The Cowboy Hat Rule

(Established Steddie & Byler & Jancy & Lumax & Elmax & Henderhop —> basically a mini ficlet with the Party being equestrians. This might make its way into one of my AUs. Idk.)

Eddie knows the cowboy hat rule.

Steve doesn’t.

Steve takes Eddie’s cowboy hat jokingly one night when they’re goofing off and mostly drunk at a bar.

Nancy, Robin, Vickie, Jonathan, and Argyle are hanging out at a quiet high top in the back. Max and El are playing darts, while Max is getting more and more frustrated because El might be cheating and using her powers to hit the bullseye every time.

Lucas, Dustin, Mike, and Will are sat at the bar, watching a more than tipsy Steve shamelessly flirt with their DM.

“Do you think he knows the rule?” Dustin asks, swirling whatever was left of his rather disgusting beer inside of the tall necked bottle.

Lucas rolls his eyes, “Does it look like Steve knows the rule? He just ran off with Eddie’s hat.” He takes a sip of his drink, wrinkling his nose as it burns down his throat.

“I didn’t know about it until Dustin had that, uh encounter, at that bar we went to a few months ago.” Will chimes in, leaning against the bar top to get a better view of Eddie chasing Steve around the bar. “I swore Mike was going to kill the guy because he kept hitting on me after Dustin turned him down,”

“I would have killed him, too.” Mike mutters from next to Will, instinctively grabbing Will’s hand to pull him closer.

Will rolls his eyes, a teasing lilt in his voice, “Well yeah, I knew you would, but I much prefer your jealousy not end up with a man buried six feet underground. I don’t know that I would want to be with an outlaw.”

Mike huffs, mild irritation overcoming him, “I was just trying to protect your honor,” he objects, leaning his chin on Will’s head.

“Mhmm,” Will hums, glancing up at Mike before turning back to say something to Dustin and Lucas.

After a few moments of silence, Mike breaks the quiet again, still not quite over the last encounter involving the hat rule.

“Will, he didn’t even ask if you had a boyfriend!” Mike outbursts, well aware that he is shamelessly whining because he’s jealous. Sue him. He didn’t like it when other people flirted with Will, and he never claimed to not be a bit of a jealous boyfriend.

“What if he was some weirdo that just tried to hit on you and then murdered you if you had said yes to going home with him?” Mike argues.

Will makes a noncommittal hum in response, as he leaned his head on Mike’s chest, the buzz of alcohol warming his body. Will wasn’t going to complain, in all honesty, he found it a bit amusing that even after months of being together, Mike was still a little jealous.

“You know, I wouldn’t ever leave you, right?” Will mumbles.

“Not even for Dustin?” Lucas interrupts the couple’s private moment, as is the usual when the Party goes out together.

“William, if you’d leave me for Dustin, I’d leave you for Lucas - and that’s never going to happen.” Mike says as he flips Lucas off.

“Well,” Will replies, pretending to think it over, “Dustin is possibly the nicest person I know, and he’d be the best boyfriend because he pays attention and he doesn’t forget to come to Vet appointments for his horse,”

“That was one time!” Mike all but yells, flabbergasted that Will would actually consider leaving him for Dustin, but equally as horrified at the prospect of dating Lucas who is also dating Max who is also dating El who is also dating Dustin.

Lucas blows a kiss at Mike, as Mike glowers at their best friends… and if Will noticed Mike’s hold on him tighten a little bit, he doesn’t say anything to indicate that he’s uncomfortable.

“Besides, you ride hunt seat! You didn’t even have a cowboy hat on, you had your baseball cap on,” Mike mutters to Will, keeping his voice quiet enough that the others can’t hear.

Will laughs lightly, because of course Mike Wheeler is the most jealous person he knows, but only when it comes to Will… and Will often finds it at least little endearing.

“The hat rule applies to cowboy hats for the most part, but sometimes it’s modified to baseball caps,” Will points out, before placing a kiss on the back of Mike’s hand, lacing their fingers together.

Mike huffs in slight irritation, before his focus shifts to the older crowd of adults with them.

“Stevie, come on, can I have my hat back?” Eddie all but whines.

Steve had been running around with Eddie’s hat for nearly fifteen minutes, and Eddie is seriously regretting dating a jock that did track growing up. Who knew Steve Harrington could run around that fast while drunk?

“Steve, please just give me the hat back, babe,” Eddie asks again, walking towards a drunken Steve as if he’s approaching a wounded animal.

“No, Munson, I like your hat. I think I want to keep it on, sorry.” Steve grins, making finger guns at Eddie.

“I’m shocked no one told him the hat rule,” Nancy mutters, shaking her head.

“Oh, and you know the hat rule, Wheeler?” Jonathan asks, quirking an eyebrow at his girlfriend.

“Jonathan, I’ve been riding horses since I was seven, and I’m not new to the mounted shooting scene, you get hit on at a few bars, and you figure it out.” Nancy shoots back, leaning her head against his shoulder. He shrugs, moving to lean his own head against hers.

“Maybe we should have told Steve about the hat rule before he got drunk. . .” Vickie chimes in, her finger drawing patterns on the lacquered wood of the high top table.

“No way, this is so much funnier!” Robin says, watching as Eddie finally retrieves his hat from his boyfriend.

“Hey, Eddie!” Max yells from the dart board, “isn’t the rule that you have to fight or ride the person that stole your hat?”

El is beside Max, nearly doubled over in laughter.

“Ride it like you stole it, and all, right?” Max grins at Eddie as he sends her his most withering glare.

“Really, I hate all of you.” Eddie gripes, adjusting his hat, and helping his very drunk boyfriend back to their spot at the high top.

“Hypothetically, if anyone ever tries to take your hat, would you let me challenge them to an old fashioned duel?” Mike’s breath is warm against Will’s ear, he shudders in the warmth of the bar, and it feels as if his every nerve has been set on fire. He shifts out of Mike’s grasp for a moment, to look at his boyfriend, puzzled as to why the topic is still being discussed.

“Okay, but, Mike, first off I’m not dating an outlaw. No matter how endearingly jealous you may be, I don’t want to marry a criminal. And second, you’ve never shot a gun in your life?” Will means to say it as a statement, but it comes out as more of a question. He’s almost certain that in the years he’s known Mike, Mike has never shot a gun, let alone a dueling pistol.

“Growing up with Nancy doing mounted shooting has its perks,” Mike shrugs, turning his face into his shoulder to try to hide the red tinge coming over his face.

He takes a sip of his water before turning back to Will.

(I’m probably adding to this later, but that’s as good as it’s getting so far. I’ve been in a bit of a writers block funk lately, but wanted to try adding to this idea.)

@punkharringtxn I’ve had this idea in my head for weeks since you posted about Appalachian!Eddie and well… I keep ending up on cowboy TikTok so, I felt this was a necessary addition.

What Starts With A Box Ends With A Box

Hello 👋 This is another one I'm really excited about. it's another one inspired by Cowboy Bebop but again you don't actually need to know anything about it. It just inspired bounty hunter Billy/Cyborg Steve. With a little side of Elmax and everyone's aged up in this. Here's a snippet. More like the first three bits but I do what I want 😁

Billy is on his ship, trying to figure out if the price of fuel is worth heading to Hades station for the bounty he is looking at when an incoming call drags him out of his thoughts. It is an automated holo message, as soon as he hits the accept button the holo lights up with the Harrington Crop logo. Billy lets out a low whistle, a big company means a big payday, the holo flashes again and a squat dark haired man takes its place fiddling with his tie clearly unaware the recording has already started.

It is nearly a full minute before the man starts talking “The Harrington Corporation is looking to enlist the cowboy organization of bounty hunters for a high paying mark. Early this morning one of their main facility was broken into by a terrorist organization calling themselves the AIRO.” Billy frowns he has never heard of them, it has suspicion prickling but he keeps listening. “Their original motivation is unknown but we suspect the break-in and property damage was to mask their true purpose of stealing proprietary property belonging to the Harrington Corporation.”

The holo flashes again and a clip plays, people in masks bumbling around, some of them trashing things and others on computers clearly looking for something. The screen flashes and it is to the would be terrorists wheeling out a big metal box with the label fuzzed out and that suspicion only grows, what exactly are the Harrington’s trying to hide. The man comes back and rattles off more information, last seen whereabouts and the price of the bounty for the lost property and Billy cannot exactly afford to turn down a payday like that.

“So are we going?” Max asks from where she is hanging down from a vent, scaring him half to death and making him jump and bang his good arm into the console. “I think we should go.” She says with a grin, lifting back up into the vent before Billy can get a swat at her.

“You don’t get a vote.” Billy hisses the way he always does and she does not. She got on his ship without permission, nearly got him killed by his old man and he has been threatening to take her back to Calisto and her mother ever since. Of course that was nearly five years ago and they are both aware of what an empty threat it is, it does not stop Billy from making it though.

“Can I come with you?” Max asks, the way she always does when they land on a planet, always wanting to explore more than help him catch his mark.

“No but you can head to the market for those replacement valves you said we needed, we'll actually be able to afford them after I complete this job.” Billy says, it is his way of keeping her safe while giving her a little room to explore. Even if something happens it is not as if she cannot take care of herself, Billy has made sure she can, he also has at least three different trackers on her just in case something goes wrong and she cannot.

That is all she needs to hear, already out the hanger door before Billy can even finish talking. He shakes his head and sits on the little work bench built into the haul. He rolls his pant leg up and peels the synthetic skin back from his knee and adjusts the pins for Hydra's gravity. He lost the left half of the bone chasing a bounty when he first started to a faulty gravity bullet to the knee cap, he is lucky had the thing been fully functioning and it’s gravity well full size he would have been stardust. He adds a little lube to the mechanical joint before smoothing the skin back down and watches it glow as it meshes back with his natural skin. It would have been cheaper without the synthetic skin but it helps protect from rusting and other irritants getting in and messing things up. The whole thing is still cheaper than having the bone and skin and muscle regrown.

Billy grabs his smokes and climbs in his speeder, still a little dinged up from his last firefight, he will have to remind Max to bang those out, the shielding is not as effective when it is full of holes and one of the left thrusters is still struggling, he adds it to the list as he head toward low town where an old contact work out of a diner.

“You know you can’t fucking smoke in here!” Benny shouts from behind the bar when Billy walks in with a cigarette hanging between his lips, it is not even lit but he is sure Benny can see that and is just taking the excuse to give him a hard time. Billy holds it up to show it off before sticking it behind his ear as he walks to the bar taking a seat on one of the cracked barstools bolted down around the counter. The olds school diner look still persists even half a century after earth was destroyed and Benny’s been running this one as long as Billy has known the man.

“What do you want, kid?” Benny asks as he grabs a glass from the back counter and flips it over before filling it with something from the tap and sliding it in front of Billy. It is green and bubbling and Billy knows it is probably going to taste gross, Benny likes to use him to taste test, price of assistance he says despite the fact that he definitely still charges for the information he has whether it be favor or credits depends on the information.

“You hear about the Harrington Corp robbery.” Billy asks lifting the plastic cup with trepidation and taking a long sip when Benny just stares him down. It is surprisingly not as bad as most of the things Benny comes up with, kind of a lemon-lime flavor. Billy deposits the cup back down ready to tell Benny as much when the aftertaste hits and has him spluttering, it is sour so sour and dry, how is his mouth so dry?

“Drink this, it's just some water.” Benny says, chuckling as he hands Billy another glass and he eyes it skeptical but it does not have any strange smell and it looks like water. “I haven’t quite worked out the after effects of this one, it tastes good in the beginning though right?” Billy glares at the man as he gulps the water down and he just tips his head back and laughs some more.

“I don’t think you should be getting involved with the Harrington Corp business, they’re up to some shady things I hear.” Benny says more serious, tone low even though the only other customer is on the other side of the room in a booth eating pie and reading off a holo screen.

“Oh I know but I can’t pass up that bounty. Never heard of the AIRO before, you got any leads?” Billy asks as he slides his cup back across the counter.

“The Artificial Intelligence Rights Organization is pretty new. The lead will cost you.” Benny says as he dumps the bright green liquid out and washes the glass.

“I know.” Billy says with an eye roll, they have been doing this for how long and Benny still reminds him every time as if he will somehow forget.

“You're not the only one asking.” Benny says with an air of caution, it is a warning and not one Billy actually needs. A bounty this big there will be plenty of competition vying for the same prize and sometimes that competition gets deadly.

“Not surprised. What will it cost me this time?” Billy asks, stapling his fingers and hoping it is a favor and not credit, Billy is barely in the black right now.

“Got a friend who needs a ride off planet, him and his little girl. AOIR’s main base happens to be off planet, so you can drop them on your way.” Benny says and Billy frowns.

“I’m a bounty hunter, my ship isn’t exactly meant to chauffeur folks around.” Billy points out, it is a decent sized ship with a big main living space and a few spare rooms but it is his home and base of operations, the space is not meant to accommodate guests. It only barely accommodates Max now because she stubbornly keeps moving things in making it homier, Billy pretends to hate it but he is kind of attached to the throw pillows on the couch they are good for impromptu naps.

“I know, it’s why I’m asking you. You won’t ask for papers and that’s the sort of transport they need. If you end up crossing with the AIRO before you drop them, he'll also be handy in a fight. From the video there’s at least four of them and only one of you, you may need the help.” Benny says, and Billy rolls his eyes, he has gone up against worse odds on a bounty before.

“They didn’t look that scary in the video, they all seemed pretty inept.” Billy says his only concern might be the one he saw hunched over the computer terminal in the video, if they can hack Harrington’s cyber security they can probably hack his ships too, best to not let whoever it was under that hood anywhere near his ship.

“They didn’t show the full video in their broadcast, whoever they are they knew what they were doing, took out all of the Harrington security before going in and it was a lot, both the computer automated and the guards. “As long as it’s not fucking bio weapons again, I hate dealing with bio weapons.” Billy says, last time had been a mess and he had not even gotten paid in the end. He still refuses to go back to the Helix outpost, he did not do all that damage by himself and he refuses to pay the bill they keep trying to settle him with.

“So you’re taking the deal?” Benny asks, like he does not already know the answer. Billy settles him with a placid look the man would not have kept talking if he was not sure Billy was taking him up on squirreling his friend off planet. “Great, I'll send the information over with Hopper, keep safe kid.” Benny grins with a clap on his shoulder as a dismissal as he heads out from behind the bar to take care of his new customer.
