had a really interesting convo yesterday about ethics and whether intent or results matters (eg if you tried to make an ethical purchasing choice but the business was actually exploitative as hell, does that "count") and very much came to the conclusion that sure, if you're concerned with your personal immortal soul, as a christian might be, then intention counts. but if what you're focused on is your impact on the world, then intention means nothing if the actions have negative results, right? (that doesn't mean you're to blame for them! you didn't know! but you also don't get "ethics points" for trying, you know?)
and this also got me thinking about the whole christian idea that sinful thoughts are as bad as sinful actions because. they're just not imo. maybe for the sake of your Immortal Soul they are points against you, if that's your jam. but in terms of putting good into the world, in terms of your impact on other people, the ONLY thing that matters is what you choose to do with those thoughts. there is no way that "was kind to someone who was pissing me off, for the sake of community harmony" or "helped an acquaintance with a task even though I felt resentful about the time spent doing that" is a Bad Thing for the world
and it made me wonder how much purity culture and thought policing is rooted in (mostly evangelical) cultural christianity and this idea that ethical choices are an individual thing because what matters is the impact of them on YOUR soul and not, you know, things we do because of what we owe the world around us / because of love for others / because a world where people are trying to put good into it is a hell of a lot nicer to live in than one where people are only worried about themselves
i grew up evangelical but like. fairly mild evangelical and even though there wasn't a big focus on hell and stuff, i definitely fixated on imperfect thoughts and behaviours that were putting absolutely no harm into the world, rather than focusing on what i could do to put good into it, and that individualistic vs outward-focused approach to morality has been something i've grappled with a lot as an adult. but i never really thought about it as simply as this and really that's what it boils down to. are you making the ethical choice because you're trying to put good in the world, or because it would make you a "good person" to do so? because the answer to that 100% defines whether it's the thought or the result that counts
#also i feel like Sinful Thoughts Are As Bad As Sinful Actions...#as well as being bullshit...#is just like a one way trip to moral ocd and a whole lot of guilt spirals#and i just don't think it's useful! you can't necessarily choose your thoughts!#you can however choose your actions because Good is something you do not something you are#ethics#i do think The Good Place did more to make me interrogate my evangelical upbringing and ethical assumptions than anything else#but also this idea of putting good into the world... idk. it's kind of encouraging AND scary#i don't think I'm naturally a very good person but i can choose to do good#i can be bitter and jealous and resentful and still help people and make their lives a little easier#and my feelings are not actually impacting on the world whereas my actions are#at the same time in a society built on exploitation and corporate greeed#it's hard not to be conscious of the harm my actions are doing without me trying#i didn't necessarily make an unethical choice but all of my choices cause harm to someone somewhere#living in the west and the global north and whatever you become very conscious of that

• Turns out it just wasn't a good idea to make out in abandon building with bad wiring because sparks actually DID fly. Technically he was right tho

• Butters is probably the type to accidentally moan in the kiss and feel really embarrassed about it and hope to god you didn't hear it

I wanted to give my own quick interpretation of the scene where Atsushi... imagines? hallucinates? all those people while conflicted over what to do in the most recent chapter, because idk I haven't seen people talk about it that much?
See, the whole conflict with Atsushi in this arc is that he's replaced the constant demeaning of the orphanage director in his head with encouragement from his mentor, and he can control the tiger, and he supports the people around him... but Kunikida makes a point of saying (before everything went to shit) that while Atsushi's tiger is strong, he himself is still weak.
I don't think this has to do with Atsushi's character per se. I think it more so has to do with his still very simplistic views on people or the world - things are very black and white, good or bad. And when faced with a problem without a simple solution, Atsushi's unfortunate tendency is still to freeze up. This is not surprising - he may be 18, but he's a very... how do I put this... a very young 18. He hasn't had anyone teach him these things or guide him. He very much craves support and encouragement from others. He likely also didn't see much of the world outside the orphanage before he was kicked out either. And let's not forget how absolutely shot his self-esteem is. The fact that Atsushi functions and believes in the best in people as well as he does is testament to how kind-hearted and resilient of a person he is.
But here's the problem: Atsushi's self-confidence hasn't done much developing.
What Atsushi has learned throughout the story is how incredible the Agency as a whole is, and as he grows to learn and care about them and realize that he has been given a place to belong, he grows to support them in turn; pulls his weight in a number of increasingly badass ways (he caught a bullet with his teeth. GODDAMN). But all that confidence goes away the moment he is left alone. Atsushi has confidence in his own strength in a group - and only in a group.
Unfortunately, the Agency, though I believe well-intentioned, kind of enables this mentality in him. We see Ranpo, Kunikida and Kyouka in turn, who echo things they have said and would say to this situation.
"Don't you even know that?" Ranpo would ask this, rhetorically, and then solve it himself. Atsushi would not have time to come up with an answer of his own.
"Failure is unacceptable." Kunikida would say this and then act, no matter what. Atsushi would be left to follow what he does.
"You don't have to do anything." Kyouka would protect him. Atsushi wouldn't have to do anything because she would grab his arm and take over from there.
See what's happening here? These are no longer demeaning words from the headmaster (in fact, I want to reiterate that I believe they are all well-intentioned), but they still insinuate that Atsushi is incapable on his own. And indeed it's interesting that Atsushi sees these "visions" of Dazai guiding him all throughout the hunting dogs, sky casino and decay of angels arcs. I, for one, think this is just Atsushi's imagination and not a real vision (unless we get some evidence to the contrary in the future) but for now, it implies that Atsushi's self-confidence is still so abysmal that he has to imagine someone giving him advice and advising him on what to do - instead of being able to consciously admit these ideas are his own.
And then Fitzgerald shows up - "No one expects anything from you." Looming over him, a symbol of power and status over the panicked, conflicted form of a boy who feels eternally powerless without support.
And then it gets interesting.
Akutagawa shows up in Atsushi's mind, for the first time in a guiding role, not a demeaning one. And there's a definite reason for this - when Atsushi was all alone, when he admitted to himself he had no idea what to do and was terrified to be left to fight with no one else with him - who showed up?
Akutagawa. Akutagawa, who in spite of everything, fought by his side and was reliable. And the thing is, Akutagawa cannot take over, not in their kind of plans, or they just won't work. They have to work together. They have to be equals. And on some level, I think this part shows Atsushi's realization of the rather surprising amount of trust Akutagawa had to have placed in him - and him alone. I find it rather heartbreaking that Atsushi appears to have just now started to realize this after their plan failed due to a lack of trust (mostly on his side I'd say) and Akutagawa died.
So, Atsushi receives guidance from Akutagawa, and of course, from Dazai, the person he is extremely grateful for as a mentor. They don't tell him what to do. But still, Atsushi is guided into looking - "get out of your head" and moving - "the door is right there - do something about it". These "visions" still spur Atsushi into action, but the action itself? It's Atsushi's alone.
Atsushi still needs to justify his actions by imagining others giving him support, but this is definite progress for him restoring a sense of personal... agency (see what I did there?) within himself.
And yes, his eventual course of action is to find Fukuzawa and have him make the final decision on the matter - but really now, he's just been told something that apparently has Teruko (who I am certain is older than much of the cast and likely a former soldier from the war) drained and tired and seemingly conflicted herself - this isn't really the kind of issue you want to be deciding on all by yourself. Also, admitting you don't know what to do but moving forwards anyways to actively ask for advice or help is very much still making a decision and moving forward. Actively asking someone what they think about a complex situation is very different from being passive while others take control around you.
Atsushi made the decision to walk out that door into uncertainty. And I am convinced he's going to have to pick a course of action anyways - as of right now, Fukuzawa is out of commission, as are Dazai, Akutagawa, Ranpo and Kunikida (we don't know where Kyouka is yet).
It's been a long time coming, but this is serious progress for his character.

Mind sharing some Ezio, Ziio, Shay and Edward Hcs?
Sofia and Claudia got along like sisters (idk I think this might actually be canon).
Ezio encouraged Flavia to be spirited and curious, and sees himself in her and the way she takes care of Marcello. If Ezio had lived to see her to adulthood, he would have been protective but let her choose her own husband.
Ezio wanted to keep his Assassin activities a secret from his children. After he died, Claudia took them in and trained them herself the way their Uncle Mario did for them.
Ziio and Oiá:ner's interactions became stilted after the birth of Ratohnhaké:ton. There was no doubt that the love was there, but Oiá:ner could not quite look at her the same again, and she had to busy herself with finding someone else to groom as successor. They were finally warming up to each other again just a year or so before Ziio died.
Oiá:ner put full trust into Ratohnhaké:ton and his decision-making going forward because she didn't want to drive a wedge between herself and her grandson the way she did with Ziio. And it was the hardest thing she ever had to do.
Modern-day Ziio would have been a leader in the stand-offs against the Canadian government and localities like the Kanehsatà:ke Resistance, which her voice actor Tiio Horn was actually in. My headcanon Ziio has a lot of Tiio Horn's traits, mostly because Tiio Horn's sass that I see in her social media comes through a lot in her voice acting for Ziio.
Ratohnhaké:ton's a BEAST at lacrosse. Man moves like WATER.
Shay died peacefully in a manner similar to Ezio's -- in a garden, watching his family.
Shay most definitely was the black sheep amongst the Templars -- not just because a traitor gets no trust from any side, but because he's Irish and many other Templars were Englishmen who were racist against him. Adéwalé called him Haytham's hunting dog, but the Templars thought the same of him.
Because of this, Shay was that high-achieving Templar the others resented, because they hated the idea of being outdone by someone they felt was lesser. They kept their distance from each other, and his friends in the Order were kept in a tight circle -- Jack Weeks, Gist, and Haytham.
That's also why Cudgel was so fiercely proud of his grandfather later on too -- despite the racism, he was more Templar than any of them.
Also, Lil Cudge seems to me like that kind of guy who in modern day would insist that the Irish were slaves. He seems to me like someone who's very loyal, but but blindly so, and someone who doesn't question tradition.
Edward wanted to raise Haytham as English as possible, but he'd occasionally slip up and curse in Welsh at times. Haytham would grow up with only vague memories of the Welsh part of his heritage.
Edward was a rambunctious lil youngster who didn't need any dogs to herd the sheep. The wolves were scared of HIM lol.
Edward's relationship with Jenny haunts my dreams. What happened in the years between her and Haytham's birth. The people need to know.
I wrote a whole other word vomit post expressing my guess that he didn't want her to get involved in the Assassin world because he wanted to protect his last memory of Caroline. He believed in being honest with your child, so she knew everything about his activities. But given that Caroline had already been disowned because of him and even now that he was a new money gentleman, he was a social pariah because of his pirate past, he wanted Jenny to live a noblewoman's life -- marry a man of good social standing and be a good wife. And although she protested, he always thought he knew what was best for her.
If Jenny knew about her brother's child and ever met him, she honestly would've adored him. Such a polite, well-loved young man. She would've been relieved that he was raised right by his mother's side, away from the Kenway drama. Thank God all he had in common with her side of the family was blood, but if she could have chosen to be blood with any remaining relative of hers, it would have been him.

I think there’s a definite problem though with the amount of art and fics being HEAVILY Astarion with cis women. That reeks of his queerness being erased. There should be a healthy balance of Astarion with different partners, but the “default” in the fandom is always him with a woman. As a gay man it’s very frustrating.
Okay so. in however much any of this matters. 1. Shoving this under a cut for people who are tired of seeing the discourse (I am too, I tend to scroll really really fast past it.) 2. I know the fandom discourse machine looooves super firm and snarky opinion jabs summed up in 169 words or less but I am literally incapable of not elaborating so. sorry YOU asked. since it’s also probably relevant, Im coming at this with the Mega Dyke with the fuck around and find out perspective irt my life experiences and queerness. I don’t generally care about niche queer internet discourse and I don’t generally care about fandom discourse, so you can tell how bored I am at work rn that I’m deep diving into this. tldr yeah you’re not wrong I agree that astarion’s queerness is erased in certain spaces but that has nothing to do with being attracted to women. my funny hot take is once again that astarion is a he/him evil femme to me so. let’s MOVE.
I received the second one within the first few minutes of the first, and I’m goingggg to proceed on good faith and with the idea that I think we’re all in agreement for the most part, because I think we are. But I’m going to address the most obvious thing that. I don’t really…. think is necessarily the point in this. first of all, I empathize that it suuuucks to not see as many works made for your main pairing of choice (there’s generally a deficit for literally everyone BUT astarion to boot too.) however ultimately fanworks are exactly that: fanworks, and they’re made For Free and posted by a Fan Author who has done this As A Hobby, “a problem nobody is addressing” in this context is……. you are one google doc and keyboard away from writing what you want to see in the world. or, I don’t know. encourage + comment + follow up on fic authors that write what you enjoy. fic is not paid content and the fic authors in bg3 are writing for themselves and what they put out, that they wrote for FREE, is up to them. I once again empathize with not seeing as much of a specific thing as you would like, and I definitely empathize with seeing a popularization of specific characterization that makes you want to scream, cry, throw up, etc. which brings me to what I can actually comment on and critique here. (general note: if you proceed to misread me on the basis of “people can do what they want!!” I assure you. you can do whatever you want forever. I do not care. I am not mad. I am minding my business 90% of the time. do I like domstarion? no. but it is NOT my concern nor my judgement.)

this brings me to the point I kind of offhandedly made in the previous post, about how there IS nuance to be said on astarion’s queerness getting erased. I do actually agree with you that in some spheres of the bg3 fandom, his queerness has been heavily sanitized and he’s become something of a placeholder for Sexy Vampire Boyfriend romance tropes. he’s mostly there to be a stand-in for a sexy dom vampire man; MANY of his complex character traits that have literally Nothing to do with romance have been basically entirely removed to serve a specific idealized idea of him that suit the scene. it’s frustrating! I find it frustrating. I also agree that within this specific Brand of Mischaracterized Astarion, he’s been so……….. reduced down to this that his more overt queerness is basically entirely removed. however, the issue is not that he’s with a woman in this? the issue is that the writer is not incorporating a sort of.. overarching queer lens, for lack of a better term, to the characterization they’ve got going on. you can write whatever you want forever, but it’s not written in a vacuum, I agree.
Since these are all popular straight romance tropes, he falls directly into the pit of Sexy Man (straight) very quickly, and his attraction toward others (let alone, good god, his complex relationship to sex, sexuality, desire? good fucking luck finding something thoughtful in there about that) tends to fall by the wayside as a result. It is what you would expect but it’s not without room for critique in what I think we’re aligned on; which is seeing astarion’s queerness erased is maddeninggg. And it is EXTREMELY frustrating to see if you’re someone like me, or possibly yourself, who’s into 1. really analyzing characterization and 2. really into exploring queer dynamics in writing + lit + media many different formats. THIS—the sanitization, the removal of astarion’s queerness—this is what is irksome as a queer reader.
however. the issue I’m seeing is that ^^^^^ this brand of mischaracterization is 1. being conflated with simply that he’s with women, and 2. the frustration of having less content (understandable) is turning into a very WEIRD dialogue in which the extreme of “well actually he wouldn’t even want to fuck women!!” is the stance to take (very weird) (kind of misogynistic) (kind of also reeks of continuing to talk about women as sex objects that astarion would not or would want to fuck) (astarion himself doesn’t even want to fuck for about 90% of his romance so maybe we should talk about that too) — rather than that it would be nice if his queerness would be addressed more openly and with more nuance and clarity than it currently is in That Particular Sphere Of Astarion Characterization. and, of course, the idea that it would be nice if he was portrayed with other kinds of partners! which I agree with and equally appreciate.
but there is no default. literally, there’s no default. what you’re seeing is what people are making of their own tavs, and maybe you would like to see more of another kind, but it doesn’t hold up as an actual fandom critique. what holds up is when we dive into how people write him; how do they write his personality, what traits are being exaggerated and what traits are being ignored; IS his queerness remembered within the text at all? and beyond that, how is that queerness treated when it is written? because I’ve seen the other extreme in which it’s The Homophobic Gay Stereotypes That Maybe We All Agreed At One Point Were Equally Offensive To Exaggerate To The Point Of Horror. half the discussion I see AROUND his queerness amounts to “omg he’s such a slutty flamboyant little fag” but in a quirky haha internet way. very “fruity is a nice alternative to saying queer!” “calling a gay guy fruity in the real world will get you punched out.” vibes in here sometimes and it is EQUALLY weird.
anyways. Astarion’s a multifaceted character which means the first thing everyone did was pick one or two traits to exaggerate and cling to and these color the entire reading of his character rather than taking in the whole. i agree that means his queerness got put to the wayside in some formats of him, and that’s deeply unfortunate + very frustrating. but fanfic is free, so I’m not with you that there’s a Problem That Needs Addressing so much as that’s what people are creating, and you should add to what you want to see in the world.
I’m not going to go on a tangent about how “oh let m/f be a thing!!” because I ALSO agree literally no one needs to be told “m/f is okay to do ❤️” we live in the real world here. and it’s really mindboggling how in some iterations he’s been turned into Straightstarion rather than his CANON QUEERNESS being applicable in every format of every relationship dynamic he could ever possibly be in. However. TerasTale: Character personalities
I renamed my au since I did not like it at all.
Anyways, here’s a quick description of my au if you don’t know:
Monsters are like actual monsters, they have very little empathy and sympathy, and they’re very violent. This depends monster to monster though, a monster may be more human than a monster (perhaps a bit rude and apathetic, but not violent) while another may be a bloodthirsty beast. The average is like: rude, perhaps a bit violent, but won’t attack everyone.
I decided on some characters’ personalities (and some of their designs) but they can be changed any time. Here’s a basic description.
Chara: They hate both monsters and humans, they want revenge and encourage you to kill monsters. (They’re mostly normal.)
Toriel: Cold and hateful to monsters, she kills any monster on sight. She likes reading and still has the same fascination with snails, but she feels lonely in her home in the ruins and is possessive. She’s not the kind goat momma she once(?) was (I wanna change this)
Sans: a prankster who barely takes anything seriously. He likes to trick people and scare them for fun. He is pretty lazy and hates working, and also has a taste for comedy. He’s good at acting. He doesn’t have much morals, but he definitely won’t harm you as long as he doesn’t hate you to the bone. He’s not very kind but he’s nicer than most of the monsters, but if you get close to him, you probably won’t get the worst of his pranks. and most importantly.. he loves lemons. (The fruit)
Papyrus: A dedicated guardsmen. He is part of an unofficial “Monster Guards” to defend monsters who can’t defend themselves. He’s one of the most sympathetic and empathetic monsters in the underground. He is loyal and serious. He quite likes sweet food, but hates sour food. He is actually quite friendly for a monster, but he isn’t innocent by all means. He likes painting, and is very annoyed by his brother’s antics. (He gets a lot of his pranks.)
Undyne: a bloodthirsty monster who runs a gang wanting to overthrow the king for power. She has anger issues, and wants power. She often clashes with Papyrus. Other than that, she likes watching fantasy action anime with lots of battle scenes. She quite likes spicy food and often challenges herself by putting as much spicy sauce in her food. She is very determined and HATES humans.
Alphys: idk haven’t decided.
Mettaton: haven’t decided but it should be mostly the same.
Asgore: dead
Asriel: The ruthless king of the underground. He killed Asgore because he was “too soft”, he wishes for destruction for humanity and the monsters to take over the world. He allows for killing to happen and believes that if a monster dies, they deserved to die because they were weak. He is selfish and is a true monster.
so err, how is it?
if you can, gimme some ideas for personalities and stuff.
also for powers that aren’t op or completely replace the og abilities they have. I want Toriel to have.. idk, sans to have stealthy powers, papyrus to have defensive powers, undyne to have offensive powers, mettaton to have.. idk, explosive powers? Asriel to have some really disturbing power.
(Oh, and what in the hell happens when an inanimate object gets dt injected? I know how flowey happened but what if asriel’s dust wasn’t there?)

Luigi and his Dad
(and how this shows Luigi's character)
I was recently rewatching the Mario movie and I thought I should talk about Luigi and his father, and how that plays into Luigi's character and his dynamic with Mario. Since mostly everyone talks about Mario and their dad. So here goes!!
This is all my opinion and how interpret how their kind of... Dynamic?? World view?? Is -- viewed?? Idk ALSO THIS IS MORE ABOUT LUIGIS CHARACTER and how his father's relationship with him shows it. (I will probably state this a billion times in this essay but I'm dumb so pls don't fight me)
Ok! I would like to claim that their father doesn't really acknowledge Luigi as anything special, or worth noting compared to Mario atleast, which he sees as his problem child, or star child (depending on how he's feeling) in my opinion. Now this isn't good or bad. He just sees Luigi as this normal and good guy, which is fine. (Not really kinda) And I know this sounds harsh but I have a few reasons as to why I believe so!
One of their first and only exchanges at the dinner table (from their first day at their new job might I add) is where Luigi enthusiastically states,
"I like mushrooms, I'll take it!" His father replies passively with "Yeah!" while looking at Mario.
this very simple gesture can be interpreted as Luigi only being there to encourage Mario. Because the only reason Luigi and his dad even talked in the first place was because Mario didn't like the mushrooms. Not because he asked if Luigi liked Mushrooms or not. I know I'm like wayyyy psycho analyzing this but it's like the only direct dialogue they have in the entire movie so that alone is worth noting in my opinion.
In this same scene, Their father remarks to Mario,
"You don't leave a steady job for some crazy dream! And the worst part? You're bringing your brother down with you."
This implies that their dad thinks that Mario roped Luigi into this business-- Luigi was following Mario -- and if Mario is failing in it, then so is Luigi.
He's basically saying that Mario's failures causes Luigi's faults simply because they're working together. (which we all know isn't true) but he thinks so! and this also implies that Luigi isn't known for doing much for himself.
As we, unfortunately, DO see Luigi following Mario and quite literally being dragged by him into the streets of Brooklyn down a pipe,
and that does cause Luigi's downfall as he's trapped above lava for about 2 days (BUT WE AREN'T GOING TO TALK ABOUT THAT)
And if Mario is at fault for Luigi being practically tortured, it doesn't matter because their dad still sees Mario and Luigi in this light either way.
Simply put, Mario is the screw-up who doesn't know when to throw in the towel. And Luigi is, well, just the little brother who follows him.
There's nothing special about him, aside from being wimpy.
At least Mario has some shining attributes, He seems to have trophies on his bed, He's a go-getter, and he has dreams that he's more than willing to fight for.
But does Luigi have those same dreams? or is that only because Mario had that dream of becoming a plumber?
And sure, Luigi has good traits too, he's sensitive, encouraging, and sweet. But there's not much else that others see atleast.
Mario is a much more interesting person, he takes risks and swoops at every opportunity he gets. But that makes Luigi look second rate. And on top of that skittishness of his? Oof. Double whammy. Side by side, one obviously looks stronger willed than the other.
We can see that the brother's infamous phrase
"As long as we're together everything will be ok"
really shines through because it seems that if they were stripped apart, Mario and Luigi have no idea what to do. Because Luigi literally doesn't. He waits for Mario to come get him or he waits to die. And I KNOW this is a far stretch but this could totally play into his character.
Without Mario, Who is he? Since the beginning, they've been The Super Mario Brothers. And the same goes for Mario, who is he without Luigi?
The world would know that he's Mario, the kid whose desires are bigger than what he can see. But to Mario personally, his brother is everything to him, he doesn't care about what others think (usually).
The entire movie is just Mario trying to get his baby brother back home. But Luigi doesn't have any unique traits that we can see in the Mario Movie. But to Luigi personally, and Mario, They know he's so much more. But to the outside Luigi is just Mario's brother- who gets kidnapped. And Mario is the hero that saves the day.
And, back on track, Mario and Luigi's dad knows this.
His relationship with Luigi (in my .. deranged opinion) is kind of like the mascot of How the World sees Luigi. With Their dad being the world, and Luigi being Luigi.
Their father knows that Mario is kind of too silly for his own good, and Luigi willingly follows along which leads them both into trouble. But with Marios temperament, He's the one coming up with the solutions. And Luigi kind of just panics off to the side, ofcourse he helps, but everyone knows Mario has the plan.

AND THAT MY FRIENDS!!! is,,, kind of how I interpreted Luigi's Character (thanks to their father) I was going to add the end credit scene where their dad Is proud of them. And that Lowkey would've helped my case even more. But then someone could also argue that, Mario is also this huge nobody so him finally getting recognition is GOOD. and not just because he's this strong hero.
But you CAN GO EITHER WAY. this is just MY OPINION!!!! ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥🔥‼️‼️
and for the record I Do not think Mario and Luigi's relationship is super dependent, they just love eachother and don't want to see the other get hurt 💔💔 But Luigi DOES need to MAYBE??? work on his self worth or his independence. Ive been putting people in the backrow of the history class lessons as pairs and i normally put people that are friends (or Leona and Malleus)
And today i put Ortho beside Malleus and now im wondering
How would Ortho be like around Mal? Would he be open and ((less)suffocatingly) welcoming like Kalim is with everyone? Would he ramble about himself to Malleus? Or would Ortho ask Malleus a milllion and one questions cus he wants to be friends with the fae that everyone keeps avoiding for some weird reason?
I can imagine Malleus teaching Ortho about gargoyles and grotesques a lot and maybe Malleus can tell Ortho stories about places he's been to and things he's seen people do (cause Ortho may soon pick up that he hasn't experienced these first hand) then Ortho would ask if they could do random friendship things together (idk myself uuuuuuhhhh-)
Ortho invites Malleus over to play games and watch shows and Malleus is EXSTATIC because not only has he made a new friend but they wanna hang out and do things together too???? Is this a dream????? He hopes he never wakes up back to his lonely royal duties
Idia in the middle of this all TERRIFIED that the UR+ character of the school is INSIDE HIS BEDROOM and is willing to watch anime with both of them even doe he has no idea of what it is and whether he'll like it or not (he doesn't care he just wants to be around more people)
And then Idia is somehow the most mature in the room not only because its his bedroom and he's kind of Malleus' teacher in how to play games, but because although his brother puts all AI in their world to shame he is still a child and somehow even the dragon fae that is possibly close to ten times his age is also a child-
Unfortunately for the school these two can get mischievous if encouraged enough by the situation and they will make it everyone else's problem.
Lilia discovers this and is joyful that Malleus has a friend and they get along so well (and he can't deny he loves their mischief even though it isn't good practice for Malleus)
If Idia ever catches feelings for Malleus, Ortho and Lilia would play matchmaker till Malleus catches on (cus he probably wouldn't be able to tell what's going on at first)
(And then there's Ortho being a robot, meaning he will live longer than most creatures so long as his integral parts are intact. Meaning Malleus has a friend that won't be lost easily to time-)
(But then there's also the possibility that Ortho could one day ask to be human again, and with Malleus being one of the literal 5 strongest mages, who's to say he can't do that)
I'm so so so sorry. I know I'm super late, I had a few things going on with my life. Especially a bunch of entrance exams for college (which I thankfully passed, but have two more in December), so I haven't had time to write in a while. But here are my thoughts on their relationship.
OMG, yess ortho and Mal would be besties. from mals birthday boy card voice lines ortho even got him an ice shaving machine though it was cutting edge tech so Mal didn't know how to use it :(
they would be menace together but since both of them has the ability to look like a kicked puppy, no one has the heart to tell them off
Idia would be having the worst time of his life. he's so tired of being the mature one over the fae who has been alive for 10000000 years (jk 700 only). mal and ortho have the ability to pout and they will.
ortho will teach mal everything about humans and machines though malleus doesn't always get it he's happy to listen to his new friend
Diasomnia is in disarray, Lilia is happy over the possibility to adopt another child, Sebek is crying over how WaKaSaMa has contracted a disease that is leading him to act this way, and Silver, despite having great difficulty in keeping awake, is the only sane one in the whole dorm. And the rest? they believe Ortho to be the newest royal of the briar valley. He's the prince's new brother and therefore their new god prince.
Idia and Mal together will be so funny. I know it'd be some cliche anime trope with Idia falling into Mal's arms (with the help of Lilia's magic) since Mal is a price and, Idia is internally freaking out.
Angst potential? angst potential.
Being immortal (almost) ortho and Mal will have to go through the losses of their loved ones, I think Idia being gone will hit Ortho the hardest because he's literally programmed to love Idia just as much original Ortho loved him, and will probably send him into an existential crisis.
And by now we all know how Mal reacted to the thought of his loved ones leaving him.
so angst buddies. Cursed to be left alone for eternity.

See the problem isn't even about shipping itself. I've seen like "Yeah shipping doesn't have to exist what about nonromantic relationships and gen!" Which I think is also missing the point. I think the deeper root is that it's discouraging to see people lose sight of art itself as something that's political, as something with bias, as something with a message, as symbolic, etc as a construct of the thing itself. The real problem is that art is becoming a marketable product for wanton consumption and people don't want to engage in art for arts sake.
Yes light-hearted stuff does have its place but what is art for? Sometimes you should be emotionally and ideologically challenged because it fosters growth, and it helps build empathy for complex experiences that you might not have.
Art is subjective, not just in reference to "quality" whatever that means. It means it deals with the realm of the subjective- in emotions, experiences, expressions, philosophies, perspectives, attachments.
And then also being able to sit and decode biases of the writers and the constructs of the narrative also help with being able to enjoy light-hearted things and to understand the jokes. Dr. Goldfoot and the bikini machine is also a deconstruction of the treatment of women in the James Bond franchise. Megamind is also a statement on toxic possessive masculinity and humanizing criminals and immigrants.
Its also kind of wild that these are just. Topics. They're not even particularly deep topics and explorations. It's wild to me that just interpreting at all is seen as intellectual and unnecessary. The other thing is, I want to leave room for the idea that not everyone is able to intepret. Ive seen the stance that being anti-fandomification is ableist. There are people who won't, for example, he able to pick up on social cues of the characters and therefore come to different conclusions on why a certain scene was put in place. I think that's all fine and good and valid, but I think the more we can enjoy and interpret media as a culture beyond their face value marketability the better. I mean there are going to be asexual aromantic autistic people for example who would love to be able to have media that explore a wider diversity of motifs and topics and interests presented. Diversifying fan reception also helps out people who engage with media differently from you (ex. I know there has been a huge backlash in the stereotype of thr gatekeeping comics reader who just asks if you've read certain runs to test your alliegence to the franchise. I wonder how much of that is just a fucked up portrayal of autistic fans who want to talk about their favourite plots with someone who might understand).
I don't know. It's just kind of exhausting it's become about defensiveness about how you enjoy your media. Like yeah to be honest shipping characters is fun or whatever. I think though this is a sentiment coming from people who are constantly seeing people miss the point of a piece of media that they do love, having characters they love be misinterpreted, or being distraught when people are praising a show for fat queer rep when the media is clearly pushing an anti-fat and anti-queer narrative by making them a Nazi sympathizer and pedophile or something. It also encourages less thoughtful media making on the part of artists and creators who are more encouraged to think about the bottom line, especially when fans flock to things with interesting concepts and aesthetics but absolutely no substance or chemistry between characters.
Idk. People point to how Spirk was so popular and that shipping has existed since the 70s. And yes weird porn has always existed and I encourage people writing whatever. But that ship also arose out of a progressive piece of media that tried to come up with a hopeful future world where people are united regardless of race or nationality. You have a black woman and a Russian and an honest-to-god mixed race alien all working together like its normal. The themes of the show are progressive. Of course people are going to read into the homoerotic relationship at the heart of the series.
The problem now is that people are still drumming up excitement over absolute shit-tier content like marvel films and Avatar 2 that are actually pretty regressive for Our Modern Times being pro-military and cisheteronormative. Care more about the artistic value of a piece if only to demand better from corporations. If only to be able to see through progressive posturing on the topic of representation just to spout regressive propaganda.

Honestly, those lines are so good, I might throw them in with some small changes and additions. Also, kind of thinking of giving reader a gun, specifically a type of sniper. IDK why, but the idea of a human weapon being exceptionally effective against theirs because it's made from human world materials and the faces of the Baal and his goons when they realize they have no protection from this is hilarious to me.
Like I just picture Behemoth attacking and reader just whips out their gun and tells Iruma to text Opera that “we’re having ham tonight OK honey” grabs the little deity princess out of the way and just shoots Behemoth. Taking Baal’s Thunder as the saviour and taking out a previous 13 crown member, which just makes more people wanting them as the new king even more.

Hi! I always wanted to ask, even if its a silly thing, but I never saw an artist with your style and I think its really cute that your dean and cas have such bitable noses (they just look so fluffy). Where did it came the idea to make them like that?

so i waited to answer this until i was back on my computer to basically say: idk!
but the longer answer is i was always interested in making the nose the focal point of the face. all my art style journeys always made sure i would put the nose for you to see it and always make it red lol.
i haven't drawn in a few years, about 3 years, until last fall and i wasn't happy with my style anymore. it felt too morose when i was just wanting to feel happy because the world around me is just meh and blegh every day, my job is stressful, and i wanted something to just keep me happy.
this was my art 3 years ago
and i liked this style -- but it was also limiting for me bc it just always made me feel less vibrant and just more quiet and a little sad
but over the last 7 years these were styles i would do for a drawing or two every so often while i was still trying to figure my style out until i arrived at ^
I think this one is the closest one i can get to now
but there were other attempts:
i thought it was a limiting style though because they don’t have a fully drawn eye and the noses kind of reminded me of a newspaper comic strip i used to see growing up falled Funky Winkerbean. I don’t know why -- their noses definetly aren’t like this -- but whatever pfft.
But I still found the lack of eyes limiting, and that these were too cutesy, but also i couldn’t figure out how to make it constantly work so i just abandoned it and went back to my normal stuff.
like i said, i hadn’t drawn for a few years but last october, i was feeling frustrated not being able to find the proper motivation to do winchester-relod’s Suptober challenge so i doodled this dude [by now i didn’t have my tablet and so any time i sporadically drew since 2018 i just drew on my phone]
and then idk people thought he looked cute?
and then i drew this a few days later:

and i guess it just kept going from there? people thought it looked cute, and i thought it was warm and happy and it made me happy to draw it.
obviously looking at the art even from 9 months ago the style has changed as i figured out what i wanted to do with it [and invested in a little ipad to draw on instead of drawing with my finger on my phone lol]:

I think I am sticking with this for now [sometines doing a slightly ‘normalized nose’ from time to time] because 1) y’all encourage me with your very kind words 2) it makes ME feel good to draw them like this -- like idk i never am like UGH with a drawing 3) it’s just fun!
really it’s one of those things where for the longest time i’ve been trying to take inspiration from so many styles around me because I just didn’t know how to define myself as an artist, and then i just wasn’t drawing as much anymore once i DID settle on style from a few years ago -- to now just wanting to smile any time i’m creating something so if it makes me smile, my goal is to make others smile lol.
a driving factor for finding my style before was like ‘how do i make this edgy and emo if i wanted to?’ because at the time i was still experiences lows.
and now, i still experience lows [spoons, mental health, yadda yadda] but instead of drawing the sadness out, i wanted to draw something that’d bring the smile back at least in my mind lol.
and nothing makes me happier than smacking my hand into my ipad trying to honk their noses and then hearing messages from others [like yourself] who find the noses cute as well!

When Anthony stops Ben from pursuing clover, how much of that do you think was less so an objective gesture of goodwill and more so a reflection of his (and a lot of people in the ton’s) view of love, especially as he’s seen in his own life.
What I mean about this beyond the fact that everyone in the ton, despite being enamored with the idea of love, they don’t try that hard to pursue it (look at how rare love matches are) but also how Anthony protects himself (at this point in the story) by denying himself the idea of love (namely with lottie).
His idea is that he’s protecting her, but he’s also protecting himself in a lot of ways too. Anthony thinks that he’s protecting everyone by not falling in love, and he’s encouraging Ben to do the same, not because he wants to keep Ben from pursuing love, but because he wants to protect him from the pain it might cause.
It’s the sort of catch 22 that every person who loves another must struggle with (especially parents and parent types): we want good things to happen to those we love without any of the risk. I suppose we want this for ourselves too, now that I think about it.
It’s the simple failing to realize that not only is the good thing attainable because of those risks, but that that’s also why it’s so meaningful. It’s difficult to balance and know what the right risk/reward is, so most people error on the side of caution. Ben is very much the type to play a high risk/high rewards game, which pays off, but really shows a lot about the stakes that everyone else balked, despite their admiration of the reward (love in this case).
Idk it’s just super interesting to think about imho
Also re: our other convo: I think that both allergies and intolerances can start at any time! Our bodies are weird like that lol
Also I still hate mushrooms lolololol. I can tolerate cabbage if something is masking the taste, but I don’t prefer it. It’s a texture thing for me when it comes to the other things though. I’m really weirdly specific about the textures of things I’ll eat, so mushrooms are a no-no in my book.

I think it was a mixture of both! Like, I definitely think Anthony's own perspective of love played some part in it, especially now that we know he has been in love with Lottie that whole time❤️ But like, even before that, protecting and putting his family first is a second nature to Anthony at this point❤️
And there was also the fact that Clover is incredibly different than Benedict😁 And Anthony heard all kinds of things about her, because the ton was buzzing with gossip when she was first introduced😁 She's more of a riddle, no one knows all that much about her and she has zero interest in letting them know anything about her, and Anthony does NOT like riddles, nor does the ton😏
They are all used to the debutantes being a certain way, and Clover had already started breaking it on her first outing, refusing to smile at anyone😂
So I think Anthony did not want Benedict to get his heart broken, but also he knew he would eventually fall in love ❤️ He was just hoping it wasn't someone like Clover ❤️
Benedict on the other hand was already obsessed after their first interaction for the very same reason, that she doesn't fit the type of an "ideal debutante" 😈
