“Drawing in the dirt! Drawing in the dirt! I’m drawing in the dirt!” Little Juniper sang as she drew in the dirt with a stick she found. “Draw up! Draw down. Draw in the dirt all around!”
From flowers to butterflies to fish to trees to imaginary things; Juniper drew them all. A little budding artist could work with any medium after all! And her absolute favorite was dirt.
“June!” A voice called to her.
Popping her head up, Juniper saw her MaPa wave to her.
“MaPop!” Little Juniper cried out in delight. “Look look! I made things!”
MaPa walked over as Juniper pointed with enthusiasm. Her chubby arm was waving all around as she pointed to her grand canvas. As MaPa got closer, a smile grew on their face.
“Oh how lovely! My Little Junebug your drawings are wonderful.” They said, squatting down to the young child.
“Yeah!” Juniper grinned.
MaPa chuckled.
“Is Mama coming? I wan’ her to see!” Juniper spoke fast, mouth fumbling with the word ‘want.’
MaPa glanced up, a mischievous smile taking place. “Why don’t you go ask her?” They pointed out to a tree.
Juniper squinted. The light of the day shining in her eyes. The creak bubbling by occasionally made the shine brighter. It was hard for Juniper to see exactly where MaPa was pointing to. So Juniper looked around the tree.
Was Mama over by the bench where Kyle was sitting with his Auntie in his wheelchair? No. Mama definitely wasn’t running with the joggers with their cool metal legs. Mama hates to run. Mama wasn’t with the bird watchers who come every Tuesday. Mama goes with the bird watchers that come every Thursday.
Juniper blinked hard and tried to look at the tree again. There! Mama’s pretty yellow and green dress was blowing in the wind!
“Mama!” Juniper cried with joy as she jumped up. Carful to go around her art, she ran right to her Mama.
She slammed right into her Mama, hugging her legs with every bit of strength she had.
“Oh my little Juniper. Did you miss me?” Mama’s soothing voice asked her.
“A little bit.” Juniper said. She’s a big girl, and while she doesn’t need to be with her Mama all the time, she still loves her Mama and misses her.
Mama laughed her soft laugh that Juniper loved and ruffled Juniper’s already ruffled hair. Oh! Mama pulled out a stick!
“How did that get there?” Mama asked.
Juniper just made a noise sounding like a ‘I don’t know.’
Juniper finally looked up, but then froze. Wide eyed.
Tears burst from her eyes as Juniper started to sob.
“June!” Mama shifted her to be held in Mama’s arms. “June baby what’s wrong?”
MaPa came over with worry on their face. “Baby what’s wrong?” They asked.
Juniper pointed to the direction of Mama’s face. “Ma-Ma-ma sh-she-“ Juniper hiccuped, “she don’ have her bear no more!”
As she cried her parents blinked before understanding.
“Oh honey,” Mama cooed. “I just wanted to have a little change, that’s all.”
“That’s right our Little June bug, Mama looks quite dapper.” MaPa said, rubbing Juniper’s back.
Juniper momentarily stopped crying. “What’s dapper?” She asked.
Her parents smiled with amusement in their eyes. “It means fancy love.” Mama said.
Her saying that caused Juniper to look at her again. She then promptly burst into tears once more.
Mama and MaPa began shushing her in their ‘I’m here it’s okay’ way as they swayed together back and forth back and forth back and forth the way Juniper liked it.
But Juniper wasn’t happy. No Juniper was sad and some other things she didn’t know. Instead of the fluffy beard Mama had, she got a mustache instead! It wasn’t the same! And because the fluffy beard was gone and it wasn’t the same Juniper didn’t like it.
So Juniper said “I want Mama’s bear back.”
“Aww baby, Mama can grow her beard back.” Mama said.
“Really?” Juniper asked, rubbing her eye.
“Really.” MaPa said. “Hair likes to grow you know.”
Little Juniper pouted, but nodded. Okay, Mama can grow her beard back. “Okay! You can grow it back now!”
“Juniper, sweetheart, it takes a while.” Mama said.
“… tomorrow?” Juniper asked shyly.
“Longer than tomorrow sweet pea.” MaPa said.
Tiny lips wobbled as crystal clear tears started to well up in Juniper’s eyes. Mama shifted Juniper in her arms. Now the child was on Mama’s hip.
“I’m sorry for not letting you know that I was going to shave today. I wanted it to be a surprise.” Mama apologized.
The small nose sniffled. “A surprise?”
Mama nodded with a hum. “I thought you would like it.”
Juniper pouted as she shook her head. She didn’t like it one bit.
MaPa hummed. “Well, your Mama wanted to do something different for herself as well. Don’t you want Mama to do something that she likes?”
Juniper thought for a moment. Then nodded. She wanted her Mama to be happy. What she didn’t notice was her parents doing the face communication on what should be told to a child. They stopped when Juniper looked back up at them.
“I don’t like it… but I want Mama to be happy.” Juniper said solemnly.
Mama kissed Juniper on her forehead, the mustache tickling in a way that the beard had done before.
“How about this,” Mama started, “next time I decide to change my style, from a beard to a mustache or even nothing at all, I’ll let you know first. No surprises.”
Juniper liked this more. But then she scrunched up her nose. “Mama not having a bear on her face? Or a catipiler? Tha’s weird. Your face is naked if you do.”
Both Mama and MaPa blinked at that then laughed. “I suppose not having a bear or a caterpillar on my face would be weird.”
Juniper nodded rather seriously. Mama was prettier with her beard. But maybe Juniper would think Mama would look just as pretty with the mustache. After all, it takes time to adjust to change.
“Come on now darling, you need a bath. One with water. I don’t think your dirt bath did anything.” MaPa said.
That caused Juniper to gasp. That’s right! Dirt!
“Mama! Mama! I gotta show you my art!”
Together the family of three went to the drawings. They ooed and awed at what Juniper created. Later they would go home just the other side of the park. They would go have baths and have dinner at the community room in their apartment building. And later on in the night they would wake little Juniper up to let her see the summer night stars during the designated black out. And in the morning Juniper would hug her mother and say “I think your catipiller need to be brushed.”
———
So some notes on this is that this was created for @solarpunkaestheticweek for the aesthetic week. While I did plan on trying to draw a picture once a day, I figure writing a short story would be good enough. And I couldn’t get this idea out of my head. Juniper and this story is actually based off of a couple of things that happened to me when I was a little girl. My mom suddenly came home having chopped off her long hair to be super short and had it dyed! And toddler me did not like it one bit because it was different! I cried like how Juniper cried. The other inspiration was the opposite of Juniper. I liked it whenever my dad was clean shaven and hated it when he grew out his stubble. As for Juniper’s parents, her MaPa is non-binary and when Juniper started calling MaPa, MaPa it just stuck. As for Juniper’s Mama, you the reader can interpret her as trans, intersex, a cisgender woman who just happens to have facial hair, or anything else. I hope you’ve enjoyed the story!

"the magic just goes away when you grow up" is incredibly boring to me tbh. (Or replace "magic" with "the basic ability to interact with the central worldbuilding premise/to be any kind of Protagonist according how this setting works", kind of thing)
Like I 'unno. Maybe I'm coming from the perspective of someone who's 2-4 times the age of the average magical girl protagonist, and maybe it's just because I don't think there's anything aspirational or inherently good about "normalcy", or about bullshit "yeah but consider: The Real World" gotchas. But the idea that interesting things should effectively end when you've completed your life's tutorial phase is just plain wrong.
The objectively worst version of this is stories which begin after you've grown up and it's like "you were magical/a protagonist/whatever as a child, but now you're Grown Up In Your 20-30's and now you Just Have To Deal With Being Normal". Like, yes there's space for "life after adventuring" stories -- there's space for most kinds of story, after all, and I'll certainly forgive it if there's a "twist" that circumstances arise in which they have to take up their old mantle again -- but having the whole thing focus on "it's boring" ain't it, chief.
But a thing that rubs me the wrong way in particular is when it's a hard in-universe limit -- when you have a time limit on how long you can be a hero, and that limit is When You're Grown Up, and if you start out older, you literally have less time to be a hero than someone who started out younger. Fuck off.

I haven’t had time to work on the next Hamster chapter yet so heres the last few paragraphs from Rats Race…
CWs/ Pet whump, child character, blackmail, threat of jail to a minority, uhhhmhh spoilers? (Not that I care)
“You have something I want.” A small voice appeared beside him, and August jumped out of his skin. It was Mouse, she was sitting in the passenger seat with a deadpan expression on her puffy tear soaked face.
August was holding his chest, and snapped at her, “Fucking Christ, Kid, is your whole family just terrifying?! Get out of my car!” He gripped the wheels and frowned at her.
Mouse glared right back, the same glare that Ratty wore, “No.” she said as matter of fact, “You still have Clarence, and I want them back.”
“I can’t do that kid. M’sorry, they’re safe at the shelter. Best I can do is send them a message from you.” He wiped his face, exhaustion seeping off of him.
“I’ll tell Mum.” She took in a big breathe of air, “And I’ll scream. I’ll tell Mum about the shelter. I’ll tell Mum its your fault Ratty is a pet now. I’ll tell Mum that you have Clarence. And you’ll go to jail. I want Clarence back right now.”

"So I heard you talked to Alex during dinner tonight," Dr. Foster smiled patiently at Lucas, who tried his best not to frown and sulk at the questioning. When dinner had ended, Lucas thought for sure he would just be able to slip into his room and start planning with Æthane how to deal with the possible vent-lurker. But mere minutes after he settled down, Dr. Foster came tiptoeing in with her patient smile and gentle demeanor for more questions.
"Yeah," Lucas replied, ignoring the snort from Æthane at the same one-word response he gave last time.
"Did you two get along, ok?" Dr. Foster pressed on.
"I guess."
"What did you talk about?"
Ah, here it is. She wants to talk to Lucas about the whole 'there's a monster in the vents' incident.
"They said I was adorable." Lucas dodged the subject.
Dr. Foster smiled warmly at Lucas, "They aren't wrong. You are a very cute kid."
Lucas ducked his head down as his face flushed, Dr. Foster laughing fondly.
"But, did you talk about anything else?"
Lucas looked back at Dr. Foster and frowned. He guessed there was no getting out of this, "They said there's a monster in the vents."
Dr. Foster hummed and nodded.
"Lucas, I know you've been through a lot," Dr. Foster began, "And that you might be very concerned with everything changing so fast around you. But I just want to know that you are safe here. No monsters or bad people are coming to hurt you. You don't have to be scared. Trust me, we've made extra sure this place is monster-proof." Dr. Foster ended with her same reassuring smile.
"I'm not scared," Lucas said, surprised to find they were only half lying.
"That's very good, now..." Dr. Foster stood and slowly approached the bed Lucas, slinking backward as she delicately grabbed a small wire with a button attached to the headboard.
"This button is what we like to call the 'Help Button,'" she said as she showed it to Lucas. "When you press it, we'll be alerted that you need help for whatever reason, and a nurse will come to you right away. So use this button anytime and for any reason. We'd rather you call us for something small than not call us for something important. So whenever you need us for any reason, just press, and we'll come running."
"What if it's because there's a monster?" Lucas asked, side-eying the woman.
"Then we especially want you to press it so we can help you. But don't worry, there are no monsters here," she assured Lucas.
Lucas just nodded, and Dr. Foster smiled reassuringly at him.
"Your first session will be with me tomorrow, so for now, get some sleep, ok?"
"Ok," Lucas said as he flopped down under the covers and turned over, not even waiting for her to leave the room. He feels her hesitate for a moment, watching him, before quietly exiting the room, a soft click of the lock bouncing off the empty walls.
Lucas didn't move. He couldn't. The moonlight streaming in from the bared window cast harsh shadows where Lucas knew better than to assume nothing was lurking. He gripped his blanket tighter as he eyed the vent.
"What should we do?" Lucas finally whispered into the small gap between his face and the wall.
"You should get some sleep." Æthane's voice washed over his mind.
"But-"
"I have it covered. The thing in the vents is on the total other side of the complex and seems preoccupied. It's unlikely to come by here tonight, but I'm going to periodically check while you sleep."
"Can I really not do anything?" Lucas whispered as he curled in on himself.
"You're scared," Æthane stated. Lucas nodded.
"I understand. You've always been alone, no, worse than that, alone and powerless. But you aren't anymore. You have me with you, and I can protect us. But to do that, I need you at the top of your game. That means I need you to eat well and get a lot of sleep."
"Ok..." Lucas agreed, even as their reluctance to do so plainly colored their voice. Anxiety quietly tightened in his chest like a coil around his heart as he couldn't help but listen to every sound, still on alert despite themselves.
His grip on his blanket tightened even further as he curled into himself, desperately trying to calm the tides of fear and dread. But then it settled, all his worries swept away by a wall of fatigue crashing down upon him much heavier than the anxiety from before. So he allowed himself to be swept away in the gentle current as his awareness faded.
----------------------------------------------------
Lucas woke up sobbing. Tears streamed down his chubby cheeks as he clumsily kicked off his blanket. The night outside of Lucas' room was ordinary, the city thrumming with life even long after the sun had set. The flickering lamp post tingeing the moonlight yellow as it streamed through Lucas' cracked window.
Lucas continued to cry, unbothered by the humming of cars, as his light green eyes stared fearfully up at the creature perched on his crib. The pale creature smiled down at him, its grin wide and toothless, nearly splitting its elongated head in half. Its eyes were like pitch-black wells, sunken and lifeless, only a pinprick of light shining from their unknowable depths.
It cooed down at Lucas with a haunting voice. Lucas continued to thrash his stubby limbs as he reached for the bars of his cradle, desperate to escape.
"Hush baby," it soothed, its thin lips cracking as it spoke. "Come here."
Slowly and carefully, the creature lowered its pitch-black tendrils down into the cradle. Lucas screamed in terror as the only appendages brushed against his skin, slowly beginning to wrap around him.
The door burst open, blinding Lucas for a few moments as he brought his tiny hands up to shield his eyes from the bright yellow hall light.
"Get the fuck away from my baby, you freak!" his mother roared, brandishing a baseball bat.
The creature above him hissed with rage, countless rows of sharp teeth appearing as its mouth ripped its head apart. Tendrils pierced the bedding and shattered the wood around him as the creature launched itself at his mother. Cold terror flooded Lucas' body as his world devolved into rage and destruction. He screwed his eyes shut and continued to scream for his mother.
Suddenly, appendages wrapped around him, dragging him forward as he continued to scream. He brought his arms in front of him and desperately shoved at the unknowable wall in front of him.
His breathing grew hysterical as he beat his fists against the thing, and his tears streamed down his face as it refused to budge. It dragged Lucas even closer, pressing him against whatever was in front of him as he trembled.
Lucas wasn't sure how long it took for him to realize his cries were no longer that of a baby's. That his body was larger, his arms longer, and his fingers thinner.
That he was himself again.
His panicked screams transitioned into hiccuping sobs as he stopped struggling against what he now realized weren't oily tentacles, but strong arms. The arms embraced him, tight enough to stop his struggling but gentle enough not to harm him. They held him tenderly to their chest as their owner continued to soothe him.
Lucas bit back his tears as he looked up with watery eyes at the person embracing him, his weary green eyes meeting a pair of equally weary crimson ones.
"Relax, kid," Æthane spoke softly, "it's just a memory. It can't hurt you anymore."
Lucas' lip wobbled as he wormed himself impossibly closer into Æthane's embrace, desperate for comfort that had been unknown to him for such an impossibly long time. Tears leaked down his face and absorbed into the Æthane's shirt as the monster stroked his back and cooed at him.
Lucas wasn't sure how he would ever get back to sleep. Every nerve in his body electrified as he shook, and yet, exhaustion hit him like a wave, dragging him under the surface of the water and laying him flat against the seabed. His eyes slid shut as he felt himself go limp, unable to manage the strength to move or support himself any longer.
"Just sleep, kid," Æthane nuzzled the top of his head, his voice so soft and comforting that Lucas felt himself getting lost in it as everything began to fade around him, sinking deeper and deeper beneath the waves until there was nothing left.
----------------------------------
Lucas felt the warmth of the sun on his face as everything faded back into his awareness, his eyelids a warm red as he brought his hands up to rub them. He slowly cracked them open to find himself back in his plain white room in the mental hospital, the only thing out of place being Æthane sitting on the end of his bed.
"How're you feeling?" he asked, looking down at Lucas in the way adults did when they were trying to seem casual but were actually testing Lucas, trying to see if he would say the right thing.
"I'm ok," Lucas mumbled as he looked away. Æthane hummed, letting Lucas know he didn't believe him. Lucas flinched.
"It's ok if you're not ok. You know that, right?" Æthane asked before laughing at himself. "Of course, you don't know that, considering what your mom was like before she died."
Lucas didn't hear the creak of the bed, but he did hear the sound of Æthane's feet hitting the ground. It was strange, he knew logically Æthane wasn't really there, so his feet shouldn't make any noise, and he heard it as Æthane projected his image into Lucas' consciousness.
Æthane's face came into view as he knelt down in front of Lucas as he lay on his side. Lucas buried his face more into his pillow in an attempt to avoid the monster's gaze.
"Lucas, could you look at me, please?" Æthane asked, and Lucas buried his face into the pillow more. "I'm not upset or anything. Well, I am a bit upset in general, but not at you. I just want you to see me so you can believe me when I tell you that."
Lucas kept his head buried for a moment more before peeking with his eye, most of his face still buried in the pillow.
"Lucas," Æthane started, "It's ok if you aren't ok. Honestly, if you were ok after everything that's been going on, I'd be more than a little surprised. I just need you to know you can talk to me about anything, alright? I promise I'll never hurt you. I just need you to talk to me about stuff. We're in this together, remember?" Æthane gave him a small yet earnest smile as he tentatively began to stroke Lucas' hair.
Lucas hummed as he kept looking at Æthane. He seemed genuine, and Lucas felt himself melt into the affection Æthane was providing.
"Ok," Lucas mumbled.
Æthane smiled, "Good. Now, how are you feeling?"
"Bad."
"That's understandable considering the dream you had last night," Æthane reassured him.
Lucas curled in on himself slightly at the memory, "Was that real?"
"No, it was just a memory from when you were a baby," Æthane replied.
"No," Lucas shook his head as he unburied his face in order to properly look at Æthane, "the other part. When I was with you."
"Ah," Æthane slightly nodded, "that was a bit real but also wasn't. Remember the first time we met? When we went into that weird gray place that I told you was your own mind?"
"Yeah."
"I dragged you out of your dream and back into there."
"Oh…" Lucas averted his gaze, "thanks."
"It's no problem," Æthane replied, "you looked like you needed the help."
Lucas nodded as he closed his eyes, focusing on the feeling of Æthane stroking his hair. It wasn't real. He knew that. But it felt real, and that was all that mattered.
He wasn't alone anymore, and that was all that mattered.
"Breakfast is in ten minutes," Æthane hummed, "So it's time to get out of bed and change from your pure white pajamas into your pure white kinda pajamas."
Lucas scowled with his eyes closed, and Æthane laughed.
"God, even when you're mad, you're adorable, kid. I mean, seriously, it should be illegal for any creature to be as cute as human children."
Lucas grumbled as he sat up, Æthane's hand leaving his head, "Do monsters not have kids?"
"Oh, we do. They're just ugly as sin. Makes me glad I can't have any." Æthane chuckled.
"Well, we're stuck together now, so I guess you're kinda my parent now anyway." Lucas huffed as his feet hit the ground, waddling over to the closet as Æthane watched him go by.
"Does that mean you're going to start calling me your dad now?" Æthane piped up, his eyes glinting mischievously.
Lucas was really glad nobody else could hear Æthane as the monster roared with laughter at the dirty look Lucas sent him over his shoulder. It took by the time Lucas got done getting changed into his near-identical day clothes for the monster to wipe the last tears from his eyes.
"You're not my dad," Lucas pouted as he straightened out his white shirt.
"Awwww, why's that, sonny?" Æthane smirked as he squatted down to Lucas' level, the child ignoring him as he headed for the door. "Don't like the idea of having a big ol' monster daddy?"
"You aren't my dad because you're actually trying to help me," Lucas spat as he grabbed the doorknob. "Dads, don't do that."
Lucas left the room to head for the cafeteria, leaving Æthane in stunned silence as he left.

The Djinn (2021)
Tumblr media
A mute boy is trapped in his apartment with a sinister monster when he makes a wish to fulfill his heart's greatest desire.
where to watch: Shudder
rating: 2/10
This is one of those movies that would have been better served being a short film. It had an excellent premise and a lot of potential, but the runtime made it seem repetitive and stale.
The actor playing the main kid did really well. Some of the bits were delightfully clever, but they lose their punch on the third or fourth pass.
I’d say watch it if you’re looking for a low consequence/low stakes movie, but otherwise it’s just kinda….meh.

Darisa - The Talk
Tortured Prince AU Masterlist - TR3 Masterlist
640 words | Original Work: Tortured Prince (AU of TR3), 9 years after the events of Baltar's trauma. Darisa's old enough to cause trouble Content | no warnings! child protagonist. little mink Princess Darisa backs her uncle King Hakon into giving her a prelude to the sex talk; heavily veiled reference to sexual trauma
Darisa quietly turned the handle to the king's study, peeking her head through the door. The king's pen raised hovered slightly above the desk as he looked up at her.
"Good morning, Darisa," Uncle Hakon greeted.
She furtively hurried into the room, shutting the door softly behind her. Slinking along the perimeter of the room, she checked behind the tapestry before getting to the window. Wood creaked as Uncle Hakon twisted to watch her. Darisa leaned out, closing the shutters, then pulled the curtains tight.
"And what are you up to?" the king wondered.
Confident that the room was secure, Darisa scurried back to the front of the desk, pulling up one of the chairs and clambering onto it so as to kneel on it and be at eye level with her uncle.
"Uncle Hakon," she said in low tones, placing her hands flat on the desk. "I come to you seeking elusive information."
Her uncle laughed, docking his pen and folding his hands. "Alright, Bug," he said. "What's your question?"
She leaned in close, conspiratorially. "What's... sex?"
Blinking in surprise, expression becoming more reserved, Uncle Hakon leaned back. "That's uh, you're too young to be talking about that."
Ugh, not him too! So it wasn't a secret, only an adult secret. Why were they so weird about words sometimes? Darisa scowled. Clearly, it was time to stop playing around, or she would never get answers around here.
"Okay," she said innocently, hopping off the chair. "I'll go ask Aunty Rohisa."
Uncle Hakon lurched forward in his seat. "Wait!"
Darisa stopped, smug, and waited for him to continue.
Eyeing her, he sighed in exasperation as he shook a finger at her. "That won't work every time."
Biting her lower lip to try and keep from grinning, Darisa nodded. "Mmhmm."
"Sit down," he said, rubbing his forehead. "Let me think."
Darisa settled into the chair again and watched him, kicking her feet.
The king whetted a lip. "Well," he started slowly. "It's something very private." He paused. "Where did you hear about it?"
"Hobar was making fun of us for not knowing what it was," she said, rolling her eyes. She bet he didn't know what it was, either.
"Hobar is the one that likes picking on Todaro, right?" Uncle Hakon asked, and Darisa nodded. "I see." He tapped his fingers on the desk a few times, then sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Sex is what makes babies."
Darisa frowned, deflating. "Oh." Who cared about babies? "That's all?"
"Sort of," he said. "For... most people, it's very fun to do, whether or not they get a baby because of it."
That piqued her attention. It wasn't just a thing, but an act, and a fun one at that! "How do you do it?"
Uncle Hakon blew out a breath. "You'll have to ask your mother or aunts about specifics. Definitely not your papa though, okay?"
Darisa cocked her head. "Why not papa?"
He hesitated and glanced away. "It's better for girls to talk to girls about it."
Squinting at him, Darisa tried to tell if he was lying. Papa was something else adults tended to get weird about, and Uncle Hakon was no exception. But even if he was lying, she probably wouldn't be able to wrestle the whole truth from him.
She relented. "So I should talk to Aunty Rohisa after all?"
Uncle Hakon looked like he'd bit into something a little sour. "Aunty Rohisa can sometimes give a few too many details. Your mother might like it if you asked her first."
"Hmm." She considered the information gathered here, then nodded and hopped down. "Okay. Thanks, Uncle Hakon!"
"Of course," he said. "Now shoo, little bug. Love you."
"Love you!" she answered as she darted from the room, already on the hunt for her next victim.

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
Tumblr media
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt was a fairly short read, but a beautiful one. It is a children's book with a ten-year-old female protagonist who encounters questions that we don't often pose to children, like "What would immortality really be like?"
It's fun to imagine the best things that could come from superhuman abilities, but sometimes it's more intriguing to take the best bits of such abilities and weigh them with the worst. In the case of Tuck Everlasting, immortality is the examined superhuman ability. On the one hand, there's Jesse, who wants to truly live his immortal life, to enjoy every second of his long, long time among the living. On the other, there's Angus, who wishes he could be back into the natural circle of life and death.
One thing that is crucial to realize is that it's important to have both of these sides because, like for every such dilemma, there are more sides to consider than just the one. I love the way Natalie Babbitt presented these different perspectives on immortality, and I would love to see more such dilemmas presented that way.

Immortal Boy gets suspended
Kevin had to toss his previous hero suit away in a dumpster a few days ago after it got covered in blood. Now he sits in class doting off trying to figure out a new costume to wear so he can go back to being a hero again. Luckily it's going to be Halloween soon so he can grab a costume to wear but he also promised his friend Michael that they would match for Halloween. This is gonna be the last Halloween he'll have in grade school before moving up to 5th grade and having to worry about what High School he will go to.
The bell rings for lunch time which is gonna be the perfect time to talk about costume ideas with Michael. The lunch was the mystery meat beef that all the other kids hated but it never bothered Kevin so the kids who refused to eat it just gave it all to him. It surprises the kids how Kevin is a vacuum but never seems to gain weight at all. When everyone was done giving their lunch to Kevin, it was now time for him and Michael to talk Costume ideas.
"Listen Michael, This is our last year before we enter middle school." Kevin says as he begins eating the beef. Michael is more of a cartoon enjoyer and doesn't read comics but if there is one thing that can connect these it's
"Spiderman, Spiderman is the costume we'll go with, but we won't be like other kids who dress as him." Michael leans closer with a big grin as if the next thing he'll say will blow Kevin's mind. "We'll have actual web shooters!"
Kevin was in a deep shock so deep that he didn't even correct Michael about Hyphen in Spider-Man. He didn't think it would be possible to swing around the city before. He began thinking about how cool it would be to web up bad guys, crawl on walls, and be the real life Spider-Man.
"YOU FOR REAL!" Kevin shouts in excitement as Michael nods.
"I saw it on Tv. It was so cool and only 40$ it says" That was basically a steal Kevin thinks.
Kevin is so excited he began shaking the cafeteria table to the annoyance of the other kids sitting. To the corner of Kevin's eyes he sees his arch nemesis, Eduardo and his goons, Jack and his little brother. They share the same lunch as them. Kevin never liked these kids as they acted like Flash Thompson if he never grew as a character. Just a bunch of assholes that pick on people. Kevin looks away from them and focuses back on the costumes but then Eduardo had to open his mouth.
"What are those clothes you're wearing? You really are still watching baby shows." Eduardo says to Michael poking fun at his Tom & Jerry shirt. This annoyed Kevin but Michael doesn't take it lying down.
"You can't be making fun of anything with those off brand shoes. Looks like you dug them out the trash with how it looks as if it's breaking down already." This isn't much of an insult in fact Kevin thinks it was a pretty lame one but it doesn't take much to get under Eduardo's skin and he walks away angrily to his table.
As Kevin finishes eating all the beef the bell rings meaning it's now time for recess. Recess is what Kevin looks forward to every day as he keeps his throne as the greatest tag player of all time. As he they all huddle up to the door in the cafeteria that leads them to the school's parking lot, Kevin groups up with all his friends to start the game of Tag.
"Since Kevin won last game he gets to pick who's It again." Kevin's short friend Mark said.
"Well I guess I'll pick myself." Kevin Walks towards the wall and begins counting to ten as everyone begins to spread apart. Kevin gives them an extra 10 seconds before going out to tag them. He begins the game running towards the slide first so he can get a good view to spot anyone. As he stands on top of the slide he sees Michael but he also sees Eduardo and his goons walk towards him starting a fight. He watches as Eduardo and Jack toss Michael to the ground and Eduardo's little brother attempts to kick Michael in the nuts.
Kevin's heart begins to race seeing his friend in danger and quickly goes down the slide running at Eduardo and tackling him. Kevin rolls on the asphalt ground feeling the skin on his forearm get rubbed off but he quickly gets up without a scratch while Eduardo can't say the same. As he ended up getting an abrasion on his forearm and knee. Some of his skin was hanging on by a thread with his skin's inner layer showing and slight blood leaking. At that moment when Kevin was just watching since this is the first ever fight he has been in now and he was worried for Michael.
Michael was able to get back up and throw Eduardo's little brother to the ground. Kevin wasn't paying any attention to his surroundings and got caught off guard by Jack who punched him in the face right before the teachers and security guard intervened. After the teacher came and grabbed them escorting them inside Kevin was getting filled with rage not thinking it should just end like this. He looks towards Jack who was being escorted inside and wants to get revenge for the punch..
"You fucking ASSHOLE!" Kevin yells as he runs towards Jack only to be stopped by the security guard who grabs him. Yet Kevin continues to try and push through and since the security guard kept a loose hold on him he was able to forcefully push himself through losing balance and falling down. On the ground he gets up and again runs towards Jack who the teacher now has behind him blocking Kevin from reaching Jack and then the security guard picks him up.
Kevin continues to try and fight it but is brought inside to sit in the principal's office as they call his dad to pick him up for his aggressive outburst. Kevin sit's there in his own anger towards Eduardo and his goons. Kevin just sits there angrily as he waits for his dad to pick him up. When his dad arrived the principal tells him that Kevin been suspended for 2 days. As they get to the car Kevin expected his dad to be angry at him.
"Kevin why were you so angry." he asked calmly so Kevin wouldn't be scared to respond. Kevin stays silent looking down before mumbling.
"They attacked my friend"
"And then you fought them to defend him?" His dad says and Kevin nods in response. "That's good. Always defend your friends. I'll never be angry about that." Kevin's dad turns to him and Kevin goes and keeps eye contact.
"The only problem was that you wanted to continue the fight. When Spider-Man villains are arrested he doesn't try to beat them up while they're in cuffs." Kevin nods again, pleasing his dad who turns back to the road. "For defending your friend, how about I get you a gift."
"Well... There's this web shooter that my friend told me about." Kevin says as he smiles as now he can get his Spider-Man costume. Plus he gets 2 days of no school which means he get's more time to be a hero.

Can you please help me find this manhwa?
There's a manhwa (I'm 90% sure it's Korean) that is about a girl living in a smallish temple with a mute (?) priestess the only one who cares about her.
The greedy high priest that hits them whenever he wants realizes that our protagonist has healing powers in her blood so he keeps her captive in a room and invites wealthy people with health issues to come and get treated.
She grows up being bled and miserable and when she dies she finds she has regressed to before her power was found out.
She sends a letter to a Duke who was the only one who tried to free her, saying that she can heal him.
She blindfolds him so he can't see she used her blood and he adopts her.
She also stays with his mother for a time and gives more time to her elderly dog. The mother is cold at first but quickly thaws and comes to like her very much.
Please help me if you know the title 😭

"What July Knew" by Emily Koch - #BookReview @PenguinRandomCA @VintageBooks @EmilyKoch #WhatJulyKnew
To celebrate the fact that this novel has been selected as November’s Book of the Month in Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada – I am re-posting my review of this book. July Hooper is ten years old. She lives with her father, stepmother, and stepsister. Though she and her stepsister are only ten months apart in age, Sylvie is much more polished that July. She is more popular at school, and she gets…

August 15, 2023:
This author took "character voice," turned it up all the way to 11, and snapped off the dial, and I think it's this book's best (& most prominent) feature. Wondering "what is this kid even saying" is kind of the point and I love it for that. It's disorienting, and depressing, and made me immediately get up and wash my sinkful dishes. There's a kind of curious peace about it, the way only a child can accept even the darkest developments, but it's also deeply unsettling for the reader.
I'm really not sure about the ending. I don't know why what happened, happened. Maybe that's also part of the point.
8/10
#WhatsKenyaReading I picked this up pretty much just because of the aesthetic of the cover. I wanted to read Whalefall (same author) but all the copies at the library are checked out for now, so I decided to get a feel for this author while I wait. Even more excited to read Whalefall now!

Angry spitfire teenage protagonist fighting furiously against an adult villain who is viscerally uncomfortable with the fact that they're fighting a kid.
Puts 'em off villainy for good, and they go full "parent mode". The kid makes a speech about friendship and determination and the villain is like. "Y'know what, that's really ... you got a point there, kiddo. Maybe friendship is great. Who did you say put you up to this? ... Oh, you ... decided on your own. That's ... great."
Or a more subtle version, where it looks at first glance like the villain is Moved And Persuaded by the kid's speech, but if you pay close attention to the villain's body language, you'll realize what's really going on.

50%. Would your character rather create something or destroy something?
From this ask game
Ratty would love to smash anything tbh they’re pretty destructive when they’re allowed to be. They live for blowing up BBU buildings and Evil science labs (Once they’re cleared out of course) and lovvvvveeeee smashing in peoples faces when its well deserved 😊
August is fix fix fix fix fix. He loves working with his hands and would definitely prefer creating over destroying anything. He might drabble in doing tattoos, and of course he fixes people up at his job. He would also like to learn some guitar but probably isnt a professional by far.
Clarence is learning how to sew!!! :))) My sweet baby, they’re so talented they even know how to read a little bit. They love arts and crafts, and building blocks, and all the things they can to do with kids creatively. They like the idea of cooking too but no ones let them try that yet…
Mouse is 50/50 I mean she is Ratty’s sister after all and her Mom is so anal she must get frustrated enough to want to destroy something sometimes. She loves making things with Clarence as well though like blanket forts, decorating Clarence with stickers, bows, glitter.
Abby is teaching Clarence how to sew!!! :)))) She loves sewing and needle felting and prep cooking. She DOES love creating but if she gets frustrated she will destroy anything she’s working on. She’s very good at destroying peoples lives… >_>

My Sister Momoko/Momoko, Kaeru no Uta ga Kikoeru yo (2003) Film Recommendation
Tumblr media
TL;DR A story where a little girl’s handicap doesn’t stop her from living life to the fullest.
This little warrior refuses any coddling. If she falls down, she gets back up.
Tough as nails, infectious fighting spirit. Momoko represents an unwillingness to not let a condition or situation dictate how you live.
Solid character writing, good pacing, memorable, and it's not a long movie either, recommended 300%.
