Hey, I do my Demiflora from the comic Countdown to countdown for @velocesmells, she´s a very good artist.

This boy is based off the pansy flower, him has the power to manipulate both the will and the memories of a person, but only can do it when he cuts himself, be it the skin as the hair and, depending on how much cut, the manipulation will be more powerful.

Countdown to Countdown

I have not been on tumblr for, I think, a year? I haven’t drawn much in that time either. I started writing again - so I feel good getting back into something that I loved doing.

And on Pinterest I guess I was going down a pretty deep rabbit hole of fanart and original art. One of those pieces of original art being a picture of what I quickly learned was Iris Black sitting in a bathroom stall.

It linked me to this innocuous little webcomic...or. Was it a choose your own adventure? No...our protagonist is still making his own choices - there’s no way to divert the path. That you know of.

But all those little choices in the comic panels makes it feel like Iris has the power to go into paintings and he’s...going into his own. To make those choices.

Is that...weird to say? Does that make sense?

What I mean is, he actually possesses the ability to reach into art. That’s his gimmick, in this post apocalyptic setting. But he is art. With these oddly intriguing video game references, “to be or not to be” drawn into the corners of particular panels, and the next panel indicating a choice made for things that can be controlled. Just by Iris.

Or so the deliriously great supporting character Lillium White makes us think.

I sorta adore Lillium to pieces. Please don’t make me end up hating Lillium.

Holy shit, what kind of fantastic, self-indulgent meta-ish thing did I find?

It was like I was 18 again, couldn’t sleep, clicking next, next, next - it’s still very much the beginning of the story, surreal and building a simple yet vastly insane world at the same time - I feel like I could do a damn close reading on this.

The artist may read this and laugh. “Girl, calm your tits - this ain’t that deep.”

But I bookmarked the site. Haven’t done that either, in quite some time. And I recommend it, if only to try and decipher and understand whatever midnight (2:30AM) oil burned word vomit I just spat out.

Probably didn’t help I was listening to post-rock the whole time.

God, I’m so ready for this ride.

Name: Jane Doe Age: ? DOB: ? Gender: Female Likes: Safety, being able to sleep, save spots Dislikes: Hunters, large crowds, not knowing Sexuality: Pansexual with a strong preference for women Ability: Able to make people forget; the memories she takes get transfered to her though

Story: Even though she can take people’s memories, she has very little of her own: not knowing where she came from, her name, her parents. Nothing but vague recollections of how to survive and the end of the world. Has something akin to PTSD because of all the memory transfers.

Psychosis related dpdr ‘symptom showing’ character Iris (there will likely be some degree of supernatural/fantasy type explanations for it later though so that should be kept in mind) is the main character in the webcomic “Countdown to Countdown” and they experience intense unreality (even if not all cannon to be illness based). and personally having Primary DPDR mental health issues, it's something I really was happy to stumble across ! for dissociative and hallucination symptoms to be so amazingly represented is something I didn't want to keep to my self (obvs triggers warnings so read at your own risk if dissociative, etc).

The comic shows so many varied symptoms and showed his pain in very real ways, from these dissociative and PTSD traits which is very rare to find in most, even very well written for mainstream media mentally ill characters.

and of course the art is amazing and the characterisation is stunningly written.

more in-depth on the Symptoms the artist describes in this character (from my perspective) includes:

Derealisation- detachment of reality (things around feeling 2-D and unreal)

flashbacks that induce derealisation (dream like)

Depersonalisation-detachment from self- and he is cannonly described that “he doesn't like looking at his face when he’s alone”

Emotional numbing (dissociation)

Confusion around current emotional states

derealisation (video game like) - the game like interpretation of choices and influence on the world around, which is known as his view (as he is the main character), and describing him or his actions detached from himself, is very representative of how someone can process the dpdr detached symptoms as.

only describing the environment as he is able to experience it, so its more of a way his brain displays information as he’s picking up, unlike how a game would where it would display potential information or tell the player things that they wouldn't be able to know yet, proving it's not just a game like art style chosen by the artist

the hints of his struggles and efforts with memory retrieval from PTSD related amnesia.

PTSD (the comic both describes his childhood (shows as dissociative amnesia) and shows his struggles with new trauma)

hallucinations, some related to his trauma and some to his unreality feelings.

chronic Deja Vu (answered as fantasy based in story though so tw)

avoidance symptoms likely from illness and social trauma

.

academia- is very bright and has clearly strong potential but is limited by his ‘differences’, stressed from peers and the tole his health has on him are represented as having a real effect on him.

the comic also explores ill-treatment in therapy or by peers and really gets behind the emotions and thoughts that can come with suffering from mental health issues.

ofc the cherry on top is the supportive (soon to be) boyfriend of the main character Iris Black!! to round up my points on why you should give it a read

sorry its a long post! and i know the terminology im using hasn't been used around this character (related to dpdr or ptsd) so obviously this post is just me talking about the qualities and mental health traits I resonate with as a result of my own illnesses to this character and comic, but i really wanted to share what i saw from reading the webseries as i know it helps me feel more grounded with my own health, and i hope it can do the same for others !! :))

(plus the zombie and fantasy plot with such charismatic and complex characters is also what makes this work 10/10 for me) 👌👌
