Highly Aesthetic Disc Golf
I'm trying to imagine what the limits of blending disc golf, art, and nature could look like. The game is beautiful to me, and I have already mentioned that in previous posts. I will keep on doing it!
I think about the juxtaposition of what we expect disc golf baskets to look like and the natural landscapes where they tend to be placed. I can see that contrast as being a poetic metaphor for the game. Nature flows carelessly and effortlessly. It strengthens slowly, and sustainably. Then the basket- Ridged and static. Placed deliberately in hopes that it does not change. Cemented into that spot and supported only by that man-made material that was applied according to strict rules dictated by the material under a time restriction. Get it set and straight and hope none of this flowing, growing nature around it can ever rub off on it and make it change.
I'm fine with the steel cages. Because it helps us to have a consistent and predictable finish line to reach. We also have that kind of duality at play in us physically when we are throwing the disc. Our bodies are structured more like a tree than a clay pigeon launcher. We naturally flow more like an organic thing than a machine. When we play disc golf tho, we have to combine those. Our bodies move both naturally and smoothly but must execute that movement with a machine-like consistency.
Writing that made me think of the robots from Boston Dynamics. They are always looking more and more organic in movement every time a new version is released. So the line between machine and nature seems to be blending in many ways. It seems like that is the trend. I like nature more than machines, so I hope it is nature winning the race. Nature can swallow up machines and give us a more organic relationship between the two. I would prefer that as opposed to the fear we share that our dependence on technology is forcing us to grow farther from a connection with nature.
That is the inspiration for the drawings in this post. In this case, I combined Nature, Man-made steel, and a Human figure. That represents one area of this bit of inspiration. I plan to do more drawings and make more posts thinking about what things would look like pushed to different extremes. How can disc golf course design lean into the industrial forms that disc golf baskets represent in the game's landscape? All cement and steel and chains and welds. Sharp angles, hard corners, engineering magic.
Of course on the other hand- How can the aesthetics of the game be taken to an organic extreme? Let nature dictate the course in a way that elevates the experience. How can landscape intervention and sculpture be used to make disc golf targets that are not metal baskets? Or discs that are made to be one with the terrain but still stand out when we need to find them.

ko-fi commission of a very special pony. They asked for a pigeon, and I thought tumbling pigeon would suit her quite well. These breeds are prized for their aerobatics and backflips when flying and taking off.
