had a really interesting convo yesterday about ethics and whether intent or results matters (eg if you tried to make an ethical purchasing choice but the business was actually exploitative as hell, does that "count") and very much came to the conclusion that sure, if you're concerned with your personal immortal soul, as a christian might be, then intention counts. but if what you're focused on is your impact on the world, then intention means nothing if the actions have negative results, right? (that doesn't mean you're to blame for them! you didn't know! but you also don't get "ethics points" for trying, you know?)
and this also got me thinking about the whole christian idea that sinful thoughts are as bad as sinful actions because. they're just not imo. maybe for the sake of your Immortal Soul they are points against you, if that's your jam. but in terms of putting good into the world, in terms of your impact on other people, the ONLY thing that matters is what you choose to do with those thoughts. there is no way that "was kind to someone who was pissing me off, for the sake of community harmony" or "helped an acquaintance with a task even though I felt resentful about the time spent doing that" is a Bad Thing for the world
and it made me wonder how much purity culture and thought policing is rooted in (mostly evangelical) cultural christianity and this idea that ethical choices are an individual thing because what matters is the impact of them on YOUR soul and not, you know, things we do because of what we owe the world around us / because of love for others / because a world where people are trying to put good into it is a hell of a lot nicer to live in than one where people are only worried about themselves
i grew up evangelical but like. fairly mild evangelical and even though there wasn't a big focus on hell and stuff, i definitely fixated on imperfect thoughts and behaviours that were putting absolutely no harm into the world, rather than focusing on what i could do to put good into it, and that individualistic vs outward-focused approach to morality has been something i've grappled with a lot as an adult. but i never really thought about it as simply as this and really that's what it boils down to. are you making the ethical choice because you're trying to put good in the world, or because it would make you a "good person" to do so? because the answer to that 100% defines whether it's the thought or the result that counts

Hardboiled #10-25 (1990-98) cover artwork by Bruce Timm
Interview from Cool Stuff Magazine #1 (1995):
Gary Lovisi: Much of your work is characterized by raw, intense energy and action, or beautiful women in stylish, dangerous settings. Some is obviously influenced by the pulps.
Bruce Timm: I’m big pulp fan, have been since the early 70s, when I started reading Doc Savage and Avenger reprints. I can’t really say how they’ve influenced my artwork much, except when doing pulp-homage stuff like the Bob Price books. But I do sometimes wish I was born decades earlier so I could have worked for some of the old pulps, which was why it was so much fun doing the Price stuff, and the «mock 50s» paperback covers for your Gryphon Books.
The hero pulps — Doc Savage, The Spider, The Shadow, etc — did have a big impact on my approach to the Batman cartoons. It’s something I tried to inject into the show from early on, the atmosphere, danger and illicit excitement, and especially that Norvell Page-type feeling of impending doom — the «doomed city» mood. It’s also why I set the sense in a timeless, 40s-styled world of big cars, padded shoulders, gangsters, shadowy streets, etc. I only wish we’d gone farther with it.
For instance, my original version of Batman himself was actually close to the Shadow: rarely seen close-up, speaking in short, clipped phrases, more mysterious, literally. I wanted to play him cold and remote, almost unhuman. But the network and our various story editors would have none of that!  «We need to humanize him», «He needs to have a sense of humor», «We need to more about Bruce Wayne, the person», etc! Whereas I could care less about Bruce Wayne! He’s much more fascinating if you don’t know what he’s thinking, or what drives him.
A few «Shadowy» touches did survive. Batman is rarely seen be the public, almost never on TV. Even when dealing with the police, he’s usually off in shadows conferring with Commissioner Gordon only. And when he’s in the Batcave, he’s almost always in costume. My way of saying he’s Batman, not the other guy, not Bruce Wayne. Like Lamon Cranston, his true, «legal» identity is a facade.
I’ d love to do straight-ahead pulp hero adaptation someday. Doc or The Shadow or The Spider, either in comics or animation, without the senseless updating and over-explaining «character development» like in the Alec Baldwin-Shadow-fiasco-film.
Gary Lovisi: Your stunning covers for my Hardboiled mag are very popular with everyone who sees them. What are your feelings on hardboiled crime-related art?
Bruce Timm: It’s hard, actually, to define «crime-fiction» art. There’s pulp crime-fiction art, and digest crime-fiction art, both of which cross over with paperback crime-fiction art. Basically, I’m a fan of good illustration. Period. Regardless of subject matter. Composition, emotionally intensity, color and lighting effects are what I look for. And pretty girls, of course!
My favorite pulp crime artist is H. J. Ward, hands down. Gorgeous gals in twisty curvy poses, painted in luscious, creamy, wet-on-wet oil technique. My favorite paperback artists include Robert McGinnis, Robert Maguire, and Mitchell Hooks, the usual suspects.
My approach to the Hardboiled covers is different from my earlier «homage» work. When the covers were black and white, I used to experiment with different b&w textures, coquille board, zip-a-tone, xeroxed newsprint, whatever worked. Now that I’m doing them in color, I’m trying to make them as exciting and eye-catching as possible, with loud color, sexy gals, exaggerated action, and simple, graphic, almost cartoony styling.

Vee’s Steam Summer Sale 2023 Recommendations
Tumblr media
as always these are just personal opinions etc etc please look up some real reviews before buying a game if you aren’t sure and remember that steam will give you a full refund if you have less than 2 hours played in under 2 weeks.
im going to try to recc stuff i havent shilled every 6 months for the last 5 years but the VNs are going to be the same as always honestly
Fighting Games
Tumblr media
Guilty Gear -Strive- Ultimate Edition 2022 ($55.99)
yes im specifically saying buy ultimate edition because it has all the dlc as of this writing. buy the base version if you want but i hate playing fighting games with incomplete rosters.
anyway this is my favorite fighting game, bar none. this is the game that after years of screwing around on a bunch of other games finally got me to really want to get better and actually play against other people. there’s a super active playerbase and at least another year of support from arcsys on the way. the best time to start playing strive was a year ago but the second best time is right now.
Tumblr media
Idol Showdown (Free)
yes im shilling a free game here. idol showdown is a good fighting game and the result of like three years of hard work from a small team. try it out and give them some love
Tumblr media
Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel ($4.99)
this is not a good game but it is a funny game. saber is in it.
Narrative Games
Tumblr media
AI: The Somnium Files - $7.99
one of the finest mystery games you can play imo. maybe uchikoshi’s best work. a perfect blend of mystery, character, and style. every character and conversation is compelling in its own way and every little thing builds up to the huge moments which makes them all feel totally earned. as always uchikoshi is a genius in the way he blends his signature branching timeline style with the themes and core concepts of the game. the twists and turns this game goes down are so crazy that weeks later you’ll still be realizing how all the little things you thought were just quirks were actually foreshadowing. cannot recc this enough tbh.
Tumblr media
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games - $11.99
another uchikoshi joint, also extremely good. ive only finished 999, the first game in this collection, but i can recc it just based on the strength of that alone. whereas somnium is a murder mystery, 999 is a visual novel about being trapped in a murder game interspliced with escape room segments. whatever you think you know you dont, 999 will take you down so many twists and turns you’ll be fucking dizzy when you’re done with it. big recc.
Tumblr media
VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - $10.04
i could probably talk about this game for as long as the others, even though its way way less complex. va-11 hall-a doesnt have a huge sweeping story with insane twists and massive reveals, but what it does have is an extremely personal narrative about loss, healing, and just living your life the best way you can in a horrible dystopian world. the cast of characters feel utterly real and you learn about the world they inhabit through interactions with them, rather than being infodumped by exposition. everyone has their own story and everyone is just trying to get by, including you. one of the best small scale personal narrative games ive ever played.
Tumblr media
Night In The Woods - $9.99
another vn i would consider “small scale” but equally as impactful. nitw is a story about a disillusioned and struggling college drop out returning to her economically declining home town. nobody is secure, nobody is happy, everyone is suffering through their daily lives. you follow mae as she struggled to readjust to her childhood home and the people she left behind. until something happens that changes her priorities radically. all ill say. despite how i just made it sound, nitw is not all depressing. theres lighthearted moments and wacky days to cut through the bleak fog, as well as genuinely heartfelt moments that feel very earned. nitw is a game i think that everyone struggling through their 20s should play.
Tumblr media
Grim Fandango Remastered ($3.79)
i know this is an old school adventure game and you might yell at me for sort of grouping it in with the VNs but i dont care. its a classic, its a beautiful game, everyone should play it. its old, it controls like shit, the puzzles are obtuse, but the experience is wonderful and memorable. its cheap as hell just go for it.
Action
Tumblr media
Assault Spy ($4.99)
this goofy ass game is fun as hell. its a very dmc style character action with upgrades and moves to buy, and it actually has a pretty goddamn good mechanical system in place. the gameplay loop rules. only warning is this is not well optimized so watch your computer doesnt explode.
Tumblr media
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered ($40.19)
i shouldn’t even have to shill. a must play for any spider-man fan. one the best spider-man stories ever hands down. such an incredible experience seriously. i cant even say enough here, if you haven’t played this yet you should do it asap.
Tumblr media
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales ($33.49)
everything i just said for the first game goes here too. a MUST play for miles morales fans. the combat is even better than the first too. you won’t regret playing this trust me.
Tumblr media
Marvel’s Avengers - The Definitive Edition ($5.99)
no i’m not joking. ok well i kind of am but this game is getting delisted in september. it is an unforgivably mid piece of shit but if you have an interest in game preservation or playing something so bad they’re killing it forever, well here it is. they made all the microtransactions free btw.
Others
Tumblr media
Tinykin ($13.75)
its like pikmin but its legally distinct! i like this game a lot, it has a very cute art style and its got easy to enjoy gameplay. i find it very relaxing. there’s a demo.
Tumblr media
System Shock 2 ($2.49)
i will never stop shilling this game. fucking play it. its a cornerstone of video games. one of the most influential pieces ever put to pixel. you owe it to yourself to experience this if you feel any interest in it. maybe read a guide though its unforgiving if you screw around with your build.
Tumblr media
Dead Space [2023] ($41.99)
exceptionally good. i dont have to shill the old shitty pc port of the original anymore. an A+ remake, i think it improves on the original in every conceivable way.
Tumblr media
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night ($11.99)
such a goddamn good metroidvania. its almost like the platonic ideal of a castlevania game. a true spiritual successor to SOTN. this isnt your dime a dozen soulslike vania, this is a true vania game in the best original style made by basically one of the core founders of the genre.
Tumblr media
STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II - The Sith Lords™ ($3.49)
its a fuckin classic rpg. one of the best of the era. get it on pc so you can get that extended content mod they promised to import to the console version and then cancelled.
Tumblr media
Save Room - Organization Puzzle ($2.09)
this is just a cute puzzle game. i like it.

Because y’all are so invested in my family drama (actually because I am so annoyed).
I tried to talk to my sister per my mother’s request. I rationalized it with “well maybe she has actually figured out she’s hurtful so I’ll try to hear her apology.”
This is when she tried the “I’m sorry you were hurt” and “I’m sorry I’ve made you so upset” apologies. Not apologies because they focus on my feelings and not the actions she took that lead to the feelings. It implies the issue is how I feel, not in how she acted.
I attempted to tell her how that wasn’t an apology and tried to reiterate very clearly: you invalidated me and my life experiences. You maintained that your experiences were better or more than mine and more valuable. This is disrespectful to me as a person.
She still didn’t get it. She continued to not apologize, really, claiming she HAD apologized, and demanding I apologize because by saying she has seemed stressed, tired, etc, I was trivializing her experience, when what I was doing was explaining and rationalizing to me and to our mother why I think she is particularly volatile, and why I am trying to be very kind with my words and not go for the low-blows she went for.
The low-blow involved a huge dig at our mother too so I was frank that we know what the low blow was and that it would be counterproductive to bring up the specifics again in this setting. My sister claimed to never have dealt low-blows.
So I decided nope we don’t need to do this in a chat my mom can read, if she won’t even own up to a very intentional low blow. So I texted her individually reminding her of exactly what she said and that btw I wasn’t gaslighting, I had ignored one topic (that she was repeatedly rehashing btw) to address other topics and because hey I have a shit working memory, I forgot to address it.
Because she felt manipulated and began to question her sanity, THAT was “gaslighting” to her, because the impact matters more than the intent when it comes to the language used to describe the events. We argued about the semantics of this too- my stance is connotation matters more than denotation, as “gaslighting” is very emotionally charged for us and has a connotation of malice, whereas what I did was not malicious. For me, it is very important my intent is understood- not used as an excuse to keep causing harm but understood that it is the harm was not caused maliciously, to not assign malice to my actions when malice is not there.
She wanted me to promise to never unintentionally manipulate/ “gaslight” her by blocking, diverting, or “trivializing” and to “take responsibility” without blaming my working memory because in her mind I’m using my working memory as an excuse and it’s not the actual problem, it can’t be an actual problem. I tried to say: I can promise to never intentionally manipulate, gaslight, etc, but the thing with unintentional impacts is that you don’t know and can’t anticipate them (because it’s not malicious), so it is an impossible promise. I CAN promise that when unintentional harms occur from my actions, I can apologize for those harms and seek to rectify. But nobody can get rid of unintentional harms entirely.
She didn’t like this but whatever.
Eventually she gave very half assed apologies like “I’m sorry I tried to assert boundaries, invalidating you.” First, no you did not ever say “this is a boundary and here is what I will do if you step over it.” Second, I couldn’t even tell what the boundary was? Are you saying that the boundary is that you will not concede two people can experience the world differently? That your boundary is to be able to repeatedly disrespect me? Idk.
She then demanded apologies from me. I am at a loss for what she thinks I need to apologize for, as I repeatedly tried to understand her emotional state and not antagonize her more than needed to assert myself. So I asked for her help to tell me what words I said or actions lead to her feelings of invalidation. What I heard from her was basically “you didn’t think I have more experience than you” “you didn’t agree with my experience of what kinds of communication people like” and my personal favorite “you gaslit me by maintaining your positions.” I tried to reflect these back to her (in less judgmental language) to ask if I am hearing her right. She said no. I asked her to please help correct what I got wrong. She just said I was once again invalidating her. She has not said anything back.
I figured we were not getting anywhere really, because not only are her apologies still inappropriate and she has not shown any belief she was in the wrong here at all, she seems to want me to concede that I am not her equal, that I am beneath her, and I refuse to do that. Since this whole mediation was so important to mom, I texted her to say look I’m trying, this is where we ended up, i am doubting that this is salvageable right now and maybe ever, but if you think I am asking too much to be seen as an equal and that my experiences can be valid too, let me know. (I do not think it is too much, if she expects that of me then I have bigger family problems)
My mom decided to essentially say that I may not get this but I have to just focus on being okay with however my sister sees and treats me, that she has been doing this in general lately and it’s working for her.
And I honestly lost it. I gave out a very long response that:
Family is not blood but the people you trust in your inner circle, based on mutual respect, seeking each others betterment, need fulfillment, willingness to sacrifice wants for said need fulfillment, etc. Not “I was born into this” or “these people raised me or were raised with me.”
I have been repeatedly emotionally abused by my sister. When I was young I dished it back out. In my adult life I have tried to just accept it and manage my feelings about it, but abuse no matter what is damaging and I am being hurt by it.
My methods of managing my feelings related to her abuse are running thin as she is completely incapable of recognizing her abuse and is now putting it on me: if I call her out and ask for respect, she claims I am abusing her.
I am hurt by her implication that I should continue to take my sister’s abuse and just let it happen.
I have been asked to ignore my needs for others in the family repeatedly. I did take a lot in my adolescence and had very high needs so maybe I just took too much then, but I also think some of my very high needs back then we’re because my needs were ignored when I was even younger.
I am unsure if she really has felt safe asserting all of her needs and question if because she ignores her needs for others, she expects me to do the same.
She can claim this works for her but I have seen resentment in her for this. I have also seen her work on her resentment, but she does not consider that she could change the situation, only her thoughts, to manage the feeling. [implication that I didn’t outright say: if a situation repeatedly leads to resentment, your resentment may not be the “bad” thing that needs to be changed but the warning bells that you need a different situation]
Abuse is absolutely never okay and you cannot just will yourself to be okay with it. It is always damaging and will be damaging to even the strongest and most self assured person.
I will not tolerate abuse from anybody.
If somebody I see as family continues to abuse me, they are NOT my family. If the abuse is unintentional, I can consider opening back up for them once they work on their shit and understand they were abusive and actually apologize for said abuse. But I will not give them access to me to continue to abuse me.
My mom texted me back but I haven’t read it yet. It’s just crazy to me that I have to assert and remind them that hey, emotional abuse is happening, it’s been happening to me for as long as I can remember, I’m not absolved of any guilt and have been abusive at times too but to avoid constant contention I allowed myself to just be a whipping post, and now that I actually respect and love myself, I refuse to let that happen again. And that putting your foot down and being able to say “no you cannot abuse me” IS strength. And that ABSOLUTELY NOBODY should be expected to tolerate abuse, especially not just because they are family.

talking about "dehumanization" but basically dehumanizing anyone who disagrees with these lunatics.
another reason they flood western countries because of the ridicously high amount of free stuff they get in these countries.
I feel like before playing the good samaritan they should fix up shit in their own countries over sending help to other countries.
being constantly pushed to help others and guilt tripping people will eventually lead to people pushing back because if you keep blaming people they will stop listening.
And to me it often feels like everyone screaming about it on the internet as well as putting flags in their bio is just virtue signalling to show "look at how good I am" to other leftists
Tumblr media
Responses to this post and this post. BTW......why did questioninqthings put their blog on password lock?
Posting these two asks together. Yesterday, I received them hours apart, and I believe they kind of relate to each other due to a certain radical leftwing bullying culture we've been subjected to in fandom since internet began. Leftists are desperate to be seen as good people. They act as if they are the Holy Crusaders of Light, whereas the opposition are for certain demons who deserve to be crushed. Remember when they were all like, "PUNCH NAZIS!!1!!1". Actual Nazis are rare and have no impact on anything compared to the relevant terrorist groups, but the useful idiot cause head statists aren't talking about actual Nazis......
Tumblr media

Today is Good Friday, the day when Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for the sins of the world, then three days later, rose from the dead. Absent the mercy of God sending His only son to die for our sins, every single human being that has ever existed and will exist is trash and deserves to burn in hell. One sin is as good as another, and without Jesus, there would be no theoretical Noah's Ark that would save a few. Nope. Every last mf-er on earth would rot.
-But in a worldly sense, some sins ARE considered worse than others. The shit-flinging anti harpies could see it like shipping identical twins on Tumblr is actually keeping me out of trouble! I could be doing worse things, like blowing my money at a casino boat, stabbing my grandmother to death for drug money, raping a child, shoving an innocent person onto the subway tracks because of their race, punching a random person in the face because of their ideology, etc....etc.... Instead, I'm just sitting here not hurting anybody by thinking twins are hot because they are identical. If someone is into twins because of the taboo of sibling incest, then that's fine too. They are also not hurting anybody in a irl way.
Leftists like to accuse white people of racism nonstop, but there's a big difference between saying something racist and doing something racist, such as slamming a person's head into the concrete because they are white. The radical left is guilty of putting out nonstop propaganda that encourages non-white people to commit violent actions against white people. Critical Race Theory has taught black people to believe white people are the cause of all their problems, so they're all riled up into gang beating and murdering whites, both in the school and on the street. There are hundreds of hours of documented attacks supporting this, even though our statist leftwing Pravda media covers it up and spews 24/7 propaganda still pushing the fallacious narrative that 'right wing groups are the greatest terror threat' even though there is little or no video evidence supporting this.
Tumblr media
Same could be said about clowns pushing this 'white people are racist and don't humanize Palestinians' crap. Do you think this makes Arabs love us when they flood into Western world countries? Aren't nonwhite countries responsible for importing the fentanyl that is killing us by the tens and hundreds of thousands? (-But somehow it's not being considered terrorism) -Or do you think there might be hundreds of hours of video footage showing Arabs beating and murdering white people, in between receiving unlimited welfare and basically being subsidized to outbreed us, while native white people are being crushed under the burden of high taxes in socialist countries that don't give enough in return.

Work venting
My shift lead has such a bad case of main character syndrome 🙄 she'll walk out at the end of the day and look people straight in the eye and deadpan say she's going to kill herself, then burst out laughing. Or deadpan say she's about to go home and drink wine straight out of the bottle and then same thing, burst out into laughter. But then has the audacity to get a dark look on her face when somebody twice her age makes an extremely quick-witted joke about how she makes him want to self-harm (literally hilarious because same) and then lecture him about how "I have friends who... *shakes head* I can't. It's not even funny."
Girl, you make suicide jokes at work literally constantly, you have zero high ground to stand on. And do you actually think a 60-something year old man whose mom is upstairs literally dying has never also gone through it or had friends going through it? Do you truly think you are the poor lonely singular person in existence who shoulders the burden of all the world's horrors? Grow some theory of mind, who hasn't been impacted by suicide or whatever, honestly?
(Also if somebody at work is being blasé about ~dark topics~ and you are their lead, the appropriate course of action is to gently redirect and also to check in on their well-being, because uh who do you think makes those jokes in the first place, my fucking god your leadership is crap it's not about you except for the part where we all want to throttle you because you're so fucking bad at your job. Guilt-tripping is about your feelings, whereas leadership is about taking responsible action.)
ETA: Also when I say main character syndrome, like... She got this huge Harry Potter tattoo and when people who don't care about Harry Potter didn't react with delighted glee, she would do this huge gasp of horror and then start explaining what every object was and quizzing them on them, like "do you know what this is? This is the symbol of the Deathly Hollows! It means--" yeah okay see this is why you don't get anything done. ✨ Sometimes other people will simply not share your interests and if that's threatening to you then perhaps you should stop coercing people into engaging with you about them ✨ cannot emphasize enough how this took place with us in a locked room and her standing in the door

So I'm still neck-deep in Genshin hell- I recently conquered Liyue and I'm making preparations to finally head to Inazuma- and I wanted to talk a bit about this game's storytelling; Cause as much as I'm enjoying it, there's a big problem I have with the way it handles its story: retroactive predestination. Too many of its quests will have some kind of reveal at the end that one of your allies planned for everything that happened during the quest and you've been unknowingly following someone else's script the whole time. You'll come out of a pitched battle with a fierce enemy or track down a dark secret that needs to be brought to light, and instead of letting you feel the pride of conquering a difficult challenge, Albedo or whoever shows up to say "Yep, I knew this would happen all along and was fully prepared for it, thanks for carrying out my carefully laid plan for me." It really sucks the impact out of the adventure you just went on, cause now it feels like that wasn't actually your adventure, it was someone else's victory that you were just a tool in.
And it's weird how often it happens. Not just in the main quest, but quite a few character quests as well. I want to feel like I'm the one progressing in this world and earning my place within it, but the game is constantly turning you into a passive actor in other people's narratives. I know we're a mostly mute protagonist and all, but you can have a blank slate player character who still gets to drive the narrative through their actions. And Genshin seems strangely reluctant to let you share in that creation. It builds its story and characters around you while keeping you at arm's length from them, a gorgeous and immersive setting that you're only occasionally allowed to feel a part of. That's why all my favorite moments have been based around my own exploration, finding treasure chests and beating time challenges, cause that's the part of my game experience that I do contribute to. I am the one combing this gorgeous landscape over and uncovering all its secrets. Whereas with the story, I far too often feel like my involvement is a secondary concern to the game.
On the other hand, I did just shoot an elder god in the face with a fuckton of magic ballista arrows, so I can't complain too much.

Weird Questions for Writers
…All.
Tumblr media
Alright, everyone else go home, I guess. I'll be doing this in stages over the next couple of days because, as much as I enjoy talking about myself, I do still have to write this afternoon. Thank you!
What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting?
Basic Times New Roman, more out of familiarity than anything. I keep meaning to try the Comic Sans trick that supposedly makes it easier to focus, but I don't know if I can bear to look at that all day.
2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil?
I don't relish the thought of those wrist cramps, but yes, I think I would. I can't stand the thought of just keeping it all in my own head.
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?
I usually end up doing it early afternoon, after lunch and a few minutes of pacing or stretching to clear my head. I'll also play with my cat for a while beforehand, as if he's tired from being a fearsome hunter he's less likely to get up on the clackboard to help me (results may vary). Then I procure something to drink, pick out something to listen to, and freewrite some word association for a bit if I'm not in the right headspace.
While I have a vague goal in mind for where I'd like to write up to, these days, I only make myself do a single sentence per day. It's usually much more than that, but just that sentence absolutely has to happen every single day if it's really all I can manage. When I'm done, I try to leave at a point I'm actively excited to get back to and have a clear picture, so it's easier to pick up the next day. Usually I jot down a few notes to help.
It's cursed because a lot of the music I enjoy probably is, and because the aforementioned notes have sometimes been things like "toilet paper" or "[character] on her Caravaggio bullshit" and I'm left just sitting there trying to work out what any of this was in reference to, or why Past Froze thought it was going to be helpful.
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Susurrus. I try to limit it to one use per story, and maybe one per chapter if I'm feeling extra indulgent.
5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true?
Not a superstition I actively believe, but every time I think a fic might do well it's met with silence, whereas the ones I assume are for me and an audience of three end up performing way better than expected. I don't judge success on external factors and will write what I want to say regardless, but it's a nice reminder that whatever niche oddness you're cooking up might have more of an audience than you realise.
6. What is your darkest fear about writing?
It's more a fear about myself, which is that my ability or lack thereof to execute an idea doesn't matter, because what I have to say in the first place is of no interest or value whatsoever and no amount of minutely crafted phrasing can change that. (Needless to say, I would never think this of another person, no matter what they were trying to tell me.)
7. What is your deepest joy about writing?
That I do it anyway. That, regardless of how it does or doesn't impact on the world outside of me, I experienced something that made me feel strongly enough to take the time to attempt to recreate it in words. And when, after minutes that feel like hours of agonising over which words to use, I find some that hit the exact resonance and well of allusion I was hoping for? It's about the most accomplished I've ever felt.
8. If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go?
I'd choose the all-dialogue option because that would be a bigger challenge for me, and also because I have a great model for how to do it in The Fall by Camus. So I'd reread that and pick apart how it was done in a way that worked; I can picture the setting of the novel so clearly even though it's only described in ways that feel naturalistic for characters who are walking through it. I'm guessing this would remain a shorter piece, and I'd have a specific reason for zooming in so completely on what's being said to the exclusion of all else, and I think this would be a great medium for an unreliable narrator. The negative space around what isn't said would have to be as intrinsic a part of the story as anything that makes it onto the page. I think it'd be a really interesting experiment, some time.
9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know
I believe many, many people have experienced things we currently (and most certainly always will) lack the scientific method to understand and quantify. I'm about ninety percent sure I had a premonition once. I also believe what we say and do resonates, in ways that are hard to track and trace, beyond the moment where they occur. I'm not sure whether this means I believe there's a non-corporeal part of us all that lingers after the physical body reaches its planned obsolescence, and that sometimes this remnant is able to reach out and touch the living from time to time, but it's something.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
At least a fragment of everything I've ever read or written lives under my skin. Even if I hated it or even if I can't remember anything about it besides that splinter that stood out the most. All I've lived - and not lived, especially when I might have had the chance to - is waiting over my shoulder and following me along the corridor, whether as a warning or a tormentor or a guide.

Hi friends. Remember how I said I could write an essay about c!Tom Syndicate and his characterization.
guess what I did LMAO
Ted talk below ft. My personal interpretation of Tom’s Mianite character in mainly S1 and a little into S2 based on how I perceive his actions and interactions -
Disclaimer: If I feel off the mark it's possible, and if you disagree with what’s said, that's also totally fine.  I’ve never watched the entirety of Tom’s POV, I aim to someday and will inevitably add onto this. Also. All mentions of characters refer exclusively to the RP-verse, none of this pulls into consideration dynamics of the irl CCs, ofc.
-or, me overanalyzing what drives him, why he comes off as solely and only “evil and chaotic” (despite being a lot more complex than that) and how the difference in the dynamics of devotion make the killing Dianite at the end of S1 all the more impactful, as it directly influenced how he perceives relationships with others through the season, and drove the change in dynamics with the others through S2.
From the start, we come to know two universal truths about Tom’s dynamic with his god in Season 1- 1) Dianite, as the god of Evil is ruthless, and isn’t forgiving when Tom messes up, and 2) Tom’s loyalty lies in whoever will reward him the best regardless of whatever he need go through, even if those promises of glory are empty.
So, like, while it’s kind of defined that while Jordan's devotion (and borderline 'blind faith'; but a topic for a different essay) gets him adoration and love from his goddess, when Tom is devoted to his god, he gets gifts. Every time he kills for his god, or completes a task of some sort, Dianite awards him with fancy armor and swords and stuff and the like. And when he’s failed, those things get taken away. What this does is create in his head the concept of a ‘devotion transaction,’ where loyalty, love and affection is something you have to earn the right to hold onto; and can be stripped away at any time. I think this act alone is what shapes Tom's whole relationship with love and loyalty; and shaped the dynamics of his relationships to a type of dependence and a constant need to prove himself to maintain those ties.
Or alternatively, the only way to stay close to someone is to do everything in your power to keep their favor, lest you be smitten down, or worse, abandoned completely. This plays into whereas Jordan's devotion to Ianite is a ‘I will do anything for you even if it kills me or may not be for the greater good because I love you so much I trust your every word’, (becoming a love language of acts of service out of unconditional love) Tom’s devotion comes more from a place of fear to appease or be killed because Dianite has him in a literal-metaphorical death grip, translating into his love language of overwhelming clinginess to what material and emotional ties he has and lashing out when it feels like those he can depend on are against him and seem to be trying to sever those ties (World War Mianite).
The lashing out could also be a thing he picked up from Dianite who does that when Tom seems to be betraying him, but I don’t particularly want to get too much into that. The bottom line is mainly that he hates being alone, he hates having no one to depend on, and that notion alone is enough to make him take desperate measures.
Because despite wanting to be a lone wolf, or so badly to be on his own, he needs other people to survive, just like he needs Dianite to survive. On his own, one could say he’s kinda pathetic /lh, unrealizing how much his friends actually lift him up from that.
I can’t remember who put it how, but I really align towards the idea that Tom isn’t inherently a bad person, nor intentionally wants to be the villain of the story- He just wants to have fun in the end. However, he’s so dependent on his god because in a way Dianite acts as his lifeline, the guy who picked him up because he wasn’t Mianite’s kind of champion in the same way that Tucker was, Dianite's the guy who helps him out when the ‘good guys’ are only ever against him. Almost in a way he leans on Dianite, he puts his devotion before most other things even if it means putting aside fucking around times because if he can't prove himself to his god, then it opens up the possibility that everything he's depending on could go away. His god is not merciful, his god could drop him at a moment's notice, and he'd have to be godless among his peers who have Mianite and Ianite (respectively) behind them to back them up. And Tom wouldn't have anyone. This of course, not to say that he thinks that Jordan, Tucker, and Sonja, etc. are solely and only against him (and don't care about him) but more so that at the beginning, he cares more about self-preservation in an anarchy server dominated by war then necessarily accepting that his friends don't want to kill him at every turn. It isn’t till the end of the season when we see that shift, and how that builds towards his infamous betrayal of his god.
So that reliance on Dianite, and focus on what Dianite wants versus his own needs/the need to connect better with his friends (who he is taught by Dia are only against him because of who he follows'') translates into the "overexaggerated evil chaos destruction" that became his primary character archetype where instead of the chaos being fueled primarily by his own funky little brain, he basically does all that he does to appease Dia and keep the god on his side, and ultimately keep him alive. Because from a nuanced perspective, it’s not really that he’s following Dianite, he’s Dianite’s mercenary- or, instead of it being a “we help each other out”, its a “you do my dirty work” kinda thing. That difference in dynamic ends up isolating himself from the rest of TR also then giving him that validation that yes, he can be independent from those Mianite plebs and 'doesn't need nobody' (ironically all while continually being unconsciously chained to Dianite) However as the season progresses (and in my personal headcanon involving Syndisparklez) his attention starts to shift once he realizes that he belongs to that group just as much as Jordan, or Sonja does despite being on the opposite side of Mianite and Dianite’s feud. And unlike Dianite, they indulge on his wanting to just have fun and mess around, versus the “everything is a puzzle piece falling together in working towards some specific end goal and every little mess up only sets us back” mindset that Dianite imparted through the way he defined devotion when it came to his champion. And once he starts to slowly accept that kinder reality and hang more with his friends (god alignments aside), he loses that emotional and material tie to Dianite (but never loses the dependency of never wanting to be on his own) and starts to depend more on his friends, clinging to them as he had wanted to, involving himself with more things they did because it gave him a space to just be him.
And it is this arc of moving away from "fighting for his god to prove himself so that he's always being there for him” into ‘wanting to prove himself to his friends to show he does care and that everything not be a turf war'' that feeds into the impact of the cumulative event of him killing Dianite at the end of S1. It serves as a literal act of severing any ties he had with devotion and putting the ties between him and his friends at the forefront. At the same time, it symbolically visualizes Tom pulling himself away from Dianite’s grip, telling himself he doesn’t need Dianite: he is capable of pulling off chaotic stunts on himself, able to hold his own against the Mianitees and Ianitees, and isn’t just some pathetic little bastard man that was pulled out of the ground. And the by becoming Mecha-Dianite, Tom essentially becomes a pseudo-physical manifestation of his liberation from Dianite's chains where he doesn't have to depend on anyone. He can depend on himself, he is capable and he doesn't need to drive himself into the ground trying to prove his worth.
In season 2 when Dianite comes back, Tom has this different sense of self about him, because this Dianite is different, and he’s different. He holds onto the Mecha-Dia status like a badge of honor; he won’t fear this god. And he finds eventually he doesn’t have to. This Dianite isn’t inherently "evil", in fact, he’s near opposite. He still rewards Tom, but not in the way S1 Dianite did where he was breathing over Tom’s shoulder just waiting for him to inevitably fail some specific mission; in fact, since he’s dead he’s barely there. S2! Dianite also has greater affections to Mot, whom he treats more so how Ianite treats Jordan, where loyalty-devotion translates into genuine love. And in a way I think that fact plus his newfound separation from the notion that he needs his god to survive prevents him from falling back into old mindsets. Instead, he redirects a similar, but different emotional dependency from what should've gone to his god, now to Jordan (in not necessarily a romantic sense, despite what my normal behavior on this account might suggest).
Because even though he might have persona-autonomy, and isn't bound to a single individual defining his worth, he's still not someone who thrives on complete and utter independence. Tom still remains someone who needs and relies on having someone to fall back on to help him out, give him things, build things for him and so and so forth - and the need for that kind of connection continues to drives him to be so energetic and passionate for his relationships with others-- but instead of it being out of fear, it's out of affection. A kind of nuance in someone's love language where time spent together is driven not by needing it otherwise you have nothing, but clinging onto someone because they've brought into your life a "stability" (in quotes cause nothing about Tom isn't volatile) that keeps you alive, and fuels a different kind of fire. Even if he can't prove he's the best to them, it doesn't really matter anymore, because he needs them out of seeking a type of unconditional love since being completely alone or isolated would just drive him batshit. While a state of self-identified independence juxtaposed against emotionally dependency was so hurtful to him in the past, it has shaped into something that ended up more positive; as a way of becoming infinitely bonded to those he cares about, giving them his all and fighting with all his heart to hold onto them.
if you made it this far. thanks for reading my brain worms ily smooch smooch /p <333

Why Formula 1 is the best sport ever- (it's a fact, deal with it)
Formula 1 has it all, speed, power, competition, rivalry but the best part has got to be the absolute complexity of the sport- complexity which I believe no other sport has or even comes near too.
Now to defend my extremely contrivertial opinion I have points (I promise I have many more arguments but not all of them can fit in one tumblr post)
So to start off I'm going to take tennis as an example. If you ever meet a tennis fan you will know in the first 5 minutes of meeting them that each one have their own favourite player or believe that a certain player is a 'goat' (and though formula 1 has the same thing), in tennis there are usually proper rankings with data to support, but in formula 1 finding out the actual "goat" is a harder and much more complicated task! Why? because here in formula 1 the performance of a driver doesn't only depend on the skill and talent of that particular driver but it also depends on their car, their strategy and their team. So on paper Lewis Hamilton is the GOAT, the man who has the most world champions, the man who has broken records like its his favourite pass time and though he is 100% one of Formula 1's greatest drivers, there is still no way of knowing whether he's the all time best driver because even if you are the best driver on the grid your car, team and strategy matter too! Formula 1 maybe considered an "individual" sport but in actuality,"it takes a village to win a F1 Race" (I mean if anything Ferraris current performance and strategy just proves my point)
Tumblr media
Secondly, the cars. When I showed my 7yr old cousin a picture of a formula 1 car he said it looked like the bones of a chicken with wheels and though I do agree, to a "normal person" (aka a person not obsessed with 20 men driving a circuit for 2 hours on a Sunday evening) the car may look odd and strange, but when you see it in action going at 200 miles per hour it looks more like a god than chicken bones but that's also the funny thing about formula 1 cars. They are undoubtedly some of the fastest cars ever made but they're also some of the most delicate ever! I mean even a tiny pebble or a piece of gravel can completely destroy the car and its motion, plus they are so much lighter than a regular car!
Number 3, The eliteness of the sport, now I know this isn't the best point if I'm trying to convince a bunch of random people on the internet to love this sport but the fact is that there are only 20 drivers in this world of 8 billion people who get to call themselves Formula 1 Drivers, so even if you absolutely hate a driver you can't really say that they're a talentless douchebag because they did make it into formula 1 (and yes this counts even for lance stroll, the kingpin of f1 nepotism) and to just prove my point I feel like the best and most recent comparison is one to the recent Wimbledon where 256 men and women (128 each) played in total whereas once again there are only 20 DRIVERS driving in formula 1!, and the eliteness too is understandable at a point, after all the risk involved in formula 1 is massive (though every sport is exceptionally risky including any sort of motorsport) formula 1 is definitely up there when we're talking about risk factor.
and now to my final point for this post, though the reasons why I love formula 1 can be deemed as uncountable I don't want to write all my posts in one, however if you're still not absolutely convinced that formula 1 is the greatest sport ever I want you to take a look at how formula 1 impacts our lives today, Formula 1 has greatly transformed and enhanced the automotive industry, ever since its introduction back in 1950! So whether it's break designs or aerodynamics, formula 1 has the technology and engineering that we will see in our cars 5 to 10 years from now, it quite literally holds the key to the future of the automotive industry.
and now you have finally come to the end, If you've made it till here then I guess you really are a real one, I hope my post didn't bore you or offend you in any sort of way (please remember that this post did not mean to harm any team, driver or other sport)
but before I bid my final farewell (for today)....
Where does a meatball go to get a massage? The Spa ghetti (I'm sorry I had to)
See u next time (with a pun MUCH worse than this) ~ writergirl.

The Real
Tumblr media
Dear Caroline:
There are times when I find myself agreeing with you wholeheartedly, and other times where your thoughts feel as alien as anything I'd expect to discover in a First Encounter with an Alien Civilization. Not that these times prove any less interesting and engaging than the first ones, though; rather, they help strike a balance between the familiar/narcissistic and the quarky/spell of strange charm which you have cast upon me.
My school of thought is of the 'obviously, yes', which shouldn't strike you as odd, just as your utilitarian inclinations are what I have come to expect. You reach what I would call the right answer for what I'd feel are the wrong reasons, though.
Like, there was this recent posting in the EA Forum about a triad of radical ideas that are at the core of the movement, and I found myself liking and agreeing with all three, and yet I would have added a personal commitment to truthfulness and the search for Truth with a non utilitarian flavor, that is: you tend to value truth for its useful and practical consequences, whereas I value it as an absolute moral good in itself, with complete disregard for the effects. And I am not at all for experience machines, except perhaps for brief spells of distraction and retreat from reality. Actually, we already have such a machine -our night dreams-, even if we can't quite tune it to our desires.
As in the case on the argument that is usually presented against the Transplant Surgeon Objection, your choice seems to come about from the long-term, this-worldly limitations. And yet after that you come around to arguments from freedom and agency that are precisely the ones that make abhorrent the hedonic pleasure machine. Because we actually care for the truth, for others and for having a real impact on trying to improve the world and exert some action in the right and effective direction. Or not, of course, if you are a strict pain/pleasure utilitarian (but which I doubt anybody is 100%, as I feel we are all somewhere along the continuum).
Quote:
What matters to us, apart from consequences, are certain background conditions that the experience machine does not satisfy, and that we cannot ignore even for a moment without severe loss to our well-being.

Retrospective Review: Jurassic Park III (2001)
I was not a fan of this movie when I had watched it as an 11 year old in 2001. I didn't like that Alan and Ellie weren't together, I didn't like that the Spino defeated the T-rex, I didn't like the new characters, and I didn't like how short it was. So it was a fairly pleasant surprise when I watched this film after a long while and I ended up quite enjoying it. Its definitely 3rd best in the JP trilogy, but its certainly not as bad as I remember it to be.
I think what works for the film watching it again is its brevity. Unlike the previous two films which dealt with themes of man trying to play god with science and how that backfires, or corporate greed leading to terribly misguided actions, this film is very straightforward. This is a Dinosaur action movie. The film essentially just puts characters on the Island and then its one Dinosaur set piece after another with the thing story strand of the group of characters trying to rescue a stranded kid from the Island. I think if this film had stretched the same content to 2 hours like the other movies, then it would have felt too long and drawn out. The film does the necessary setup quite quickly. It establishes the reason the boy is stranded on the Island, though I still am not sure what exactly happened to the people on the boat in the opening scene because the film never explicitly explains it. Then it establishes where Alan Grant is and his financial situation in the research and it doesn't take long for the two parents to hoodwink Alan and his student Billy, off to Isla Sorna. Once the characters are on the island, the action is non stop.
There are some pretty good Dinosaur action sequences. The first Spino sequence is fairly terrifying. I like the final Spino sequence in the river, with the fire. That's probably the best of the Spinosaurus sequences. I think my favorite overall Dinosaur sequence is the Birdcage scene with the Pteranodons. That is probably the best staged action sequence in the film and that's the portion of the film where the CGI/animatronic blend is at its best. The film also has an interesting thread about Raptor intelligence, which is carried forward in JW films. That's the one element of the film which has carried on in the franchise. Whereas TLW didn't really use the Raptors other than as monsters in the 2nd act climax, this film uses them in a bit specific manner. I quite liked the Alan and Billy dynamic in the film. Its always great to have Alan Grant but I did feel that Billy was pretty identifiable, even if he makes a really stupid mistake. The film actually takes away from his noble sacrifice in the Pteranodon by bringing him back inexplicably at the end. I also think Eric was decent. Resourceful and not one who has to be constantly rescued, barring in one scene. Also was nice to see Ellie back, albeit briefly. While I was sad that Alan and Ellie weren't together, I did like how their was still a closeness between them.
The film definitely has a fair share of issues. Certainly this is the most thinly plotted of the Jurassic movies so far. There is no real story based impact of this movie to the rest of the franchise. There is no connection to InGen and no real conversation about how the rest of the world is dealing with the revelations of TLW barring one lecture scene. It does make the film feel a bit empty. Also, from a technical standpoint, its obvious that Joe Johnston was not as smart as Spielberg when it comes to presentation of the Dinosaurs. Whereas Spielberg knew his limitations with CGI and used shadow and darkness expertly to make the Dinosaurs seem real, almost all of the Dinosaur sequences in this movie are in broad daylight and the CGI definitely shows. The Spino animatronic also looks like an animatronic with limited movement in some sequences. It just doesn't look as scary as the T-Rex. The film also makes the Spino seem like the boogeyman, chasing the main characters across the Island. They also perhaps take the Raptor intelligence angle a bit too far at times. The two parent characters are also a bit annoying, especially Tea Leoni's character, who basically screams a lot during the movie.
In terms of performances, Sam Neill back as Alan Grant is an obvious highlight. He plays an older and wearier version, but you still feel his intelligence and knowledge of the creatures. William H. Macy is solid as the father, though the character is a little annoying initially but Macy is innately likable and he gets a bit of a hero moment towards the end. Tea Leoni grates on the nerves a bit. Alessandro Nivola is solid as Billy, as is Trevor Morgan as Eric. The film doesn't really offer much scope to anyone else.
Joe Johnston does a decent enough job directing this film. Its obvious that he doesn't quite have the mastery of Spielberg, but then again, who does, but he wisely keeps the pace of the film tight. Stand Winston's animatronics and ILM works is strong for the most part. Its essentially a fairly breezy and enjoyable 92 minutes or so, but its just not particularly memorable. For me, this ranks around a 6.5/10.
