heyoo ~ i've been thinking about subbing to practice my chinese, so i was wondering if you could give a lil insight to your experience with it. ie. what software you use (and whether or not you write a script of everything before putting it in said software), how you get vids from iqiyi (this one's stumping me the most lol), uploading process, etc. tysm for your time!

tbh I’m not that experienced with subbing + i sub at a snail’s pace, but let me try to answer with what I know!!

software:

k so when I was fansubbing ALSB with a bunch of other people, since we were doing it collaboratively we had to do it online. we used youtube (the add captions function) till we got copyright-striked, then we moved on to use dailymotion to add subtitles. in our team, we had an overall editor, and as our subs were getting stolen and uploaded onto various other websites, we would complete our subtitling as softsubs, and our editor would download them and then reformat into hardsubs so that the subs wouldn’t be stolen. this served us pretty well! but between the two, i find the youtube interface much easier to use when it comes to adding subs, as you can just click to create a subtitle and drag across the audio wave display which helps with timing, and type your line in.

moving on to me fansubbing exclusive memory now, i attempted to use youtube initally but they didn’t allow me to upload the videos, so i decided to try downloading subtitle programmes to use. currently, i use Subtitle Edit, which is free and is the easiest for me to use (i tried Aegisub which is quite popular but I just can’t really get used to the interface). My interface looks like this:

So I just click on ‘insert new subtitle at video position’ at the start of someone saying something, then drag the subtitle brackets to fit the timing on the audio wave display at the bottom of the screen, then type the line into the text box. I just translate and subtitle as I go along, line by line, rather than writing a script before that. On average it takes me about 8 to 10 hours to subtitle a 50 minute episode…. lmao……

(Lately, someone very kind on twitter has offered to help me time episodes too, so they create the file first with all the timings, and I just add the subtitles which saves much effort of adjusting the timing)

After it’s done, I save it as a .srt file, so it’s a softsub file that you can load with the video when you open it on most media players.

As I prefer to save my videos as hardsubs (meaning the subtitles are encoded into the video itself) so that it’s not as easy for people to rip the subtitles and upload them elsewhere, I then use VLC Media Player to encode the video. First I set the subtitles to a font/size/position I like so that it doesn’t block the Chinese subs and can be read easily: (the preferences will be saved so you just have to adjust once for like the first episode and it’ll work for the rest)

then click ‘Media’ > ‘Convert/Save’:

and then you can load up your video and subtitle files:

There’s a bunch of settings to fiddle with after that but I won’t elaborate because the post is getting quite long hehe you can PM me/ask me more if you do it via this method and need help! But generally after that, it takes about the video length time to process the entire vid, then viola, you have your subtitle-encoded video!

*coughs awkwardly* uh… hehe, while i try to watch airing dramas on the youtube official channel/tencent/iqiyi if i can (i.e. if they don’t geo-restrict me) to contribute to viewership, I like to make the occasional gifset + i get a bit anal about the video quality of the dramas I download like they must be crystal clear 1080p (unless it’s some ancient drama from like the 20th century/the 2000s then the best video quality i can get!!) + no logos as much as possible. sooooo i don’t really download from tencent/iqiyi (anyway I don’t really know how to like it just ends up as some weird video file that can’t be watched anywhere else but on their own media player)…. you can pm me for the links i use to download stuff!

i think dailymotion is a safe bet, but it’s been geo-restricting my videos for exclusive memory so I’ve just been relying on google drive… sigh. honestly the best option (imo) is if there’s an official youtube channel that has the episodes alr, like I wouldn’t mind being a little minion and helping to add subtitles on youtube, because it’s the most ‘legitimate’ and you don’t have to worry about the videos being copyright-striked/taken down haha. Sometimes I get a little anxious about the vids I uploaded…… Oh well.

As we went to the Museumnacht, we had to opportunity to visit one of the museums for free later as long as we went there before December 31st. So Rey and I went to the Outsider Art Museum, cause we are outsiders.

Hihi, that was a joke. By outsider art they mean art that is made by people that are mentally or physically challenged, or having psychological issues. In a way my art is outsider art too, but I am not sure my work would ever be in a museum…

What I liked about the museum was the location, it is within the Hermitage, which is also housing two other museums. So if you do not really like it, you can always get a ticket for the others. The Outsider Art Museum was very small, so that is something to keep in mind if you want to go there.

I found the museum very funny, often endearing, but also a bit the same. I know artists usually make the same kind of style paintings or other art, but in this museum for some reason many works seemed very same-ish. I would have rather seen more artists, than more works by the same artist.

The museum is terribly small, again, so please do not plan a trip to Amsterdam just to go to this museum. Plus, the art can be pretty raw, so you will probably not like everything that is on display. What I missed in the exposition was more explanation about the artist, but that might not be the way though: why state what kind of issues they have, that makes them even more “outsider” perhaps. On the other hand, it is the outsider

On the other hand, it is the outsider museum.. I dunno, it’s difficult I guess. But I do wish there was a little bit more of a background story available about the artist as well as the intentions of the artist with each specific work.

Rey and I were both a bit underwhelmed, but that had to do more with our expectations being totally wrong than the museum not being right. It is cute, the personnel is sweet and there are nice works on display that are not pretentious like all other art in the world.

Please find below a few pictures of it, I am not sure how often their collection changes, but it is nice to have a place for the less artistically schooled people to express themselves. Obviously they do that pretty well. Especially the piece with the bread sack closing thingies that look like Transformers is awesome:

November 30 - December’s Eve hekhek

hello~ it is november 30, 2018. Aka the last day before December. I want to be doing all the christmas activities i possibly can and the number one christmasy place i can think of would be rockwell~ huhu i fucking love it there. im sad because i will not be having gift giving with my hoes this year since one of us is still in thailand and im not so sure if ill be having it with sila kris. id really like to. huhu. but yeah. i just want the christmas activities to start :) i fucking love christmas. it's such a joyfull time. and i dont know but i just love revelling in it. this year, ill be spending it in new york. of all places, can you even imagine. it really does excite me. right now, im avoiding doing work. i have to come up with captions but im literally doing everything else except writing the captions. its such a chore and it can literally take me 1-2 hours to come up with sometimes which is just too much time to be spending on a caption. it's a holiday tomorrow which is great because it gives me time to werk. :) should i go to rockwell and do it? i honestly think i should. i can work in single origin, a lovely place to work and work on first the histciv article and then second the archers for unicef revisions and then lastly social media captions? or like yuh. i can start journaling. what else, ah mentrep. it is almost done. i am almost done. :) i got this. i just need to listen to christmas music everyday. i am planning in celebration of the christmas season, that i will be watching a christmas film a day. in fact, i shall come up with a list right now to prepare my downloads and stuff. :) brb. okie fine, it doesnt necessarily have to be a christmas movie, but as long as it is a movie that takes place in new york to prepare me for the grand holidays :D okay brb will watch charlie brown christmas <3 to start of the holidays. you know, i don't even know what about it makes me want to celebrate it. but fuck i will revel in the christmas cheer :D <3 i will, oh i will. and i will enjoy and tricke in all the corny christmas shit because that's just me and christmas makes me so happy :') i guess my mantra going into december is to just let go. let go and let be. don't let life control you too much because we're in here for such a short time. it's a time for letting go and most of all for reflecting. more than christmas, it's the last 30 days of the year. that's insane. how time flies. 2018 will soon turn into 2019. it will be difficult to get used to writing that down, and how ugly 2019 sounds too. i don't like the sound of 2019. but it may just be the year that takes us for surprise, so lets see. :) im tired you know. like i could give the last leg of 2018 a super extra blow but then honestly, i just want to revel in what ive built this 2018. the friendships ive made. the memories ive created. the adventures ive done. the habits i have built. all of that. and i would like to reflect on how i could possibly be better from here. we're here to constantly improve ourselves always, aren't we? i would like to take the time to reflect on that. that is all really. boy am i excited for this christmas season. so tomorrow, i will wake up. do my morning routine which consists of whipping up a breakfast and then doing yoga afterwards, and then i will head to rockwell to do my homework. i will try to wake up as early as i possibly can. i will also go grocery shopping, buy some christmas stuff like hot choco (a must) hmm some wine? While in Holland we just put thick cream on our faces and call it a face mask, Asians understand that it has to be an actual mask. I bought a Dragon Ball Z one in Japan that I am very excited about, but I will hold on to that one for a special occasion. Today I would like to discuss the Innisfree Strawberry Mask, that my gorgeous friend Reyna purchased at Jolse.

Especially now that it is strawberry season, I was very curious to smell this mask. It smells very much like strawberry candy, so a little bit chemical, especially cause the mask even smelled a little bit alcoholic. I do not think that there is any alcohol in it, but it did have that smell just a little bit.

Anyway, as soon as I pulled the slimy mask out of the packaging I immediatly had to put it on my face cause I was afraid my whole bathroom would be smily, hihi, iewl! As the mask smelled a bit alcoholic I expected to have prickly eyes as soon as it would touch my face, but thankfully that was not the case. Actually, it felt amazing on my face.

There are two main reasons for that, and those are both my “fault”: I get very worked up about things so my face is hot all the time, especially in the evenings. To put a cold mask on that is just heaven. The second thing is that I put my face in the sun for too long last weekend, which made my skin a bit agitated and reddish, so it could use some hydratation and cooling down.

After having a good laugh about how ridiculous these mask look on me, I sat in my bath for 20 minutes with the mask on, and it was a perfect fit. It still surprises me how Asian women wear this masks, as they generally have smaller faces than my viking head. Anyway, it was sitting there very well for the whole time, and after I took the mask off and cleaned my face a bit, it did feel very refreshed and a lot softer. It was really something my skin could use!

The strawberry part of it though, I do not really buy that. It did smell a bit chemically strawberryish, but it is definitly nothing like strawberry, it is not even pink or red! I did really enjoy the mask, especially as it was the perfect moment to use it. Cool! 🙂

So, after waking up in Nagasaki after a long and excellent night of sleep, I went downstairs to have breakfast. As I usually do not really feel like eating noodles or rice in the early morning, I went with some fruit, some scrambled egg and a little sweet sandwich. I had bought some ice tea at the supermarket yesterday, but it was disgusting. Usually I can say: PsychoUni, you might not like it, but just drink it, it’s good to have some fluids in you.

But this was so disgusting; even when I tried it again, knowing about the taste, I could not finish the bottle. It made me a bit scared of (iced) tea, but thankfully for breakfast they served green tea which you could make yourself, so that was way better. After a good breakfast our tour guide told us about some general trip things and more specifically what to do in Nagasaki, and then my parents and I went for it.

First we took the tram to the nucleair bomb museum, which is not at the place where the bomb hit (there is another memorial there, but we did not go). The museum was very cheap, only 200 yen (which is approximately 2 euros), and it was beautiful. The building, the technical stuff, the way the rooms were categorized: it was all perfect. Of course the reason for the museum is pure horror. I cannot imagine what the world was like back then, nor do I understand why they dropped that second bomb after Hiroshima so quickly.

So many lives were lost, so many important cultural objects were distroyed, and it truly is a black page in world history. Not just Japanese history. What I never realised is that the bomb did not just distroy lives and objects because of the impact of the bomb and the nuclear material in it. It also had impact because of the big flash it produced. There are photo’s of things that have a mark on them forever: a mark of leaves, of a person, of a tree. It was such a big flash that things got a bit lighter in color. Isn’t that insane? The longer I think about all this, the weirder and more awful it all gets. More about nucleair bombing tomorrow, as then we will be visiting Hiroshima’s memorial. I do not really look forward to that, cause it is so painful to watch, but on the other hand it is so much part of the country, and it is so essential to know.

After the museum we walked through the beautiful harbor of Nagasaki which had a beautiful park where people were all having a picknick together or with their kids. Or with their dogs, cause everybody has a dachshund here.  It was a lovely day: warm sunshine, though sometimes there was a little bit of rain that included a very cold wind. Nagasaki apparently has one of the most beautiful skylines of the world. I have seen better ones, but it still is very breathtaking.

After our lovely stroll and having some snacks at Starbucks, we went to a place called Dejima, which used to be a small island where the Dutch (yeah, my people!) were running a factory. It was really cool to see so many Dutch words and Dutch things, and the little island looked cool. It was all rebuild, people were walking around in kimonos and you could go inside and walk on the rice mats, which are amazing and I totally want them in my bedroom too.

It really was a cute old little village, and I really enjoyed walking around. Afterwards we went to the Glover Garden, which is located on a hill and offers a beautiful set of gardens with town houses from the old days, really amazing. It was really cool as you took an elevator up and then you could walk all the way down. There was so much to see, my feet started to hurt, hihi.

After that we walked around a bit and we ended up having some cake and juice at the cafe of the Nagasaki Perfectural Art Museum. Really good, beautiful location too, very modern. There was a classical concert going on in the museum, and we could hear it, which was nice. Well to be fair, it was nice until the opera singer came up, cause that was a bit too intense for my taste.

After we had some cake we realised it was almost dinner time, so I checked out Tripadvisor, which had a restaurant only 10 minutes walking away with a very good rating (number two of Nagasaki!). It was called Shikairo, located it a beautiful building with an amazing view. The food was excellent too, though I was a bit disappointed that I could not have any Champon, which is the local dish. They do not really understand vegetarianism here, which is a true pity: I really wanted to try it, but they did not have a veggie version. When I told them I do not eat meat or fish, she said I could order the “steamed vegetables”, which usually came with pork but they would leave them out for me.

I was pretty happy, cause we were having a good time, the view was excellent and the food was good, until I saw a prawn swimming in my bowl. Well, it was not swimming obviously, but it was there. And there was another one, and another one, and suddenly I understood why some of the veggies had a weird texture, almost like it was meat or fish: because it probably was. It was very unfortunate but I only ate the veggies that I knew were veggies, but thankfully I ordered some rice with it, so at least I had that too.

That was a bit of a bad ending of the evening, but I was not bothered, there were a lot of veggies in my bowl and my parents and I had a good time. Tomorrow we will be travelling from Nagasaki to Hiroshima, which is going to be another interesting visit. First, sleep!

  Travel Report Japan – Day 2 – Nagasaki So, after waking up in Nagasaki after a long and excellent night of sleep, I went downstairs to have breakfast.

My hair is a mess. It is not super straight, and it is not curly either. It is pretty long, but I also put a lot of hair dye in it. I cycle with it through the rough Dutch wind, I put it in a ponytail: my hair is having a very rough life. That means it does not always look as healthy as I’d like it to.

It can get pretty fizzy, which is a challenge. It is mainly a challenge because near my head the hair is not fizzy, so it is mainly the ends and a bit up. It is hard to just put hair stuff in there, especially when you buy shampoo for fizzy hair for example: you want shampoo on your head too, to get clean. So then my hair gets greasy at the top and still a bit meh at the bottom: not a good look.

When my mom gave me the beautiful box of Schwarzkopf BC Oil Miracle, I was pretty impressed. It is not cheap stuff, and it was a nice set of the same brand. I usually buy whichever bottle is the  most appealing, hihi, so I hardly ever use a full set of the same products.

I thought that would mean miracles, to have the shampoo, the conditioner AND the hair oil of it, but does not work like that unfortunately. Maybe it even works the opposite way, cause now you put too much oil in your hair it seems. Mine got really greasy the time I used all the products in one shower sesh, and the second time it went a bit better when I just used the shampoo and conditioner. Am I stunned by the results though? Not at all. Again, it is very hard to put some of the oil in your hair without it getting too greasy, and I can’t really see what makes these more expensive products different from their cheaper drug store versions..

I love the packaging, and I do feel that the shampoo and conditioner are indeed a bit different than your average product when looking at texture, smell and concentration, but what it does to your hair is simply wrong or nearly unnoticeable. Too bad, cause it looks very professional.
