What do you think about bluntnose sixgill sharks
Tumblr media
Hexanchus griseus or the Bluntnose Sixgill Shark or the Cow Shark
These guys just scream "friend" and I want to pet it (granted, I'd want to pet any shark). Most shark species have only five gill slits, but this species is one of the rare exceptions (hence the name). We don't know for sure why it has six slits instead of five. One of the leading theories is that since the species is so old, it first arose when gills were less efficient, so more were needed and that trait was just never lost.

Okay not a fish really but look at this guy. They're a bluntnose sixgill shark, commonly known as the cow shark- scientific name hexanchus griseus, their diet mostly consists of bony fish, and their habitat can be about as deep as 2,500 meters, which is 8,202 feet!

since they aren't fish i can't give them a rating legally but as far as sharks go i like these ones. would give a hug if asked

Many sharks can lay still and live. This is accomplished via a process called buccal pumping, in which the shark draws water into its oral cavity, and expels it out of their gills; thus oxygenating their blood through their gills. No data, presently, observes this behavior in the bluntnose sixgill shark, Hexanchus griseus, (pictured in this GIF in Puget Sound), and yet we see this shark voluntarily stop swimming and lay still before a diver in the source video. This is not only astonishing, but heartwarming. If this shark is an obligate-ram-ventilator, then this is a risk, but if it can buccal pump, then this is an action of rest. This (an H. griseus resting on the sea floor) has also been observed in a separate video.
While peer-reviewed research, presently, cannot determine why these sharks rest on the sea floor, I hypothesize that H. griseus is capable of buccal pumping, and therefor resting without traversing the water column. It is very cute, and these sharks look very dopey and pettable, I concur. There is even footage of one being pet without protest (reminder that a shark is perfectly adapted to their aquatic habitat, and if so choosing, could escape a human's touch in an instant if they did not will it so). Much has yet to be answered of Hexanchus griseus, as a species, and I intend to dedicate my career to answering those questions; if fate and funds allows it.
No bcs I read the whole thing and it’s so wholesome I want to be a shark now. THANK YOU SM FOR THE INFORMATION EVEN IF IM NOT REALLY GOOD AT ENGLISH I UNDERSTOOD A LOT 😋😋 @1-800-simping @luveuly look please it’s so cute

A different post from my recent ones. I haven’t uploaded science illustration work in quite a while. But here it is.
Last year, I had had to create colour illustrations of Deep Sea Fauna, including a group of really cool beasts and a couple of environments for a science exhibit called Luminar. I am still preparing the images from that project to include in Behance, but here is a mashup from those illustrations. Dive in and tell me if you like it!
