There is a scene in 2x01 where Danny is driving Max's car and Steve, after he escaped from prison, is hiding in the back seat.

We see Danny talking on the phone and there's a line "You are a monkey in a polka dot dress and I love you". Of course it's about Gracie cause 1) she's his Monkey 2) she wears dresses 3) he says "I love you" and she's his only girl in the world. So, it's just a daddy-daughter little talk.

I rewatched this episode today, in Polish. What's happening in Polish version? Well...

Danny says "You're my beloved honey bear". And then camera immediately goes to:

Yeah. Mr Beloved Honey Bear, I bet 😀

What a difference!

Canon: Danny tells Gracie he loves her and thanks to "monkey" and "dress" it's all 100% about her.

Polish translators: Ah yes, Grace is on the other end of the phone but you know *cough cough* Danny is not only talking to her, he's also very worried about Steve. Danny's mind is full of Steve. Danny's eyes want to look at Steve. Monkey in a polka dot dress? Oh no, dear! We are giving you beloved honey bear so you can't be sure. Is it about Grace? Is she a bear? Or maybe it's... *boom! zoom on Steve*. Beloved honey bear. Honey bear. What will you, watcher, choose? *oh of course we're implying that honey bear = Steve*

Well...

From Urban Dictionary. In Poland we sometimes use "honey bear" for kids but MOSTLY we use it in a romantic way. And please, this "beloved honey bear" and boom! Steve's face. It looks like Polish translators are McDanno shippers 😉 I'm very grateful for these extra vibes heh ♥️

By the way, Danny also says "I love you", "Danno loves you" and "All right, babe. All right" (both in canon and in Polish version) and now I'm wondering to whom he says this 😉 Cause seriously, he may be talking to Grace (I mean, to the phone) but Steve is so much on his mind so... 🤔 What if in the beginning Danny talks to Gracie ("you're my monkey...") but soon he (instinctively) starts talking to Steve? 🤭 What if he says he loves Steve no matter what and he assures him that "all right", it will be all right? He is Steve's Danno too, not only Grace's. Danno loves you, Steve. Danno is here and won't let anybody to hurt you. Danno will hide you, Danno will help you to be free again.

There is so much going on between all of them.#Even on a purely platonic reading - the miscommunication and male yearning for friendship hurt so bad.#When we got the Big Hug scene in the epilogue arc I was whooping and hollering! Pure catharsis moment!#I also don't like hugs very much so I really felt it went Shuro ('hates being touched') went in for the bear hug.#Do not get me started on the agony of 'always lying' Kabru telling the truth (I just wanted to be friends)#and 'always believes' Laios thinking it's another lie and brushing him off.#I am once again supporting dungeon meshi day by posting art. That's Right #lackadaisy #WHICH i have been reading since at least '07 when i was thirteen my god b/c this animation is based on the ongoing webcomic #like does its influence show up Directly in some Discrete way i can point to in my art? not very easily probably. And Yet.#the inspiration....i wasn't able to be Regularly Only for at least another year / art done Nonprofessionally Online was novel to me #like wow ppl can make & post fanart of w/e they love huh....didn't know webcomics were a thing & i never really read that many since but.#good god the quality of Lackadaisy at its onset is like this is superb?? this person putting in all their talent and effort???#and Then you get years & years more art and i don't even know what superlatives to throw out abt its quality as it evolves. obsessed w/it..#if i see a new lackadaisy comic page i Will be acting out. obviously this animation is a delight & also stunning. and fascinating to also #juxtapose as a Translation / Interpretation of the comic in a different medium & standalone snippet of Story #and that we're not even quite there in the comic timeline; Taking Notes abt character info we get distilledly here....genuinely love like #take it back to '07 i'm like oh boy can't wait for the dream team to assemble. then a decade later when it did? loosing my mind at how some things that are So good can be So niche why can’t we just be a hivemind

Just one example, my favorite example, is:

Shattered Glass Soundwave!!!

He’s gone through Multiple reformats varying between with his consent and,,, not. The latest of which took place when they didn’t have many materials

So they used half earth metals half Cybertronian ones

As it turns out? Those two things don’t mix very well. His joints are Horrible. They lock up randomly, the worst of which being the door to his tape deck.

He physically isn’t able to dock his cassettes reliably because they might get stuck in there.

What does he do to fix this? So glad you asked!! He has his own assistive aids, in this case: a portable external carrying case

It was made and personalized to work specifically for him and his situation

Shū Being Socially Awkward

🎻Shū may come off as nonchalant, but he’s actually quite socially awkward (even stated by Yui+ Reiji) Yuma tries to give him a fist bump but Shū genuinely doesn’t know what it is and stands there like “huh?🧍🏼”

This could be due to his lack of socializing during childhood and his self-isolation as he got older. (aww)

Yuma: There ya have it, so just leave this to me. Come on...

Just popping by to say that 'Wanyi' and your words for why it's a good name for Zuko's ship hit me like a sack of bricks to the chest. absolutely incredible choice, I am REELING.

I'm glad you found it so touching!

I haven’t read Embers. I thought MuffinLance intentionally named Zuko’s warship 萬一 (one in ten thousand, what if) from the start. It’s been a bit bewildering to see a mistake become new fanon.

At risk of ruining the sentimentality of the name Wanyi, I would issue a few caveats to people adopting it for their fics. It’s really more of a retrofit of the old name—something to rebrand while sounding and looking similar enough to Wani to not be distracting.

Wanyi is pinyin romanization, used in the People’s Republic of China. You could just as easily spell it Wan-i or Wani. Canon uses a mix of romanization methods. However, if the goal is rebranding, Wanyi makes sense.

Wanyi isn’t an Authentic™ historical Chinese boat name. That would be something like Galloping Clouds or Tranquil Seas.

You might want to use a different culture instead of Chinese for Zuko’s warship. Canonically, there are Fire Nation characters with Chinese inspired names, like Zhao, Piandao, and Shyu, but if your fan-fiction is drawing more inspiration from Japanese or Thai culture, maybe a different name is more suited.

Wanyi is often used for negative what-ifs. An unlikely disaster. Zuko is, after all, a disaster magnet. And the cause of many misfortunes.

Wanyi literally means one in ten thousand, but it is grammatically used to indicate an extremely unlikely possibility. Like finding the avatar. To me, it feels ominous, anxious, yearning in an unrealistic sort of way, which I think all speak to Zuko's character arc. Idk, what do other Chinese speakers think?
