In late winter we cut down a big mulberry tree at the back, north side of our house. It had gotten too big for its spot. Shading the deck and dropping mulberries all over, making a big mess, it attracted wildlife, lots of wildlife. I could live with the deer and the birds and the squirrels. But it was more alarming when I saw a bear out the back door with a cub. However, what pushed me over the edge last summer was when we routinely had a skunk off the back deck eating mulberries. My young impulsive dog was sure to get skunked before long.

A few years ago I asked our tree arborist about cutting it down but he persuaded us that too much wildlife depends on the tree. I lived with the tree for a few more years as it cast ever more shade and dropped more berries until the skunks rejoiced. I feel slightly guilty that I got someone else to cut it down, but they could remove it, a task beyond us these days. Today I walked around our property identifying which of our other mulberries bear fruit and which ones are males without fruit, relearning the fact that not all mulberries bear fruit. I said hello to groundhogs, squirrels, a young buck with fuzzy nubs of horns, and listened to the birds. I feel better now having relearned the habits of the mulberries. When I surprised the buck in multiple locations he looked up as if to say you caught me purple-mouthed. A nice variation on the old phrase caught red-handed as if smeared with guilt in the act of stealing delicious fruit. Now that I investigate the trees further from house and garden I am happy to share.

Princess of Wales - 2023 Statistics (FULL YEAR)

In 2023, the new Princess of Wales completed (by my count) 137 engagements. While this is around 30 engagements fewer than 2022, 2023 is still Catherine's second busiest year and - by far - her year with the most appearances not in the Court Circular. As well as this, she was sighted (or appeared) 17 times and appeared in a whopping 43 official (or unofficial and leaked!) photographs.

She gained three new military positions throughout the year and finished with 29 patronages. Of her 137 engagements, 76 were related to one of her patronages, averaging at one patronage visit every 2 engagements. Her most visited patronage was, of course, the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, with 48 visits. This was followed by the Rugby Football Union and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (with 4 visits each). She performed no engagements on behalf of Action for Children, The Air Cadet Organisation (she visited the air cadets during her visit to RAF Fairford, but this was not recorded as an official engagement), EACH, Family Action, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, the Natural History Museum, NHS Charities Together (although she met with NHS workers to celebrate the NHS's 75th birthday), Place2Be, RAF Coningsby, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal Photographic Society, or the 1851 Trust.

Of her engagements, 70 have been solo and 41 accompanied by her husband, the Prince of Wales. Three were also with her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, five with a range of foreign royals, as well as 16 with either the whole or most of the working British Royal Family, and two with both foreign royals and members of the BRF.

118 of her engagements physically took place in England, with all bar 3 physically occuring in the United Kingdom (with none in the Republic of Ireland). Of the 118 engagements which took place in England, 37 occured in London and 51 in Windsor. Catherine’s engagements also took her to 31 other areas of the UK. Catherine also performed engagements in Wales and Scotland. Catherine also undertook two engagements in France (for the Rugby World Cup) and one in Jordan (Crown Prince Hussein's wedding).

During the year, she performed engagements on a variety of themes. 42 of those engagements were predominantly related to her Early Years initiative, while 12 were linked to the military and 11 linked to culture, sport and diplomacy apiece. 10 engagements were specifically linked to the Coronation, while she also completed 9 engagements linked to mental health, 7 linked to children and young people, 3 linked to the outdoors, and 2 linked to the Commonwealth. Catherine also completed 19 engagements which could not otherwise be categorised.

Clotheswise, her most worn designer has been Alexander McQueen, with 28 outfits, followed by 14 outfits from Holland Cooper, while 11 items of clothing were unidentified. Her most carried bag designer was Mulberry (11), followed by Emmy London with 6, and 1 which was unidentifed. Mulberry has been her most carried bag designer in every year apart from 2020. Her most worn shoe designer continued being Gianvito Rossi (with 39 wears), followed by 8 pairs from Emmy London, and 6 from both Veja and Aquazzura. Once again, Catherine predominantly wore pieces inherited from either Diana (10) or the Queen (16). Aside from them, she also wore Daniela Draper jewellery 12 times. When it comes to accessories, her most worn item was her Anderson's belt (6 times), and she continued to return to hats made by Philip Treacy (6 times). She also wore 9 unidentified pieces. According to my (100% wrong) calculations - created from my own criteria (where items are counted each time she wears them), she wore £65,669.41 worth of new clothes this year and £267,495.29 worth of clothes in total.

The Red Door

Let’s say our hero’s name is Francesco. He does ceramics and grows one of the types of pears that they still ate during the time of Catherine de Medici: small, cherry-like, and pleasant-tasting. He installed a red door with a raised, flesh-colored relief of turtles in a spiral on it. Francesco’s door was dedicated to the memory of his friend, a genius, and when it opened, you didn’t see the hills or the sun setting behind the olive trees, but something else entirely… There was a sundial in his garden that showed astronomical time. Francesco was more than seventy years old. He had achieved a lot. His life was a script that he himself had written, but this is where his error was. He wrote a script, only a large script. Everything else was in the hands of God.

I’m a happy person – that’s what he would tell himself over and over. He had his own garden with little hillocks and tiles that he had breathed life into as if they were his own ceramic pictures – the mosaics of greenish-blue raised light that looked like a spring Resurrection… A wise dog… a wife as old as he was… They walk here along the path. A sunny house… big… no swimming pool or air conditioner. He didn’t want all that modern junk, even though it was over forty degrees in the shade. A basket full of big bright yellow and violet fruits that he had grown with his own hands…

How much more can he write? Fellini has been there for a long time, and not just Fellini. But here, life is unique… And that luxurious, hot, aromatic air… He’s rich, but what does he need it for now? What’s the sense in that? It’s odd: when you’re young and it seems like you can move mountains, you’re constrained by lack of money, and you spend all your energy on trying to earn something. And then, once you’ve achieved everything that you wanted, then it turns out that you’ve only got a few drops of life left in you, you’re grey as a dog and your digestion is ruined. There’s the entire secret of being. Even when you leave, there’s still some bitterness at the end, like some kind of bilious sediment. And what about other people? The ones who work all their lives, achieved their goals, suffered even more than you did and ended up with nothing. What do they do?

…here are his mulberries, olives, and peaches… In the shade it’s nice to drink velvety wine, nice to feel the clay giving under your fingers, sweet and unbearable to hug your wife, the one who understands you without a word. Quietly and unhurriedly assess what has been done, analyze what has passed, remember, remember everything and smile… Flip through the scenes of your own immortal movies. Look at the young couples embracing. Wash in the morning, shave, and inhale the aroma of your favorite coffee, read letters… Meet your children and grandchildren by the door…

He stops in the center of his clock. The shadow shows that it’s a quarter to two. Afterwards he goes to the red door. He breathes in deeply and opens it. His friend, the genius, sits on the hill and waves a welcoming hand at him.

On 22nd November 2022, the Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa before attending the Horse Guards Parade. For the special occasion, Catherine wore an eggplant-colored Emilia Wickstead coat dress with a pleated skirt and criss-cross lapel that coordinated with her Sean Barrett hat and matching Gianvito Rossi pointy-toe pumps. Even her Mulberry clutch came in the exact same shade of purple.

I reread the Princess diaries book series and as a timeline cleanse for a lighter tone, here’s what Prince William been up to as documented by Princess Mia Thermopolis:

1. Wills is the most popular royal and Mia is third most popular. (Unfortunately 2nd is you know who)

2. Mia first met Wills in Genovia when he was there to play a polo charity match with Phillipe Renaldo (Mia’s dad is still alive in the books) and Prince Rene, Mia’s Italian cousin.

3. Wills took pics of his cousin Simon Windsor, Lord Mulberry engaged in a game of strip bowling.

4. He sent Mia an email on her 16th bday and attended Mia’s 18th bday.

5. Mia & Michael were guests at William and Catherine’s wedding!!

Houses of Hawkins

The main houses of nobility within Hawkins that hold political sway. There are numerous other noble houses, but these are the ones that hold power over provincial decisions and hold seats on the crown’s council. (aka canon characters)

There are a few characters who were never given names in the show so I had to come up with them (ie Steve’s parents, Chrissy’s brother, Tommy’s parents, etc)

* - indicates the head of the household.

(MAJOR spoilers for the ending of Chapter Four below)

The Harringtons:

Monarch of Hawkins. Ruled from year 1-208 of the Golden Crown.

Consists of the King, Richard Harrington*, the Queen, Catherine Harrington, and their son, Steve Harrington. Nancy Wheeler, while married into the crown, retains the name of her family, though is a member of the household by proxy. Richard’s brother was the Lord of Kerley before the fall of Mirkwood when he was slain.

After the uprising, Steve Harrington is the only blood member of his lineage remaining.

The Byers:

Household in charge of the province of Kerley.

Consists of Joyce Byers* and her children Jonathan, Mike, and El. They are not of nobility but were granted the title of lordship by the crown after the reclaiming of Mirkwood. Since Jonathan is the sworn sword to Nancy, Will is the heir to the lordship. Their bloodline is old, and there are whispers that their lineage stems from a family beyond the Moonlit Wall from a time during the Old Kingdom.

The Wheelers:

One of the two households who control the province of Maple. Reside in the furthest northern city in the province.

Consists of Lord Ted Wheeler*, Lady Karen Wheeler, and their children Mike, Nancy, and Holly. Nancy was originally the heir to the household, but relinquished it to her brother upon marrying Steve.

The Sinclairs:

One of the two households who control the province of Maple.

Consists of Lord Charles Sinclair*, Lady Sue Sinclair, and their children Lucas and Erica. Lucas is the heir to the estate, but Erica has been trained since she was young for the role as well.

The Hendersons:

One of the two households who control the province of Elm.

Consists of Lady Claudia Henderson*. Her husband died by assassination during a visit to Loch Nora - no one has yet been convicted of any charges. Her son, Dustin, is presumed dead after the final siege of Moonlit Wall. It is assumed her household will die with her, but there are rumours she may give her title to one of the children from the north (Erica Sinclair or Holly Wheeler).

The Cunninghams:

One of the two households who control the province of Elm.

Consists of Laura Cunningham*, Phillip Cunningham, and their children Chrissy and Hayden. With Chrissy killed during the war, her younger brother Hayden is the only heir to the seat. They all hold a deep resentment to the crown after Steve vindicated the man they feel is responsible for Chrissy’s death.

The Hagans:

Household in charge of Dearborn.

Consists of Lord Bernard Hagan*, Lady Margery Hagan, and their son Tommy Hagan. Lord Hagan’s sister, Henrietta Hagan, was the ruler of Loch Nora before relinquishing her title to her nephew, Tommy. While Tommy leads Loch Nora, his wife Carol Hagan will be the regent in her future child’s steed should Bernard pass before Tommy relinquishes his title in Loch Nora.

The Perkins:

Household in charge of Denfield.

Consists of Lady Elizabeth Perkins and her array of daughters and granddaughters - including her estranged granddaughter, Carol Hagan. Lady Perkins has named Vickie, a previoiusly unknown decedent only recently reunited with her house name, as her heir. There are rumours it was intended for Carol before her marriage to the Hagan household.

The Carvers:

Household in charge of Mulberry.

Consists of Lord Gordon Carver*, Lady Rose Carver, and their son Jason Carver. Jason is the sole heir to the estate. They are the leaders of the uprising and subsequent political upheaval. And, [redacted until chapter 5/6 release].

The Wrights:

One of the two households who control the province of Sinai.

Consists of Lord Merrill Wright*, his wife and children.

The McCorkles:

One of the two households who control the province of Sinai.

Consists of Lord Eugene McCorkle*, his wife, and children.

WALK, WALK, FASHION BABY | For her first "Coronation" engagement, the Princess of Wales wore red, white and blue! Catherine repeated her Eponine London Wool Crepe Coat with Mandarin Collar, which she wore buttoned up over her Suzannah Flippy Wiggle dress. She carried her Mulberry Amberley bag and wore her Jimmy Choo Romy heels. The Princess also wore her Maria Black Cha Cha Earrings
