way. As they approached Fearne and Fcg were chatting with a guard at the front of the castle.

It was hard to make out the words but Imogen could faintly hear inquiries as to where her location was. She tried to listen closer to the conversation as they approached but before she could hear anymore Ashton shouted.

“Found ‘er!”

Fcg and Fearne perked up and looked in their direction. Fearne immediately bolted towards them whilst Fcg said a quick farewell to the guard. Ashton had now transferred her into more of a princess carry situation as if they were presenting her to the group like a blanket or tapestry.

“Imogen,” Fearne exclaimed, she ran up to her.

Fearne immediately grabbed her hands feeling for the cold and seeing the red fingertips. Her face twisted with worry as Fcg rolled beside.

“You're freezing,” Fearne said, her hand gripping tightly around Imogen’s, “Ashton you should take her inside.”

Ashton went to salute but realized that he was still holding Imogen and stopped. They nodded and started marching into the castle. As he left he shouted for Fcg to let Orym know that they needed a quiet place to warm up.

Imogen hadn’t really gotten to explore the castle very much. Since they had arrived, Orym and Laudna’s body had been whisked away by a man with powder white hair and golden framed glasses and a woman with greyed dark brown hair, along with the Tempest and Chetney had gone with Orym just in case. Imogen hadn’t stayed in the castle for long, the tall chambers and bustling staff was just a bit too much for her to handle at that moment. As she took in all the high ceilings and paintings of children and family hung from the walls Ashton received a message from who Imogen could only guess was Fcg. Ashton marched her into a cozy living room with a roaring fire and sat her down on a plush sofa and slung a blanket onto her lap.

“Exandria to Imogen. Hey are you good,” Ashton inquired, their face cut with an underlying concern.

“Yeah, just kinda lost, I mean we’re back in Laudna’s hometown where you know she was- well- killed by that bitch. And we don’t even know if these people can save her and everyone in this fucking castle is just too much right now. I can hear it all Ashton, and I can’t turn it off,” Imogen sputtered, her breath increased into more gasping than breathing and tears started to pool in the corner of her eyes as she continued, “and it’s all my fault that Otohan came after us, and I know Fearne and Letters couldn’t do anything about it but why her. And that fucking bitch Delilah can’t do anything so what’s her use to us. And with us bringing Otohan to Estheross and Orym’s husband and his home. And Fearne’s parents and Fcg’s history and whatever the hell Chetney had going on and you and your memories. And why’d it have to be her? Why couldn’t it have been me, I dragged y’all into this and it’s my past and that fucking moon that are haunting me and-”

“Breathe,” Ashton commanded, Imogen hadn’t even noticed that they stood in front of her gripping her shoulders.

“Imogen you gotta breathe. I know it’s a lot right now but we are getting Laudna back and we’re fucking dealing with this bullshit moon fuckery but not if you fucking die from hypothermia or some shit. You and Fcg helped me out with my weird head shit and we’re all going to help you and Laudna and Orym and Fearne and Chet and Letters and Estheross. But you have to chill the fuck out.”

Ashton stared deep into her eyes with an intense sense of calm. Ashton was solid and real and didn’t scream their hatred in their head for her to hear, even though Imogen knew that he had plenty to be angry at the world for. Ashton trusted her enough to let her into their head. Ashton had listened when she had screamed at him to carry Laudna. They had saved her life on multiple occasions. She trusted him with her life.

In that moment she just collapsed into Ashton for a comforting hug, the exhaustion of the whole Laudna-Otohan situation finally taking its physical toll. She had been afraid to sleep the last few nights, afraid that Ruidus and Otohan would haunt her dreams.

As she felt Ashton release her and set her head down on the cushion, “fuck I’m cold,” she shuttered.

“I’ll get us some food or something. Or maybe let Orym know so he can grab it. That one rich prick, Lord Percival de fuckface said we were free to help ourselves but I’ve been told I’m ‘abrasive’ and would ‘send a bad impression’. Like fuck Chetney your one to talk,” they said, a playful smile pushed through the tough stone exterior of Ashton.

“Thanks Ashton,” Imogen sighed, as she let herself melt into the heat of the room.

The television glowed with the flickering lights of Times Square, where officially Too Many people were gathered to ring in the new year.

Not Imogen and Laudna, though.

As midnight fast approached, just nearly a minute to go, the two happily-in-love women watched from afar in their cottage in the woods. A few candles lit the otherwise dark interior besides the view of the television, where the ball was in focus.

Imogen snuggled up next to Laudna on the couch, prompting Laudna to nuzzle Imogen’s neck gently before leaving a kiss in its wake.

Imogen shuddered with her touch, as the crowd in the tv began to count down from 30.

Laudna’s eyes looked up toward Imogen’s, the faint light of a candle flickering in the reflection that stared back at her. Laudna smiled as she reached up and cupped the side of Imogen’s face.

“I’m so glad we’re here instead,” she said.

Imogen grasped Laudna’s wrist gently, turning her head in the direction of her hand where she was gently turning it over. She placed a kiss on Laudna’s knuckle before saying, “I am glad to be anywhere you are, Laudna.”

Laudna blushed, as the countdown on the television struck 10 seconds.

Laudna sat up and turned toward Imogen more directly, and placed both hands on either cheek.

As the clock struck midnight, Laudna’s lips met Imogen’s. Their eyes both closed, they saw their own fireworks as they kissed; they didn’t need the show on the television.

In the corner, Pate gave out a delightful squeak as he ran on the wheel inside his cage. The women paid no mind to him as they remained lip-locked.

Imogen smiled as Laudna kissed her again, and again, and a fourth time now, before she began to giggle. “Happy New year to you too,” she said.

Laudna let out a guilty laugh as she said, “Happy New year Imogen,” as she reached over to the table for their champagne glasses. “Here’s to another beautiful year with you,” she said as she handed Imogen’s flute over.

Imogen took it in hand and gently clinked Laudna’s, now held aloft in front of her. “And to many more after,” she replied, before they both took a hearty swig of the entire glass. They each smiled at one another as they brought their emptied flutes down and onto the table in front of their shared couch.

Now it was Imogen who immediately buried herself into Laudna’s arms. Laudna accepted her immediately, and wrapped her up in her embrace.

After a couple of moments, she began to use her free leg to kick free a blanket that Imogen had been sitting in front of prior, and deftly brought it within reach of her hand. With Imogen’s help, they unfurled the blanket and covered themselves with it as they lay on the couch for the next little while, before drifting off to sleep.

Shadowgast Corporate/Office-Au Rec List!

Hello I'm back again with more disaster wizard (well and in this case working professional but more office-like setting) recommendations!

This list is a little bit more bawdy than normal (I love a good smut fic, but I also try to vary the ratings on these lists for those who may not share my enthusiasm).

As per my last email (11651 words) by LivThael (I don't think they are on Tumblr- if they do please comment so I can tag- but they have a twitter listed in the notes of the fic) Chapters: 11/11 Rating: Explicit Summary: Essek Thelyss is an asshole with a questionable taste in spreadsheets. Caleb Widogast has more important and certainly more interesting things to do than filing travel expense claims. A series of mails turns into a escalating meeting. Or: Please stop writing me emails, I genuinely hate you. - Explicit content only in chapter 10.

What I loved: Anyone who has worked in an office knows a passive aggressive email when they get one. Plus we have the added bonus of having to deal with accounting to get expenses covered- ugh, so good. The energy of these passive aggressive- yet flirty workplace emails between new hire Caleb and kind-of-an-asshole Essek in accounting is *chefs kiss*. The build up to their meeting was written so well! I also really love the way the fic is formatted- the email style gives it an immersive feel.

2 Paradigm Shift

Paradigm Shift (114,291 words) by full_time_dreamer_behold (I don't know their tumblr, please totally feel free to tag if they have one- i'll add it). Chapters: 28/28 Rating: Teen and up Audiences Summary: Recently moved to Rosohna, Caleb accepts a job at a prestigious law firm, but the work turns out to be menial and dull. Thankfully, his life takes a turn when he makes new friends and starts taking a curious interest in the IT Manager- the handsome and intriguing Essek Thelyss. Could he be reason enough for Caleb to stay in this place? He certainly intends to find out.

A friends-to-idiots-to-lovers slow burn with a sweet ending.

What I loved: This was such a lovely slow burn. It covers hard topics in a corporate kind of setting including racism, nepotism, and power dynamics that really suck but it handled with care and well written. I also really love the disability representation here! This slow burn is so so good, I super recommend! Also bonus it's the length of a beefy novel!

But a year of industry experience will look good on his CV, and the hefty pay bump wouldn’t hurt either. How hard could a secretary gig be? What he finds behind the glittering edifice of Auriga, Wildemount’s leading name in arcane technology, is CEO Essek Thelyss, who maintains his domain with an acid tongue and an iron fist. It’s difficult not to find him intriguing, this handsome, guarded, brilliant man. It’s even more difficult not to want to please him. Caleb knows to keep it professional, though. Working late nights together at the office and lingering glances here and there don’t cross the boundaries of propriety. That is, until they do.

Why I love it: Out of all the recs this one is the SPICIEST (and I love that). Head the warnings - there may be stuff that isn't for you, but if you, like me, enjoy a 6/5 spicy level fic- congrats this one will not disappoint. This story is in progress but updates weekly which is fantastic. We have big time and hot mess CEO Essek and his personal assistant disaster bisexual Caleb- of course it's an HR scandal waiting to happen, but also, Essek might come out a better person for it. I cannot recommend this enough, this fic is so so good. In addition to the smut, it's also just a really fantastic story.

sleep, with benefits (62272 words) by KmacKatie @kmackatie Chapters: 12/12 Rating: Explicit Summary: Caleb Widogast wakes up from the first good night of sleep in far too long. It takes him a moment to realise it's because he's not in his bed. Is it the better mattress (lump-free and like a cloud), or the fact he drunkenly slept with Essek Thelyss, the colleague he's been secretly crushing on for the last six months?

Why I loved it: Let me just start off by saying kmackatie is brilliant and everything shadowgast that katie writes makes my heart sing. In this fic Essek and Caleb are captured so well- they are both big idiots who act like scared cats around one another (even though they both want the same thing) but honestly- can there be any other dynamic? This hot mess of them not using their words eventually leads to the best of endings and you should all read it because it is so lovely.

This resolution lasted a remarkable twenty-four hours. * Small-town high school science teacher Caleb Widogast has his life more or less figured out, or so he thinks. Then an unexpected variable gets thrown into the equation in the form of the new addition to the teaching staff: the handsome and clever Essek Thelyss.

Why I loved it: This fic was so sweet. I have a soft spot for fics that play with chronology in their story telling and this one does a bit of that. It is a shorter read but honestly that works really well for this love story. Caleb of course falls hard and fast and Essek does not mind at all. Some angst, but they are written so well and so soft, Brilliant <;3
