PSYCHIC LOBOTO HEADCANONS PART 2
part 1
9. Loboto does not assist Oleander with the brain tank plan (Crispin takes his place at thorny towers and Sheegor takes his place in the Zanotto kidnapping), he is instead the one member of camp staff besides cruller to stay behind & watch the kids. He's also disgusted with Oleanders actions and briefly considered drowning him.
10. Loboto is very distrusting and cautious towards Razputins family at first due to how raz talked about them and the curse at camp. He warms up to them once he's certain they're not abusive in any way.
11. His childhood lobotomy failed because the intense fear he felt unlocked new psychic abilities and he nearly put the hospital underwater in his panic. This caught the psychonauts' attention, Otto was sent to retrieve him, and Loboto was raised in the motherlobe from that day on. (This was post-maligula & when construction of the motherlobe had just been completed.)
12. has a degree in marine biology and info dumps about fish whenever an opportunity presents itself.
13. Loves horror & romcom movies, but also enjoys sci-fi thanks to Sasha

"Not even a little bit tired..."
I tried to digitalize this but my stylus was being weird and gave me a weird sensory overload, so y'all are just getting the sketch for now.
Aquatonauts AU stuff -- I have yet to actually post anything about this au. (Spoilers for PSYN 2 toward the bottom)
Featuring Dr. Caligosto Loboto, Coach Morceau Oleander, Bobby Loboto-Zilch, Mr. Bun, and Linda.
They're not officially together, and will never openly admit they're basically married, but it's painfully obvious, especially when Bobby calls Oleander 'Dad'.
I'll digitalize this eventually, when I can mentally handle this stylus sticking to the screen lol--
As usual, feel free to send asks about this au. There's a metric ton of lore already, but I'll write a few basics--
- Caligosto had decent parents and grew up as Otto's student. He's been best friends with Oleander since they were 18, they're both 52 now
- The Deluge was 30 years ago in this timeline
- Augustus' parents were saved by Cal, and he grew up as Compton and Caligosto's student. He is now one of the heads of the Psychonauts, under Truman but above Hollis. The whole Aquato family lives in the Motherlobe, and always has-- they're very in tune with their psychic heritage.
- Bobby is a nerd and a mad scientist, grew up best friends with Raz and Lili.

I was watching videos on Psychonauts 2, specifically on the imagery and meaning behind Hollis’ mind, when I had an interesting realization: a lot of the characters in both Psychonauts games have family-related problems.
Oleander’s initial levels (the brain tumbler experiment and basic braining) don’t have much beyond initial foreshadowing for plot reasons, but meat circus is such a colossal mess of daddy issues that i think it makes up for it
Sasha’s main problems are the death of his mother and the memories of her he collected from his dad’s mind that freaked him out (nooo little german boy don’t use your psychic abilities to read your father’s mind)
Milla’s trauma has to do with her relationship to the children at her orphanage and her failure to protect them, something that while she has moved past, definitely still hurts her. She’s still working as a caretaker of some kind though, and it’s clear that she’s not eager to repeat that mistake.
Gloria was pretty seriously messed up by her mother’s emotional neglect and high expectations, her treatment at the boarding school, and her deadbeat dad. This trauma is only compounded with her mother’s suicide, which starts her downward spiral.
Fred’s problems have to do with his family legacy, literally being constantly berated in his mind by the image of his ancestor. To Fred, he’s failed at being a Bonaparte, and his ancestor has come back from the dead to express his displeasure.
Lili and Raz both have fairly complicated relationships with their fathers - Raz views Augustus as constantly pushing him in acrobatics and outright denying him his interests, while Lili has had to grow up a little too fast thanks to how busy her father is, and expresses some of that frustration with a tough front.
Loboto. (i don’t think i really need to say more. yikes doesn’t even begin to cover it)
Although Hollis’ family is notably absent from her mind, some dialogue from her and her mind’s NPCs implies a very fraught relationship with her parents. She acknowledges to Raz that “family is horrible”, and the maternity ward patients in her mind all express very bad reasons to have kids, ranging from using children as a proxy to having kids because your partner wants them. Couple that with the absence of her parents from her entire mind, and... well, it doesn’t paint a pretty picture.
Compton’s issues aren’t exactly related to his family, but they ARE hereditary. All three Booles in both games have both a connection with animals and some blastokinesis, although most of the issues seem to have skipped Sam. Dogen especially is very similar to Compton - both are socially anxious, get overwhelmed by their telepathy, and accidentally blow up heads when they get overwhelmed. It’s not hard to imagine that Compton’s parenting or influence may have had something to do with Dogen’s issues.
Ford doesn’t exactly have family issues, but boy howdy did he sure cause some.
The seed (heh) of Bob’s alcoholism seems to be related to his aunt’s alcoholism and death. His aunt dealt with her problems by drinking them away in her greenhouse, and now that Bob has gone through very similar loss, he uses the same coping mechanism - drown your issues under a lot of alcohol.
Gristol’s main problem is his overwhelming sense of entitlement, but his father plays a very significant role in his worldview. From Gristol’s perspective, his father ruined the inheritance Gristol was owed, and failed both Maligula and the country with his rule. Gristol believes he is entitled to rule of Grulovia thanks to his father, but also deeply resents him for his failures and is driven by the need to set right what he thought his father did wrong.
Nona, or Lucrecia Mux, had most of her issues brought on by the accidental killing of her sister and the false familial relationship she was deluded into believing was real her whole life. Although Maligula is the manifestation of her problems, Maligula very clearly would not exist if it weren’t for Marona’s death.
And these are just the people who’s minds we explore in some sense or another. There is the exception of Boyd, Edgar, and Helmut, but I’ll address that a bit later. None of the campers or the interns mention much about their family, but we can also infer from the way Loboto was treated that psychics are not exactly looked upon favorably. While certainly not all of the campers or interns have bad relationships with their parents, it is interesting that there is no mention that I can remember of a good parental relationship anywhere in either game. It’s either a bad relationship or it goes unmentioned (like Edgar, Boyd, and Helmut). While I can’t say definitively what this theme of complicated or bad familial relationships is intended to mean, there are a couple theories I have. It could be that Psychonauts is trying to tell us that mental illness is often a result of environment - children raised in non-loving environments rarely escape unscathed, and dealing with those issues often involves confronting that familial relationship. It could be that leaving your family trauma unresolved is very unhealthy: the only families we see recover from these issues, the Aquatos and the Zanottos, do so through honest communication. It could be that blood family does not obligate love, and that chosen families (like the psychic six or nona and augustus) are better because they actively choose to love each other. It could even be something completely unrelated that I haven’t thought of. But what I am pretty sure of is that Psychonauts 1 and 2 are definitely trying to tell us something with the family theme. What do you guys think? Is there something to this?

Update on Asks and Ko-Fi
Hello all! It's been busy, and I just want to give you all an update about what will be happening. This month I endeavor to get through my backlog of ask drafts that have been piling up. Please don't think I'm ignoring your asks, it's just taking me some time to get through them. I will be doing those who submitted asks with a username attached first, then I get to the anon asks. So, @sparkling-chi-64 @wrong-eye @thinkkirby2 @sammyblackflower @sagehyperfixates @reikiajakoiranruohoja @magicstar16 and @itchy623 , I appreciate your patience, PJ will be answering your asks and submissions soon.
Now, on the subject of my Ko-Fi, I plan to soon have all my PJ art uploaded to my gallery, so it's easier to view and access the breath of my work. If you haven't checked it out yet, I will provide a link, and request you consider giving me a donation. It will help me have more time to work on artwork. Additionally, I plan to upload WIPs or concept art for monthly memberships. If you're at all curious as to what PJ looked like before her final design, that is where you'll be able to see it when I upload it. I will announce when that gets going. I will also be starting commissions once I get set on a price scheme I'm happy with.
As a special treat, here are some WIPs of things I got cooking. Again please consider giving me a donation on Ko-Fi so I can get these done faster.

here's that other AU I've put way more into - the "Uncle Cally AU", where Cal was instead taken in by one Aquato Family Circus! This one is admittedly the brainchild of @friendlyfrankenstein, I just happened to take the ball and run... and run... and run.......
don't think this doodle dump is the start and end, though! There's a lot more coming up in the queue soon...
(alt text/image IDs under the cut!)
[Image 1 ID: A character design sheet for "Caligosto Aquato", an alternate version of Loboto who joined the Loboto Family Circus. He is wearing goggles similar to Raz's and has a full head of hair, with shaggy bangs and a light green kerchief patterned with yellow flowers. He has on a high-collared shawl cape with several safety pins and patches, over a navy-blue and white-striped Aquato family unitard and brown, puffy short-shorts with a deep red cummerbund. There are two patches on the torso of his unitard. His right arm has an elbow-length brown sleeve on his forearm with several patches and safety pins, while the left hand just has a red band around his wrist. He is wearing navy blue fingerless gloves on both hands, as well as knee-high, laced navy blue boots. There is a small knee guard on his left knee, while his left thing has a scrap of fabric tied around it, the same color and pattern as his kerchief. A detail shot shows him pushing up his goggles, revealing his green-and-red heterochromia and dark circles around his eyes. Off to the side is a design for his "Doctor Loboto" guise, wearing a simple surgical mask that covers his face, his canon-compliant shower cap, an oversized powder-blue button up, a apron over that with complex buckles in the back similar to canon, greenish surgical gloves, and the same blue boots as his "circus" design.]
[Image 2 ID: A rough sketch design for Cally's caravan. It is shaped like a carriage, with a swooped roof with a decorated lantern hanging off of it. There is a big window in the back, posters taped to the sides, and a hatch on the roof on the other side through which Cally is peeking out. There is an accordion-shaped, slightly curving tower emerging from the curved part of the roof, with a pipe weaving through and emitting a small cloud of smoke where it ends. The top of the "tower" has another, smaller window, in which Raz can be seen reading a comic and peeking outside. There is another, smaller lantern dangling from the tower, as well as what looks like a radio antennae at the very top.]
[Image 3 ID: A traditional ink doodle-page with various sketches of Loboto and other Psychonauts characters. At the center is a drawing of Uncle Cally and Augustus standing side by side. Cally is wearing large earrings and a shawl with a hood, a puffy-sleeved blouse, fabric tied around his waist like a skirt, and his usual striped tights and heeled boots. Augustus has a shawl wrapped around his neck and shoulders like a scarf, is wearing a baggy shirt with large, dangling sleeves, has a sash tied around his waist like a belt, and has his usual shorts, striped tights and boots.]
[Image 4-5 IDs: Various rough gestural sketches of Cally doing stretches, contortions and circus tricks. The first image is done digitally, while the second is traditional pen on a lavender post-it note. In one of the digital poses, a sketchy Raz can be seen balancing on top of one of Cally's feet.]
[Image 6 ID: A single-panel comic of a younger Cally and Augustus stretching. Cally is leaning against a wall with one hand, grabbing the ankle of his bent leg with the other, grinning and saying, "So is 'mooning over letters from Donatella' going in the act or something". Augustus, next to him in a deep lunge, holding a paper in one hand, blushing and glaring, retorts "Don't get on my case just because *you* don't like girls." Cally replies in turn, "You're just jealous the new strongman asked me out first".]
[Image 7 ID: A sketchy five-panel comic of Cally and the Aquato kids. In the first panel, Cally is squatting to secure a pulley on the ground, looking over at a young Raz in his circus outfit, who is staring at him. In the second, Mirtala runs by as he picks up his tools, tripping on a rock, causing a frantic Cally to catch her with a telekinetic hand; while he does, Raz is tugging on his arm, trying to get his attention. In the next panel he is bent over to pick up Mirtala, providing an opening for Frazie to spring up onto his shoulders, while Raz hangs around his legs yelling. In the next panel, Frazie is hanging off his back, sticking her tongue out at Raz, who climbs up Cally's leg pointing and shouting at Frazie, all while Mirtala fidgets in Cally's hold and Dion, shouting and holding a crying baby Queepie at arm's length, appears to the side. Cally, looking overwhelmed, screams "AUGUSTUS". The final panel shows Cally handing Mirtala over to an exhausted-looking Donatella, shouting "STOP HAVING KIDS". Augustus, standing next to Donna holding a sleeping Queepie in his arms, grins cheekily and retorts "But they're just so much fun to make".]
[Image 8 ID: A single-panel comic of Donatella and Cally. Cally is grinning, holding a terrified child upside-down by the ankles, using telekinesis to hold his arms and head in place, money falling to the ground out of his pockets. Donatella is in front of the kid, pointing and shouting, "YOU TRY TO SNEAK IN FREE, LITTLE PUNK?? THINK IT'S FUNNY DESTROYING SMALL FAMILY CIRCUS?! THAT YOU WILL ESCAPE CONSEQUENCES??" Augustus, in the background, looks on in horror.]
[Image 9 ID: Cally in the far foreground, motion-blurred and looking utterly terrified, running from Donatella in the background, who has skidded into frame in a wide stance, eyes glowing red.]
[Image 10-12 IDs: A three-panel comic of Cally, Oleander, and the Aquatos. Cally and Oleander are sitting side-by-side on a log, working on a rope-and-pulley system. Mirtala and Frazie walk in from the right side of the screen, Mirtala looking delighted and shouting, "It's Uncle Oly!! Uncle Oly's visiting!!" Oleander looks mildly surprised, while Cally looks extremely flustered. In the next panel, he catches Mirtala by the head with one hand, saying, "Woah woah *woah*-- Tala. Who told you to call him that??" Frazie, walking past behind him with a smug grin, responds, "Mom said we might as well get used to saying it sooner rather than later." In the last panel, a blushing and furious Cally says "Did she now," as he whirls around to look at Donatella, who looks incredibly smug as she stands with Queepie dangling from her hands by his arms. Off to the side, Oleander looks down in flustered confusion as Mirtala holds her arms up and shouts "UNCLE OLY UNCLE OLY WATCH MY NEW TRICK".]
[Image 13 ID: A drawing of Raz, Augustus, and Cally in the postgame of Psychonauts 2, at the cliff by the falls. Augustus is standing, staring out at the falls, with a hand on the back of Raz at his left, staring slightly up at him, and Cally to his right, sitting with his legs crossed, one arm propping him up, and the other up around his brother's back.]

"While I was searching the woods for possible specimens, I heard a distant sound of an infant crying. When I went to investigate the loud shrieking, my theory was proven correct! A small boy, who I assume must be at least 6 months old, was washed up by the river. I didn't see any traces of possible guardians or family, so I can only assume that they have perished in the river, and only this child had survived somehow. It seems my suspicions must have been correct when I found a blanket and a small toy not to far from the baby. I would have left the infant, but there was something that's keeping me from proceeding with my searching. I have decided to take the infant back to the lab with me to conduct research."
*claps hands together loudly* SO here's the au thingy I was talking 'boooouuuuuttt
BASICALLY it's about how Loboto found little baby Raz in the woods and decides to take him in! He eventually grows a soft spot for the little guy, and basically becomes his dad, and is raised with the help of Shegor and the many inmates of the Asylum!
I've never drawn Cal before, so this was quite an experiment with facial expressions and body language, also TONS of stylization. I hope I did at least an okay job.
Anyways this au might have a chokehold on me for a good while because holy shit was it fun to create
Special shoutout to my buddy @nhieeeeen who helped me with some ideas for this! They're a real one

Morceau Oleander and Cal's (Horrible) "Parents", please
OH BOY ! (<so normal)
Tumblr media
Honestly I can't go talking about Oleander without bringing up his part of the Li-Po Backstory Document, but can you really blame me? As much as that doc is so old and should be taken with a grain of salt considering the amount of contradicting information to PN2 it has, it's pretty much all we have in terms of more development for poor Morceau, so I'll take it. It provides loads of much-needed insight into Morry's character. Li-Po Doc truthers where you at!!! Rise up!!!
Tumblr media
(^screenshot relevant)
I think it's so so fucked up that the meatgrinder incident happened before Morry could prove himself to his parents. I think hearing that information while being a camp counselor at Whispering Rock, I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back, what caused him to become more cold and to start brewing his master plan. If he can't show his family, he'll show them all.
Which brings him to Cal... Caligosto & Morceau's relationship is so so interesting to me, at least from what little we've seen of it in memory vaults. The doctor *hated* psychics, that much was true, but Morry was (assumedly) a paying client. I believe for that reason Cal is able to set that difference aside, especially after hearing the plans for their project. On the other side, I think Morceau saw Cal as one of the only people who saw him as capable, someone who thought he could do great things. And maybe they could do great things together. [looks at the camera knowing the events of the game] That went well didn't it
After the cruel stunt that he pulls, I think Morry has to regain a lot of trust that the Psychonauts had in him(something he didn't know the organization had to begin with), and that includes Milla & Sasha. Morceau always thought that those two talked down so condescendingly toward him.. but I think only after the fact is when he realizes that they were both always genuine, always believed in him. That truth probably eats him alive night after night. He already had it hard before he stole those kids' brains, now he's just dug himself into a deeper trench, lost more than he had.
I don't think the Psychonauts will let him be a camp counselor again for a while. At least not until Sasha & Milla perform a few mental checkups on him, make sure he's alright. Despite everything, those two still care about him, the time they've spent together still matters to them, and I'm sure it matters to Morceau as well.
(-also as a side-hc I think All Paul was his gay awakening. I think we all know that right?)
Tumblr media
Cali's parents are a very interesting case, to say the least. There's so little we know about them it's hard to make assumptions. Nonetheless;
Having such a negative response to their son being psychic, there's some part of me that thinks this isn't the first time this has happened in their family's bloodline. A family with "Loboto" as their last names, after all, might not be just a coincidence. And especially considering the father IS a doctor himself, I wonder what could've set him down that career path. It's food for thought, you know?
We can't really know much about what the mother's profession was, but what I think is that she was an artist of some kind. The tiny replica of the house & the flowers painted on it, the little stitched dolls representing the family? If we're to believe that Cal's entire memory vault in RoR is based on her work that he remembers, he must've had a strong relationship with her before she deemed him an unnatural monster. This could also explain why Cal decides to wear a floral pattern shower cap too. It'd be a little sad to know he might still hold love for his parents who treated him like a monster & lobotomized him because of powers he didn't ask for.
(honestly if anyone could add onto this part that'd be great, I have so much trouble coming up with anything for these guys + I HATE them very much, fuck these "parents")

Am I the only one who likes the idea of the Psychonauts becoming Caligosto's found family and providing him with the love, support, guidance, and understanding his shitbag parents never gave him?
Because as this point, I've realized that he needs A LOT than just an "Employee of the Year" Award and a tropical vacation. He needs a safe place where he can be surrounded by people who'll love him unconditionally; people who will stick up for him and not make him feel disposable or like a freak. And I feel that the Psychonauts can provide that.
After all, as a certain witch once said, "Us weirdos have to stick together."
you're definitely not alone in that thought I can assure you that, lots of ppl love the thought of bringing Cal on board into the psychonauts in a more meaningful way after the games conclude
I definitely think he needs something like that, he's gonna be directionless and stressed for a while now that hes both seen that his actions have consequences but also that hes been stuck doing the same bad things w/barely an exit sign outta there
i hope sasha and milla find him back at camp, and bring him back in maybe on his own accord, or at least on friendlier terms than grab him psychically bc otherwise this underwater base will eXPLODE him

Since I got notes on that one post, here are my thoughts on how the main villains of the Psychonauts series relate to Raz. I'll try my best to be clear and succinct.
Psychonauts 1 - Morceau Oleander, Raz's parallel
The first thing we really start to learn about Raz is that he feels like an outsider in his family because he's psychic. This, and that he wants to become a hero so he can prove his worth.
Cut to later in the game, where we learn that Oleander felt worthless to his family, wanting to join the army/air force/navy/etc to prove to his family that he's not worthless. This is the reason he joins the Psychonauts.
We learn through Raz's interactions with Ford how his father hates psychics and was possibly trying to kill him with all the circus training. This is later shown to be Raz's misconception, and that Augustus loves his children and is doing what he thinks is best to protect them.
And then through Oly, we find out that his dad killed his favorite rabbit, claiming that they're good for nothing but food. And Oleander understands that because of his small size, he too is good for nothing, fearing the day his dad turns his butcher's knife on him. While it's not explicitly stated in the game, it's pretty easy to infer that Oleander is wrong and his dad isn't the monster he sees him as.
Speaking of monsters... The final bosses of the game are Oleander's dad, Raz's dad, and Oleander & Raz's dad (twice). Oleander & Raz are so much the same person that their greatest fears can combine seamlessly. They both see their dads as evil caricatures of the real thing with teal/green skin and actively trying to murder them.
Oleander is Raz's future if he were unable to patch things up with his father/family.
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin - Caligosto Loboto, Raz's fear
By now, we've already learned all we need to about Raz at this time, so there's nothing new told to us in this game. What is revealed is Loboto's backstory, specifically focusing on his parents.
We get to see a dollhouse recreation of Loboto's childhood. Here, through Loboto's eyes, it's shown how his parents feared/hated what Loboto was. They refer to him as "devil child" and "little monster." We see the parents discuss Loboto and make the decision to have him lobotomized. While his mom is initially concerned the procedure will hurt him, she ends up stating that she doesn't care.
This is always done while Loboto is within earshot, whether the parents realize it or not.
The only time his parents are shown interacting with him positively is when Loboto is only an infant and before they knew he was psychic. They like the idea of him, not who he really is. This is what Raz believed his family felt about him, and now he gets to see what that actually looks like.
Loboto's life is Raz's nightmare.
(I realize this is shorter than the others, but we don't get a ton of canon info about Loboto)
Psychonauts 2 - Gristol Malik, Raz's opposite
(I've posted about this before btw)
Now this one is especially interesting to me, because, unlike the previous villains, these two characters have almost nothing in common.
Again, by this time, we've already learned much about Raz & his past, but wait! Now there's stuff to be added. Towards the beginning of the game, we get to meet Raz's family and see their dynamic for ourselves. We also get a little more insight into how they live.
After three games total, we can easily jot down a ton of information about Raz. For starters; he is psychic, is poor, has a rough-but-close relationship with his family, is mature for his age (or at least tries to be), genuinely cares for others & enjoys helping them, highly admires the Psychonauts, and can be a little reckless but is usually trying to do the right thing.
Again, unlike with the previous two, we don't get a proper introduction to the villain until the climax. (Yes, he's there the whole time, but pretending to be someone else and we barely hear anything about his true identity, especially if you're not looking at the tiny details.)
But, in true Psychonauts fashion, when we met Gristol, we get to know everything about him. And very nearly everything we learn directly contrasts with Raz. For example; he is a non-psychic, is extremely rich, has no positive relationship with his family (or really anyone else), is immature, doesn't care about others & only cares about what he wants, despises the Psychonauts, and tries to be calculated in his decisions while not caring who gets hurt in the process.
Just about the only thing these two characters share is their Grulovian blood.
Gristol is Raz's foil and the only villain he couldn't help.
Final thoughts
Every single one of these villains is so well thought out in relation to Raz. I hesitate to say which is the "best" villain of the series because I think they all have their part and each plays it perfectly. I also have to mention that none of the villains feel like recycled versions of another villain, each having a unique role and motivation.
