Note
I have liked the ship Cleril since the very beginning. Yes, I know that Peril is very toxic in her mannerisms, but I still feel like she can improve, and she already has! By the tenth book she's learned to not put Clay on a pedestal and trust in other dragons besides him. Obviously they shouldn't get in a relationship right away, but I think they'd be a good couple after a few years of healing.
Also, people don't focus on Clay's side of the ship enough. He's seen Peril grow and change for the better, and she was the first real friend he had outside the mountain. Plus (getting into headcanon territory now), I've noticed that a lot of dragons think that his entire personality is food. The other dragonets of destiny are not exempt from that; assuming that the books are warped in the protagonist's limited perspective, all Tsunami, Glory, and Starflight think of Clay as the food-obsessed guy first and the bigwings second. Even Moon and Qibli’s POVs do that too! Yet Clay's own book portrays him as a complex character, and Sunny sees him as her protector and likely-favorite sibling, so her book is more representative of Clay's actual mannerisms. But he's still a foodie, because of course he is.
Then we get to Peril’s book. Of all the times that Peril talks about Clay, when does she mention any food? Exactly once: when she jokes about Clay sighing because he wants a goat. Literally every other time, she's thinking about his big heart, bravery, and compassion, or all the things Clay wanted other dragons to see when they meet him, rather than his initial internalized monstrosity.
And yes, we all know that Clay likes food. It's the only thing anyone can think about. But that does not define him, and Peril seems to understand that, albeit subconsciously. Through that, I think they can bond even more, and not just because "he can help her". They lift each other up and constantly support one another when no one else is. That, in short, is why they're my favorite Wings of Fire ship.
TLDR: Cleril isn't just a "he can fix her" relationship. Trust me.

I've got a couple messy feelings on Cleril and how the fandom treats it, so here. Take this rant.
TL:DR: Cleril is good you guys. Trust me.
Maybe it's a sign that the brainrot from writing murderers and people who are so far gone from the general norm being able to be soft and sweet is killing the last remaining sense of reason in me, but I don't think Cleril is as bad as people make it out to be.
Yeah, obviously at first glance this should never work. Saying that Peril isn't the most stable character in the series would be a massive understatement. She is constantly characterized as reckless, clingy, emotionally dependent, and always puts herself down as a monstrous dragon only capable of hurting others. Clay has never shown any sort of romantic interest in her, only being passive and sweet with her in a platonic sense. Peril on the other hand loves Clay to the point of obsession. She practically makes him her moral compass. That sort of idealization isn't healthy.
And...you'd be correct. In that state? There isn't too much of a connection there to begin with. If it were to happen right now, I think it would mostly be out of Clay feeling pity towards Peril. He wants her to be happy and is kind of self-sacrificing like that, but, I don't think he could handle being the dragon who she puts all of this pressure on. To be somebody who she centers everything around.
But, Peril isn't really that dragon anymore. It's like people read Escaping Peril, get to the end, and then think: "Oh wow she sure developed. Not enough to be a healthy character!!" as if Escaping Peril didn't end with her burning Darkstalker's scroll and thinking to herself that she didn't mind if Clay wouldn't approve of it. She was acting on her own volition. She knew that burning it was the correct thing to do. She's moved on from treating Clay like this centerpiece in her soul. This dragon who she treats more like an idea of her conscious to keep her on the right track. She's improved. Getting better.
Peril is a character I think is misunderstood by a lot of people, especially ones that aren't really in her position. I don't wanna be an arm-chair psychologist and spout nonsense, but Peril is heavily traumatized and reminds me a lot of people who get out of these horrible situations and are trying to adapt to a new and scary world all on their own.
Peril had an awful childhood. She was raised to be dependent on Scarlet. Scarlet was the only dragon who was keeping her from being thrown off a cliff by an angry mob. She was manipulated and gaslit into believing that what Scarlet did was good. That Scarlet was the only one who cared about her. That these kind of horrible and unhealthy relationships are something she thinks is normal. When Clay comes around, she does the exact same thing. Puts him on a pedestal. The concept of being treated as anything but a monster is completely foreign to her, so she instantly grows attached. She thinks he loves her. Why else would he be so kind? She associates basic compassion with love because that's what she's been raised to believe.
But, she's healing. Throughout Escaping Peril we see her come to terms with her childhood. She understands that she is not a monster, but rather a dragon who was a victim of her circumstances. She is not the same, volatile, unpredictable dragon she was in TDP. People still think of her as that, when she certainly isn't anymore. She's so much better.
Her arc is one about bettering yourself. That, no matter how hurt you were, you deserve to be loved. You deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. You are not a monster. You are capable of love. You are not a heartless being. There are people who care about you. There are people who will stand by your side and help you. There are people who love you.
People never talk about Clay's side of Cleril either. People barely even discuss about Clay for that matter. He's so much of a nothing character in the eyes of the fandom, reduced to little more than Peril's partner who can give big hugs.
But, Clay is like Peril is so many ways. That was one of the many reasons they both got along. Clay and Peril were brought up as unfeeling monsters. Born killers who cannot change their fate. Clay believed in it. That no matter what he tries telling himself, he's a murderer. That at his very core he wants nothing more than to tear out somebody's throat.
But, he learns. He is kind. He is compassionate. He is patient, earnest, sweet, loyal, and above all: loving. He is not a monster. He is more than the labels placed upon him. Only he can define himself through the actions he makes in the present. He is more than the mistakes of his past. He is Clay. He is not Clay the Killer, or Clay the Destroyer, or Clay the Monster. He is Clay.
Him and Peril are alike in so many ways. Clay is the final result of Peril's journey. She's still struggling, but she's making progress. She's developing and changing into somebody better. She's making amends for her mistakes. She's going to be somebody bigger than the labels that were placed on her. She will no longer be Peril, Scarlet's Champion. She will be Peril, known for her fierce loyalty, undying love for her friends, and being the one to burn brightest in the darkest of times.
I believe they can love each other. I believe that Peril can love another dragon and not be extremely clingy or dependent. I believe that Clay and Peril can help each other.
Call be a hopeless romantic or a optimist, but I believe in love. I believe love can help others through their struggles. I believe in people being able to change and grow beyond who they were. Above all, I believe in hope for a brighter future for anybody who has been hurt in the past.

Hello, wings of fire fandom!
I’m sure we’re all aware of those who dislike particular romantic relationships in the series, whether because of an age gap or because the relationship felt like it progressed too quickly, or a variety of other reasons. You yourself may be one of these people.
However, let me enlighten you as to why it ✨doesn’t matter✨
We are humans, reading the books from a human perspective. We think a relationship that goes from strangers to lovers within a few interactions isn’t entirely healthy, productive, or okay in general. But I would like to remind you: they are dragons.
Dragons are not humans. They are an entirely different species to us. They have different hormones, hormonal cycles, ways they interact with others, different relationships, they are completely different to us.
For humans, yes, Glorybringer is problematic because of their age gap. To dragons, that’s completely normal. That’s just life. It literally doesn’t matter at all to them because they are dragons.
And yeah, high school relationships, to humans, are generally stupid and don’t last. We view most of these characters as children or teens, and therefore don’t think their romantic relationships are going to work out. But they. Are. Dragons. It’s a completely different circumstance, because they are not humans, they are a different species to us, I cannot stress this enough.
I think all the wings of fire canonical ships are perfection (i’m ignoring moonbli here), and there’s nothing we can do to improve them because they don’t need improvement. The things that we find problematic do not matter at all, because we are not dragons.
Thank you, I hope I helped you open your eyes a little bit in terms of wof and the ships and why our perspective does not matter because we’re not dragons, have a great day! :]

WoF ship ramblings
Nobody asked but I’m bored!! So here’s all my ship ramblings for Wings of Fire
WORD HEAVY
a quick disclaimer that, no, I do not support ships that put the DoD together, it’s really weird to me personally because their relationship is very adopted sibling esq.
Some kinda hot takes:
I don’t like Sundew x Willow, I think their chemistry is bad. They’re very polar opposites and Sundew feels too hostile when put with Willow’s nature.
Glory x Deathbringer is weird, even if their age was writing mistake due to old plans changing.
ANYWAY onto ships I care about
Winter x Moonwatcher x Qibli
These three are polyamorous, full stop, just a big ol love circle. I like to imagine it all came together in some bundle of conflicted feelings especially with Moon and Qibli.
Qibli and Winter have always been strained but even in canon we know Qibli cared about Winter and the two are close despite a generally strained at first relationship. Moonwatcher is sort of the strong bond between the two of them herself, being a middle-ground of sorts where all three are able to come together regardless a situation.
Kinkajou x Turtle
I like to think Kinkajou manages to work through Anemone’s enchantment and finds her feelings despite the conflict inside herself, I’d imagine Turtle would be there for her all the same as well.
Just the two of them helping one another and Kinkajou overcoming a genuine roadblock of “are these my feelings or is it the enchantment” and realizing that yes, those are her feelings, and Turtle’s help establishes it.
Clay x Peril
biased as a Peril enjoyer but I genuinely do believe they could work, Peril needs to work on herself but I don’t blame her actions due to her very blatant trauma and isolation from much of any real friendships. (The one dragon that initially cared for her was literally murdered.)
Clay was the first dragon she could physically touch without fear, a dragon who showed her kindness (although, its clay, thats just how he is). She views Clay closely and doesn’t know how to really manage herself and her thoughts, but she’s learning, and she wants to be better and be able to manage herself without fear.
Blaze x Glacier
I don’t have much to say for these girlies I just think they’re cute and Blaze is one if my favorite characters oopsies
I do think Glacier would kill for Blaze
OTHER HCS/Ships I like but don’t have much thought for
AroAce Glory
Starflight x Fatespeaker
Anemone x Tamarin
Snowfall x Lynx

I do not like Clay x Peril, for many reasons. One, I generally just don't like how Peril behaves towards Clay, as I find it a bit creepy. Two, Clay really doesn't seem like one to have a partner at all. He cares deeply for his friends, and I have a feeling he sees Peril as a friend as well, nothing more.
I honestly prefer Peril x Turtle a LOT more. I think their opposite personalities compliment each other well. Also, Clay x Peril only had a few small moments in the books, while Peril x Turtle basically had a whole book's worth of chemistry.
Peril x Turtle stans rise
