Some S4 Soundtrack analysis that led me to some interesting discoveries (Part 1)
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now, but after digging (and I mean DIGGING through the soundtrack and all of the music played in all 4 seasons, I finally found some interesting inspiration for the show.)
First up, a track called “The Box” that plays when Jonathan and Will have the talk at Surfer Boy Pizza.
This track has legitimately driven me insane because @chirpsythismorning mentioned it to me a few weeks ago while I was on vacation… and I took that time off and ran with it for analyzing. . .
So, what I found was that the track “The Box” actually comes from a very interesting silent Sci-Fi / Fantasy short film written by an incredible team of deaf artists! It’s about 20 minutes long, and it’s a rather powerful film.

Anyways, I thought it was rather interesting that “The Box” was playing when Jonathan and Will have their talk and Will doesn’t remember having a Lego stuck up his nose…
The shots in Mather that felt very much like it inspired a lot of the ideas surrounding Vecna and where NINA was placed in the show…
Now, a lot of these shots caught my eye while watching the short film…
But something else that is important to note is the description of the film itself…
It’s interesting, watching the main character battle within himself and there’s some odd flashbacks, almost, that he has that aren’t able to be explained within the context of the movie, they just occur - it’s one of those things that just is.
And after watching, I looked up the filming location for Mather… and it is Coyote Dry Lake in Barstow, California.
But I noticed that the shots and the blocking in Mather looked familiar to me because of these shots:
They didn’t film at the same place, but the setting and what they borrowed from the film Mather (2019) was intentional.
Anyways, “The Box” plays when Mather finds the seeds (I believe). It was kind of hard to pinpoint the music.
I’ll add more to this once I get more screenshots, but for now, I’m leaving this as is and I’ll edit it with updates later.

#okay so.#in my culture having premonitory dreams is a huge thing right#not just dreams but also just feelings and generally speaking things into being#and its one of those things where you just know what to brush off as superstition and anxiety and what you should pay attention to#i have dreamt about death 2 nights in a row#in a very “abstract'' sense which isnt how my dreams normally are when it comes to these things#but basically the night b4 last i dreamt that (hear me out. stay with me) i was investigating a location for the oiar? the magnus institute#and me and whoever else was there found ourselves in a graveyard and as we tried to leave we met up with an avatar of the end#so i went back and reported that i was ''touched by the end“ i.e. my days were numbered#last night i dreamt about a zombie apocalypse which is something i dream abt relatively often so normally I'd be like whatever#except i woke up and went back to sleep and the dream continued?? how often does that ever happen to anyone#the entire dream took place in my house in my home country and we were basically packing our bags to move somewhere safer#but my dad wasnt home yet from work yet and i was unsettled#and nowwwww im anxious as hell and idk why#could it be nothing? yes. is it most likely nothing? yes#i just wanted to talk abt it#i know i might sound slightly crazy but. yeah#shut up kayla

hi, I'm gonna add irey park-west to my muse list (maybe to the on request list cause she's so specific to certain characters) and I need everyone to see the vision of lian, irey, and mar'i being reflections of their fathers (roy, wally, dick) not only in taking on their individual behavioral/personality traits but also in the mirrored oldest (lian), middle (irey), youngest (mar'i) and mar'i being the one who really leads them

Honestly I adore that he chose Arson and More as title tracks because More is basically his first instance where he says he wants out of the box, to explore and go outside of the identity of Hope that was basically bestowed on him (‘zeus made me hope’ & bighit made him hope… he talked a lot about how it was chance that made him j-hope, which later became almost his entire identity musically), and Arson is a perfect continuation and adds to the concept. Arson is a very peculiar ending song because it feels like a teaser for things to come. It doesn’t have a sense of finality (=this is the end of the album) only promises more, what’s to come, it’s a declaration of who he is and how he wants to be. I joked a lot with friends that all the songs after the interlude are about being finally outside the box (with all the fears and thoughts that come with that) and the sentiment reminded me of the funny poem you see floating on tumblr The tiger / He destroyed the cage / Yes / YES / The tiger is out. Arson+MORE feels like Hobi making peace with his complexities while remaining j-hope. Idk I have MANY thoughts about this album and the way the songs are ordered —@hoseeok from the main :3
[re: this] lyde i'm OBSESSED with the theory of Music Box: Reflection being the signal for him exiting the box - we hear the winding at the start, the sound and the heavy breathing together feel so anticipatory. like, this is j-hope inside the box, waiting to burst out. it's imminent.
but where Arson feels like stepping out of the box, What If.../Safety Zone/Future almost feel like time freezing before the release - that reflection. he's so desperate to escape but so afraid of the unknown.
in What If... he talks about how the name j-hope has given him purpose, but like you mentioned, it was bestowed upon him. would he have been able to achieve everything without j-hope? as jung hoseok - is there some middle ground? and if j-hope is hope itself, where is hope for him? AGH "hold up/ can i do this?"
i could talk about Safety Zone ALL DAY (@cordiallyfuturedwight knows this) in that it feels like an extension of Blue Side. with blue side being that place of rest, comfort, nostalgia, safety.
he's asking where his safe zone can be found - is it "the blue that is far, far away?" - almost like he's lost that comfort of blue side, and is fighting between the safety of going back, and the fear and hope of what lies ahead. if he chooses to leave the box, is he also leaving blue side behind?
Future feels like an acceptance. of his identity, of walking into the unknown, outside the box. the repetition of who i was vs. who i am!! "it now feels most proper and most me" and almost in a continuation of What If... talking about how for so long he's been this source of hope and courage and faith but had left none for himself, then at the end "with courage and faith, i bet hope on (future)"
i love your interpretation of Arson and i agree completely, it's a perfect continuation of MORE but it feels so much like a beginning.
Jack In The Box as a whole is j-hope coming to terms with his identity, accepting all aspects of himself both as jung hoseok and j-hope, as well as facing his fears and aspirations as an artist. his desire for more, escaping the box, and the worries associated with that. and he did it all in twenty minutes.

Why does the track Lay-Z-Boy play twice in season 1?
It plays here when Mike is showing El the living room.
But the track Lay-Z-Boy also plays here? After the funeral, when Joyce remembers a memory. She's joking with Will, in this scene:
And it's almost as if this kid has never had more than a 12 pack box of crayons to color with. . . because the main colors he uses here are blue, yellow, red, green, brown, gray, and black (from what I could see in the scene)…?
But that’s just coincidence, right?
Just like this kid doesn’t know that fireworks. . . aren’t. . . suckers? Will is about 14 at this point, right? Now, why would he be asking if a firework. . . is sweet? He actually means it literally here.
If you look for it, there are scenes where Will is just as - if not equally - as clueless about things (you’d think he would have experienced living with Joyce) as El is . . .
Like this clip where Jonathan reminds a possessed Will about building Castle Byers. . .
(and as a comparison, we already know that Lonnie is good at hitting a nail on the head. . . because he fixes the hole in the house in S1. . .)
So, why would Lonnie - the man dead set on teaching his boy(s) how to take on toxic masculine roles (to the point that he makes Jonathan kill a harmless rabbit at the age of ten), not teach Will how to hammer a nail in to keep a board in place?
It's all a little suspicious if you ask me...

me and my mom after (checks watch) 58 hours without power
