god i love taxonomy. especially the broader groups like phyla because it results in:
this
and this
being in the same group

Fat Echidna found on Woppa (they do inhabit the island as well as the mainland).
Sadly, while driving to Yeppoon, we saw a lot of dead echidnas on the road... The highway is frequently covered in native animal roadkill. At least on Woppa, there's little chance of an echidna being runover.
BTW, despite looking like hedgehogs, they're very much unrelated. Echidnas are their own thing (closely related to the platypus).

All set! Next week, I'm a koala care volunteer! As much as I'm here to help them (and cute as they are), I'm mostly going to improve my ecology skills as well as have something impressive on my resumé. So I'm actually excited to work in the food nursery and not with direct koala care. That's what I wanted in the first place! It's still helping the fluffy fellas after all. There were only a few photo I could take for legal reasons, but here they are!;
The souvenirs shop;
The only Koalas I could take photos of are the ones with hip dysplasia. The carer offered to let me in, but I didn't want to disturb them.
And finally:

Pikaia lived 513-505 million years ago and was one of the earliest chordates, a diverse clade of animals consisting of all vertebrates, though not just vertebrates. This strange animal likely swam through the Cambrian seas like an eel. It had a small head with a pair of antenna-like tentacles. It had a small jawless mouth it could use to swallow particles of food whole.
