SOMEONE somewhere lied to me about the size of Blue Jays. I thought they were like….. mockingbirds but blue. I thought they were roughly the same size as a cardinal. But those things are HUGE.

Personality
Trudy is a young girl with sociability and good nature. Her attitude towards people depends on how they treat her: if they show a positive attitude towards her, she is a little stubborn. Even so, Trudy is not so trusting, so she does not immediately open up to the interlocutor. Trudy sometimes experiences moments that can cause irritation. And in such cases, she can flare up, allowing her emotions to come out. However, she tries to control her emotions so as not to show them to other people. But Trudy's weakest side is her worries. Everything that she experiences inside herself, she tries to hide from others.
Fears
🔥Pyrophobia🔥is a phobia consisting in a constant, irrational, obsessive, panic fear of fire, fires; an obsessive fear of burning alive, getting burned, or losing property as a result of a fire. (in one of the missions, she almost burned herself in the room in which she was locked, losing consciousness)
Biography
Trudy's parents live in the Czech Republic for most of their lives, they have successfully established their lives in another country, and we can say they have lived in it for most of their lives, and did not want to return to England. Adele Saidler (Hofmann) has opened her own atelier in Liberec, where they now live. The woman is engaged in custom tailoring, previously she was specialized in sewing military uniforms. Philip Saidler is a former infantryman, retired for health reasons, retired, but he helps his wife in the atelier, delivering sewing materials. He also earns a living on the outskirts of the city, but there is no information about his place of work. Before Trudy, they had a son, Evan Saidler [date of birth unknown, died as a teenager, cause of death unknown]. The couple suffered a hard loss, and were very worried about their daughter, who knows about her late brother.
Trudy's childhood, like that of ordinary children, was no different from them. She also had her own hobbies, which her parents reacted positively to, and supported their daughter in every possible way, most importantly. The girl was actively engaged in dancing from the age of 12, from which she developed flexibility, there were even performances on behalf of the school. She also loved to help her mother in the atelier, more often looked after the counter, and thus engaged in needlework, she could also sew some clothes with jewelry. In addition to dancing, Trudy also had hobbies, which she does not mention.
During her student years, Trudy met a girl who was 1 year younger than her, Linda Kovac (Czech). She was always an inconspicuous gray mouse, but Trudy became friends with her on the first day they met, and spent more and more time together. Thanks to her, Linda began to gain self-confidence and even changed her style in order not to fall into the gray mass and stand out somehow. Saidler never sought to attract attention, preferring to wear comfortable and not too bright clothes, and studied like all ordinary students. She needed Czech to learn, so even at preschool age she learned this language, English is considered the main one.
There have been mistakes in Trudy's life, one of them has undermined people's trust. As a student, a guy was in love with her, and he sought her attention in every possible way. The student's infatuation, yes, did not last long. This guy dated her for a joke, enjoyed her trust. After receiving her education, Trudy left Liberec and went to England. After living there for some time, she went to Credenhill, where the selection for group 141 was held. During the trip, Trudy heard other recruits talking about this group, and who is in it, quite big names sounded from the mouths of the guys, which made her interested. Arriving at their base, Trudy did not expect to see the members of the 141 group live. At the time, Captain McTavish was in charge of the selection, and he took up her training in order to make Saidler an experienced fighter. As a rookie, she was sent for additional training to improve her skills and adapt to work in group 141. During her stay at the base, Trudy met Roach, a young sergeant whom she saw on the day of her arrival. At first, things didn't go very well due to distrust, so we gradually communicated. Jay showed a special interest in Roach as a person and wanted to get to know him better, and thus she awakened trust in him. Roach also showed interest in the girl and communicated with her even from a distance. Trudy was very afraid of attachment to people, and hid her sympathy until the last moment, Roach had the same feelings for her. They gradually showed warm feelings for each other.
Participation
Jay began his service under the command of Captain McTavish, took his first part in the Hunting mission, where the goal was to catch Alejandro Rojas, worked in a group with Roach. In the future, she participated in assaults at certain points, provided cover, engaged in inconspicuous liquidation

The history of the creation of the OC
In 2011, I played with COD Modern warfare 2 for the first time. This game has left vivid moments in my memory, from joyful to sad, my favorite mission is "Rock Climber". At that moment, the first character appeared in my head. Since I couldn't draw at the age of 9, I was building a plot in my head. There is an important point, this is the date when I started playing and when I came up with Trudy. This is June 1, 2011, and this date is also Trudy's date of birth.
In her first version, there was no first or last name, I just called her "Emersan", this call sign is taken from another game that I also actively played. As for her appearance, Trudy looked different, not like she does now. In 2018, I visually sketched her portrait, hoping for my memory. Based on this, I decided to change her appearance, and also attached my old works. As time went on, I always wanted to add something, it seemed to me that Trudy was too simple. Although yes, she really was like that. Then, during the redrawing, I already gave her a name. Her name was Trudy "Emersan" Sombra. She later became Jay, the new surname is Saidler. Trudy's redesigns didn't last long, so I changed it again by drawing new references. You can see that she has hardly changed since 2019, there are small changes on her face – freckles and hair color have become darker. Next comes the tattoo. It was a difficult choice, I came up with the first tattoo myself, then I made another, more complex one. The final version was drawn in 2023, and received a reference

Several Missed Calls and a Sprained Ankle || Jay Halstead x Halstead Sister one shot
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly delated my blog 🫠
Also appearing Will and Connor Rhodes because I miss him.
I'm not a doctor, medical topics are vague.
Friendly reminder that Becca is Halstead sister.
The Intelligence squad had just came back to the bullpen with a suspect in custody when Sergeant Platt came inside to interrupt whatever they were having.
-"Hey, Halstead! I've been receiving calls from your sister's school all day. They said they called your father, but didn't answer, so she asked them to look for you, but your phone was off".
-"I was in a UC run, I always turn the personal off...". He tried to explain himself with guilt.
-"That's what I tried to explain to them. Apparently she's injured and needs to be picked up as soon as possible".
-"Wh-what happened?" He hadn't even finished taking off his jacket and now he was hastily putting it back on.
-"They didn't elaborate on the matter, but they've been calling like crazy every half hour. I even volunteered to go and bring her here, but they did say it would be impossible if I'm not in the list". She pulled a face with that last statement. -"Can you believe that?"
Everybody settled in at the bullpen, all detectives listening to the conversation.
-"Boss..." Jay looked at Voight.
-"Sure, go. What are you waiting for?". He ordered with his arms crossed. -"We can take care of this".
Jay nodded his head as saying "thank you" and walked himself down to the parking lot trying to look chill, although on the inside he was really unsettled for whatever had happened to his little sister. He couldn't avoid being the overprotective big brother, it ran through his veins.
-"Hey, Detective. Make sure you put my name in that freakin' list!". Platt yelled before he crossed the door. -"I don't want to feel so humiliated again". She said in her usual exaggerated way. Then she muttered to herself: I'm a CPD Sergeant, who dares to say 'no' to me like that?
The long road to Becca's school in Canaryville wasn't helpful to ease Jay's mind. He was also feeling abashed for not being able to answer the call on time, although he was not responsible for attending those emergencies, therefore he was not aware of them. And where the hell was his father? Why didn't he answer those calls from school? He cursed him. This wasn't the first time something like this happened.
-"I'm here to pick my sister, Becca Halstead".
-"Oh, sure. We've been calling you for hours. Literally hours". The secretary gave him a judging look, which Jay tried to ignore. -"She's upstairs, the nurse is accompanying her. I'll notify her you're here. Follow me".
Jay followed the woman through the halls of the school until they went outside to the back yard. From the second floor of the building in front of them, he recognized Becca's ginger blonde hair. She was leaning on someone else to walk, looked like she couldn't do it by herself and there was some pain in her tiny face.
-"What happened?" Jay asked without taking his eyes off her.
-"She sprained her foot on the stairs, she didn't roll or hit her head, so there was no need to call an ambulance. It was an accident, some kids were playing around and pushed her unintentionally. We already took action on the matter, don't worry about that".
He walked upstairs to help his sister. As soon as he was able to entirely see her, he noticed how her foot was in the air, shoe untied.
-"Jay!" Becca said with relief.
-"It's all right". The secretary told the nurse. -"Her brother will handle it from here".
-"Is it your ankle? You can't put your foot down at all?"
-"No, it really hurts". Becca moved her head from one side to another.
-"It's a little bit swollen". The nurse talked. -"I applied ointment and ice for the pain, but I can't really do anything else in here. I think it's just a sprain, but she should be checked at the hospital".
-"Yes, I'll take her straight to The Med. Thank you!"
Jay took his badge and gun from his hips and placed them somewhere else in his jeans.
-"Sorry". He said, feeling the alarmed gaze of the two women. Then, he took the girl's backpack and put it on his shoulder. -"All right, Becs. Come here".
Jay hugged Becca and lifted her to carry her down the stairs. It was very easy for him, light weight, the girl was smaller than an average 10 years old. She placed her arms around her brother's shoulder.
-"Take care, Beckie". The nurse waved goodbye as she was taken by the detective.
-"This is so embarrassing". She said looking around to check if somebody was watching them, but the yard was empty, everyone was inside of the classrooms. Jay couldn't resist to laugh a bit. It was a cute funny scene: a big, tall, muscular man with a girly purple backpack hanging from his shoulder and a girl with an embarrassed face in his arms.
He didn't put her down until they were back to the office, where he had to sign some papers before leaving.
-"Is that all?" Jay asked.
-"Yes, you can take her now".
-"Oh! Before I forget". He said turning around one more time to the reception. -"I want to add another person to the list of people who can pick her up".
-"Sure. She does need that". She didn't miss the chance to look at him with a judgy face. -"What's the name of the one?".
-"Trudy Platt". He smirked. Becca just gave him a look.
At the truck, Jay placed her in the co-pilot seat and then opened the back door to put the backpack away.
-"What do you carry in this? Rocks?" He freed his shoulder from the weight.
Becca wasn't a talkative girl, but still she was unusually quiet during the road to the hospital. She only broke the silence to groan in pain, that's when he noticed her teary eyes.
-"Does it hurt?" Jay asked, knowing the answer.
-"Yes. I think it's getting worse".
-"We're almost there, just hang up a little bit".
He wanted to ask Becca about how she had fallen, since his detective instincts knew that it was due to something more than an accident. He opened his mouth to say something he had been holding up, but an incoming call interrupted his intentions.
-"It says Hailey Upton". Becca announced, grabbing his phone.
-"Gotta answer that". He sighed. -"Would you put it in the speaker for me, please?".
Both siblings knew each other quite well. Becca knew how Jay noticed something strange was going on, but she didn't want to be interrogated. And Jay knew how Becca was aware of that and was reluctant to speak.
-"Soooooo...Is Sergeant Platt coming to pick me now if I get sick?" She changed the conversation as soon as the call ended.
-"Is that a problem?" Jay laughed out loud.
-"Well, it's kinda scary".
-"She told me to put her name in the list, I don't know if it was true, though. The thing is that today I was on the streets working a case when all this happened. I didn't have my phone with me, that's why I didn't answer".
-"I imagined that. That's why I told them to call directly to the 21st".
-"Which was very clever of you. I'm sorry I wasn't there earlier, I should have".
-"You don't have to be sorry, I'm not blaming you for anything. You are not even supposed to be responsible for me, anyway".
She had this sort of way to make claims to his father and mother without even realizing it. That last statement made the rest of the road extremely quiet.
The moment Becca crossed the entrance door sitting in a wheelchair, she realized she had never been at The Med as a patient before. Maggie was pushing her to the ER where Will was waiting for his siblings. Due to the type of injury, Dr. Rhodes was assigned to Becca's case.
-"This is too swollen". Connor said while checking her foot. -"On a scale from 1 to 10, how much does it hurt?"
-"Uh, I don't know. Maybe 5?"
Both of her big brothers stared at her teary eyes and her sick gesture, not believing her answer. She was trying so hard not to cry.
-"6?"
-"Are you sure?" The doctor gave her a warm smile. -"I was expecting you to say 10 or maybe even beyond 10".
Becca remained silent, pressing her lips.
-"Ok. We'll do an X-Ray just to make sure it isn't more than a sprain. Meanwhile, the nurse will administer you some pain killers".
He went out of the room to order the studios and made a sign for the siblings to follow him outside, leaving their sister alone with the technicians for a few minutes.
-"What do you think?" Dr. Halstead asked.
-"I don't think she just simply twisted her ankle. For the damage, it must have been a harder impact".
-"Is it bad?" Jay asked with concern.
-"Can't tell until I see the X-Ray. What worries me the most right now is how hard she's trying to take the pain".
-"Yeah, that's something she does". Jay sighed. -"Not only with physical pain".
When the three men entered back to the room, Becca was silently crying, wiping her tears away. Jay was the one that approached to hold her. Her bruised and swollen ankle was a standout in the room.
-"Becca, you have what we call a severe grade 2 sprain and I'm pretty sure it hurts more than a lot right now. Why don't you say anything? You can complain about the pain, that's what hospitals are for".
-"I don't want to be a bother". The girl answered quietly, tears still dropping from her eyes.
-"What are you talking about?" Will walked to be close to the bed.
-"Becca...". Jay sat next to her and bent to be face to face. -"You are not a bother and you will never be".
-"It's just...I'm scared you'll stop answering the phone calls too".
In that moment, everything fell into place and Jay's heart dropped. The conversation suddenly closed to just the two of them, although everyone could hear their words.
-"Bec...I will never stop caring for you. I won't lie, sometimes it gets hard with my work, but I will do what is necessary so that something like today does not happen again. I promise".
-"But you shouldn't, like, you shouldn't be the one in charge of me. I'm a burden".
-"I know what you mean, and I know how you feel about dad, but believe me when I tell you how much it makes me happy to be here for you. I'm your big brother, it actually is my job to protect you. I love you, silly. I would never forgive myself if something happens to you. I wouldn't forgive myself if you didn't have the confidence to call me either".
With all being said and those emotions off her chest, her crying increased in tears and sound.
-"It's a 20. The pain is a 20" She managed to say in what seemed to be overacted, although it was only the natural response to having endured so much physical and emotional pain in such a short time.
-"Let's apply more pain killers". Connor talked to the nurses. -"And let's finish this up". He smiled at the little girl.
Jay found her reaction a little bit cute and couldn't resist smiling a bit when she jumped into her arms.
-"You will have to use the walking boot for at least 4 weeks". Dr. Rhodes informed when he finished. -"That if everything goes well".
-"What about dance lessons?"
-I'm sorry, Becs". -Dr. Halstead got into the conversation. -"That's going to be impossible. You need to give it a rest".
-"Not to mention the pain that would cause you".
-"Is she going to be able to be back when her ankle heals?"
-"If she listens to my recommendations in the letter, I don't see why not". Connor then turned to Becca: "I know this thing is very uncomfortable, but is necessary. You might start feeling as if you don't need it before the set time, but it is important that you do not take it off until I say so. If you trust me and you do this, You'll be fine and back to dancing soon".
Becca nodded sadly.
-"I understand this is very important to you, Becca. I can arrange to see you each week instead of two weeks to check how it is going".
-"Thank you, Connor''. His colleague said.
Becca yawned more than once on their way back to the Bullpen. She was discharged from the hospital, so she couldn't stay there and there wasn't any other place Jay could leave her. She was tired, her stressed body only wanting to rest.
-"Look at that!" Platt exclaimed when she spotted both Halsteads crossing the front door. -"It is my favorite Halstead!"
-"I'm glad to hear she's your favorite, because you are in the list now, Serge".
The Desk Sergeant smirked at the news.
-"I take this honor responsible".
-'All right, girl". Jay said, bending in front of the stairs. -"Let's do this again".
Becca hopped into her brother's back and he carried her upstairs, where all the squad greeted her with enthusiasm and good wishes. She sat in the coffee room waiting for him.
-"The punk confessed. We have enough evidence. It was an easy case, we're done for now". Voight informed Detective Halstead.
-"I'm sorry I wasn't here for interrogation, Serge. There was no one to take care of her...".
-"There's nothing to be sorry about''. Hank waved his hand from one side to another. -"Besides, you did your job, a good job capturing him. Now, you all are dismissed. You should take your sister to rest".
Detectives were able to go back home relatively early that day. The bullpen was empty when Jay went out of Hank Voight's office. There was only a blonde woman sitting at the desk in front of him.
-"Why are you still here?"
-"Your sister fell asleep on the couch. It didn't feel good to leave her alone in her condition". Hailey answered.
-"Thank you for that". He said honestly.
-"The same thing happened to me when I was a little bit older than her. I know it hurts like hell".
-"Yeah, she had a bad time. She's tired and drugged in pain killers, I should take her home".
-"Tell me if you need help with anything, I'm here. For real, partner". Detective Upton took her coat and walked herself downstairs.
-"Thanks again, Hails".
-"No problem".
It took him a while to stop staring at the stairs before going into the coffee room. There she was deeply asleep, it looked like she was melting.
-"Becca". He softly called her. -"Becca, it's time to go". But there was no answer, not even when he shaked her.
-"Well, third time's the charm. What could go wrong?" He muttered to himself and took Becca in his arms, this time as if she was a baby.

Tumblr media
Expectantly looking at the two people before him, Sergeant Voight rests his eyes on his daughter.
Trying to analyze and prepare for the choice she makes he studies her face. He studies her brown eyes, long brown hair, her beautifully square jaw and soft features. He always admired his daughter, she was a carbon copy of his late wife Camille.
Stepping back to lightly sit on the edge of his desk, Voight clasps his hands together in his lap still waiting for an answer.
Lightly chuckling out of disbelief, Cassie looks over at Jay who was still harboring the same reaction.
"Well?" Her father finally asks.
"I-I don't know." The girl says shocked.
"Sarge, don't you think it might be a little too soon, considering..." Jay interjected with his arms crossed in front of him.
"Considering everything that happened a week ago?" Voight asks assuming the rest of the other man's sentence.
"Uh, yeah." Jay says frankly.
"Well also considering we've been down a detective in the unit for a week now, and Antonio hasn't had a partner, I think now is an appropriate time to fill that spot. Look, I'm not trying to replace Willhite. That's not what's happening. Willhite was an extraordinary detective and what happened was tragic. But I would be doing a dishonor to my unit if I leave an open spot. That means we have one less person on busts, we have one less person to help solve cases, and we have one less person putting bad guys behind bars. Now, I see someone that I trust and that I have faith in to live up to Willhite's reputation and thrive in this environment. So Cassie, what do you say?" Voight looks at his daughter again who looks even more intimidated than she was the first time he offered.
A million thoughts were running through Cassie's head, and yet she still couldn’t pick one and take the job. Being a paramedic gives her a rush, its fills a hole inside her that aches to help. But so did being a police officer at one point. Yeah she fell into a routine and couldn’t commit to being a patrolman, but this is a completely different field. This is becoming a detective.
Cassie had grown up around detectives her whole life. She knew the ins and outs of how they did their job, she understood the consequences of the hours and how some cases take a larger toll than others. But she also knew the effects of being too ‘in’ on the job. How easily it is to overwhelm yourself, and completely indulge in the rush that puts the bad people away. That’s what scared her. She knew her father wasn’t around a lot when she was growing up because of this job, so a piece of her does resent it. She resents the nights they would eat dinner without him, the Sunday’s he wasn’t at church. She resented the birthday parties and minor holidays he would miss, she resented it all. One of the main reasons she hasn’t made a choice yet is because one of her biggest fears is turning into her father. But also one of her biggest goals is to do that very thing.
“I say I need a little more time.” She finally admits.
“Okay. You have two days,” Voight says standing up and walking over to his chair.
“Okay? Thats it?” She asks confused.
“That’s it. You need time, I gave you time.” He said sitting down and opening a case file.
Cassie looked at Jay again who was biting the inside of his cheek.
Looking back at her father who isn’t paying any attention to the pair now she rubbed the back of her neck.
“I- um, yeah, okay. I’ll let you know.” She said turning to walking out the door but Jay was blocking it.
Staring into space and not noticing the girl trying to leave, Jay finally moved once she cleared her throat muttering a quick ‘excuse me.’
“What was that about?” Erin asked as the pair walked out of Voight’s office catching the rest of intelligence’s attention.
Cassie walked closer to the other girl before disclosing what just happened.
“He just offered me a job.” She said emotionlessly crossing her arms and staring daggers into Lindsay’s eyes. Cassie didn’t say it loud enough for the rest of the unit to hear, but by Erin’s reaction they knew it was big.
“Are you serious!?” Erin shouted catching everyone’s attention again making Cassie’s eyes grow wide.
“Shhh,” the girl said glancing around at their audience. “C’mon.” She finally said bowing her head and walking out of the office with Erin following her.
Once they stepped outside the district to catch some fresh air, Cassie broke. Full pacing, chewing her lips, and lightly pinching her bicep with her crossed arms.
“He offered me a job!” She finally shouted looking at her just as shocked sister. The only difference is, Lindsay doesn’t show it as obviously.
“What are you going to do?” Erin asked sitting down on the bench.
Stopping in her tracks Cassie turns to do the same. Now instead of pacing, her leg is restlessly bouncing against the bench seat, slightly annoying Erin.
“I don’t know. I just got my paramedic certification and I’ve been promoted to PIC. I absolutely adore my partner, Sylvie Brett. The environment has relaxed since Matt and Dad have worked out their issues, I just, I’m at a loss right now.” She said resting her elbows on her knees.
“Okay, so what are some pros and cons of becoming a detective right now.” Erin pressed now rubbing circles against the other girls back.
“Well, I’ve already been through the academy and worked the streets, so I’d just come directly upstairs if I transfer. I get to work closer with you, Dad, and Jay. The hours seem pretty shit though,”
“And 24-48 hour shifts are any better?” Erin asked chuckling.
“You’re right.” Cassie said quietly.
“But I won’t get to wear my 5.11’s anymore.” Cassie said sadly looking over at her sister.
“What is that?”
“The EMS pants.”
“And?”
“And they made my butt look good. Sue me.”
Bursting into a fit of laughter, the girls took a few minutes to recollect their thoughts and calm down. All of the previous worries leaving Cassie’s mind, all except for one.
“What if I don’t have what it takes?” Cassie asked sitting up straight and looking dead ahead of her.
“In what way?”
“What if I won’t be able to solve the crimes or actually put people away? What if I’m just the weak link that’s going to make the whole unit drown?” She asks quieter truly unsure.
“If you didn’t have what it takes, do you really think Hank would’ve offered you the job?” Erin asked.
“Out of pity? Probably.” Cassie said knowing it wasn’t true.
“No. If you didn’t have what it took to be a good cop, Hank would not put the whole unit in jeopardy just to make you feel better in some way. Especially not out of pity.” Erin said looking over at her sister who knows better.
“How am I supposed to just quit my other job? Just walk in and say, ‘Hey here’s my two week notice, but scratch that and make it my last shift notice because instead of being a paramedic I’m gonna be a detective in a special unit! Don’t hate me, I know it’s only my third time switching my whole career field but you know, yolo!’”
“Precisely.” Erin joked earning an eye roll from Cassie.
Exactly two days later on the dot, Cassie had a plan.
Walking into 51, Cassie went straight to Chief Boden’s office.
“Sir, can I speak with you?” She asked knocking on his slightly cracked door.
“Yeah, come on in.” He said waving her in and taking his glasses off.
“So what’s this about? You’re not on shift until tomorrow.” He said as he watched her get comfortable in the seat before him.
“I-uh,” Cassie chuckled a little as she tried to fan her face so tears won’t fall. Taking a deep breath before continuing she looked her Chief in the eye and flashed a sympathetic smile. Taking the resignation slip out of her coat pocket, she layed the document on his desk.
“Cassie,” He said almost breathlessly as he stared at the pink slip before him.
“If this is about what happened a few days ago, you can take a few shifts off. You know, decompress. Cope. You don’t have-”
“It’s not about that,” Cassie interrupted.
“It’s not about that situation, or you, or anyone else here at 51. You guys are my family and I will forever cherish the experiences and connections I’ve made here.” Taking a pause Cassie glanced down at her now bleeding cuticles as she was picking at them nervously.
“As you may know, I used to be a cop at the 31st district. I completed the academy, and I was a patrolman for two years. In the middle of that, I realized that, that uniform was not for me. I realized I had another calling, and that was to be a paramedic. Thats why for the last three years I’ve worked my ass off, pardon my language, to become an EMT then a Paramedic, and now a PIC. But after what happened, they let me in the room to help question Lullo. To help get the confession from him, and I did. And it was euphoric. To be the one to help put someone behind bars that deserved it, that was my calling. That was my original intention of becoming a cop, and that’s why, when I got the job offer to become a detective, to continue my law enforcement career, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Becoming a paramedic has been the best thing in my life, and I will forever be indebted to you, and everyone else that helped that dream come true. But I know becoming a detective, and doing real work besides patrolling the streets, that’s my life’s purpose.” Cassie finally said wiping a few stray tears.
Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment, Boden didn’t know what to say.
“As much as I admire your adaptability, and your ability to find purpose in so many things in life, I’ve got to say I’m disappointed. I’m obviously sad to see you go, I truly thought you had a big future here, and being a paramedic in general. Because you’re good at it. You’ve got the guts and the leadership skills to take charge and be the person everyone else looks up too in this community, but I understand you have to follow your gut. I understand you have bigger things to accomplish in life. Cassie, you’re going to do amazing no matter where you work, no matter what you do. I will always be here for you if you need anything, but I want you to consider your decision one last time. Because once I file this paper, you will never be a paramedic again. Not unless you go through the courses and training again. Do you understand that?” He finally asks looking at the girl.
Taking a pause and truly thinking everything over again. Cassie reluctantly nods.
“I understand.” She says now earning a slow nod from the man.
“Then I wish you well. You’re going to do great things.” He finally says standing up at the same time as Cassie and giving her a brief hug.
“Cassie wait,” He calls out making her stop in her tracks, “have you told anyone?”
“No.”
“Do you want to? That way you can break the news?”
Taking a deep breath and thinking it over, Cassie knew she wouldn’t be able to go through with this if she did, so in the most selfish way possible, Cassie shook her head.
“No.” She said now walking out.
As Cassie walked out to her car she let her tears free fall and pulled out her phone.
Cassie:“I’m in.”
Dad: “I know. I’ll see you Monday.”

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

Fat Actor Googy Gress. (1 of 2)
Googy Gress has 80 credits according to IMDb. Some of these are voice credits.
PHOTOS
Googy Gress, circa 2000
His first film was The First Turn On!! in 1983, an independent film in which he was featured and was naked for a time. He was one of the main characters in this film.
- 11. His next film where his name is included in the Beginning Credits is the 1986 TV Movie Babes in Toyland with Drew Barrymore and Keanu Reeves. I am not sure if he was padded in the belly for this or not. Other films in this time period suggest he weighed less. Photo 7 looks like he caught Keanu checking out his butt. A lot of butt pictures after that. I don't think that was padded.
12. - 13. Promised Land in 1987 with Kiefer Sutherland and Meg Ryan was next.
14. - 15. Vibes in 1988 with Cyndi Lauper and Jeff Goldblum. His name was included on the poster for the movie in which I call 2nd tier. 1st tier is the Star or Stars. Their names are either over the title or in a larger font, often both. 2nd tier comes next, sometimes followed by a 3rd tier.
16. The next photo I have is from Apollo 13. He was also in Wayne's World 2 (tiny role) and The American President during this time.
17. In 1996 he appeared, for the first time in episodic TV, in an episode of Frasier (3;14) where former fiancee Diane Chambers visits him and presents a play she has written which is very familiar to Frasier. Googy plays Ned in the play, who is essentially Norm.
17. In 1997 he appeared in ER (4;1) where he projectile vomits on Dr. Noah Wyle.
18. Later in 1997, he appeared on The Practice (2;13), as a complainant asking if he has a case against his female dentist who he says felt him up as he was going under sedation.
19. In 1998 he was in Armageddon as a NASA Tech.
20, In 1999 he was in Blue Streak with Martin Lawrence as a Desk Sergeant who could be bribed with pizza. Googy was also a regular character on TV series G vs E (no photo) in this year. He appeared in all 22 episodes.
21. Later in 1999 he played The Overlooker, an alien, along with other fat actor Jay Leggett in Star Trek: Voyager, both were heavily made up and unrecognizable in rubber masks.
22. In 2000, he played a small part in Me, Myself and Irene with Jim Carrey.
23. - 26. My favorite photos of the group. In 2001, he appeared in an episode of Dharma & Greg (4;13) with fellow chub Jim O'Heir. I hope there was an afterparty when the show rapped. Or maybe it was private.
27. 28. Final photos, 2002, NYPD Blue (10;5) he plays a small role as Requisition Manager(?) for the precinct.

Secret Revealed
Tumblr media
Summary; y/n got shot during his shift and Jay found the guy who did it.
Pairing; jay halstead x reader
Warning; blood mention, angst
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
Dating a detective from the Intelligence wasn’t something you had planned of when you took the job in the 21st district; you needed a change, you needed a new place where to start a new life with new opportunities and the 21st was the best place for that, for you. You dreamed of becoming a detective for years, after all it was your dream when you entered the police academy, and meeting the Intelligence Unit and Sergeant Voight was the best for you because all your dreams seemed to be more realistic. Dating a detective from the unit was risky, it really was, especially since sergeant Voight didn’t like in-house romances.  You heard of Kim, that got rejected for the job the first time because of her new relationship with Adam Ruzek, one of the detectives, and you didn’t want it to happen to you too.
Everything with Jay happened so fast that you didn’t even realize at the beginning; you found yourself in his bed one time, two times and after that almost every night. It was beautiful, it really was, you just couldn’t end it because you really started to feel something for him. You didn’t know if it was the same for him, but you hoped so because you were really falling for him. Everything was done in secret: you never called him by his name at work but jus “Detective Halstead” as well as his colleagues, you never looked at him too much, afraid that someone would have noticed, and you always kept it professional. Sometimes you were both seen at the Molly’s, but every time you were seen together, your partner Roman and his colleagues were there too, so that it didn’t sound suspicious.
It was difficult, it really was, especially when you saw him with his vest on; it looked so damn hot, and it was difficult for you to resist him. The same was for him though, especially since the uniform you wore during all your shifts looked so good on you; sometimes Jay just wanted to take you in an empty room and kissed you for hours.
That day it was just a normal one: you kissed Jay on the lips before going back to your apartments before the start of the shifts, you arrived at the station at different times as usual and you just wished to each other good luck before starting your shifts. Roman was already waiting for you when you arrived there, and you immediately smiled at him.
“Good morning sergeant, hi Sean.” You smiled at your sergeant Trudy Platt, behind the desk, and at your partner, that already had the keys in his hands.
“y/l/m, Roman, be careful.” Trudy recommended as always, not looking at you and trying to sound like she didn’t care at all; you knew Trudy very well after almost three months in the district and you really loved her. She was strict but also very sweet, even if she didn’t want anyone to notice that part of her character.
“Thanks Sergeant.” You smiled and you turned around, ready to leave the district to start your shift as a patrolman. Your eyes met Jay’s, that was entering in that moment. You smiled softly at him, then you looked away and you passed him, saying “Good morning, Detective Halstead.”
“Good morning, Roman, Y/l/n.” He smiled back, then he walked towards the stairs to go upstairs, where the rest of the Intelligence worked.
“You know, you don’t have to pretend when you’re with me.” Said Roman when you both entered the car; you looked up at him with a confused look. “I mean, you and Halstead. I Know that you’re dating. You don’t have to pretend to be professional when you’re with me: I won’t judge you, any of you.”
You didn’t think that someone discovered about your secret relationship, and you were shocked when Roman told you so; you were speechless, you just looked at him.
“I won’t tell anybody, y/n.” He reassured you, smiling softly. “I know that you’re not sleeping your way upstairs and I know that you are both good at keeping it professional, so it doesn’t bother me at all. Besides, I also think that you shouldn’t be ashamed about it because I don’t think Voight will actually care. I mean, he offered the job to Kim when she was still with Adam.”
He was right, but you just couldn’t lose the chance to realize your dream job just because of a relationship that wasn’t even official. You saw each other every day at work and at night after shifts, but you didn’t know if he felt the same for you, you didn't know how serious it was because you never actually talked about it before.
“it’s just… I still don’t know what we are right now. I... I think I’m actually falling for him, but I don’t know if it’s the same for him, you know. I just don’t want to ruin things between us and keeping it a secret is easier.” You told him, sighing and watching outside the window, paying attention to the street and to everyone, in case something wrong was happing.
“I can understand that… keeping it a secret gives you a reason not to tell him the truth and at the same time you avoid the possibility of being rejected, but you have to tell him the truth. He deserved that; don’t you think?”
Before you could even think about it, someone called for you at the radio.
“To all units, we registered a silent alarmed at 2058 W. 22nd Place.”
You looked at Roman and you both nodded, he turned on the sirens and you answered the radio immediately. “2116 squad, we’re just two blocks aways; we’re responding.”
“Copy that 2116 squad.”
When you arrived at the scene, you both noticed three guys wearing black balaclavas exiting the bar with three black duffle bags. You exited the car, and you pointed your gun at them, while Roman did the same.
“CPD, stop!” You screamed.
Everything happened so fast that you couldn’t even hide behind the car: all three of them took three semiautomatic rifles from the duffle bags and pointed them at you.
“Gun!” Roman screamed, hiding behind the car just in time; you tried to do the same, but you were in a worst position, and you had to do all the way around the car to hide. You really tried to do it in time, but you found yourself on the ground before you could do it.
Roman didn’t noticed it at the beginning, he called for help on the radio and he returned fire.
“10-1, 10-1, shots fired at the police! Three offender wearing black balaclava. We need backup!” He said, turning around to make sure that you were okay; when he didn’t see you, he became pale, and you screamed your name. “Y/n! Where are you?”
He looked around and he finally saw you on the ground, on the other side of the car, breathing hardly and with blood all over you. “Y/n!” He grabbed you from your vest and he dragged you behind the car, grabbing the radio.  “Officer down! Officer Down! I need an ambo at my location right now, my partner had been shot!”
You looked at him, pain all over your body. You saw how worried he looked, and you immediately understood that it was bad, really bad.
“Y/n, stay with me please, stay with me!” He took of your vest, applying pressure on your chest where the bullet hit you somehow. “Help is on its way, stay with me please. No, no, no…” He said, seeing that you were losing consciousness; you wanted to say something, but you didn’t have the strength to do that. You passed after some minutes and all you remembered after that was darkness.
At the district, in the meantime, Jay was coming down the stairs when he was stopped by Sergeant Platt, who looked worried as hell; she almost looked like she aged ten years in just few minutes and it wasn’t a good sign, not at all.
“Halstead!” She screamed in panic. “Go upstairs and call down the whole Unit now!”
Jay, confused, began to buzzed himself up with his handprint. “What happened?”
“Y/n’s been shot. Now get Voight!”
Jay thought that the world went down; it was like a nightmare. He rushed upstairs, catching everyone’s attention. “Voight! Y/n’s been shot!”
He was desperate, he couldn’t think straight and all he was doing was hoping that you would have been alright, that it wouldn’t have been too much bad. He let Hailey drive, knowing that he wasn’t in the right mood to do it; Hailey was the only one that knew everything about you and Jay, she knew that Jay was falling in love with you, and she knew that he must had been difficult for him. She drove as fast as she could, arriving at the scene just few minutes after. Jay got out of the car immediately and he ran towards Roman and you.
When he saw you on the ground covered with blood, he almost passed out too. It was too much to handle, it was too much heartbreaking seeing you in that state and, worst of all, the ambulance hadn’t arrived yet.
“What the hell happened?!” He asked Roman, taking off his own jacket and pushing him aside to be able to apply pressure on her wound with his jacket. A towel would have been better but that was the best he had with him.
“There were three guys! We didn’t know they were armed; I hid behind the car, and I returned fire, then I looked for her and I found her on the ground. The bullet went through her vest. The offenders ran away in a black SUV with no plate when I stopped shooting at them… I needed to help her.”
Jay looked at your face and cried; he didn’t notice that at the beginning, but he did when he saw you being brought on the ambulance, with Roman at your side. He wanted to come with you, he really wanted to follow you inside the ambulance, but he couldn’t. He didn’t want to let Voight know that he was to much invested: he wanted to catch the guys that shot you and he would have at any costs.
“You’re crying, Jay. Hide your tears if you want to work on this case.” Hailey told him, whispering to his ear when she saw Hank Voight arriving at the scene too. Jay wiped away his tears, took a deep breath, smiled softly at Hailey as a thank you, and he turned around to face his sergeant.
“What happened?” Hank asked, looking at them and at the stain of blood that there was on the road, where you were till few minutes earlier.
“Three guys, wearing black hoodies and black balaclavas, they robbed the bar and shot at Roman and y/l/n when they arrived. Roman responded to fire but he let them go when he discovered that y/l/n got shot. He covered her and saw the guy running away in a black SUV. No plate.”
“The bullet got trough her vest.” Added Hailey. “She was hit in the chest, and she didn’t look great.”
Voight looked away from the blood stain and looked at his detectives.
“I want everyone in the unit to look after these bastards, am I clear? They hit one of us and they’ll regret it.” He said, firmly. He looked at Jay and Hailey, then at Kim, Adam and Kevin that went to ask some questions to the bar clients in case they heard or saw anything important. “I want the videos of all the security camera in this block. Find the SUV, find them. They must have left a trace behind themselves. And let me know everything about Y/n state, okay? Now let’s go, we have three offenders to catch.”
Jay really wanted to catch the guys that shot you, but he also wanted to be by your side, he wanted to go to the hospital and make sure that you would have been fine, he wanted to be there for you. He just couldn’t forget you on the ground, covered with your own blood, unconscious. It shouldn’t have happened to you, and he should have been by your side, not in the district doing some paperwork.
“We can stop at the hospital for a moment if you want to.” Hailey whispered while Jay and her were walking towards the car. “Just ask me and I will bring you to see her.”
Jay nodded, sitting in the passenger seat and looking out of the window; he really wanted to know how you were, he really wanted to see you, hoping that there will have been good news for him. He just couldn’t lose you, not since he hadn’t told you yet that he loves you, not since he needed you by his side, he needed to see you smile at him, he needed to hug you and kiss you.
Why that happened to you? Why you of all people?
At the hospital the only thing you discovered was that you were still having a surgery and that your conditions were critical; he also found Will his brother, in the hallways and he immediately stopped him, asking him to let him know if anything changed. He wanted to be the first one to now if something happened to you, he wanted to know about the surgery and about your condition as soon as it was possible. Will reassured him, but Jay was still worried as hell.
Back at the district, everyone was working hard on the case, trying to identify the offenders, and trying to understand what really happened. Why they robbed a normal bar? Why they used guns for just some cash?
Something wasn’t right about it and Jay was sure about that.
“Okay, we found some bullets on the road and ballistic identify them. They used Armor-piercing bullets, that’s why the vest didn’t stop them.” Kim said, placing a pic of you on the with board as well as the photo of the bullets found on the scene.
“What? Who were these guys? Armor-piercing bullets are not that easy to find.” Adam noted, looking at the photo from his desk. “Why bring those kind of weapons just for a robbery in a normal bar?”
“It can be just that.” Pointed out Jay, shaking his head. “Are we sure that they only robbed the money from the register?”
Voight nodded slightly and looked at them. “Burgess, Atwater, go get the owner of the bar, they have to know something. Bring them here and put them in the interview room. Ruzek search everything that you can found about the owner, everything. Halstead, Upton, i want you two focused on the black SUV.”
“Copy that Sarge”
They worked on the case for hours and hours and finally they identified the offenders and the reason why they choose to rob that bar, which was just a good cover for diamonds trafficking. When Jay caught the guys that shoot at you, he felt angrier. He really wanted to kick him, to beat him up, to put a gun to his head. He wanted revenge, he wanted revenge because you were still fighting for your life inside the hospital.
“Jay, Jay stop!” Hailey tried to stop him, she really did, but Jay didn’t listen to her. He broke down him and he started to hit him in the face again, and again, and again till someone stopped him.
“Stop it, Jay!” Adam kept him away, while Voight looked at him from distance; he noticed that Jay was different during that case but he didn’t think about that possibility, he didn’t think that one of his detective dated one of his patrolmen without him knowing. He immediately recognized the signs with Ruzek and Burgess at the time but he didn’t with Jay and you.
Before he could even try to talk to him, Jay got a call from his brother and he immediately answered.
“Will, how’s she?” He asked, feeling his heart beating hard and fast. He couldn’t even breathe normally, he just couldn’t think normally. He was so scared and the only thing he wanted was to see your eyes open again, your smiled on your face.
“She woke up, Jay.” Will told him. “And she asked for you.” He added.
Jay’s smile spread all over his face, happy to hear that. He was really worried and he was scared for you, but knowing that you would have been okay made him feel better again, made him feel alive again.
“I’m coming.”
He didn’t ask for permission, nor he asked Hailey to drive, he just told Kevin to bring Hailey back at the district and he ran outside, towards the car; arriving at the hospital was probably the longest drive he ever did, with all the anticipation of being by her side again.
He ran towards your room and, when he saw Roman in front of it, Jay immediately gulped and looked at him. “I’m here for y/l/n.” He said, using your last name to be discreet and to still hide your relationship, knowing how much you wanted to become a detective of the intelligence.
“Don’t worry Halstead… I already know about you. Just get in there, you are the first think she asked about after she woke up.”
Jay felt his heart beating fast, nodding slightly and thanking Roman for what he said and what he did, stating with by your side all the time. “Thank you, Sean.”
The police officer just nodded, then he walked away towards the vendine machine while Jay entered your room. You were there: laying down on the bed, pale but with a small smile on your lips.
“I heard you were worried about me.” You said, smiling softly and taking his hands in yours; Jay smiled in response and he took a seat next to your bed. “Maybe I should got shoot more often.” You joked, caressing his hand softly.
Jay chuckled and shook his head, then he kissed your hand and he smiled wider.
“That’s my detective chuckles!” You said, making him laugh and smile even more.
God, that’s why he loved you.
“Don’t you dare to do such a joke anymore, okay?” He whispered, caressing your hand. “I can’t have an heart attack every time you got shot.”
“And why not? I love to see you worried about me, you know?” You really was somehow relieved knowing that he was worry about you, because you hoped that it was a sign of his feelings for you.
“Oh yeah? Seeing the love of your life covered with her own blood isn’t that good, you know.”
You froze, looking at him with tears in your eyes; he didn’t even think about what he said and, at first, he didn’t realize it till he saw tour face. He tried to apologize, thinking that you didn’t love him back, but he was interrupted by your hand on his mouth.
“Don’t you dare to say anything.” You whispered, afraid that he would have took it back. “I love you too and know please get up and kiss me because I can’t bend over to you.”
Jay didn’t make you repeat again, he smiled, got on his feet and he bent on your bed, placing his lips on yours in a deep and sweet kiss.
You both dis it without thinking, you were just too happy, too involve in the moment that you didn’t notice the rest of the unit, as well as Voight, outside of your room.
But you didn’t care about it, you didn’t care about his “No in-house romance”, you didn’t care about it.
All that matters for you both was to be together, as a couple.
“Secret revealed.” You whispered to his ear, seeing all his colleagues outside the room.
“I don’t care. I won’t stop loving you just for his stupid rule. I don’t care about anything but you, babe.”
“I love you, Jay.” You whispered. “But next time, tell me about your feelings before getting shot, okay?”
He laughed with you, nodding.
“Deal?”
“Deal.”

I'll Take You Home
Fandom: Chicago PD
Pairing: Hank Voight x Reader
Genre: Pre-romance, fluff, slight angst
Warnings: Alcohol mention
Word Count: 2853
A/N: I keep dreaming about Hank lately, always trying to get cosy and huggy with him for some reason. (And also a dream about him confessing his love tearfully to Lizzo. Don't ask, idk.) So here's a fic!
-
These past few weeks had been the weeks of all weeks when it came to a case’s workload, it had been painstaking in every sense - from gathering evidence to running the city’s streets in the hopes of keeping hold of suspects, to eventually making sure the case would even hold up in court at the end of it. It was all-around worthy of a very very long weekend of junk food, tv and sleep. Yet, the catch was that in amongst your work-life, your personal life had somewhat been put into chaotic confusion. That confusion was fuelled by the existence of none other than your Sergeant, Hank Voight.
You had been struggling with your ‘crush’ on him for almost a year now, and it was starting to take its toll. You had tried in every way to shake the unwavering urge to be in his aura, to know him personally, more intimately. So much so that from time to time he would raise his eyebrows with a small chuckle, then ask “You good, kid?” To which you’d have to swallow your words, curse your blushing cheeks and nod with a sheepish smile. “Yes, Sarge. All good.”
To which he’d usually say “Good." and that would be it.
If he ever knew of your feelings he didn’t let on, and he certainly had never called you out on it. As for returning the feelings, well… you thought it would quite frankly be a miracle.
So here you were, fresh off the back of the unending case from hell, and being goaded by the rest of your colleagues and friends to at least join them for “ a few” drinks at the bar. You had already slipped into your most comfortable sweats, a hoodie and some sneakers that had already seen past their glory years, topped with a cosy beanie on your head to keep the chill away. That, apparently, wasn’t the best of excuses as the others had all put their comfort clothes on too, this was simply going to be a chilled out evening with oddly satisfying bar food and several rounds of alcohol to see out the case's end.
You had subtly, or so you thought, questioned Kim and Adam on whether Hank would be in attendance, to which they shared a glance and chuckled softly at you. Kim poked you gently, “I doubt it, he’s not one for socialising too much, you know that. Are you relieved or disappointed, Y/N?” She winks.
You stutter on your words for a moment, cursing internally as you try and recover. “What? I was just wondering, he is part of our team last I checked.”
Adam holds his hands up in surrender before wrapping an arm around your shoulder, kissing the top of your head. “We’re just teasing, Y/N. It’s all good, he said he’d probably just head home, so you can relax.”
You nod meekly, exhaling. You really couldn’t tell if you were relieved or disappointed, but you figured it was an obvious mixture of both.
Choosing to avoid his name at all costs in the evening, you let your friends carry the topics of conversation, from academy mishaps to relatives who seemed just as unruly and unusual as your own. You laughed, you ate, and you most definitely drank. To the point where Jay, Kim and Hailey began to periodically check on you. You could handle your alcohol physically, but mentally it was an unfortunate feature that you got to a point where emotions would spill out, for better or for worse. So one might imagine the shock and panic you felt when Hank Voight did indeed make an appearance 2 hours into the gathering’s festivities.
“Hey hey, boss! Good to see you.” Adam cheered.
“Nice of you to join us, Sarge.” Kevin smiled, already standing to get Hank something.
You sat between Jay and Kim who also greeted your boss, whilst you stayed still and silent, a deer in the headlights as he briefly made eye contact with you and nodded in your direction with a half-smile. In your surprised state, you eventually remembered to nod and greet him in return.
“Evening, ‘Sarge.”
“Evening, Y/L/N. Are you enjoying your well-earned break?” You licked your lips, you weren’t sure if he was genuinely enquiring or making a comment on your appearance. You hoped with all you had that it wasn’t obvious that you were drunk as a skunk, but the collection of cocktail glasses, your red-rimmed eyes and your slight slant into Kim’s body seemed to be the giveaway. Yet, in his eyes, sincerity did in fact remain. So you answered,
“I sure am, Han- Sergeant… Voight.”
If you could have asked Jay to stand across the other side of the bar and snipe you out, you would have. Wincing at the total mash-up of his name and title. He thanks Kevin for the drink that appears in his hand, and then hides his smile as he takes a sip.
Unbeknownst to you, Hank was very much aware of your crush on him. Not only did he have eyes, but Trudy Platt did too, and had told him to be careful. To not lead you on and do anything that would end up hurting you. So he hadn’t, he had kept himself away and did his best to not pick up on the sense of your wanting of him.
In the shuffle around the table, you’re not really sure how you went from being next to Jay and Kim to being next to Hank and Kim, you think you heard something about Jay heading to the bathroom and then grabbing the next round for the others - you made a mental note to kick Jay in the shins later. You hastily took in some of the water you had poured from the pitcher on the table, averting your gaze from Hank’s direction. Eventually, you had become so hot and self-aware, that you had to take off your hoodie, leaving you in an Eagles t-shirt that was a few sizes up from your actual size. Hank glanced your way, seeing how flustered you were he dared not engage you just now, leaving you to nurse your now alcohol-free drink and get your mind back under control.
Time passes and you feel calmer than you did, occasionally glaring at an apologetic Jay who was also in the loop on your weird, complicated, feelings towards your boss. Kim occasionally pats your leg, talking to you about more horror films she thought you’d enjoy the next time you came over for movie night. That was your element, and you were soon just lost in the animated excitement of talking to your friend. Which, regrettably, led you to supply more money for more rounds, everyone still very much in the joviality of togetherness.
Hank would occasionally just take in the sight of his team carefree and enjoying each other’s company, especially taken by your passionate conversations with Kim, clearly not aware that you had little by little let yourself relax, and subsequently, your thigh was pressed against Hank’s in the cosiness of the curved booth. Every so often you would lean into his side as you had with Kim, and even more shockingly wrap your arms around him, never quite consciously realising yourself, nor realising the widening of everybody’s eyes each time you did it. Hank simply took it in his stride, gently uprighting you and prying you off after a few moments. Not because he didn’t want to hold you, but because he didn’t want you to feel embarrassed in the morning.
Another hour passes and the buzz of alcohol starts to snake its way back through your bloodstream, eyes heavy with drunkenness and tiredness, now everything was somehow an amusing maze of topics that crisscrossed, much of the table reflecting the same. It was Jay and Kevin who held their drink the best, suggesting that it was time to call it a night, to which the much more sober Hank agreed.
Jay and Hailey would be taxiing together, whereas Kim, Ruze and Kevin were doing the same. You had, mistakenly, forgotten to arrange yourself a ride home, not even really intending to be out at all. In the dying moments of the evening, you felt the familiar feelings of heaviness creep up on you, you always felt alone at the end of the night, and the lack of a shared ride only compounded that feeling. It would otherwise not bother you had you been sober, but alas you were most definitely not.  Jay is just about to suggest you ride with him and Hailey when Hank gently places a hand on your arm to steady your swaying frame, he looks at you with a flicker of concern, the sadness in your eyes makes his chest ache,
“I can take, Y/N home, I’m still under the limit and she’s closer to my neighbourhood. If that’s alright with you, Y/N?”
You don’t immediately process the fact that a) Hank is holding your arm, and b) He’s offering a ride, until your brain completes its surprised buffering and you let a small, “Oh.” You swallow, blinking. Looking from Hank’s hand and your arm to the others, each of them with an amused expression, subtly nodding in encouragement to let Hank look after you.
“Sure, Sarge. That would be, uh, that would be really helpful. Thanks.”
“Not a problem, Y/N. Let’s get your sweatshirt back on, it’s cold out.”
Everyone resumes their gathering of belongings, smaller quieter conversations now that the bar is clearing out for the night. Everyone starts to migrate to the front doors to the sidewalk, but you’re drunkenly fighting the octopus that is the sleeves of your hoodie.
“Here, I got it.” A firm and soothing voice comes through the barrier of fabric that’s around your head, you feel the light pressure of hands as he helps your head surface through the hole for your head, and then he helps you tuck your arms into the sleeves, eventually pulling it down so that it fits comfortably around you.
With a fizzing warmth in your stomach, his hand remains on your arm, keeping you focused and upright, for which you’re grateful, and then it’s the classic phrase that you’ve grown attached to, “You good, kid?”
Hank eyes you curiously, lips turned into a smile, but his gaze holds something else too, something tender, something soft.
You lick your lips, nodding meekly as you smile back, eventually having the confidence to take steps out from behind the booth and towards the exit with your chaperone. Your legs wobble here and there, but you do a good job of making it out. You find yourself in a hubbub of goodbye hugs and “See you, Monday!” before you just as quickly find yourself alone on the sidewalk in the frost of the Chicago night, with Hank.
“My SUV is just down this way, you alright to keep walking?” He queries, eyes sincere.
Your heart is hammering, and you suddenly feel very self-conscious, as though you might be letting him down for not being sober enough. “I’m alright, thank you again for the ride.”
But there’s no hint of annoyance, disappointment or anger in his eyes, only genuine concern about your comfort, “Don’t even mention it. Come on.”
-
You spend most of the ride trying to keep your words in your head, afraid of what nonsense rambling might spill from your lips if you gave them half a chance. Yet, your mouth still finds a way to let a few things escape,
“It smells good in here. Like leather and aftershave.”
“Good to know it doesn’t smell like garbage.” Hank makes a grunt of amusement, smoothly taking each turn to get to your part of the neighbourhood.
“You drive good too, sensible, it’s so nice when we’re not in chaos mode.” You sigh wistfully, leaning your head against the cool glass of the passenger side window, absentmindedly fiddling with the hem of your hoodie.
Hank has to press his lips together to keep the laughter in, glancing at your faraway expression, looking the most relaxed you had all night.
You sigh again, humming this time, tracing your fingers across the bumpy texture of panelling on the passenger door, “Oh, Hank. You’re my favourite.”
This time Hank feels his stomach bloom into a flurry of butterflies, he knows you’re not at all in awareness of what you’re saying, but it affects him all the same. He had been trying so hard to quell the feelings he might have for you in return, but with each passing day, it seemed to get all the more difficult. He doesn’t respond to your words, however, with a cursory glance he sees that you’ve dozed off against the door, light huffs of breath filling the silence of the car.
-
You were supposed to be dropped off at home, but it was with great surprise that you discovered your keys had been left in your locker at the District and were not actually in your bag.
Those melancholy emotions started to bubble up inside you once again, feeling like a massive inconvenience for bringing Hank to a building you couldn’t even get into.
“I’m so sorry, Hank. I’ll just get a cab back to the district, sleep it off there and drive home tomorrow. Don’t worry, I’m so sorry, I’ll get out now…”
“Y/N, it’s alright, why don’t you-”
“God, I’m such an idiot, always an idiot in front of you, I’m really sorry, really-”
Hank doesn’t yell, but he does take a firmer tone with you to get your attention.
“Y/N, hey. Listen. It’s absolutely fine. You can sleep in the guest room at my house, then we’ll take you to the District tomorrow to pick up your keys. Alright?”
He has his hands on your shoulders, imploring you to keep focus, eyes shine in your tears but you can see he is serious about the offer and yet again there’s no trace of irritation.
“Okay, okay. Yeah, that would be great. Th-thanks.”
“Good. All right, back in we get, my place is only 5 minutes from here anyway.”
-
It’s almost like you blink and the five minutes were gone, now shakily gripping the handrail on the stairs that lead to Hank’s front door. He fishes out his own keys from his jacket and pushes the door open, a hand on the small of your back as he guides you through. Gently steering you to sit on a chair in the hallway as he crouches to undo the laces on your sneakers.
You sit quietly, letting him do the work as you take in the emptiness of his home. It wasn’t empty of material goods, but it felt lonely. Your stomach clenched in sadness for him, looking back down as he carefully pulled your feet loose. You never wanted him to feel that kind of sadness, and you sneakily swipe a tear away whilst his attention is elsewhere. Once he’s done he stands back up, smiling warmly, as he pulls you to your feet once more.
“Let’s get you up to bed, then I’ll bring you some water and pills.”
You look at him with such gratitude, “Thank you. Again. Really I mean it.”
“I know you do, sunshine. It’s no sweat.”
He doesn’t bat an eyelid as he throws out the term of endearment, meanwhile your mind catapults with shock, he had never ever called you something like that. And to hear it was, quite frankly, an absolute delight.
Your chest radiates warmth, and in the next moment, you’re no longer in your hoodie again, your body melting into the plushness of a mattress and plump pillows.. Your hat has been put with it on the chair next to ‘your’ bed for the night, socks are pulled off with the same gentle nature as your shoes, and you look up through drowsy eyes to see Hank smiling again.
“I’ll be right back. Just get comfy, and if you need anything you let me know, alright?”
You hum, allowing yourself to wriggle under the covers and feel the softness of the linen, it was utter bliss at the end of a long day.
You’re on the verge of sleep when Hank reappears with water and tablets as promised, setting them on the nightstand, he then sets down an extra item of a bowl. Presumably, for the scenario of not making it to the bathroom in the middle of the night. He observes you for a moment.
“Okay, that’s us for the night. I’m going to be next door, if you need anything at all, you just wake me up, okay? Sleep well, Y/N.”
“You sleep well too, Sarge. Sleep…sleep happy… dreams…” You mumble, already in your preferred sleeping position, melting into rest.
Just as your eyes fall shut, moving into the further depths of sleep, you’re faintly aware of soft lips on your forehead, and a low rumbled whisper to the room,
“You’re my favourite too, Y/N.”

Pieces (18): Face to the Name
Tumblr media
Chapter 18: Face to the Name
Chapter Summary: Jay and Intelligence are kept busy on a case with at least three bodies, until Jay realizes the real missing piece that’s kept them from solving it.
Word Count: 2,334
Warnings: gunshot wounds, hostage situations, PD canon-typical mentions of death and crime scenes
A/N: I changed this like three times and I'm still feeling pretty meh about it but anyway, I figured this is probably the best version of whatever is in my head so here it is!
SERIES MASTERLIST || JAY HALSTEAD MASTERLIST

Tumblr media
Jay ducked under the police tape, heading towards where Hailey and Kim were standing, his eyes falling on the body lying on the hardwood floors.
“It’s him.” Kim said, her voice coming out through her gritted teeth. “This is the third one.”
There’d been very little forensic evidence on the scene, and there’d been no overlap so far on the previous two victims they’d found, other than the exact MO. They didn’t go to the same grocery store, or the same gyms and Intelligence hadn’t been able to find anything overlapping on the days leading up to their murder either.
Jay was getting pissed off, it felt like they were always a step behind, which made the murders even more confusing because it also felt like this perp was out of control. These didn’t feel planned, the scenes were always a little haphazard, there wasn’t a lot of forensic countermeasures, but it wasn’t like it was needed since it was practically an execution.
The victims had all been shot in their homes. The first victim’s looked more out of control, she’d been shot probably the moment she opened the door. But by the time it came to the second victim, it looked more planned, like the victim had invited the perp in.
“Jay.” He looked up at his sergeant's voice. “Go home. We’ll pick this up in the morning.”
Jay didn’t respond and Voight gave him a look. “Fresh mind, fresh eyes tomorrow.”
Jay knew Voight was right. It felt like there was just one missing piece, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that once he got it that they’d be able to solve this damn case.
“Go.” Voight said and Jay closed the file, getting up to leave.
Jay had thought about just going back to his apartment to crash. After all, he’d probably have to leave early in the morning, but he did want to check in on the both of you so he made the turn towards your apartment anyway.
It wasn’t like you and Jay had made any sort of agreement or talked about living together, but Jay definitely spent more time at your place with you and Chloe, than he did at his own apartment.
Jay opened the door quietly, the light from the living room filtering out towards the darker hallway. Jay wasn’t surprised since sometimes you left the hall light on, for him when he came over late, or even for Chloe in case she crawled out of bed in the middle of the night.
Jay quietly put down his things at the entrance, frowning when he noticed the television was on. The volume was so soft, barely audible, he could just as easily have missed it. He stepped further into the apartment, his eyes now falling on you, where you’d fallen asleep on the couch. You were curled up, one arm propped up under your head, with your eyes closed as you breathed evenly.
Jay smiled to himself, squatting next to you, reaching out a hand to stroke your cheek softly.
Your eyes peeked open as you stirred. “Jay.” You sat up.
“Why didn’t you go to bed?”
You smiled. “Must have dozed off. Wasn’t sure if you were coming over tonight. Have you eaten?”
Jay didn’t answer, just watching you with a small smile on his face.
“We still have some pasta. Chloe wanted to keep some for you.” You said, climbing up from the couch.
Jay shook his head. “It’s okay, I was gonna go back to my place to crash but I wanted to check in on the both of you.” He shrugged. “I was going to just crash on the couch, honestly.”
Your eyes lingered on him and you reached out for his hand, squeezing. “You still have to eat. I’ll be quick.”
Jay knew there wasn’t a point in arguing so he just nodded quietly, watching you enter the kitchen before he sank onto the couch.
You were quick, heating up the pasta in a bowl and handing it over to him, climbing back onto the couch next to him. You didn’t say anything while he ate, just rested a hand on him to let him know you were there. Jay reached over to put the bowl down on the small coffee table in front of him before he turned to look at you.
“Thanks, Y/N. I…”
“Tough case?” You asked, unable to ignore the look in his green eyes when he looked back at you.
Jay just gave you a small smile. “Voight made me go home.”
You smiled at the word ‘home’, considering he’d come here instead.
You leaned up and pressed a kiss on his cheek. “Go freshen up and crash in bed. I’ll clean up.”
“I have to get up early anyway, I’ll just crash out here.”
You gave him a look. “You’re here, don’t you dare make me sleep alone.”
You knew by the look in Jay’s eye that he’d stop arguing and so you smiled. “Go.”
Jay pressed a kiss to your temple. “Thank you.”
Tumblr media
Jay groaned as his phone rang and he reached over for it.
“We got a fourth body.” Hailey’s voice came from the other end of the line.
“Damn it. I’ll be right there.” Jay answered, hanging up.
You stirred from next to him, opening your eyes and turning your face up to look at him.
“Sorry, go back to sleep.” Jay whispered. “I gotta go, okay? Sorry.”
You just smiled, motioning to him to come nearer and Jay leaned in to give you a quick kiss. “Be careful.” You whispered, as his lips barely lifted from yours.
“You know it.” He answered, smiling at you before he headed out, not forgetting to look in on Chloe before he left for the district.
Tumblr media
“Jay, I think I got it.”
Jay looked up at his partner, pushing back from his desk and heading around to Hailey’s.
Hailey pointed, “They were all at Med on the same day.”
Jay frowned. “What?”
“I dug deeper. We missed it because the first victim didn’t register. I called Med, they said she came in, Dr Rhodes gave her medical attention when she passed out in front of Med but declined further medical attention and left. She was never keyed into the system.”
Jay paused. “Connor Rhodes?”
Hailey nodded. “Yeah, why?”
“Damn it.” Jay muttered, diving for his phone and making a call. “Y/N, can you check something for me? I don’t need any personal details.”
Jay rattled off the names of the victims to you over the phone, and there was only one conclusion. They’d all gone into Med, and they’d all been seen by Dr Connor Rhodes.
Jay went straight to Voight’s office. “Sarge, we found the link. Dr Connor Rhodes.”
Voight glanced up at Jay.
“Connor saw all of them on the same day, and the first victim was someone he attended to right outside Med, no registration. They only remembered because she’d passed out and there was a big commotion but when she came to, she declined to be seen and left. This could be linked.”
Voight nodded slowly, thinking. He’d already been aware of the notes that Connor had received, and they’d been trying to investigate it simultaneously, but with nothing else to go on, it was proving difficult. If this was linked to their murders though, that was a different thing altogether.
“You and Hailey, go down to Med, talk to him.” Voight said. “I’ll see if we can get a warrant.”
Jay nodded, grabbing his coat, signaling to Hailey, as they headed straight for Med.
Tumblr media
Jay and Hailey had gone through a whole list of patients that day, looking for anyone with signs of aggression, but even after talking with everyone else, they had a steaming pile of nothing. There’d been no one in particular that stood out as aggressive, or even threatening.
“Alright, wait.” Hailey said, speaking up from where she’d been standing in the corner, thinking. “Let’s go back.”
Jay glanced at Hailey, as if to remind her that if this guy was keeping up with his pattern, someone else was going to die again.
Hailey nodded at Jay before she looked at Connor. “Not someone aggressive. Let’s just look at any that you lost that day. The patients that didn’t make it. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t the attending doctor, even if you spent two minutes at their bedside. Everyone who you lost that day.”
Connor pulled out patient files from the list he had, and now there were only four files left, for each person he lost on that day a few months ago. Connor went through each case in his head, each patient that he’d lost, before he pulled out a file and handed it to Jay.
“I think I got it. Just one.”
Jay opened the file as Connor spoke. “Laura Wood came in presenting with light symptoms. She suddenly took an unexpected turn for the worse. Everyone else was mostly touch-and-go. Laura’s husband didn’t show any signs of aggression but like Hailey said…”
There was a pause, broken only by the silence of Hailey’s phone ringing.
“Hails, I ran the names you gave me. Laura Wood’s husband, Tyler Wood, has a cousin working in Med. Admissions.” Kevin’s voice crackled over her phone and Hailey glanced up at Jay, nodding.
Jay nodded towards Connor, “We’ll take it from here. We’ll come get you if we need anything else.”
They had a name.
Jay and Hailey had headed straight for Sharon Goodwin, who’d told them in no uncertain terms that Med was fully prepared to cooperate, and that she was already aware of the situation. With that, Jay and Hailey set to work. If Laura’s husband, Tyler, was actually the person they were looking for, there was either someone else on his list, or he was coming for Connor.
And they needed to figure it out so they would know what to do.
Jay was staring at the screen, watching the camera showing the front of the treatment room Laura Wood had been in, while Hailey was next to him, busy tracking Connor’s movements through the ED at the same time. Jay watched Tyler Wood and based on the comparisons with what Hailey was looking at, it did look like Tyler Wood’s eyes followed Connor’s movements through the ED any time that he wasn’t at his wife’s bedside.
But the most decisive moment was when Connor moved back into the view of the camera in front of the treatment room and you entered as well. Jay watched as you spoke to Connor, Tyler’s eyes flicking up to glance at you. Jay couldn’t wait, he forwarded the tape, ignoring the looks from Hailey.
Jay glanced at the time stamp on the image, glancing back at Connor’s notes to make sure he’d found what he was looking for. His green eyes followed the moving images on the screen, Connor coming out from the treatment room to talk to Tyler, followed by your exit of the treatment room, but Tyler’s eyes were no longer on Connor, even though it was clear Connor was still speaking.
Jay finally looked back at Hailey.
“It’s down to the both of them, we gotta go.”
Jay practically rammed his way back into the ED.
“Maggie, where’s Y/N? And Connor?” Jay asked, just as he reached the nurses’ station, his head still swiveling around the ED.
Maggie glanced up. “Connor went to get coffee with your brother. And you just missed Y/N, she went to go get them.”
“Hailey, the coffee place in the hospital. I’m going down to check on them, get the rest on Wood’s tail.” Jay said, barely remembering to thank Maggie before he dashed off.

You were a little distracted, not even walking out of the elevator immediately when the metal doors opened, only looking up when you heard the doors closing again. Your hand shot out towards the open button before you walked out, your eyes spotting Will and Connor already waiting for the coffees at the other end of the counter.
Jay had been here for a good part of the day, which wasn’t a good sign, because it meant he and Hailey weren’t able to narrow down to a suspect yet. And it was starting to worry you, because you knew that look in Jay’s eyes - that worried look that he couldn’t shake, which meant it was serious, which probably meant the threat to Connor was real.
Jay reached the lobby almost the same time as you, as he dashed down the stairs. If Wood kept up his pattern, he’d be here today, because there was no other possible person he could be after. It was either you or Connor. And no way was Jay going to let that happen.
He exhaled as he saw you cross the lobby, heading for Will and Connor and he stepped towards you, pausing when his eyes flicked behind you.
Striding through the lobby behind you was Tyler Wood, the gun he was holding casually by his side glinting from the sunlight that was streaming through the huge glass windows that adorned the lobby of Chicago Med.
“Y/N!” Jay yelled, but he knew he was too late, even as he pulled his gun out and heard Hailey come running from behind him.
You looked up in alarm, when you heard Jay’s voice. That wasn’t the usual tone of Jay’s voice, which only meant…
The thought lay unfinished in your head as you felt an arm loop around your front and yank you backwards roughly. Like instinct, you tried to squirm out of his grasp until you felt it, cold and hard against your side - the tip of a gun.
Your eyes flicked up towards Jay, and you could see Will and Connor frozen just a distance behind.
The voice that reached your ears was cold and practically lifeless.
“I want to see Connor Rhodes.”

The innocent detective - Epilogue
Tumblr media
Warnings: None.
Summary: Everything is back to normal.
A/N: So this is the final part!! I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I have had fun to write this from the plot and all the mysteries. This has been my first series but I've very much enjoyed it.
So sorry for the two week wait but life has been kicking my arse and my mental health has been a roller coaster but my new meds have been doing something. Also, this is so short but, oh well.
Anyways, enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Previous Chapter / Series Masterlist
*****
Hand in hand, you and Jay walked up the stairs into the precinct where you hadn't been in what felt like years. Long grueling years even though you'd been gone for eight months.
After your release, you told Jay everything that happened between the confined walls of the prison, leaving out a few details because as soon as he knew, his knuckles were going to hit peoples faces.
Instead of going home even though you were desperately itching to, you insisted on going to Med or just a hospital where you could get better treatment than the lousy plasters and cheap bandages you were offered.
Walking into the ED felt weird but the minute you saw your favourite redhead and his hilarious reaction to seeing you, all you pain was gone. With the correct treatment and an actual qualified doctor, you were forced on medical leave for a month.
And here you were a month later, walking with a bounce in you step and the most perfect ring comfortably sitting on your finger on your left hand.
You could've cried at the sight of your favourite desk sergeant. She visited you several times once you got home but seeing her in uniform while at work just hit different.
"Sup Sarge." You nonchalantly nodded at the woman, trying to keep a completely straight face but when she whipped around, her back no longer facing you, you failed as your smile made itself known.
"Oh Y/N." She looked at you in relief, looking your body up and down, trying to see if you were in any pain before enveloping into her mothering embrace. If anyone saw this, they were lying.
Loving the hug but feeling all the peering eyes, you reluctantly pulled away and smiled at the older woman who was kinda like a surrogate mother for everyone in intelligence.
"Now get your ass upstairs and do some work detective." She frowned, playfully smacking your shoulder as Jay pulled you away, smiling at the encounter you shared.
Being the gentleman he was, Jay let you do the honours, letting you scan your hand and punch in the code which you did so with a smug smile. It was the little things that made it all more real.
Maybe you should've been patient and waited for your fiance but your were already bouncing in excitement, not being able to sit still for a millisecond if your life depended on it. You were bursting to the seems, more than eager to get straight back into work.
It could've been because of how late it was or it could've been how fast your footsteps were but whatever it was that alerted them, by the time you turned the corner, the bullpen fully coming into your view, everyone was already looking in your direction.
Everyone was out their seats, smiles spreading across their faces as they made their way towards you. All of them were welcoming you back, each taking turns to hug you.
They all took turns to come visit you while you were on medical leave. They cooked food, kept you company when Jay was too busy with work and overall, they were just too nice for their own good.
Standing in a half formed circle, your smile permanently stuck on your face, you jokingly shoved Adam away when he obnoxiously gasped at the glimmering rock on your finger, accusing Jay of a crime since he kept it a secret from them.
Back in the comfort of your fiance's arms, back doing the job that was rightfully yours and back with the people you love, you knew that everything would be more than okay because even if things didn't exactly go to plan, it was these people that would stick by you always.
To be free of suck malicious convictions felt exhilarating. Knowing that a criminal was behind bars where they belonged despite her blood relation to you, you were content to know she wasn't going to cause anymore harm.
Either way, you were always innocent and no serial killer could change that.

Absolution and Mercy (7x9-7x10) || Jay Halstead x Healstead Sister
Tumblr media
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly delated my blog 🫠
This is the plot from season 7, episodes 9 and 10 but with Jay's younger sister involved in the story.
Did I cry a bit writing this? Yes I did.
Becca was usually the first one to be picked up after her afternoon classes were over, but this day she was left alone in the sidewalk. It was getting dark, she was cold and scared. At the distance she detected how a car was approaching her at full speed, but it wasn't Jay. It was Will, and she only realized that when he parked in front of her.
-"Sorry I'm so late. In my defense, Jay called me all of the sudden. I drived as fast as I could, then I got lost. Are you going to get in or what? It's freezing outside".
-"Where's Jay?" The girl asked when she was inside of the car.
-"He didn't say. He was in a hurry when he called me, he might be working in a case, something must have poped out unexpectedly. You know how it is".
-"Are you taking me home?"
-"No, I can't leave you there alone. We're going to my place. Jay will pick you up later, or I will take you back with him. He will give me a call, don't worry".
But that call never happened. During the course of the night, Will called his brother several times, but he never answered.
-"Do you think he is in danger?" Becca was starting to get worried.
-"No". Will lied. -"Maybe he's still working and he's not carrying his personal phone".
That argument didn't convince her at all.
-"It's late and you have school tomorrow, so this is what we're gonna do. Go take a shower, I'll find some clothes you can use to sleep on. I will take the sofa, so you can sleep comfy in my bed".
Not wanting to, Becca obeyed her brother. She couldn't hide her concern for Jay and Will was trying to ignore it, pretending nothing was going on. He was also quiet preoccupied but didn't want to show it. When his sister was out of the room, he gave it another try.
-"Hey, man. It's me again. Call me back as soon as you hear this...please. Bec's alright, don't worry. We're just...We want to make sure you're safe".
The sun began to set on the horizon without news of the missing Halstead brother. Will had barely slept during the night, he distributed his time between trying to reach Jay and checking on Becca, who also had a rough night. He was half asleep when a ray of light coming through the window woke him up.
-"Shit". He muttered looking at his cellphone. There were no signs of Jay.
He went to his room and found his sister sleeping under the blankets. He had to make a plan and act normal, she obviously knew something was wrong.
-"Bec". He softly moved her shoulder. -"Bec, wake up".
-"Is Jay back?" She asked half asleep.
-"No. I'm taking you home so you can get ready for school. Come on".
-"Do you think he is going to be there?"
-"We'll find out".
Will opened the door of Jay's appartment with his copy of the keys. He entered first, making sure everything was in order. Becca followed him when he gave her a sign to get in.
-"This is not good". She said. -"Where is he?"
-"I don't know. I'll pass by the 21st after I drop you off at school. Let's hope they have an answer to this mystery".
-"No. We'll pass by the 21st before you drop me off at school".
Trudy Platt was at her desk talking on the phone with the State's Attorney. She got confused when she saw both Halstead siblings entering the room, their presence wasn't a good singn, she felt it in her guts.
Sergeant Platt went up to the bullpen with Will and Becca behind her. All of the detectives were gathered there, except for Jay. The little girl looked all over the place and made a disappointed face when didn't spot her brother.
-"Hey, is Halstead on a UC run?" Trudy asked Voight.
-"Not that I know about".
-"State's Attorney is all over me. He's supposed to be in court right now. His brother and little sister are also looking for him". She pointed at them with her head.
-"He called me yesterday and asked me to take care of Becca. He was supposed to pick her up later, but never showed up. We went to his place this morning and wasn't there". Will intervened.
-"Hailey, you know anything?"
-"No, I called him a few times, but---".
-"I did too". Platt said.
-"No answer". Will concluded showing his phone. -"This is so out of character for him. He's overprotective, he would never forget about Becca like this. He didn't even called to make sure she was already with me, didn't ask if she was fine as he always does".
-"I ran the GPS on his truck...". Platt stoped and moved her eyes from Will and Becca before continuing.
-"Nothing I say will make her go downstairs". Will stated as giving her permission to keep on talking.
-"It's parked on a street in Englewood".
-"How long has it been there?"
-"All night. I ran the in-service calls to that block, there were two calls of suspicious persons at a house on that street".
Becca took a few steps to the front to reach her brother's arm.
-"Thanks, Trudy".
-"Check it out". Hank ordered to his detectives. -"We'll keep you updated". He said to Will.
-"Please find him". Becca begged the sergeant.
-"We won't stop until we find him". He reassured her with a smile and petting her head.
-"Let's move. I'll take you to school". The doctor said to his sister. -"You already missed a couple of classes".
-"Are you joking? I'm staying" She said staring directly at his eyes.
-"You'll be better at school than here or at The Med".
-"I myself will inform you when we find him, it's a promise". Trudy ended the conversation.
School was being worse than usual for Becca, she couldn't stop thinking about her brother. She was so deep in her toughts that she didn't even hear the daily mockery of her classmates. The clock was ticking slowly and her eyes began to fill with tears.
-"I'm here to take Becca Halstead". The school's principal interrupted the class. -"Take your backpack, sweetie. They're here to pick you up".
The tone on the woman's voice reminded her of that time Burgess and Roman took her to the bullpen because Jay was being threatened. She took her stuff and walked throught the hallway to find Trudy Platt at the office.
-"Here she is, Sergeant. You can take her now".
-"I promised you that I would inform you as soon as they found it. The team just found him".
-"Is he-".
-"I don't know anything else". Platt interrupted. -"I just know he was found". She lied, she wasn't the indicated to talk with her about his condition. -"Come on, I'll take you to The Med. Will is waiting there".
The Med was full of cops and detectives as usually happened when one of their own was wounded. For Will it was surreal that this time the victim was his brother, he still couldn't assimilate the fact. His mind was all disturbed constantly changing from the doctor to the brother role and viceversa. Apart from Jay's state of health, what worried him the most was Becca. Despite having notified a lot of bad news during his career, he had no clue how to discuss the situation with his little sister. He didn't want to, but he didn't want anyone else to be the one telling her the news. He was also uncommonly scared to enter the waiting room where the policemen were waiting for updates.
Hailey Upton was sitting leaning over with her elbows on her knees, the fear was evident on her face. Looking at her teary eyes it was obvios how much she had been crying. It wasn't strange at all, she and Halstead had been partners for a couple of years now and their relationship had grown to a good friendship, a very good friendship. Detective Rojas sat next to her and extended her a coffee, leaning a hand on her back as a reassuring gesture.
Kevin and Adam were also there, both standing up, for anxiety did not allow them to stay still. The rest of the place was packed with uniformed. Hank Voight was on his feet, concern was evident through his eyes. A lot of officers and commanders approached him offering their support.
With a heavy sigh and holding back a lot of emotions, Will encouraged himself to go inside with them. Everybody stood up at his presence. Detective Upton quickly positioned herself in front of him, followed by the rest of the team.
-"Hey, Everybody". Somehow he was managing to stay as the doctor, not the brother. -"I just talked to Dr. Marcel, he said the bullet grazed an artery. They are still trying to repair it".
-"Will?" Hank Voight intervened. -"Is he gonna be ok?"
-"He's lost a lot of blood". Words stuck in his throat and dried stoped talking. Ruzek gave him a pat on the shoulder to show emotional support, there wasn't relly anything else to do.
-"Will..." Maggie interrupted from the outside of the waiting room. Everyone turned their attention to the charge nurse and there was no need for her to explain anything. Becca was right behind her, her big hazel eyes wide open looking at all of the cops and some other familiar faces, trying to comprehend what was going on.
-"Oh, Bec...". Will approached to her sweating cold, with his heart raced in fear.
-"Wh--What's going on?" She asked, not being able to take her eyes off the cops. -"Sergeant Platt told me they found Jay, but nothing else. What happened?". Her voice was charged with despair.
The detectives' eyes were all on Becca, wide open as if waiting for a reaction from the girl.
-"Yeah. Ok. Hmm--there's no easy way to say this". His voice was very low and raspy. -"Jay was kidnapped, but his team found him and...".
-"Where is he? Can I see him?" The little girl interrupted calmly.
-"Jay was shot, Becca. He's going into surgery right now". As a doctor, he knew there wasn't other way of saying it.
-"Oh". The girl said as if it was a casual situation. -"But, I mean...he's going to be fine, right?".
-"He's...lost a lot o blood".
-"But it's Jay". Becca interrupted with a smiled, more as a symtom of a nervour breakdown, eyes starting to get teary. Maybe she didn't realize it, but she was avoiding the rest of the information. -"He has been shot before, he's like indestructible".
At that moment, Becca sensed how Maggie held her shoulders, and the weight of the world fell on the little girl. The atmosphere felt the same as when Jay told her that their mother had died, as same as when Will explained to her that they would have to disconnect their father. All of those memories and feelings were taking control over her, but this time Jay wasn't there to help her go through them.
-"Bec..."
-"No..."
-"Becca, he was shot in the chest, no bulletproof vest. He has lost a lot of blood...".
-"Will--". Maggie tried to stop the doctor.
-"Shut up!"
-"...but he's in surgery right now with Dr. Marcel, one of the very best in Chicago and he's..."
-"Just stop!". Becca cried.
-"Dr. Halstead!" Maggie insisted worried for how Becca was taking the news. There has to be another way of notifyig.
-"...doing his best to save our brother's life. He is in the best hands". He tried to hold her, but she refused him.
-"Is he goig to die?" Becca asked in a very low voice and bursted into an uncontrollable crying.
Will held his sister as tight as he could, so tight she was barely breathing under his arms. He tried to keep his composure, but broke down when he heard his little sister crying loud. He kissed her head, there was nothing to say, nothing to do, just be there for each other.
The intelligence team witnessed the scene and was moved by it, but most of all it made their anger grow even more. Tears rolled down Hailey's cheeks, Adam just stared at the floor with his arms crossed. Hank Voight patted Becca on the back as he passed through te sibblings to run into Burgess, who had just arrived.
-"I got an update on Angela Nelson".
-"Okay".
-"Doctors removed the bullet. She's gonna be fine".
-"Where is she?" And with that only question, they both left the place in a hurry.
With all of the movement that was generated, Will separated from Becca and took her by the shoulders: -"Come on, let's sit". They walked embraced, everyone moving to let them pass. She knew all of the detectives who were present, each one of them tried to make her feel their suport: Atwater squeezed her shoulder, Vanessa gave her a warm smile, Adam gave her a hug and Hailey sat right next to her holding her hand.
Not wanting to leave the hospital, Intelligence detectives had to withdraw due to a case assigned by Superintendent Crawford, something Hank couldn't avoid. Detective Upton was the only one that refused to leave, and no one contradicted her.
A couple of hours passed, but it felt like an eternity for Becca. There were still no news about Jay and that made her agony grow.
-"Why is it taking so long?" She was walking from one side to another, anxiety starting to increase.
-"These procedures are very delicate, they take a lot of time. You know what? You should go home". Will suggest. -"I don't think it is a good idea for you to stay here so much time. I'll find someone who can take you. You need rest, to change clothes, you haven't even eat anything".
-"I'm not going anywhere, Will". Becca answered with a stern tone that reminded of Jay's way of talking in distress. They were so alike.
-"Dr. Halstead". Maggie interrupted. -"I'm so sorry, you are requiered in the ER".
Will stared at his little sister, not knowing what to do, he would never leave her by herself in a normal day, much less under the circumstances they were going through.
-"Come on. I can't leave you here alone. Take your backpack, you can stay in the Doctor's room or in a dormitory while I find someone who can take you...".
-"I am not going anywhere, Will". Becca repeated her own words, this time with a little bit of anger.
-"Bec, I get it, I totally do. You want to stay here for Jay, but we will be updated in the ER, I just can't leave you here alone".
-"Alone? This must be the safest place in the hospital right now". She said pointing to all of the cops around.
-"I am not going anywhere". Upton interrupted before Will could continue. -"I can take care of her".
-"Hailey, you don't have to, you are already going through a lot right now and you are on duty, so...".
-"Nobody will move me from here, Will. It's ok, for real".
-"Is that all right for you?". Will looked at Becca and noticed the tiredness and sadness in her eyes as she nodded. -"Ok, all right. Just promise me that you'll eat something, kiddo". He approached to his little sister and kissed her forehead before parting.
-"Not really hungry, but I'll try".
-"Please do it for me. I'll be back as soon as I can".
His heart dropped when he walked out of the room, she also felt a little bit helpless, alone. It was true that she knew Hailey since a few years ago, she liked her and trusted her, but she wasn't her family and that's what she needed at the moment.
-"What if I bring you a hamburger from the cafeteria?" Maggie smiled to Becca. -"Don't you dare to say 'no' to me. I know it's your favorite, I'll be right back".
Becca took a deep breath and sighed, her leg was shaking a lot even standing up. Despair and anxiety were taking over her small body, she felt the urge to hit something or somebody. Her mind started going around, she couldn't live without Jay, what would she do without her big brother? She was nothing without him. A lot of memories came to her mind, good ones and bad ones. Suddenly she was crying without even noticing it.
-"Hey!" Hailey called her from her seat and forced a smile for the girl. -"Wanna join me here?".
Becca sat next to her brother's partner, not really knowing what to do or what to say. She tried to hold her tears, but failed, so she wiped them away as soon as they got out of her eyes. Hailey placed a hand in Becca's shaking leg.
-"You don't need to do that. You can cry in front of me, I won't judge you. I mean, look at me". They both smiled. -"Here, hold my hand, squeeze it. Breath with me, it will help you ease your toughts: 4 in, hold 7 and 8 out".
-"Thank you". The little Halstead sister said when she was more calmed.
-"I know you and Jay are very close. He's so private, but he still talks a lot about you with me".
-"He does?".
-"Yes. When we started working together, before knowing he had a sister, I always tought he was talking about his daughter".
-"Imagine that". Becca made a disgust gesture and laughed a bit. -"I know you two are very fond too. He never talks about work with me, but you wouldn't be here if you didn't care for him". She didn't feel like revealing right there that Jay had talked about her before.
-"He is a good partner, it's hard to find one". The girl stared at her for a few seconds, then they stayed in silence for a couple of minutes, staring at the floor. Becca was a sensible girl, she understood there was more behind Detective Upton words and suddenly Hailey felt like family.
-"I'm really scared". She confessed while unconsciously hugging Hailey's arm.
-"Me too". The detective held her tight. -"But your brother, he is a tough guy, he's strong of mind and body. And he loves you so much, he won't stop fighting to overcome this and come back to you. I can assure you that".
A very special connection was formed between Hailey and Becca in that exact moment. In Hailey's arms, Becca found the peace she needed to rest, and fell asleep while she stroked her ginger tousled hair. Inside her chest, Hailey was feeling the urgent need to protect the little girl, as if she was her own sister. She never let her go while they waited together, if anything, she held her tighter as time passed by.
Rojas found them like that when she went back to the hospital to check on Hailey.
-"Hey". Vanessa announced her presence.
-"Hey". Upton answered back in a low voice, trying to hug her roomate, but couldn't really move with Becca asleep in her shoulder.
-"I got you some gyro from Greek Islands, I tought you might be hungry".
-"That's really sweet of you. Thanks". She took the back with her unoccupied hand.
-"And I got you some clean clothes from the appartment".
-"Thank you". She genuinely smiled.
-"Have we heard anything about Jay?" She sat down next to her friend.
-"No". Upton sadly answered, unconsciously checking on Becca, who was now half awake. -"He's gonna freak out when he wakes up, the man hates needles. I can't figure him out, he's the first one through the door, a war vet. And he'd rather take a bullet than get the flu shot".
Becca, who was now listening everything, internally laughed at that last comment. That was a good description of his brother.
-"Hailey, I know how hard this must be for you".
-"It's always hard when something like this happens".
-"It's hard because you love him". Vanessa Rojas said simply.
Becca's heart began to beat a little bit faster, this time for a good feeling instead of anxiety. Of course she was in love with her brother, everything made sense now. And she knew Jay had feelings for her too. Maybe that was why she felt so secure by her side.
-"Of course I love him. He's my partner". Hailey answered to finish the conversation.
Both detectives phones started to buzz and Becca took advantage of that to pretend that she had just woken up.
-"Ruzek got a lead on the home invasion". Rojas looked at her phone.
-"Yeah. Um, I'm gonna stay". Hailey said looking at Becca, who looked devastated even after having rested a bit.
-"Is everything all right?" The younger Halstead asked when Rojas left. Hailey nodded her head, not being able to controll her sobbing. The last conversation had moved a lot inside of her and was now a mixure of feelings.
Another hour passed by and Becca couldn't take it anymore.
-"Where's Will? He was supposed to be back soon and also keep us updated.
-"He was here a few times, but you were deep asleep. He didn't want to bother you. He had no news, though".
-"I heard my favorite Halstead didn't want to leave her brother's side". A familiar voice called, it was Trudy Platt. She approached with a bag in her hands. -"So I thought it would help to bring you some clothes, hunny. I mean, CPD sweaters and pants might not be the best, but they should be more confortable than that uniform you've been wearing all day. These are the smallest I found, I'm positive they'll fit you".
When Becca came back from the restroom, all changed and carrying the other clothes, she found Hailey and Platt standing up in front of Will. Fear ran through her entire body once more, not knowing what to expect, since the three of them looked very serius. It was Hailey who spotted the little girl petrified in terror at the entrance of the room.
-"Bec". Will called her. -"He's all right. Jay is going to be fine".
-"Are you sure?" She dropped her clothes and started to cry happy tears.
-"It will take time for him to recover and I can assure you he will be a pain in the ass, but he's going to be all right".
Becca laughed and jumped into her brother's arms, who lifted her up a bit in the air. Upton and Platt presenced the scene with teary eyes of relief and a smile from ear to ear.
-"Can I see him?"
-"He's still asleep, but of course. You can wait by his side until he wakes up. Come on, I'll take you there. My shift will end in a couple of hours and then I'll fully be with you two".
-"Oh, but wait!" She turned to Hailey, before following her brother. -"You should come with us. Will, she can come with us, right?".
-"I don't think is a good idea. I'll wait in here until he wakes up, don't worry". She rushed to say before letting Will answer.
-"No. I really think you should come". Once more, there was that tone so similar to Jay comming from Becca.
-"There's no problem, Hailey. If you want to, you can come". The doctor confirmed.
When Jay woke up, Hailey was out changing her clothes. Becca was the first person he spotted when he opened his eyes.
-"Hey". He managed to say and raised his unharmed arm trying to reach his little sister, taking her elbow. -"Why are you crying?" She took his hand and squeezed it as tight as she could.
-"Because I'm happy you're alive, dummy". Jay smiled when he heard her voice.
Both siblings had a lot of things to say, but they didn't need words to express their feelings. They stared at each others eyes and it was enough to understand what they were going through.
-"I know". Jay said feeling how emotional Becca was. -"Come here". He opened his arm within his posibilities and with a lot of caution she laid down her head to hug him back. -"I'm sorry. I'm so, so, sorry". He kept repeating in a raspy voice.
They stayed like that for a while. Jay couldn't stop thinking about his actions and what would had happened to Becca if he had died. She was the only thing on his toughts when he received the shot. Becca relaxed when she heard her brother's heartbeat, it was the definitive evidence she needed to make sure he was really alive.
-"How are you feling?"
-"Like I was asleep for a year".
-"You needed a little rest".
-"Sorry to interrupt". Detective Upton came into the scene, embarrased to be the reason they had to separate. -"I didn't noticed you were already awake".
-"Don't worry. You are just in time". Becca smiled.
-"Hailey?" Jay started and she walked to the other side of the bed.
-"You know I hate hospitals".
-"Oh, you are just fine already, aren't you?". Becca rolled her teary eyes, but the comment made Hailey laughed a bit.
-"I do".
-"You gotta get me out of here".
-"It's not optional, no".
Hank Voight entered almost immediately and stood next to his detectives.
-"Becca, happy to see your eyes lighting again". He greeted her first with a head nodd, then talked to Jay: -"How's the shoulder?"
-"It feels like I'll be flying a little crooked for a while.
-"I went and talked to Will and he said no structural damage, so you got lucky".
-"I guess you could call it that".
There was something going around Jay's mind, but he couldn't ask with the presence of his little sister. He didn't want her to leave, but he had to ask Voight, and there wasn't going to be another chance.
-"Uh, Bec--why don't you go and..."
-"I guess I'll go find Will, yes". Becca said feeling the tension.
-"How's Angela doing?" He finally asked when they were alone.
-"She's under arrest".
From outside the room, Becca saw Hailey and Voight going out having a brief conversation, they looked concerned. When they split up, the Sergeant walked into another room and Upton rushed out of the hospital.
-"Is your shift already over?" Becca asked Will when he passed by, not even noticing her.
-"Half an hour and I'm done". He said looking at his clock. -"Look at you, all smiley again".
-"Jay woke up. They are running some tests right now. He's going to loose it if there are needles involved".
-"He just received a shot and I do believe he would still be afraid of a needle". The siblings laughed.
The three Halsteads stayed together as much as they could, but it was getting late and they were tired. Becca's eyes started to close due to mental exhaustation, she had cried all day and her mind was pushed to the limit. Now that everything was calmed coudn't avoid to fall asleep although the chair she was sitting in was the most unconfortable.
-"I think it's time to go". Will said. -"She stayed by your side all day, didn't want to move for a second. She was really, really worry".
-"Maybe I wasn't the indicated to be in charge of her". Jay sighed and spat what he had in his mind. -"Maybe we should have let aun Clair take her".
-"And just let her go to New York far away from us? Like, never see her again? What are you talking about, Jay? Where is this comming from, anyway?"
-"It's not the first time I've put her in a situation like this".
-"Stop thinking about it. It's the sedatives, you are all sensible and tired and need more rest. We are good, Jay. There is no one with whom she is better than with you, not even me".
A few days passed before Jay was discharged. Becca noticed how a lot of people visited him more than once: Kim, Adam, Kevin, Vanessa, Hank, Trudy and a bunch of other cops she didn't recognize. Her brother was a beloved soul and the love he received was extended towards her. She stayed inside of the room with all of the visits, except with Hailey. She always found an excuse to go out of the room when Detective Upton arrived.
-"All right. Finally, time to go home". Will said carrying a bag. -"Got you clean clothes and other stuff you may need".
-"Thank you".
-"Are you sure you don't need a hand?" Dr. Halstead asked before going out.
-"I'm good. I'll be using only one hand for a couple of days, so I might get used to it from now on".
-"I'll be around if you change your mind. Bec, let's go. Give the man some space".
Becca already knew all of the hospital, specially the ER, so she was left alone on the hallway while Will went back to work. She went to the vending machine to get something to eat while waiting for Jay. She got a juice for herself and was about to take a bag of gummies for her brother when a voice interrupted her.
-"Isn't a little bit early for candies?" It was Dr. Charles.
-"Oh, no. These are for my brother. He is about to be discharged, I tought about getting him his favorites".
-"That's a nice gesture and I'm happy to hear he's going out.
These past days were very hectic, weren't they?".
-"You bet".
Becca started walking slowly back to Jay's room, the psychiatrist by her side.
-"Dr. Charles?"
-"Yes, tell me".
-"Did Will send you to spy on me?"
-"What makes you think that?"
-"I know you've been following me around the hospital for the last couple of days. If I go to the restroom, you are there. If I go to the cafeteria, you are there. Whenever I'm alone, you are there...and now we're here". Becca smiled.
-"Oh. It wasn't my intention to make you feel harassed. Your brother Will wants to make sure you are fine, that's all".
-"No, it's ok. I think I understand".
-"Good. Well, now that we're here, would you mind if I ask you how are you doing? Your mind and body were under a lot of stress for a long period of time".
-"I'm fine. I mean, Jay is alive, that's all that matters".
-"Hm. You are right. Anyway, I'll be around if you feel the need to talk. Even when you go back home, you know I will be here".
-"Thanks, Dr. Charles".
That last conversation was strange for the little girl, why would she need to talk to Dr. Charles? Jay was alive, everything was fine. She couldn't stop going around it in her mind, she tought about telling Jay about it, but when she was close to his room she detected someone else inside, it was Hailey. Becca stood watching from afar how the detective was helping her brother to put on his sweater, that made her smile. She didn't know what they were talking about, but from her place it seemed they were very close from each other. Becca turned and walked away to give them some space.
Thanks for reading. If you liked it, it would help my soul if you give it a like, comment or share. 😌♡

I’ll show you mine - part 8
Tumblr media
Summary - He didn’t fit. His clothes were too nice, his hair too neat, he was raising all the red flags for Hailey. She didn’t think he was part of the crew she was trying to take down, but why else would he be in such an establishment on a random Tuesday night? But then he muttered the words into her ear that she had least expected - ‘I’m police’.
Chapters - 8/?
Notes - thanks for the love on this story! The next update will be October 17th ❤️ AO3 Link
‘So how’s things upstairs?’ Trudy asked with a warm smile, her hands wrapped tightly around the steaming mug of coffee in front of her, the blueberry muffin sitting on the plate next to it remaining untouched at that moment.
‘It’s good,’ Hailey said, picking a piece off her own muffin and popping it into her mouth before continuing. ‘Voight’s got his own way of running things but the team works seamlessly together and it’s nice to finally feel a part of something bigger.’
Trudy nodded whilst she sipped on her coffee. ‘He appreciates his team, won’t let anyone say a bad word about them or treat them without the respect they deserve. You’ve landed on your feet up there Upton.’
From anyone else, the words could be tinged with a sense of judgement, that maybe it wasn’t a deserved promotion, but Hailey knew differently. Platt had a tough exterior sometimes but Hailey knew that she was proud of her and she was grateful after all this time to finally have ended up in the same district as the formidable desk sergeant. She wasn’t under her direct supervision but had heard from Kim that if patrol was needed to assist on a case then they got to work alongside Platt. Hailey clearly wasn’t the only cop who Trudy had had an influence over judging from Kim’s tone when she spoke about her.
‘Don’t I know it Sarge,’ Hailey smiled. ‘I think the guys are learning a lot too,’ she added, thinking of how she had never seen Adam work as hard or as intently as he did when Olinsky was peering over his shoulder. She had also heard directly from Jay just how impressed he was with Kevin - Hailey had made sure to tell the young cop directly, it was always nice to hear when someone had something positive to say about you.
‘Al says that Ruzek is a bit of a handful,’ Trudy cocked an eyebrow and Hailey chuckled with a little nod.
‘Yep, he’s definitely due a little polishing but Al seems to have the measure of him and isn’t letting him get away with crap, not that I did either,’ she tacked on quickly, not wanting it to seem like she had let any of Adam’s indiscretions slip through. But training two new members of the team without any support from the higher ups had been difficult on her own and she hadn’t been in the position to give either of her officers as much time as she would have liked.
‘Al also said that Ruzek had clearly had some very good habits drilled into him and he said he was impressed by the level he was already at,’ Trudy said with a hint of a proud smile.
Hailey’s shoulders deflated after the momentary need to defend herself and her actions, she should have known neither Trudy or Al would put in a dig like that - they weren’t like that.
‘That’s nice of him to say,’ Hailey said, concealing a grin behind her mug as she took a long gulp.
‘There’s not many detectives who would have put their own chances at a new assignment on the line for the sake of officers lower down the pecking order Upton. You did a good thing for those two,’ Trudy said and Hailey felt a surge of pride through her chest.
‘I had a good role model,’ she said, not needing to say anymore when Trudy’s cheeks reddened slightly when she realised Hailey had been talking about her.
‘But you’re getting on with everyone up there? Burgess can be a bit of a chatterbox but she’s got a good heart.’
‘Kim’s great,’ Hailey said, tugging on some of the memories of riding alongside the young officer over the past couple of weeks. ‘It’s nice to be able to impart some of my wisdom for want of a better word, onto another female cop. It’s not easy for us but that doesn’t mean we still can’t do a good job.’
‘Exactly,’ Trudy said, finally taking a bite of her muffin in between sentences. ‘And you and Halstead?’
Hailey almost choked on her coffee, the blood rushing to her cheeks and her palms suddenly sweaty as if she had just run a marathon. ‘What?’ She said, eyes wide.
‘Well he’s the other detective up there we hadn’t mentioned,’ Trudy said calmly but Hailey could spot a glimmer in her eyes and the slight tilt to her head. ‘And he’s close to your age so figured you’d have a lot in common.’
‘Oh, well-’ Hailey stammered. ‘Yeah, he’s a great cop. Ummm…’ she was struggling to find the words but not discussing Jay would make it even more obvious that they had something to hide rather than talking about him normally as a colleague. ‘We worked well together on the Harrison case and I know he’s a great guy for Atwater to learn from too.’ That was all true, and Hailey hoped it had been enough to convince the desk sergeant to move onto another topic of conversation. But no such luck.
‘And he’s not bad to look at either,’ Trudy said nonchalantly, looking at Hailey over the rim of her mug, eyes sparkling with knowing.
‘Well I guess not,’ Hailey said, flustered. She wsan’t wrong and denying Jay was good looking was a foolish endeavour. The man could stop traffic.
‘I heard he’s single,’ Trudy added flippantly.
‘I wouldn't know,’ Hailey said calmly. ‘But I’m focused on the job right now. Adding a man to the mix would only complicate matters.’
‘Men do that,’ Trudy said. ‘But sometimes complexity is worth it.’
And with that, she downed the last of her coffee, took a final bite out of her muffin and stood up. ‘Thanks for the coffee Upton,’ she said before heading towards the exit leaving a bewildered Hailey in her wake. Was Platt trying to play matchmaker or was she just letting Hailey know that she had seen through her and Jay’s little facade? The woman was harder to read than Ulysses.
——————————————————————————
They had been sitting in the car for over 3 hours and there hadn’t been an inch of movement within the house. It had been a long shot this stakeout, they only had it third hand that this was the location that the brother of their suspect was squatting in. It had been Kevin’s idea that he might contact his brother, they had been caught together on multiple occasions previously so it had been a good idea initially. But 3 hours later, Hailey’s arse had gone numb, she could go a coffee and was desperate for something to eat.
Kim had kindly shared the bag of cashew nuts she had been nibbling on but what Hailey really fancied was chocolate. She made a mental note to pick some up on the way to Jay’s later. They hadn’t spent every night together for the past few weeks, but Hailey could count on one hand the number of times they had slept apart. They alternated most of the time, although Hailey’s apartment was a little further out from the district so less chance they would be caught together, so they frequented it slightly more often.
They had planned to order takeout that evening and there wasn’t much more of a plan than that but Hailey imagined their clothes wouldn’t stay on for very long. She couldn’t help it, if she spent longer than 10 minutes in the same room as Jay, she was longing to feel his skin against hers. She was insatiable, like a teenager who’d been hit by the hormone train and discovered the wonders of the opposite sex.
‘So how frowned upon is it to date another cop?’ Kim asked abruptly, pulling Hailey out of her Jay filled daydreams.
‘I mean technically it’s allowed,’ Hailey said, treading carefully as she wasn’t sure where Kim’s question had appeared from. ‘There’s issues involved if there’s a difference in ranks or it affects your ability to handle yourself on a case.’ Hailey glanced over at her partner and noticed that Kim was chewing on her bottom lip nervously. ‘What makes you ask?’
‘Well, I think Adam likes me,’ Kim admitted, blushing slightly but Hailey could see the bashful smile peeping through. ‘And I just didn’t know whether to do anything about it.’
‘Do you like him back?’ Hailey asked, suddenly feeling like she had been thrown back into middle school. It was adorable though, she had clocked Adam’s crush on Kim from the moment they had started working together.
‘Yeah,’ Kim said, looking over at Hailey with a smile before turning her attention back to the house they were watching.
‘Then if you want to go for it, go for it,’ Hailey said. ‘But just remember, you’ll have it harder than he will,’ she added honestly.
‘Man’s world,’ Kim huffed and Hailey nodded in agreement.
‘Unfortunately, we get branded differently for doing the exact same thing. But if you think he’s worth it, then sometimes you have to deal with the repercussions,’ Hailey said, but a small part of her wondered if she was talking about Kim’s situation, or her own.
‘Voight’s not a fan of in-house relationships,’ Kim said, her previously happy demeanour vanishing and her shoulders sagging.
‘From what I’ve heard, he’s not a fan of relationships that impact the team or the work we do. If you can prove that yours and Adam’s relationship isn’t detrimental to the unit, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on if he wants to argue about it.’ Now Hailey was certain she wasn’t just talking about Kim.
‘I guess you’re right,’ Kim said. ‘I think he is worth it, he’s so sweet.’ Kim continued to ramble on about Adam and all of his positive attributes for the final 30 minutes of their stake out. It was cute to hear really, Kim was clearly infatuated by the young officer Hailey had brought over from Narcotics. And from what Hailey had seen, Adam felt the same. She would need to have a word with him though. For only having known Kim a short while, she felt unusually protective and she wouldn’t have Adam messing her around. Somehow she didn’t think he would though, kid was like a giant teddy bear.
—————————————————————————
‘How was your day?’ Jay asked when she finally appeared at his apartment that evening, a bag full of chocolate bars from the store on the corner tightly clutched in her hand. They had barely seen each other all day, when she and Kim had returned from their stakeout, he had taken Kevin down to the gym at the academy to teach him some hand to hand combat. He had thought Kevin could benefit from it and Atwater had jumped at the chance for some one on one instruction, especially from a decorated detective like Jay.
‘It was good,’ Hailey said as she kicked off her shoes and dropped down onto the couch with a soft thud. ‘Kim and I had a good chat in the car, turns out she’s got a crush on Adam.’
‘Oh really,’ Jay said, intrigued.
‘Yep, asked me about dating another cop. I couldn’t exactly stand on my soapbox mind you, when you and I almost got caught feeling each other up in the break room,’ she chuckled as she accepted the beer that Jay passed her. Clearly he had been waiting to open them until she got home, she appreciated the small gesture.
‘Well, you looked so good in your jeans. I couldn’t resist,’ he said with a smirk.
‘I wear my jeans everyday Jay,’ Hailey shook her head, still grinning.
‘And I can’t resist everyday,’ Jay said, reaching over to tug her legs into his lap so she was facing him on the couch. She smiled as he ran his hands up and down her calves slowly, his eyes sparkling with desire.
‘But seriously Jay,’ Hailey said, tilting her head slightly to indicate the change in tone in conversation. ‘She said Voight hates in-house relationships. How much shit are we going to be in when he finds out?’
Jay sighed, pulling her legs just a little closer to him. ‘Not enough for him to do anything apart from grumble about it and maybe throw his toys out the stroller.’
‘Really?’ Hailey asked, Jay knew Voight better than she did after all.
‘Really,’ Jay said seriously. ‘Just got to show him how our relationship doesn’t have an impact on our ability to do out job and how valuable you are to the team.’ Jay winked and Hailey felt a small amount of the dread that had been sitting on her chest since her talk with Kim lift slightly.
‘How valuable I am, what about you?’
‘I can hold my own against Hank, I’m not worried,’ Jay squeezed her leg. ‘And we still have one ace up our sleeve.’
‘And what’s that?’ Hailey asked curiosuly.
‘It’s a pre-existing relationship Hailey,’ Jay said, with added dramatic flair and Hailey had to laugh. Somehow even when she started to spiral, Jay knew exactly what to say to bring her out of it.
‘For all of 24 hours,’ she poked him in the side but the smile didn’t shift from her cheeks.
‘And what a wonderful 24 hours they were, do you need me to remind you?’ His eyes darkened and Hailey clenched her legs together subconsciously.
‘I could do with a refresher I guess,’ she flirted back, sliding herself into his lap, threading her hands through his hair and pulling his mouth to hers in a fierce kiss.
