i havent actually thought this much about this. i personally think her in the pilot vs her in promening was like. not really a Whole big difference but like...the fact that lizzy now has access to v set her off. shes always been a little unsettling, a little fucking deranged but maybe something happened between ep 1 and 3 thatr was like. lizzy came to her like... hey, one of the disassembly drones came by my bunk the other day. was this the one? (shows doll a pic) and doll just FUcking Loses it . i think she was actively vengeful during the pilot too but YES like ur saying its almost a .grounding thing. everyone here is real and alive. and then at the end of the day she has to go back and face dozens upon dozens upon dozens of corpses that are there because of HER and its liike. idk i imagine shes 18-22 . shes young as hell. and that FUCKS WITH YOU. this is doll to me:

they know damn well her parents are dead but she's just under being eerie enough that no one really suspects her for anything going on. she's relatively normal around lizzy & not aggressive but not outgoing with other students. like to everyone, shes just a normal kid who lost her parents. plenty of kids have lost their parents, considering the murder drones lurking *right outside the bunker.*

i think she would get tired. yeah. she held onto the all consuming debilitating hatred for these genocidal war machines that killed her parents and countless others. then heartbeat happens, and suddenly people are Okay with them??? that would fucking set her OFF. so long, so fucking long shes been holding onto her anger and not being able to do anything about it . BUT NOW SHE CAN. ough ok but then theres those conflicting feelings bcos of uzi. u can see in promening she has SOME sense of... for lack of a better word, humanity in how she treats uzi (hell even tossing lizzy out of the way when she started killing people.) i think she picks and choses who she cares about and then is usually consistent in how she treats them. basically; dont get on her bad side. she's conflicted at the end of ep3 after learning uzi has the solver; but uzi is siding with the murder drones and thats HER loss for being SCHTUPIDDDDDDDD!!!! but then again, she finally has someone who understands what shes going through... but also AUGH..! i have to kill v i HAVE to kill v ive gotten so far i cant give up now FUCK!!!! FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!! i think there would be so much of her being conflicted between uzi knows what i feel. but also uzi is siding with the bitch who killed my fucking parents. i think she would just spiral and spiral until dead end comes along and she has a decision to make. and she makes it. and uzi is Fucked and v is Fucked and n and tessa are FUCKEd AND OK TYHIS IS GETTING LONG IM DONE

i am mad at this tiktok trend of video essay recommendations, and not just because i have a very very intense special interest in video essays and youtube commentary. -___- guyssss, a video essay does not have to be scary or unsettling to be a GOOD video essay. all of yalls reccs are like, 20-something minute videos about "gadagoobies left toe: a creepypasta turned real" and tbh thats like, a sphere of video 'essay'. imma say it, and imma be a lil time-elitist here, but 20 minutes is a video, not a video essay. if youve chosen a topic, and said topic cannot fill more than like half an hour, consider me unimpressed in either your research skills or topic choice. not to mention, again, horror internet video essays are like fuckin, 1/10th of the video essays out there. show me breadtube video essays, movie video essays, whatever the hell Jenny Nicholson is doing, Ro Ramdin, Contrapoints??

do yall want me to show you my spreadsheet O___O ill show u my fuckin spreadsheet, theres so much more out there besides your half furry sprites talking about internet horror from 2011 for 23 minutes.

my reccs? literally anything by Ladyknightthebrave. she has very very in depth and emotional video essays about media, including a big focus on holocaust media as she is Jewish. her Jojo Rabbit/The Book Thief video makes me cry EVERY time, and i cry like ten times a year. ough, she has a video about Cowboy Bebop that focuses SO MUCH on the music! A video essay about a bad holocaust movie where she literally interviews holocaust expertsss! Her video on MASH made me go watch the whole thing, same with Stargate. and gods, her video about Fleabag blew me away. just pleeease go check ANY of her videos out.

Jenny Nicholson. you want random? she's got it. she has a video where she reviews every single Land of Time movie, and theres a LOT of those. She deep dives into the brony fandom. etc etc. i know she's popular but still, theres a reason for that.

Contrapoints. absolutely gorgeous video making about politics, self, etc. and she's queer as hell, amazing. I just can't describe the depth she puts into her videos.

FDSignifier. a huge part of breadtube (or leftist youtube) who makes a lottt of excellent video essays on black masculinity. Big, full videos, with a good perspective to see if you are a white viewer.

CJ the X just has a ton of excellent video essays as well. They are very intellectual.

Ro Ramdin, my gods, most of her videos are not what i would call video essays, but she tows the line. Emotional, funny, to the point, amazingly shot, and compassionate to the bone.

i probably have more but here's my point, branch out, dont put non-horror video essays down. we get it, you watch gore on liveleak and draw ur edgy fursona with scars all over them. (was that harsh? sorry, just uhhh please consider perspective and the culture of creepypasta/horror online being a cesspool of self harm via forcing ones self to watch upsetting things)

if i could just say something genuinely kinda wild thats been on my mind. fuckin Months ago me and my roommate watched "dont worry darling" the value mart stepford wives movie with harry styles that everyone has likely forgotten entirely about by now. and its not good. shocker. BUT my controversial take today is that the scene at the party where harrys character is up doing some manic fucking tapdance waving his arms around while his wife has a breakdown somewhere is wildly effective and i still think of it to this day long after the memory of every other detail from that film has faded from my mind.

the whole fucking movie, not a crumb of believable emotion on that mans face, and then out of nowhere hes up there frantic and sweaty and moving like a half broken puppet on a string and for the first and only time in a two hour runtime im fuckin Feeling something. and that paired with chris pines giving his cult-leader-like monologue beside him feels so raw and unsettling and that energy between them, the dead-eyed determination on his face, actually works as decent foreshadowing for the twist reveal.

however stupid i found that reveal, im just still kinda obsessed with this one scene. and like theres something about him being the one to play it: harry styles, this super celebrity who is so obviously only in this role to be a pretty face that brings in a broader audience. knowing that and watching him contort himself in a parody of joyous revelry at the command of an onlooking puppetmaster for the entertainment of an equally brainwashed audience is like! idk maybe ive got my conspiracy theory goggles on abt this one but its doing Something!

SPONTANEOUS MINI REVIEW BECAUSE I REALIZED THAT I HAVENT FUCKING TALKED ABOUT FRAGMENTARY PASSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok so. i actually really liked this one!

so uh. if you witnessed that incredibly long thread i made yelling about kh3 you will know that i. am not a fan of the look of modern kh. i think its kind of uninteresting compared to the delightfully cartoony style and just generally i dont like more realistic looks to games that already had a unique visual identity.

so im here to say that i think it works for 0.2! im a good way through kh3 and i dont think it works well there and ill get to that when i eventually review that game but. in 0.2 i think the new style fits the more dark tone very nicely, and the enviornments are absolutely gorgeous. like i came out of ddd thinking absolutely nothing could top symphony of sorcery in terms of world design and was proven wrong. the realm of darkness is my new favorite kh "world". for my mutuals who havent played kh, look at this!!! its absolutely gorgeous

and the environments are actually my favorite thing about this game. besides being beautiful, theyre also delightfully trippy and unsettling. theres a section where you have to climb up a seemingly never ending staircase, and every time you reach what you think is the top you hear aquas worst thoughts. a lot of the areas are twisted, destroyed versions of worlds seen in bbs. its very dark (fitting, for the realm of darkness) and honestly its a treat to just walk around admiring the view. the visual storytelling is as good as kh ever gets.

i briefly mentioned aquas thoughts a minute ago so ill bring them up again, her commentary adds a lot to the desolate atmosphere, and this game really feels like a character study. it shows her desperation, her worst thoughts, her hope despite everything, and its just genuinely good. i havent been able to say that about khs character writing since like. days. its GOOD.

i am. not a fan of bbs' writing. i think its got a good underlying concept with absolutely terrible execution, and it makes me wonder at times if the things i like about it were intentional or not. but this game takes the best written character of bbs and gives her more depth than they ever could before. i can say with confidence that aqua is one of the best characters in the series, and a lot of it is because of this game.

the tone here is very gloomy, but thats not really a complaint because the game is so short. the depressing atmosphere isnt too much to bear because youre barely in it for more than 2 hours. and i think that run time is EXACTLY long enough. it goes for exactly as long as it needs to tell the story and still give a moment to breathe.

as for gameplay. im not the biggest fan of the updated system. i like to think im open to change with kh's combat. i think the command deck has potential and the card system in com was fun and i actually liked days' panel system. but something about the way this new version of the system feels to play is just. unsatisfying. hits dont feel like they have any weight to me, and spells feel inconsequential despite being more grandiose than ever. its just not as good as it was before, and like its a sort of half assed replacement of reaction commands. the way they incorporated style changes into it was okay, but again its not as satisfying as it was in bbs. but maybe it was just satisfying in bbs because the rest of the combat there sucked

tldr, the things i care about in a game (writing and visuals) were fucking spectacular, but the gameplay definitely had room to improve. also if i ever have to fight a darkside again ill throw up and cry! 8/10, though im tempted to raise it to a 9 for the environments alone

nah but fr tho i DO actually have quite a few thoughts on how isles fits in to the overall narrative of mianite being such a strange offshoot compared to s1 and s2 read more if u want, i will say that its gonna get rambly and also im going to drop a few of my design notes about the isles gods specifically if that interests you

i have been piecing together lore via friends and the mianite wiki (which is a fucking dumpster fire for anyone that's trying to look for a specifics in lore but i digress) so not everything people may care about will feature in here (like the whole light/dark thing. gandus, she shadows, w/e im just focusing on the overall story. sorry but there is only so much i can handle atm) i DO actually think that isles is really interesting despite my initial dislike for it towards the end (yes yes ik but i can admit that i was a little. too indulgent of myself at the time) ANYWAY i think isles was some sort of like... fucked up puzzle box reality???? of the s1 world because there are just SO many references to s1 like ianites heart being stolen and dianite slowly becoming more demon-like and all those theories way back when of isles really being s-1 like its a prequel of s1 world which i think its semi true?? basically my thoughts are; isles is an offshoot mimic world intended to emulate the life of the s1 gods in their youth for whatever reason, and in their timeloop is trying to create a trap? a new world? essentially perfect the mannerisms and legitimacy of a real realm like the realm of mianite and the realm of ruxomar. why tom n jordan got pulled into it interrupting the timeloop for a moment, who knows. (also in reflection? thats so fucked up and rude to karl like king is trapped in a timeloop for no goddamn reason) the 4th god is weird tho and i hated every minute of it stop trying to make trio into 4 challenge (impossible, apparently) i choose to believe that the 4th god thing only happened because of fucked up timeloop interruption consequence ONTO MY DESIGN NOTES

so. you probably noticed that their hands have visible joints like a doll or a marionette puppet. that is entirely intentional bc i legit think the isles gods are not real and instead constructs made with to have god-like powers. (shameless plug to the og post here if you wanna see every design ive made of the gods layed out all at once)

each design is supposed to be just a little uncanny like with all of them having pupils compared to the s1 and s2 gods who i draw them without. their smiles are a little too wide to match with their eyes. the green and red of ianite and dianite's eyes are a little too bright and noxious. overall i really wanted them to look as unsettling as possible if you imagine them limp and slumped over like a broken doll and theyre all dressed in something that is a little too perfect you know? like mianite looks like a friend you meet in the town square, ianite looks like a damsel princess, dianite is a handsome prince, like theyre all dressed a little too royal from a classic fairytale-- theyre too good to be true.

augh i think i have more to say but theres already so much in this one post that ill save it for another time

dinosaurs are one of my biggest special interests. tf2 is probably getting close as well. i will now ramble endlessly about my thoughts, assigning those old men dinosaurs and you're all gonna listen. also, this is based like...99% off of the characters, not taking gameplay stuff into account. it probably makes less sense in that scenario

so, i COULD be boring and bland and predictable and say Scout would fit a Velociraptor...and im gonna. theyre small, agile, a middle ground between labrador levels of dumb and raven levels of smart. relies on others around him to succeed, and i think he deserves to be small and fluffy ^_^

Medic, i think, wouldnt be a dinosaur at all. instead, i see him as a pterosaur! more specifically, Quetzalcoatlus. absolutely massive, terrifying and unsettling to look at, probably more dangerous than it looks (and it looks dangerous). something about it just looks right for him

Pyro's choice is 50% for the name: a Pyroraptor. i also think its cute how striking the resemblance would be with Scout as a Velociraptor: pretty similar in size, build, matching silly levels!! theres also something about the "looks cute, seems cute, moves like a deadly predator, kills like something far worse" kinda deal going on here

Sniper is also technically not a dinosaur! Deinosuchus, an absolutely huge crocodilian, just felt. correct. while not very australian (i actually considered a Minmi for a while!), there is just no choice. big crocodile, patient hunter, strange and offputting. probably bites

Heavy, who i almost dubbed a Borealopelta, is SUCH good Therizinosaurus material. massive, terrifying weapons (im aware that recent study/s suggest their claws werent used for combat. i simply do not care ^_^), but absolute softies. Therizinosaurus was a strict herbivore (contrary to first thoughts after its discovery!), and i think the contrast in appearance vs behavior lines up kinda nice

no explanation needed. look at the image. need i say more. assigning anything besides a Pachycephalosaurus to Engie is just wrong. enjoys play fighting with Pyro and knocking them down (gently) a lot

pretty privilege: the animal. like Microraptor: not very big, probably annoying, weirdly ruthless. spilling anything on them would result in a very slow head turn that signals your incoming demise. has learned to take advantage of Engie's big ass head: he cant actually feel that thing. perfect place to crouch on without causing alarm

i struggled the most with Demo because nothing seemed like...obvious to me? i have very little to say abt this one, i picked Suchomimus based purely off of vibes. i imagined it and it made sense

Soldier has two options, one is funnier than the other. primarily, i'd see him as a Daspletosaurus! one of the smaller tyrannosaurs, still very big though (~8ft tall, ish?). alternatively, i can NOT get the idea of him as a Protoceratops out of my HEAD. small ("small" is relative here. think of like...a really large dog), probably barks for fun, loves digging holes, has every disease

if i could draw with a mild level of skill, i'd be drawing them all day. they mean everything to me. im imagining them so much and its doing wonders for my mind. (also, the scaling off the animals + mercs in these images are not accurate in the slightest, thats just how it turned out)

i'd talk about them for HOURS if i could

i still need to finish silent hill 2 but theres genuinely something so grossly beautiful about how it tells its story. like even when im frustrated bcs the game fucking hates me or im lost or when im joking theres just something so enthralling about the world.

the narrative is so fucking impactful that it doesnt need you to take it seriously. you can howl with laughter after blasting past a laying figure on the street with the funniest visual glitch ever and the game still makes you feel the same dread it doesnt need you to be genuinely scared all the time because its such an uncomfortable experience by default that it still keeps you unsettled. even when you are distracted

like i knew i was safe in The One Part In The Museum but i was still scared shitless!! i still ran down there like shaking because it was fucking scary! it was completely safe but that didn't fucking matter!! and silent hill managed to do that through NEARLY NOTHING!!! a few enemies that are easy to take care of and a weird room! thats it!

n dont get me started on character. i love the characters so much

ABSOLUTELY

this is prob in the early phases

(feral) 2D

-he 100% has a switchblade collection, and he always has at least 1 on him

-he uses them for everything, like literally this man has opened pop cans with them

-ya know how he was studying law before he joined the band? yea well he puts that to good use, he does illegal shit and then knows how to get away with it, hes gotten out of jail so many times

-murdoc yelled at him when he had a bad migraine once and he broke his nose (again)

-he has this general unsettling aura around him? he can be super nice and sweet and he does genuinely care for people, but also with being 6'2 and having blood filled eyes you kinda gain this vibe of "oh god"

-arson obsession, no joke has started a fire in his room

-he really enjoys graffiti, thats already cannon but like he has cans upon cans if spray paint in his room

-he does infact go out with a lot of people, he knows hes attractive and its a dangerous thing

-he zones out a lot, but no one ever knows where hes looking so again he just gets an unsettling aura around him

-he has bitten people in fights, and will continue to do so

-bites people just for fun, the funny thing is is that theres a blank space at the front where his front teeth should be

-this isnt really feral but he learned how to whistle through his missing teeth

-he likes small knives and blunt force objects for fighting more then anything, he has a bat in his room that he keeps by his bed

-his walk is really quite so he sometimes scares people by just appearing

-he was like this when he was a teen to, hes always been just a little bit insane

(ok now im gonna slip my own character in because i can)

-2D and Pumpkin (i have a post about him if you want to read it) steal shopping carts together and race them

-theyre pretty much partners in crime, one of them is doing something stupid you know the other one is there to help

-both of them have sucky vision (2D with the 8ball fractures, Pumpkin with having a literal pumpkin stuck on his head) so a lot of the time the chaos they cause doesnt go as planned

-both dumpster dive, doesnt matter that 2D is in a famous band, they both dumpster dive

-when they get high, oh god its like chaos squared but they both have to little coordination to pull it off

-so they end up stumbling around and maniacally laughing when the other falls

-2D ate spray paint once, he was just curious

-his mouth was orange for a week

-Pumpkins head can come off so him and 2D are seen commonly throwing it at eachother

-both are like 6'2 and like hanging out at night, so seeing them hanging around and spray painting a back alley is a little terrifying

-they wont jump you or do anything but they will stare at you until you leave

-they both steal street signs on the regular, both of there rooms are coated in them

Those are most of my headcannons around feral 2D, hes kinda just phase 1-3 2D but in more deapth.

For Few Can Take a Broken World (and Still with Beauty Fill it)

so, back in august, @fogwitchoftheevermore and i had a concept for a fic centered around the clones of Mezalea and the concept of them being a bit of a (true) ghost story told in the mesas of tumble town

it was intended to be three sets of paired chapters, one focusing around a season 2 character followed one about their season 1 counterpart in each pair of chapters--jimmy, fwhip, and joel.

it never got finished, and it never will at this point, but i think itd be a shame if we never shared what we did have written, so thats what this post is! we had a lot, so head under the cut to actually read them <3

Jimmy s2

Jimmy has lived in dry areas his whole life, and you pick up on some interesting things, such as a rather unique dialect of sign language that only varies in specific finger motions between the desert and the mesa

Theres some interesting folklore in the mesas, as well

Where most places would blame half-built and incomprehensible structures on the elusive herobrine, mesa-dwellers tell a different story

terracotta people, once part of a beautiful empire, now lost and without purpose, wandering the mesa until either the end of time, or when the magic that sustains them finally fades

Don’t go out too late, elders warn, lest you encounter one of these ghosts. who knows what they might do. Those who've seen them say they’re harmless, just wandering, aimlessly and wordlessly, but no one knows where they came from or why they all share one man's face.

Jimmy runs across one of the clones one night

It calls him the codfather

Jimmy recognizes some weird variation of the sign for fish

Despite its hands having less joints than that of an actual human, the mesa’s sign language is perfectly accessible to the clone. weird

He is very confused

"i mean this is the middle of a fucking desert but sure i can try and get you some????"

it just keeps insisting "you are the codfather" and he gets Very Weirded Out at the fact that this weird doll keeps trying to call him a fish person.

this is almost worse than being called a toy.

Jimmy s1

Mezalea is one of the only places Jimmy is comfortable taking off his head

After all, the clones aren’t truly sentient, and even if they were, its still Joel, right?

The clones aren’t unsettling at all haha why would you suggest such a thing

Jimmy is fairly certain the man isnt entirely sane. But hes not unkind and Lizzie loves him and despite his slightly overinflated ego, Jimmy considers him a good friend.

fWhip s2

Jimmy tells him, as his number 2 deputy, there's some Weird Shit about the mesa he should probably know

Aka the clay people. They’re not aggressive, in fact, they somehow seem almost sad, but they’re still scary as shit

Fwhip runs into one despite the warning anyway

The fact that it looks strikingly like Joel isn’t the first thing he notices. The first thing he notices is that they’re building some sort of… something. It looks like a sort of tower with a rounded top, he doesn’t quite get it.

The second thing he notices is that it looks strikingly like Joel.

Or, sort of? Those are Joel’s eyes, and the general shape of his face and body, but this clay person doesn’t have a beard and it’s much smaller than Joel (still, comparatively to Fwhip, very tall, but we don’t have to talk about that)

The clay person is just as confused as Fwhip is when they first see each other

Fwhip gives it some sort of greeting (cause I mean, they are just people, right?) and it perks up in a strange way

It walks closer to him and starts making a sign with its hands. He doesn’t quite recognize it, Jimmy has started teaching him the mesa’s sign language but he’s not very good at it yet. He recognizes that the sign for gunpowder is in there somewhere, and one of the signs feels very familiar, but that’s about all he gets.

The clay man is trying to ask him “are you Fwhip?” but it’s not communicating correctly at all

Fwhip tries to ask if they need something, if they want to go see the sheriff, and it nods at the mention of Jimmy, so he takes them back to Tumble Town

Jimmy is very confused about why Fwhip brought it here, and when it starts trying to say “you are the codfather” he tells Fwhip that the ones he’s run into have been making those hand signs at him but he hasn’t figured out what it means

Neither of them quite know what to do with this person and kinda decide to just… let them go and hope they figure out what they need to do

fWhip s1

Unsettling mention of the fountain statues being approximately just as sentient as the other clones, despite having extremely limited joint movement. “Elaborate on that.” “no”

The clones’ sign for Fwhip’s name is a mix between the signs for redstone and gunpowder

Fwhip didn’t learn that many of the signs because he didn’t run into them very often. Gem and Pixl are both not exactly happy about his usage of blood sacrifice, but it's all his own blood, so they can't actually justify stopping him, only just voicing Disapproval

He crafts each clone with care

They shatter, sometimes. Terracotta is strong, but it’s brittle.

Builders, messengers, trade managers, statues, cleaners, warriors

Each especially is formed slightly different

(killing yourself that much, even knowing you’ll come right back, is not exactly great for your psyche)

(there's a reason Pixl asks him to stop making him add candles to the Vigil, a pained undercurrent to the voice he tries to keep light, every time he visits)

The first he made had defined middle and index fingers, despite the two being fused together

It was kinda weird and unsettling though, so he started making them into one slightly wider finger

He went back to the original design eventually, his grip on his sanity slipping just enough for him to find it funny instead of creepy

They already shared his face after all

The Mother Tree accepts his blood freely, and gives life to the clay dolls all the same

The explosion that destroys the Palace also kills the Mother Tree

However, the servants were always built in such a way that they could outlast their creators

Otherwise, older clones would die the moment Joel sacrificed himself to make a new one

When joel died, the clones lost their way

They weren't actually sentient, after all, only having a very rudimentary sort of magical artificial intelligence

So while they could talk, and recognize people, and take orders from their King

(their Creator)

(their God)

They had no true higher thought

And could only fulfill the purposes they were created for

(the Messenger servants were the first to fall, though the ones meant to send messages to wetter climates, to lizzie and scott and jimmy, were more durable and stood longer)

(the Statues never moved, as they were never built to. They remain buried under the dunes of what was once mezalea. Maybe one day they will once again be displayed as a sign of their Creators might)

(after thousands of years, only the Builders still wandered the earth)

(yet still they were always drawn to mesas)

(it is all they knew, after all)

(and the heat of the desert sun would keep moisture from cracking them from the inside out)

(after all, a broken clone is of no use to its King)

(without their Creator to guide them, their builds had no direction)

(simple structures that only the most dedicated archeologists may even have the hope of recognizing as fragments of the old Mezalean build style)

kotoko autism. vibrates until i fucking explode.

i have so much absolutely nonsensical evidence for this. she's absolutely abominable socially. the only times she has genuine conversations with the non-younger members of milgram is when shes talking nonstop about justice or the justice system. or her training (special interests). she doesnt seem to understand social cues or intent. she has an intense frustration at the world as a whole.

she canonically looks scary/accidentally unsettles people all the time- even unintentionally. shes constantly blunt. she plans things out and becomes easily frustrated and prone to anger when that plan or routine goes awry. rejection sensitive dysphoria. she did well enough in school to get into a well-known law faculty, but then either dropped out or took a break ("GIFTED KID" BURNOUT, KOTOKO? DID YOU BECOME FRUSTRATED AT THE SYSTEM THAT ONLY WANTS TO EXPLOIT YOU, KOTOKO? I FUCKING KNOW YOUR REASONS FOR TAKING A BREAK RUN FAR DEEPER THAN "Theres Something I Wanted To Do", YOU ASSHOLE.)

she also exhibits 4 billion other symptoms (anxiety, paranoia, easy anger, lack of self care, isolation, seeing herself as a "monster", etc etc) including these that could be comorbid with literally 43858492 other possible brain disorders and trauma that would make her go through 500 mental health professionals before autism even gets mentioned. she would stare at her autism diagnosis and then start breaking down over the surreal feeling of being diagnosed with autism as an adult and then having to recontextualise your entire life with that new information.

i also tend to project even more autism on her but thats not important (aversion/sensitivity to sound, aversion to touch, low empathy or sympathy swag, stimming by haha wag foot like dog wag tail, bland or easy food autism, executive dysfunction. more.)

going to talk about some personal qualms about role play in general with Minecraft as the backdrop. If thats not your jam, you understandably disagree or have your own opinions, well, this discussion is for me to organize my own thoughts on it so you can either disregard this post entirely or view it as a spectacle for your own gain, or whatever the case… I shall dive in now.

Qsmp is my first heavy role play server and I have to say in general I really despise role play. However in trying to state what I dislike theres a lot of things to it, somethings that are technically role-play that I do enjoy verses that which I dont.

there is what I will call ‘natural roleplay’ that occurs in a natural sense. Characters aren’t necessarily ‘really’ in the situation but they play into it by the feed back or for the fun of it. This is something that happens in real life, it particularly happens in areas of high stress as a playful way to navigate or center people in a chaotic world. An example of this (there are many examples in the life series but im going to choose for this ) the clockers from limited life. Now they weren’t really a ‘family’ but they played into being a family because it was funny because it bonded them while dealing with the high stress parameters of the server. Which leads me to my next set of role play which I adore which I'm going to call ‘elements’.

Now elements are any set of rules/mechanics that is what gaming is. There are stakes, ways to win and lose and actions and reactions can seamlessly flow into natural role play. Theres a genuineness to it as you play that your outcome is determined by your merit, skill, wit, charisma, luck, your agency. Because it is so genuine life itself sets the stage on wether you are smart or ignorant, abled or disabled, skilled or unskilled. Life sets the ‘uncontrollables’ while you the player navigate the stage props that are ‘elements’ decided by the host.

Those two example’s of role play are what I can enjoy now for role play I really cant stomach. Now I was an actor for 2 decades before falling ill, I can very much enjoy scripted work however ‘scripted role play’ is my absolute beloathed. For me it falls into the uncanny valley of storytelling and I just hate it. If there is the parameters of everything being a dream I can do it, but with out that statement my pleasure in said material plummets to the ground. Reason being is that the content is rife with contradictions and stakes that are set to whoever's controlling the stories whimsy which can completely assassinate characters to fit to these ideals. I think in part I really hate this because I have a language disability that while making language difficult for me I became hyper attuned to things like lying. There are pitches and inflections that come about from lying and not lying and very very few people can act appropriately when they need to for the story they are weaving which is unsettling for me to many degrees. And very often I know the ‘twist’ the creator has set up too far in advance. There is also the issue for me that when in choosing options for yourself its too absurd degrees because the ‘sky’ is the limit, however thats not really the case because most people write the same story over and over, either being a cartoonish hero or cartoonish villain that’s reminiscent of playing pretend with 4 year olds (and then my laser shoots you, ah! But I survive because I have a nuclear blaster and I shoot you-etc.)

all that to say I find it boring and tired. Now completely confined scripted works means that the author has set stakes for the characters and they can act and react accordingly (results depending upon an author’s skill varies) but characters tend to make sense and because no person is behind each character individually characters are free to be flawed without it being silly and free to consequences without it trying to be stopped because the difference between a play and role play is that people in a play are trying to tell A story while role-players are each telling Their story. With so many tellers it can become the adage ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ for me.

so thats the general outline of what Id like to discuss now for the applied principles in regards to the qsmp itself.

I have stayed enjoying as long as I have for the qsmp because there are a lot of elements and natural rp within it, which is and has been expertly crafted by Quackity himself. The eggs are an example of elements (they are vulnerable having two lives and if they die they are cast out from the series) and natural role play (we’ll use charlie here as he is the most extreme in his rp) while Charlie may act reckless for a fun gimmick of natural role play because the elements are real the effects from losing a character from his behavior, his actions leads his character to handle grief and remorse. while he does do this as a ‘character’ there are genuine feelings that he allows to lead his natural role play, ‘going to kill all the other eggs’ in grief while would be extreme behavior for real life and is a larger then life sort of sentiment it is still a real sentiment. This behavior can be exhibited time and time again for humans in the ‘if I cant have happiness neither can you’.

now it is certainly risky setting up an element in which you both need to care for and can lose a player because while the highs of those elements are incredible the lows are extreme and you end up losing more then the players that died to elements, you lose all that were attached to them as the emotions are too strong and too real to navigate for most individuals. The brilliance of the eggs though is that there simplicity and needs are understandable across language barriers and because they act as children they also provide access for language learners to start their journey as well, as players that interact with them will speak more simply and delicately giving nursery rhymes and explaining concepts that allow for beginner language learners an easier introduction to the language. There is a lot of reason and success in the qsmp that’s absolutely brilliant full stop.

For the things that make me cringe or fall apart are the more ‘scripted rp’ aspects. I think q!quackity suffers from this most acutely. I really wish quackity had set himself up as a villain/more admin character from the jump. He as a creator knows too much and its hard to watch him play ignorant and angsty when he feels so detached and displaced story wise. My biggest problems with the server are the overall mechanics and world building. I think there is a solid interesting story there but it can only be accessed when the heavens deem it so and respectfully it sucks so much to me.

‘find luffy’ ‘find the eggs’ the admins playing those characters aren’t physically on the server there is no way to find them, which we the audience, and the content creators know but how can they act out as they would ‘naturally’ when there goal is physically unattainable, you cant, which then when mixing the fandom into it they extrapolate and make strange character dives ‘no ones looking for quackity’ ‘no ones looking for roier’ there’s literally nothing players can do to find them so of course theyre not looking but suddenly it’s angst and ‘these poor characters no one cares from them’, like I said uncanny valley of storytelling I don’t like.

I did understand right from the get go this would be an issue as the set up of being trapped on the island, being the minecraft server itself, was a very peculiar plot device as it serves basically the opposite of what you would want for your players. ‘You cant leave the island!’ Uh what if they dont log in? Theyve escaped, there free! had there been an actual island in game that if they tried to escape from there could be consequences ( while perhaps difficult to dm/manage (though you could make some cool commands/effects that could do a lot for you) I think story wise this narrative could have been soo much more compelling and not just players having to willingly submit themselves to torture while saying they dont want the torture and to be free for the plots sake.

just putting this out here too but Ive hated Dapper’s kidnappings so much. He is probably hands down my favorite character and the amount of character assainations they have had to jump through for ✨plot✨🙄. I can understand the motivation for kidnapping Dapper as his Father is highly contested and Dapper is a vulnerable point for Bad but I really need characters to put in the effort like Charlie did. that was entertaining and intense and every character involved got a great dramatic story. Any other time when he’s been ‘magically’ obtained it feels like a filler episode to me and my eyesroll into the back of my skull.

another point about scripted rp is that the further it goes the more effort put in and the less time you play because it would mess up story continuity and in general just because a pile of angst plots, I just dont find appealing, and I know the creators put in a lot of work (that deserves praise) and there are very clearly people that really appreciate that content and absolutely great for them, happy their getting content they enjoy but for me it’s lackluster.

to the point of ‘well if you dont like it then dont watch’ as stated there are plenty of things I like about qsmp but also I try to watch things I don’t understand and don’t enjoy at times as research to learn what others enjoy and see in it to further my own understanding and compassion. I may never like it fully but if I can understand why others do I can better support and encourage there interests and I very much like that, people are great and its nice to share thoughts and feelings. because I do have what I feel is more outsider/anti? views in general on this subject then most of the fandom Ive felt the need to compile some thoughts from my perspective of it, now done I think I’ll go back to hibernating until a next thought.

cicero misery is honestly one of my favorite things to think about cuz like...........

theres no winning for him!!!! his experience on the island reflects my own gaming experience so he will inevitably succumb to cannibalism and its something thats gonna stick with him forever, to the point where like. i have some aus where he has the option to leave but hides away and accepts theres no place in the normal world for someone like him anymore

if hes rescued, he hides anyways, staying at home and away from others as much as he can because he cant look at regular humans now as anything other than a threat, and he cant forget how human flesh tastes. he'll never be like everyone else, because if he was in a dire situation he wouldnt hesitate to put any of them on a plate (at least thats the thoughts that goes on in his head)

its never something he'll talk about either. idc if hes living happily with kelvin or WHATEVER its gonna be a growing seed in the back of his head forever

he gets home and hes unsettled, it doesnt feel right for him. he spends all of his time inside their house or out in the backyard because it almost reminds him of his life on the island. part of him undeniably wants to go back, he accepted the island as his home long ago. once you go thru all that carnage and horror its pretty much impossible to live normally anywhere else. he had completely adapted to living there and now that hes back with normal people, he views himself as an active risk because his mind is still stuck in island survival mode, even if it seems like its not.

waking up in the middle of the night to peak out the blinds and make sure no one is around, stopping in his tracks and perking up to identify any distant sound he cant recognize immediately. even the ambient creaking of the house is enough to bother him. the feeling of cooked meat between his teeth and he cant help but think how similar the texture is to what he ate on the island. how he cant stand seeing his neighbors, or ANYONE really because he had been divided from people for so long in such a harsh and dangerous environment that he wants more than anything to scare them off

in aus where hes with others its less severe. when its the whole gang (monty jupe and kel) hes better off because hes not alone and typically he doesnt enact such intense violence and he never resorts to cannibalism. any less than that and hes gonna have a rough time

another fun bit of misery is after they would be rescued, some part of him couldnt stop itself from thinking of kelvin and imagining all the things that couldve (and nearly did) kill him during their time on the island. even if theyre completely safe he cant shake himself out of it, nearly brought to tears every time. part of him afterwards would still think they were truly stuck there and this was all a dream

my favorite scenario is the idea of him braving the horrors of the island only to die so close to the end. in my head sometimes its a quick death, he wouldnt even realized he wasnt gonna make it before he was already gone. other times he just cant do it anymore, hes got no fight left in him. stares blankly at the armsy galloping closer to finally finish him off

we have fun here!!! we really do love giving all my ocs things to be miserable about, literally no one is safe
