El rey Jaehaerys I Targaryen, apodado el Conciliador y el Viejo Rey, fue el cuarto hijo del rey Aenys I Targaryen y la reina Alyssa Velaryon. Fue Rey de los Siete Reinos entre 48 y 103 d.C. Fue el jinete del dragón Vermithor.

Durante la Rebelión de la Fe Militante, el rey Aenys I, la reina Alyssa y sus hijos menores se radicaron en Rocadragón, inseguros ante la situación en la capital. En la isla, la salud del rey decayó y la reina viuda Visenya tomó a su cargo su recuperación; sin embargo, al enterarse de que sus hijos mayores Aegon y Rhaena estaban sitiados en Refugio Quebrado, su salud empeoró considerablemente. A la muerte del rey Aenys I, el príncipe Maegor tomó el trono pasando por encima del derecho de nacimiento de los hijos de Aenys. La reina Alyssa, Jaehaerys y Alysanne fueron mantenidos prisioneros por dos años en Rocadragón por la reina viuda Visenya.

En 44 d.C., la reina viuda Visenya murió. El caos de su muerte le dio a la reina Alyssa la oportunidad de huir de la isla con sus hijos, llevándose además la espada de acero valyrio Hermana Oscura. Eventualmente, encontraron refugio en Bastión de Tormentas.

Para 48 d.C., el rey Maegor I seguía sin concebir un heredero. El príncipe Jaehaerys, único hijo varón sobreviviente del rey Aenys I, hizo patente su reclamo al Trono de Hierro, siendo apoyado por Lord Rogar Baratheon de Bastión de Tormentas, a quien Jaehaerys nombró Lord Protector del Reino y Mano del Rey.

Después de que Maegor muriera misteriosamente sentado en el trono, Jaehaerys fue coronado rey a los catorce años. Heredó un reino en guerra con la Fe de los Siete. Jaehaerys fue conocido por su amor por los viajes, visitando una vez el Norte con la reina Alysanne, seis dragones y media corte. Su nieto Viserys le contaba a sus propios nietos una historia sobre Jaehaerys de que voló al norte del Muro para hacer frente a salvajes, gigantes y cambiapieles. Fue durante su reinado que Lago Hondo, uno de los castillos de la Guardia de la Noche, fue construido. En vez de nombrar heredera a la hija de éste, Rhaenys, el Gran Consejo del año 92 d.C. nombró heredero a uno de sus hijos menores, Baelon, lo que provocó una fuerte disputa con su esposa Alysanne.

Un gran torneo se llevó a cabo en Desembarco del Rey en 98 d.C. para celebrar los cincuenta años de Jaehaerys I en el Trono de Hierro. En la liza final, Ser Ryam Redwyne y Ser Clement Crabb rompieron treinta lanzas, con lo que Jaehaerys los proclamó co-campeones, en lo que se denomina la mejor justa de en la historia de Poniente. Después de que su viejo amigo el Septón Barth falleció, Jaehaerys eligió como Mano al legendario caballero Ser Ryam Redwyne, el Lord Comandante de la Guardia Real. Es cierto que fue injusto con su nieta y con Alysanne al pensar que una mujer es menor que un hombre (Y ni había razón para descalificar a Rhaenys).  Aun así el amor entre el y su esposa mostraba ser muy fuerte desde que eran niños, incluso después de muertos sus cenizas de los dos reposan juntos (Hasta que llego Robert).

King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, nicknamed the Conciliator and the Old King, was the fourth son of King Aenys I Targaryen and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. He was King of the Seven Kingdoms between 48 and 103 A.D. It was the dragon rider Vermithor.

During the Rebellion of the Militant Faith, King Aenys I, Queen Alyssa and their younger sons settled in Dragonstone, unsure of the situation in the capital. On the island, the king's health declined and the widowed queen Visenya took charge of her recovery; however, upon learning that their older sons Aegon and Rhaena were besieged in Broken Refuge, their health worsened considerably. On the death of King Aenys I, Prince Maegor took the throne by passing over the birthright of the children of Aenys. Queen Alyssa, Jaehaerys and Alysanne were held prisoner for two years on Dragonstone by the widowed Queen Visenya.

In AD 44, the widowed queen Visenya died. The chaos of her death gave Queen Alyssa the opportunity to flee the island with her children, also taking the Dark Sister Valyrian steel sword. Eventually, they found refuge in Storm's End.

By AD 48, King Maegor I still had no heir. Prince Jaehaerys, the only surviving male child of King Aenys I, made his claim to the Iron Throne evident, being supported by Lord Rogar Baratheon of Stronghold of Storms, whom Jaehaerys named Lord Protector of the Realm and Hand of the King.

After Maegor mysteriously died sitting on the throne, Jaehaerys was crowned king at fourteen. He inherited a kingdom at war with the Faith of Seven. Maegor had used brutal methods to eradicate the rebellion, offering rewards for the heads of members of the Militant Faith, but the revolts continued. Jaehaerys pacified the kingdom, offering amnesty to all the participants and accomplices of the Faith. The offer was accepted and the orders were dissolved on the condition that the Iron Throne would always defend the Faith. This act earned him the nickname of The Conciliator.

Two years after ascending the throne, in A.D. 50, King Jaehaerys I took his sister, Princess Alysanne Targaryen, as his wife. She had as hand a septon, Barth, who held her position for forty years. With the help of Septon Barth, Jaehaerys reformed the kingdom more than any previously living king. Jaehaerys created a unified legal code, so that from the North to the Marches of Dorne the kingdom would share common law. Major improvement works were carried out in the city of Desembarco del Rey, such as sewers, drains and wells. A vast network of roads was built, which was given the name of Camino Real. The king and queen are known to have stayed at the Posada de la Encrucijada during their travels, so often that the Two Crowns came to be called.

Jaehaerys ruled more than five decades, becoming King Targaryen with the longest reign, earning him the nickname of The Old King as well. He brought to the kingdom a time of great peace, aided by his sister wife, the kind Queen Alysanne. It was she who convinced him to abolish the privilege of the First Night of the Nobles. Alysanne was also responsible for the transfer of new territories to the Night's Watch, which was later known as the New Entertainment.

Such were the wisdom and diplomatic skills of Jaehaerys that he managed to negotiate a truce between House Blackwood and House Bracken, giving them fifty years of peace.

Jaehaerys was known for his love of travel, once visiting the North with Queen Alysanne, six dragons and a half court. Her grandson Viserys told his own grandchildren a story about Jaehaerys that he flew north of the Wall to face savages, giants, and skin changers. It was during his reign that Lago Hondo, one of the castles of the Night's Watch, was built. The construction of the castle was paid for with his wife's jewels and was built by the men the king had sent north especially for it.

He had thirteen children with his sister-wife Alysanne: Aegon, Daenerys, Aemon, Baelon, Alyssa, Maegelle, Vaegon, Daella, Saera, Viserra, Gaemon, Valerion and Gael. The oldest of them who survived childhood, Aemon, died before his father. Instead of appointing his daughter, Rhaenys, the Grand Council of AD 92. She appointed one of her youngest sons, Baelon, as her heir, which caused a strong dispute with her wife Alysanne.

A great tournament was held at King's Landing in 98 AD. to celebrate the fifty years of Jaehaerys I on the Iron Throne. In the final battle, Ser Ryam Redwyne and Ser Clement Crabb broke thirty spears, making Jaehaerys proclaim them co-champions, in what is called the best jousting event in Westeros history. After his old friend Septón Barth passed away, Jaehaerys chose the legendary knight Ser Ryam Redwyne, the Lord Commander of the Royal Guard, as his Hand. Being Ryam, while a great knight, proved unsuitable for his new role, and he was soon replaced by the king's son and heir, Prince Baelon.

Baelon died suddenly in A.D. 101, and Ser Otto Hightower took over as Hand of the King in the later years of Jaehaerys. Baelon's death meant the convening of a Great Council. The Great Council of A.D. 101 he chose Viserys, Jaehaerys' grandson, as his new heir.

After the death of both Baelon and Alysanne, Jaehaerys' pain was enormous. The Old King's mind soon began to drift in the last two years of his reign, and for the remainder of his life he remained bedridden. Otto Hightower ruled, while his daughter Alicent Hightower cared for the king, reading with him, washing him, and feeding him.

In A.D. 103, King Jaehaerys I died of advanced age. He was 69 years old and had reigned fifty-five. His body was cremated in Dragon Pit and his ashes buried next to those of his wife Alysanne, under the Red Fort. The entire kingdom mourned his death, including Dorne. He was succeeded by his grandson, Prince Viserys Targaryen.

He was one of the few kings who reigned for many years and had a good head. Admittedly, he was unfair to his granddaughter and Alysanne in thinking that a woman is less than a man (and there was no reason to disqualify Rhaenys). Even so the love between him and his wife showed to be very strong since they were children, even after death their ashes of the two rest together (Until Robert arrived).

After recovering from his injuries, Izuku attempts to cheer him up, to the point of sharing with him parts of his secret. Meanwhile, news that All Might is teaching at U.A. are received by some individuals with contempt.

Black Clover EP#28 - The One I've Set My Heart On: Black Bull member Finral Roulacase has organised a mixer party of three women, himself, Asta and Luck. As they leave via Finral’s portal spell Noelle follows then hides, reasoning that she is ensuring Asta doesn’t get in trouble, when really she is jealous of him meeting other girls. At the mixer the ladies are definitely not impressed by Asta, Finral or Luck, deciding Asta is too young and a commoner, Finral is too flashy and Luck is too violent. Noelle is relieved the mixer is a disaster. Nearby Sekke is attending another mixer. Asta is left alone with a young woman named Rebecca Scarlet. After a few uneasy moments they end up bonding over the fact they both have multiple younger siblings, causing Noelle to panic. A large drunk man insults Rebecca so Asta furiously throws him across the room where he lands on Sekke, ruining his mixer. Rebecca develops a crush on Asta but decides to pursue him slowly after learning he loves someone else. Noelle mistakenly thinks Asta has a secret crush on her which makes her happy. Finral and Luck are both rejected by the other two ladies for being too weird.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders: Battle in Egypt EP#42 - The Miasma of the Void, Vanilla Ice, Part 1: D'Arby uses Atum to peer into Jotaro's soul, which he uses to determine whether Jotaro is lying or not. However, contrary to his deduction that Jotaro was not lying about his pitch, his pitches turn out to be different from expected. This leads D'Arby to suspect that Jotaro is cheating somehow, though in a way that cannot be deciphered by his Stand's reliance on yes/no questions. As D'Arby desperately tries to find out how Jotaro is cheating, Jotaro wins more homeruns, resulting in D'Arby subconsciously admitting defeat and releasing Kakyoin's soul. At last, D'Arby discovers that Joseph was the one cheating on Jotaro's behalf the entire time, using Hermit Purple to control the video game while Jotaro handled Atum's questions. While Jotaro dishes swift punishment to D'Arby, opening up a way out of the game room, DIO's right-hand man, Vanilla Ice, cuts off his own head to provide DIO with the blood needed to complete his assimilation of Jonathan's body, but DIO turns it down and brings him back to life, stating he will get blood from someone else and sending him to attack the others. Meanwhile, Polnareff, Avdol, and Iggy venture inside the mansion, where Iggy manages to immediately take down a Stand user named Kenny G to stop the illusions he was creating. Immediately afterwards, however, Avdol is caught off guard and killed by Vanilla Ice's Stand, Cream, who disintegrates his body with the void inside his mouth, leaving Polnareff and Iggy stunned.

Hunter x Hunter: The Chimera Ant Arc EP#101 - Ikalgo × And × Lightning: Killua confronts Ikalgo but later, saves him from getting eaten by his own subordinates. The Ortho Siblings confront Killua in their game, a 1-501 dart game where he gets continuously attacked. After feigning death, Killua beheads his opponents in a flash, but he collapses due to extreme blood loss and Ikalgo decides to repay the favor by taking him to be treated.

Space Dandy EP#21 - A World with No Sadness, Baby: An unfortunate encounter with a dark nebula maroons Dandy on a mysterious planet called Planet Limbo populated by bizarre beings and even more bizarre environments. As he explores the strange landscape with a man named Ferdinand, Dandy scrambles to find a way back home. Dandy denies that sadness is an absent concept in this strange world of the seemingly dead, arguing that it is impossible for sadness and happiness to be entwined. Struggling with his memories of how he ended up on Planet Limbo, Dandy later meets a girl named Poe, who gives him an insightful look on life and death from her perspective of the planet. Poe sends Dandy to a different dimension back to the Aloha Oe where he never encountered Planet Limbo. This episode has a drastic change from the typical sound and art style, while its somber mood and alien design contrast sharply with the typical upbeat feel and vibrant comedic styles.

If a possible marathon is on July 7, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Final will take place on July 15.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena Manga Recap: To Till or The Plot Actually Happens

Last time, we read the introductory arc of this manga, however wether you only saw the anime or this humble post is your first contact with “Revolutionary Girl Utena”  it doesn’t really matter if you haven’t read the introduction, the characters and most plot threads that appear there are never spoken of again so if the manga doesn’t care about them, neither should you (unless you want to take this quiz). The real story starts here. So first allow me to present you to the main characters:

Utena Tenjou: The protagonist, she was saved by a prince when she was little and now her dream is to to find him and emulate him. Not very bright, but at least she’s good at basketball.

Anthy Himemiya: She’s supposed to have a protagonic role but the manga often forgets that she’s a character. We could describe manga!Anthy as a total cutie with mysterious powers. What kind of mysterious powers? We’ll find out soon.

Wakaba Shinohara: Best friend ever, 1000 times better than Utena’s other “best friend” from the introductory arc. If the universe was fair she would be Utena’s girlfriend, but we are in the worst timeline and Wakaba has a terrible taste in men.

This douchebag (A.K.A Kyouichi Saionji): He’s a total asshole and would probably die alone unless he hooks up with…

This other douchebag (A.K.A. Touga Kiryuu): He’s the reason of like 69% of my frustration with this manga. I even wrote an essay about it.

These other two members of the Student Council: Are not important… yet. Let’s wait till next volume to learn more about them.

Anyway, let’s go straight to the story. Naive tomboy Utena Tenjou enrolls in the prestigious Ohtori Academy hoping to find her beloved prince that saved her many years ago. Meanwhile, the Student Council of Ohtori –– a very exclusive group formed by misguided teens –– dedicate their time engaging in sword duels in order to “win” the Rose Bride, a girl called Anthy Himemiya who has the legendary Sword of Dios inside her…. literally.

Quite, literally. (Also, what’s wrong with Saionji’s face?)

Legend has it that whoever possesses Anthy and wields the Sword of Dios will have the Power to Revolutionize the World. If you have never seen the anime and all this mess confuses you, let me warn you that this isn’t the weirdest part of “Revolutionary Girl Utena”.

At the beginning of the story, Anthy is engaged to Saionji (the douchebag), how did this happen? not even the most cultivated utenologists know for sure, so don’t ask me. As we have stablished before, Saionji is a total jerk and treats Anthy badly (he claims he loves her even if he slaps her frequently) however, this isn’t what prompts our local hero Utena Tenjou to kick his butt, turns out that her best friend, Wakaba, was in love with him and Saionji broke her heart and humiliated her publicly. Utena proceeds to challenge him to a duel which he accepts because he wrongly thinks that she’s after the Rose Bride.

The ring that the prince gave Utena when they met is actually a key that allows her to enter the very secret Dueling Arena where the Student Council hold their very secret duels. The place looks really cool actually.

(Notice the castle in the sky? This is normal in “Revolutionary Girl Utena”)

Even if she doesn’t know anything about this Rose Bride stuff, Utena manages to beat Saionji by using a broken wooden sword no less, because sometimes she can be a badass like that. Thanks to this, Utena earns the Sword of Dios, which causes her to go all Super Saiyan Pink.

(what? you thought I was joking?)

Touga –– the Student Council President and also a total creep–– was watching the duel in secret and gets very surprised when he sees Utena wielding the Sword of Dios. Apparently Utena is the only one that has managed to activate the sword’s enormous power. He gets so excited that he jumps into the dueling arena and declares that he could be falling for Utena. The girl feels flustered and gets out of there as fast as she can…leaving Anthy behind. Good job, hero.

However, running away doesn’t mean that Utena is free from all this mess, soon enough she learns that she’s now engaged with Anthy and that both of them have to live together in the East Hall dorms (alongside Anthy’s weird “monkey”). Anthy explains that now that they are engaged more Student Council members are going to keep challenging her to duels on an attempt to win Anthy from her. Utena wants none of that nonsense and she decides to investigate, however. she gets distracted when she finds someone that looks like her prince at the rose garden. Just when she tries to get to him, Touga appears out of nowhere and kisses her…

Ugh...

For some reason this particular kiss scene keeps appearing again and again in other iterations of the story like the musical and the light novels. In the manga there’s two pages of this and the second one is beautifully framed with roses. This is supposed to establish Touga as the charming playboy he is…but actually, the whole thing is annoying at best and gross at worst, not even the protagonist herself is happy with getting her first kiss from that guy…however, to be fair, it’s better than getting kissed in the seat of a car by a guy who doubles your age while your friend is watching… so yeah.

After that unpleasant experience, Utena asks Touga what’s going on. He explains that all the Student Council members get a ring just like Utena’s that helps them to access the Dueling Arena and fight in order to win the Rose Bride. They do this under the orders of a mysterious entity known as “World’s End” who only communicates with them via letters and who has assured them that having the Sword of Dios that lies within Anthy will grant them enough power to accomplish whatever they want. Yeah… sounds legit. Touga invites Utena to a dance and promises to tell her more about “World’s End”, however, the girl refuses.

Shortly after, Utena finds Saionji slapping Anthy AGAIN (this happens a lot in the story), she stops Saionji and tells him that if he has any problem with Anthy being engaged to her, then he should duel her again. Anthy is surprised that Utena is now getting involved in the duels. Utena says she’ll keep fighting until she finds out what’s really going on.

That night… (or some night, the manga isn’t good at telling how much time has passed), the girls receive a package from Touga with a pair of dresses for the dance, Utena still doesn’t want to go but she wants Anthy to socialize with more people and anyway, the plot needs them to be there so off they go.

Utena takes this opportunity to ask Touga about “World’s End” but the guy doesn’t tell her anything because he only wants to talk about how pretty she looks in the dress that he got her. Utena just wasted her time and she didn’t help Anthy at all since she left her behind. Meanwhile Anthy is being bullied and slapped, again. Look, if you’re taking an introvert to a party you MUST hang out with them and ensure that they are comfortable at all times! This is Handling your Introvert 101, Utena! Get a grip! To make things worse, Saionji appears, takes Anthy with him and tells her that he chose the dress she’s now wearing. Now I wonder if buying dresses for girls is Touga’s signature move and Saionji, being the big loser that he is, attempted to imitate him.

Our hero tries to rescue Anthy but, in a total dick move, Saionji keeps Anthy away from Utena and then proceeds to attack with a sword. Utena is defenseless because she can’t get the sword of Dios and also the plot has decided to turn her into a damsel in distress again. Now, I’m not expecting the hero to be a total badass who can win a fight with her bare hands (although that would be awesome), it’s ok if Utena is defeated sometimes, however, what really bugs me from this particular development is… well we’ll find out next time.

(If the manga can end on a cliffhanger so can my recap).

A Misspent Youth - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

1816 words, gen. Getting arrested with friends, swearing.

An attempt at revenge gets Josuke, Okuyasu, and Rohan thrown into Holding. Fortunately, Josuke memorized his nephew Jotaro’s number for this explicit purpose.

A very plotless little thing I thought up to a) fit in a very specific joke about Rohan being a twink and b) work out a universe I have in mind where the Joestar family all live in NYC and a non-evil but still might be a vampire Dio is their lawyer.

“I’m never hanging out with you clowns again.”

Rohan was squished between the walls of muscle that were Josuke and Okuyasu. The cops up front were grimly silent. The city outside was dark and judgmental, eyes tracking the police car weaving through traffic. The cuffs dug into Rohan’s delicate wrists and if this impacted his ability to draw, he was suing Josuke into oblivion.

The idea had been a simple one – get vengeance on the asshole that broke Koichi’s nose – enough to rope Rohan into it. What was supposed to be an act of petty vandalism quickly spiraled into being chased by dogs, indignant homeowners, and getting their asses tackled to the concrete by cops intent on making an example of them. They were thrown into the back of a cop car and were now being hauled off to holding. Sweat gathered at the back of Rohan’s neck. He wouldn’t do well in prison.

“Don’t worry, guys,” Josuke promised. “I’ll get us out of this.”

“I don’t think you can sweet talk the cops,” Rohan said flatly. Josuke frowned.

“I wasn’t planning that!” Josuke exclaimed. “I have contacts that can get us out.”

“Bullshit,” Rohan said flatly. Josuke, despite all his talk, was barely a petty criminal. This was probably his first time getting arrested, ever.

“It’s true!” Okuyasu replied, which meant nothing. Okuyasu would back up Josuke in anything.

“Name one lawyer.”

“Dio Brando,” Josuke declared proudly. Rohan raised an eyebrow.

“Like hell you know Dio Brando,” Rohan said. “We’re fucked.”

Josuke sputtered. In the front, one of the cops barked, “Shut up back there!”

The boys went silent, brimming with fear and irritation. The cop car continued its ominous long drive. Rohan wondered what it would take to become a prison tattoo artist. The car parked in front of the local station and the boys were hauled out. The cops marched them, single file, up the stairs and into the station, tossing them in the holding tank with the drunks. Rohan hovered close to Okuyasu – he may hate both him and Josuke, but Okuyasu and Josuke were built for prison.

“Don’t worry guys,” Josuke murmured. “I have a plan.”

Josuke’s plans got them into this mess into the first place. The boy and his ridiculous pompadour sauntered up to the cop on duty.

“Hey!” Josuke called out through the holes in the holding tank’s plexiglass windows. “I get a phone call, yeah? I need to make a call!”

The cop sighed and said, “Fine, fine. Fucking kids.”

Josuke was escorted to the phones. Okuyasu and Rohan leaned in close to eavesdrop, but it was ultimately pointless – he was too far away. Josuke shifted from foot to foot during the whole call, jittery and nervous. The phone call ended after a couple minutes, and Josuke was pushed back into the holding cell.

“We’re going to get out soon,” Josuke said with a grin. Rohan raised a doubtful eyebrow.

 It was one in the morning, the earliest Jotaro had gone to bed in weeks.

He didn’t really know what to expect when he applied for the Marine Biology PhD program, beyond a chance to work with animals and getting wet. Despite the groans of his peers, the coursework wasn’t too bad – Jotaro had double majored in Biology and Environmental Science in undergrad, he was no stranger to late nights – but the coursework on top of trying to hammer Bio 101 concepts into idiot freshmen’s heads was a dangerous combination. He did not remember being that incompetent at age eighteen. He did not remember his fellow students trying to seduce their teachers. He regretted quitting smoking.

The bed of his postage stamp grad student apartment was too short for his towering frame, and yet it still felt like heaven when Jotaro sunk into its cheap mattress face first. He groaned deeply, the tension that knotted in his shoulders slowly relaxing as thoughts of a long weekend of sleep and more sleep lulled him. His pillowcases still smelt of his mother’s favorite detergent, and Jotaro smiled at the thought of last week’s visit, where he got homecooked food and his laundry done in his childhood home. Jotaro sighed, holding his pillow tight as sleep tip-toed up to tuck him in—

His cellphone rang out. Jotaro’s eyes snapped open. Pure rage filled his heart.

He didn’t bother checking the number when he answered it, just growling out a low, dangerous, “What?”

“Um, hi, Jotaro!” Josuke answered in a trembling, cracking voice. “Uh, I got arrested?”

“You got what,” Jotaro said flatly. He probably shouldn’t judge as he was no stranger to cops and holding cells when he was Josuke’s age, but he also wasn’t calling his nephew at one in the morning to bail him out.

“Please, they stuck us in the drunk tank and we’re not meant for prison,” Josuke pitifully begged. “It’s my fault and I promised my friends I’d get us out.”

Jotaro’s familial duty won out over his anger.

“Fine, fine,” Jotaro sighed. “I’ll get you out. Good grief…”

“Thank you Jotaro!” Josuke cheered. “I’ll make it up to you—”

Jotaro hung up, crawling out of his warm bed to put on pants and reminding himself that a grown-ass twenty-four-year-old man punching a seventeen-year-old boy was unacceptable behavior. On the drive to the station, he cranked up the volume on a shitty rock station to keep himself awake.

He had never been in the position of picking someone out of Holding before, and the cop flashed him a disinterested look when he approached the counter.

“I’m here for the three teenage chucklefucks,” he explained, and the cop immediately knew who Jotaro meant.

“Only a parent or guardian can get them out,” the cop said dully. Jotaro’s grip on the counter was white-knuckle, and he closed his eyes, focusing on his slow breathing. He was no longer seventeen. Punching people had actual consequences now.

From his jacket he produced his cellphone and scrolled through his contacts until he found one particular number. He showed it to the cop: DIO BRANDO – EMERGENCIES ONLY.

“Listen,” Jotaro said lowly. “You and I both know who this is. One of those boys’ old man is Joseph Joestar. If I call this number, pure hellfire will rain down upon you and this city.”

That was a far more effective threat than punching anyway. Jotaro didn’t like namedropping like that – one of the many reasons he used just Kujo instead of the full Joestar-Kujo – but he wanted this over as quickly as possible.

The boys were ushered out of the cell and into Jotaro’s custody. He recognized Okuyasu, but not the tiny one. He didn’t linger on it.

“Backseat,” Jotaro growled. They started to protest. “All of you.”

The lowest register of Jotaro’s already deep voice sent the boys scrambling into the car, packing themselves like sardines in the back. Jotaro got into the front seat and rested his hands on the steering wheel, staring out into the twinkling lights of the city and taking a deep, steadying breath. He looked back and squinted at them.

“Whose twink is this?” he asked, pointing at the skinny one in the middle. He squawked indignantly.

“That’s Rohan,” Josuke said.

“What’s a twink?” Okuyasu asked.

“I’m no one’s twink,” Rohan spat. He was wearing a cropped sweater and skinny jeans.

“Right,” Jotaro said skeptically. “Why did you guys get arrested? Fighting?”

Josuke turned pink.

“We were egging a dude’s house,” Okuyasu admitted. “But we got the wrong house…”

Jesus wept.

“That’s the most pathetic arrest story I’ve ever heard,” Jotaro said, starting up the car.

“Like you’ve been arrested,” Rohan muttered. Josuke tried to shush him to no avail.

“I once beat four guys when I was your age,” Jotaro said. “And I just bailed your asses out of jail.”

“Mom’s going to kill me,” Josuke sighed. “I told her I was staying over at Rohan’s…”

Indeed, each of the boys had told their family they were staying over at the other’s, leaving them without a place for the night. Once again, that ingrained Joestar familial duty won out.

“You guys can sleep at my apartment, but only if you’re quiet.”

“So cool,” Okuyasu murmured. “College apartment!”

“It’s the graduate dorms,” Jotaro said grimly. “No one parties there. Just suffers.”

 Jotaro’s apartment was small, but he was the only one who lived in it.

The boys looked around it with wide eyes. Jotaro had no idea why – there were some cheap IKEA furniture teetering with books, errant kitchen equipment Holly had insisted he take, and some posters Kakyoin bullied him into putting up. It looked very similar to his freshman dorm room and the shitty apartments that followed.

“You all get the floor,” Jotaro said. He pulled a beer from the fridge and chugged it, because it was that sort of night, and tossed the can in recycling. “Find a way to split the couch pillows.”

The boys squabbled as they divided up the cushions and pillows of the couch. Jotaro had been an obnoxious teenage boy in a quiet, brooding type of way, and even after he met Kakyoin their mischief was mostly getting into street fights and scamming beer from convenience shop clerks who thought Jotaro was a grown man. They weren’t particularly loud like Josuke and his friends were, even after they met Polneraff and Avdol.

“Good grief, can you all shut up?” Jotaro snapped. The boys quieted down with a grumble.

“I was kind of hoping to go to some crazy college party,” Okuyasu murmured.

“Thank you, Jotaro,” Josuke said. Jotaro sighed, turning off the overhead light and getting into bed.

“Go to sleep,” he ordered. “And be quiet.”

More grumbling, but the boys ultimately settled down.

“Your nephew’s scary,” Okuyasu whispered to Josuke. It was the last thing Jotaro heard before he finally, blessedly, went to sleep.

 Jotaro woke up with the sun peeking through his curtains. His stomach grumbled, and he thought idly of texting Kakyoin about breakfast. On the floor, there were snores, and Jotaro turned to see them in a big, anamorphous puddle on the floor, limbs and pillows everywhere. It brought to mind that summer after they all graduated, driving in a big SUV from NYC to San Francisco, Polneraff wailing to the radio and cackling campfires out in the middle of nowhere, four not-small boys shoved into a tiny hotel room and making due.

Polneraff was off in Paris and Avdol was in Washington state. Only Kakyoin remained in the city, but he was consumed by his MFA like Jotaro was consumed by his PhD, their paths only crossing for too-brief breakfasts and bar crawls. It felt strange to be so far from them, knowing the days of crashing on dorm room floors and getting arrested were so far away.

He groped around the nightstand for his phone. Kakyoin wouldn’t mind the extra company.

AMVs--a dying artform

As I reported, this year was the very last year that the people who normally host the AMV Contest for Oni-Con are going to be doing it. To quote from their announcement: “....Oni-Con XVI (2019) will be our LAST AMV Contest we will present.This desision did not come easy for us, but this decision has been thrown around each year prior at how we will end our long run of presenting AMV Contests. We believe now is the best time. Bear in mind that AnimeFunTV itself is NOT ending, only presenting AMV Contests for conventions is ending.We have met some incredible people and seen some outstanding music videos during our time presenting contests for conventions. We want to make Oni-Con XVI (2019) our best show going out but we can’t do it with out your support, so hurry and submit your videos! We were also granted an extended time for our show at Oni-Con so we will announce some special things soon.We’d like to thank the Oni-Con staff who have been very helpful and supportive to us, all those who helped past and present; to all the attendees who watch the shows and lastly all the people who have submitted to our contests both past and present. We appreciate everyone.” I was glad at least that I got to thank them personally for the FRIDAY 10 year Retrospective Screening they held in one of the panel rooms. Also heard on a recent Anime World Order podcast that Anime Weekend Atlanta used to be *THE* con for AMVs but even this once proud tradition is waning for them, the emphasis shifting to live Japanese pop-rock music, inviting TeddyLoid to Guest DJ, etc. Due to the untimely passing of my Dad I was not able to attend the actual AMV Contest with other fans on Saturday night.  I’m glad video of it was archived but the experience just isn’t the same as feeling it live with everyone else....(sigh). Anyway, this is the Saturday set-list I missed and will have to watch later by myself....
