Wine-Dark Sea by fruitzbat (161010, Mature) Warnings: This piece is pretty heavily focused on post-traumatic, post-apocalyptic and post-genocidal themes. Most of the POV characters are struggling with some form of PTSD. Pairings: Kingsley/Original Character, Fjord/Jester.

Kingsley has just freed himself from something extraordinarily traumatic and is trying to rebuild something after it -- the question is more *what*.

Reccer says: This is a sequel to another iconic Kingsley-centric fic that may have already made the list; unlike the first, this is slower in pace and focuses a lot more on the characterization. I love the way that, while it does have some focus on his relationship to a supporting character, it's entirely about exploring Kingsley (as a character)'s relationship to the notion of free choice. His character arc in this is really well done. The themes are quite heavy, but are explored very thoughtfully and with the weight that they deserve.

The Fathoms Below by Lady_King (6423, Teen) Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Pairings: Fjord & Jester Lavorre & Kingsley Tealeaf

In which Kingsley discovers that the last occupant of his body had a younger sister.

Reccer 1 says: I think the most compelling thing to come out of the Nine Eyes of Lucien was that Lucien had a sister living in Rexxentrum the entire time. I like this fic's characterization of Kingsley, and the soft and heartbreaking reunion. Reccer 2 says: One of the thoughts that loomed largest in my mind after finishing Nine Eyes was "What would happen if King learned about Aldreda?" and this fic is *such* an interesting, emotion-filled exploration of that. Things did not play out how I expected they would in the best of ways, which is all I'll say on that. Never enough Kingsley fic in the world and getting into his head and how he would handle things was so fascinating and enjoyable here. Also, Essek and Kingsley's friendship is to die for and an excellent side to this fic!

Crowned Teeth (Or, An Offering Revoked) by fruitzbat (130,570, Teen) Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence Pairings: Kingsley Tealeaf/Original Character

After a standard trip towards the Bay of Gifts goes horribly wrong, Kingsley finds himself trapped and vowing to himself to hold those responsible to the light -- betrayed, isolated, and far from home, Kingsley must carve out his own destiny and forge a legacy he can say is worthy of those who came before him.

Reccer 1 says: This fic is absolutely amazing on every level, taking a sentence worth of a setting and expanding it into a beautiful bunch of worldbuilding. The original characters are amazing, the lore is air-tight, and it reads very much like a canon novel I could pick up in a bookstore. There is romance towards the end, but I consider it more of a "story with kissing" as opposed to "kissing with story" and the relationships between King and his crew are all developed well. This is also the first fic in a trilogy and all of them are worth a read. Reccer 2 says: This has some of the best worldbuilding I’ve ever seen in a fic. The world of piracy and sailing Kingsley inhabits is painstakingly described and true to life, and the portrayal of Kingsley’s state of mind, his friends and his enemies here is on point. I highly recommend this whole series for anyone who likes to wonder what Kingsley’s time on the seas and eventual journey to become Plank King might have entailed.

After all this time, even with all the pain she’s clearly in, Laudna still looks at her like she did that night in the dimly lit tavern room. Like she’d do anything Imogen asked of her. And she has. She stayed with her that night, holding her close underneath the ragged blankets. She’s done the same almost every night afterwards. She’s held her hand, in crowded rooms and abandoned shacks. She’s wiped Imogen’s tears and poured her glasses of water. Everything Imogen’s asked of her, Laudna has given happily, and then some. Why not trust her with this?

“The way I see it, you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

She’d always been able to use Laudna’s thoughts as a sounding board, carefully testing the waters. That was gone, and maybe it was for the best. People always say that love is trusting someone to catch you when you fall. Hands trembling at her sides, Imogen jumps in headfirst.

“Can I kiss you? I can't tell if it's alright or not anymore.”

Author's note: The prompt was for soft Caduceus and Kingsley, and the Writer's Corner suggested some hurt/comfort to help achieve that dynamic. I think this is the first hurt/comfort I've written? shadowgast fic rec list: the modern au edition - part one

This has been a long time coming, and hopefully the start of a few, but I have been intending to make some fic rec lists for a while. I am time-poor and generally bad at remembering to bookmark fics, but I figured I shouldn't let that stop me.

I have a love for modern au's, I write many of them, and I often see arguments against them when the source material is fantasy based for a number of reasons. But, I wanted to shine a light on some out there that tickle that box for me of being delightful.

Listed below the cut are a bunch of fics I have enjoyed, in no particular order and of varying lengths. I will of course forget some, but I hope to do some more lists in the future as I have more tabs open than I can reasonably fit in a list.

Fundamental Forces Other Than Gravity by mllekurtz (TheKnittingJedi)/@mllekurtz (1/1 chapters, 40,676 words, E, no warnings)

- A shadowgast college au with great characterisation and weaving of the Nein throughout. This one has chronic pain Essek, and I love how it is handled. As a note, Essek is briefly one of Caleb's professors, however, there is little power imbalance between them.

the fire kept closest (burns most of all) by mousecookie/@ariadne-mouse (3/3 chapters, 21,822 words, M, warnings: MCD)

- The fic that created the vocaleb tag. Essek is scientist on a research team studying a volcano, for which a tragic accident occurred years prior. It's told in a series of present and past, and the slow build of the relationships throughout the fic are gorgeous. For those eyeing the MCD warning, know that it is also tagged with 'angst with a happy ending'.

I've been lost before (and I'm lost again, I guess) by toneofjoy/@fireryn (21/21 chapters, 165,080 words, E, no warnings)

- The boys are rock climbers in this one. I know, it sounds odd, but trust me and read this. It has incredible characterisation and conversations about sexuality and gender (I hold the cafe scene in my hands so gently), as well as some wonderful sexual tension that builds until it bursts. This fic also got me into recreational rock climbing and I owe the author for it big time. As a note, Essek is Caleb's coach in this fic and this is a plot point for the background of their developing relationship.

starting with your heart (bright heart) by 2manyboys/@cluelessheroes (1/1 chapters, 9,914 words, E, no warnings)

- This has the sentence "Have you been taking four legged showers with Essek Thelyss?” in the summary and it has lived rent-free in my head ever since. Modern-wth-magic university au where they are both students with some lovely build-up of sexual tension between them. Hot smut to go along with it.

disputable presumptions by hanap/@callingvoicemail (3/? chapters, 9,606 words, E, no warnings)

- The corporate lawyer au of my dreams where they are friends with benefits and hiding it from the rest of the Nein. This has a delightful background of plot, along with ambiguous not!wizards hiding their true feelings behind an air of casualness, and snappy writing that keeps you reading.

Inside Edge, 3 Turn, and Closed Hold by MithrilWren/@mithrilwren (3/? works, 16,060 combined words, T/G/M respectively, no warnings)

- The shadowgast figure skating au I didn't know I needed until I read it. I've reread this one so many times and keep coming back to the characterisation and the way the story is slowly told across all three fics. There's a richness of the world behind what we see, and I adore coach!Beau in this one. Another with chronic pain Essek, and generally a careful understanding of the risks that go into the sport.

Labor of Love by OMGitsgreen (6/6 chapters, 43,331 words, M, warnings: CNTW)

- Bakery au. It's a classic, and it's done so well here. This is one of the earliest fics I remember reading, and it's a warm hug on a cold day that is great for when you're wanting something nice.

fermata by canyon_wizard/@canyon-wizard (8/8 chapters, 65,403 words, E, no warnings)

- A classical music au (there really needs to be more of these, please) where they are both piano students. The focus of this one is less the music world and more the character dynamics, and they are incredibly well done. The smut is hot, there is delightful miscommunication, and tense dynamics (ha) throughout.

(your face in my hands is) everything good I need by mllekurtz (TheKnittingJedi)/@mllekurtz (8/8 chapters, 25,884 words, M, no warnings)

- Professor au where they meet at a conference, Caleb a professor of modern history and Essek an expert in Latin. This fic has everything--wizards being nerds in every universe, first kisses, developing feelings, long distance relationship, emotional stakes, and dramatic declarations of love. I adore Mlle's writing (it really should not be a surprise at this point) as they have a way of capturing emotions and turning them into stunning pieces of prose. This one is also a love letter to Paris and Berlin, and please give it a read!

Shadowgast Corporate/Office-Au Rec List!

Hello I'm back again with more disaster wizard (well and in this case working professional but more office-like setting) recommendations!

This list is a little bit more bawdy than normal (I love a good smut fic, but I also try to vary the ratings on these lists for those who may not share my enthusiasm).

As per my last email (11651 words) by LivThael (I don't think they are on Tumblr- if they do please comment so I can tag- but they have a twitter listed in the notes of the fic) Chapters: 11/11 Rating: Explicit Summary: Essek Thelyss is an asshole with a questionable taste in spreadsheets. Caleb Widogast has more important and certainly more interesting things to do than filing travel expense claims. A series of mails turns into a escalating meeting. Or: Please stop writing me emails, I genuinely hate you. - Explicit content only in chapter 10.

What I loved: Anyone who has worked in an office knows a passive aggressive email when they get one. Plus we have the added bonus of having to deal with accounting to get expenses covered- ugh, so good. The energy of these passive aggressive- yet flirty workplace emails between new hire Caleb and kind-of-an-asshole Essek in accounting is *chefs kiss*. The build up to their meeting was written so well! I also really love the way the fic is formatted- the email style gives it an immersive feel.

2 Paradigm Shift

Paradigm Shift (114,291 words) by full_time_dreamer_behold (I don't know their tumblr, please totally feel free to tag if they have one- i'll add it). Chapters: 28/28 Rating: Teen and up Audiences Summary: Recently moved to Rosohna, Caleb accepts a job at a prestigious law firm, but the work turns out to be menial and dull. Thankfully, his life takes a turn when he makes new friends and starts taking a curious interest in the IT Manager- the handsome and intriguing Essek Thelyss. Could he be reason enough for Caleb to stay in this place? He certainly intends to find out.

A friends-to-idiots-to-lovers slow burn with a sweet ending.

What I loved: This was such a lovely slow burn. It covers hard topics in a corporate kind of setting including racism, nepotism, and power dynamics that really suck but it handled with care and well written. I also really love the disability representation here! This slow burn is so so good, I super recommend! Also bonus it's the length of a beefy novel!

Chapters: 38/? Rating: Explicit Summary: Caleb Widogast does not belong here. The world of sharp suits, board meetings, and billion dollar budgets is a far cry from Caleb’s preferred domain: the research lab. Where nobody cares about his faded T-shirts and raggedy jeans. But a year of industry experience will look good on his CV, and the hefty pay bump wouldn’t hurt either. How hard could a secretary gig be? What he finds behind the glittering edifice of Auriga, Wildemount’s leading name in arcane technology, is CEO Essek Thelyss, who maintains his domain with an acid tongue and an iron fist. It’s difficult not to find him intriguing, this handsome, guarded, brilliant man. It’s even more difficult not to want to please him. Caleb knows to keep it professional, though. Working late nights together at the office and lingering glances here and there don’t cross the boundaries of propriety. That is, until they do.

Or: the one where Essek Thelyss loses focus and has a consensual workplace relationship.

Why I love it: Out of all the recs this one is the SPICIEST (and I love that). Head the warnings - there may be stuff that isn't for you, but if you, like me, enjoy a 6/5 spicy level fic- congrats this one will not disappoint. This story is in progress but updates weekly which is fantastic. We have big time and hot mess CEO Essek and his personal assistant disaster bisexual Caleb- of course it's an HR scandal waiting to happen, but also, Essek might come out a better person for it. I cannot recommend this enough, this fic is so so good. In addition to the smut, it's also just a really fantastic story.

sleep, with benefits (62272 words) by KmacKatie @kmackatie Chapters: 12/12 Rating: Explicit Summary: Caleb Widogast wakes up from the first good night of sleep in far too long. It takes him a moment to realise it's because he's not in his bed. Is it the better mattress (lump-free and like a cloud), or the fact he drunkenly slept with Essek Thelyss, the colleague he's been secretly crushing on for the last six months?

Why I loved it: Let me just start off by saying kmackatie is brilliant and everything shadowgast that katie writes makes my heart sing. In this fic Essek and Caleb are captured so well- they are both big idiots who act like scared cats around one another (even though they both want the same thing) but honestly- can there be any other dynamic? This hot mess of them not using their words eventually leads to the best of endings and you should all read it because it is so lovely.

This resolution lasted a remarkable twenty-four hours. * Small-town high school science teacher Caleb Widogast has his life more or less figured out, or so he thinks. Then an unexpected variable gets thrown into the equation in the form of the new addition to the teaching staff: the handsome and clever Essek Thelyss.

Why I loved it: This fic was so sweet. I have a soft spot for fics that play with chronology in their story telling and this one does a bit of that. It is a shorter read but honestly that works really well for this love story. Caleb of course falls hard and fast and Essek does not mind at all. Some angst, but they are written so well and so soft, Brilliant <;3

Hey! Do you have any new sg ficrecs? something short?

I do, as a matter of fact! I've read a few excellent one-shots recently.

Dancing Cheek to Cheek by soot_and_salt is a lovely ballroom au, the butterflies-in-your-stomach kind of romantic. I think we need more self-contained, apparently implausible but ultimately effective, terribly romantic aus (yes, this is a challenge) (by 'we' I mean 'myself'. I need more of those).

whims and days colored orange by lakrisrot (enheduane)/@lakrisrot is a post-canon, established relationship fic that satisfied my craving for carefree seaside days and, especially, nights.

if you earn it by stygius/@stygiusfic is an incredibly hot canon divergent au set after the peace talks. If you're in the mood for some slightly messed up smut, this is your fic (check out their more recent foreign diplomacy as well for a delightful morsel of evil au).

Lastly, but only chronologically, Slip the Blindfold by timbrene/@tarydarrington is a post-canon, pre-relationship Aeor hurt/comfort one-shot that reads like a 6k trust fall.

Honorable mention to fray by saturdaysky/@saturdaysky, which is not a shadowgast fic (the pairing, which I would say is anything but romantic, is Ludinus/Essek), and which offers an interesting, original, and rather fucked up reason why Essek started keeping his hair short.

You asked for short fics, anon, but I also want to mention two ongoing wips that grabbed my attention lately and that I haven't recced here yet:

hopeless enough by 06151126 is a Formula 1 au with incredible vibes. I love hyper-specific aus and this one reminds me a lot of the climbing au, if you're in the market for something similar;

and a body in absentia by nonwal/@nonwal, a Scourger au, rated very much E, with some thoughtful and original representation of demi Essek.

The smell of incense wafted through the room and Affogato had his disciples separated into several rows of 5 by 5 who stood kneeling on the floor, waiting expectantly for their master's words.

- This has been a very moving meeting... The fact that you have learned so much from me fills me with pride," he said with a smile.

The disciples remained silent with their eyes a little low respecting the silence that was given to their mentor, Affogato widened his smile and went down the small staircase and walked the row in sepulchral silence, the only thing that could be heard were his steps and rustling of the fabric of his clothes, the brunet passed his eyes one by one of the young people of tender and appetizing skin... They were all so appetizing, all were like to devour them whole in the same room.

When Affogato reached the end of the rows, seeing the backs of everyone, he turned on his heels to the table of exquisite sweets prepared at each meeting, grabbed two chocolate bonbons and put one in his mouth, delighting in the sweet and full of sugar flavor that counteracted the bitter and tasteless food of that kingdom; He held the second chocolate between his fingers and went back through the rows until he stopped in front of a young disciple, no more than 20 years old, with a sharp face and the blindfold firmly fastened, he raised his face putting his finger on his chin and put the chocolate candy in his mouth and asked him in murmurs to feel and enjoy the taste.

The young man savored the taste of the sugar between his lips and still without saying a word he smiles at his master who bends down and brings his face close to the ear of the young man of dark complexion and white clothes.

- I would like to see you in my room tonight... You have earned the honor of my teaching you something very special...

The young man raises his eyebrows in surprise, he does not speak because he does not have his master's permission to do so, but his face lights up with illusion and he bows in gratitude.

- You more than anyone else have stood out from all your peers and tonight will be to take you to another level from which you will finally be allowed to remove the blindfold from your eyes.

The young apprentice felt a thrill run through him as removing the blindfold or allowing himself that luxury in front of his master only meant that he had achieved the degree of confidence and teaching that he had been practicing for years.

- Master... - the disciple began to say.

Affogato silenced him softly whispering a "shhh..." and smiled at him, then he walked back to the beginning of the rows and gave the order to get up; all like the automatons got up and bowed to their master and very disciplined and in silence they left the room one by one, a last look to the selected disciple before leaving to do their work.

Once alone Affogato uncoiled his snake tail that encircled his waist, the mere idea that the day had come to taste human flesh delighted him and provoked in his body a heat that could be compared to excitement since repressing such impulses was an odyssey for his bestial body that now had to bear the animal impulses of the desire to devour the beings that serve him and follow his orders, but could nature be blamed? They knocked on the door, politely the disciple entered and bowed in front of his master, Affogato who was sitting on his knees just turned his head to see him and nodded for him to come closer, the brunet stood up and slowly approached towards the boy who was moderately shorter than him, Affogato made a gesture with his hand and passing them behind the nape of the young man's neck he removed the purple bandage that had been carried for years, the young man could appreciate the ivory colored irises of his master and those slit pupils that were inherited from his tribe. Since the room was illuminated by candles the young man had not noticed the huge snake tail of his master that crawled with the silence of a whisper but the small reptilian scales that stood out slightly from Affogato's face to the translucence of the candles, nor did he notice the dangerous animal that was in a high corner watching him and waiting to be given the order to dine.

- My faithful boy..." Affogato began, taking the trusting young man as far as the light could project them both, "From among my disciples I have chosen you in a special way for a small celebration that I honor every month. There is nothing that fills me with more joy than to share this with someone so loyal.

The young man listened in disciplined silence, Affogato invited him to sit and they both kneeled down and sat facing each other, listening to the howling of the wolves patrolling outside the huge wall.

Affogato got up and went for a beautiful porcelain teapot decorated and painted with beautiful elderflowers and two black porcelain chatjan cups commonly used in traditional celebrations; pouring the hot tea delicately and almost ceremonially he leaves the teapot on his left and toasts to the health of both of them.

- Affogato… - finally speaks the young man as he already had the confidence to do so - I am grateful that you have considered me to spend this evening with you and continue to honor you, I have dedicated myself at an early age to follow your philosophy and serve you.

Affogato smiled and looks at his disciple whose eyes look crystalline as if he was about to cry from the happiness that gave him remembering every teaching and patience of his master but he had to control his impulses, he lowers his arms and stiffens again taking a deep breath and apologizing for his altered emotion, Affogato says nothing because his eyes are fixed on the delicious skin of the young man hiding under those clothes, a young and tender skin, with a taste as sweet as cake and tender as freshly made butter, the slices of meat he imagined devouring, the blood that would drip down his neck and not only stain the delicate fabrics but also splash on the floor, the thought of all that made his mouth water so he took a long sip of tea to hide the growing hunger that was pounding in his chest.

Once the tea was finished Affogato approached his disciple and put his hand on his chest with a somewhat haughty look he opened his lips to ask…

- Are you willing to let him eat you?

The young man was shocked by that question and incredulously didn't know what to answer since he was referring to... Was he really just going to devour? Like a piece of meat?

And before answering he already had Affogato on top of him, grabbing his wrists, nailing his claws and using his strong snake tail to seize his torso and exerting so much pressure that you could hear little by little the breaking of each of the ribs of the poor disciple who coughed blood and tried to scream and move from the pain, making guttural sounds and moving his head up and stretching his neck in a failed attempt to breathe but it was useless, very useless, Affogato exerted an overwhelming pressure.

- You have given me the honor of devouring your body - sighed the man in a hoarse voice - my hunger can only be limited to savoring one of you once a month and that is why tonight makes it very special... You who are my prey I will delight myself with your young body and your flesh, I will chew, tear every muscle, fiber and break the bones of such an exquisite dinner that very few times I have the luxury of giving myself such pleasure.

Small strands of saliva dripped from the corner of the brunet's lip while he smiled showing his sharp snake fangs, his animalistic intent and growing hunger made him jump straight to the face of his victim and tear off his skin with a jerk staining with blood the surroundings of the hair of the young man killed by suffocation and Affogato chewed with delight the delicious flesh of the one who once followed him loyally and followed his orders now was turned into the dinner of a counselor whose hybrid condition filled his palate with ecstasy, He licks ruby that had fallen on the neck and rips off clothes that the young man would never wear again and continues to lick the thick blood with his while his hands are placed on the chest of the youngest and with his strength he opens it exposing the cracked and almost crushed ribs over the heart and lungs, Affogato plunges his face into that open bed and rips out part of the heart with his sharp teeth and chews it organ by organ, tearing it to shreds, the heart is a small paste of guts as well as the lungs, Meanwhile the dark-haired man licked his fingers full of blood and wiped with his wrist and sleeves of his clothes the blood on his cheeks, he sighed relieved and sat down next to the corpse looking at it with a smile and stroking his arms, stretching his hands towards the dry eyes and sinking his nails to take them out of his beads and put them in his mouth like delicious candies.

Approaching the arm and between bites and bites manages to tear it and call his snake with slight hissing which did not take long to approach his master and open his big mouth to receive the food given by his owner which pushed back to swallow it and have it a good time in his stomach to digest it slowly, Affogato also decided to give his pet what was the part of the liver and stomach to the huge boa that devoured them gratefully.

His desire goes down to the torso and biting hard he takes huge slices of the young man's right thigh which he devours in one gulp just like a real snake, he loved it, the taste was so sweet, he could feel the warmth of this blood trickle down his chin and reach his chest staining his sleeping clothes and the warm dark wooden floor, he gasps unconsciously as the tingling of his nature made him get slightly hot, was devouring not a sign of passion? Even for the most elegant dinners he devours and tastes full of passion the palate desiring more and more.

It was already past eleven o'clock at night and Affogato was sitting on the ground next to the corpse of which only bones and carrion of the skin remained stuck to them, caressing with his fingertips the head of his docile pet, both satisfied with the rich feast they had feasted on beside a floor stained almost dry, the huge boa whose scales glistened in the light of the candles that had not yet burned out, rested a quarter of his body in his master's lap and the rest was rolled up at his side.

The night had gone as planned, the counselor was happy and no one would ever know or suspect the slightest of his secrets.
